Recent tour reviews

It was advertised as a "stripped back"show, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

For Elbow, this meant just the 4 members of the band, plus Alex Reeves on drums - none of the usual strings or brass normally found on tour with them, and no fancy back drops and lighting, just a fairly basic light show.

It was a fairly intimate gig in the O2 Ritz, something like 1500 people, and it was amazing! Guy Garvey comes across as the bloke next door who would find any excuse to go for a pint with you. Everyone is his friend.

They played 8 songs, 3 from the new album, and 5 from older albums - and they were amazing! They are great in the big arenas, but even better in a smaller venue!

Guy and the gang did not cease to amaze with pitch perfect vocals and brilliant interaction with the crowd. “Manchester harmony” he called it. The venue is amazing and just the right size with trains passing by to Deansgate. This causes a great response from the crowd and passengers all waving at each other.

My only negative is the sound curfew as it’s a built up area. I’m sure those all sat on their balconies getting it free wouldn’t complain. Well may be about Kylie the night after.

In all, a brilliant set list and performance from Manchester’s finest. Can’t wait for new album.

Elbow and John Grant, Magnificent I say.

My fist Elbow gig and also my first John Grant gig

Up first an eight song set by John Grant fizzling with good humour, swear words aplenty and that beautiful tenor voice Marz and Glacier were outstanding.

Elbow came on stage just after 8:30, Mr Garvey in 90’s handwaving top form, a little demob happy as this was the last gig for some time as he played master of ceremonies though Elbows greatest hits. The voice is just so pure as the music swells around his word pictures and his bro romance with John Grant is hilarious . The whole set was outstanding with light show and back screens to match.Disapointed that there was no sad captains, but the duet between Garvey and Grant made up for it. Loved little fictions, grounds for divorce, Lippy kids but hearing one day like this live for the first time made my night. Come back soon Elbow, until then I will throw those curtains wide.

John Grant Five Stars

The whole evening not enough stars in the universe to do it justice!

Elbow live in Manchester: a belated, but brilliant opening of the Co-Op Live

May 14, Co-Op Live: the Bury band christened the UK's biggest arena following weeks of delays with a suitably massive set

After three weeks of chaos and delays, tonight Elbow are the first act to play Co-Op Live, the UK’s biggest arena with a capacity of 23,500. Addressing the crowd before playing the luscious indie-waltz of ‘The Bones of You’, hometown hero frontman Guy Garvey says: “Everybody who’s been working on this building has been so excited today – so nervous and excited – and there was already electricity in the air before you got in here, and now it’s been thoroughly amped up.”

The Bury band were actually the fifteenth event scheduled to take place at Co-Op Live, but numerous high-profile setbacks have seen it compared to Manchester’s version of the Fyre Festival and dubbed ‘Co-Flop Live’. Added to that, there’s the sobering juxtaposition of the city getting another enormodome in a climate where grassroots venues – which provide the key pipeline for arena-filling acts – are imperilled. This situation wasn’t helped by an executive director, who has now resigned, dismissing calls for a vital £1 ticket levy on all gigs arena-sized and above, while ironically claiming that some smaller venues are “poorly run”. The owners have since agreed to discuss the idea with the Music Venue Trust. Attracting high-profile shows like the MTV Awards to the city also comes at a time when spiralling rents are pricing young bands out of Manchester, and gentrification sees city centre venues like Night & Day threatened .

elbow live tour

Given the doggedly bad PR, expectations were so low, that if you make it through the gig without an air-conditioning unit falling from the ceiling onto your head, it might be considered a bonus. Inside, it’s sleekly pretty much the same as any other arena, albeit with a top-notch sound system. And, if there’s one band who can comfortably cut through the flux, it’s Elbow, who’ve spent ten albums defying expectations to emerge as national treasures. Dropped by their record label, they responded with 2008 Mercury Music Prize-winning ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ and the ubiquitous anthem ‘One Day Like This’, and have spent the next six albums forging forward creatively and resisting repeating that formula.

“Let’s open this venue properly!”, commands Garvey as Elbow raise the curtain with the jazzy croon of ‘Things I’ve Been Telling Myself for Years’ and the proggy samba-inflected ‘Lover’s Leap’ off new album ‘ Audio Vertigo ’ – and a brass section digs fully into the record’s Garvey-described “ seedy, gnarly grooves ”.  It’s a night of empathic character studies, big-hearted sincerity, and tracks brimming with needling details, particularly on the synth-driven ‘Balu’, a barstool-bard tribute to hedonistic friends, while the likes of ‘Station Approach’ are coded with the DNA of the city.

Garvey is a reliably charismatic presence, cajoling shimmering fingers during ‘Mirrorball’ (which is accompanied by a glitterball descending from the ceiling) dropping references to local haunts like Oxford Road bar Big Hands, joking that his hair resembles Swiss Toni (“Playing a hometown crowd is like making love to a beautiful woman”, he quips in reference to the Charlie Higson character), and marshalling different sections of the crowd into harmonising on the rollicking ‘Grounds for Divorce’. Before the sumptuous sorrow of ‘My Sad Captains’, he asks: ‘What do we make of this amazing room everybody? How do you feel about christening it?”

Encoring with ‘Lippy Kids’, a beautiful evocation of the piss and vinegar of adolescence that is transformed into a sing-a-long juggernaut, Garvey teases: “You’ve house warmed this beautiful new venue. Shall we sing one last song together? Anyone got any ideas? It’s got to be something unifying…sang in a northern accent from the heart. It’s got to mention soft-furnishings”, before ‘One Day Like This’ suitably brings the house – but thankfully not the air conditioning units – down, as the last tumultuous three weeks are washed away.

DREAMLAND MARGATE

No tickets on sale.

Following their incredible AUDIO VERTIGO arena tour around the UK, elbow will play a very special headline show at Dreamland Margate on Friday 07 June, with special guests, The Magic Numbers. Tickets are on sale now.

The landmark release of a tenth studio album in March of 2024 for one of the UK’s most beloved bands underlines the importance of elbow to the story of contemporary British music. Having established a reputation for crafting timeless music and cemented their position as one of the country’s most respected bands with their fourth studio album, the multi-platinum certified ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’, the band are now rightly regarded as one of the most influential acts of the last twenty years.

Their nine studio albums to date have seen elbow amass a host of awards, including a BRIT, a Mercury prize, and multiple Ivor Novello songwriting awards. After performing at the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony the band were granted the freedom of their hometown of Bury.

The new album was written and recorded in their individual studios in Manchester and London and progressed with a period together in the Cotswolds. Production and mixing were finalised at their spiritual home of Blueprint Studios, Salford, central to all elbow albums.

Jon Rahm withdraws from LIV Houston with foot injury a week before U.S. Open

HUMBLE, Texas (AP) — Jon Rahm withdrew from LIV Golf Houston after six holes on Saturday because of an infection in his left foot, with the U.S. Open set to start in five days.

There were no immediate details on the nature of the injury. He was seen wincing after one shot during the opening round at the Golf Club of Houston.

Rahm, the two-time major champion and former No. 1 in the world, opened with a 69. He had six pars on another day of low scoring before deciding to stop.

Rahm has not won since the 2023 Masters. He left the PGA Tour for the Saudi-funded LIV Golf League in December. While it has been 14 months since he claimed a victory on any tour, he was the only player to finish in the top 10 in every LIV event this year.

But the majors have been a slow start for the Spaniard. He tied for 45th in the Masters as the defending champion, and missed the cut in a major for the first time in five years at the PGA Championship.

The U.S. Open is next week at Pinehurst No. 2, a course Rahm hasn’t played.

Review: Elbow kick off the Margate Summer Series at Dreamland with a bang

By Beau Goodwin

Dreamland Margate had another legendary band grace the seaside venue with English rock band Elbow opening the Margate Summer Series of concerts.

Formed in the late 90s, they have had a phenomenal career with 10 studio albums, taking part in the London Olympics ceremony and also winning a Mercury Prize and Brit award.

Their show in Margate was both the start to their summer tour for ‘Audio Vertigo’, their latest release, as well as the first artist to kick off the summer season at Dreamland vintage fairground and open-air venue.

Other artists such as Suede, Simple Minds, Manic Street Preachers and Rudimental will also grace the Scenic Stage as part of Margate’s Summer Series.

Elbow was supported by solo artist Isaac Gracie and by the four-piece band The Magic Numbers. The two acts helped to warm up the audience and get them ready for Elbow, and by the time they took the stage to thunderous applause, the audience was at boiling point.

Across 19 songs, Elbow wowed Margate with a healthy mix of fans’ favourites and classics and some deeper cuts across their various albums.

They kicked the performance off early with a track from the recent LP, but the record's recency did not dull the crowd's enthusiasm as they sang along, excited for the iconic rock band’s set.

There was a consistent energy throughout the show, with all of the band members delivering a devoted and passionate performance.

Hits like ‘Grounds for Divorce’ and ‘One Day Like This’, taken from their fourth record ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’, were particular favourites and received the loudest response from the crowd when they were played live.

The theme of sing-alongs shined brightest with these two hits, with singer Guy Garvey splitting the Summer Scenic stage into two halves to sing various harmonies.

Pointing at the attendees when it was their turn to sing, he turned the people watching into his own personal choir, further adding to the positive and energetic atmosphere that Elbow had created.

There was an eclectic number of songs played live; however, the band did not overwhelm the audience with deep cuts, nor were they simply playing their greatest hits.

Songs like ‘Good Blood Mexico City’ and ‘Fly Boy Blue / Lunette’ were specific highlights of the show, bringing the crowd along through fast and heavy guitar riffs from Mark Potter, impassioned singing and thumping bass from Pete Turner.

New band member Alex Reeves played the drums throughout the set, shining on extended endings to songs like ‘Dexter and Sinister’.

The band also took time to enjoy the late summer evening, the clear blue sky providing a picturesque backdrop for the band as they slowed the performances down for songs like ‘Puncture Repair’ and ballads like ‘Lippy Kids’.

Both showcasing the talent of keyboard player Craig Potter, with Guy dedicating ‘Lippy Kids’ to “two beautiful children” in the front row. ‘Puncture Repair’ stripped the show down to just the keyboard and Guy, creating an intimate atmosphere that brought the crowd in even closer.

E verything you need to know about the Dreamland Summer Series

To enhance their performances on tour, the band also enlisted trumpets and backing vocalists. The addition of three extra members has the potential to overwhelm the crowd, but they are used sparingly. When used, the trumpets and extra backing vocals push the songs to new heights live, giving them all an anthem edge.

Their showmanship shines with the crowd interactions of lead singer Guy. From referring to Margate only as ‘Margaret’ for the whole show to joking with the audience during brief breaks between songs.

Before ‘Puncture Repair’, Craig on the keyboards stated how he hadn’t practiced this one before, causing Guy to state that fittingly for their surroundings, their performance was “quite like a high wire act” and he encouraged the audience to “picture Craig in tights”.

This wasn’t a singular incident, either. These small moments of interaction with the mass of people were consistent throughout the show. Guy stated early how this show was “truly lovely” and complimented their “beautiful” singing when called upon. Moments of banter repeated as well, with Guy joking how only one member of the audience “asked if we were okay” out of the roughly “4 and a bit thousand of you.”

There were a lot of mentions of the sea and the seaside as well. Before the encore, Guy joked that they wouldn’t come back, not “even if you do a rendition of ‘I do like to be beside the seaside’.”

Before “The Picture”, Guy discussed the idea of the body being given to the sea and turned to corruption, calling it poetic before stating how he fancied the “drama” of being “buried at sea”. Fitting with the seagulls and the sound of the waves behind them.

With the show closing out, the band gave their all for the biggest hit so far, ‘One Day Like This.’ Guy passionately asked the audience, “Is this our Dreamland?” A question that lingers in the minds of the people in attendance.

Elbow kicked off the summer series and their own tour with a bang, permanently leaving their mark on our Dreamland.

Across 19 songs, Elbow wowed Margate with a healthy mix of fans’ favourites and classics and some deeper cuts across their various albums. Picture: Beau Goodwin

Day in the life of Jack Nicklaus: Golden Bear stays busy at Memorial Tournament | Oller

elbow live tour

Jack Nicklaus will have had plenty of practice shaking hands by the time he congratulates the winner of the Memorial Tournament Sunday at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

I stopped counting at 150, but it’s safe to say Upper Arlington’s most famous Golden Bear shook well over 200 paws Wednesday as he moved along the 220 acres of golf course on his way to meet-and-greets, photo shoots, autograph signings, ceremonies, lunch, board meetings and dinner.

And he didn’t drop from exhaustion. That may be more impressive than him winning the 1986 Masters .

“I think he gets very primed for this event,” 2019 Memorial honoree Judy Rankin said. "And it means so much to him, he just decides he can be tired later."

Nicklaus is 84 but has more energy than a man in his 60s. I should know. I shadowed him from early morning through late afternoon Wednesday – “A day in the life of Jack Nicklaus at the Memorial” if you will – and I needed a nap by the time we parted company. Jack needed no such thing. He is like the Man of Steel, except Superman never smacked a 1-iron like Nicklaus could in his prime.

That prime is past, but the legacy lives on:

Nicklaus as golf’s greatest champion, winner of a record 18 major championships.

Nicklaus as Memorial Tournament visionary, founder and host.

Nicklaus as humanitarian, raising millions for children’s hospitals and charities.

Nicklaus as needler, applying a well-placed elbow of sarcasm into the ribs of those he likes.

Jack Nicklaus, Papa Bear, is comfortable around the cubs

The day began with Nicklaus and wife Barbara, or the First Lady of Golf as she is known in these parts, arriving at the practice putting green to shake hands and pose for pictures with officials, parents and kids involved in the Play Yellow initiative, a program in which the Nicklauses, PGA Tour and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals join forces to raise money for kids at local children’s hospitals.

Nicklaus listens to Jimmy Smith, whose 16-year-old daughter Madison died of colorectal cancer in October.

“The heartache just doesn’t go away, but things like this help,” said Smith, who arrived at Muirfield from Rockville, Maryland, as a guest of PGA Tour player and Play Yellow spokesperson Denny McCarthy.

Nicklaus nods, then engages McCarthy in a history lesson on the Masters, which he won six times. He shakes more hands before gravitating toward his favorite audience – kids. Cordial to adults, he lights up around 3 and 4 footers.

Nine Golden Cubs – current or former patients from Nationwide Children’s Hospital – swarm like bees around the Bear. Jack’s eyes light up. He signs their shirts, hats, anything they want.

“I’m going to sit here with my gang,” the man said, squeezing between two gigglers. “How long do you think I’ve been married?”

“Fifty years,” someone chirps.

“That’s a good guess,” Nicklaus says. “How about 64.”

An adult speaks up.

“You still look happy.”

Then, the Nicklaus wit: “We’re working it,” he says, patting Barbara’s leg.

Hayden Laycock is one of the Cubs. The 15-year-old Grandview Heights sophomore has a congenital heart block. Nicklaus has his own health issues. The two bond.

“He’s pretty cool,” Laycock says, adding that Nicklaus was “the Tiger (Woods) before Tiger. I know he was really good for his time.”

At least the teen knows that much. Many of the kids simply see a hunched older man in black pants and shoes with a gray sports coat and tangerine tie. They do not realize the ground they stand on, once forest and farmland, might be retail space if not for Nicklaus choosing in 1966 to give back to the area where he grew up by building a championship golf course that would attract the best players in the world.

Then again, Nicklaus is self-aware enough to know that he wouldn’t be standing here either if “I had missed about 10 five-foot putts.”

Had that happened, Nicklaus would have won fewer majors, earned less money and lacked the cache to create his own tournament in Dublin.

Fans recognize Jack Nicklaus as a member of golf royalty

But he made the putts, which turned him into a king of golf, which is what he resembled as he offered the “royals wave” while driving his cart to the 16th green following the Play Yellow event. As Jack and Barbara sped along the hilly cart paths – does he have a license for that thing? – a chorus of “Hey, Jack” hellos rang out among fans dotting the fairways.

There was even a fist bump.

Three things struck me about the constant attention: 1. It must feel good, especially since it’s been nearly 20 years since Nicklaus played a competitive round ( 2005 British Open ).; 2. I wonder if it’s easy to take the adulation for granted. 3. Celebrity must get exhausting. I mean, 200-plus handshakes?

Pertaining to point No. 3, the only time the sea of fans parted was when Ohio State coach Ryan Day and wife Nina showed up at the Play Yellow meet-and-greet photo opp. Suddenly, Nicklaus was left alone for a few minutes. He did not mind.

Another Ohio State coach arrived on the scene. John Cooper looks younger than his 87 years. While three years older than Nicklaus, he gushes like a little kid when recalling Jack’s generosity.

After getting fired at OSU following the 2000 season, Cooper received a call from Muirfield Village’s CEO informing him that his membership was ending because it was tied to his coaching job. Several years later, Cooper bumped into Nicklaus.

“He asked me why he had not seen me (at Muirfield Village),” Cooper said.

After hearing the explanation, Nicklaus informed the club to renew Cooper’s membership.

Nearly a quarter century later, Cooper wanted to thank Nicklaus again for the kind gesture.

Nicklaus’ response?

“We take care of all our friends.”

Ryan Day picks brain of ‘elite’ Jack Nicklaus

Eventually, Nicklaus and Day sit together on the nearby “Helen Nicklaus” bench, dedicated to Jack’s mother, who passed Aug. 16, 2000 – the Wednesday of the PGA Championship.

“I always like getting a chance to meet, know and study people who are elite. And he was,” Day says. “Just to be around him, listening to the mindset, you can pick something up. I had an opportunity a year ago to go down and spend some time at the house with Jack and Barbara, Nina and I both, and so it was great. We appreciate their support.”

The coach and golfer discuss OSU quarterbacks, NIL and recruiting. Nicklaus, who played golf at Ohio State, could talk Buckeyes football all day. But he does not have all day, because soon it is off to another ceremony.

Wednesday is Military Appreciation Day at the Memorial, sponsored by JobsOhio, and inside a huge tent located near the 16th green Nicklaus shakes at least 100 hands, including that of 76-year-old Bob Patterson, one of 61 living recipients of the Medal of Honor, the military’s highest award recognizing valor.

Patterson says he does not play golf as much as he works at playing golf. The native North Carolinian, who lives in Pensacola, Florida, gets a handshake from Nicklaus, who made golf look as easy as child’s play.

It is something to see a Vietnam veteran, who in 1968 destroyed five enemy bunkers while under fire, melt while meeting a man who fired golf balls into the air. Such is the power of Nicklaus.

“A lot of my friends served in the military,” Nicklaus says to the crowd of military men and women and their families. “It’s a big thing for us to say thank you. We don’t understand what you did, but we understand the results of what you did.”

Nicklaus launches into a brief history of Muirfield Village, telling the crowd it cost $2.5 million to build the course. When asked for his expectation of where the Memorial will be in a decade or two, he raises his index finger to the sky, signaling he wants the tournament to keep trending up.

More humor: “Notice how crooked that (finger) was. From holding a golf club (all those years.)”

At 11:35 a.m., Jack and Barbara hop back in their cart and head toward the clubhouse for lunch in the Captain’s Grill. More waves. More fans pointing out “There goes Jack.”

Lunching with a who’s who of the golf world

Inside the players' locker room, Nicklaus and his media representative, Scott Tolley, go over details of his upcoming afternoon speech at the honoree ceremony for LPGA Hall of Famer Juli Inkster. Then it is off to lunch, where Nicklaus shakes more hands. He exchanges a few words with Rickie Fowler, greets members of the Captains Club, including Rankin, Hale Irwin and Andy North, then checks out what’s being offered in the buffet line.

An hour later, he joins the procession of golf dignitaries, including PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley, who walk from the clubhouse to the driving range for the honoree ceremony.

Temperatures reach into the mid-80s. But if Jack is uncomfortable, he doesn’t show it.

The ceremony ends, but, unlike me, Nicklaus is far from finished. There is a Captains Club meeting to attend, then a dinner that will last until 9 p.m.

Finally, lights out. A 14-hour day comes to a close and the Bear gets to hibernate for the night.

Donald Trump visits Newport Beach on campaign fundraising tour

Former President Donald Trump visited Newport Beach Saturday during his first major campaign fundraiser swing through Southern California.

Trump visited Orange County after holding a fundraising event in Beverly Hills the night before at the home of businessman Lee Samson.

Early Saturday morning, supporters lined the streets near Pacific Coast Highway and Jamboree Road, hoping to catch a glimpse of Trump’s motorcade which arrived shortly before 1 p.m.

Tickets to the Newport Beach event ranged from $3,300 to $100,000 per person.

Around 400 people attended the fundraiser, which was held at the Harbor Island home of John Word, a health insurance company co-founder, along with his wife, Kimberly Word, and billionaire tech entrepreneur Palmer Luckey.

A supporter, Blake Marnell, said he drove from San Diego to await Trump’s arrival in Orange County.

“We do get a rap as a blue state and at the state level, those offices are solidly Democratic, but that belies the point that there are enclaves of conservative politics all throughout California,” Marnell said.

The Newport Beach event was Trump’s final stop in California after holding events in San Francisco on Thursday and Beverly Hills on Friday.

On the heels of his conviction on 34 felony charges on May 30, the Republican presidential candidate reportedly raised $141 million in May.

The Beverly Hills event reportedly raised around $6 million. The San Francisco event raised around $12 million which was hosted by David Sacks, a venture capitalist and former PayPal executive, along with his wife, Jacqueline Sacks, and venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya.

According to the Orange County Register, Trump has faced some criticism for relying on campaign donations to pay for his expensive legal fees. Some estimates said in 2024, he has reportedly spent over $100 million from donations to pay his lawyers.

Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on July 11, days before he is expected to be formally announced as the GOP’s presidential nominee at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

This trip marks Trump’s first visit to Southern California since the Anaheim GOP Convention in September 2023.

President Joe Biden is set to visit Southern California on June 15 for a major fundraiser at the Peacock Theater in downtown L.A. that will include appearances by former President Barack Obama and celebrities including George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Watch as Nasa astronauts give tour of Boeing Starliner after docking on ISS

Watch as two Nasa astronauts give a tour of the Boeing Starliner on Saturday 8 June.

The Starliner capsule safely docked with the International Space Station on Thursday, meeting a key test in proving the vessel’s flight-worthiness and sharpening Boeing’s competition with Elon Musk’s SpaceX .

The rendezvous was achieved despite an earlier loss of several guidance-control jet thrusters, some of them due to a helium propulsion leak, which Nana and Boeing said should not compromise the mission.

Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner, with veteran astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams aboard, arrived at the orbiting platform after a flight of nearly 27 hours following its launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

On arrival, Wilmore, 58, and Williams, 61, spent about two hours conducting a series of standard procedures, such as checking for airlock leaks and pressurizing the passage between the capsule and the ISS, before opening the entry hatches.

A live Nasa video feed showed the smiling new arrivals, wearing their blue flight suits, weightlessly floating headfirst through the padded passageway, one after the other, into the station.
