101 Best Travel Movies Pin

1.  Eat, Pray, Love

Location – Italy India Indonesia

Based on a best-selling memoir, Julia Roberts stars as Elizabeth Gilbert, as a newly divorced woman looking to step out of her comfort zone by embarking on a journey around the world.  Her travels include mouth-watering meals in Italy, the power of prayer and silence in India & finding inner peace in Indonesia.

This classic favorite is a must-see for anyone afflicted with the travel bug. I can’t watch this movie without ordering pizza and searching for flights to Bali.

Eat Pray Love

  • English, French, Spanish (Subtitles)
  • Audience Rating: PG-13 (Parents Strongly Cautioned)

2.  Midnight in Paris

Location -Paris

Woody Allen’s opening 3-minute montage of  Paris  will have you booking a flight before the movie has even begun! Owen Wilson plays Gil Pender, a successful yet uninspired Hollywood screenwriter, who finds the gift of time travel and inspiration at midnight.

Going back to the Roaring 20s, he parties with the likes of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, and Josephine Baker. Hemingway looked like such a blast to hang out with!

This is one of my favorite travel movies and I put it on any time I wish I was in Paris…which is a lot!

3.  Out of Africa

Location – Kenya

Filmed on location in Kenya including the Shaba National Game Reserve, Out of Africa was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 7 of them for this autobiographical novel by Isak Dinesen with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in the starring roles.

Karen Blixen is a Danish woman who comes to Kenya with her husband to farm cattle. Her marriage doesn’t work out, but she falls in love with Kenya and its people, connecting with the locals as she helps with education and medical needs.

The movie tells the story of love, heartbreak, and having the strength to stay true to yourself. You had me at Africa…and of course, Meryl Streep.

  • Sydney Pollack (Director)
  • Audience Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)

4.  The English Patient

Location – Tunisia & Italy

Set in Italy during the final days of World War II, this beautiful film combines romance and adventure to tell a classic story after a man is badly burned. The movie flashes back and forth from the perspective of the patient as he shares about his life.

It was nominated for 12 Oscars, winning 9. Directed by Anthony Minghella (who also directed The Talented Mr. Ripley), the movie was shot on location in Tunisia and Italy. The scenery and cinematography are breathtaking!

5.  The Talented Mr. Ripley

Location – Italy

Two years after Good Will Hunting launched Matt Damon’s career, he showed off his acting chops by playing the diabolical and talented Tom Ripley who is impersonating another character in the movie.

The film’s talented cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, and Cate Blanchette. Aside from a few opening minutes in New York, the film is shot on location, entirely in Italy, including stunning shots of Positano, Ischia, Procida, and Anzio.

Famous locations included the Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, and the Piazza di Spagna in Rome, and Cafe Florian in Piazza San Marco in Venice. I liked Matt Damon as Will Hunting much, much better but I can’t resist gorgeous Italy!

The Talented Mr. Ripley

  • Damon, Matt, Paltrow, Gwyneth, Law, Jude (Actors)
  • Minghella, Anthony (Director)

6.  Lost in Translation

  Location – Japan

This 2003 romantic comedy-drama starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johannson in Tokyo provides glimpses of local Japanese spots from Temples to karaoke bars. The movie was nominated for four Academy Awards. Director Sophia Coppola won the Oscar for best original screenplay.

This relatively low-budget movie is about being lonely and the stress of trying to interact with others who are culturally different from what you’re used to. Bill Murray’s performance is understated, skilled acting but the city of Tokyo stole the show for me. Anyone up for some sushi?

Lost in Translation [Blu-ray]

  • Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson (Actors)
  • Sofia Coppola (Director) – Sofia Coppola (Writer)
  • French, Spanish (Subtitles)

7.  Sideways

Location – Santa Ynez Valley – Wine Country

Paul Giamatti (who I still think of as John Adams after starring in the HBO series ) stars in this black comedy-drama along with Thomas Hayden Church. Two men in their forties take a weeklong trip to Santa Barbara wine country for a quasi-bachelor party. Giamatti is a depressed writer dealing with his own personal issues while his buddy is looking for one last fling.

Even if you don’t know Pinot Noirs from Merlots, you’ll still have that yearning to see vineyards with rows of grapes, while sipping new vintages on a wine tour.

Sideways (Widescreen Edition)

  • Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen (Actors)
  • Alexander Payne (Director)

8.  The Grand Budapest Hotel

Location – Fictional Country of Zubrowka

This brilliant Wes Anderson film features a great ensemble cast and won 4 Oscars from Best Costume Design to Best Original Score.

I’m a big fan of Wes Anderson films and if you’re a movie lover you know them when you see them. Anderson captures the feel perfectly of the glory days of grand luxury hotel life during the early 20th century. The owner of the hotel is falsely accused of murder and what follows is a funny series of events as others are out to get him.

P.S. When you see the movie, just try and resist your sweet tooth calling for that bakery box from Mendl’s!

Grand Budapest Hotel

  • Audience Rating: R (Restricted)

9.  Into the Wild

Location – Alaska

Thinking of planning some off-the-grid travel? This is the movie for you.

This 2007 non-fiction survival film co-produced and directed by Sean Penn is based on the story of Christopher McCandless, a guy who leaves everything behind to travel and live in the Alaskan wilderness in the early 1990s.  Although it has a tragic end, this story captures the essence of travel and the lessons learned only by experiences gained from a true adventure.

Without a doubt, this is one of the top travel movies ever.

10.  The Bond Movies

Location – All over the World

Do you have a favorite James Bond? Mine is Roger Moore.

From 7 different actors and 26 movies, James Bond has been all over the world fighting bad guys. From the moon to Morrocco, 007 has inspired travel to just about everywhere. With so many Bond movies to choose from, start with Skyfall, The Spy Who Loved Me, From Russia with Love, Casino Royale, and Spectre. And, by the way, I’ll take that martini shaken, not stirred.

11.  Amelie

Location –  Paris

Amelie is a 2001 French film that was nominated for 5 Academy Awards. After spending her childhood in isolation, she becomes a waitress at a Paris cafe. Her childhood experience leaves her searching for love, but also trying to help others who want to find love, as well.

The film was a critical success, and to date, it’s the highest-grossing French-language film released in the US. It’s spoken in French, so subtitles are vital here unless you’re fluent in French. It’s also a great way to practice your French language skills…or just sit back, listen, and remember how it feels to enjoy a Paris cafe.

Amelie

  • Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz, Lorella Cravotta (Actors)
  • Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Director)
  • English (Subtitle)

12.  Almost Famous

Location – USA Road Trip

What’s better than a road trip? A road trip with a rock band, of course!

Written and directed by Cameron Crowe, this movie is a semi-autobiography about Crowe himself. As a teenage writer for Rolling Stone, Crowe toured with the Eagles, Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Led Zeppelin. Kate Hudson also stars as a groupie who travels with the band, although, by the end of the movie we learn she’s much more than that.

Even though this movie didn’t do well at the box office, it received Academy Awards nominations and won for Best Original Screenplay.

Almost Famous

  • Billy Crudup, Kate Hudson, Patrick Fugit (Actors)
  • Cameron Crowe (Director)

13.  Cast Away

Location – Deserted Tropical Island in the Pacific

Ever wish you could just get away from the world and spend time on a deserted island? What would you take? Could you build a raft out of palm trees or fish with a spear? Could you get a fire lit on a beach with just sticks? Tom Hanks teaches all the skills you need should you find yourself in a similar situation.

Shot in paradise, the ocean views and island scenes are gorgeous. As much as I like this movie and Tom Hanks, I’d much rather land on a tropical island with some lounge chairs and cocktails.

Cast Away by 20th Century Fox by Robert Zemeckis

14.  Chocolat

Location –  Fictional French village of Lansquenet-sous-Tannes

This film proves my longstanding theory. Chocolate makes everything better. That and hanging out in a lovely French village. Chocolat is the story of a woman who is new to town and sells the chocolates she makes in her shop.

Along the way, she changes the hearts and minds of the little town, although not without some drama which includes the arrival of Johnny Depp’s character. This part drama part romantic film was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture. The acting from Juliette Binoche and Judi Dench are stellar.

Chocolat [Blu-ray]

  • Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp, Lena Olin (Actors)
  • Lasse Hallstr m (Director) – Kit Golden (Producer)

15.  Vicki Cristina Barcelona

Location – Barcelona

This Woody Allen-directed romantic comedy stars Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, and Penelope Cruz.  I felt a deep connection to this film because I love the city of Barcelona.

In the movie, you see Barcelona through the eyes of 2 American students, who both have an affair with the same Spanish artist. The artist’s ex-wife re-enters the picture for a full look at love, the institution of marriage, and the roles society expects of us…should we decide to conform. Throughout the movie, the city of Barcelona shines through its architecture, food, and culture.

16.  Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Location – New Zealand

Is there anything better than spending a winter or rainy Saturday watching the Lord of the Rings Trilogy pretending you’re Frodo and Sam trekking through the New Zealand landscape?

Based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien, Middle Earth’s only hope to avoid the shadow of darkness is in the hands of Frodo Baggins, a Hobbit from the Shire. Along the way on his quest, the sweeping New Zealand landscapes will leave you in awe. Load up on snacks for 9 hours of adventure…Minus the orcs.

17.  Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Location – Iceland to the Himalayas

A feel-good movie about a man who works in an office and dreams of adventures, which ultimately takes him from Scandinavia to Central Asia in search of his destiny.

Ben Stiller’s character is on a journey of courage, whether it’s to finally ask out the co-worker he likes or to discover what the world can offer. The story is all about turning your dreams into reality. As any traveler will tell you, actual voyages usually come with an internal voyage, too. This movie will inspire all of us to find out more about ourselves as we dare to explore the world.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

18.  Far and Away

Location – Oklahoma

Far and Away is directed by Ron Howard and stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. The two play Irish immigrants in the 1890s who’ve come to America for a better life. Arriving in Boston hoping for the promise of land in America, life is not as easy as imagined.

With little to no money and family drama, their dream of owning land and being together seems nearly impossible. The movie’s Land Run of 1893 scene shows the fight and spirit the American Midwest is known for. The movie was actually shot in Billings, Montana, not Oklahoma and the Land Run scene included nearly 800 hundred extras, plus hundreds of horses and wagons!

This movie will leave you longing for a horseback ride across the Midwest to discover the spirit of the American frontier.

Far and Away [DVD]

  • Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson (Actors)
  • Ron Howard (Director) – Bob Dolman (Writer) – Brian Grazer (Producer)
  • English, Spanish (Subtitles)

19.  Up in the Air

Location – Airports / Planes

Up in the Air was one of 2009’s best films and was nominated for 6 Academy Awards. George Clooney and Anna Kendrick star in this comedy-drama. Clooney’s character is training Kendrick’s character on how to fire people from their jobs as they both work for a downsizing company. They’re constantly flying to new places for work and along the way, Kendrick realizes this is not the path for her.

For points and miles aficionados, George Clooney’s character hits 10 million miles on his frequent flyer account. Is anyone else thinking upgrades?

Up In The Air

  • Anna Kendrick, George Clooney, Vera Farmiga (Actors)
  • Portuguese, English, French, Spanish (Subtitles)

20.  The Motorcycle Diaries

Location – South America

The trip that made Che Guevara, Che Guevara. Traveling through South America on a trip that started as a fun adventure, ultimately made Guevara the revolutionary we know today.

The movie is a dramatization of Che Guevara’s memoirs as he traveled from the Andes in Chile to the Amazon in Peru on an 8,700-mile journey. Along the way, he discovers life in Latin America, particularly the poverty so many of the indigenous population is rooted in. What he sees inspires him to fight against unfair class systems and economic hardships.

Today, tons of travelers inquire about how to follow the same trail that turned Che into a revolutionary icon.

21.  Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Location –  NYC to Chicago to Wichita

If I ever end up in a nightmare travel situation I would totally want to be with these two characters.

This 1980s classic directed by John Hughes and starring Steve Martin and the late great John Candy play two men trying to get home to Chicago from New York City for the Thanksgiving holiday. After Martin’s flight gets canceled due to bad weather, all means of transport become an option. He meets John Candy who plays a shower curtain salesman full of bad jokes and, as you can imagine, hysterics follow.

  • English, Spanish, French, Portuguese (Subtitles)

22.  Catch Me If You Can

Location – Airports and Airplanes

Any movie directed by Steven Speilberg, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks is already a keeper.

DiCaprio plays Frank Abagnale, Jr. who by the age of 19 was already a cunning con man pretending to be a doctor, a prosecutor, and my personal favorite, a Pan American World Airways pilot. Hanks plays an FBI agent pursuing him the entire movie.

The movie is based on a true story, which is mind-blowing to think about someone impersonating a pilot.

Catch Me If You Can (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition)

  • Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Candice Azzara (Actors)

23.  National Lampoon’s Vacation Movies

Location – U.S. Road Trip, European Vacation

How can you not love the Griswolds? They are an American family who likes to take vacations, from a U.S. road trip to a European vacation. However, every one of them goes hysterically wrong!

From 1983-2015, the Vacation movies grossed nearly $300,000,000 and I loved every minute of the nonsense that would eventually accompany every trip.

The series is based on a John Hughes short story called “Vacation 58” that was originally published for National Lampoon magazine.

The trail stretches from British Columbia in Canada through Southern California. It’s known to be one of the most difficult hiking trails in North America.

Strayed (played by Witherspoon) does this despite a lack of hiking experience. At some point, we can all use a journey of self-discovery & healing. Just bring enough water and the right boots.

Two best friends set off for a weekend trip that quickly becomes an escape as they try to avoid the police. The authorities eventually corner them at the Grand Canyon and the 2 women are faced with a decision about what to do.

Most of the filming was done entirely in the states of California and Utah, with the primary filming locations in rural areas around Bakersfield, CA and Moab, UT. The film was met with mostly positive reviews and uncanny curiosity about a then-unknown Brad Pitt and his diet and workout routine!

85.  Les Miserables

Les Miserables transports you back in time to the 19th century in the years leading up to and during the French Revolution in France. The classic story has been told by book, on the stage, and in this movie musical.

The story centers around Jean Valjean who is put in jail for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. Finally out, he realizes he’ll need to break the terms of his parole to find work and make a new life for himself.

However, Javert is a police officer who never stops looking for him, believing once a thief always a thief. These encounters with Javert threaten Valjean’s new life and the daughter he is raising after satisfying the dying wish of Fantine, a former employee of Valjean’s who was forced into prostitution.

Whether you’re a fan of movie musicals or not, director Tom Hooper made the right decision to record live vocals on set so the acting matched the singing for a more realistic production. Les Miserables was nominated for 8 Oscars and won 4 of them.

Rebecca Ferguson and Timothee Chalet in a scene from ‘Dune’

15 films shot on at least three continents

This story originally appeared on Giggster and was produced and distributed in partnership with Stacker Studio.

Thanks to the magic of moviemaking, films can transport viewers anywhere imaginable—from fantastical new worlds in distant galaxies to your own backyard. Behind the scenes, though, it's up to highly skilled film crews to pinpoint the very best filming locations to bring these stories to life on screen. Some movies require quite a bit of globetrotting, but how many notable films were actually shot across, say, three or more continents?

To help answer this question, Giggster used data from IMDb  and  Metacritic to identify 15 movies that were shot across at least three different continents. Films are listed in chronological order.

As you might have expected, many such films are action-packed blockbusters that follow heroes as they perform death-defying stunts across the globe. Others are ambitious sci-fi projects that bring exciting alien worlds to life by traversing otherworldly locations on our own planet. Of course, big-budget blockbusters aren't the only movies with such global reach. Also included on this list are documentaries, which capture their subjects' extraordinary lives by examining the international footprint they left behind.

So, did your favorite globetrotting movie make the cut? From "Lawrence of Arabia" to Denis Villeneuve's "Dune," here are 15 films that came to life across three or more continents.

Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

- Director: David Lean - IMDb user rating: 8.3 - Metascore: 100 - Runtime: 218 minutes

Based on the life of T.E. Lawrence and his 1926 book "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom," "Lawrence of Arabia" stars Peter O'Toole as the iconic English officer who united Arab tribes against the Ottoman Turks during World War I. The film went on to win seven Oscars, including Best Picture, and the epic is often praised as one of the most influential movies ever made.

Although "Lawrence of Arabia" was originally meant to be filmed entirely in Jordan , many of its desert scenes were also shot in Morocco and Spain. The Spanish city of Seville stood in for the diverse cities of Cairo, Jerusalem, and Damascus, while the infamous Tafas Massacre was filmed in Ouarzazate, Morocco—despite the real event taking place in Syria. The movie was also filmed at London's St. Paul's Cathedral and at California's Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area.

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

- Director: Lewis Gilbert - IMDb user rating: 7.0 - Metascore: 55 - Runtime: 125 minutes

In this James Bond installment, the iconic British spy played by Roger Moore teams up with Soviet agent Anya Amasova (Barbara Bach) to stop the evil Karl Stromberg's (Curt Jurgens) plot to destroy New York City and create a breakaway civilization under the sea. As the title would suggest, things grow even more complicated when Bond and Anya's shaky Cold War alliance suddenly turns romantic. Like any Bond film, "The Spy Who Loved Me" chases its hero around the globe, necessitating a worldwide shoot. However, one could argue that this film was particularly ambitious—it was shot at Pinewood Studios in England, with on-location shoots across Italy, Egypt, Switzerland, Scotland, and Canada. To top it off, the movie's underwater scenes were filmed at Coral Harbor in the Bahamas.

Sans Soleil (1983)

- Director: Chris Marker - IMDb user rating: 7.8 - Metascore: data not available - Runtime: 100 minutes

In this experimental French film, director Chris Marker edits footage collected from countries across the globe into a collage-like narrative. The end result features a female narrator (Florence Delay in the French version) recounting a cameraman's reflections on how human memory alters our perceptions of time and history.

Often described as a travelogue or cinematic essay, "Sans Soleil" combines footage of everyday life  in Iceland, Paris, San Francisco, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and Tokyo. The film is particularly indebted to Japan, incorporating various clips from Japanese movies and TV series. San Francisco is also particularly significant, as Marker cited Alfred Hitchock's " Vertigo " as an influence in his work and even includes clips from Hitchcock's masterpiece in his film.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

- Director: Steven Spielberg - IMDb user rating: 8.2 - Metascore: 65 - Runtime: 127 minutes

Steven Spielberg brought the original "Indiana Jones" trilogy to an end with 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." In the film, Harrison Ford's daring, titular archaeologist sets out to rescue his estranged father Henry Jones (Sean Connery), who disappeared while hunting for the Holy Grail. Along the way, he's forced to take on Hitler's Nazis in the months leading up to World War II.

England's Elstree Studios stood in for many locations in the film, including the Venetian catacombs and Jones' friend Walter Donovan's apartment. Meanwhile, thousand-year-old carved buildings in Petra, Jordan, stood as the exterior of the Grail's temple, while the Jones family home was actually a house in Antonito, Colorado. Although Spielberg and his crew originally planned to film scenes in the cliff dwellings of Colorado's Mesa Verde Park, local Hopi Indians objected due to the site's sacred history .

Malcolm X (1992)

- Director: Spike Lee - IMDb user rating: 7.7 - Metascore: 73 - Runtime: 202 minutes

"Malcolm X" is Spike Lee's tribute to the life of the legendary Black activist, played by Denzel Washington. Inspired by Alex Haley's 1965 biography, it tracks Malcolm X's life from childhood to his eventual assassination in 1965. Along the way, Lee dramatizes key events in the civil rights leader's life, from his incarceration to his conversion to Islam.

Notably, "Malcolm X" became the first American movie and first nondocumentary to receive permission to film in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca, which prohibits non-Muslims from entering. Various locations around New York City stood in for the Boston of Malcolm X's youth. Meanwhile, scenes of his lectures were shot at Columbia University, and his first date with future wife Betty Shabazz, played by Angela Bassett, were filmed at the American Museum of Natural History. Filming in Cairo depicted the activist finding his way within various holy sites around the globe. Finally, the "Malcolm X" epilogue was filmed in Johannesburg, where Nelson Mandela makes a cameo appearance to teach students about the late activist's legacy.

Gladiator (2000)

- Director: Ridley Scott - IMDb user rating: 8.5 - Metascore: 67 - Runtime: 155 minutes

Russell Crowe stars in "Gladiator" as the Roman general Maximus Decimus, who is betrayed and nearly murdered when the emperor's scheming son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) murders his father and Maximus' entire family to seize the throne. Sold into slavery, Maximus trains as a gladiator to seek revenge against the corrupt new emperor.

The film's opening battle scenes in the forests of first-century Germany actually came to life in the Bourne Woods near Surrey, England . Ancient Rome was recreated in Fort Ricasoli, Malta, complete with a 52-foot high replica of the Colosseum. Scenes of Maximus' enslavement and gladiatorial training primarily took place in Morocco, near the Atlas Mountains.

Winged Migration (2001)

- Directors: Jacques Perrin, Jacques Cluzaud, Michel Debats - IMDb user rating: 7.9 - Metascore: 82 - Runtime: 89 minutes

This Oscar-nominated documentary delves deep into the trials and tribulations of bird migration. Making the film was a tall order, even by documentary standards—it was filmed on all seven continents between July 1997 and the spring of 2001. Utilizing in-flight cameras, viewers appear to glide through the sky alongside a wide variety of birds , from swans and seagulls to penguins and cranes.

Given the film's wide breadth of bird subjects, it's no surprise that naming all the filming locations is also a tall order. However, notable spots visited within the film include Hokkaido, Japan; Calvados, France; Kagbeni, Nepal; and Nahuel Huapi, Argentina.

Mamma Mia! (2008)

- Director: Phyllida Lloyd - IMDb user rating: 6.4 - Metascore: 51 - Runtime: 108 minutes

Who knew that an ABBA jukebox musical would become a cultural phenomenon in its own right? Based on the stage show of the same name, "Mamma Mia!" follows young bride-to-be Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) as she invites three men from her mother's (Meryl Streep) past to her wedding in hopes of finally meeting her real father. Naturally, chaos ensues.

"Mamma Mia!" unfolds in Greece, all around the island that hosts Donna's villa. In real life, most outdoor scenes were filmed on the Greek island of Skopelos, as well as the seaside settlement of Damouchari, Greece. Most of the film's interior scenes were filmed at England's Pinewood Studios, where Donna's villa was constructed in full. In the opening scene, Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) is also shown dashing through Marrakech, Morocco, on his way to Sophie's wedding.

Contagion (2011)

- Director: Steven Soderbergh - IMDb user rating: 6.8 - Metascore: 70 - Runtime: 106 minutes

Years before the world found itself faced with a real, life-altering pandemic, Stephen Soderbergh brought those fears to life in his 2011 film "Contagion." Starring Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and a host of other stars, the drama tracks a dangerous airborne disease's devastating global impact, as government officials and scientists around the world race to find a cure.

Filming began in Hong Kong, where the character of Beth (Gwyneth Paltrow) first contracts the mysterious virus. Key filming locations within the city included the Jumbo Floating Restaurant, repurposed as a casino; the Princess Margaret Hospital; and Hong Kong International Airport. The majority of filming took place in Chicago, which also doubled as Beth's Minneapolis suburb. Later, Soderbergh shot scenes involving the exterior of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, with additional photography in London, Dublin, and Geneva.

Samsara (2011)

- Director: Ron Fricke - IMDb user rating: 8.4 - Metascore: 65 - Runtime: 102 minutes

A philosophical travelogue, "Samsara" was shot over the course of five years in nearly 100 locations across five continents. It's one of only a handful of films to be shot in 70mm film over the last several decades. According to the official description, the film "transports us to sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial sites, and natural wonders." In the filmmakers' words, the film "subverts our expectations of a traditional documentary, instead encouraging our own inner interpretations inspired by images and music that infuses the ancient with the modern."

Naturally, there are simply  too many locations in "Samsara" to name, from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans to the opulence of France's Palace of Versailles.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

- Director: Christopher Nolan - IMDb user rating: 8.4 - Metascore: 78 - Runtime: 164 minutes

The final installment in Christopher Nolan's "Batman" trilogy picks up eight years after the events of "The Dark Knight." When ruthless terrorist Bane (Tom Hardy) and cunning con artist Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) emerge, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is drawn out of retirement into one final battle to save Gotham City.

Wollaton Hall in Nottingham, England, stood in as Wayne's family home, Wayne Manor. Scenes of Wayne's prison escape were brought to life at the Mehra Fort in Jodhpur, India. Pittsburgh played a sizable role in filming for "Dark Knight Rises"—most notably, the scene of Bane taking a Gotham Rogues football game hostage was filmed at Heinz Field, featuring over 10,000 extras and real members of the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers.

Prometheus (2012)

- Director: Ridley Scott - IMDb user rating: 7.0 - Metascore: 64 - Runtime: 124 minutes

In this quasi-prequel to Ridley Scott's "Alien," a far-flung clue about humanity's origins leads a space crew to a strange new planet. But as they dig deeper into this new world's mythology, a series of hidden dangers turns their expedition into a fight for survival. Among the star-studded cast of "Prometheus" includes Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Noomi Rapace, and Guy Pearce.

The film's opening scene of a humanoid alien watching a departing spacecraft was shot at the famous Dettifoss waterfall in Iceland. Scott later said that Iceland was chosen as a filming location due to its "rough," "Jurassic-like" qualities. Next up, scenes of the crew discovering their ancient star map were shot at the Old Man of Storr on Scotland's Isle of Skye. Elsewhere, the mountains of the Wadi Rum nature preserve in Jordan stood in for the alien planet's rocky backdrop.

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)

- Director: Jim Jarmusch - IMDb user rating: 7.2 - Metascore: 79 - Runtime: 123 minutes

"Only Lovers Left Alive" stars Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as Adam and Eve, two centuries-old vampire lovers contemplating their place in the modern world. A club scene was filmed in Hamburg, Germany, while Eve's old apartment was based in Tangier, Morocco. However, the crux of the film takes place in Adam's dilapidated Victorian home.

In real life, the home is called the Whitney Mansion and is based in Detroit's Brush Park neighborhood. In an interview, director Jim Jarmusch noted his  affection for the Motor City , noting that as a child he had regarded it as "almost mythological, the Paris of the Midwest." He also praised its "post-industrial visual feeling."

Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

- Director: Christopher McQuarrie - IMDb user rating: 7.7 - Metascore: 86 - Runtime: 147 minutes

"Mission: Impossible - Fallout" marks the sixth entry in the popular "Mission Impossible" action franchise. In this installment, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team rush to stop arms dealer John Lark (Henry Cavill) and a terrorist group called the Apostles from carrying out nuclear attacks.

Like any "Mission Impossible" film, "Fallout" finds Tom Cruise and company pulling off death-defying stunts all over the world. The scene in which Cruise leaps from a C-17 plane was shot near Abu Dhabi, while most of the helicopter scenes were filmed in Queenstown, New Zealand. Much of "Fallout" also took place in Paris, in locations such as the Arc de Triomphe and Le Grand Palais.

The movie was temporarily shut down in London when Cruise broke his ankle filming a chase sequence at St. Paul's Cathedral and Blackfriars Bridge, causing production to suspend  for seven weeks .

Dune (2021)

- Director: Denis Villeneuve - IMDb user rating: 8.0 - Metascore: 74 - Runtime: 155 minutes

Denis Villeneuve's vision of Frank Herbert's bestselling archeo-futurist novel was long anticipated by fans of the book. But, like "Top Gun: Maverick," the movie suffered production and release delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The plot of a duke's son (Timothée Chalamet) leaving his lush home world for a long-oppressed desert planet containing the most precious commodity in the universe was notoriously too sweeping for David Lynch's much-maligned 1984 version, which was mostly shot in the deserts of Mexico. So Villeneuve, as a condition of taking on "Dune," split the story into two feature films .

Jordan's Wadi Rum village, the Liwa Oasis of the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East, as well as the fjords of Norway and the forests of Canada all provide different backdrops in the first installment. Villeneuve weaves them together to depict the Nordic planet of Caladan and the Messiah-awaiting desert planet Arrakis.

Places Travelled: Connecticut resident Dr Jones has been all over the place, making pit stops in Nepal, Cairo, India and Venice. Talk about carbon footprints…

If He Came To Blighty: He’d no doubt stumble on an evil genius’ quest to find Excalibur and become king of the world.

The Hero: Fish-lipped, parachute-bra-wearing action heroine who’s seriously moneyed, but likes to fight evil masterminds, which means we like her.

Places Travelled: First Cambodia and Siberia to stop corrupt organisation the Illuminati, then to Shanghai and Africa to stop Pandora’s Box being opened, Lara really racks up the air miles.

If She Came To Blighty: Well, Lara’s from Blighty, so she’d fit right in. Though a guest stint on The Secret Millionaire could do wonders for her profile.

The Hero: Nicknamed Strider, Aragorn II was raised in Rivendell by the elves after the death of his father. There, he was sheltered from those who might seek to kill him - he's the heir of Isildur, see. Together with the Fellowship of the Ring, he manages to return order to Middle Earth.

Places Travelled: All over Middle Earth in his fight to defeat Sauron, from Bree’s Inn Of The Prancing Pony to Rivendell, Edoras, Minas Tirith and beyond…

If He Came To Blighty: Aragorn would make short work of the numerous medieval battle re-enactments that take place on our hallowed shores – though best give him a fake sword, eh?

Luke Skywalker

globetrotting movies

The Hero: Young farmboy who holes up with his aunt and uncle, Skywalker is whisked off for an adventure among the stars that sees him facing off with Darth Vader in a battle to the death that will determine the future of the universe.

Places Travelled: More planet-hopping than globe-trotting, Luke leaves behind his home globe of Tattooine, hits ice planet Hoth, meets Yoda on Dagobah and discovers a deeply disturbing secret at Bespin’s Cloud City…

If He Came To Blighty: He’d probably struggle to find farm work thanks to the current economy, but he could always set up his own Skywalker Ranch and charge bucket-loads on the door.

globetrotting movies

The Hero: The world’s most famous Martini-swilling spy, Bond is MI6’s finest double-o agent, and excels at charming and/or fighting his way out of any tight situation.

Places Travelled: Of all the movie heroes, Bond’s sheer longevity (technically, he’s been sleuthing since 1962) means he’s been to pretty much every picturesque location Earth has to offer.

If He Came To Blighty: Brit boy Bond would feel right at home here, though if he’s looking to shake things up, how about a night class in flower arranging or cake baking? Would make a change from the macho warfare.

Jason Bourne

globetrotting movies

The Hero: Amnesia-suffering Special Forces agent Bourne is best-known for his ability to make a weapon out of just about anything, and the awesome fighting prowess he conceals behind his boy-next-door looks.

Places Travelled: Found adrift in the Mediterranean Sea, then heading to Zurich, Paris, Goa, Naples and Madrid, Bourne’s certainly seen the sights.

If He Came To Blighty: Bourne headed to London in Ultimatum , but what about a trip to Liverpool – we’re sure he’d make short work of any unsavoury sorts stomping the streets there. (Note: we love you Liverpudlians really.)

The Hero: Boy-sized wonder Atreyu is fantasy world Fantasia’s only hope. A destructive force known only as The Nothing is destroying it, and it’s fallen to the brave young warrior to save the day – and Fantasia.

Places Travelled: Astride his trusted steed Artax, Atreyu quests the many corners of Fantasia for a world-saving solution, coming across the Swamps of Sadness, the Southern Oracle, and the Childlike Empress’ awe-inducing palace.

If He Came To Blighty: Atreyu would get all Seabiscuit on us as a jockey wonderkid.

Detective John McLane

globetrotting movies

The Hero: Family man first, action hero cop second, John McLane has a smart mouth and the muscle to back it up. After rescuing his wife’s office building from bad guy Alan Rickman in the first Die Hard , he finds himself in further life or death scenarios that all seem to include massive explosions.

Places Travelled: A New York native, McLane travels to Los Angeles and Washington Dulles before heading back to the Big Apple. Carbon footprint minimum.

If He Came To Blighty: A holiday in London might do McLane some good, but the very day he decides to visit the Gherkin it would no doubt be taken over by a bloodthirsty, trigger-happy mob boss…

Forrest Gump

globetrotting movies

The Hero: Georgia native Gump has had a heck of a life, going from bullied public school kid to Vietnam Hero, ping pong champion and long distance runner. He really believes life is like a box of chocolates...

Places Travelled: A confection of locales have been graced with Gump’s presence, including the aforementioned Vietnam, Washington, and all manner of American landmarks that he runs through.

If He Came To Blighty: If he’d come over here in the ‘80s, you’d probably see him crop up drinking a carton of milk in some documentary/news footage of Margaret Thatcher.

Dian Fossey

globetrotting movies

The Hero: Kentucky-based Fossey is so inspired by the work of anthropologist Louis Leakey that she dedicates her entire life to the study of primates. But her devotion is soon tested when poachers attempt to kill the very primates she’s attempting to protect.

Places Travelled: Fossey travels from America to the Rwandan jungles in order to live among the gentle furry giants.

If She Came To Blighty: Sadly, Fossey never made it here before her tragic death, but if she had done she’d no doubt have established a ‘Save the Pigeons’ campaign in London.

Rick O'Connell

globetrotting movies

The Hero: Scruffy ragamuffin and fearless adventurer O’Connell gets more than he bargained for when he attempts to find the lost city of Hamunaptra - there's an undead mummy (the evil kind) laying in wait.

Places Travelled: Mostly Egypt and Manchuria, though he tangos with all sorts of international villains.

If He Came To Blighty: He’s already been here (British wife and all), and had a perilous run-in with a London bus. Just wait ‘til he hears about the Underground…

T.E. Lawrence

globetrotting movies

The Hero: Morally conflicted war hero Lawrence deals heavy blows to the enemy during World War I, but is troubled by the violence that he is inflicting on others. A British Army lieutenant, he’s therefore something of a misfit.

Places Travelled: Starting out stationed in Cairo, Lawrence then heads to Arabia where he plans attacks on various vulnerable locations.

If He Came To Blighty: British to the core, Lawrence wouldn't be out of place here. The camel might get in the way, though.

globetrotting movies

The Hero: The One, a prophesised saviour of the world, whose unique powers mean he’s practically a superman when plugged into the Matrix. Not bad for a glorified techno nerd.

Places Travelled: Both inside and outside of the Matrix, Neo has been all over the place, from the non-descript city of his home, to Zion, a castle in the middle of nowhere (as seen in Reloaded) , and the strange ‘subspace’ of Revolutions ' subway.

If He Came To Blighty: His black trenchcoat and sunnies would mark him out as the cool kid at the party. Soon, every shop on Oxford Street would sell Neo coats and sunnies, making it all the more difficult for Agent Smith to find him in a crowd...

globetrotting movies

The Hero: “Bend me, shape me, any way you want me” is probably a phrase often heard in the Parr household (aka The Incredibles). Living up to her name, Elastigirl is a super-flexible superhero – which comes in handy when she’s attempting to keep control over three rebellious kids.

Places Travelled: Though we’re never told where her superhero escapades took her before the movie (we’re sure they were all exotic), Elastigirl travels to a ‘remote island’ to help save her hubbie when he’s kidnapped by evil genius Syndrome.

If She Came To Blighty: A family holiday over here would inevitably involve a superhero smackdown that causes the destruction of some famous London landmarks.

8 Best Romantic Travel Movies

Home / Africa & Middle East / 8 Best Romantic Travel Movies

When you envision a romantic travel night out, you probably imagine sipping cocktails under the stars while your feet dip into the waters of the South Pacific in Bora Bora, or sharing oysters and champagne in a chic bistro in Montmartre, Paris, not sitting on your couch at home. But date nights ain’t what they used to be and Bora Bora and Paris are currently not possibilities for a romantic travel night. So a night at home watching a romantic movie will have to do.

In order to help you sort the wheat from the chaff when it comes to romantic travel movies, we’ve shared the following eight recommendations. As we have with our other travel movie lists , we’ve avoided most of the typical suggestions, so don’t go looking for Under the Tuscan Sun. Instead, we’ve chosen good movies, first and foremost, while also understanding that there’s more to romance than fairy tale endings and generic romantic comedies. If you and your partner are missing travel, hopefully, these movies help satisfy your wanderlust while providing the sort of romantic atmosphere that’s necessary for date night.

What are the best romantic travel movies?

Before sunrise (and before sunset and before midnight).

globetrotting movies

It’s fitting that we have Before Sunrise at the top of the list, because not only is it the best romantic travel movie of all time, but it’s one of the most romantic movies, period. This 1995 independent drama from Richard Linklaker follows Jesse, a young American played by Ethan Hawke on vacation in Europe who starts up a flirtation with Celine, a pretty young Frenchwoman played by Julie Delpy, on a train in Austria. He convinces her to get off the train with him and spend 24 hours with him in Vienna as he waits for his flight back home the next morning. As they wander around the Austrian capital visiting landmarks and local bars, they get to know each other, discuss the meaning of life, and fall in love. Before Sunrise condenses the early, exciting moments of a relationship into one day set against one of the loveliest backdrops imaginable. The sequels, Before Sunset, set in Paris nine years later, and Before Midnight, set another nine years later in Greece, expand the story and delve deeper into the relationship between Jesse and Celine, but the original has the greatest romantic power.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

globetrotting movies

Romance isn’t the main focus of this comedic drama about a group of English retirees (Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, Tom Wilkinson, Ronald Pickup, Celia Imrie) who move to Jaipur, India to live in the titular retirement home run by an eager young entrepreneur (Dev Patel). But the movie is about the possibility for renewal in a place away from home, which includes the chance for having a fulfilling romance late in life. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel showcases the rejuvenating potential of travel as well as the beautiful colours of Rajasthan. The all-star cast puts on an acting clinic, while the various romantic subplots are satisfying without being reductive. This is a genuine crowd-pleaser that celebrates age, travel, and love, which makes it perfect for a romantic travel movie night.

Call Me by Your Name

globetrotting movies

This romantic coming-of-age story is about as sultry as movies get on this list. Set in Italy in 1983, it follows a young American, Elio (Timothée Chalamet), who is spending the summer with his parents in a rented villa. His father’s student, Oliver (Armie Hammer), comes to stay with them and over the course of the summer, Elio and Oliver find themselves falling for each other. Call Me by Your Name basks in the beauty of everything on screen, from the sunny orchards of Northern Italy to the sumptuous meals the characters enjoy to the physical beauty of the actors themselves. The movie won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and was nominated for a whole host of others, including Best Picture, but its soundtrack, framed around two songs by Sufjan Stevens and featuring classical pieces by John Adams and Ryuichi Sakamoto and Euro-pop hits by Giorgio Moroder, is maybe its most appealing element. It’s a great romantic movie option that’ll whisk you across the world.

Lost in Translation

globetrotting movies

A travel movie classic, Lost in Translation follows two lonely Americans, Bob (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), who draw close to each other while staying in the same hotel over a few weeks in Tokyo. While the film isn’t a conventional romance—the characters never become a couple—the movie beautifully captures romantic yearning and the way that companionship is often the most necessary aspect of love. It also revels in the neon-soaked nightlife of Tokyo, with memorable scenes set in karaoke bars and hotel lounges. Few movies better capture the modern ennui of looking for companionship in a modern city far from home.

Midnight in Paris

globetrotting movies

One of Woody Allen’s most beloved movies, Midnight in Paris follows a nebbish screenwriter (Owen Wilson) who travels to Paris with his negging fiancée (Rachel McAdams) only to discover a means of travelling back to the 1920s to hang out with famous writers and artists such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrud Stein, and Salvador Dalí. Midnight in Paris wraps up romantic frustration with artistic nostalgia for the Lost Generation, which manages to capture America’s particular romantic obsession with Paris. If you’re overcome with romantic nostalgia when reading Hemingway or Fitzgerald, this is the movie for you.

Out of Africa

globetrotting movies

Perhaps the most obvious entry on this list, Out of Africa is the Best Picture-winning adaptation of Karen Blixen’s memoir about living in Kenya in the early decades of the 20th century and her romance with a handsome American big game hunter. Meryl Streep plays Blixen in the film, while Robert Redford plays her lover, Denys Finch Hatton. In many ways Out of Africa is a classic forbidden romance played out against the backdrop of the beautiful African savanna, so while the romance itself may be very conventional, the setting is anything but.

Roman Holiday

globetrotting movies

This romantic comedy classic from 1953 has Audrey Hepburn playing a rebellious princess that escapes from her royal entourage while in Rome in order to experience a bit of life as a commoner. While on her own, she meets Gregory Peck’s jaded reporter, who doesn’t recognize her, and the two fall in love as they explore Rome’s most famous landmarks together, including the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, and the Colosseum. The movie was so popular it inspired a host of copycat romantic travel movies in the 1950s, but there’s only one Roman Holiday, which is as memorable a travel romance as you’ll find. The iconic image of Hepburn and Peck riding a Vespa through Rome captures the romantic allure of exploring a foreign city while in love.

globetrotting movies

This little-seen 2013 movie is based on Robyn Davidson’s memoir about her 2,700km (1,700m) trek across the Australian Outback from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean with nothing but her dog and four camels in tow. Mia Wasikowska plays Robyn in the film, which largely plays as a showcase of Australia’s natural beauty. Adam Driver also stars as the National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan who famously photographed her journey back in 1977, and hooked up with her in the process. The romantic moments between Robyn and Rick are nice depictions of romantic admiration, but the real star here is the landscape, which has rarely been as vivid on film.

Now streaming on:

Remember when Pierce Brosnan used to make fun globetrotting movies like his turn as 007 and in the underrated remake of “ The Thomas Crown Affair ”? The charming actor clearly relished the chance to revisit that skill set in Renny Harlin ’s “The Misfits,” a “Fast and Furious” riff about a makeshift family of criminals who need Brosnan’s expert lawbreaker to help them pull off the biggest heist of their careers. Sadly, no one involved has any idea what to do with Brosnan, burying his playful performance in a film that’s almost impressively soulless. This is hollow nonsense, a film designed purely to make money in international markets that has so little actual plot that it’s insulting. The characters are bland, the dialogue is atrocious, the action is mediocre, and even the heist is a boring bust.

Pierce Brosnan is the guy trying to have a good time at the worst party he’s ever been to as he plays Richard Pace, a world-renowned criminal still pulling some small jobs but who seems to be past his thieving prime. That’s when he’s approached by The Misfits, a group of criminals who consider themselves modern day Robin Hoods. They want Pace to help them steal millions of gold bars that are reportedly being held under a maximum-security prison, but they’re not in it for the money. You see, the gold is used to fund terrorism, so they’re trying to cut off the cashflow of evil and send the profits to international charities. How noble.

The Misfits are led by Ringo ( Nick Cannon ), a bank robber, and Violet ( Jamie Chung ), a martial arts expert who loves kicking ass. They also include someone named Prince ( Rami Jaber ), no relation to the mega-talented musician, and Wick ( Mike Angelo ), but the real reason Pace gets involved is that the newest Misfit happens to be his daughter Hope ( Hermione Corfield ). There’s another carrot on the stick for Pace in the form of Warner Schultz ( Tim Roth ), the Moriarty to Pace’s Sherlock, and the guy who happens to run the prison that houses all that terrorism-funding gold.

Harlin used to be an incredibly reliable action director, helming hits like “ Die Hard 2: Die Harder ,” “ Cliffhanger ,” and “ Deep Blue Sea ,” but “The Misfits” shows none of that skill. The incredibly small number of actual action scenes are incompetently conceived and executed—the climax of the film is a dull chase across a desert wherein the predator and prey almost never share a frame, just shots of people screaming in cars as sand flies around them. It’s stunningly incompetent.

And the script isn’t any better. The caliber of dialogue here is best summarized in “I don’t date men ... I kill them” and the whole production uses its main setting of Abu Dhabi in ways that feel slightly racist, particularly in some silly accent work by Cannon, who looks so uncomfortable here that I half-expected him to start promoting “The Masked Singer.”

Only Brosnan appears like he gave a damn, finding that charisma and screen presence that made him an international star when he took on the role of Bond. However, anyone hoping that this wannabe franchise-starter could be an action comeback for the former 007 should reconsider. After all, a second film in this series may lead a real-life group like the Misfits to plan a heist to try and steal its funding. It would be for the greater good.

In theaters today, June 11 th , and on digital and On Demand on Tuesday, June 15 th .

10 Animated Shows And Movies That Blew Us Away At Netflix's Animation Presentation

We're just a few days away from the premiere of "Ultraman: Rising" on Netflix, the latest addition to the ever-growing animation library of the streamer. Animation has been on shaky ground for the last few years, with the animation guild growing stronger to fight for fair contractions as creatives continue to battle against the dystopian threat of artificial intelligence . Fortunately, animation is still as popular and well-loved as ever, and Netflix has been absolutely crushing it as of late. Not only did the streamer pull in an Academy Award for Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio" in 2022, but shows like "Blue Eye Samurai," "Arcane," "Love, Death, & Robots," and movies like "Wendell & Wild," "The Sea Beast," and "The Mitchells vs. the Machines" are some of the best releases of original animation, period .

Today I was in attendance at the Next on Netflix: Animation event to preview their upcoming slate of animation, and dear reader, I practically turned into a Tex Avery cartoon with how wide my eyes got admiring what is heading our way. Hosted by "Ultraman: Rising" star Christopher Sean (with interruptions from "Big Mouth" star Nick Kroll as Lola), anime, CG animation, stop-motion claymation, and breathtaking 2D artistry were all on display, but there were some genuine gasps in the audience for some of the new projects. Here are the 10 things that totally blew me away.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft

Picking up after the events of the video game's Survivor Trilogy ("Tomb Raider," "Rise of the Tomb Raider," "Shadow of the Tomb Raider") the new animated series follows the globetrotting heroine's next chapter as the iconic adventurer. Debuting over a quarter of a century after her first appearance, Lara Croft (voiced here by "Mission: Impossible" star Hayley Atwell) continues to explore ancient mysteries and uncover lost truths across breathtaking and dangerous destinations. Tasha Huo serves as the writer/showrunner/executive producer, and joining Atwell in the voice cast is Allen Maldonado and Earl Baylon. The animation from Powerhouse Animation Studio looks gorgeous, the action looks electric, and I can't wait to see what adventures Netflix has in store.

"Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft" premieres on October 10, 2024.

Twilight of the Gods

Netflix has been giving Zack Snyder carte blanche these days with "Army of the Dead," "Army of Thieves," and his recent epics "Rebel Moon Part 1 & 2," but he's not stopping there. He's also got a new animated series coming this fall called "Twilight of the Gods," which is his take on Norse mythology. Featuring the voices of Sylvia Hoeks, Stuart Martin, Pilou Asbaek, John Noble, Paterson Joseph, Rahul Kohli, Jamie Clayton, Kristopher Hivju, Peter Stormare, Jamie Chung, Lauren Cohan, Corey Stoll, and many others, Snyder also served as a director on two of the eight episodes. Xilam Animation provided the visuals, and while admittedly I was more into the animation than the story that was teased, I'm most curious to see how Snyder's brand of storytelling works in animation.

There's no date yet announced for the premiere, but "Twilight of the Gods" will arrive sometime this fall.

In Your Dreams

Directed by Alex Woo and Erik Benson, "In Your Dreams" is a very charming family-friendly animated adventure comedy about Stevie (12) and her little brother Elliot (8) who enter the creative land of their own dreams in search of the Sandman to grant their wish of having the perfect family. The dreamland is filled with fantastical creatures and anthropomorphic objects (so many talking zombie breakfast foods!), but their sidekick is a wisecracking giraffe filled with bologna voiced by Craig Robinson. Simu Liu voices the kids' father, and while the audience was cracking up at some of these dream creatures' personalities, I have a sneaking suspicion this film is gonna pull a fast one on us all and make us cry.

"In Your Dreams" arrives in 2025.

BELOVED CHARACTER ACTRESS MARGO MARTINDALE IS VOICING A ROALD DAHL CHARACTER, THIS IS NOT A DRILL! Netflix has developed a great relationship with the Roald Dahl estate as of late, with Wes Anderson's fantastic short films in 2023 and now their animated adaptation of "The Twits." Here's the official synopsis:

Mr. and Mrs. Twit are the meanest, smelliest, nastiest people in the world who also happen to own and operate the most disgusting, most dangerous, most idiotic amusement park in the world, Twitlandia. But when the Twits rise to power in their town, two brave orphans and a family of magical animals are forced to become as tricky as the Twits in order to save the city. A hysterically funny, wild ride of a film (chock-full of the Twits' beloved tricks–from the Wormy Spaghetti to the Dreaded Shrinks), The Twits is also a story for our times, about the never-ending battle between cruelty and empathy.

Directed by Phil Johnston from a script by Johnston and Meg Favreau, the voice cast includes Martindale and Johnny Vegas as the titular couple, with Natalie Portman and Emilia Clarke joining in as well. The movie looks like a twisted Sir Quentin Blake illustration come to life, which is exactly what "The Twits" deserves. "The Twits" arrives sometime in 2025.

Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie

When Bikini Bottom and all its denizens are suddenly scooped out of the ocean, Sandy Cheeks and SpongeBob SquarePants journey to Texas to save the town from a villainous plot. You read that correctly, Netflix is getting a SpongeBob movie — but this one is all about Sandy and her extended family. The standout voice cast includes "SpongeBob SquarePants" favorites as well as some legendary newcomers, so try to keep your jaw off the floor when you read this cast list: Carolyn Lawrence, Tom Kenny, Wanda Sykes, Clancy Brown, Bill Fagerbakke, Mr. Lawrence, Rodger Bumpass, Johnny Knoxville, Craig Robinson, Grey Delisle, Ilia Isorelys Paulino, and Matty Cardarople. The film comes from director Liza Johnson from a teleplay by Kaz and Tom Stern. I was cracking up throughout the footage shown and I can't wait to hear why SpongeBob is able to be in Texas without a water helmet on.

"Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie" arrives on August 2, 2024.

Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld

Wake up, babe! News about a new teenage girl fighting the supernatural series just dropped. "Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld" follows the titular character (voiced by executive producer Ali Wong), a Chinese-American teen living in a small Texas town, who finds out a demon king is hunting her for the supernatural powers she's been working her whole life to repress.

Fortunately, with the help of her weapons expert great-aunt and a millennia-old jiangshi (Chinese hopping vampire), Jentry must now fight an entire underworld's worth of monsters while balancing the horrors of high school. Created and showrun by Echo Wu, the series has a killer voice cast including Wong, Bowen Yang, Lori Tan Chinn, Lucy Liu, Jimmy O. Yang, Sheng Wang, and Woosung Kim, with 2D animation from Titmouse.

"Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld" debuts sometime in 2024.

Netflix looks like it's about to come for Disney's crown with "Spellbound." I'm gonna show you the synopsis, but it's the creative team behind it that's really going to make your face melt. "Spellbound follows the adventures of Ellian, the tenacious young daughter of the rulers of Lumbria who must go on a daring quest to save her family and kingdom after a mysterious spell transforms her parents into monsters." Sounds cute, yeah? Good news. It is. The animation is so stinkin' cute I wanted to scream. But hold onto your butts because here's where the magic happens.

"Spellbound" is directed by Vicky Jenson (co-director of "Shrek") with an original score from EGOT-winning composer ALAN FREAKIN' MENKIN and lyrics by Glenn Slater ("Tangled"). A Netflix film from Skydance Animation, "Spellbound" boasts an all-star voice cast led by Rachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane, and Tituss Burgess. Yeah, they're totally gunning for the Oscar with this one.

"Spellbound" premieres on November 22, 2024.

The Imaginary

Anime fans, we're eating good this year. Studio Ponoc's "The Imaginary" portrays the depths of humanity and creativity through the eyes of young Amanda and her imaginary companion, Rudger. Their fantastical adventures launched from her attic, lead them to discover a magical world of creatures and places never before seen until a sinister force threatens to destroy their imaginary world and the friendship within it. The film is directed by renowned animator Yoshiyuki Momose ("Spirited Away"), and promises to be an unforgettable adventure of love, loss, and the healing power of imagination.

The film is also written and produced by two-time Academy Award nominee Yoshiaki Nishimura ("The Tale of The Princess Kaguya," "When Marnie Was There") and the English-dub voice cast includes Louie Rudge-Buchanan, Evie Kiszel, Hayley Atwell, Sky Katz, Jeremy Swift, Kal Penn, LeVar Burton, Jane Singer, Ruby Barnhill, Roger Craig Smith, Courtenay Taylor, and Miles Nibbe. The preview for this film was overwhelmingly gorgeous, and I urge everyone still high on "The Boy and the Heron" from last year to make sure this one stays on their radar and doesn't get swallowed up by the SEO-hellscape caused by Blumhouse's "Imaginary" and John Krasinski's "IF."

"The Imaginary" debuts on July 5, 2024.

Terminator Zero

We've known about (and have been SUPER HYPE FOR) "Terminator Zero" for quite some time now, but the anime  set in the world of the greatest action franchise  ever has some MASSIVE news to share. But first, here's the synopsis:

"2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity. Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet's impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children."

Mattson Tomlin ("Project Power," "The Batman II") is the showrunner/EP/writer of the series with animation from Production IG, but the biggest reveal about the show from today's presentation is that the Terminator, as in the Terminator ... IS TIMOTHY OLYPHANT!!! I'm so excited I feel like I can snap a metal endoskeleton with my bare hands!

"Terminator Zero" premieres on August 29, 2024.

Huge announcements and first looks of new and returning shows and movies

But wait, there's more! There were a ton of really awesome announcements made with little sneak peeks that I unfortunately don't get to physically share, but here are some titles that will hopefully get you pumped:

"K-Pop: Demon Hunters"

"Jurassic World: Chaos Theory" season 2

"Tokyo Override"

"That Christmas"

"Arcane" season 2

"Big Mouth: The Final Season"

"Exploding Kittens"

"Hot Wheels Let's Race" season 2

"Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl" (NEW WALLACE & GROMIT MOVIE!)

"My Oni Girl"

"The Undervale"

"Motel Transylvania" (Yep! It's a "Hotel Transylvania" spin-off series!)

"Plankton: The Movie" (More SpongeBob!)

"Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie"

Oh, and not to bury the lede here, but new shows based on "Stranger Things," "Ghostbusters," and "Minecraft" are in the works. The "Minecraft" series is in development with WildBrain, the studio behind "Sonic Prime," "Ninjago: Dragons Rising," and "Carmen Sandiego."

That's a hell of a line-up, and we at /Film will keep you up to date with more information as it becomes available.

Glen Powell Makes a Case for Movie Stardom in Hit Man

globetrotting movies

By Richard Lawson

Glen Powell Makes a Case for Movie Stardom in ‘Hit Man

After providing such able support in movies like Top Gun: Maverick and Everybody Wants Some! , the actor Glen Powell is ready for some leading-man action. Hs EWS! director Richard Linklater has furnished him with just such an opportunity in the agreeable comedy Hit Man , which premiered here at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday. A sorta-true story about an average guy who finds himself caught in a web of crime and deception, Hit Man is a cute and clever (sometimes overbearingly so) showcase for Powell’s magnetic charm.

It’s an odd film to premiere at a fancy festival like Venice, so middle-of-the-road is its appeal. Linklater has made another of his broad comedies, not an experimental ramble like the best of his work. But the simple pleasures of Hit Man are quite welcome at this particular juncture in cinema history, in a time when star-driven genre movies that exist mostly to entertain feel in direly short supply.

Perhaps, then, this is Powell’s shot at placing himself in the rarefied company of performers who can open a movie, a roster of folks that was once quite deep but has been reduced—by the creep of I.P. dominance, among other things—to a lonely handful. He makes a persuasive case. Powell plays Gary Johnson, a New Orleans professor of philosophy who does a little work on the side helping the police ensnare folks looking to hire contract killers. A hobbyist electronic tinkerer, Gary is just a tech guy—until a sudden staffing shortage puts him into the field as a fake hit man meeting a real potential client about to incriminate themselves on tape.

This is not the sleek, globetrotting stuff of The Killer , another hit man film at Venice this year. The folks encountered by Gary, who proves surprisingly adept in the undercover role, are mostly regular people with axes to grind. They’re doing a bad thing, to be sure, but they are not sociopathic plutocrats or otherwise amoral operatives of power. Thus Linklater adds some moral shading to Gary’s successful trickery: is his guile drawing people into a crime they maybe weren’t actually going to commit?

The film introduces that ethical question, but doesn’t really dig in. It is more invested in Gary’s talent for deception, which gives Powell the opportunity to put on an array of accents and don a bunch of wigs and false teeth. He’s a creepy British assassin with a red bob, a stern cigar-smoking Russian, a good ol’ boy looking to fuck some shit up. His most successful, and enduring, persona is Ron, a cool customer who is essentially Gary with the confidence and suavity turned up. Gary’s gradual realization is that if Ron was inside him all along, then he can adopt a few of Ron’s best qualities in regular Gary life—thus leading a more active, fulfilled existence.

Powell shrewdly keeps the differences between Gary and Ron subtle, but distinct enough that a sudden switch back to Gary after many scenes of Ron arrives as an amusing shock. It’s nimble work, sexy and sweet at once. Powell does, on occasion, play things a little too slick (which is partly a problem of the script, which he co-wrote with Linklater). And it’s not terribly credible that someone with Gary’s looks and natural charisma would be such a humble wallflower. (This is a “without those glasses, you’re beautiful!” kind of movie.) But isn’t that the suspension of disbelief we have long afforded our movie stars, radiant demigods whom we’ve readily accepted as anonymous, unlucky-in-love normies?

His magnetism finds great complement in Adria Arjona , as a would-be sting target whom Gary, as Ray, dissuades from committing the crime. A risky flirtation begins, leading the film toward its mild, though effective, version of suspense. There is dark possibility here—sex and romance flourishing so adjacent to murderous ideation—but Hit Man prefers to keep things light. Powell and Arjona groove on the film’s kicky patter, tumbling in and out of bed as only movie stars can, in between scenes of zippy dialogue.

Hit Man is determined to be fun above all else, and it largely succeeds in that honorable, populist mission. It entertains, and generously pushes two game performers closer toward the movie-star pantheon. So, naturally, it arrives at Venice without a distributor—an orphan in need of a studio (or, sigh, a streamer) that will take a chance on something as audacious as a star-driven crime comedy. What a novel idea, that anyone might go to the movies to see people scheme and seduce and glow. It’s sadly been many years since Hollywood believed everybody wanted some of that.

Viva las vegas a great spring break destination.

Saturday, Apr 20 2024 by Natalie

Whether you’re young and looking for an adventure, or traveling with a family, Las Vegas is a great Spring Break destination.

Let’s take a look at some of the places everyone should have on their list to see when they make a trip to Sin City.

Welcome to Last Vegas Sign

Perhaps the most recognized feature of Las Vegas, the flashing sign welcoming visitors to Las Vegas was funded in 1959, at perhaps the heyday of Vegas glamor and glitz. These days, it’s a familiar, retro greeting for everyone who tour the Strip, the area jam packed with casinos, restaurants, party venues, and entertainment for all ages. Day or night, the party’s going on, and it’s the perfect photo op to announce your arrival!

Las Vegas: The Strip - Google Earth (StreetView)

The Venetian Casino and Resort

If you want to see a great music concert, check out the Venetian! Christina Aguilera will be there for two weeks in April, followed by Kylie Minogue, who regularly performs at the resort.

The hotel and casino is just as amazing, often making lists of best resorts and casinos in the US. Its theme hearkens back to the height of the Venetian empire, with a recreation of the Rialto Bridge, the Doge’s Palace, and other famous landmarks from the powerful empire of the Middle Ages.

Doge's Palace at the Venetian Casino and Resort (Birds Eye)

The Bellagio

The Bellagio is one of Vegas’s most famous luxury resorts, created in the style of an Italian village, complete with classical-styled sculpture and design, high-end art galleries, breathtaking botanical gardens, and more.

Bellagio Hotel & Casino (Birds Eye)

Perhaps the most famous attraction at the Bellagio are the impressive fountains, which perform free water shows choreographed with music and lighting to entertain the crowds. Designed as the focal point in an 8.5 acre man-made lake in the center of the Las Vegas desert, they are certainly impressive. In fact, they are considered one of the most talked-about attractions in the city by people around the world!

Bellagio Fountains (Birds Eye)

Eiffel Tower and Paris Hotel

The Paris Hotel is an awesome spectacle, and a lot more affordable! It was designed with the average, not high-end, visitor, in mind. But they did not skimp on awesome Parisian features. The biggest draw is the replica Eiffel Tower, which rises about 550 feet in the air. Only 1/3 as big as the original, it’s still impressive against the Las Vegas skyline.

Eiffel Tower in Paris Hotel (Birds Eye)

Other replicas on the site include the Arc de Triomphe, Louvre museum, and Paris Opera House. It’s “almost” like going to France, without crossing an ocean or needing a passport.

'Arc de Triumph' (Birds Eye)

Luxor Las Vegas

The Luxor Hotel goes all the way to another famous desert for its theme: the deserts of ancient Egypt, and the pyramids of Giza. Some years, the hotel hosts more visitors than the city on which it’s modeled! Its centerpiece is a massive pyramid, which is the actual hotel. At the top of the pyramid is a giant light called the Luxor Sky Beam, the most powerful man-made light in the world.

Like other hotels, it also has lots of entertainment, beyond cool hotel rooms and casinos. It is also known for the expansive and educational Titanic exhibit, that still impresses visitors with artifacts and historical details in a museum dedicated to the ocean, that seems a little out of place in the desert.

Luxor (Birds Eye)

The Mob Museum

Branching out a bit from the Strip and resorts, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, better known as the Mob Museum, is a really cool museum dedicated to telling the story of organized crime, and the law enforcement agents who fight that crime.

Some people don’t know this, but Las Vegas has deep ties to organized crime and mob bosses, which makes sense with all the gambling and other activities you can do there. While the connections have eased up considerably over the years, the history is colorful, and the museum is a great place to learn about law enforcement over the years in the US, and see some really cool exhibits about the most famous, and notorious, characters, in organized crime.

National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement (Google Maps)

If you’re looking to spend some time enjoying the region’s climate and scenery, you should check out Hoover Dam. The dam, blocking the Colorado River on the border between Las Vegas and Arizona, generates power for California, Nevada, and Arizona, for more than 1.25 million people.

It also generates water for crops and cities and towns in the area, coming off of Lake Mead, the man-made lake created as a result of the dam. Tourists can tour different parts of the dam, can check out the structure from the bridge at the top of the dam, or participate in water activities on Lake Mead. It’s less than an hour away from Sin City, but it feels like a completely different world.

Hoover Dam (Google Maps)

If you have the chance to tour Las Vegas, springtime is a great time to go; it’s not too hot, and there’s so much going on to keep you entertained. And if you can’t make it, this list will keep you almost as entertained.

Behind the Scenes of Dune: Part Two

Wednesday, Apr 10 2024 by Natalie

Dune: Part Two came out last month, and since then it’s broken all sorts of records, including earning over $600 million, raking in more money on opening weekend than any other film earned all year, and making way more money than even the first Dune did for its opening. Even now, it’s incredibly popular, and has fast-tracked production for the next installment of the sci-fi story.

Let’s take a look at some of the starring actors and locations from the film.

Timothée Chalamet

Making his debut more than a decade ago in Interstellar , Timothée Chalamet has become a major star, with a varied film repertoire, and credit for both artistic and blockbuster successes. At just 28, he’s already been nominated for an Oscar, and won several major accolades. And, he’s been dating celeb powerhouse Kylie Jenner for over a year now, so he’s really got it going on!

Born and bred in NYC, the dual American and French citizen bought a house in Beverly Hills in 2022. The home, formerly owned by Kate Upton and Justin Verlander, set him back about $11 million. The beautiful property has privacy-enhancing landscaping, a tennis court, pool, and great views. Inside, the four bedroom, five bathroom house has distinctive features including a fireplace that takes up an entire wall, in-home theater, wine cellar, and more. The house has been owned by several celebs in addition to Kate Upton, including Kenny G and Pete Sampras!

Since getting her start on the Disney Channel in 2010, Zendaya has been known for her beautiful, piercing eyes, and amazing acting ability. Starring in Dune is just her most recent success, she’s been in the Spider-Man franchise, indie films, television shows, and more.

She has bought a few homes in the LA area, including this gorgeous place in Encino, which offers more space and privacy than some more famous zip codes in the area. The six-bedroom home is more than 80 years old, but several renovations have kept it up-to-date, perfect for the knockout celebrity.

Zendaya's House (Google Maps)

Josh Brolin

Josh Brolin’s father has had a long career in Hollywood, but Josh took a long time to determine that he, too, wanted to be an actor. But, once he did, his career has been stellar. His acting in Dune brings to life one of the most interesting and charismatic individuals in the story, and he deserves all the praise he gets for the role.

He left Hollywood a few years ago when he bought a home in Atlanta. While he put it up for rent last month, the $3.25 million home just north of the city in the upscale neighborhood of Buckhead, has five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and 6,500 square feet of living space on 1.5 acres of land. Of course it has a gourmet kitchen, gym, theater, extra sitting and entertaining rooms, and  more.

Josh Brolin's House (Google Maps)

Wadi Rum, Jordan

Filming the desert scenes of the sci-fi film in a realistic environment was critically important to director Denis Villeneuve and his crew. They picked the Wadi Rum location in Jordan because it had both a “scary” quality and the rocks mixed among the sand described so vividly in the books. And just like on the planet of Arrakis, the area is known for deadly windstorms, but fortunately doesn’t have any sandworms.

A wadi is an area that is desert except when it rains; then it’s flooded with rushing rainwater that helps give it an eerie and unique landscape formation ideal for an other-worldy tale such as Dune .

Wadi Run - The Valley of the Moon (StreetView)

Liwa Oasis, Abu Dhabi

While the wadi was great for some angles, the sand dunes in the book were best filmed on site in Abu Dhabi, where the vastness of the desert spread out before the camera, giving the viewer a visual feast of Arrakis in all its dangerous beauty.

Filming wasn’t so hard; the crew and actors stayed at a resort at the oasis, an area of water and vegetation that sprouts up in the desert. In many ways, it helped them feel more in character, and unified them as a team, far away from the distractions that might normally overwhelm a movie crew.

Liwa Oasis ("Star Wars") (StreetView)

Ålesund, Norway

About a world away from the desert of the Middle East, Ålesund on the coast of Norway, was the perfect setting for the water-rich world of Caladan. The bays and inlets, as well as the dramatic cliffs, were perfect for portraying the paradise Paul Atreides left behind to follow the directive of the emperor, and eventually fulfill hundreds of years of prophesy and his own destiny.

Ålesund is a small but beautiful coastal city that attracts visitors for its Art Nouveau architecture, great river and ocean kayaking, and amazing hiking.

View of Ålesund from Mount Aksla (StreetView)

It’s so fun to look at where the stars live and worked while making both Dune films, it only makes us want more! Because the first two installments of the books-turned-movies were so successful, it’s all but guaranteed that there will be more breathtaking films to carry on the story in the next few years. And we can’t hardly wait!

Famous Irish-Americans

Sunday, Mar 17 2024 by Natalie

Today is St. Patrick’s Day, when everyone is Irish! While the holiday is celebrated around the world, people in the US take the holiday, and perhaps the excuse to drink a little extra beer, to the next level.

In honor of the day, let’s take a look at some famous Irish-Americans.

John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy might be one of the most famous Irish-Americans. In fact, at the time of his campaign for president in 1960, some people hesitated to vote for him due to ethnic and religious discrimination against Irish-Americans.

However, Kennedy never shied away from his heritage. In fact, when he was president, he took a historic trip to Ireland and visited several places, including his ancestral home in Dunganstown, in Wexford. His great-great-great grandfather was born here, and the Kennedy family still owns the property.

The Kennedy Homestead, ancestral home of the Kennedy clan (StreetView)

Taking his Irish heritage seriously, Kennedy and his wife Jackie named their beautiful Virginia estate Wexford, after his ancestral home. Sadly, the home on the 166-acre farm outside Washington, DC was completed only a few weeks before he was assassinated in November 1963.

The home, with five bedrooms and five bathrooms, had been designed by Jackie herself as a retreat for the family, and was a perfect getaway for the talented equestrian. Ronald and Nancy Reagan rented the home during their presidential transition in late 1980. It sold a few years ago for just under $3 million, well below the $4+million asking price.

John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy's House (Former) (Bing Maps)

Barack Obama

You might not realize it, but Barack Obama has Irish heritage! A true American in the sense that his heritage includes many waves of immigrants, his great-great-great-grandfather came the US in 1850, one of millions who fled economic hardship and chased the hope of a better life across the ocean.

Obama and his wife Michelle own several homes across the US, but after they left the White House in 2017, they took up residence just a few miles away, in the tony Kalorama neighborhood of DC. They first rented, then bought, this gorgeous brick mansion, for about $8 million. Jeff Bezos lives in the neighborhood, along with several diplomats, the Kushners, and more. The house has more than 8,000 square feet; plenty of room to enjoy their privacy after eight years in the limelight of the presidency.

Barack & Michelle Obama's Post-White House House (Birds Eye)

Alec Baldwin

A man who has reigned in Hollywood for decades, and even portrayed a president on television, Alec Baldwin is one of the most famous Irish-Americans. He’s spoken several times about how his Irish Catholic upbringing influences him now, and even named his daughter Ireland!

Alec and his wife Hilaria live with their seven kids in Vermont, having moved here in 2022, leaving behind the Hamptons in New York, and taking up a more rural, family-centered life up north. The 55-acre estate has a main house listed as having three bedrooms, but there’s got to be plenty of space for seven kids among the 3,600 square feet of living space. And if it’s not enough, there’s an 1,800 square foot guest house!

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey (just like her big sister Emily) is another famous Irish-American actor. She grew up in Los Angeles, with a director dad an actress mother; her career choice is basically a family business.

In 2019, she started dating another famous sibling, Jonathan Scott, who works with his identical twin brother Drew in the property business. The two, along with Zooey’s kids from a previous marriage, bought a gorgeous home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles in 2020. They dropped a stunning $9.5 million for the 6,500 square-foot home on a one-acre lot. It’s in a great location, has an amazing yard that includes a pool and tennis court, and gorgeous, spunky interior that perfectly fits the couple’s personalities.

Michael Flatley

While everyone knows Michael Flatley, the famous Irish dancer, what may be a surprise is that he was actually born in the US, not the Emerald Isle! His parents both emigrated to the US, where they met at an Irish dance hall (of course) and got married. They passed their love of Irish dance to their son, and the rest is history.

He got his break on the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, and created a dance troupe that toured the world for decades. He set a Guinness World Record (fitting for an Irishman) for the fastest feet, tapping 32 times per second!

With a remarkable estimated net worth of more than $350 million, he retired to an impressive Irish mansion called Castlehyde house. It’s reported to be more than 50,000 square feet, and has a long and storied history. While he’s tried to sell it from time to time, and can’t live there right now due to poor repairs after a fire, he’s committed to keeping it and getting it fixed.

Michael Flatley’s House (Google Maps)

The Irish have a strong heritage in the US, and they have done so much to make the country a wonderful melting pot of culture, tradition, and experiences. On St. Patrick’s Day, have a drink to celebrate the Irish in all of us, and may the Irish blessing prove true for you:

May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow, and may trouble avoid you wherever you go.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The pink house where Muhammad Ali grew up dreaming of boxing fame — and where hundreds of fans gathered for an emotional send-off as his funeral procession passed by decades later — is up for sale.

The two-bedroom, one-bathroom house in Louisville was converted into a museum that offered a glimpse into the formative years of the boxing champion and humanitarian known worldwide as The Greatest. The house went on the market Tuesday along with two neighboring homes — one was turned into a welcome center-gift shop and the other was meant to become a short-term rental.

The owners are asking $1.5 million for the three properties. Finding a buyer willing to maintain Ali’s childhood home as a museum would be “the best possible result,” co-owner George Bochetto said.

“This is a part of Americana,” said Bochetto, a Philadelphia attorney and former Pennsylvania state boxing commissioner. “This is part of our history. And it needs to be treated and respected as such.”

The museum opened for tours shortly before Ali’s death in 2016 . Bochetto and his business partner at the time renovated the frame house to how it looked when Ali — known then as Cassius Clay — lived there with his parents and younger brother.

“You walk into this house ... you’re going back to 1955, and you’re going to be in the middle of the Clay family home,” Bochetto told The Associated Press during a 2016 interview.

Using old photos, the developers replicated the home’s furnishings, appliances, artwork and even its pink exterior from Ali’s days living there. The museum featured videos focused on the story of Ali’s upbringing, not his storied boxing career.

“To me, that’s the bigger story and the more important story,” Bochetto said in an interview last week.

Ali got his start in boxing after his bicycle was stolen . Wanting to report the crime, the 12-year-old Ali was introduced to Joe Martin, a police officer who doubled as a boxing coach at a local gym. Ali told Martin he wanted to whip the culprit. The thief was never found, nor was the bike, but Ali became a regular in Martin’s gym.

Ali lived in the home when he left for the 1960 Olympics. He returned as a gold medal winner, launching a career that made him one of the world’s most recognizable figures as a three-time heavyweight boxing champion and globetrotting humanitarian.

The home became a worldwide focal point on the day of Ali’s burial, when hundreds of people lined the street in front of the house as his hearse and funeral procession slowly passed by.

Despite its high-profile debut, the museum ran into financial troubles and closed less than two years after opening. The museum is situated in a western Louisville neighborhood several miles from downtown, where the Muhammad Ali Center preserves his humanitarian and boxing legacies .

As efforts to reopen the childhood museum languished, offers to move the 1,200-square-foot (111-square-meter) house to Las Vegas, Philadelphia and even Saudi Arabia were turned down, Bochetto said.

“I wouldn’t do that because it’s an important piece of Louisville history, Kentucky history and I think it needs to stay right where it is,” he said.

Las Vegas real estate investor Jared Weiss bought the Ali childhood house — then rundown and vacant — in 2012 for $70,000 with plans to restore it. Three years later, Weiss formed a partnership with Bochetto, who acquired a half interest in the project. Both were avid fans of Ali, and they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the restoration project. They also purchased the two neighboring homes, financed a documentary, subsidized museum operations and incurred expenses for all three properties. Weiss has since died and his wife is the project’s co-owner, Bochetto said.

Now, Bochetto said he’s hoping they’ll find a buyer with the “marketing and operational know-how” to make the museum a success.

“I want to make sure that it continues in that fashion and never goes back to where it’s abandoned or dilapidated,” he said. “That should never have happened.”

The South Tower Pool is one of the many amenities at Continuum.

Luxury condominium properties in the most popular markets throughout the U.S. cater more and more deep-pocketed buyers who invest in their apartments as a second or third home for seasonal residency.

South Florida is a prime destination for this trend. Condo buildings here are no longer simple dwellings- they’re sprawling “resort-like” parcels of land for globetrotting owners and snowbirds who live there for six months or so a year.

The Continuum in Miami Beach is a luxury residential community that has stayed ahead of the curve by reinventing itself with a hospitality value proposition that surpasses any residential building in need of a marquee brand affiliation to stay relevant.

For more than twenty years, the world’s most affluent and discerning families and CEOs have revered the beachfront community as the top choice of primary and seasonal home within the historic South of Fifth neighborhood.

Located on 13 acres of manicured oceanfront real estate with unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean, the twin towers of the Continuum represents the largest parcel of oceanfront property in Miami Beach.

It’s akin to a luxury retreat, with amenities that include three pools, a beach club, private restaurant, tennis complex, a Sporting Club and Rejuvaline MedSpa offering state-of-the-art treatments that includes in-home IV Therapies - a luxury building amenity growing in popularity, as recently reported by The New York Times .

Continuum's lap pool.

Continuum continues to establish itself as the vanguard in the luxury condominium market by becoming one of the few residential developments in the world to be recognized by Forbes Travel Guide . Known for creating the Five-Star rating system for hotels, Forbes Travel Guide has long been the global authority on luxury service.

We caught up with Rishi Idnani, a preeminent hospitality industry leader and Managing Director at the Continuum, to ask how luxury homeownership has changed over the years.

What does luxury hospitality mean to you ?

Luxury hospitality has transformed considerably since I started my career at Ritz Carlton Residences more than 14 years ago. Thinking for the resident and anticipating their every need before they do goes a long way. Performing the extra mile with a personal touch and developing lasting relationships with our residents is also something I consider to be a defining component. Knowing how a resident likes their coffee in the morning, for example, still remains a tiny but meaningful element of luxury hospitality.

How has you and your team remained competitive among the growing landscape of branded residences?

We’ve always believed in a holistic approach at the Continuum. Even before the pandemic, wellness has remained an important part of our residents’ lifestyle and we aim to cater to their growing needs in this area. The latest and state-of-the-art amenities enable our residents to stay on the property without the need to seek the services they want outside of our community. Whether it’s a specific class at our Sporting Club, the newest IV Therapy provided by the spa or the latest gourmet dish at The Patio Restaurant – we always like to stay on top of emerging trends and the whims of our residents.

What makes the Continuum South Florida’s premier resort-style oceanfront condominium residences?

In addition to our comprehensive range of amenities across 13 acres of beachfront property, we’ve really gone above and beyond to offer memorable and unique experiences year-round for our residents that sets us apart from many other condominium communities.

Our concierge program, led by our Lifestyle Director, Jacqui Gonzalez, continues to be highly advanced. Residents have enjoyed wine tasting excursions in Portugal and exclusive six-course dinners at our restaurant curated by the world’s leading chefs, as part of our annual partnership with the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, to specialized yoga classes held by internationally renowned guest instructors. These are just a few example experiences residents are offered that makes the Continuum so special and unique.

Can you share your biggest challenge for the property in recent years?

The Continuum sits on the largest parcel of oceanfront property in Miami Beach, which makes the development exposed to nature’s elements. These often severe coastal conditions take their toll on the grounds and building structures over time, so we’ve had to monitor this constantly and make the necessary adjustments and improvements to the foundation in order to ensure the long-term safety and overall stability of the entire estate. This has been our number one challenge and number one priority.

What does it mean to be recognized by Forbes Travel Guide after more than two decades?

We are thrilled to be associated with Forbes Travel Guide as the global authority on luxury service. The entire Continuum management team prides itself on striving to be the best in world-class residential hospitality. The comprehensive luxury service program being put in place through the advanced training of our staff will undoubtedly result in a noticeable and elevated experience for our valued residents.
