Why exodus travels is such a great tour operator (with only one flaw).

I have been fortunate enough to have travelled on more adventure tours with Exodus Travels than I remember. A quick count lists as my favourites the Amalfi Coast , Puglia , the Dolomites , the Ring of Kerry , Iceland (hking and Aurora ) and the Greek Islands .

There is a theme here - hiking in Europe and it is with active trips that Exodus made its name in Canada. It is on these trips that Exodus offers more inclusions and better hotels than many of their competitors. And with almost 300 active Europe adventures there is a lifetime of trips to choose from.

So why travel with Exodus?

Aside from the comfortable level of hotels, Exodus employs really good local tour leaders on their small-group adventure tours. On my last trip in Greece our guide had been working for Exodus for over two decades and it showed. It showed in his professionalism, in his knowledge, but most of all in the way he interacted with his guests. Not a single request was too much, he always accompanied us to dinner and he was fun to be with. Case in point the impromptu dance he engaged in with the owner of a local taverna in Paros.

Besides small-group tours Exodus also has an enormous line of self-guided holidays and their popularity really took off during the pandemic. Fantastic route notes paired with maps help you find your way along some of the best hiking trails in Europe. Hotels used here are mostly 4-star and often wonderful meals are included. (On my own Dolomites trip I only managed to eat through all five courses once). And where needed, luggage is transferred for you between overnight stops, so you only hike with a daypack.

Well-researched itineraries are a hallmark of Exodus Travels adventure tours, although one could argue that of late they are sticking with the tried and true. But if you are looking for a good holiday exploring the highlights of a destination, then both in and outside of Europe Exodus has hundreds of holidays for you: from cultural and wildlife trips in Asia to discovery and hiking trips in Latin America to explorations and wildlife trips in Africa and the Middle East.

If I had to name one flaw Exodus has, it is perhaps the fact they are late to the table with a comprehenvie sustainability effort. Whereas other tour operators are operating carbon-neutral tours, Exodus has only committed to a 50% reduction by 2030. However, they do run many projects to help local communities and we applaud their latest addition, rewilding 100 square metre per passenger in Italy , which is not unlike our own 1% for the future challenge . But they are coming to the table, which is commendable for any company.

Excellent communication throughout from…

Excellent communication throughout from the company and we had a fabulous guide in Vanja Lovric, she totally made the trip fabulous. Not cheap but sometimes you get what you pay for, and this was a great holiday. 17 in our group and thankfully everyone was lovely and we all got on well. Our first Exodus holiday, it won't be our last. My hint ... Look to see if you can book the flights yourselves - we saved half the flight cost doing so.

We do appreciate that on occasion booking flights independently can be cheaper for our customers, but would mention that by booking flights with Exodus you have protection in the case of delays or cancellations. Should our flight-inclusive customers be delayed in joining the trip, Exodus cover additional necessary travel costs, for example.

Disappointed

I was extremely disappointed that Exodus are apparently unable to arrange flights from start points other than the UK. Given that, I was then not even offered the opportunity to join the group flight back to the UK.

Rodopi Mountains walk

Excellent services from booking to the holiday. The Leader, Julian was very knowledge about bears, wildflowers & birds. He was attentive and his knowledge made this holiday one I will never forget. The team at the hotel were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble.

Highly recommended!

A fantastic trip to Jordan on the eight day Premium Tour. Ayyad is an excellent tour guide, so enthusiatic about Jordan and so knowledgable about the history and culture. I booked last minute and the team in the office (Dezlin and Willicia) were so helpful in getting everything arranged for me. From my arrival in Amman to my transfer back to the airport at the end of my trip, everything was smooth and efficient. The trip itself was amazing. So many highlights: floating in the Dead Sea, traditional Bedouin tea at sunset in the Wadi Rum desert, climbing the 650 steps to the High Place of Sacrifice, the first glimpse of The Treasury as you come through the Siq, and not to forget every delicicious meal! If you are thinking about booking this trip, it is definitely worth it.

Excellent walking holiday on the Amalfi coast

Excellent walking holiday from Bomerano with Exodus, Great guide leading us on walks to Amalfi, Positano and Ravello, including walking the Path of the Gods and a walk on Vesuvius and then a guided visit to Pompeii. Nice hotel and good food included in the trip. Very well organised.

Excellent trip all round

This was an extremely well-organised trip from start to finish. There was an excellent balance of culture and walking. The walks through vineyards, meadows and woods were very scenic with beautiful views across valleys and rivers to distant hills. Our group of 13 gelled well and were very supportive of each others. Our guide went above and beyond. He organised extra group dinners and was extremely helpful provided me with useful train and bus timetables to Venice on the free day. The trip to Venice with the back-street tour and the tour around the winery with talk and Prosecco tasting were particularly memorable.

Enjoy Albania as it moves into the modern world

Albania was a country that we and our friends knew little about so this trip was an excellent opportunity to learn about a new country. As keen mountain walkers this was idea mixing the hills with other natural and cultural experiences. And we couldn’t have had a better introduction. The mountains were stunning, as good as if not better than the Dolomites and the culture ancient and fascinating. The guide could not have been better, he made sense of this former communist country rushing at break neck speed into the ‘west’. Exodus really know how to get the best guides! Enjoy Albania with all its quirks, steep hills, friendly folk and beauty. It’s stunning!

Excellently organised trip walking the Amalfi coast

Excellently organised trip. Paperwork included all info necessary and any email questions were promptly answered. Info about the trip content and difficulty was accurate - if the tour says you need a “reasonable degree of fitness” it does mean it! Some hikes were challenging but ok to do with regular water stops. The guide looked after the group well.

Unforgettable time!

Unforgettable time! I enjoyed the experience with wonderful scenery, and relaxing walks around glorious fields, and vineyards. The hotels are also very elegant with very good food and delicious wines and very friendly employees. Luis Coelho and Teresa, our guide for the trip, were very kind and made sure that we were all well. The group was also very friendly and fun, we shared and laughed a lot all the time. Very well organized from beginning to end.

Good customer service…

The lady I spoke to was very pleasant and understanding.I was a day or rwo late in making my final payment as I was away for the Bank Holiday week end.Had a question about arrival times mentioned in London and in Venice.I Was told the correct times will be given on the final flight details.

Good Organisation!

Exodus very good at organising and booking everything for the holiday. Can also phone them up and speak to someone if any queries etc to ask, which is good. Recommend them for booking a holiday.

What a wonderful time with lovely people in a beautiful country

I did the Porto to Lisbon Atlantic ride in early June. Our route took us through a variety of gorgeous landscapes – cliffs overlooking the ocean, small towns with roosters crowing, a medieval town encircled by fortified walls, beach towns painted bright colors, pine forests, sand dunes, and marshes. I believe there’s no better way to appreciate that kind of scenery than by traveling on a bike. We were a group of 16 guests – Americans, Britons, and Canadians – and three Portuguese guides. I traveled there alone and had a roommate assigned to me. She was lovely, and, really, all of us hit it off. I think this kind of trip attracts like-minded people, and the tour leader, Ruben, told us at our initial briefing in Porto that many of us would become friends. He was right. The first night, Ruben led us on a walking tour to a port tasting. Afterwards, the group split in half and went to two different restaurants Ruben had recommended. After that, most of us had our dinners together till the end of the bike tour. The food was always great, thanks to Ruben’s recommendations. He always sent us to places with excellent hospitality. All three of our guides were highly professional – well-prepared, helpful, supportive, friendly, accommodating, flexible, and organized. They kept us informed, entertained, hydrated, and roughly on-time. Every briefing was clear and succinct. We understood where we’d be riding the next day, what time we’d leave, and roughly what time we’d arrive at the next hotel. Ruben was a font of information about Portuguese history, culture, flora and fauna. He held forth on topics ranging from Portuguese royalty to the efforts of environmental activists following the devastating forest fires of 2017. Margarida was a strong cyclist and reliable sweeper, and clearly cared deeply that everyone had what they needed and enjoyed themselves. José drove the van with the bike trailer and reliably had our bags waiting for us in the lobby each time we arrived at a new destination. Every time we saw him he was smiling. They prepared healthy and delicious picnic lunches for us on a couple of occasions, and it was obvious they’d put a lot of thought into them. Anytime there was a problem, such as a mechanical issue, our guides were equipped to handle it. One day, during a coffee break in Nazaré – we had a coffee break most mornings, which I loved – I watched Ruben fix the electrical connection on another guest’s e-bike after they had taken a small spill. I have a bad knee, so I requested an e-bike from the start. A few others decided along the way to switch to one. When we started in Porto, there were four e-bikes out of 16. By the time we got to Óbidos, I think there were 10 e-bikes. Portugal A2Z, which is contracted by Exodus to run this tour, has its headquarters along the tour route, so I guess that made it easy for our guides to switch out the bikes overnight on request. Overall, this tour was everything I expected after reading the itinerary, trip notes, and reviews on the Exodus website. I found the price reasonable, the guides excellent, the scenery stunning, and the hotels clean and comfortable. I will always remember how much fun I had on this trip and the great people I met. I definitely plan to book with Exodus in the future.

Highly recommended - cycling in Transylvania with Exodus

This was my fifth cycling trip with Exodus and my second in Europe. From start to finish it was highly enjoyable. The group was like-minded and very sociable and our wonderful guides Cristina and Radu went out of their way to make the trip memorable. We stayed in a variety of interesting places, ate local food and enjoyed fantastic scenery (and weather, though maybe Exodus can't take credit for that). I would recommend this trip and any other with Exodus.

Walk the Prosecco Hills

This is a seven day group walking and wine tasting holiday. About 12 of us - mixed ages and abilities - but we all got on very well with each other. A good mix of activities - 4 organised walks (roughly 6-8 miles) completed at a leisurely pace and involving some hill climbing.There were some stunning views. Not too hot and plenty of shade(first week of June). Other organised activities included : a couple of wine tastings where we sampled 3 or 4 wines with the opportunity to buy bottle(s)), a particularly interesting visit to Venice where we explored the hidden parts of the city with the help of a very informative guide. Hotel accomdation was excellent - an expansive buffet breakfast and for other meals there were some good restaurants nearby. A group leader is provided by Exodus to organise everything and sort out any problems or issues etc. He was particularly good. There are several organised group meals - these highlight local produce and cooking methods. All were very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this holiday!

Transylvania, Romana Cycling Tour

We just got back from the Transylvania, Romania cycling tour and we cannot recommend it enough! The riding was varied and not overly difficult. We visited places, met people and experienced things that we could never have otherwise experienced. Our guides, Cristina and Radu were fantastic, their knowledge and passion for their country came through in everything they did. The two of them working together definitely made our trip great.

A wonderful first experience of the…

A wonderful first experience of the Camino. The walking was well paced and distances were well judged. Arrangements were smooth; accommodation and food were really good. The group spirit was tremendous - much of this was due to Raul our outstanding leader and guide.

Those on the group flights to London (additional cost) will be transferred to Tokyo Narita Airport in the evening, however, if you are not travelling on the group flight, you can take advantage of a free airport transfer by limousine bus to Narita or Haneda airport (only if staying at Hotel Metropolitan Ikebukuro). The first day of the tour generally starts from Noku Roxy Hotel (subject to change) in Kyoto and as the first day is just an arrivals day, you can arrive at any time. At approximately 5pm there is a Welcome Meeting which you can attend if you wish and you will meet your guide and fellow travellers.

A Vacation Excursion of a Lifetime (Hiking)

This is my first hiking experience that exodus trip plan and excellent organization of all team members made it a vacation excursion of a lifetime due to lots of things: Great, helpful, and very friendly leaders (Andrea & Pol); Beautiful & breathtaking Scenery; Lots of adventures in these majestic, paradise mountains (Dolomites). Kind, generous and caring group that I was so lucky to hike with all of them. They all provided me with tips and motivational words that made me achieve an outstanding result. Although, this was my first hiking excursion in high elevation that reached more that 2,500m.

Beautiful Romania - it's a good trip

A great trip that visits the quieter parts of rural Romania and 4 or 5 towns/cities. The Maramures area was a highlight and staying in rural guesthouses. Our guide, Radu, was excellent - he's one of the best guides we've ever had. I'd recommend the optional Bear Watching from a Bear Hide - we saw 9 bears, one up close (behind the window!)

Exodus provided excellent service…

Exodus provided excellent service before departure, coping happily with date changes, etc. There was nothing they could do about the crowds on the Amalfi coast itself, but our walks took us to uncrowded hills, through gorges and forests, with spectacular views. Best of all was our guide, Severio, who really made the trip special.

Our guide Severio really worked hard to make our Amalfi walking holiday special. Fantastic walks with insights as we went. Great group dynamics made the trip so enjoyable. 10 day trip to Norway Sweden and Finland

Went on the 10 day trip to Norway, Sweden and Finland. It was excellent as was our tour guide Nickolai. We needed plenty of stamina, but wonderful breakfasts at each hotel got us off to a great start each day. Some hotels were a bit basic but were very clean. We had some free time which was good but the rest of our trip was spent travelling by ferry and train with visits to fascinating islands and interesting cities.

Good communication and clear info when booking

Portugal Bike Tour

The bike trip from Porto to Lisbon was amazing. Fabulous tour in Puglia

Fabulous tour in Puglia, Italy. Great balance of the physical, cycling and swimming opportunities and the cultural. Getting to know something of the history of the region was very special, from the fairy-tale nature of Alberobello, the rustic splendour of Matera to the drama of Lecce and Gallipoli. The food, drink and were delicious. the people were great especially our guide, Manni.

Just finished the Dubrovnik and Dalmatian coast trip . Really good mix of culture and the chance for physical activity through island walking / sea swimming etc . Excellent Namibia Camping tour

My trip to Namibia on the camping tour was excellent. Good pre-tour communication and friendly staff when I called. The trip ran according to the itinerary which covered all of the main areas of the country at a comfortable pace. The guide was knowledgeable, great at spotting wildlife, organised and friendly. The tents were good, the sand dunes high and the wildlife fantastic.

The poorest of numerous Exodus cycling…

The poorest of numerous Exodus cycling holidays I’ve experienced. Despite a very good tour guide the holiday didn’t work. Poor hotels, absence of a second guide so poor supervision of back markers, planned itinerary resulted in very late arrival at hotels, not very interesting cycling. A promised half day on the final day didn’t happen as we were forced to take an earlier flight on the final day.

Depending on the road conditions at the time, we will either return over the Pang La or take a different cross-country road (sections of which are unsealed). The drive should take around 3 hours. Those on the flight inclusive package will depart this morning for the daytime flight to London; Land Only arrangements will finish after check-out from the hotel. **

Exodus started life on 4 February 1974 when two friends got together to provide an overland truck to travel to the Minaret of Jam, deep in the heart of the Hindu Kush, the most inaccessible of the world’s great monuments.

Accommodation

The cancellation policies of this trip when booked through Travelstride are determined by the stated policies of the tour operator - Exodus Travels.

If you or any other member of your party decides to cancel a confirmed booking you must notify Travelstride in writing. Your notice of cancellation will only take effect when it is received in writing by Travelstride and will be effective from the date on which we receive it.

If You Cancel Your Holiday You, or any member of your party, may cancel your travel arrangements at any time. Written notification from the lead name or your travel agent must be received at our offices. 

Since we incur costs in canceling your travel arrangements, you will have to pay cancellation charges as follows (see also the exceptions below): 

• More than 42 days - No cancellation fee. Deposit can be transferred to a new booking departing within 2 years of date of travel of original booking. Any remaining balance will be refundedThis excludes all non-refundable costs as set out in clause 4 above (for example international and domestic flights and local services).
• Between 41 and 21 days (inclusive) - No cancellation fee. Balance and deposit can be transferred to a new booking departing within 2 years of date of travel of original bookingThis excludes all non-refundable costs as further explained in clause 4 above (for example international and domestic flights and local services).
• Between 20 and 15 days (inclusive) - 80% of the holiday cost
• 14 days or less; or failure to join the holiday (inclusive) - 100% of the holiday cost

Certain trips may involve different cancellation charges; you will be advised if this is applicable to your holiday during the booking process.For Polar holidays, the following cancellation charges will be made for all Polar holidays. Period before departure in which you notify us: 

Cancelation charge

• More than 133 days - Deposit only
• 133 days or less (or failure to join the holiday) (inclusive) - 100% of the holiday cost

Notes (i) Your deposit is non-refundable, even if the cancellation charge calculated is lower than the deposit amount paid; (ii) If the reason for your cancellation is covered under the terms of your insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim these charges; (iii) certain travel arrangements may be subject to higher cancellation charges and could incur a cancellation charge of up to 100% of that part of the arrangements from the moment the booking is confirmed.

If You Change Your Booking

If, after our Booking Confirmation has been issued, you wish to change your travel arrangements in any way, for example your chosen departure date or accommodation, we will do our utmost to make these changes but it may not always be possible. Any request for changes to be made must be in writing from the lead name or your travel agent. You will be asked to pay an administration charge of $60, and any further cost we incur in making this alteration (including those charged by third party suppliers who provide the component parts of your booking).  You should be aware that these costs could increase the closer to the departure date that changes are made and you should contact us as soon as possible. Note: Certain travel arrangements may not be changeable after a reservation has been made and any alteration request could incur a cancellation charge of up to 100% of that part of the arrangements.

You can transfer your booking to another person, who satisfies all the conditions that apply to this booking, by giving us notice in writing at least 7 days before departure provided that the new lead passenger accepts the transfer and these Terms and Conditions. Both you and the new traveler are responsible for paying all costs we incur in making the transfer. Please bear in mind that certain airlines and other transport providers treat changes as a cancellation and charge accordingly, up to 100% of the cost for that part of the arrangement. Where applicable these charges will be passed on to you.

If We Cancel Your Booking

Exodus reserves the right to cancel an itinerary before departure for any reason whatsoever, including too few participants ,logistical problems, a Force Majeure Event (as defined in Section 8), or any other circumstances that may make operation of the trip inadvisable. All trip payments received will be promptly refunded, and this refund will be the limit of Exodus’s liability without any further obligation on Exodus’s part. Exodus is not responsible for any expenses incurred by trip members in preparing for the trip, including non-refundable or penalty-carrying airline tickets, special clothing, visa or passport fees, or other trip-related expenses.

If We Change Your Booking

Changes to the price. We can change your holiday price after you’ve booked, only in certain circumstances. Changes in the price of the carriage of passengers resulting from changes to the cost of fuel or other power sources, the level of taxes or fees imposed by third parties including tourist taxes, landing taxes or embarkation or disembarkation fees at ports and airports, or exchange rates mean that the price of your travel arrangements may change after you have booked.

Changes other than the price. It is a term of your booking that we are able to make changes to any aspect of your booking. If the change is insignificant, we will ensure that you are notified about it. Examples of insignificant changes include alteration of your accommodation to another of the same or higher standard. If we are forced by circumstances beyond our control to alter significantly any of the main characteristics of the travel services that make up your package you will have the rights set out below. 2.1 - We will contact you and you will have the choice of accepting the change or having a refund of all monies paid. You can also accept an alternative holiday, where we offer one (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value). We will tell you the procedure for making your choice. Please read any notification of changes carefully and respond promptly as if you do not respond to us within the timescale given your booking may be canceled. 2.2 - If you choose to accept a refund then that is the only liability we have and we will not be liable for any further sums, compensation or otherwise and you are advised to adequately insure yourselves against cancellation for any reason

Please note that insurance premiums and amendments charges are not refundable in any circumstances. 

Once you have put down a deposit for a tour, you are unable to cancel and re-book within a promotional period and we reserve the right to amend the pricing on any new booking you make within that time. If you cancel a tour and book the same tour under a promotional code, we reserve the right to decline the booking.

Important Note: Certain arrangements may not be amended after they have been confirmed and any alteration or cancellation could incur a cancellation charge of up to 100% of that part of the arrangements in addition to the charge above.

If the reason for your cancellation is covered under the terms of your insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim these charges.

Where possible, we will deduct the cancellation charge(s) from any monies you have already paid to us.

A Vacation Excursion of a Lifetime (Hiking)

This is my first hiking experience that exodus trip plan and excellent organization of all team members made it a vacation excursion of a lifetime due to lots of things: Great, helpful, and very friendly leaders (Andrea & Pol); Beautiful & breathtaking Scenery; Lots of adventures in these majestic, paradise mountains (Dolomites). Kind, generous and caring group that I was so lucky to hike with all of them. They all provided me with tips and motivational words that made me achieve an outstanding result. Although, this was my first hiking excursion in high elevation that reached more that 2,500m.

Beautiful Romania - it's a good trip

A great trip that visits the quieter parts of rural Romania and 4 or 5 towns/cities. The Maramures area was a highlight and staying in rural guesthouses. Our guide, Radu, was excellent - he's one of the best guides we've ever had. I'd recommend the optional Bear Watching from a Bear Hide - we saw 9 bears, one up close (behind the window!)

Exodus provided excellent service…

Exodus provided excellent service before departure, coping happily with date changes, etc. There was nothing they could do about the crowds on the Amalfi coast itself, but our walks took us to uncrowded hills, through gorges and forests, with spectacular views. Best of all was our guide, Severio, who really made the trip special.

10 day trip to Norway Sweden and Finland

Went on the 10 day trip to Norway, Sweden and Finland. It was excellent as was our tour guide Nickolai. We needed plenty of stamina, but wonderful breakfasts at each hotel got us off to a great start each day. Some hotels were a bit basic but were very clean. We had some free time which was good but the rest of our trip was spent travelling by ferry and train with visits to fascinating islands and interesting cities.

Good communication and clear info when booking

There was an unavoidable major itinerary change to a trip we booked (due to FCDO advice) which meant we wished to change our booking. Exodus were excellent in transferring our trip to an alternative one of our choosing. Easy to deal with and good communication throughout the booking process.

Portugal Bike Tour

The bike trip from Porto to Lisbon was amazing. The Exodus team took care of everything, making sure we had the right equipment, transported our luggage efficiently, and most important made sure we had a great trip. Our Exodus team (Ruben, Margarida and Jose) were outstanding, providing local knowledge and helping bring the group together. By the end, we were friends as well as travel companions. I highly recommend this tour.

Fabulous tour in Puglia

Fabulous tour in Puglia, Italy. Great balance of the physical, cycling and swimming opportunities and the cultural. Getting to know something of the history of the region was very special, from the fairy-tale nature of Alberobello, the rustic splendour of Matera to the drama of Lecce and Gallipoli. The food, drink and were delicious. the people were great especially our guide, Manni.

Just finished the Dubrovnik and…

Just finished the Dubrovnik and Dalmatian coast trip . Really good mix of culture and the chance for physical activity through island walking / sea swimming etc . Couldn’t fault the tour leader for organisation and enthusiasm- she really helped to make the trip . I would thoroughly recommend this trip

Excellent Namibia Camping tour

My trip to Namibia on the camping tour was excellent. Good pre-tour communication and friendly staff when I called. The trip ran according to the itinerary which covered all of the main areas of the country at a comfortable pace. The guide was knowledgeable, great at spotting wildlife, organised and friendly. The tents were good, the sand dunes high and the wildlife fantastic.

Cycling Porto to Lisbon

Just finished a cycling trip from Porto to Lisbon. The whole experience was wonderful with a great guide, excellent accommodation, high quality bikes and luckily perfect weather. It was my first Exodus trip and won't be my last.

The poorest of numerous Exodus cycling…

The poorest of numerous Exodus cycling holidays I’ve experienced. Despite a very good tour guide the holiday didn’t work. Poor hotels, absence of a second guide so poor supervision of back markers, planned itinerary resulted in very late arrival at hotels, not very interesting cycling. A promised half day on the final day didn’t happen as we were forced to take an earlier flight on the final day.
