Best Kerala Elephant Experiences

In Kerala Elephant is a part of everyday life and has been named a state animal. An Elephant is worshiped and used in religious rituals and temple festivals, but also slogs it out in labor camps; it features prominently in Indian history and mythology but is also an icon of modern India. In order to give elephant conservation the same momentum of national pride that ‘Save the Tiger’ campaigns evoke, the government decided to declare the jumbo as a national heritage animal in 2010. Kerala has 700 elephants in captivity. Most of them are tuskers. Unlike African elephants, Asian elephants have tusks only in males. Each elephant is accompanied by mahouts and the duty of the mahout is to take care of elephants and bath and massage the elephant with rocks and husk of Coconuts.

In Monsoon, the elephants undergo Ayurvedic rejuvenation treatments known as SukhaChikiltsa which includes decoction with herbs, etc. Elephants in Kerala are used for religious ceremonies in and around the temples, and some churches and a few elephants work at timber yards.

1. Kerala Elephant Festival- Watch Thrissur Pooram

Thrissur is best known for its famous Thrissur Pooram Festival, which is the most enchanting spectacle with decorated elephants with brightly colored parasols. In Trichur alone, there are 250 elephants in captivity and they are a part of the day to day life. People of Trichur have a unique tradition of appreciating the beauty of elephants and it is considered prestigious to keep an elephant. The Kerala elephant festival takes place in the Malayalam month of Medam which usually falls in the month of April. Thrissur pooram happens in April- May every Year.   Temple elephants in Kerala inspire the kind of fan following reserved for movie stars elsewhere. The Kerala elephant festival is such an experience that it is just a necessary thing to add to your bucket list when in Kerala.

2. Bathe an Elephant in Kodanad

Since elephant in Kerala is also domesticated on a large scale, there are places where you can see elephant Kerala getting trained and taking baths. Kodanad is situated on the south bank of river Periyar, which is around 42 KM from Kochi, and the Elephant rescue centre for the central Kerala forest region is located in Kodanad. Bathe and massage of elephants and baby elephants are normally done with small flat rocks, and husk of coconuts like shown in the video below. Early in the morning at the Kodanad riverside, when mahouts bathe elephants, tourists can get a chance to participate and experience hands-on bathe and massage of elephants at Kodanad.

Thekkady is well known for the famous Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. There is an artificial lake formed by a dam across the Periyar river around which the sanctuary is located. Kodanad Elephant Sanctuary- Day Tour place near Kochi, en route to Munnar

Day Tour Kochi – Kodanad, is a magnificent experience because this is the only center where baby elephants are trained in the state of Kerala . Kodanad is a secluded but modern village en route to Munnar located nearly 45 kilometers east of Kochi. This beautiful place is on the banks of River Periyar and known for the “Elephant Kraal” or the “Elephant training camp”. This is one of the largest elephant training centres in Kerala. A mini zoo within the premises also attracts visitors and and the park has access via river boats to the seasonal pilgrimage center of Malayattoor church which is located on the opposite banks of the Periyar river, offers unspoiled and rustic views of surroundings. Kodanad’s rural locality with elephants attracts visitors, film crews,and foreign tourists all around the year.

History: In the 1950s, Kodanad used to be the largest of several elephant training centres for captured Elephants from the adjoining forest regions. In the 1970s, there was a ban to elephant capture by Government of India and from then on, Kodanad is primarily used as a rescue training center. Here, Elephants were trained by skilled people also known as ‘Paappaan’ in Malayalam language. Though capturing Elephants are banned now, Kodanad has just become the training centre for elephants so as to be used in the safaris. These elephants are trained perfectly for riding and heavy works like exploring the jungles, transporting logs of woods from one place to another. The animals from Kodanad elephant centre including the elephants have been recently rehabilitated to Kaprikkad, as the part of Ecotourism project named as Abhayaranyam, which is spread across 200 acres of natural forest.

Day Tour Kochi – Attractions

There are many walkways alongside the river and they offer a unique experience to the visitors. Tourists arrive at Kodanad fascinated by baby elephant’s various stages of development at the Care center. At least four to six baby elephants are brought in and trained every year. There are many walkways beside the river that give pleasant experience to the visitors. There is a small wildlife park at the centre which is a home of deer and other wildlife varieties.

Important Info: Traveler’s may reach the park before 9.30 AM IST and That’s the shower timing of the elephants in the camp and it’s worth watching.

Experience Elephants in Kerala - God's Own Country

If you’re ever planning to visit Kerala for a holiday, the one thing that has to be part of your itinerary should be elephant spotting. These magnificent creatures are just plain beautiful to watch. And in Kerala, they take elephants very seriously and have even named them to be the state animal. Hence, elephants being a part of the emblem of the Kerala Government.

Elephants are a part and parcel of everyday life in Kerala. There is not a day you’ll pass without seeing an elephant on the road. Kerala has one of the largest number of domestic elephants in India with the number as high as around 700. They also have around 7000 wild elephants with the number increasing every year.

Elephant Spotting

So for wild elephant sightings, there a quite a few wildlife sanctuaries and parks that you could visit to see elephants along with other wildlife animals. Since the elephants travel during certain seasons, you need to be there at the right place at the right time to get a glimpse of them, and probably even a small pot of luck.

So here are the top 3 places you could visit to spot wild elephants:

 Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in Thekkady, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one place where you can spot wild elephants. So during the driest months of March and April, one would be able to spot elephants and sometimes even tigers near the lake frequently. But since the number of wild elephants is in thousands in this park, you are almost sure to see elephants on your safari to this park. But the best time to visit the park would be October to June.

Anamudi Peak

Located in Munnar, the Anamudi Peak which literally translates to “Elephants Foreheads” is home to the largest surviving population of Asian elephants as well as home to some endangered species of elephants like the Gaurs and Nilgiri Tahrs. The best time to visit Anamudi Peak to catch a glimpse of the elephants would be around the months of November to February.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Popularly known as Muthunga Wildlife Sanctuary , which is considered to be Kerala’s second largest wildlife sanctuary is another popular site for elephant spotting. Over here, the jeep safari does not dwell deep into the forest but through the well-laid roads inside the park where you could be stopped by elephants or even other wildlife animals crossing the road. You could even go to the Madhumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu which is located nearby for elephant rides.

Elephant Bathing

Since elephants are also domesticated in Kerala on a large scale, there are many places where you can go for elephant rides and see them getting trained and taking baths. Here are the top 3 places you can visit:

Tusker Trail

 Konni Elephant Camp

This is one of the most popular elephant training centres in Kerala. Over here, baby elephants that are lost as they wandered away from their herd, injured or roaming alone are taken in for training. It is a very joyous sight to see these naughty baby elephants who are always very welcoming to visitors getting trained.

Elephant Festivals

Other than these training centres and elephant rides, it is commonplace to see the elephants in temples. Almost every temple festival calls for the presence of an elephant and hence almost every temple owns an elephant.

Thrissur Pooram

Of all such festivals, Thrissur Pooram is the biggest and grandest. This festival is filled with music and fireworks and the biggest attraction of all: the elephants decorated with “ nettipattam ” and standing in the center of the show. There are more than 50 elephants from various temples that are displayed here with the largest ones usually at the centre. This festival takes place in the Malayalam month of Medam which usually falls in the month of April. People from all over the world gather to watch this magnificent spectacle. But beware, the crowds are going to be massive and there would barely be anyplace to stand. Pickpocketing is also very common and hence carry very limited money along with you. But the festival is such an experience that it is just a necessary thing to add to your bucket list when in Kerala.

Guruvayur Temple Anayottam

Anayottam (“elephant race”) marks the beginning of the 10 day festival at the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple. In this event, elephants with their “ papaans ” (mahouts) on top of them race to the finish line. This sight is nothing like any other race seen ever before. And the prize for the winner? Well, the winning elephant gets the honor to carry the Thidambu, the replica of the idol of Guruvayurappan at every special religious occasion for a year.

In Kerala, back in the old days, it was a prestige to have an elephant in the house. So the elephant would have 3 mahouts to look after him. And the elephant would be fed with the best of all foods and treated like a king. Maintaining an elephant is a costly affair and hence having an elephant at your home symbolized how much wealth you possessed. This is the modern day equivalent of having a BMW or Porsche parked in your front porch.

So as you can see, I was serious when I said that the people of Kerala take their elephants seriously. From their protection to tourism and temple festivals to races, the people of Kerala keep elephants very close to their heart.

Punnathur Kotta Elephant Sanctuary Kerala

Housing more than 60 elephants in a lush green surroundings of Punnathur Kotta, the Punnathur Kotta Elephant Sanctuaries is one the largest elephant sanctuaries in India. It is located in Punnathur Kotta, which is approximately 3 km from the famous Guruvayur Temple and is used to train elephants to participate in major processions and daily temple rituals. Several tourists visit this destination on their way back from Guruvayur Temple. One can fed bananas to these elephants and click pictures with some of the popular elephants in the sanctuary.

Two main rituals of this sanctuary, the Gajapooja (worshipping elephants) and Anayottu (feeding elephants) are observed every year with several attendees, who are here enjoy the ceremony. During the normal days, the visitors can simply enjoy the view of magnificent elephants gazing in a lushly green gardens. The prime attraction of this sanctuary is a 500 years old palace, constructed by the erstwhile local rulers known as Punnathur Raja's.

The palace is constructed in a traditional style of Kerala known as Nalukettu, a design according to the climatic and geographical factors of the state. This particular design includes, a rectangular style building with a sloping roof, wooden carvings, and a central courtyard open from the top.

Punnathur Fort was purchased by the Guruvayur Devasom Board in 1975 to house all the elephants of the temple in a comfortable surrounding. The most famous and celebrated elephant in the history of Kerala was Kesavan, also from Guruvayur Temple. His majestic and behavioral qualities made him one of the most popular elephants. He passed away in 1976 after serving the temple for a period of 54 years. His 12 ft statue is constructed in front of the temple and every year on his death anniversary, a floral tribute is observed by the elephants on his statue.

Other Facts

The visitors can also witness elephants bathing and massaging, using a small stones and coconut husks. It is a pleasure watching these giant animals enjoying their bath. Also, don't miss the elephant training session, which is a fun to watch.

Essential Guide to Kerala's Famous Temple Festivals

Temple festivals in Kerala are elaborate and exotic. The festivals form part of each temple's annual rituals. They're commonly a tribute to the presiding local god or goddess. Each festival has a different set of legends and myths behind it, depending on the temple deity. However, most revolve around the presence of elephants to honor the deity. The majority of Hindu temples in Kerala own elephants, which are donated by devotees.

Overview of Kerala's Temple Festivals

Kerala's grandest and most well known temple festivals are its poorams , particularly the famous Thrissur Pooram. These festivals are related to one of the 27 stars in Hindu Astrology, called Pooram, and take place according to its auspicious position in certain months. 

Vela festivals are similar to pooram festivals in terms of scale. They occur at different times though, particularly after the harvest season in March and April.

You may also come across gajmela festivals in Kerala. These festivals are large "elephant pageants" with many decorated elephants.

At arattu festivals, the temple priest takes the deity out for a bath in the temple tank or nearby holy river.

Theyyam performances are a feature at temples in northern Kerala's Malabar region from November to May but most take place from December through March. The artists go into a trance and channel spirits during this fascinating "dance of the gods".

Patayani (also known as padayani ) is another type of folk performance, which happens at temples dedicated to goddess Bhadrakali in central Kerala from mid-December to mid-May.

What to See

While everyday temple rituals are modest in Kerala, the state's temple festivals are a highlight on everyone's social calendars. You can expect swelling crowds, processions of bejeweled elephants, traditional drummers and other musicians, colorful floats with people dressed as gods, and fireworks. The festivals are very noisy affairs. Frenetic percussionists, of which there are plenty, whip up quite a sound. Cultural programs, including classical music and dance performances, are also held.

A few temple festivals feature massive effigies of bulls or horses instead of decorated elephants. The effigies are carried in procession to the temple from surrounding villages. Such festivals include the Anthimahakalankavu Vela at Chelakkara in Thrissur district and Aryankavu Pooram at Shoranur in Palakkad district.

The Bharani Festival at Kodungalloor Bhagavathy Temple in Thrissur district is perhaps the most bizarre Kerala temple festival, with blood-smeared oracles proclaiming their devotion to the goddess.

When and Where are the Festivals Held?

The festivals happen at temples throughout Kerala, in South India. However, the larger pooram temple festivals predominantly take place in the Thrissur and Palakkad districts, in central to north Kerala, from February to May each year. Each temple festival usually runs for around 10 days, with celebrations concluding with the main procession on the last day. Some festivals are longer or shorter.

Which are the Most Important Festivals? 

Here are details of the top temple festivals to attend in Kerala to witness the biggest spectacles.

• Uthralikkavu Pooram (February) -- The eight-day festival at rather isolated Rudhira Mahakali Kavu temple, in Thrissur district's Vadakkancherry, is dedicated to Goddess Kali and has a picturesque setting bordered by paddy fields. There are day and night elephant processions, folk art and traditional musical ensembles. Three villages compete for the grandest displays. 
• Pariyanampetta Pooram (February) -- The seven-day festival at Pariyanampetta Bhagavathy temple in Kattukulam, in Palakkad district, is known for its Kalamezhuthu Pattu ritual. Images of the goddesses are drawn on the ground with natural colored powder, and are accompanied by devotional singing. Many traditional art forms are also on display, and there's an impressive procession (with elephants) on the last day.
• Machad (Machattu) Mamangam (February) -- The five-day festival at Machattu Thiruvanikavu temple in Vadakkancherry features a parade of adorned horse effigies on the final day.
• Attukal Pongala (February) -- Witness the world's largest congregation of millions of women cooking a special rice dish in pots for the deity at Attukal temple in Trivandrum.
• Ezhara Ponnana (February) -- Eight gold elephants, given to the deity by the erstwhile ruler of Travancore, grace the festival at Ettumanoor Sree Mahadeva Temple in Kottayam.
• Parippally Gajamela (March) -- This important elephant pageant is held at Kodimoottil Bhagavathy temple at Parippally, in Kerala's Kollam district. It has up to 50 caparisoned pachyderms. There are also cultural programs.
• Chinakkathoor Pooram (March) -- A rural temple festival at Chinakkathoor Bhagavathy temple in Palappuram, in Palakkad district. It has about 30 elephants, traditional percussion, processions of bull and horse effigies, and shadow puppetry.
• Kodungalloor Bharani (March) -- Thousands of sword-wielding oracles swarm Kodungallur Sree Kurumba Bhagavathy temple in a trance and hit their heads to draw blood as an act of devotion to the goddess.
• Arattupuzha Pooram (March or early April) -- Possibly Kerala's oldest pooram festival, held at Sastha temple in Arattupuzha, not far from Thrissur. Deities from about 20 temples in the area are carried on elephants to the temple as part of the festival.
• Peruvanam Pooram (March or early April) -- Another ancient and legendary festival takes place at Peruvanam temple, in Cherpu in Thrissur district. There's a spectacular procession with elephants, and a four-hour traditional Kerala percussion ensemble followed by fireworks.
• Nenmara Vallangi Vela (April) -- The state's most significant vela festival involves two neighboring villages competing with each other for the best pomp and show. It features displays of various traditional art forms, processions with elephants, and orchestra performances. The festival is held at Nellikulangara temple in Palakkad district.
• Thrissur Pooram (late April or May) -- Kerala's most famous pooram takes place at Vadakkumnathan temple in Thrissur during the Malayalam month of Medam . About 70 elephants are involved in its ceremonies, plus a percussion ensemble with about 250 musicians. A highlight is the kudamattom competition, which involves the rhythmic changing of an array of decorative umbrellas.

Welfare of Temple Elephants

Those who are concerned about animal welfare may want to skip attending Kerala's temple festivals, or attend one of the few that don't have elephants. Unfortunately, the temple elephants are frequently mistreated. The decorated elephants are forced walk and stand for long periods during the heat, and they find the loud environment distressing. When they're not working, the elephants are chained up and often neglected. An award-winning documentary film, Gods in Shackles , aims raise awareness about the issue and bring change to the elephants' living conditions.

Encouragingly, concern over the issue is growing. One temple in Kerala, the Nalapathenneeswaram Sree Mahadeva Temple in Alleppey district, has decided to use wooden elephants instead of live ones in its celebrations.

A Grand Cultural Event with Decorated Elephants

The event is known as Pooram Gajamela which translates to “Festival of Elephants.” The elephant processions gather the largest crowds with music, percussion, and classical dance performances accompanied by lots of frenzy. Some of these celebrations continue through the night and even last a few days. One can cherish the sight of elephants dressed up in gold and red silks.

Thrissur Pooram

This is one of Kerala's popular and grand festivals celebrated with much energy. It takes place during the calendar months late April or early May near Vadakkumnathan temple which is located in Thrissur. In the Malayalam month it is celebrated at Medam. There are nearly 30 elephants accompanied with 250 artistes beating rhythmic drums. This is a festival or celebration where a competition is organized called Kudamattom. It involves movement of decorated umbrellas in a step- by- step timely manner.

Arattupuzha Pooram

If you thought 30 elephants were so many, then take a look at this elephant festival organized near the oldest temple in Kerala, Arattupuzha Temple. With 60 elephants participating in this Pooram held during the summer months of Late March or Early April this is another grand festival of Elephants celebrated in Kerala.

Peruvanam Pooram

This is one of the first and most ancient elephant festivals celebrated in the state. Kerala’s Cherpu in Thrissur district’s Peruvanam Temple sees a fabulous procession with drums beating constantly for about four hours. This is one of the oldest and is believed to be around 1,500 years old. It is followed by colorful and noisy fireworks in this festival that is celebrated in Late March or Early April.

Parippally Gajamela

This culture festival is held at two places. The one at Kodimoottil Bhagavathy Temple has around 50 pachyderms participating in the huge affair. The other one is held near Chinakkathoor Bhagavathy Temple in Palakkad district’s Palappuram which has around 33 elephants participating in the cultural affair. Moreover there are cultural events held here. This includes puppet shows in shadows and horse and bull effigies and a traditional percussion. The festival is held during the month of March.

Pariyanampetta Pooram

This is one of Kerala’s lengthy festivals as it lasts for duration of one week/ 7 days. Held in the calendar month of February at the Palakkad district’s Kattukulam near Pariyanampetta Bhagavathy Temple. This specific elephant festival is popular for the ritual known as Kalamezhuthu Pattu. In this ritual, there are images and drawings of goddesses on the ground. This is done using natural powder colors. There is singing and various traditional art forms. The last day sees the special elephant procession.

Uthralikkavu Pooram

This is the lengthiest elephant festival also held in the month of February. But this one is celebrated over a period eight days. The festival is organized close to a standalone temple called Rudhira Mahakali Kavu in Vadakkancherry, Thrissur. The eight day long festival is dedicated to Goddess Kali. The highlight of this festival is its scenic setting with aligning paddy fields. This is one of the most celebrated and grand festival with elephant processions taking place in daytime and celebrations all through the night too. There are various traditional ensembles with music and percussion accompanied. There are three villages celebrating, competing with each other for the most extravagant parade.
