Mama-Bhagne Hills — Amazingly balancing rocks of Dubrajpur

Tourism-Mama-Bhagney

If life is all about balancing on a tight-rope, then Mama Bhagne Hills of Dubrajpur is nature’s answer to that teaching. Two rocks uncannily balanced over each other, this spectacular rock formation of the Chotonagpur Plateau extension is in Birbhum’s Dubrajpur, regarded as a tourist spot for the very existence of this rock formation that many come to watch.

1588849136-Tourism-Mama-Bhagney-1

It is a pair of almost spherical natural boulders of granite rock, one balancing on the top of the other. The balancing of the rocks is so surprising and have a bond that it is known as Mama-Bhagne (the uncle and the nephew). The site has a number of boulders splintered across, made of grey granite, pink quartz, grey feldspar and black mica. At the base of these hills stands the famous Shiva temple of ‘Pahareswar.’

1588849205-Tourism-Mama-Bhagney-3

The whole area will give you a mysterious feeling with vast stretches of agricultural fields and suddenly in the middle of nowhere rocks of various sizes and shapes pop up. Though most of them have a roundish shape but they are a nature’s script. Legends say when Lord Ram decided to attack Ravana, he found it necessary to throw a bridge across the straits for the conveyance of his troops, he drove in his aerial chariot to the Himalayas, picked up what stones he needed and drove back. As he was passing over Dubrajpur, his horses suddenly jumped and the chariot got tilted. Some stones fell off and they gave rise to the Mama-Bhagne Hills of Dubrajpur.

1588849278-Tourism-Mama-Bhagney-5

Locals also mention that Viswakarma, at the command of Shiva, was asked to erect a second Kashi in one night. When he collected the rocks and was about to commence work, day dawned and so he left and the rocks he collected were also left behind. Folklores apart, geologists believe there might have been a volcanic eruption that led to the formation of Chotonagpur Plateau and that might have led to the formation of these rocks. The surroundings are worth a mention, with green fields, sparse population, shepherds with their herds roaming at the bottom of the Hills. It is also a favourite tourist spot and many from Santiniketan often drop in for a day tour.

How to reach: Dubrajpur is around 23 km from Siuri in Birbhum. A few hours road travel from Kolkata or a train to Siuri or Santiniketan and then proceed to Dubrajpur on a day trip.

Places to see around: Santiniketan, Siuri, Labhpur and many other important tourist spots of Birbhum

Local elections: How key places are predicted to vote on Thursday - and what it could mean for general election

Almost 9,000 people were asked their for their views ahead of Thursday's local elections - and this can give an insight into how the parties are fairing ahead of the general election.

More than 2,600 seats are up for election in 107 English councils on Thursday.

Now, YouGov has made its final calls for some key contests using the MRP polling method after interviewing almost 9,000 people over two weeks.

Here, exclusively on Sky News, are the headlines. We'll start with two key battlegrounds:

Labour HQ will be very happy that YouGov says they will go red.

Hyndburn is a red wall council that has proved sticky in recent council elections. Milton Keynes is also a great political bellwether - Labour needs to be doing well here in the general election.

Then there are races that are more of a toss-up - councils that might change hands but YouGov says the races are too close to make a firm prediction.

Norwich and Tamworth are two places where Labour looks like they're building momentum in both councils, but it's too close to call.

Winning Norwich would be pretty seismic for Labour, given it only has one target seat, Norwich North. To be doing well in a general election, Labour only needs not to be going backwards.

Reigate is an exceptional council - local difficulties and defections in recent years make it easier to win back.

YouGov says there will also be parties possibly losing control of councils.

Lib Dem control of Hull in Yorkshire and Tory control of Walsall in the West Midlands are both on the edge - and both are big contests.

Keep up with all the latest news from the UK and around the world by following Sky News

Hull in Yorkshire is where Labour is snapping at the Lib Dem's heels. Lib Dems tell me they are worried but they've always just about held on in the past - it's quite a rare head-to-head between these two.

Walsall really matters, not only because there's a key general election seat here. But also because it's where we will all be watching to see how much Reform UK - which is fielding candidates in 15 of the 20 wards - eats into the Tory vote and what impact that has.

Now, Thursday is not just about councils maybe changing hands. We want to know where voting patterns are changing significantly and who's got momentum - and who hasn't.

The big story of the night will be measuring Labour advances - and here's where YouGov says that's happening.

So that's Labour momentum in the South - Milton Keynes and Thurrock; the East - Peterborough; the Midlands - Walsall - and the North.

North East Lincolnshire covers Grimsby and Cleethorpes where Sky has its target towns project, so you're seeing lots of coverage of that race. Labour will be pleased with this - showing they're competitive in the places they need.

And you can also see where Labour is also advancing - but YouGov says that advance is less strong.

Again, this list has areas from all around the country.

Top is Hyndburn - which you saw earlier may as a council fall Labour hands, but it's doing so with more modest Labour momentum.

It's a place - and places like it - that matter so much that Labour might want to be doing a bit better.

By contrast, Rugby and Tamworth are lower down the list Labour needs to worry about when they're considering the general election. If Tories are losing there - it's total wipe out.

Finally, here's where YouGov projects Labour is not advancing - or where the Tories are doing okay.

Read more: What elections are taking place on 2 May and who can I vote for? Are the Conservatives missing Boris Johnson?

The big picture in several of these is there are more parties than Labour who benefit when the Tory vote declines, including the Lib Dems.

But little change in Colchester is a small warning bell for Labour - at the general election here they need to overturn a majority of 10,000. If this happens on the night, they'll be asking why. And Reigate, which as we said before saw defections, is predicted to have some Tory gains.

Much of the local elections will be dominated by the mayoral contests - the biggest names standing.

But big personalities can mean politics in these races looking very different to the rest of the country.

What happens in the council elections will be poured over in far more detail, particularly by Labour, desperate to write a story that ends up with them winning at the general election.

5 favorite places

Eugene Levy’s Toronto

The Canadian comedian, known for “American Pie,” “Schitt’s Creek” and now, “The Reluctant Traveler,” isn’t at all reluctant to share what he loves about his hometown.

As you might guess from the title of Eugene Levy’s latest series — “The Reluctant Traveler” — he’s a guy who’s happy to stay put.

The show, now in its second season on Apple TV+ , follows Mr. Levy, a 77-year-old comedy legend known for his roles in “Waiting for Guffman,” “American Pie,” “Schitt’s Creek” and more, as he defies his anxieties about airports, heights, temperatures, textures and vast swaths of the animal kingdom. With great consternation, he leaves his comfort zone — Canada, as he often reminds viewers — to shadow an expert moose caller in Sweden, herd 600 sheep through a German resort town and politely avoid an octopus aboard a Greek trawler.

Eugene Levy leans against a wall with his right hand holding the knot of a navy blue tie. He is wearing a dark blue shirt and a rust-colored blazer. He has dark-framed round glasses and dark hair combed back with some gray mixed in. He has one of his distinctive thick eyebrows raised and is smiling with closed lips.

Raised in Hamilton, Ontario, about 40 miles southwest of Toronto, Mr. Levy got his big break in 1972 alongside Martin Short, Gilda Radner, Victor Garber, Andrea Martin and Paul Shaffer in a celebrated production of “Godspell” at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theater . He has since called the city — and one historic, leafy neighborhood — home.

“Rosedale is a residential area that is right in the heart of Toronto,” he told me over coffee at Tavern on the Green, in New York, where he’d joined the cast of the fourth season of “ Only Murders in the Building .” With new skyscrapers going up “a mile a minute” in Toronto, he said, the scene from our table in Central Park looked a little like his view from Rosedale. He and his wife, Deborah Divine, are neighborhood loyalists — Avant Goût , a local bistro, has been their go-to for decades — but spots in other areas rank high, too.

Here are five of Mr. Levy’s favorite places in Toronto.

1. Terroni Bar Centrale

“Deb and I would usually do our daily constitutional in the morning and end up at Bar Centrale for a latte and some of their fine pastries,” he said, adding that the croissants are especially good at this spot in Summerhill, a neighborhood that borders Rosedale. Occupying the ground floor of the multistory Terroni Price restaurant in a 19th-century brick building, Bar Centrale forgoes the Wi-Fi you might expect with your coffee in favor of a wall’s worth of international magazines and — according to Mr. Levy — a staff full of good conversationalists.

2. Harry Rosen

The flagship of this family-run men’s wear emporium on Bloor Street is one-stop shopping for Mr. Levy. “I hate traveling around to different places to get different things,” he said, very much on brand. This place “has every designer, if that’s what you’re into, and everything from socks to tuxedos.” There’s also a sumptuous grooming department, a tailoring service and an array of coffee table books on topics like racecars, rockers and tattoo art.

3. CN Tower

Touristy? Sure, Mr. Levy acknowledged. Still, this approximately 1,815-foot communications and observation tower offers unrivaled views of the city and Lake Ontario, even if — like him — you avoid the acrophobia-inducing glass-floored sections. “We used to take the kids there when they were young,” he said. “I couldn’t even put my toe on the edge of the glass, but my kids would just destroy me — they would lie down on it.” A less stressful view: Rogers Centre , the stadium next door, where you can see the Toronto Blue Jays play baseball. “I’ve been a Jays fan for, I guess since they started in ’77,” Mr. Levy told me. He clarified his brand of fandom during a Season 2 episode of “The Reluctant Traveler”: “I don’t go and paint my face,” he told the Spanish footballer Héctor Bellerín , but “in a championship game, I’ll stand up and give them, you know, a thumbs-up.”

4. The Royal Conservatory of Music

“The musicianship coming out of the Royal Conservatory is just awesome,” said Mr. Levy, quick to note that his wife “would go there when she was a kid taking piano lessons.” (Students at the 138-year-old institution have included the pianist Glenn Gould and the singer Sarah McLachlan .) Mr. Levy loves concerts at the attached Koerner Hall — “the acoustics are impeccable” — where you can see top students or international stars .

5. Windsor Arms Hotel

The 1972 “Godspell” role became Mr. Levy’s first steady acting paycheck: “That was huge,” he said. And with his windfall (“140 bucks every single week”) he started enjoying meals and late-night cocktails, or cake and coffee, at the Windsor Arms , a 10-minute drive from the theater. The hotel was popular, he said, because it was “quiet and more residential” than others. (The suites feel like genteel prewar apartments, with musical instruments and plenty of plush seating.) One of Mr. Levy’s favorite old haunts there — the Courtyard Cafe — is now the Courtyard, an event space worth a quick wander to see where, among other things, Elton John and David Furnish held an engagement party. Mr. Levy, now a connoisseur of 5:30 p.m. dinners, is no longer the late-night cake-and-coffee guy he once was — but he still gives the place, you know, a thumbs-up.
