FCA Policies

As a volunteer with FCA, it is important to understand our Statement of Faith, policies and guidelines regarding behavior. We ask that all participants who go on a FCA International Trip complete a Ministry Leader Application , or MLA. If you already have completed an MLA, then please notify your team leader.

e trip fca

FCA is an interdenominational organization. We recognize that there are differing views among denominations. You will meet people who do not believe as you do on all points of doctrine. Remember that the Kingdom of God is unique in that we, as God’s people from around the world, can maintain unity in the midst of diversity.  However, unity is not easily maintained and unless we are committed to a few basic principles, these differences can cause tension and disunity on our team.

To maintain unity, let us agree to disagree on issues which are not essential to salvation and continue to love and accept one another (Romans 14). We realize people will not agree on issues such as baptism, the work of the Holy Spirit, eschatology, etc., but we can unite around the absolute essentials of the faith concerning the person and work of Jesus Christ, the authority of Scripture and salvation by grace through faith.

Read FCA’s Statement of Faith »

As you serve in a different country, you will be exposed to a different culture and may encounter other believers whose practice of public prayer and worship differ from what you consider familiar or normal. The strong imposition of one person’s view of a particular issue upon another is unsuitable. Let us respect those who differ from us. FCA and our partnering organizations choose to work with churches, organizations and individuals that hold the Bible as God’s authoritative Word and who see it as the basis of faith and living. Being both an international and interdenominational organization, FCA emphasizes the necessity of “agreeing to disagree” on secondary theological issues in order to work together for the transformation of the lives of coaches and athletes.

You will be representing Jesus Christ, FCA and our partnering organizations/individuals on this trip.  Your service on this trip supports ongoing ministry and partnership efforts in your destination country. Your actions and words can impact future teams and future ministry opportunities.

If at any point before, during or after your trip you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your Trip Leader.

Failure to comply with FCA’s Guidelines (outlined in this section and in the MLA) may result in being asked to return home at your own expense.

THE FCA VALUES:

  • Integrity - We will demonstrate Christ-like wholeness, privately and publicly. (Proverbs 11:3)
  • Serving - We will model Jesus’ example of serving. (John 13:1-17)
  • Teamwork - We will express our unity in Christ in all our relationships. (Philippians 2:1-4)
  • Excellence - We will honor and glorify God in all we do. (Colossians 3:23-24)

e trip fca

At some point on your trip you will encounter a situation that is completely foreign and awkward (food, language, local traditions, behavior, hygiene practices). Your reaction to the foreign and awkward will either allow you to gain a greater appreciation for the diversity of this world or cause conflict and discomfort while limiting your ability to listen to God during your trip. Just because it’s different doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Your comfort zone might be challenged but with a humble heart and desire to learn, God will be able to show and teach you some incredible things while on your trip.

Be aware and sensitive to what the locals are doing and follow their lead.  Do they remove their shoes before entering buildings? How do they greet each other? Do they sit on the floor? Eat with their hands? Be careful what you ask of your hosts – many cultures will go out of their way to make sure you, as their guests, are comfortable; even if it means scrambling behind the scenes to fulfill a spoken request. If you are eating dinner and there are no forks, napkins or similar “familiar” item, avoid asking for one as it may not be something they use in their culture. Your in-country hosts will be excited to share their culture with you. Feel free to ask them questions with respect and a desire to learn.

Avoid nationality jokes and unnecessary generalizations which can cause hurt feelings and create disunity (i.e., Americans are always loud, Italians always wave their hands). Sensitivity, kindness, and respect will make a big difference. Be cautious if someone wants to discuss political issues. Many non-US citizens have a strong opinion about US foreign policy and sometimes political discussions can cause dissention or become a distraction.

Attitudes toward alcohol and smoking vary from culture to culture. In some countries, your salvation may be questioned if you drink. However, there are some countries (i.e., France and Germany) where believers do drink alcohol in moderation. Certain things which may be considered “sinful” in one culture may be acceptable in another.

Please be tolerant and avoid a judgmental attitude when facing issues with which you do not agree (Matt 7:1-5).

If you have never been in another country or culture before, you will find things to be different from the way they are in America. The book Foreign to Familiar by Sarah Lanier will greatly aid your understanding of different cultures.

e trip fca

The primary purposes of FCA International Trips are to serve the Lord, serve one another and reach others with the Gospel, so we ask you not to initiate or pursue a relationship of a romantic nature for the duration of the trip. After the trip is over you may pursue a relationship as you please, but for this short period of time we want you to be able to give yourself wholeheartedly to serving, evangelism and spiritual growth.

Some situations to avoid in this regard are prolonged conversations, private prayer walks or intensive counseling sessions with the opposite sex. Please also be aware of how you behave toward other people so that your actions are not misinterpreted. For instance, a friendly hug may be misunderstood by others on the team. In the case of existing relationships, whether in or outside the team, try to be discreet and sensitive. If doubts, questions or strong feelings arise, speak with your Trip Leader, but please do not discuss your feelings with the person concerned or a fellow team member.

  • Personalities  - As we are all aware, people come in different shapes, sizes and temperaments. Some of your team members may be untidy, loud, stubborn, shy, uncooperative, etc. Be patient, tolerant, forgiving, open, honest, kind, gentle, communicative and most of all, loving. Remember we are all in the process of growing. You may be asked to work long hours in less than ideal conditions in the name of serving our Lord.
  • Have a team attitude – Humbly focus on the team at all times and submit to the team leader, even when it isn’t easy or you do not agree with a decision. Please be on time for all devotions, meetings, and outreaches.
  • Be flexible – Maintain a patient, creative and flexible spirit that can be used by God.
  • Respect the Nationals – It is easy to approach a new culture with the mindset that “we are better.” We ask that you respect, and do not degrade the national workers. Make every effort to value and lift them up. Try to learn from them when possible, regardless of circumstances.

Trump's hush money trial

Stormy Daniels testifies in Trump's hush money trial

From CNN's Kara Scannell, Lauren Del Valle and Jeremy Herb in the courthouse

Court is in session

Former President Donald Trump sits in court on Tuesday.

Judge Juan Merchan is back on the bench and the court is in session for Donald Trump’s historic criminal trial.

Prosecutors are expected to call Stormy Daniels to the stand today, a source familiar with the matter tells CNN. Its unclear if she will be called first thing this morning.

Her anticipated appearance comes a day after testimony from two witnesses from the Trump Organization’s accounting department Monday that laid out in detail the documents – including checks, invoices, and ledger entries – that prosecutors say make up the 34 charges of falsifying business records against Trump.

Prosecutors say those documents show the reimbursement to Michael Cohen after he paid Daniels’ $130,000 shortly before the 2016 election to stay quiet about her allegations of an affair with Trump.

CNN's Kristen Holmes and Laura Dolan contributed reporting to this post.

Trump posts – and deletes – about upcoming witness in his criminal trial

From CNN's Kaitlan Collins and Jeremy Herb

Donald Trump railed against the timing in which his team became aware of Tuesday’s witness in his criminal trial in an early morning Truth Social post that has since been taken down.

“I have just recently been told who the witness is today. This is unprecedented, no time for lawyers to prepare,” the deleted post said.

He did not name the witness, but a source familiar with the matter told CNN that Stormy Daniels is expected at some point Tuesday.

Trump continued his usual bashing of the “biased” Judge Juan Merchan, and repeated that scholars and experts have said there is no case.

It’s unclear why the post was taken down. Trump is under a gag order that blocks him from speaking out about potential witnesses and most people in or associated with the court or the New York district attorney’s office.

He has already been fined 10 times for violating the order — the judge said Monday — “Going forward, this court will have to consider a jail sanction.”

Trump may have deleted the truth post about the witness as prosecutor Joshua Steinglass warned Trump's lawyers the first week of the trial that if he tweeted about any heads up prosecutors gave the defense about the witnesses, it would be the last time they gave such a courtesy.

"We will provide to defense counsel the name of the witness that will testify on Monday morning on Sunday. And if that should be tweeted, that will be the last time we provide a courtesy," Steinglass said on Friday, April 19.

This came after Trump's attorneys complained that they were not given enough of a heads up about who was going to testify.

CNN's Kristen Holmes, Kara Scannell, Jeremy Herb, Lauren del Valle, Kristina Sgueglia contributed reporting.

Trump's motorcade arrives at criminal court

From CNN's Kristina Sgueglia

Donald Trump’s motorcade has arrived at the Manhattan courthouse where the former president is expected to attend witness testimony in his historic criminal trial.

Stormy Daniels is expected to be called to the stand, a source familiar with the matter tells CNN. It is unclear if she will be called at 9:30 a.m. ET when court gets underway.

Here's what prosecutors have to prove in their hush money case against Trump

From CNN’s Kara Scannell and Lauren del Valle

Former President Donald Trump is on trial in Manhattan for his alleged role in a  hush money scheme  to silence his alleged mistresses before the 2016 election. He faces 34 counts related to “falsifying New York business records in order to conceal damaging information and unlawful activity from American voters before and after the 2016 election.”

Prosecutors need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that  Trump falsified business records with the intent to commit or conceal another crime , but they don’t have to prove that Trump committed that crime. The prosecution theory is that the second crime could be in violation of federal and state election laws or state tax laws regarding how the reimbursements to Michael Cohen were handled.

Prosecutors are expected to call Stormy Daniels to the stand Tuesday, a source familiar with the matter tells CNN. Daniel was paid $130,000 – the “hush money” payment – to keep her from going public before the 2016 election about her claim that she had an affair with Trump in 2006. The alleged reimbursement payment Trump made to Cohen is at the heart of the charges against the former president.

Trump’s attorneys have kept their defense close to the vest, but in court filings they’ve indicated that they plan to attack the credibility of Cohen and Daniels and paint them as liars who are motivated by grudges and money.

Outside lawyers who have been following the case closely say Trump is likely to argue that hush money payments are legal and distance the former president from the repayment scheme and bookkeeping handled by his trusted employees. They may also argue the payments were made to prevent embarrassment to Trump’s family and not to influence the election. Trump could also testify in his own defense. He has testified in two recent civil trials, after regretting not taking the stand in a prior civil trial, but the stakes are higher in a criminal case.

Prosecutors are expected to call Stormy Daniels to the stand today

From CNN's Kristen Holmes

Stormy Daniels attends the Venus adult entertainment fair in Berlin in 2018.

Prosecutors are expected to call Stormy Daniels to the stand Tuesday in Donald Trump’s historic criminal trial, a source familiar with the matter tells CNN. Its unclear if she will be called first thing Tuesday morning.

The adult-film star, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, was paid $130,000 – the “hush money” payment – to keep her from going public before the 2016 election about her claim that she had an affair with Trump in 2006.

The hush money payment on its own is not a crime. Michael Cohen sent the payment to a trust for Daniels’ then-lawyer Keith Davidson.

It’s the payments Trump made to Cohen, which prosecutors allege was reimbursement for paying off the adult-film star ahead of the election, that are at the heart of the 34 charges of falsifying business records.

CNN's Jeremy Herb, Lauren del Valle and Kara Scannell contributed reporting to this post.

Capitals’ T.J. Oshie hopes to play next season. He’ll only do so if his back problems are fixed

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — T.J. Oshie lingered on the ice long after many of his Washington Capitals teammates departed for the locker room following the loss that eliminated them from the playoffs.

His family was at all four games, including in New York, just in case.

They could be the final ones he plays in the NHL.

Oshie isn’t calling it a career just yet, but the 37-year-old winger acknowledged Tuesday he and doctors must find a solution to his chronic back problems before committing to return for a 17th season.

“I’d love to play next year, but I will need to come back with somewhat of a guarantee that my back won’t be — it’s hard putting everyone through the situation,” Oshie said. “I’d like to find just an answer and a fix to the problem before I make another run at it.”

Oshie’s back and other injuries limited him to 52 of 82 games during the regular season, and he played the series finale against the Rangers with a broken left hand.

“A broken hand is like a hangnail compared to what I go through with my back,” Oshie said, adding he’s often on the floor unable to move when it gives out. “There’s been a lot of just extra things that I have to do to make sure that my back is ready to play an NHL game.”

Already expecting center Nicklas Backstrom to remain on long-term injured in the final year of his contract after stepping away in November because of a nagging hip issue , general manager Brian MacLellan said the team will support Oshie whichever decision he makes and doesn’t have a date by which he’d like an answer.

“If he determines at some point that he feels good, he wants to come back to play, let’s go that way,” MacLellan said. “If he doesn’t, we’ll work it out that way, too.”

Oshie’s presence or lack thereof would certainly affect how the Capitals affect the offseason, whether they can use his $5.75 million salary space or need to fill a major void.

“He’s a big part of our team,” MacLellan said. “You have him, or you go out and find a guy.”

Oshie, who reached the 1,000 games milestone and scored the empty-net goal that clinched a playoff spot, long ago emerged as a popular teammate and fan favorite and was the Capitals’ emotional engine for nearly a decade while playing through injuries.

“He’s a warrior,” captain Alex Ovechkin said. “He’s a guy who brings energy on the ice and off the ice. He have so much respect from the coaching staff to the fans and from the players, as well. He’s a guy who brings everything to this group on the ice and off the ice.”

OVECHKIN’S PURSUIT

After scoring just eight goals in his first 43 games of the season, Ovechkin went on a tear down the stretch to finish with 31 before being held without a point in a playoff series for the first time. At 853, he’s 42 away from Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career record , turns 39 in September and has two years remaining on his contract.

“If I make it, it’s good, but it’s still 42 goals,” Ovechkin said. “It’s kind of a long way. But it’s possible if you’re going to be healthy, yeah.”

MacLellan joked about penciling in Ovechkin for 42 next season, knowing full well it’s unfair to expect one of the oldest players in the league to carry Washington offensively. His hope is also to add through trades and free agency to give Ovechkin some help.

GOALIE QUESTIONS

Charlie Lindgren earned the No. 1 job from Darcy Kuemper and carried the Capitals to the playoffs starting a career-high 48 games. He has one season left on the three-year, $3.3 million contract he has outperformed and looks in line for a major raise, whether it’s with Washington or someone else.

“We’ll kind of see what happens with that,” Lindgren said. “It’d be nice, I’m not going to lie. Obviously it’s something that I’m working hard and I’m doing everything I can not just for myself but for my family and for the team and the organization.”

While Lindgren is eligible to sign an extension July 1, MacLellan expects conversations but to go into the season without a new contract. He also expects Kuemper, two seasons into a five-year contract worth $26.25 million he got after backstopping Colorado to the Cup in 2022, to bounce back and have a good season.

China’s Xi Jinping visits France in first post-pandemic trip to Europe

Chinese leader Xi Jinping is visiting France, and the friendlier countries of Hungary and Serbia. Trade tensions and Russia’s war in Ukraine are on the agenda.

PARIS — Making his first trip to Europe since before the pandemic, Chinese President Xi Jinping was treated to a state banquet at the Élysée Palace on Monday and will visit the French president’s favorite childhood vacation spot. But French hospitality hasn’t appeared to resolve tensions over trade or win Beijing’s commitment to take a tougher line on Russia.

In remarks alongside Xi after a day of talks, French President Emmanuel Macron framed the war in Ukraine as an issue of national sovereignty and territorial integrity — and an existential threat to Europe.

“Without security in Ukraine, there can be no European security,” he said, adding that he appreciated that Xi had reiterated a commitment “to abstain from selling all arms and aid to Moscow, and to strictly control the export of dual-use goods.”

Customs data suggests that Chinese companies have continued to export dual-use products necessary for Russia’s weapons production, according to a report from the Carnegie think tank.

In his own remarks Monday, Xi said his country has “actively sought peace.” He called for a global cease-fire during the Paris Olympic Games this summer, and on Ukraine, he called for a summit that would bring the parties together “on an equal playing field.” He added defensively that the conflict should not “be used to project responsibility on a third-party country, tarnish its image and incite a new cold war.”

In Europe, Xi faces a continent that has grown more skeptical of Beijing since his last visit five years ago — although generally not as skeptical as the United States.

Even before Russian tanks rolled on Kyiv, Europe was rethinking its relationship with China. Outraged over crackdowns in Xinjiang and Hong Kong and concerned about economic coercion, Europe knew it needed to change its approach.

Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine seemed to cement a shift toward a more hawkish view, as the European Union and most of its member states reconsidered the wisdom of engaging with authoritarian regimes. In the past two years, the European Commission has led a push to “de-risk” the relationship with Beijing, focusing on trade and supply chains.

“The mood has changed at many levels,” said Philippe Le Corre, a French analyst with the Asia Society Policy Institute.

Even still, Europe remains more inclined toward China than U.S. officials may want it to be. The European approach to Chinese-owned TikTok is telling. While Washington sounds the alarm about security concerns , the response in Europe has been largely muted.

European countries remain divided on whether China should continue to be considered a “partner for cooperation” or, as U.S. officials argue, more of a potentially dangerous rival.

“Europe considers China a systemic rival, but it cannot do without China’s market,” said Wang Yiwei, director of the Center for European Union Studies at Renmin University in Beijing.

Beijing is eager to exploit the policy gaps between the Europe and United States, as well as the differences in attitude among European countries, analysts say.

After meeting with Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in France, Xi will move on to the friendlier countries of Hungary and Serbia.

In his public remarks on Monday, Xi portrayed China as a country that valued open markets and had “a thirst for fairness and justice.”

E.U. officials have accused China of “flooding” the electric vehicles market. Partly at the urging of Macron’s government, they have been investigating Chinese subsidies for those vehicles. And they have threatened to impose tariffs if the investigation determines China is artificially deflating prices in a way that hurts European manufacturers.

The European Commission has also launched probes into China’s subsidies of wind turbines and public procurement of medical devices.

Von der Leyen said she had an “honest exchange” with Xi in their closed-door talks Monday. She said that China’s “overcapacity” in electric vehicles and other areas had resulted in “unsustainable” imbalances and that Europe would “not waver from making tough decisions” to protect its market or its security.

According to Chinese state media, Xi said during the meeting that there was no such thing as “China’s overcapacity problem,” and that he hopes E.U. institutions adopt “a positive policy” toward China.

Macron later claimed a small victory, announcing that Xi did not wish to see retaliatory tariffs imposed on French cognac, as China has threatened. The French president’s gifts for Xi had included — none too subtly — bottles of cognac.

There may be “little concrete result” from Xi’s visit to France, because while “the optics are going to be extremely positive,” the French have some tough messages to deliver, said Abigaël Vasselier, head of foreign relations at the Berlin-based MERICS think tank.

The optics will get more positive as Xi moves east. A railway between Hungary’s and Serbia’s capitals, Budapest to Belgrade, is under construction as a signature Chinese project, part of Xi’s “Belt and Road” investment and trade initiative.

In those stops, Xi is expected to try to sell China as a preferred partner over the United States. He is visiting Serbia the same week as the 25th anniversary of the 1999 American bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, which remains a lightning rod for anti-NATO and anti-American sentiment in Beijing.

Xi’s visit to Hungary and Serbia serves as a warning signal to the E.U. about any actions it might take against China’s interests.

“While China is willing to make positive efforts toward cooperation with Europe, Hungary, as a form of diplomatic defense, could help oppose any E.U. measures unfavorable to China,” said Song Luzheng, a researcher at Fudan University in Shanghai.

The U.S. presidential race may come up during Xi’s visit, and Europe’s position might get more complicated by the end of the year if Donald Trump returns to the White House, Song said, adding that this could create an opportunity for closer cooperation between China and Europe.

Xi’s trip to France reciprocates a visit from Macron last year. The French president raised eyebrows in Washington and Brussels with off-key remarks on Taiwan , the self-governing island that has never been controlled by the Chinese Communist Party but which Beijing considers part of its territory.

On his way to meet Xi, Macron was asked by journalists about policy on Taiwan. He said that the worst thing to do would be “to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the U.S. rhythm and a Chinese overreaction.”

Europe, he continued, risks getting “caught up in crises that are not ours, which prevents it from building strategic autonomy.” He has also said that Europe was at risk of becoming a “vassal” and that the continent should reduce its dependence on the “extraterritoriality of the U.S. dollar.”

Though few doubt that Europe and the United States see Taiwan differently, most officials and analysts were puzzled and angry that Macron would say so directly and publicly.

Macron repeated the “ vassal ” language shortly before Xi’s arrival. In a speech last month at the Sorbonne in Paris, he argued that Europe needs a more credible defense policy to stand up to Russia and not be a strategic “vassal” to the United States.

Xi may have been playing to that sentiment when he noted in a written statement at the outset of this trip that “Both China and France value independence as two major countries.”

Chiang reported from Taipei, Taiwan.

The term carrier refers to any party who is in charge of the contract of carriage and will transport the goods by any mode of transportation.

There can be 2 types of places of receipt when using FCA, sellers facility or another place (usually a freight forwarders facility or port/airport terminal). The seller must load goods into a transport vehicle (arranged by the buyer) only when the place of receipt is the seller’s facility.

When the place of delivery is an inland point, Incoterms® 2020 allows the buyer to instruct the carrier to issue a bill of lading with an onboard notation. The seller must provide the buyer with the documentation with the same clause as explained in the contract. It has to be noted that the seller is under no obligation to carrier clauses.

The seller must clear customs for exports and freight and international transport arrangements must be performed by the buyer.

Incoterms 2020 FCA

Doing Business

When the named place is another than sellers facility, the seller is not required to unload as it is assumed that the receiving facility has the means for it (i.e a warehouse freight station for LCL cargo or a Container Terminal).

FCA can be used for any mode of transportation or a combination (multimodal)

It is advised that the buyer selects clearly the place of delivery. For instance “Kuehne and Nagel - East Shanghai Road NO. 5 Room 1103, Huaqiao Mansion, 215400 Suzhou City” is more explicit than simply “Kuehne and Nagel Shangai Warehouse”.

FCA is one of the most favorable terms when the buyer wants to have control of costs at origin and international transportation through a nominated freight forwarder. FCA is commonly used in conjunction with a Forwarder Cargo Receipt (FCR), a document that proves that cargo has been received by a forwarder with the intention to be transported as per buyer’s conditions. FCR is a proof of delivery and can be used for document compliance instead of Bill of Lading

FCA requires that buyers pays for origin terminal handling charge when cargo is containerize. A “carrier” means any company that has been nominated by the buyer to act as a transport agent, meaning that a freight forwarder qualifies as carrier in this case.

It is recommended to use FCA instead of FOB for containerized cargo. In the case of FCL, the container can be placed at the seller’s facility. If cargo will be transported as LCL, in most cases it is required that seller deliver goods into a nominated warehouse for consolidation.

Incoterms 2020 FCA Delivery

Carriers clauses

There are different carrier types that could take delivery. An inland carrier for road transportation, a freight forwarder for multimodal transportation, an airline, rail transport company or a shipping line. For ocean shipments, it is common to use “On Board” when goods are on the vessel. When the Bill of Lading is issued before on board, “Received for Shipment” is allowed by carriers (i.e. Freight Forwarders).

At sellers facility (shipper must load cargo into container):

At forwarders facility (buyer pays for unloading cost):

At the airport:
