Video: Go Time – Clapped Out Excursion vs Suburban vs Escalade Overland Torture Fest: Part 1!

It’s finally time to take our three old overland SUVs on a torturous trip from Boulder, Colorado to Moab, Utah. It’s our “Go Big!” video series finale (part 1). In this episode, we drive our big machines over 350 miles to get to the White Rim Trail in Utah. We want to see if our Ford Excursion, GMC Suburban, and Cadillac Escalade can survive the long and mountainous journey. We also want to see exactly how inefficient or efficient these beasts are in the real life.

Surprisingly, all three of our SUVs made it over the Rocky Mountain continental divide, Vail Pass, and many more high-altitude highways to get us to Utah. In the end, this is the real-world fuel economy that we saw.

The Chevrolet Suburban and Ford Expedition represent the two largest and bestselling full-size SUVs on the market. They promise to do it all, haul the family and friends, tow the toys, trudge over the river and through the woods to all of that. The spacious three-row SUVs range from utilitarian workhorses to luxury land barges. 

The 2024 Ford Expedition starts cheaper than the 2024 Chevrolet Suburban , but the Suburban is so big as to outsize some suburban garages. Chevy’s in-car technology advances over Ford’s, but Ford uses twin-turbo V-6 engines with more power and better efficiency than Chevy’s V-8 lineup. Both push price tags beyond $90,000.

The Suburban is 15 inches longer (3.8 inches longer than Expedition Max), with a wheelbase more than a foot longer

The Suburban has 23.2 cubic feet more cargo volume than Expedition Max with rows two and three folded flat

Both vehicles come with a bench seat that fits three smaller passengers or two adults in the third row, and an eight-seat configuration with a second-row bench or a seven-seat configuration with captain’s chairs in the second row. The Suburban is larger and roomier, and has another trick up its spacious sleeve: on base LS models, owners can opt to turn the front bucket seats into a 40/20/40-split bench seat for $250. That brings the total passenger capacity to nine people, but it’s mostly a marketing point more than a functional preference selected by shoppers. Still, options are good. 

That’s why Ford offers a stretched version known as the Expedition Max for an extra $3,000 on most entry- and mid-grade trims. The Max expands the cargo room in the Expedition, but does not alter the passenger space.

The numbers don’t lie: The larger Suburban has more width, depth, and length to haul passengers and the gear for youth travel sports, or for long weekends to the lake house, as well as for small business owners and livery purposes. 

It should be no surprise that passenger space favors the Suburban, even above the Expedition Max. The narrow third row of the Expedition can’t fit two adults for more than a quick, inconvenient ride, while the Suburban could, even if it’s a little trickier getting in back. The Suburban has more second-row slide to make it more flexible for both rows of passengers. Here’s a look at the comparative legroom in rows two and three.

Both SUVs come well-equipped with cloth seats, power doors and locks, and smartphone compatibility, but they stick their polished noses into the luxury realm on the high end, with everything from massaging seats to adaptive suspensions. The biggest price driver is engine choice, however, and four-wheel drive adds at least $3,000 on both SUVs. At prices that flirt with $100,000, why not consider their actual luxury counterparts in the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade ?

The Suburban comes with more intuitive in-car tech that includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a satellite radio trial, a wifi hotspot, keyless start, as well as comforts such as power front seats. The Suburban LT hits the sweet spot for about $65,000. March through the RST, Premier, and Z71 trims to get to the most expensive Suburban High Country, and you’ll pay about $90,000 with a few options.

With a base price of about $57,000, the Expedition XL STX undercuts the Suburban, but you’ll need to step up to the XLT for $4,000 more to get a third row. Both the XL and XLT come with a large 12.0-inch touchscreen and cloth seats, but we recommend the XLT with the $3,795 High package for about $65,000. It adds synthetic leather upholstery, keyless start, power-adjustable front seats with driver-side memory, and a power tailgate. For more than $70,000 the Limited trim tempts with leather upholstery, adaptive cruise control, and a sunroof. Timberline and King Ranch models cede the highest ground to the Platinum.   

Winner: Draw; it really depends on the powertrain.

Are the Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Suburban 4WD?

Rear-wheel drive is standard, though most models can be had with four-wheel drive. Both models have a 2-speed transfer case with a Low gear that provides a lot more torque at low speeds to traverse muck or snow. Suburban Z71 models have 4WD standard and include a limited-slip rear differential, knobby off-road tires, and skid plates to beat the bush away from the pavement. The Ford Expedition Timberline edition has similar features including an inside rear wheel lock that trims the turning radius. In either case, these large vehicles must overcome size and weight as much as the terrain.

The Suburban’s V-8s have evolved from the past and now pair with a twitchy 10-speed that makes it plenty quiet and plenty quick given its size. The base 5.3-liter V-8 gets the job done for most needs, but for owners who tow and log lots of highway miles, the 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-6 has better fuel economy and towing capacity. The top dog earns his pay with impressive acceleration and a 6.2-liter V-8 that can go from thrum to stun in a beat.  

An independent suspension with available adaptive damping belies the cinder block projections of the Suburban. It rides and handles more like a crossover SUV than a body-on-frame truck, and the towing capacity exceeds 8,000 pounds. 

How does the Ford Expedition perform?

Base twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 makes 380 hp, 470 lb-ft; tows up to 9,300 pounds (RWD)

Limited, King Ranch, Platinum V-6 makes 400 hp, 480 lb-ft

Optional high output version in Timberline, Stealth makes 440 hp, 510 lb-ft

Expedition Max tow rating is 9,200 pounds in RWD and 4WD

The Expedition feels lighter on its available 22-inch wheels than the Suburban, and with the high output version of the V-6, Ford says it can go from 0-60 mph in about five seconds. That’s impressive for a 5,500-pound brick. Like the Suburban, the 10-speed automatic can be indecisive in lower gears, but it’ll jump down a gear or three for passing moves when cruising. It too has an independent suspension with available adaptive damping and an overall soft ride for a vehicle using a truck platform. 

Winner: Expedition.

Ford has all but ditched the V-8, except for the Mustang and one F-150 option. Instead, it relies on a twin-turbo V-6 to increase fuel economy to 19 mpg combined while also improving output. 

GM adds cylinder deactivation to its V-8s that can cut off fuel to all but two cylinders when cruising to conserve fuel. The 6.2-liter V-8 has an EPA rating of 16 mpg in any configuration, which is the same as the 5.3-liter with 4WD. The extra grunt for no real fuel economy penalty makes it even more appealing, but it also costs anywhere from $2,500 to $8,600 more, depending on the trim. The turbodiesel is ideal for drivers who log mostly highway miles, and Chevy has priced it to sell it, with an upcharge of only $900 to $1,500 over the base V-8. If only diesel were the same price as gas, it’d take less than two years for the fuel savings to offset the upcharge.

Is the Ford Expedition a good-looking SUV?

The Expedition blends in more than the Suburban, beside different grilles and wheel sizes ranging from 17-22 inches. The trims offer different personalities, with a chrome bedazzled Limited, a rugged Timberline with off-road upgrades, a western-themed King Ranch, and a ritzy Platinum. Dress the inside up however you like, the Expedition could be mistaken for an F-150 inside, replete with a dual glovebox. A standard 12.0-inch touchscreen centers the dash, flanked by blocky vents and underlined by traditional climate dials and knobs. 

Is the Chevrolet Suburban a good-looking vehicle?

The Suburban fits like a sport jacket on a body builder: it bulges in most places. It borrows the steep, flat brow of the Silverado, and blacked-out RST and high-riding ZL1 specs give it some added character. The interior is less in your face, but its pushbutton shifter mounted on the dash feels too diminutive for this sized vehicle. With its sole glove box, it’s a little more orderly and calmer than the Expedition. The related GMC Yukon XL has an even dressier black-on-black interior. 

Winner: Beauty is in the eye of the big loaders.

The Suburban and Expedition both carry standard automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and automatic high beams. Ford adds blind-spot monitors as standard. It has another key advantage: a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA. The Suburban has only four stars due to an increased risk of rollover crashes. 

The Suburban gets one back for its superior hands-free driving system, Super Cruise. It enables hands-free driving on more than 400,000 miles of limited access highways in North America, and it can automatically lane change around slower vehicles. Ford’s BlueCruise is capable, but less sophisticated.

Either large SUV remains a strong choice for any driver that needs lots of passenger and cargo space and lots of tow capacity. Bigger and bolder, the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban earns a TCC Rating of 6.2 out of 10 , but its safety rating is the big thing holding it down from the 2023 Ford Expedition’s TCC Rating of 6.7 out of 10 . 2025 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban Preview: New tech makes a great interior even greater

Visual tweaks outside, blazer ev tech inside, suspension and duramax updates elsewhere.

Pros:  Well-rounded; sophisticated magnetic and air suspension; state-of-the-art user-friendly tech; great Duramax diesel option

Cons:  less efficient and/or powerful base engine than rivals; flat seats.

Rivals may outdo them in certain areas, but when taken as a whole, it’s hard to argue that the updated 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe and its extended-length Chevrolet Suburban sibling won’t be the most well-rounded full-size SUVs. They look great, have luxurious interiors with great tech made even better for 2025, and offer massive space and solid towing . We also expect an even more pleasant and easy-to-drive demeanor thanks to ride/handling updates for 2025 (especially with the optional magnetic and/or air suspension options available on more trim levels). The unique Duramax diesel engine also gets an update, adding more power and torque to an engine that was already shockingly quiet and likely to save you big money at the pump. The looks were also updated for 2025, but as before, if they don’t quite tickle your fancy, you can always go down the road and pick up one of their GMC Yukon twins.

Now, as usual, we will point out that it’s important to consider whether you really need the added  towing  capacity and massive boxy cargo space of a full-size SUV (or the Suburban ’s more usable cargo space behind the third-row). Large  crossovers  like the  Kia Telluride  or Chevy’s own all-new Traverse  offer nearly as much interior space as the Tahoe but will be cheaper to fuel, provide better handling and maneuverability, and come with cheaper price tags.

To be clear, we have yet to drive or even experienced the 2025 Tahoe and Suburban . We’re therefore not sure how much improved (if at all) the driving experience is, but we’ve already tested and very much enjoyed the big-time changes to the interior features components in the Chevrolet Blazer EV . The infotainment system is exceptional, the all-digital instruments vibrant and the electronic column shifter a huge improvement over the old Tahoe/Suburban’s dopey push-pull button shifter. Frankly, the Tahoe and Suburban were awfully good before, so we don’t think you’ll be missing out on that much if you snag a 2024 instead of waiting for a 2025. Still, it sure seems improved nevertheless.

The current-generation Tahoe and Suburban undergo their first set of prominent updates since being completely redesigned for 2021. We noted some of those changes above, but a more complete rundown of what’s new can be found here in our 2025 Tahoe and Suburban reveal .

What are the Tahoe/Suburban interior and in-car technology like?

We’ll have to wait and see if the revised 2025 Tahoe and Suburban maintain the very high build quality standards set by the original design, but it’s hard to imagine things going backward in that regard. The range-topping High Country shown above sure seems just as plush as the 2024 Suburban we recently experienced, but with real wood present for the first time.

While the Tahoe/Suburban maintains the boombox-worth of vehicle control buttons on the left side of the wheel (lights, 4WD system, trailer controls, etc), the buttons on the center console have been significantly reduced. There are still physical climate controls, but their number has been paired down with some functions migrating up to the touchscreen where they remain permanently docked on-screen.

The screen itself blows up from a perfectly large 10.2 inches to a gargantuan 17.7-inch unit that fills out to its housing’s edges rather than being a simple rectangle. We’ve used this same system in the Blazer EV , and have found it refreshingly user-friendly for an all-new infotainment system. GM clearly kept the overall concept for things that worked (radio layout for instance), while usefully innovating in places such as the customizable row of quick-access menu icons at the top of the screen. We expect the new digital instrument panel to be vibrant and legible as well.

How big is the Tahoe and Suburban?

This is one area that won’t change with the updated model, as Chevy did all the heavy lifting with the full model redesign four years ago. The addition of an independent rear suspension finally yielded a proper, fold-flat third row that was actually habitable by adults. Moreover, it’s genuinely spacious and comfortable for adults, plus big kids and teens. Now, the end result is the Tahoe and Suburban aren’t quite  as large as their Ford and  Jeep  competitors, but the difference is so small and the space ultimately so vast that it doesn’t matter. We dive deeper into the Tahoe's  newer, larger rear passenger area here .

Behind the third-row seats, the Tahoe has 25.5 cubic feet of space. That's theoretically about a 6-cubic-foot advantage over  the Expedition  on paper, but  in real-world testing , we found the actual difference to be negligible.  The Jeep Wagoneer , meanwhile, has appreciably more than both. Still, it's a genuinely large space for a three-row vehicle. Of course, if you plan to routinely travel with all three rows filled, opting for the Suburban and its added cargo space is a good idea. Its cargo space behind the third row swells to 41.5 cubic feet, and you can see the difference in our Suburban luggage test . Frankly, given the modest price difference between Tahoe and Suburban, if your driveway or garage can swallow it, why not get the one even better suited to carry three rows of people and their stuff?

What are the Tahoe and Suburban fuel economy and performance specs?

The 2025 Tahoe and Suburban have three engines to pick from. The base engine is a naturally aspirated 5.3-liter V8 making 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It’s coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission and available with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. Fuel economy estimates were not available at the time of this writing, but we would expect them to be similar to the 2024 Tahoe/Suburban’s 16 or 17 mpg combined.

Available on the Z71, RST and Premier and standard on the High Country is a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8. It makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Like the 5.3-liter engine, it comes with a 10-speed automatic and either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. EPA estimates were not available, but we anticipate it should be comparable to before: City and highway fuel economy  differ somewhat by drivetrain, trim level and Tahoe or Suburban, but 16 mpg combined was common throughout.

A unique offering for the GM full-size SUVs is the diesel 3.0-liter inline-six. It’s the only engine like it in the class. It makes 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque and will also get the 10-speed automatic. We would except fuel economy to still obliterate the gas engines, with 22-24 mpg combined possible. Local diesel prices will greatly determine how much you’ll save at the pump with this engine, but the gigantic fuel economy advantage should still come out in the Duramax’s favor, especially if you’re comparing diesel to the 6.2.

Towing capacities are between 7,500 and 8,000 pounds depending on body style, engine and drivetrain. The diesel is the best choice, but only slightly. A tow package increases capacity across the board and actually results in the 5.3-liter being slightly better, but again, the difference is small.

What are the Tahoe and Suburban like to drive?

We have yet to drive the 2025 Tahoe and Suburban. Chevrolet says that it made updates to the independent rear suspension to further refine the Tahoe/Suburban’s ride and handling dynamics. Chevy promises they’ll “feel much nimbler than their full-size dimensions” suggest. There’s admittedly a lot of wiggle room with that claim.

Ultimately, though, even if they drove exactly the same as before, they’d be in a good spot. There are uniquely still four suspension offerings are available: a fixed steel spring and shock system; an air suspension; a steel spring suspension with magnetic dampers; air suspension with magnetic dampers. We haven't sampled the base system, but we would nevertheless continue to suggest a Tahoe or Suburban with the magnetic dampers that go unchanged for 2025. They provide a glassy smooth ride, limited body roll, and its controlled enough to eliminate nearly all the shimmies and shudders that crop up in large, body-on-frame vehicles. It’s really quite impressive in that regard, and again, Chevy apparently made it even better for 2025. The surprisingly good steering should be just as surprisingly good, too.

Now, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that the Tahoe and the Suburban, to an even greater extent, are enormous pains to park and there’s no update that’ll change that. This obviously depends on your local parking spot size situation, but keep that in mind should you be weighing a big crossover versus these behemoths.

In terms of engine choice, the carryover 5.3-liter V8 provides perfectly adequate acceleration, but it's no match for the Ford Expedition's silky smooth and far more powerful turbo V6. The 6.2-liter is a much better contender and does liven things up a bit, though we still wouldn’t call it fast. Ultimately, we think the Duramax diesel is the best choice, especially as it’s more powerful and even tops the 6.2-liter’s torque for 2025. We expect it to be just as shockingly quiet, both inside and outside, lacking the expected, obnoxious diesel clatter.

What are the Tahoe/Suburban safety ratings and driver assistance features?

The Tahoe and Suburban come standard with automatic emergency  braking  with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, automatic high-beam headlights and a rear seat reminder. Optional safety features that come standard on some higher trim models include reverse automatic emergency  braking , blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. GM’s excellent Super Cruise hands-free highway driving system can replace adaptive cruise control as an option on the Premier and High Country.

The 2024 Tahoe and Suburban received four out of five stars for overall crash protection from the  NHTSA , including a four-star frontal rating, five-star side rating and three-star rollover rating. We doubt this would change for the 2025 model year. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not tested the current-generation Tahoe/Suburban.

80 series LC vs Suburban

I've got a totally stock 1996 LC with 135000 on the clock. It needs some repairs, but overall in good shape. I;ve thoughtt about selling it and getting a Suburan 4X4 as I don't do any thing past dirt roads. It's a tough decision and I'm not sure what to do. I've never owned a Suburban  

Being a square body Suburban owner myself my answer is a bit biased. The pros for owning one far out ways the cons.

I bought a suburban last year, it's my favorite car I've ever had. I don't do anything outside of fire roads, but it's handles snow, rain, heat, etc. Fuel pump is probably the most expensive repair, but parts are everywhere. I just bought new brake pads and rotors for the front for under $120. Could have gone cheaper, went middle of the road. Very comfortable for longer trips. Mine is a 2001 with 175k. Precious owners kept it very clean and I would take it anywhere with no worries. I was looking at a 1997 landcruiser in the same price range, but needed a new head gasket, front axles were weeping grease, to me it was a no brainier to go with the suburban. I have 3 boys, so we fill the suburban no problem, the landcruiser would have been too small. I believe my suburban gets a little better gas mileage too. I'm averaging about 15 mpg. I've had a 1986 Toyota truck and a Tacoma, I would love a landcruiser, but for now, the suburban was the best call. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Suburbans are great vehicles. I had an 02 and loved it. never had a land cruiser, but a sub will definitely give you a lot more room for stuff- with the third row up the trunk is probably about the same size as the cruiser with just two rows. Definitely capable in stock form to get you down any dirt roads. even the 5.3 will get you quite a bit more power than the cruiser, and probably better mpgs too. My 02 had the 5.3 and I got 17 on the hwy. From what I've read those cruisers get pretty abysmal mileage. That being said, I don't know how new of a sub you are looking for, but unless your LC needs a ton of work and you really need more space, I'd be hard pressed to swap one used vehicle for another. 130K on the LC is nothing, you should be able to double that at least. At least you know what your LC needs, a new to you sub definitely has an unknown factor your current vehicle doesn't.  

What are the reasons you are looking at the Sub beyond the fact you only do dirt roads... More room for the family? More room for gear? Less expensive maintenance? You do know the background of the LC which is a plus. In addition, finding them in good shape and without "bling" is getting harder. Get what fits what your needs and don't look back. Both are great vehicles and will serve you well. Don't have remorse just because it is a LC. There is an "image" attached to them because of their expedition history (and reliability vs. Rovers), but don't let that play into your decision if the vehicle itself doesn't suit your needs. Vehicle choice is only a means to adventure and exploration... it is a tool in the bag... The tool needs to fit the job.  

I picked up the LC as a result of doing much research on the off road abilties, however the reality turns out I need more room and not a solid front axel. The off road/adventure stuff is all new to me, and I'm still trying to figure out where I fit in. Carrying people, stuff and dogs turns out to be more of a requirement and the roominess of the suburban might be what I need. I'm not interested in anything new so I'll start researching the suburban threads for suggestions on what model year is best. Thanks for the persectives.  

I would say your budget would dictate what you end up with. I would go with one that has some records and is clean. 1987-1991 is considered the square body style. 1500 and 2500 4wd get the 5.7 V8. 1992-1995 can get the 350 or 454 engine, but went independent front suspension. 1996-1999 went to Vortec engines, more power, but intake gaskets are a long repair. 2000-2006? (Not quite sure) get the 5.3, 6.0 and 8.1. I was looking at the 1999, when the 2001 fell in my lap. 5.3 and 5.7 get similar mileage, from 15-17 seems to be normal. I've heard the 454 gets 10 mpg loaded it not. Similar for the 6.0 and 8.1. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk  

I would look for a 2000+. All of them have some great qualities, but you could pick one of those up for well under $10k. The older the truck, obviously the more the unknown. I'd specifically look for one with the Z71 package. That's what I had, and aside from looking spiffy, they had better wheels, a locking rear diff, I think a little stouter suspension, and a bigger roof rack with a really neat rolling load bar on the back. I'd look for a 5.3 as well. better mpgs and all the power you would need to haul anything including a decent size trailer.

I am huge LC fan and have a few of them. When we had our first child we started looking for something with more room. We first bought a mega cab dodge ram which we love. Then the second kid came along and with friends and car pooling we wanted a third row. I was actually going to get another 80 series but for the same money yoh can get a really nice suburban and they have way more room. Unless you want the offroad capabilities (and are going to use them) of the LC then you're probably way better off with a burb. I ended up with a diesel swapped one and the cost of ownership (ie: repair bills) is less than the LC and I was doing all the maintenance myself. I most definitely will own another LC, but for an outdoorsy family with lots of gear, nothing bwats the burb.

I'd say (having owned both) that they are fairly on par if you look square body (pre '90?). What the 80 gains in reliability the sub gains in simplicity and cost of parts. Fuel economy is going to be too close to call. If you need more room inside, the sub makes more sense.
