Artist Biography

Lauded by peers and critics alike, Chris Rock is one of our generation’s strongest comedic voices. With a career spanning more than three decades, Rock has enjoyed ongoing success in both film and television as a comedian, actor, writer, producer, and director.

In March, Rock made his highly anticipated return to live comedy with his Ego Death World Tour 2022.

He can recently be seen in Sally Potter’s short film, “Look at Me” and David O’Russell’s, “Amsterdam.” Next up he can be seen starring in the Higher Ground produced biopic, “Rustin.” He is also set to direct an Untitled Chris Rock project in 2023. His animated series “Everybody Still Hates Chris” is set to stream globally on Paramount + and Comedy Central. Rock serves as the executive producer and narrator.

In 2021 Rock starred as Loy Cannon in season 4 of FX’s Emmy-winning drama series “Fargo.” He also teamed up with Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures in the reimagining of the newest Saw franchise movie, “Spiral,” in which he produced and starred in. His most recent standup special, “Total Blackout: The Tamborine Extended Cut,” is currently streaming on Netflix.

In 2014 he led the ensemble cast of “Top Five,” a critically acclaimed comedy feature that he also wrote and directed. In 2009 Rock ventured into the documentary world as a writer and producer of “Good Hair,” and in 2014 he executive produced “Eat Drink Laugh: The Story of the Comic Strip,” a documentary recounting the history of one of New York’s most famous comedy venues. His feature acting credits include The Week Of, the Grown Ups and Madagascar franchises, 2 Days in New York, Death at a Funeral, Nurse Betty, Dogma, the hip-hop comedy CB4, and New Jack City.

His television work includes serving as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” from 1989 - 1993 and as executive producer, writer and narrator for the series “Everybody Hates Chris.” The series ran from 2005 - 2009 and is still one of the highest rated syndicated shows in the world.

In 2011, Rock made his Broadway debut starring in Stephen Adly Guirgis’s “The Motherf**ker With The Hat.”

Rock has won four Emmy Awards, three Grammy Awards, and is a New York Times Best-Selling Author. In addition, he received two nominations for the 2016 Emmy Awards, for Outstanding Director for a Variety Special for “Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo,” and Outstanding Special Class Program for the 88th Annual Academy Awards.

Chris Rock Plots First Stand-Up Tour in Five Years

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

After a five-year break, Chris Rock is making his return to the live comedy circuit with the Ego Death world tour. The trek — which will begin with a 38-date North American leg — marks Rock’s first run since his Total Blackout stand-up tour in 2017 and 2018 (at the time, that was his first tour in nearly a decade).

The Ego Death tour will begin April 2 with two shows at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The current slate of dates includes stops in Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Toronto, Denver, Oakland, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, and more. He’ll also play New York’s Radio City Music Hall in October and follow that show with performances in Chicago, Vancouver, and Washington D.C. before wrapping Nov. 17 in Los Angeles at the Dolby Theatre. Ticket sales begin Friday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster .

In the half-decade he’s spent off the road, Rock found creative outlets in film and TV. Last year, he joined the cast of Fargo as Loy Cannon in the show’s fourth season and starred alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Marisol Nichols in Spiral , the ninth installment of the Saw film series.

But as Rock noted in an interview with Esquire last year, he’s always thinking ahead and has kept a journal of ideas for over three decades. “You read it over, and you’re like, Oh, that’s good for stand-up. Or Oh, that would be good for script,” he said. “And then there’s some other shit, you’re like, Oh, when I die, provided I don’t fuck up my career, people are going to think this shit’s really interesting.”

Not quite a revelation, Chris Rock’s Chicago Theatre show still satisfies

In a set that’s more about jokes than insights, the comedian sounds off on pop culture, single life and that will smith thing..

GettyImages_1385591694.jpg

Chris Rock (pictured March 15 in New York) is touring in the wake of getting slapped by Will Smith on the Academy Awards stage.

Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images

The comedian who once called a special “Never Scared” doesn’t carry himself like someone afraid. Chris Rock still jokes freely and provocatively about such touchy subjects as abortion, race and, in one unfortunate case, Jada Pinkett Smith.

But, as he said Thursday in the first of four shows at the Chicago Theatre, “I gotta watch what I say!”

Cancellation is an ever-present threat for every comedian, no matter how revered. And that anxiety extends to the lobby, where patrons have to pass through a metal detector and put their phones in pouches in order to see the ostensibly fearless funnyman.

Over the years, there have been Chris Rock sets packing surprises — that the wacky guy from “Saturday Night Live” could be such a deep thinker or that a complexity could be distilled to such a perfect catchphrase or that the roaster of relationships could be so humble in assessing the collapse of his own.

This is not such a set. Called “Ego Death,” it’s a collection of effective Chris Rock product touching on his life, some hot-button issues and the state of the country. It’s not a revelation, and there’s never a stretch of prolonged, gut-busting hysterics like he’s achieved before. But it’s still a night spent in the company of an excellent teller of excellent jokes.

When this tour started, Rock had just taken the smack heard ’round the world, a slap from an offended (and later apologetic) Will Smith on the Oscars. At first, he avoided discussing the incident on stage, saying he needed to process it.

Now, he does — but in the context of one of his broader themes: victimhood. While some race to the E.R. for a paper cut, Rock said, he brushed off the pain and got back to work. “I took that s- - - like Pacquiao,” he bragged.

One of the biggest laughs of the night came when he referred to his vulnerable role in “New Jack City,” noting that, while Smith once portrayed the mighty Muhammad Ali, “I played Pookie!”

He could have fought back, he said, but he remembered his parents’ rule: “You don’t fight in front of white people.”

Pop culture is still on the mind of the man who tosses around mentions of celebs as varied as Vera Wang, the Tinder Swindler and Migos. Rock’s recent heroes include Lil Nas X (for being utterly himself) as well as Kris Jenner, a model in-law for welcoming all manner of broken Black people into her family (or so her TV show portrays it). Speaking of Caitlyn Jenner’s ex, when Rock talks about trans people, it’s with admiration, in contrast to his sometime collaborator Dave Chappelle.

On the political side, Rock’s gags about Donald Trump’s flaws and Joe Biden’s age say nothing new about the nation’s most joked-about men. More successful is a bit about Hillary Clinton blowing her presidential chances by ignoring instructions from God.

Later, the show takes a turn to the personal, following up on the divorce he recounted in his last Netflix special, “Tamborine.” Without mentioning current love interest Lake Bell, Rock does says he’s single and dating but treading carefully to avoid a #MeToo scandal. As an illustration of what he’s dealing with, he displays on a giant screen some texts from a female acquaintance with a very explicit proposition.

If Kevin Hart’s 2020 special “Zero F- - -s Given” didn’t give you enough insight about how a rich comedian can spoil his children, Rock offers some of his own confessions about lavishing luxuries on his offspring. An overlong anecdote about his daughter breaking school rules has some interesting thoughts about decisions regarding discipline. But Rock loses some relatability as he goes on and on about the perks of her private school, where a class trip means flying the teens to Portugal.

And when he gushes about his daughter landing in culinary school in Paris, all of the exulting comes off as smug but at least allows a callback to one of Rock’s classic punchlines: “I kept her off the pole!”

Review: Moonlight’s ‘Escape to Margaritaville’ lifted by its laid-back lead singer

Ashley Moniz as Rachel and Andrew Polec as Tully in Moonlight Stage Productions' "Escape to Margaritaville."

The Jimmy Buffett jukebox musical stars Andrew Polec, who has played the Grinch at the Old Globe for the past three years

“Escape to Margaritaville,” the Jimmy Buffett jukebox musical that made its world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse in 2017, is back.

On Wednesday, Moonlight Stage Productions opened the first San Diego County production of the show since the Playhouse sent it off to Broadway for a brief run.

And just like in the original run in La Jolla, the Moonlight production makes up for the show’s less-than-inspired book with the boozy, feel-good vibes of the late Buffett’s party-hearty spirit.

Audience members are showing up Vista’s Moonlight Amphitheatre dressed in grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts; they’re singing along to the songs; they’re doing callbacks for Buffett’s lost shaker of .... “Salt! Salt!”; and they’re batting beach balls to each other during the finale.

For those who missed “Escape to Margaritaville” the first time around, it features a 25-song score by Buffett that includes many of his hits and more songs he wrote for the show.

Bookwriters Greg Garcia and Mike O’Malley set the story on a tropical island, where Buffett’s alter-ego, Tully, is a cheerful singer-songwriter who entertains tourists at a beach bar. His carefree life is shaken when he falls in love with Rachel, a career-focused scientist who arrives from Cincinnati on a bachelorette trip with her best friend, the soon-to-be-married Tammy.

The slim story involves Tully getting Rachel to loosen up and Tammy figuring out her own romantic destiny (hint, it’s not her fat-shaming fiancé). There’s also a volcano, a long-haired beach bum who misplaces his salt shaker and some dancing insurance agent zombies (yes, you read that right).

The book isn’t good, but the music is lively and fun. And thanks to director Noelle Marion’s colorful and high-spirited production, it’s breezy and fun if you came for a good time. A big plus in this production is Moonlight’s new high-definition video wall which produces a terrific volcano effect (created by projection designer Blake McCarty), and the costumes, props and some scenic elements from the musical’s national tour.

Starring in the show as Tully is someone many San Diego theatergoers have seen onstage but may not recognize without his green makeup and furry pompadour. Andrew Polec, who has played the Old Globe’s Grinch for the past three seasons, is a perfect fit for the part.

Not only is the San Diego resident a laid-back guy, he’s also a longtime fan of Hawaiian shirts and that shaggy blonde hair is all his. He’s also married to the show’s director, Marion, and she knows what he’s capable of. Polec made his breakthrough in the 2016 rock musical “Bat Out of Hell,” and he’s got strong guitar skills and a big rock tenor voice. He can also sing in a key well above Buffett’s baritone so his solos are knockouts.

Other standouts in the cast are strong singers Ashley Moniz as Rachel and Jazley Genovese as Tammy, and endearing Fisher Kaake as island bartender Brick. And adding much of show’s comic entertainment are Constance Jewell Lopez as Marley and David Kirk Grant as the one-eyed beach bum J.D. Music director-conductor Tamara Paige leads a nine-piece beach band from the pit and Jimmy Locust designed choreography.

Buffett last-ever public concert before his death last September was in San Diego on May 6, 2023. He had a legion of fans here and no doubt they’ll make his “Margaritaville” spirit feel welcome at the Moonlight.
