About Hamilton on Broadway

Video & photos.

A revolutionary story of passion, unstoppable ambition, and the dawn of a new nation.

Hamilton is the epic saga that follows the rise of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton as he fights for honor, love, and a legacy that would shape the course of a nation. Based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography and set to a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway, Hamilton has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. Hamilton features book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire. In addition to its 11 Tony Awards, it has won Grammy®, Olivier Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors.

Hamilton

Everything you need to know about 'Hamilton' on Broadway

Here's your guide to all things Hamilton , which went from a beach read to a musical that blew audiences away around the world.

Diep Tran

How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman become the subject of a bestselling musical that also becomes a cultural phenomenon?

Hamilton features a book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who was inspired by a book he had read about Alexander Hamilton. Through reading Ron Chernow's book about Hamilton, Miranda saw someone who was a poor immigrant, who hustled his way into becoming one of America's Founding Fathers — someone who didn't throw away his shot. Miranda saw parallels between Hamilton's story and that of contemporary rappers, who use their words to climb the American social ladder.

The life of America's first secretary of the treasury may seem like an atypical subject for a musical. But what really elevates Hamilton is its music, an anachronistic mix of hip-hop, rap, pop, jazz, and Broadway showtunes.

That music is delivered by a diverse cast. The tagline of Hamilton has always been: "America then told by America now." People of color play all of the lead roles in the musical, in a nod to how non-white faces have always been left out of the history books. This intentional casting gives Hamilton a contemporary edge, making the static people in the history books more immediate and relatable to today's audiences.

What is Hamilton about?

Hamilton features book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. He was inspired by Ron Chernow's biography of the "$10 founding father" Alexander Hamilton.

The sung-through musical follows Hamilton from his early life as a poor orphan in the Caribbean, to his ascendency as the right-hand man of George Washington, to his death in an infamous duel with Aaron Burr. But the musical is not just about Hamilton. It also contrasts his life with that of his friend-turned-rival Burr, and how the two Revolutionary War soldiers became enemies.

But the music of Hamilton isn't just your typical showtunes. The score for Hamilton draws from hip-hop and R&B and even includes multiple rap battles. And the lyrics come fast and furious. It's Evita meets Les Misérables and 1776 , by way of Notorious B.I.G.

Where is Hamilton playing?

Hamilton is playing at the Richard Rodgers Theatre , at 226 West 46th Street between Broadway and Eighth Avenue. The theatre opened in 1925 and is named after the famed composer Richard Rodgers (one half of Rodgers and Hammerstein, with Oscar Hammerstein II). Lin-Manuel Miranda's debut Broadway musical In the Heights also played at the Richard Rodgers from 2008 to 2011.

How long is Hamilton ?

Hamilton runs at 2 hours and 55 minutes, with one intermission. It is longer than your average Broadway musical, so it is recommended you eat beforehand.

What days is Hamilton playing?

Hamilton plays eight performances a week at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The show usually runs twice a day on Wednesday and Saturday and is closed on Monday. For the complete performance schedule and showtimes, please visit the Hamilton page to learn more.

When did Hamilton premiere?

Hamilton was inspired by a beach read. In 2008, Lin-Manuel Miranda was on vacation while performing in his hit musical In The Heights . Miranda picked up a copy of Ron Chernow's biography Alexander Hamilton . As Miranda read the book, he related to Hamilton, who, like Miranda, was a prolific writer. He began to imagine Hamilton's life as a musical. Miranda begins composing songs inspired by Hamilton's life. He calls the songs The Hamilton Mixtape , which Miranda later released as a companion album to the  Hamilton  Broadway cast recording.

  • 2009: Miranda performs a song from The Hamilton Mixtape in front of President Barack Obama at the White House Evening of Poetry, Music and the Spoken Word. The song will eventually become the opening number for Hamilton .
  • 2013: The Hamilton Mixtape gets its first workshop at Vassar College and New York Stage and Film Powerhouse Theater. Miranda asks Thomas Kail, who directed In the Heights , to direct the workshop. The workshop contains the eventual first act of Hamilton and three songs from the second act. Miranda plays Hamilton . Daveed Diggs and Christopher Jackson (who was also in In the Heights ) also star — they will eventually star in the show on Broadway, too.
  • 2015: Hamilton premieres off Broadway at The Public Theater on January 20, under Kail's direction. The run sells out immediately. The production is partially financed by Broadway producer Jeffrey Seller, who produced In the Heights . The entirety of the Off-Broadway cast moves to Broadway. Later that same year, on July 13, Hamilton opens on Broadway, where it runs to this day.
  • 2016: Hamilton opens its Chicago production. That production runs for four years and closes in 2020.
  • 2017: Hamilton launches its first American tour, beginning in San Francisco. That same year, a separate tour launches in San Francisco. Hamilton also begins performances on the West End at the Victoria Palace Theatre, where it runs to this day.
  • 2021: Hamilton begins performances in Australia at the Sydney Lyric Theatre. It runs there to this day, with another production in Melbourne at Her Majesty's Theatre.
  • 2022: Hamilton opens a sit-down production in Los Angeles at the Pantages Theatre. Hamilton will also open its first foreign-language production in Germany in September at the  Operettenhaus in Hamburg.

Who wrote Hamilton ?

Hamilton features book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Prior to Hamilton, Miranda had made waves on Broadway with In the Heights, which he also wrote and starred in. His other musical credits includes writing Spanish lyrics to the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story . His improvisational hip-hop group Freestyle Love Supreme also headlined its own Broadway show from 2019 to 2020, and 2021 to 2022.

Miranda is the winner of a Pulitzer Prize, three Tony Awards, three Grammy Awards, two Emmy Awards, and two Olivier Awards. Miranda has also been nominated for two Academy Awards, for writing songs for the Disney films Moana and Encanto . Miranda has also dipped his toe into film directing, making his feature directorial debut with the movie musical tick, tick... BOOM!

Hamilton characters

Though the musical is titled Hamilton , the show is filled with memorable characters from American history.

  • Alexander Hamilton: A hot-headed, ambitious, and impulsive man who always writes "like he's running out of time." He is the first treasury secretary of the United States. Lin-Manuel Miranda originated the role of Hamilton.
  • Aaron Burr: Hamilton's friend-turned-rival. Unlike Hamilton, Burr is more reserved and cautious, but no less ambitious — he wants to be in "the room where it happens." Leslie Odom Jr. originated the role of Burr, and other notable actors who have played the role include Wayne Brady , Joshua Henry, and Brandon Victor Dixon.
  • Eliza Hamilton: Hamilton's wife Eliza is romantic, loyal, and loving. Phillipa Soo originated the role of Eliza, and another notable actor who has played the role is Denée Benton.
  • Angelica Schuyler: Angelica is Eliza's sister who has feelings for Hamilton, but steps aside out of love for Eliza, her own ambition, and social pressure. Renée Elise Goldsberry originated the role of Angelica, but other actors who have played the role include Mandy Gonzalez and Karen Olivo.
  • Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson: These two roles are usually played by one actor. Marquis de Lafayette is a Frenchman who fights in the Revolutionary War and is loyal to Hamilton, while Thomas Jefferson is pompous and is one of Hamilton's enemies. Daveed Diggs originated both roles, and another notable actor who has played the roles is James Monroe Iglehart.
  • George Washington: The first U.S. president, Washington is a man with a strict moral code who is always aware that "history has its eyes" on him. Christopher Jackson originated the role.
  • John Laurens and Philip Hamilton: These two roles are usually played by one actor. John is Hamilton's close friend, while Philip is Hamilton's son. Both are confrontational and not afraid of duels. Anthony Ramos originated the role, and Jordan Fisher has also played the role.
  • Hercules Mulligan and James Madison: These two roles are usually played by one actor. Hercules is rambunctious and loves to party, while James is reserved and hates Hamilton. Okieriete Onaodowan originated the role.
  • King George III: The beleaguered King of England who treats America like a lover that got away. Jonathan Groff originated the role on Broadway, but other actors who've played the role include Brian d'Arcy James, Andrew Rannells, and Rory O'Malley.
  • Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds: These two roles are usually played by one actor. Peggy is the younger sister of Angelica and Eliza, while Maria is the woman with whom Hamilton has an affair. Jasmine Cephas Jones originated the role.

Major productions of Hamilton

Hamilton blew onto the Broadway scene like a hurricane and proceeded to blow audiences away around the country and the world. With every stop, Hamilton tickets sold out within hours, a rarity for musicals. You might say that the show is non-stop!

  • 2015 Off-Broadway production: This was the first major production of Hamilton . The cast in this production went on to star in the Broadway production, with the exception of Brian d'Arcy James, who played King George III but had to step away when the show transferred to Broadway. He was replaced by Jonathan Groff, though James did eventually play the role on Broadway.
  • 2015 Broadway production: Miranda made minor changes from when Hamilton was off Broadway to when it premiered on Broadway. Most notably, the song "One Last Time," which was originally called "One Last Ride," was shortened. He also rewrote Hamilton's death scene. The original cast recording of Hamilton is certified six times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, making it the highest-selling musical cast recording of all time.
  • 2019 Puerto Rico production: Lin-Manuel Miranda played Hamilton again for three weeks at the Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center in Puerto Rico. Miranda has roots on the island: His family has a restaurant and cafe there, with a merch shop called TeeRico. One of Miranda's Tony Awards is also on display in Puerto Rico, as well as the Platinum Record that the Hamilton  cast album received.
  • 2017 West End production: The West End production of Hamilton was produced by Cameron Mackintosh (of The Phantom of the Opera ).
  • 2021 and 2022 Australia productions: Hamilton currently has two productions running in Australia: one in Sydney, which opened in March 2021, and one in Melbourne, which opened in March 2022.
  • 2022 German production: Hamilton has not been translated into a foreign language until now, when a September 2022 engagement was scheduled at the Operettenhaus in Hamburg. Miranda told fans via Twitter that "it's been a painstaking process translating the show, but you haven't lived until you've heard 'Satisfied' rapped in German."

Celebrities who have performed in Hamilton

Some shows have celebrities who act in them, and other shows are celebrity makers themselves. Hamilton is the latter, with many of its original cast members going on to become stars.

  • Lin-Manuel Miranda: The creator and star of Hamilton was a musical theatre darling before, but Hamilton made him into a bonafide celebrity. After writing Hamilton , Miranda went on to a robust relationship with Disney, starring in Mary Poppins Returns  and writing music for the Disney films Moana and Encanto .
  • Leslie Odom Jr.: After playing Aaron Burr in Hamilton , Odom Jr. went on to play singer Sam Cooke in the film One Night in Miami... , for which he was nominated for an Oscar, a SAG Award, and Golden Globe Award.
  • Daveed Diggs: After playing Thomas Jefferson/Marquis de Lafayette in Hamilton, Diggs went on to lead his own television show: Snowpiercer . He's also set to play Sebastian in the upcoming live-action remake of  The Little Mermaid.
  • Anthony Ramos: After playing John Laurens and Philip Hamilton, Anthony Ramos played the lead role in the film adaptation of Miranda's musical In the Heights . He received a Golden Globe nomination.
  • Jasmine Cephas Jones: After playing Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds, Jasmine Cephas Jones went on to win an Emmy Award and lead her own television show: Blindspotting .
  • Jonathan Groff: He played King George III on Broadway, though Groff was already a celebrity when he starred in Hamilton,  having appeared onscreen in  Glee  and as the voice of Kristoff in the  Frozen  film series. He's also a two-time Tony Award nominee.
  • Ariana DeBose: DeBose was in the ensemble of Hamilton , where she notably played the Bullet that kills Hamilton. After the show, she appeared in onscreen musicals like The Prom  film and the Schmigadoon!  TV series. She also plays Anita in the 2021 film remake of West Side Story , which has earned her a Golden Globe Award, a SAG Award, a BAFTA Award, and an Oscar nomination.

Onscreen adaptations of Hamilton

Hamilton was filmed in 2016 with the original Broadway cast. Disney then purchased the distribution rights for the filmed version of Hamilton for an eye-popping $75 million. In 2020, after the original Broadway cast had long left the show and all theatres in the U.S. were shut down amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the filmed version of Hamilton was released on Disney+.

The filmed Hamilton performance was nominated for all of the major screen awards, including the Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, Golden Globes, and the SAG Awards. The movie won a special award from the American Film Institute Awards, a Critics' Choice Television Awards, an Emmy Award, a Creative Arts Emmy Award, and a Producers Guild of America Award.

Fun facts about Hamilton

Whether you're a new Hamil-fan or one that's been around since The Hamilton Mixtape , these fun facts will blow you all away.

  • For a show about America's first treasury secretary, it was fitting that Hamilton made back its $12.5 million investment in under a year. This is a feat considering that a majority of Broadway shows do not make back the money that producers put into the show. Since its premiere in 2015, Hamilton has consistently sold out on Broadway, with its most expensive ticket going for $1,150 at one point — a Broadway record.
  • All musicals have songs that are left on the cutting room floor. Many of those songs never see the light of day — but not so in Hamilton . The album The Hamilton Mixtape , which contains remixes and covers of Hamilton songs, also contains songs that were cut from the show, including "Congratulations" and "Cabinet Battle 3." Miranda has also released cut songs from Hamilton  separately, which he called HamilDrops .
  • The fastest rap ever written for Broadway is found in the  Hamilton  song "Guns and Ships." There, the Marquis de Lafayette raps 6.3 words per second. Hamilton overall is a word-filled musical. According to FiveThirtyEight, Hamilton contains 20,520 words, with an average of 144 words per minute. The show would last about six hours if it were sung at a traditional musical theatre speed.
  • Hamilton is a veritable lyrical Easter egg. Lin-Manuel Miranda shows off his musical chops by writing songs that reference previously written songs from various genres. For instance, George Washington calls himself the "model of a modern Major General" in "Right Hand Man," a reference to The Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan. The "Ten Duel Commandments" is inspired by the song "Ten Crack Commandments" by Biggie Smalls. In "Cabinet Battle No. 2," Thomas Jefferson says, "If you don't know, now you know," quoting Notorious B.I.G.'s rap song "Juicy."
  • Following criticism that Hamilton minimized the roles that the Founding Fathers played in perpetuating slavery, the second act opener of Hamilton was changed in 2021. The song portrays Thomas Jefferson coming back to his plantation Monticello, where he interacts with his slaves, including Sally Hemings. Prior, the interactions were playful but in the new choreography, Hemings turns pointedly away from Jefferson.

The home of Broadway in the Hollywood Area

VIEW UPCOMING SHOWS AT THE HOLLYWOOD PANTAGES THEATRE

BIH Footer_Transparent.png

In the heart of Hollywood, on Hollywood Boulevard, right down the block from Vine Street, stands the Hollywood Pantages Theatre. It's a fitting location: The Pantages has become one of the greatest landmarks of Hollywood, signifying both the glorious past and adventuresome future of the world's entertainment capital.

The Hollywood Pantages has a history as grand and diverse as the stage and screen fare which audiences have flocked to enjoy there for half a century. These days it's one of Los Angeles' leading homes of legitimate theatre (the five highest-grossing weeks in L.A.'s theatrical history were all shows at the Pantages) and a favorite "location" for tv shows, movies and music videos. In the past, it has been a movie house, with live vaudeville acts between features as well as the site of many gala premieres and "spectaculars." For ten years the Hollywood Pantages Theatre was the home of the glittering Academy Awards Presentations.

While the use of the Hollywood Pantages Theatre may have changed over the years, the theatre does not appear all that different today. After several touch-ups over the years, the Hollywood Boulevard showplace was renovated at the turn of the 21st century to recapture its 1930 look and luxury. When the theatre reopened in September 2000, some 300 people had repainted nearly every inch of the theatre, restored its outer lobby and missing chandeliers, refurbished its walls and prepared it for the new century.

About Hamilton on Broadway

Come join the revolution at Hamilton , Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Pulitzer, Tony, and Grammy-winning blockbuster musical that turned the Broadway world upside down. Get Hamilton tickets on TodayTix and be in the room where it happens.

Don’t throw away your shot to catch one of the biggest Broadway hits in years. Not only did Hamilton join the small group of Pulitzer Prize-winning musicals, but the show earned a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations and 11 wins, including Best Musical, Best Direction, and Best Choreography. Hamilton shook up Broadway by telling an 18th-century story with 21st-century hip-hop and rap music, and casting a racially diverse ensemble to reflect how America looks today. It’s no wonder New York Theatre Guide called Hamilton “a magnificent tapestry where all the elements of theatre are called upon to be their very best,” but perhaps The New York Times sums it up best: “Yes, it really is that good.”

The Hamilton musical showcases the man behind the face on the $10 bill. This epic show follows Alexander Hamilton’s rise from nothing to become George Washington’s right-hand man, America’s first Secretary of the Treasury, and friend-turned-enemy of Aaron Burr – the man who would eventually kill him in an infamous duel.

The non-stop success of Hamilton in New York shows no signs of letting up. Get your hip-hop history on and get Hamilton tickets on TodayTix now.

See it if you have a pulse.

Don’t see it if you're crazy not to.

DMQ

See it if you're familiar with and like the cast album. The show is almost entirely the album. If you don't know the music first, you may get lost.

Don’t see it if you're not into hip hop or are turned off by a lack of good parts for women in theatre. Out of only three women, two play clichés.

Ninwall

See it if This show redefines musical theater with it's clever hip hop music, intelligent lyrics and multicultural casting against conventional type

Don’t see it if You don't like musical theater or history

Mama Rose

See it if you are interested in the skinny on Hamilton's life - including his affairs. If you love rap music and want to see what the BUZZ is about.

Don’t see it if your not a rap fan. (Sadly, the homage to rap artist were over my head & the band drowned out many of the clever lyrics). Sat Mezz 2nd row.

More information about Hamilton on Broadway

Surrounding Hamilton in the musical are plenty of real-life historical figures: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, the Marquis de Lafayette, and more. They make mischief throughout the show as they navigate the behemoth task of founding a new country and creating a government.

Miranda was first inspired to write an Alexander Hamilton musical in 2008 after reading Ron Chernow’s 700-page biography of the Founding Father on vacation. Miranda had just won the Best Musical Tony Award for In the Heights that year, so then-President Barack Obama invited him to perform a song from the show at the 2009 White House Poetry Jam. Instead, Miranda surprised everyone by busting out an early version of his budding musical’s opening number.

The rest, as they say, is history. Hamilton premiered off Broadway at The Public Theater in 2015, transferring later that year to the Richard Rodgers Theatre. For writing Hamilton's book, music, and lyrics, Miranda would become a household name.

It seemed ludicrous at first, but to Miranda, Alexander Hamilton embodied hip-hop. Hamilton director Thomas Kail later explained in an interview: “You have someone born into very difficult circumstances — profound poverty, no parents, no support — who used words to elevate himself out of those circumstances, and then died violently because of those words. That’s a classic hip-hop story. It’s the story of Tupac or Big.”

What to watch for

  • Miranda initially conceived Hamilton as a record called The Hamilton Mixtape , but Kail encouraged him to develop a full musical. The Hamilton Mixtape was later released as a companion album to the show.
  • In the Heights , about a small community in New York’s Washington Heights, has lots of parallels with Hamilton . Miranda’s longtime collaborators Kail and Andy Blankenbuehler ( Hamilton ’s choreographer) were involved in that production, and In the Heights also played at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
  • The show has real cred in the music industry: Questlove and Black Thought of The Roots executive produced the show’s original cast recording.
  • Hamilton is full of homages to other shows. The lyric “Nobody needs to know” comes directly from Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years . George Washington’s line “I’m the model of a modern major general” is from Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance . Hamilton also quotes a line from Macbeth : "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day."
  • Hamilton made history musicals cool and fresh, but Miranda’s isn’t the first musical about the American Revolution. His show is predated by the 1969 Best Musical winner 1776 , which follows John Adams as he tries to convince his fellow politicians to declare independence from Britain.

Korean talents shine on Broadway, paving way for greater diversity

W hat do Tony Award-winning designer Linda Cho, the captivating Ruthie Ann Miles of "Sweeney Todd" and newcomer Hwang Joo-min of "& Juliet" have in common? They are part of an expanding circle of talents of Korean descent or origin who are transforming Broadway, signaling a shift toward greater inclusivity and diversity.

Achievements in technical fields

The technical side of Broadway has seen remarkable Korean talents making their mark.

The Seoul-born Korean American designer Linda Cho won her second Tony Award for Best Costume Design in a Musical for "The Great Gatsby," produced by Korean Shin Chun-soo, Sunday (local time). Her designs, which vividly capture the glitz and glamour of 1920s New York, have been lauded for bringing the essence of the era to life. Cho's first Tony came from her work in "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" in 2014.

Joining her in recognition, Hana S. Kim, alongside Brian MacDevitt, won the Tony for Best Lighting Design in a Musical for their work in "The Outsiders," where she worked as a projection designer to bring the gritty imagery of the iconic American novel to the stage.

Jiyoun Chang was also nominated for Best Lighting Design in a Play for her work in "Stereophonic," which won Best Play.

These achievements are part of a longer history of Korean success on Broadway, dating back to Willa Kim. Kim was a Korean American designer who first broke ground for Asians at the Tony Awards, winning the Tony for Best Costume Design in a Musical in 1981 for "Sophisticated Ladies" and again in 1991 for "The Will Rogers Follies," becoming the first Asian to win two Tonys.

Dazzling on stage

The narratives on stage have evolved significantly as well, moving away from confining Asian actors to stereotypical roles in shows such as "Miss Saigon" and "The King and I." With the advent of "color-blind" casting, more doors have opened for actors of diverse backgrounds, including Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI).

Miles, a half-Korean half-American actor, has been particularly notable. She won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Lady Thiang in "The King and I" in 2015 and received acclaim for her portrayal of the beggar woman in the recent revival of "Sweeney Todd." At the 2021 Tony Awards, Miles honored her heritage by donning a purple and white hanbok, or traditional Korean dress.

Netflix's "Emily in Paris" star Ashley Park also gained recognition on Broadway with roles such as Tuptim in "The King and I" in 2015 and Gretchen Wieners in "Mean Girls" in 2018, earning a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Jin Ha, known for playing Solomon Baek in Apple TV+'s "Pachinko," made history as the first Asian to play King George in “Hamilton” and originated the role of Song Liling in the play "M. Butterfly" on Broadway in 2017. He recently appeared in Stephen Sondheim's final musical "Here He Are."

Grace Yoo, who plays Worker and understudies Eurydice in Broadway's "Hadestown," shared her making of kimchi fried rice as a post-show snack on the show's social media in honor of AAPI Heritage Month. In the current production of "Hamilton," Stephanie Jae Park portrays Eliza Hamilton, while Marcus Shane, a Korean adoptee, stars in "Aladdin" and Mikayla Renfrow, of Korean and Japanese descent, is understudy for Velma Kelly in "Chicago" after roles in "Wicked" and "Aladdin."

Among this season's new shows, Christine Heesun Hwang appears as a swing in "Suffs" and Sun Kim, a Korean-born dancer and choreographer, adds her talent to "Cabaret" as one of the prologue dancers. Jimin Moon starred in the short-lived "Lempicka," while veteran actor Raymond J. Lee takes on the role of JJ in "The Heart of Rock and Roll."

While many performers are Korean Americans born or raised in the U.S., Hwang Joo-min of "& Juliet" achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first native Korean to land a non-Asian specific principal role on Broadway in April 2023. Despite joining Broadway later in his career in his 30s, Hwang, who is understudy for Francois while in the show's ensemble, brought a fresh perspective to his portrayal the French boy who engages with Juliet in the Max Martin jukebox musical that reinterprets Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet."

Hwang spoke about the solidarity among Korean actors on Broadway during his interview with The Korea Times.

"It's not easy to catch each other on stage because of our similar schedules, but when we do see each other in the streets, we cheer each other on. We're all doing so well and it's important that we continue to excel so that producers are encouraged to hire more Korean actors,” Hwang said.

Along with Hwang, there is another cast member of Korean descent in "& Juliet." Justin David Sullivan, playing May, is half-Korean, half-Mexican and non-binary who notably declined Tony Award eligibility against the awards' gendered categories in 2023.

Behind-the-scenes contributions

While actors often receive the spotlight, the force behind them includes producers and creative teams, where Koreans are also leaving their stamp.

Producer Shin has been active on Broadway for over a decade, with his latest production "The Great Gatsby" becoming a standout success, joining the prestigious $1 million club for its weekly box office gross for nine consecutive weeks since its April opening.

CJ ENM, a Korean entertainment powerhouse, has also made its mark by co-producing hit shows such as " Kinky Boots ," " MJ the Musical " and " Moulin Rouge! " This involvement underscores the growing influence of Korean producers in global theater productions .

Adding to this trend, Korea's Library Company, a newer name on Broadway, has quickly established itself by co-producing "& Juliet" and "Some Like It Hot." As "& Juliet" recoups its Broadway investment and both shows prepare for a U.S. tour, Library Company's rapid ascent within the tightly knit Broadway is notable. The company plans to expand its role to become a lead producer on several upcoming projects, including a reading in New York this April of Korean American composer Julia Riew 's "Endless," which is aiming for a premiere in Korea in 2025 before heading to Broadway.

On the creative side, the Korean and American duo of Will Aronson and Hue Park will open their musical " Maybe Happy Ending " on Broadway in October. Highly acclaimed since its 2016 premiere in Korea, the English-language production stars Darren Criss and Helen J. Shen.

Co-writer and lyricist Park mentioned that the casting for the show's two lead roles, which are portrayed as obsolete Helperbots customizable to their master's preferences, faced no racial restrictions. However, both roles coincidentally ended up being cast with AAPI actors. Park added that, however, they are specifically seeking an Asian actor for the role of James, Oliver's former master, to align with the show’s Korean setting in Seoul and Jeju Island.

The short-lived 2022 musical "KPOP" explored the K-pop industry and showcased a handful of Asian talents on Broadway, but faced challenges with casual racism in reviews. Despite its brief run, it was recognized at the Tony Awards, with co-composer Helen Park becoming the first Asian woman nominated for Best Original Score. Park is now involved in the "Crazy Rich Asians" musical, directed by Jon M. Chu, which is expected to spotlight more Asian talent on Broadway.

Challenges and opportunities

After her Tony win in 2015, Miles spoke about the hurdles Asian actors face in finding opportunities.

"We have a lot of amazing, talented people who just don't have a platform," she said. “They are hitting those auditions and doing readings and they are striving and working so hard. But there's no place to practice, which is on the stage. There aren't enough roles. There aren't enough opportunities."

While there has been some progress, the journey toward full representation remains a challenge.

A 2021 study by the Asian American Performers Action Coalition (AAPAC) revealed that Asian actors held less than 10 percent of roles on New York stages during the 2018-19 season. This highlights the need for continued efforts to enhance diversity, not only among actors but also among creators and producers, to reflect a broader range of stories and experiences.

As the influence of Asian writers and composers increases, so does the synergy between authentic representation and innovative storytelling. Hwang Joo-min of "& Juliet" recognizes the strides made, but points out that the majority of creators and producers are still white, which can limit the themes and atmospheres of shows to white-centric perspectives.

"It's crucial to effectively understand and convey the essence of a show. While race or ethnicity isn't the sole factor, Asian actors are uniquely suited to roles designed for Asians, creating a natural synergy. It's encouraging to witness the rise of Asian talents such as David Henry Hwang and Helen Park on Broadway. I think we are witnessing a transformative process,” Hwang said with optimism.

Aronson and Park are working on another project titled "Il Tenore," inspired by Korea's first tenor Lee In-seon , that premiered in Seoul last year. The duo believes it has the potential to connect with Western audiences and provide more opportunities for AAPI actors, aiming to create a 21st-century equivalent to "The King and I," which historically attracted many Asian actors.

"When 'The King and I' was performed on Broadway in 2015, it was a rare opportunity that drew almost all available Asian actors to audition," Park said. "'Il Tenore' explores a universal theme of a man chasing his dreams, set against the backdrop of 1930s Seoul, which we believe will also resonate with Western audiences. We aspire to bring 'Il Tenore' to Broadway and, in doing so, continue to cast Asian actors in a similar vein to 'The King and I.'"

Rachel Weiss ’93, Michael Breslin ’13, and Eric Kuhn ’09.

Michael Breslin ’13 and Maia Novi met five years ago when they were both students at Yale School of Drama. The two hit it off and she asked him to direct a reading of a play she was writing — a semi-autobiographical dark comedy that follows the mental journal of an Argentinean acting student navigating the American entertainment industry as an immigrant artist.

Up to that point, Breslin had focused primarily on writing. His play, Circle Jerk, was a 2021 Pulitzer Prize finalist in drama. But because he enjoyed collaborating with Novi, he agreed to stay on as director when the show premiered last summer in Manhattan at The Tank.

“Writing will always be my true passion,” he says, “but my liberal arts brain never wants to do just one thing! It was so rewarding to get a project like this off the launching pad.”

Lending help with that lift-offa came from other Hamiltonians. Eric Kuhn ’09, an entrepreneur and theater producer with three Tony Awards to his credit, caught the show and signed on as producer. He also enlisted the support of his friend Rachel Weiss ’93, a strategic venture capital investor for L’Oreal.

The added support allowed the show to move to its Off-Broadway encore run. An appropriate ending for what one reviewer from New York Theatre Guide calls “a daring show with a shining ensemble.”

What the Producers Had to Say …

Eric kuhn ’09, producer.

“What was so clear about this show when we saw it is that the people on stage and behind the scenes are the next generation of theater makers. The way they tell stories is magical, and we wanted to help support them and bring the show to the next stage.

“Michael and I had been waiting for the right moment to do something together for a while. After all, we both share a love for theater and Hamilton! When I fell in love with Invasive Species and knew Michael was the director, it seemed like the perfect first project for us all to collaborate on.

“Rachel and I also have known each other for years through our work in tech and startups. We always shared a lot for the arts as well and worked together on a few previous projects, so it was thrilling to have her join the producing team as her debut show!”

Rachel Weiss ’93, co-producer

“Getting involved in theater producing and investing was a natural step for me, driven by the need to amplify women’s voices and ensure they are represented both on and off the stage. By funding and supporting these stories, we can inspire the next generation to embrace the arts.

“Working alongside talented Hamilton alums has made this journey even more rewarding and special. My long-standing friendship with Eric, which deepened as neighbors during the pandemic, has been instrumental. Riding my bike through the deserted theater district during COVID and sharing those moments with him fueled my desire to take an active role in the revival of theater for our beloved NYC.

“Eric’s guidance has been invaluable in teaching me the ropes of financing and producing. Additionally, collaborating with Michael, a fellow comp lit major whom I’ve long admired, was the icing on the cake to co-producing Invasive Species .”

In “Satisfied,” Renée Elise Goldsberry’s vlogs capture how the singer-actor secured the role of Angelica Schuyler in what would become the 2015 Broadway phenomenon “ Hamilton ,” while also enduring fertility issues and trying to mother her two young children.

Related Stories

Summer movie season testing 3d cinema’s recoverability, emmy's posthumous nominations could include chance perdomo, richard lewis and more, popular on variety.

“Satisfied,” which draws its title from the hit “Hamilton” song of the same name, intertwines Goldsberry’s home videos and her never-before-seen iPhone footage of early “Hamilton” workshops, as well as the show’s pre-Broadway run with archival news footage and interviews with subjects including Miranda. The result is a docu about a woman trying to do the impossible: balance motherhood with a thriving, demanding career.

Variety spoke to Goldsberry and “Satisfied” directors Chris Bolan and Melissa Haizlip ahead of the film’s Nantucket Film Festival premiere on June 22. (The docu made its world premiere earlier this month at Tribeca Film Festival.)

Renée, when you began vlogging about motherhood and “Hamilton,” did you know that you wanted to turn that footage into a documentary?

So, when did you realize that you wanted to make your footage a documentary?

GOLDSBERRY: In 2020, when the “Hamilton” film came out on Disney+, I became aware that there were two different things happening in my life back in 2014 at the same time: me doing the show and raising these two babies. I thought that that was pretty marvelous and that’s when I thought, maybe think about this in a bigger way.

Chris and Melissa, what was it like to intertwine two very separate stories — Renée’s “Hamilton” success and her motherhood journey — into one 84-minute film?

CHRIS BOLAN: “Hamilton” was just the vehicle. Renée’s story as a mother and her fertility journey was why we wanted to make this film. So, Melissa and I and the team were constantly trying to find that balance to make sure that Renée’s [motherhood] story was never overshadowed. So we were constantly in those conversations.

MELISSA HAIZLIP: Careers have their peaks and valleys, and motherhood has its peaks and valleys. I think combining that story together is so relatable, so universal. But then the specificity of Renée’s journey and the connection to “Hamilton” is so beautiful that being able to thread that together brings in this story in such a unique way. So, it was really important to foreground Renée’s story and to find those universal themes. But then to see them through Renée’s eyes was just magic. The film is a love letter to family, to motherhood, but also to Broadway and “Hamilton.”

Did a large part of the budget go to buying the rights to the songs and clips from “Hamilton,” which are used throughout the film?

BOLAN: No, because Lin and and the “Hamilton” universe have been so incredibly kind to us. [The song] “Satisfied” was expensive. That cost a little chunk. But it’s the little things that you don’t really expect. There was part of “Rent” [that Goldsberry performed in] that Melissa and I had to actually take out of the film. It was four seconds long, but that was going to cost $30,000. But honestly, people were so incredibly more generous than I’ve ever experienced in any other film that I’ve been a part of.

Trying to be a good mother and having career ambitions are like oil and water. Renée, you managed to do it, but would you agree that motherhood and a thriving career are at odds with one another?
