If you want to save on travel insurance without sacrificing benefits, Ergo's plans will be a great fit thanks to its competitive pricing and wide array of benefits. Furthermore, its inclusion of benefits that are typically provided only at an extra cost, including golf, sports equipment and pet hotel coverage, can appeal to a variety of travellers. However, its benefits are not the highest, so individuals who are looking to protect very expensive trips or are going to countries with very expensive healthcare may fare better with other plans.

Ergo's TravelProtect plans are affordable for most destinations, but may be the most enticing to the budget ASEAN traveller. There are 3 plans to choose from: Essential, Standard and Deluxe, which offer coverage for annual and single-trip plans for individuals or families. Ergo will be affordable for most travellers as it costs between 20-40% below average regardless of destination. While it is priced for the budget traveller, Ergo offers a wide range of benefits that can be useful for a myriad of travellers. For instance, if you do a lot of activities and require ports equipment during your trip, you'll benefit from Ergo's S$2,000 of sports equipment and adventurous activity coverage. Are you travelling while pregnant? Ergo also offers coverage for certain pregnancy illnesses.

Ergo does have some drawbacks. Although Ergo offers enough medical coverage to cover most medical emergencies, it may not entice customers who are looking for plans that max out medical benefits. Furthermore, while the inclusion of sports equipment coverage for free is something rarely seen in travel insurance plans, the single item limits may not be high enough to cover expensive equipment like skis, ski boots or expensive scuba diving gear. Lastly, travellers looking for a high value premium plan may be disappointed with Ergo's premium Deluxe plan, as its benefits are well below industry average for top-tier plans.

Notable Exclusions

Ergo's exclusions are standard with no cover for pre-existing conditions (unless you are claiming under repatriation of mortal remains or funerary expenses), extreme sports (potholing, racing, yachting), suicide or mental disorders, and you can not claim for expenses that you filed for with other insurers. Below, you'll find a summary of some notable exclusions.

Ergo TravelProtect Essential Plan

Ergo's Essential plan has below average prices for all destinations and it is currently the cheapest plan on the market for Annual ASEAN coverage. Overall, its premiums cost between 20-40% below the industry average for basic plans and will be a great fit for budget travellers who are active on their vacations. This is because it offers full coverage for adventurous activities and for your sports equipment, as well as unlimited emergency evacuation. It offers a wide array of trip inconvenience coverage that can benefit travellers who are nervous about missing connections or getting kicked off an overbooked flight.

While most benefits have above average limits compared to other basic plans, there are some benefits that fall below average. For instance, Ergo may not be the best fit for travellers who prioritise medical coverage over trip inconvenience coverage, as its limit is just under the industry average. Furthermore, its trip postponement benefit is also below average, so travellers concerned about this benefit may find insurers like DirectAsia to offer more in that arena. Lastly, pet owners should note that Ergo doesn't offer their pet care benefit for the Essential plan, so those worried about paying for pet care in case of delays may have to pay more for one of Ergo's other plans. Regardless of Ergo Essential's drawbacks, travellers who are looking to save on regional travel coverage may find Ergo to offer more than enough benefits for very attractive prices.

Travellers looking for a middle ground of coverage and price will find Ergo to provide just that: Its Standard plan premiums are priced below average for both single and annual trips, while most benefits limits are above average. In particular, Ergo is most competitively priced for travellers looking for coverage for long trips (2+ weeks). Unlike annual and 1-week coverage plans which cost 15-46% below average, 2-week trip coverage costs between 33-51% below average. Due to this, Ergo's Standard plan offers considerably better value for longer and annual trips as opposed to week-long trips. Most of the coverage is either above average or average and there is a wide array of benefits including misconnection, delay, overbooking, sports and car rental excess coverage that will appeal to a wide variety of travellers. However, Ergo Standard does fall short when it comes to trip inconvenience coverage, particularly trip delay, travel postponement and replacement traveller benefits. Thus, if you booked a trip with costly date change fees, you may fare better with other insurers.

Ergo's Deluxe plan will once again be appealing to value-optimising travellers, although it may fail to please travellers who are looking for very high coverage plans. On nearly all fronts, its coverage limits fall below the average of other premium tier plans, so customers hoping to maximise their benefits with Ergo will be disappointed. For instance, its medical and personal accident coverage falls right below average and its trip inconvenience coverage, especially trip postponement and trip delay coverage is 30-60% below average for premium travel insurance plans. However, like Ergo's other plans, consumers will win out with its price—regardless of destination and trip length, Ergo Deluxe costs 25-40% below the average of top-tier plans. Based on this, we believe that consumers who will benefit most from Ergo Deluxe are consumers who are adventurous but cost-conscious travellers who care about have a little bit of coverage for everything, rather than high coverage in a particular area (i.e. high medical or high trip inconvenience).

Sports Coverage

Ergo offers full adventure activity cover, which covers you for accidents while bungee jumping, skydiving, paragliding, hot air ballooning, jet skiing, mountaineering under 3,000 metres, skiing and snowboarding and canoeing/white water rafting (up to level 3 rapids). However, you will not be covered for expeditions, mountaineering, professional sports, racing, motorsports and any underwater activities besides scuba diving. Loaned and owned sports equipment is covered up to S$2,000, with a S$500 per item limit. Ergo also offers golf coverage, which includes equipment, unused green fees and hole-in-one, which makes it a good budget insurer for golfers.

You can submit your claims online along with a copy of your passport and travel documents, original medical bills and receipts and other relevant medical or accident-related documents. Additionally, you can submit your claims by mail or in person. Ergo's claims page has a thorough list of all the documents you need depending on what type of claim you need to file, as well their claims procedure and claim form.

ERGO TravelProtect is very good for Malaysia and covers overseas medical expenses but the premium is refundable for the Annual Multi-Trip Plan, but not for the Per Trip Plan unfortunately. If you. But in the event that you need to extend your policy but unable to, they will extend your policy for up to 72 hours after the planned expiry date and will not charge you for it. Such circumstances include natural disasters, epidemics, pandemics, and civil unrest, airport and airspace closures.
