I-131, Application for Travel Document

Alert:  Beginning July 1, 2022, we will issue a new travel authorization document to Temporary Protected Status (TPS) beneficiaries: Form I-512T, Authorization for Travel by a Noncitizen to the United States, at our discretion if we find the beneficiary merits this authorization. We will no longer issue advance parole documents as evidence of our prior authorization for a TPS beneficiary to be permitted to reenter the United States if the beneficiary travels outside the United States.

Beginning July 1, 2022, we will issue a new travel authorization document to Temporary Protected Status (TPS) beneficiaries: Form I-512T, Authorization for Travel by a Noncitizen to the United States, at our discretion if we find the beneficiary merits this authorization. We will no longer issue advance parole documents as evidence of our prior authorization for a TPS beneficiary to be permitted to reenter the United States if the beneficiary travels outside the United States.

If you are a TPS beneficiary with an existing, unexpired advance parole document, you may continue to travel and seek reentry to the United States after a trip outside the United States through the period of validity printed on your advance parole document.

If you are a TPS beneficiary applying for a new travel authorization document, you should continue to use Form I-131, Application for Travel Document. If you have a pending Form I-131, you do not need to file a new application.

We will continue to issue advance parole documents to noncitizens with pending initial applications for TPS (Form I-821).

TPS beneficiaries and individuals with pending initial TPS applications should carefully read the Form I-131 Instructions which contain warnings about certain risks an individual may face if they are outside of the United States while USCIS is considering their TPS reregistration or initial application, such as missing important request for evidence or other notices or being denied TPS while outside the United States.

ALERT: Court decisions regarding DACA.

On Sept. 13, 2023, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas issued a decision finding the DACA Final Rule unlawful and expanding the original July 16, 2021, injunction and order of vacatur to cover the Final Rule. However, the court maintained a partial stay of the order for “all DACA recipients who received their initial DACA status prior to July 16, 2021.” See the Memorandum and Order (PDF, 1.35 MB)  and Supplemental Order of Injunction (PDF, 72.53 KB) .

Accordingly, current grants of DACA and related Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) remain valid until they expire, unless individually terminated.  In accordance with this decision, USCIS will continue to accept and process DACA renewal requests and accompanying applications for employment authorization under the DACA regulations at 8 CFR 236.22 and 236.23, as it has since October 31, 2022. We will also continue to accept initial DACA requests, but in accordance with the District Court’s order, we will not process initial DACA requests.

Current valid grants of DACA and related EADs will continue to be recognized as valid under the Final Rule. This means that individuals with DACA and related EADs do not have to submit a request for DACA or employment authorization until the appropriate time to seek renewal.

Please see the  DACA Litigation Information Page  for important updates and information related to court rulings on the DACA policy.

Use this form to apply for a reentry permit, refugee travel document, TPS travel authorization document, advance parole document (including parole into the United States for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit), or advance permission to travel for Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) long-term residents.

For information on travel documents, including potential immigration-related consequences of traveling outside the United States, see our Travel Documents page. If you are in the United States and you have an urgent need to travel outside the United States, see our Expedite Requests page and  Emergency Travel  page.

If you file this form to request an Advance Parole Document authorizing you to seek parole in the United States when you return to the United States after temporary travel abroad, and you depart the United States before we issue your Advance Parole Document, we will consider your Form I-131 abandoned unless you were previously issued an Advance Parole Document that remains valid for the entire time you are outside the United States.

If you file this form to request an advance permission to travel for CNMI long-term residents document, and you leave the CNMI without having an advance permission to travel document, your status will automatically terminate.

How to Get a Same Day or Emergency Passport

Passport panic here’s how to navigate getting a passport in under 24 hours..

Losing your passport, having it stolen, or realizing it has expired just before a trip can be a stressful experience. The State Department says it takes six to eight weeks for a standard passport application to be fulfilled in normal circumstances. However, due to a pandemic-related backlog , the current wait time for a passport is expected to be between 8 to 11 weeks . Even expedited passports are currently taking five to seven weeks to process.

Fortunately, there are ways to obtain a same-day or emergency passport that can help you get back on track and on your way. It won’t be easy, but it is possible. Provided you meet the criteria.

Here’s what you need to know about getting a passport in under 24 hours.

Can I get a passport in one day?

The short answer is, yes, you can get a passport in one day. But it will take time, patience, and immediate travel plans.

If it’s a life or death situation, apply for an emergency passport

To qualify for an emergency passport, you’ll need a genuinely life-or-death emergency that requires you to travel internationally. Per the Department of State , that includes having an immediate family member (defined as a parent, legal guardian, child, spouse, sibling, or grandparent) who has died, is dying, or has a life-threatening illness or injury. And you’ll need to prove it with a death certificate, a statement from a mortuary, a letter from a hospital, or similar documentation. That document also needs to be in English (or at least it needs to be translated into English).

You’ll then need to go to one of the 26 Regional Passport Agencies scattered throughout the country, which may not be convenient for most people. Those passport agencies are all located in major cities, such as Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, and Philadelphia. It’s a good idea to call the Department of State helpline (1-877-487-2778) to make sure you qualify before traveling. Sometimes, the agent on the helpline can schedule an appointment for you, though if not, all of the agencies offer walk-in appointments. Keep in mind the number of walk-in appointments is limited and varies by location. If you’re able to get an appointment, you’ll also need to have a completed passport application, proof of citizenship (such as a birth certificate or a previously issued U.S. passport), a valid government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license), a passport photo , and proof of immediate international travel plans.

If you don’t have a life-or-death emergency, use Urgent Travel service

If you don’t have a life-or-death emergency, there’s still a way to get a passport in one day. If you’ve already applied for a passport, but it hasn’t arrived in the mail, and your international travel is scheduled within five calendar days, you can use the Urgent Travel service . While it’s not technically an emergency passport, it is generally processed the same day. For this, you’ll need to make an appointment with a passport agency by calling 1-877-487-2778. This service is also available for those without a passport (and who aren’t currently waiting on an application to be processed) and have international travel planned within 14 days.

Last ditch effort: ask your elected member of congress to help

Another option is getting your elected member of Congress to help—some representatives, like Dianne Feinstein and Mike Crapo , share this shortcut on their websites, though success may vary.

How to speed up a passport application

If you have a few weeks and would prefer to put the task into professional hands, you might also consider using an expedited passport service.

Third-party expediter services, such as ItsEasy Passport & Visa Service or RushMyPassport , can assist with rushing your passport application. In a matter of days, they can submit your paperwork on your behalf, pick up your passport, and get it back to you when it’s ready. They charge an additional fee (on top of the standard passport application fee and expedited passport service fee). Still, they can often help navigate the ins and outs of the expediting process.

The fastest turnaround time RushMyPassport.com offers is one week for $799 or a two-week option for $599. ItsEasy Passport & Visa charges $45 for its four-week passport processing service and $895 for one-day service. “One- to three-day passport service requires urgent travel. Please contact us for details,” the agency advises.

However, keep in mind that these services have limited availability because expeditors also rely on the same small clutch of appointments being available.

How to Get an Emergency Passport Renewal in 72-Hours or Less

Home » Passports » How to Obtain a U.S. Passport

Front of U.S. passport book with epassport symbol.

Emergency passport renewals are only available to travelers with a documented life-or-death emergency that requires urgent international travel within the next 24-72 hours. This express passport renewal option can be used to renew an expired passport or one that does not meet the validity requirement for the country you need to visit.

Some reasons your passport may not be valid include:

  • Your passport expired - You cannot travel abroad with an expired passport .
  • Your passport expiration date is too soon - Different countries have different rules about how much validity your passport needs to have. Some countries simply require your passport to be valid for the duration of your stay. Some countries require three or six months of remaining validity on your passport.
  • Your passport does not have enough remaining visa pages - You cannot add pages to a passport . As such, it's important to know how many blank passport pages countries require . This includes both countries you are traveling to and through.

In situations like these, you only have two ways to get your travel document quickly. You can either submit your application at a regional agency or you can request emergency passport renewal through an authorized expediting service .

In some circumstances, it is possible to get a passport renewal in 24 hours. However, processing delays can extend the wait time for an emergency passport to up to 3 business days.

Be Sure You Qualify for Emergency Passport Renewal

Be advised: you can only renew a passport if you meet the following criteria:

  • You still physically have your most recent passport . In addition to the passport application, fees, and supporting documents, you need to submit your previous passport when applying to renew it. This means a lost or stolen passport cannot be renewed.
  • Your last passport was issued within the past 15 years . U.S. passports are valid for 10 years. So, even if your passport is no longer valid, it can still be renewed as long as the expiration date is less than 5 years ago.
  • Your passport is not extremely damaged . The US Department of State will not accept excessively torn, burnt, mutilated, or water damaged passports for renewal.
  • You want to renew an adult passport book or passport card . A child's passport book or card does not qualify for emergency passport renewal. That said, there are expedited passport services for getting a child's passport quickly .

If your existing passport doesn't meet the requirements above, it is still possible to get emergency passport service. You need to follow this guide to getting a new passport in an emergency ; the instructions outlined below are only for an urgent passport renewal.

The Department of State approves emergency passport applications for new and first time passports as long as you can provide sufficient proof of your urgent travel needs. If you have an emergency that requires traveling internationally but don't qualify for a passport renewal, check out our guide to emergency passport service .

If you do not have proof of urgent travel plans, there are several other methods of US passport renewal that you should explore instead.

Again, be aware that getting a same-day or one-day passport renewal is typically only available to those who have sufficent proof of a life-or-death emergency.

What Qualifies as a Life or Death Emergency for Urgent Passport Service?

Per the U.S. Department of State website:

To qualify for life-or-death emergency service, your immediate family member must be a parent, legal guardian, child, spouse, sibling, or grandparent.

To be clear, other relatives such as aunts, uncles, cousins do not qualify for life-or-death emergency service. Furthermore, simply visiting another country for medical treatments or medication doesn't qualify, either.

Note : You will need to supply sufficient proof to the Department of State to qualify for this level of expedited service.

The process remains the same as getting an emergency passport renewal for urgent travel, with the exception being how you make the appointment.

  • On Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (ET), call 1-877-487-2778.
  • If you have a life-or-death emergency after 8:00 p.m. (ET) on Mondays through Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays, call 202-647-4000. This number is not for use between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. (ET) on Mondays through Fridays.

Emergency Passport Renewal at a Regional Agency

If you choose to attempt an emergency passport renewal on your own, know that there is no room for error. Even a simple mistake can delay your international travel.

There are three steps that must must happen in order for you to renew a US passport at a regional processing center.

Depending on the time of year and the passport agency you call, it may require several attempts to finally reach a representative.

A walk in appointment is possible, but it is a big risk-especially if you have an emergency. Calling to make an appointment ahead of time is a better choice.

  • Completed Form DS-82 - This is the standard U.S. passport application document for renewing an adult passport.
  • Your most recent passport - Again, passports must have been issued within the past 15 years and be relatively undamaged (normal wear and tear is acceptable).
  • One passport photo - Passport photos must be taken within the last 6 months and follow the passport photo size and content guidelines issued by the Department of State.

When applying in person at a passport office, you can pay your passport fees with cash (exact amount only), check, money order, or most credit or debit cards (including most pre-paid cards).

  • Name change documentation - If your name has been legally changed since you got your previous passport, you also need submit an official document to support this.
  • Evidence of travel - Most, regional agencies require evidence of travel if you are applying for emergency passport services. This is the only way you can get the fastest processing time.

Emergency Renewals through an Expedited Passport Courier Service

Applicants who do not want to take the time to make an appointment or who are unable to travel to the nearest regional agency, can authorize a registered expediter to submit the US passport renewal application form on their behalf. For some people, this is the fastest, and most cost-effective way to get emergency passports . It also reduces the risk of errors or delays.

To get emergency passport service through a passport expediting service, follow the steps below:

  • Complete the online application form
  • Send the following to the passport expediter:
  • Completed and signed form DS-82
  • Your current passport
  • New passport photos
  • Payment for all fees
  • Any proof of your emergency travel needs
  • Any additional documentation of legal name change

Since you need a passport so quickly, you should select same day passport service and send your documents using two-way overnight delivery like priority mail express.

At this point, you should receive a status update including projected processing times for your emergency passport renewal.

  • When the application has been processed, a representative will visit the agency on your behalf and pick up your renewed passport. It will then be sent to you by express mail.

Can you get a same-day passport? We break down your options for a last-minute renewal or replacement

S ome travel mistakes are minor and can be solved pretty easily. Others — like an expired passport — can ruin your vacation before it even starts. Most countries will not allow you to travel with a soon-to-expire passport, so you could be out of luck if yours is close to the expiration date.

Related: When and how to renew your passport, according to the State Department

Of course, our No. 1 tip is to do whatever is necessary to avoid this dilemma in the first place. Here at TPG, we are big fans of calendar reminders that alert you when it's time to renew your passport. That said, you probably wouldn't be reading this if you weren't worried that your upcoming trip could be jeopardized.

Regardless of your exact circumstances, we have some tips for your predicament. Here's what you need to know to get a same-day passport — and save your vacation.

Passport entry requirements

Each country has its own passport validity requirements, but according to the U.S. Department of State , several countries say that your passport should not be within six months of expiring at the time of entry. Just to be safe, it's best to renew your passport before it hits that six-month mark, regardless of where you plan to travel.

Related: Best credit cards with travel insurance

First-time adult passport applicants must apply in person after gathering and preparing their passport application documents . Those renewing their passports can do so via mail or online, though the online passport renewal system is currently limited to a certain number of applicants each day on a first-come, first-served basis.

However, the passport application or renewal process takes up to two months, even if you renew online. Current passport processing times can take between six to eight weeks for routine processing and two to three weeks for expedited processing.

If you can't wait two to eight weeks for your passport, you may be able to get an urgent passport appointment as long as you have international travel booked within the next 14 calendar days, need a foreign visa within four weeks or have a life-or-death emergency.

Can you get a same-day passport?

In short, yes, but it may not be easy.

Same-day passport processing can only be done in person at one of the State Department's 26 passport agencies and centers . If you have not completed your passport application (required for new applicants and renewals), you should visit the Online Passport Appointment System to determine if you qualify for a same-day passport appointment. If you qualify, you'll be directed to enter your email address and phone number to verify your identity. From there, you can search a list of passport agencies and their appointment availability.

If you have already applied, you can call 1-877-487-2778 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern time on Mondays through Fridays or on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern time to request an appointment.

Related: 5 things I learned when renewing my passport for the first time

Either way, same-day appointments (or even appointments a few days out) are extremely limited, and you may have to travel a significant distance to secure one.

If no appointments are available, you can explain your circumstances to a State Department customer service agent, and they should be able to arrange a walk-in window at a passport agency. The agency could be an hourslong drive or more from your home, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

You'll need to bring the following:

  • Your completed passport application or renewal form
  • Your current passport (for renewals)
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of booked travel
  • A valid passport photo
  • Your payment, including the $60 passport expedite fee

When you do arrive, be prepared for a lengthy wait. You will likely not be the only person who needs a same-day passport, so bring your headphones or a book and take a spot in line. When it's your turn, a clerk will review your application or renewal form and give you a time to return and pick up your passport later that day.

When you do return, you could face a second wait to pick up your passport, but it's still better than missing out on your trip.

Bottom line

Although getting a same-day passport is possible, we do not recommend putting yourself through the stress. Be aware of your passport's expiration date, and make sure you allow ample time for processing, whether you are a first-time applicant or renewing your current passport.

Getting a same-day passport can save your vacation — but it's not a great way to start your trip. Still, it's good to be prepared for a worst-case scenario.

A Temporary Passport is a Short-Term Passport Replacement issued under emergency circumstances to allow citizens to travel back to their home country or to another destination, as defined by their government’s regulations.

How to Obtain an Emergency Travel Document

If you find yourself in dire need of a temporary travel solution, here’s what you should do:

  • Report the Loss or Theft : If your passport is lost or stolen, report this immediately to the local police and to your country’s consulate or embassy.

Visit Your Embassy or Consulate : Go to the nearest embassy or consulate of your home country. It’s wise to call ahead if you can, to understand the specific procedure and the operating hours.

Provide Necessary Documents : You may have to fill out application forms and provide identification such as a driver’s license, birth certificate, or photocopies of your missing passport.

Provide Proof of Travel Plans : Show your travel itinerary or tickets to prove the urgency of your situation.

Pay the Fee : There is often a fee associated with issuing a Temporary Passport or Emergency Travel Document.

Once you complete the required steps, the consulate or embassy staff will process your application. Depending on your case’s urgency and the office’s capability, you might receive your Temporary Passport in a matter of hours or days.

Be aware that a Temporary Passport may not be accepted for entry into all countries due to its limited validity. Also, you may be required to exchange it for a full-validity passport upon your return.

Use Case Scenarios for an Emergency Travel Document

  • Lost or Stolen Passports : If your original passport is gone, a Temporary Passport can rescue your travel plans.

Damaged Passport : A water-damaged or otherwise unusable passport might necessitate short-term replacement.

Expired Passport : If you’re abroad and your passport expires unexpectedly, you can obtain a Temporary Passport for immediate travel needs.

After Receiving Your Temporary Passport

Once you receive a Temporary Passport, safeguard it as you would a regular passport. Remember, it’s a crucial travel document that has been granted to accommodate your emergency travel situation.

Important Tips to Consider

  • Keep Your Embassy’s Contact Information Handy : In case of emergencies, you should know how to reach your embassy or consulate.

Make Digital Copies : Before traveling, make digital copies of your travel documents and store them securely online.

Check Country Requirements : Some countries have specific entry requirements; ensure your Temporary Passport meets these.

Understand the Limits : Remember that Temporary Passports are short-term solutions and come with restrictions.

Next Steps after Returning Home

Upon your return, you’ll typically need to apply for a new, full-validity passport. This process can be initiated at your local passport issuing authority. Promptly replacing your Temporary Passport ensures that you’re ready for future international travel without issues.

A Temporary Passport can be a lifeline in stressful situations, ensuring that unexpected circumstances don’t disrupt your travel plans. While we hope you never lose your primary passport, it’s reassuring to know that there is a system in place to assist travelers in urgent circumstances. For more details on Temporary Passports and other travel-related information, it’s always best to visit official immigration websites:

The List of Countries that Accept Emergency Passports

As an Amazon Associate, I earn a small commission from qualifying purchases. Learn more about this.

Traveling can be full of surprises, some not as pleasant as others.

Losing your passport or needing a quick replacement can be stressful.

But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

In this article, we will guide you through countries that accept emergency passports. Whether you’re stuck in a foreign place or planning, stick around.

1. European Union (EU) Countries

Frankfurt in germany, one of the countries that accept emergency passports

First on our list is the European Union.

If you’re holding an emergency passport, most EU countries will welcome you. T

his includes popular destinations like France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

In these countries, your emergency passport is just as good as a regular one, but remember, it’s always wise to double-check entry requirements before your trip, as rules can change.

2. United Kingdom (UK)

The UK, known for its rich history and iconic landmarks, is also on the list.

Here, an emergency passport is accepted for both entry and exit. It’s a relief, especially if you’re caught in a bind while enjoying the sights of London or exploring the Scottish Highlands.

Just ensure your emergency passport has all the necessary visas, as the UK is no longer part of the EU.

3. United States (US)

Crossing the Atlantic, the United States recognizes emergency passports for citizens of many countries.

If you dream of visiting New York, exploring the Grand Canyon, or walking the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an emergency passport won’t stop you.

However, it’s important to check if you need a visa or an ESTA approval , as entry requirements vary based on your nationality.

Our neighbor to the north, Canada, is known for its welcoming nature, and this extends to travelers with emergency passports.

Whether you’re visiting for business, leisure, or transit, Canada recognizes emergency passports. But, just like with the US, make sure your travel documents meet all visa requirements or exemptions.

4. Australia and New Zealand

Heading down under, both Australia and New Zealand accept emergency passports from the UK.

These countries offer breathtaking landscapes and unique wildlife.

However, it’s important to obtain the appropriate visas or Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) beforehand. Their immigration policies are quite strict, so being prepared is key.

5. Asian Countries

In Asia, countries like Thailand, Singapore, and Japan accept emergency passports. Each of these countries has its own charm, from the bustling streets of Bangkok to the serene gardens of Kyoto.

Be mindful of their specific visa regulations, as Asia is a tapestry of diverse immigration policies.

How Emergency Passport Works

Let’s shift gears and talk about what an emergency passport really is and how it works.

Think of an emergency passport as a temporary solution, a bridge that gets you safely over the waters of passport mishaps to your desired destination.

What is an Emergency Passport?

What Emergency Passports Look Like

An emergency passport is a temporary document issued under urgent circumstances, like if your regular passport is lost, stolen, or severely damaged. It’s not as fancy or as thick as your regular passport, but it serves the same purpose: it identifies you and allows you to cross international borders.

How Do You Get One?

The process varies slightly from country to country, but the general steps are similar. First, you’ll need to visit your country’s embassy or consulate. It’s a good idea to call ahead or check their website for specific requirements. Typically, you’ll need to fill out an application form, provide identification (like a driver’s license or ID card), and show proof of your travel plans, like flight tickets. They might also ask for a police report if your passport was stolen.

What to Expect

Here’s the real talk: getting an emergency passport can be a bit of a wait, sometimes a few hours, sometimes a day or two. The embassy staff work as fast as they can, but it’s not instant. The passport you get will look different from your regular one – fewer pages and a shorter validity period, usually just enough to cover your trip and get you back home.

Using Your Emergency Passport

Once you have your emergency passport in hand, you can use it to travel to countries that accept them (as we discussed earlier). But remember, this is a temporary document. When you get back home, you’ll need to apply for a regular passport.

Tips for Traveling with an Emergency Passport

Now, let’s talk about some practical tips. Always carry additional identification and travel documents. This could include a driver’s license or a copy of your birth certificate. It’s also wise to keep digital copies of all your documents in a secure online storage.

Before traveling, contact the embassies or consulates of your destination countries to confirm their current policies on emergency passports. Policies can change, and the last thing you want is an unexpected hurdle.

Lastly, remember that an emergency passport is typically valid for a shorter period than a regular passport. Ensure that its validity covers the duration of your trip and any potential unforeseen delays.

In conclusion, many countries around the world accept emergency passports, but the key is to be well-informed and prepared. Each country has its own set of rules and requirements, and staying updated on these is crucial for a hassle-free travel experience.

As someone who loves to explore, I understand the importance of having reliable information at your fingertips. Hopefully, this guide eases your concerns and helps you in planning your travels, even in the most unexpected situations. Safe travels!

What Should I Do if I Lose My Passport While Traveling?

You will have to replace the passport before returning to the United States. Contact the nearest  U.S. embassy or consulate  for assistance. Contact information for U.S. embassies and consulates is also available in our  country information  pages. Ask to speak to the Consular Section to report your passport lost or stolen.

You will have to appear in person at the U.S. embassy or consulate to apply for a new passport. If you are scheduled to leave the foreign country soon, please provide consular staff with the details of your travel. We will make every effort to assist you quickly. If there is not enough time to get you a regular passport, the Consular Section may be able to give you a limited-validity emergency passport, which may be valid for up to one year.

If a loved one tells you their U.S. passport was lost or stolen overseas, you can call the Office of Overseas Citizens Services at 1-888-407-4747. They will be able to help you put your loved one in touch with the closest U.S. embassy or consulate.

What Do I Need to Replace my Passport Overseas?

Please bring with you to the embassy/consulate:

  • One  passport photo  (get it in advance to speed the process of replacing your passport)
  • Identification (driver's license, expired passport, etc.)
  • Evidence of U.S. citizenship (birth certificate, photocopy of your missing passport)
  • Travel Itinerary (airline/train tickets)
  • DS-11 Application for Passport
  • DS-64 Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport

Even if you cannot present all of these documents, consular staff will do their best to help you. They will help you get a new passport quickly.

Police Report:

A police report is  not  mandatory but can help confirm the circumstances of the loss or theft. If you lose your U.S. passport, we recommend you tell local police. But you can skip the report if you are concerned about delaying your travel.

How Long is a Replacement Passport Valid?

Passports last ten years for adults, five for minors. Need a quick fix for urgent travel? Get a limited-validity emergency passport, which is valid for up to one year. You can exchange it for a full-validity one after your trip. You may also receive a limited passport if you have lost multiple passports or borrowed money from the State Department to fund your trip home. A consular officer can provide additional information.

Are Fees Charged to Replace Lost/Stolen Passports Abroad?

Replacement passports cost the same as any other passport. If you are unable to pay for a new passport, you can give the consular staff the names of people who might help. See our information about  Financial Assistance to U.S. citizens Abroad  and  Sending Money Overseas to U.S. Citizen in an Emergency.

If you have been a victim of a serious crime or disaster and cannot afford a new passport, you may be eligible for a free limited-validity emergency passport. If you want a full-validity passport, the regular fee applies for replacements.

Can the U.S. Embassy Issue a Replacement Passport on a Weekend or Holiday?

Most U.S. embassies and consulates cannot issue passports on weekends or holidays. All U.S. embassies and consulates have after-hours duty officers. They are available to assist with life-or-death emergencies of U.S. citizens abroad. Contact the nearest  U.S. embassy or consulate  after-hours duty officer for help. Do this if you have an emergency, need to travel, or have been the victim of a serious crime. In most cases, a replacement passport will be issued the next business day.

Can I travel if I find my passport after reporting it lost or stolen?

No. If you reported your passport lost or stolen, it is no longer valid for international travel. A foreign country may deny your entry if you try to use that passport. Or you might not be allowed to leave if you are already abroad. If you want to travel after reporting your passport lost or stolen, you need to apply for a new passport.

U.S. Travel Documents Requirements: Traveling to and from the USA

emergency travel document us passport

If you are planning a trip to or outside the U.S. , the first thing you need to make sure is that your travel documents are in order . A travel document is a form of identification issued by a government to ease the movement of individuals across international borders. Before you leave for the airport, you need to make sure that your travel document is valid , and that you have all the necessary extra documentation , including any required visas . There are different types of travel documents that are issued based on immigration status and purpose for the trip . U.S. law requires that every individual , regardless of citizenship, age or destination, needs to hold a valid travel document(s) to travel outside of the United States. Of course, the requirements for crossing international boundaries vary depending on the country of destination. It is paramount when traveling either domestically or internationally to make sure you have the necessary travel documents, required visas, for entering or departing the United States.

Main Travel Documents

It is important to keep in mind that the travel document requirements for traveling outside of the U.S. may not be the same required to enter another country. The main travel documents issued by the U.S. government are passports, U.S. permanent resident card (Green Card), R efugee or Stateless travel document , Re-Entry Permit , and emergency travel document issued by an embassy or consulate. But what are the differences between them?

The passport is perhaps the most common travel document there is. It is usually issued in a booklet format. It has a biometrics page with the holder’s information and also blank pages for entry and departure stamps and visas . It acts as a form of identification and proof of citizenship . Most countries require that a passport is valid for at least 6 months at the time of arrival.

The governmental entity responsible for issuing passports in the U.S. is the Department of State (DOS). U.S. passports act as proof of U.S. citizenship and allow their holder entry into a total of 156 countries visa-free.

Passport Cards

Both apassport and passport card are considered U.S. passports . They both serve as proof of your U.S. citizenship and identity. The passport card is a wallet-sized travel document that can only be used by U.S. citizens to re-enter the United States at land border-crossings or ports-of-entry by sea from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. This card is a smaller, more convenient, and less expensive alternative to the traditional passport, especially for those who frequently travel to these destinations. The passport card, like the passport book, is valid for 10 years for an adult, and five years for children age 16 and younger. If you already have a passport book, then you may apply for the passport card at a reduced price.

USA Travel Documents

Form i-94 and arrival/departure records.

Form I-94, Arrival-Departure Record , is used to record traveler's’ arrival/departure information to the United States . However, CBP now gathers this information automatically from their electronic travel records. All those arriving in the U.S. via air or sea are no longer required to complete Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record . However, if they need the information from their Form I-94 admission record to prove their legal-visitor status, they can access their arrival/departure record information online. Because CBP only collects this information automatically for air and sea travelers, CBP will still issue a paper form I-94 at land border ports of entry.

To travel to and enter the United States, travelers need a visa . The type of visa you will need to apply for depends on the reason for your visit. You can apply for a visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Your approved visa will be placed on directly in your passport . A visa usually comes in either a stamp or loose piece of paper format and shows the purpose of your trip as well as its validity. You cannot enter the U.S. after your visa’s expiration date. At the port of entry, the DHS officer will enter the date when you are required to leave the U.S in your I-94 form. You have an obligation to leave the United States by this date since it is when your immigration status expires, or face not being allowed to re.-enter the U.S. even if you have a valid travel document.

In addition to the traditional visas, the USCIS also issues three types of travel documents for exceptional circumstances. These special travel documents allow their holders to re-enter the U.S. country without having to apply for a visa. To apply for these travel documents, individuals need to complete and file Form I-131, Application for Travel Document and choose which document they want to apply for:

  • An advance parole document
  • A refugee travel document
  • A re-entry permit

All those who applied for asylum or were considered asylees on or after April 1, 1997, can lose their status should they return to the country for which they sought asylum.

Advance Parole

Individuals who are in the process of adjusting their status or applying for an immigrant visa (refugees and asylees) are required to apply for advance parole document. Failure to do so can lead to severe consequences upon returning and trying to enter the United States, as these individuals may be found inadmissible, their applications may be denied, or both. It is paramount for non-U.S. citizens to obtain the proper documentation before leaving the United States . However, there are three exceptions to the requirement for nonimmigrant visa holders to apply for advance parole: H1B, L and K3/4 holders as well as their dependents. Those who hold a K1/2 visa and who have married a U.S. citizen must apply for legal permanent resident (Green Card holder) status and advance parole before leaving the United States, by filing Form I-131.

Non-immigrant visa holders must obtain Advance Parole, before departure, to re-enter the United States if they have:

  • Filed an application for adjustment of status but have not received a decision from the USCIS;
  • Hold refugee or asylee status and intend to depart temporarily to apply for a U.S. immigrant visa in Canada; and/or
  • An emergency or personal reason to travel temporarily abroad.

Refugee Travel Documents

The USCIS grants refugee travel documents to i ndividuals with refugee or asylum status and to lawful permanent residents who obtained their Green Cards based on their refugee or asylee status. If you want to travel abroad, you will need a passport. A refugee travel document is the equivalent of a passport for asylees and refugees who need to travel outside the U.S. temporarily. Before traveling abroad , those who were granted asylum or refugee status must apply for a refugee travel document . Family members who are classified as derivative asylees or refugees must also apply and obtain a refugee travel document before traveling outside of the United States. Failing to get a refugee travel document before leaving the U.S. could have serious consequences like being denied re-entry into the U.S. or even being deported. It is also important to keep in mind that both asylees and refugees you should never travel to the country from which they claimed persecution.

Re-entry Permits

A reentry permit allows a permanent resident (Green Card holder) or conditional resident to apply for re-entry after having spent at least a year outside of the United States. Those who are granted a re-entry permit are not required to apply for a returning resident visa from a U.S. embassy or consulate.

If you are a U.S. lawful permanent resident (green card holder) , and you need to spend a year or more outside the United States, you are required to get a re-entry permit to maintain your status. While Green Card holders are allowed to travel, they cannot spend more than an allotted time outside the U.S. running the risk that immigration authorities may consider the act an intent to abandon U.S. residence status . A re-entry permit helps prove that you did not mean to give up your status . A re-entry permit is also useful for when you cannot, or do not wish to, get a passport from your home country. The permit (which looks like a passport) can be used in its place. Remember that you cannot extend the time on your re-entry permit. If it expires, and you want to renew it, you will need to return to the U.S. and apply for a new one.

Emergency Travel

In the case of emergency, and before leaving the United States , the USCIS might process an application for a travel document faster . If you are experiencing an extremely urgent situation, you may visit your local office to request an emergency travel document. You will be required to submit any additional documentation required, including proof of your emergency situation , e.g.; medical documents, death certificates, travel records, etc. It is important to understand that business trips, weddings, holiday parties and other planned events are usually not considered emergency situations. USCIS considers emergency situations to be, life-threatening conditions, a humanitarian situation like a natural catastrophe. Your requested assistance to attend a cultural or social program which would benefit the United States, etc.

So if you are a foreign national planning a trip outside of the U.S., please make sure you have all the appropriate travel documents in order or risk losing their rights and benefits given to you by the U.S. government. Failing to do so may result in being found inadmissible upon your return, or your applications may be denied, or both. That is why it is paramount that the proper documentation is obtained before leaving the United States .

You lost your passport. Now what?

While just about every other document is accessible online, a lost passport is one of the last analog emergencies that can derail an international trip.

Here’s a guide to replacing a lost passport according to how fast you need it, how much money you have to spare and where you live. (The process for last-minute renewals of expired passports, by the way, is fairly similar.)

If you’ve got at least three weeks

You’ll be OK. On the State Department website, at travel.state.gov/passports, first report your passport lost and then follow the process for a replacement. On the website, you’ll find a list of 7,500 passport acceptance facilities — including post offices, public libraries and clerk of court offices — where you can make an appointment or, in most cases, come during scheduled walk-in hours. They’ll verify your documents and send them to the State Department, and you’ll get your passport in the mail.

Before the day of your appointment, check what you need to bring, a list that will include at least proof of U.S. citizenship, payment (acceptable forms vary by facility), the right forms (for lost passports, that’s the DS-11 and DS-64) and at most facilities, a properly taken photo.

The “routine” processing time to replace a passport takes six to eight weeks and costs $165; choose the “expedited” service, for an additional $60, to receive your passport in two to three weeks.

You might even get yours “faster than advertised,” said Matt Pierce, a managing director of passport services for the State Department, noting that the pandemic-era backlog was cleared up as of December.

Avoid delays by carefully following instructions, and consider spending an additional $19.53 for faster shipping.

When time is tighter

If your trip is less than three weeks away, you’ll need to take the extra step of going through one of 26 passport processing offices across the United States. If you’re doing it without an outside expediter, you must make an appointment online or over the phone, up to 14 days in advance of your trip.

There are no more walk-ins, an option before the pandemic, but the State Department has increased capacity to eliminate the need for them, Pierce said, and the offices give special priority to documented “life-or-death emergencies” of immediate family members. You’ll need to bring all of your documents, and proof you are traveling soon — like a plane or cruise reservation.

Things can get dicey if you need an appointment in the next day or two. In such cases you can call for an appointment, or contact your local member of Congress.

Laurie Lee, CEO of Chicago-based Swift Passport and Visa Services, an expediter, has seen cases where clients on the verge of missing a wedding or another once-in-a-lifetime event spend hours refreshing the site to find a last-minute appointment, and even end up booking flights across the country if they can find an opening. That, of course, costs both time and money.

At the passport office, the process will be similar, except that you’ll likely be able to pick up your passport later in the day. In most cases, said Pierce, you won’t have to return the next day, but it can happen. (You can also have your passport mailed to you, if you have time.)

Using an expediter

If you have at least three business days and are willing to spend hundreds of dollars for help, consider Swift or one of the other 200-plus agencies registered with the State Department as couriers, or expediters.

Expediters are especially helpful for people who live far from the nearest passport office and cannot or do not want to drive or fly there. But they can also benefit anyone having trouble getting a timely appointment, because they have reserved slots that allow them to bring a client application directly to certain passport offices. Swift, for example, can bring 10 applications a day to the Boston office, and five to the Chicago one. Depending on urgency, Swift’s assistance costs between $155 and $599.

To work with an expediter, you will still need to go to your local passport acceptance facility, like a post office, where workers verify and seal your documents in an envelope, which you then send (or hand-deliver) to the expediter. They’ll take care of the rest, and get your new passport back to you.

What can go wrong

If you’re traveling to a passport agency, leave plenty of time to get there. Screwing up something on the form can also lead to delays that can cost you your trip.

“Common errors include signing in the wrong place, not putting the date on their application, having an incorrectly sized passport photo or not being framed correctly in the photo,” said Steve Diehl, chief corporate development officer of CIBTvisas, a large expediter.

Once you get it

When your passport arrives, make digital and paper copies. Change your number on trusted traveler programs like Global Entry, and remember that if your old passport had a visa in it for the country you’re headed to, you’ll also need to rush a replacement of that.

If you do find your old passport later, keep it as a souvenir: It is no longer valid.

If you lose it while abroad

First of all, try not to. Unless you are traveling in a country that strictly requires you to have your passport on your person at all times, stow it in a hotel safe and carry around a photocopy, plus your driver’s license.

But if you do lose the passport or have it stolen, report it online to protect yourself from identity theft and then contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for an emergency appointment. You’ll need that paper or a digital copy of your passport, plus similar documents to what you would need for a replacement in the United States. You may receive either an actual replacement passport or an emergency version, usually good for one year.

Preventive measures

Several expediters advised that many of their clients misplaced their passports during recent moves, so when you pack up your home, be sure to remember where your passport is packed.

Oh, and before you give up on that lost passport, check your home copier or scanner. “I can’t tell you how often people find it in their copy machine,” Lee said.
