Full of interesting historic sites and important cultural landmarks, Pennsylvania’s capital Harrisburg lies in the southeast of the state alongside the Susquehanna River. Although not particularly large, it is the perfect size for a quiet weekend getaway or city trip with Allentown , Gettysburg and York all lying within driving distance.

Thanks to its strategic setting and the development of its canal and railway system, the city played a role in not just the Westward Migration and Industrial Revolution but the American Civil War too. This and its selection as the capital in 1812 explains the huge number of historic buildings and museums found in town.

In addition to enjoying some fun outdoor activities at City Island, visitors can ogle at the exquisite architecture of its state capitol. Taking a scenic cruise along the river is one of the most popular things to do in Harrisburg during the summer months. The city is also known for hosting the Pennsylvania Farm Show and Great American Outdoor Show; two of the largest events of their kind in the country.

16. Pennsylvania National Fire Museum

A fun and fascinating place to explore, the Pennsylvania National Fire Museum can be found in the Olde Uptown part of Harrisburg. Actually housed in a Victorian-era firehouse, its varied collection includes old alarm systems, historic fire engines and much, much more besides.

Dedicated to preserving the state’s fire fighting heritage, it was founded back in 1993 with its lovely brick building remarkably dating to 1899. Its innumerable artifacts, exhibits and photos all highlight how people used to battle blazes in the past with a memorial wall commemorating those who served at the fire station.

As well as seeing horse-drawn carriages and vintage equipment parts, you can learn about intricate communications systems of years gone by and snap photos of some shiny modern fire trucks.

15. Capital Area Greenbelt

A wonderful way to see more of the city and its surroundings is to walk, run, jog or cycle along the Capital Area Greenbelt. Its pretty route takes you past plenty of pristine nature spots and parks with numerous important landmarks, monuments and museums also featuring.

Stretching twenty miles in total, the multi-purpose path loops its way completely around the center of the capital. While some sections meander their way peacefully through wild areas or along the Susquehanna River, others connect up various neighborhoods and tourist attractions.

As you travel along the trail, you can take in the fine fauna and flora of the region and read about its history from the informative plaques scattered about. You can also explore the Reservoir, Riverfront and Wildwood parks or stop by the National Civil War Museum and the fantastic Five Senses Garden.

14. Cathedral of Saint Patrick

Aside from the stupendous State Capitol Building, one of Harrisburg’s most impressive edifices is undoubtedly the Cathedral of Saint Patrick. Instantly recognizable from its gigantic green dome and fetching facade, it really is a treat to stroll around with most of downtown’s other main sights lying just a stone’s throw away.

Now recognized as a National Historic Landmark, the colossal cathedral was built back in 1907 and exhibits some exceptional Baroque Revival and Renaissance Revival architecture. After taking in its towering facade, stained-glass windows and dramatic dome, it is well worth venturing inside to see its equally attractive interior.

Invariably described as awe-inspiring, its light and airy nave and transept are intricately decorated with fine artworks, statues of religious figures and phenomenal frescoes.

13. Broad Street Market

If you want to buy some fresh fruit and veg, delicious baked goods or simply want to experience the lively local ambience, then make sure to head to Broad Street Market. Located in Midtown, its rows of stands and stalls have a wide variety of locally grown produce, preservatives and prepared meals for you to pick up.

One of the oldest continuously operating farmers markets in the country, it was established in 1863 as a way to help feed the hordes of Union soldiers based nearby. Within its humongous hall, you can find more than forty vendors selling everything from fresh produce and cuts of meat to sandwiches, soups and soft pretzels.

In addition, there is also an eclectic array of street food from all around the world to try with coffee stands and gift stalls also dotted about.

12. Riverfront Park

Although it lies right next to downtown, the peaceful and picturesque Riverfront Park feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. As well as offering up striking panoramas of the river and City Island, it has all kinds of fun outdoor activities for you to enjoy.

Running parallel to the sparkling Susquehanna River, the long, narrow park and its gorgeous green spaces was founded back in 1912. This was during the nationwide City Beautiful Movement which aimed to introduce more elegant outdoor spaces and architecture to urban areas.

Next to both its delightful gardens and leafy paths are statues, memorials and public art installations with fitness machines and picnic benches also on offer. During the year, Riverfront Park puts on many of the city’s main festivals and cultural events such as MusicFest, Kipona and Pride.

11. FNB Field

If you’re after an exciting sporting spectacle when in town, then the fabulous FNB Field is definitely the place to go. Lying just across Market Street Bridge from the park, the intimate and atmospheric venue lies right at the center of City Island.

The home of the Harrisburg Senators, the small stadium sits on the exact same spot where baseball has now been played for well over a century. Opened in 1987, the beautiful minor league ballpark is a very family-friendly place to catch a game with great sightlines, snack stands and between-innings entertainment all guaranteed.

Aside from watching the Double-A Eastern League affiliate of the Washington Nationals, locals and tourists alike can make use of all the state-of-the-art facilities that surround the field. These include not just volleyball courts and softball fields but marinas, a food court and nature trails too.

10. Fort Hunter Mansion and Park

Just up the Susquehanna River from the center, is another of the area’s interesting historic sights: the Fort Hunter Mansion and Park. Surrounded by lots of lovely lush grounds and gardens, the historic house museum highlights what life was like for affluent Americans back in 1725.

Perched atop a bluff overlooking the river, the enormous estate now encompasses around a dozen old buildings for visitors to explore. Throughout its long history, it served as a wartime fort, frontier trading post and private residence.

The Victorian-era mansion is home to fantastic furnishings, period pieces and engaging exhibits with costumed actors and expert guides both helping explain more about the epoch. Due to its scenic splendor, many people host private events and weddings in its idyllic riverside park.

9. Whitaker Center

Back in the center of town, you can find the wonderful Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts. In addition to lots of hands-on activities and experiments, it boasts an IMAX cinema and performance theater where dance, music and science shows regularly take place.

The first complex of its kind in the country to use science as an entry to the arts, it was first opened to the public in 1999. Packed across its three floors are more than 200 interactive exhibits focusing on the natural sciences, maths and technology with exciting esports areas and STEM design studios also included.

Besides watching an educational yet entertaining film in its IMAX, you can always enjoy an opera, ballet or orchestra performance in its splendid theater.

8. Appalachian Brewing Company

After the sightseeing, shows and sporting events, what better way to relax than with a freshly pulled pint at the Appalachian Brewing Company. Located not too far from the science center and Capitol Park, it has terrific tours and tastings for you to take at its atmospheric brewpub.

Actually the first and only brewery to open in the capital since prohibition times, it was founded in 1997 and now operates in numerous cities across the state. While its lager room, production line and bottling floor occupy an old brick building that dates to 1890, its restaurant and tasting room can be found in a modern building adjoining it.

While sampling signature brews such as Aero-Head, Outta Focus and Water Gap, guests can enjoy delicious burgers, tacos and other casual bites in its lively yet laidback bar.

7. Wildwood Park

Home to loads of stunning landscapes, scenery and nature, Wildwood Park lies just a short distance northeast of Uptown. A very popular place to exercise and immerse yourself in nature, its sprawling confines are centered around the large and lovely lake of the same name.

2. National Civil War Museum

Sometimes said to be the only institute in the country to tell the entire story of the war, the National Civil War Museum lies in Reservoir Park. Its galleries present a balanced, unbiased look at both the Union and Confederate cause with every event, the aftermath and even certain individuals examined in minute detail.

Only established in 2001, its innumerable artifacts and exhibits occupy a two-storey brick building right in the center of the park. While some sections focus on slavery and the first shots fired at Fort Sumter, later parts look at how geography and topography affected troop movements. Particularly captivating displays include those on why soldiers decided to fight for either side and women’s roles in the war.

Its large collection of original artifacts also includes personal possessions of important generals and old uniforms and weapons used by common soldiers. THE NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM

The National Civil War Museum sits on a hill overlooking the city of Harrisburg. On the grounds of the museum, you will follow a red brick sidewalk called “The Walk of Valor.” It symbolizes the bloodshed during times of war and honors the names of Civil War veterans. Also outside the museum building, you will see the Moment of Mercy, which is a statue depicting Sgt. Kirkland.

The museum’s collection includes more than 4,400 artifacts and 21,000 archival pieces. Exhibits include A House Divided, Campaigns of 1862, The Peculiar Institution, Battle Map, First Shots, Civil War Music, and more.

BROAD STREET MARKET

The Broad Street Market is a collection of over 40 vendors. Vendors provide locally-grown, organic produce, meats, baked goods, and freshly prepared meals. 

Founded in 1860, Broad Street Market is one of the oldest markets in the country. The market played an integral part in the Civil War, as vendors fed over 300,000 Union soldiers. This historical market was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

In more recent years, the island has become a popular destination for concerts like Metallica and Grateful Dead, outdoor activities, and leisure time. Here, you’ll find multi-purpose sports fields, sand volleyball courts, a fitness center, City Island Railroad steam locomotive rides, a carousel, the Pride of the Susquehanna paddle-wheel riverboat, horse-drawn carriage rides, and miniature golf.

WILDWOOD PARK

If you want an escape from the city, a trip to Wildwood Park will do the trick. The park is open everyday from dawn till dusk, and features nature trails, boardwalks, and a nature center. 

Trails range from easy to difficult and vary in length, and there are a number of trails that are wheelchair- and stroller-accessible. The park is home to frogs, snakes, birds, turtles, fish, and much more — so keep an eye out!

Wildwood Park is also popular for fishing at The Middle Parking Lot, the Towpath Trail, and along the Paxton Creek Bridge. You can also kayak, canoe, or stand up paddle around the lake.

CAPITAL AREA GREENBELT

If you’re really looking to get out and explore the lush area surrounding Harrisburg, the Capital Area Greenbelt Trail is a great option. This 21.2-mile loop is a mixed surface trail including asphalt, cinder, concrete, and crushed stone. 

The loop takes you around the city limits connecting parks, and museums, as well as a stretch of gardens and woods along the shores of the Susquehanna River. Many people use the loop in sections for hiking, walking, and mountain biking, and in the winter, you can find people cross-country skiing. 

FORT HUNTER MANSION AND PARK

Built on top of a hill overlooking the Susquehanna River, Fort Hunter Mansion and Park has had an interesting history. The park has served as a war fort, a hub for frontier commerce, as well as a luxurious private estate. Today, the estate and its grounds are open to the public.

There are guided tours available to see the inside of the mansion. The park surrounding the mansion contains 40+ acres to explore. There are walking trails, lawns to play games or have a picnic on, two children’s playgrounds, or you can canoe, kayak, or explore the river on a small motorized boat. 

There is a small gift shop on-site, a covered bridge, Tavern House, Centennial Barn, Hector Church, and the Fort Hunter Service Station. 

WHITAKER CENTER

In downtown Harrisburg, you’ll find the Whitaker Center , which features endless entertainment. From cinema features and science discovery labs to shows for all ages, there is always something to do at the Whitaker Center. 

Their big-screen features different movies throughout the day and changes frequently, so you’ll always have something new to watch. They always have a variety of live entertainment shows at any given time, which makes it the perfect place to spend a rainy or cold day in the city.

The Whitaker Center is also home to a Science Lab, where the public can explore the sciences and perform experiments.

PENNSYLVANIA NATIONAL FIRE MUSEUM

The Pennsylvania National Fire Museum is housed in a historic 1899 Victorian Firehouse. Dedicated to preserving the history of the fire service from the time of America’s Colonial days to the present, the PNFM is an exciting way to learn about the history of firefighting. 

Permanent exhibits include Gamewell Alarm System, Parade Hats, 1792 Hand Pumper, Memorial Wall, Patches, and Parade Apparatus. There is also a small gift shop on site.

The Alarm System exhibit features the Dauphin County Fire Dispatch Console that was in service during the nuclear incident at Three Mile Island in March of 1979. The Parade Hats exhibits include one of the largest parade hats collections and the Patches collection showcases almost 3,000 patches from fire companies throughout the United States.

The Memorial Hall honors those that have died in the line of duty by memorializing their names on 3/4″ brass expansion rings that have been cut, pressed flat, and engraved. The 1972 Hand Pumper is an early version of today’s firetruck. It is a single-deck, end stroke, two-piston hand pump capable of discharging about 150 gallons per minute, where water had to be physically poured into the wooden box. 

JOHN HARRIS AND SIMON CAMERON MANSION

First constructed in 1766, the John Harris and Simon Cameron Mansion has been designated a National Historic Landmark since 1976. Tours of the mansion are done by the Historical Society. 

Since its beginning, there have been several additions and restoration projects to the mansion. Points of interest on the tour include the Victorian Parlor with its legendary mirrors, Gen. Simon Cameron’s office complete with his own desk and cabinets, Richard C. Haldeman’s library, the Solarium, the dining room, the colonial bedroom, a Victorian bedroom, and the tour-de-force 1920 Art Deco bathroom.

There is also a small gift shop on site. 

PRIDE OF THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVERBOAT CRUISE

Built in 1988, The Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat is one of the only six remaining riverboats left with an authentic paddlewheel in the United States. The boat is a replica of the riverboats used in the late 1800s.

The riverboat offers public and private cruises during the warmer months, as well as special event cruises, including Jazzin’ on the Pride, Classic Dinner Cruises, Sunset Dinner Cruises, Murder Mystery Dinner Cruises, Wine on Wednesdays, and Princess and Superhero Cruises. They also offer educational cruises. 

Millworks is a Harrisburg favorite for both locals and tourists and celebrates art, food, and brewery. This award-winning eatery, brewery, and events space feature local growers and local artists.

The restaurant and brewery seat over 200 people and has a rooftop Biergarten, as well as an open-air courtyard. 

INDIAN ECHO CAVERNS

The Indian Echo Caverns are one of the most visited attractions throughout the Eastern part of the United States. The caverns remain at a constant 52 degrees, and they were originally used for storage and shelter for Native Americans.

The caves have had many names throughout the years, including the Wilson Cave, the Hummelstown Cave, and simply, Echo Cave. Once the caves became commercialized, they became known as Indian Echo Caverns. These limestone cavers are more than 440 million years old. 

Tours through the cave run about an hour long. On-site you can also visit the petting zoo, picnic area, gift shop, and playground.  You can also try your luck at the Gem Mill Junction, where you may find gemstones, chunks of amethyst, jasper, calcite, agate, and more. 

DAY TRIP TO HERSHEY

Known as the “Sweetest Place on Earth”, Hershey, Pennsylvania is home to the Hershey Chocolate Factory, amusement park, museum, and much more. 

Hershey has been a fun family vacation for over 100 years. Hershey Park consists of rollercoasters for all ages, classic family rides, a Ferris wheel, bumper cars, swings, carousels, tower-drop rides, music express, monorail and so much more. 

There is also a water park to visit that has slides and pools for all ages. There is also a zoo in Hersey called ZooAmeria. The zoo is home to over 200 animals. All the animals at the zoo are native to the five regions of the North American continent. This includes gray wolves, mountain lions, bobcats, ocelots, lynx, black bears, coati, Gila Monster, parrots, ferrets, alligators, snakes, lizards, owls, spoonbill birds, plus many more.

Hershey is home to 16 deliciously unique and award-winning restaurants to satisfy any palette, and of course, you can find chocolate anywhere and everywhere. There are fine dining options, casual dining options, as well as family-friendly options. There is a golf course and shopping options, as well as a chocolate-inspired spa. 

Hersey Gardens and Hersey Museum are also popular attractions when visiting Hershey, PA. The museum includes interactive exhibits, chocolate tasting, and a lab for creating your own chocolate. The gardens include seasonal exhibits, butterfly gardens, and of course seasonal flowers and plants.

1: Pennsylvania State Capitol

A visit to the Capitol is a trip to an art and history museum rolled into a beautiful package.

The Pennsylvania State Capitol is known as one of the most treasured in the nation for the architectural and interior design, various attractions around the complex, statues, and foliage that change color throughout the year.

Though you are welcome to tour the grounds at your own leisure, scheduling a tour is highly recommended so you can learn all about the incredible history surrounding this incredible State Capitol.

2: National Civil War Museum

With the Civil War becoming a much talked about topic of late, why not go study up on the war to learn more?

The exhibits of the National Civil War Museum tell an in-depth story about the American Civil War with no bias towards either the Union or the Confederacy.

The timeline represented here runs from 1850 to 1876 with the main emphasis being on 1861-1865.

There are over 24,000 artifacts, photographs, manuscripts, and other printed documentation to show what life was like throughout America during the Civil War. A must-see attraction in Harrisburg for any and all!

3: City Island

Looking for a wonderful location where you can relax and play and spend the day surrounded by water? Then you should head to City Island, a 63-acre recreational park in the middle of the Susquehanna River.

You can watch baseball at the Metro Bank Park, then hop aboard the Pride of the Susquehanna.

If you would rather stay on dry land, then there is a steam train to ride or horse-drawn carriages that can take you to the miniature golf course, the arcade, batting cages, an observation deck at RiverSide Village Park, or the small beach.

4: Pride of the Susquehanna

Do you love the idea of touring the Susquehanna River via boat and watching the sunset? Then the Pride of the Susquehanna is going to make that dream come true.

The Pride was built as a community service project by the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society and has been a popular attraction ever since.

The public sightseeing tours are just one of the ways that this authentic paddlewheel riverboat is used.

Enjoy a 45-minute long cruise on a boat with climate controlled rooms and handicapped accessibility. It's perfect for a date, friends or a family!

5: Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts

Cinema, science, and the arts don't usually come together as perfectly as they do at the Whitaker Center.

The cinema is great for rainy and cold days, as you can go with friends, family, or with your significant other to discover more about the world through 3D glasses.

Science exhibits come and go, but they are usually seasonal, so you never know what fun you will find.

Lastly, the arts involve musical performances from well-known bands to comedy, theatre, and dance. All tickets can be reserved in advance, making it easy to fit a show or two into your schedule.

6: The State Museum of Pennsylvania

The State Museum of Pennsylvania is a history museum offering a myriad of experiences. One such experience is the Planetarium, where you can see shows on science and the state's history.

It is a very family-friendly institution. They have many great permanent exhibits, including an exhibit on the founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn.

They also have an archaeology and anthropology exhibit, a transportation exhibit, and the “Village Square” exhibit, which is super cool.

It is a life-size streetscape where you can learn about a typical 19th century Pennsylvania town. It is pretty popular on the list of places to visit in Harrisburg.

7: Fort Hunter Mansion and Park

The Fort Hunter Mansion and Park is a historical estate featuring multiple buildings and even a historic covered bridge. Covered bridges are just so aesthetically pleasing.

The estate was built in 1725, so it is the perfect place to learn about colonial Pennsylvania. It has seen slavery and war, making it rich in important American history.

Additionally, it overlooks the beautiful Susquehanna River, making this a great place to visit or host an event. They offer tours daily and have live colonial actors.

8: Susquehanna Art Museum

Susquehanna Art Museum, or SAM, is a community-focused art museum. They have volunteer opportunities and offer art classes.

Their exhibits feature incredible art. Plus, they have a program geared to educating children about art. This is their VanGo! Museum on wheels.

It is an RV trailer with a hands-on activity and galleries geared towards kiddos.

They also feature artwork from high school students in the Artistic Expressions exhibitions. So, this is a great option in Harrisburg attractions if you are looking to support the local art community.

9: John Harris and Simon Cameron Mansion

This mansion is another excellent way to connect with history. John Harris was the original owner of the home, which was built in the early 1700s.

He was the first European to settle the area, and hence the name Harrisburg.

He is buried across the street. Throughout the years, the estate had many owners, including Simon Cameron, a businessman and state senator (he served for 20 years).

His children were the last to own the home before it was donated to the historical society.

The house was renovated quite a few times by the time the home was donated, so there are some really interesting additions and decor throughout the mansion- from Victorian to art deco.

You will appreciate the history and architecture if you make a stop at the mansion.

10: Wildwood Park

Wildwood Park looks so beautiful, and it is free! The park has a lot of history and was once a thriving part of the community, hosting boating, horse riding, and even a zoo.

After falling into shambles, the National Audubon Society began to take interest and the land was once again cared for.

You can visit this park and enjoy the many walking trails, the lake, and the nature center.

It is a great place for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. It is also home to the endangered tree species, the American locust. You won’t regret a visit to Wildwood Park.

11: Pennsylvania National Fire Museum

The PNFM is seriously so cool! Especially if you like the Victorian Era. The museum itself is a Victorian-era firehouse.

As volunteer fire stations were invented in the United States, you will get an incredible look into how the volunteers fought fires in the early days of firefighting.

You can see a handpump and old alarm systems. There is a memorial wall, historic fire engines, and a look into the role volunteer firefighters played in parade ceremonies. It's a fun spot and super affordable.

12: Broad Street Market

The Broad Street Market is the spot to go for locally sourced goods. You can connect with farmers of the area to purchase locally grown fruit, veggies, poultry, meat, eggs, and more.

Additionally, you can get baked goods and some seriously delicious prepared meals. It also must be said that you have to try the ice cream. It is so fresh and delicious- it is locally sourced, after all.

Get pierogies, charcuterie, or falafel. There is even a winery here. There’s also the option for jewelry and artisan gifts. In short, they have it all to please all your senses, especially your palate.

13: Appalachian Brewing Company

If you like beer, this is where you want to be. It is the first and only brewery in the state capital since 1951.

The brewery is located in a historical building that boasts "antique brick walls, massive wooden beams, hardwood floors and ceilings."

You can take a brewery tour or simply just enjoy the brewpub. The food menu at the brewpub is extensive.

There is something for everyone- soups, salads, burgers, flatbreads, sandwiches, tacos, quesadillas, lovely classic entrees, and a wide variety of appetizers.

14: Cathedral of Saint Patrick

The stunning Cathedral of Saint Patrick is often a high priority for visitors when it comes to the best things to see in Harrisburg.

The architecture is just stunning in its "Baroque Revival style with Renaissance Revival influences and capped with a classically influenced dome.”

There are 45 stained glass windows imported from Germany throughout the church. There are also fresco paintings, just like in Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

There are multiple shrines for the past bishops of the diocese. This is a great spot to learn about Catholicism or just simply admire the artistic styles of the cathedral.

It should be mentioned that they are one of the only places left in the state that still say Latin mass.

15: Capital Area Greenbelt

When you visit any state’s capital, you’ve got to hit the capital area. It’s a 20-mile loop around the city of Harrisburg.

It is bike-friendly and connects to many parts of the city beyond the capital, including the previously mentioned Wildwood Park.

One of the unique features of the Capital Area Greenbelt is the Five Senses Garden. It is well cared for and designed to engage all the senses.

You can see wildflowers, butterflies and more if you stop at this spot along the Greenbelt. It also features multiple arboretums, access to museums, and multiple Harrisburg landmarks. It is definitely one of the top things to do in Harrisburg.

The Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex is one of Harrisburg’s most popular attractions.

The complex includes the Pennsylvania State Capitol, which was built in 1906 and is home to the Pennsylvania General Assembly, as well as the governor’s residence.

An interactive timeline allows visitors to trace major battles from 1861 to 1865 and view images from the first battlefield photographs taken during this time.

Founded in 1996 by the Trögner brothers, Chris and John, Tröegs Independent Brewing Company is one of the well-known craft breweries in the region.

The tour begins with a walk through their fermentation cellar, where guests can observe the brewing tanks that give Tröegs beer its unique flavour.

A fabulous thing to do in Harrisburg on a chilly autumn afternoon is to walk through a pumpkin patch and choose the perfect pumpkin, ready to be carved.

The Strite family has owned Strite’s Orchardily since 1928 when founder George Strite purchased the land and began planting apple trees.

Today you can pick apples straight from their trees, and during certain times of the year, other fruit such as peaches, pears, blueberries and plums are also available for picking.

September and October are excellent months to go fruit picking.

There’s an expansive pumpkin patch for those looking for their perfect jack-o’-lantern, as well as hayrides, playgrounds and a farm market with homemade apple cider doughnuts and ice cream.

The corn mazes (open in October only) is a must-do.

Tours of this building are offered throughout the week and showcase the building’s history and beauty. You might even get to see your state representatives in action.

Hershey’s Chocolate Tour – The Hershey’s Chocolate Tour at Hershey’s Chocolate World is the closest thing to a factory tour that Hershey’s offers. While it’s more geared toward kids with its catchy songs and animatronic creatures, it’s still an interesting tour for the whole family. At the end, you even get a free piece of chocolate. This is definitely one of the best free things to do in Hershey, PA.

Tour the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence – Tours of the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April-June and in September and October. Riverfront Park – Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park runs four miles through the city adjacent to the Susquehanna River. The park is quite narrow but features paths perfect for biking, jogging, or a nice stroll along the riverfront past many outdoor art pieces. It’s also a great place to enjoy the sunset over the Susquehanna.

Perry County Council of the Arts Gallery – The Perry County Council for the Arts is located on the Square in Newport, PA, and showcases the work of more than 150 regional artists. In addition to its normal gallery of local art, the PCCA also features a gallery that highlights various exhibitions throughout the year.

Weightlifting Hall of Fame – The Weightlifting Hall of Fame is located south of Harrisburg near York. Located at the home of York Barbell, this 8,000-square-foot museum highlights the history of weightlifting from its earliest inception and through its many forms.

Adams-Ricci Community Park – Adams-Ricci Community Park is one of the best local parks in the Harrisburg area and features one of Pennsylvania’s best playgrounds for kids. Known as the Imagination Station, the park is filled with towers, swings, and bridges. The park also features tennis courts, horseshoe pits, and a nature trail.

Bowmansdale Covered Bridge crosses the Yellow Breeches on the campus of Messiah College. Ramp Covered Bridge is a bit further away near Shippensburg but is worth the drive if you love covered bridges.

Waggoner’s Gap Hawk Watch – Bird watchers won’t want to miss the great birding and views from Waggoner’s Gap Hawk Watch. While the vista is accessible year-round, it’s most popular in the fall during the annual raptor migration.

Galleries at the Millworks – The Millworks is a restaurant, brewery, and artists’ studio in downtown Harrisburg. Visitors are welcome to come look around at the works of the 30+ artists who have studio space here. There’s even a shop where you can buy some of their creations.

Italian Lake Park – Italian Lake Park in north Harrisburg is a great place for a stroll and often features free live music during the summer months. The park is home to a Japanese-style bridge, beautiful fountains, and antique street lights.

Letort Falls – Letort Falls is a small cascade in Letort Falls Park near Carlisle. While it’s not large, it is the closest waterfall to downtown Harrisburg and is a great spot for trout fishing or to simply relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Rolls-Royce Foundation Museum – The Rolls-Royce Fountain Museum in Mechanicsburg features a collection of Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars dating back to the 1920s. Fort Hunter Conservancy – Fort Hunter Conservancy is a piece of public land that abuts state game lands. There are several miles of hiking trails in this area, and a hike to the top of the hill offers an impressive view of downtown Harrisburg.

Capital Area Greenbelt – The Capitol Area Greenbelt is a 20-mile trail that winds its way around downtown Harrisburg. Traveling mostly on dedicated biking and walking paths, a trip on the Greenbelt offers the chance to see both downtown Harrisburg and the beautiful natural scenery that surrounds it.

Rose Lehrman Arts Center – The Rose Lehrman Arts Center at Harrisburg Area Community College showcases the school’s permanent art collection. In addition to its collection, the center hosts temporary exhibitions and artist lectures that are free to the public.

Landis House – The Landis House in Newport, PA, showcases the history of this beautiful home and the people that lived here. Explore the home’s Germanic furnishings while also experiencing exhibitions related to local art and history.

Hawk Rock Overlook – Hawk Rock Overlook is an impressive vista located on the Appalachian Trail in Duncannon, PA. This mile-long hike is somewhat challenging but doable for the entire family. From the vista, you can see the confluence of the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers, as well as the community of Duncannon.

Molly Pitcher’s Grave – During the Revolutionary War, Molly Pitcher gained prominence for her heroism during the Battle of Monmouth. Those wanting to pay their respects can visit her grave and a statue of her in Carlisle’s Old Public Graveyard.

Historic Buildings in Mechanicsburg   – Mechanicsburg, PA is home to five historic buildings that are open for free tours. The buildings include the old train station and the oldest building in the borough. They offer a great glimpse into 19th-century life in the region.

Brewery Tour at Appalachian Brewing Company – Appalachian Brewing Company is the oldest brewery in Harrisburg and has expanded to more than half a dozen locations around the area. Hike in Stony Valley – Stony Valley is a large swath of public land that offers great hiking and many interesting features worth seeing. Highlights here include a fire tower, an abandoned village, and a rock field known as the Devil’s Race Course.

Gravity Hill – Defy gravity at Gravity Hill near Lewisberry. This public road just off of I-83 features an optical illusion where it looks and feels as if your car is rolling uphill. While trying this phenomenon is a lot of fun, be careful as you are on a public road.

Trout Gallery – Trout Gallery is the art museum for Dickinson College in Carlisle . The museum showcases significant art pieces from all over the world. They also offer educational opportunities and host rotating exhibits that cover a variety of subjects.

Broad Street Market – Harrisburg’s Broad Street Market is one of several markets in PA that claim to be the country’s oldest. However, whether that’s true or not, it’s still a fantastic place to visit to explore and to sample the deliciousness of the area.

Art Association of Harrisburg – The Art Association of Harrisburg showcases rotating exhibits from local artists and from around the world. This museum in downtown Harrisburg showcases both a standard gallery and a purchase gallery for those looking for new artwork for their home.

York Time Institute – The York Time Institute is a horology school where students learn how to make and repair watches and clocks. Visitors can tour the institute by appointment and see repairs of historical timepieces happening as you watch.

Indoor Tours

There’s a lot to uncover about our region year-round on an indoor tour where you can learn how things are made or what life was like centuries ago.

Some of you may remember a time when you could tour the actual Hershey’s Chocolate factory. Today, all generations can enjoy a free simulated factory tour ride inside Hershey’s Chocolate World . You’ll learn how the sweet stuff is made, from cocoa bean to candy bar wrapper. If your idea of a treat comes in a pint glass, you’ve got to take a guided or self-guided production tour at Tröegs Independent Brewing . From fermentation to bottling, you’ll discover what makes their processes unique and sip a few samples along the way.

The Pennsylvania State Capitol offers free guided tours daily filled with fascinating facts about this palace of art and a building President Teddy Roosevelt observed as “the handsomest building I ever saw.” See inside the House and Senate Chambers as well as the Supreme Court, the highest court in Pennsylvania. Turn the clocks back a few decades when you visit two of Harrisburg’s mansions-turned-museums: Fort Hunter Mansion & Park and John Harris-Simon Cameron Mansion . These historic homes housed several prominent Pennsylvanians and played pivotal parts in shaping Harrisburg’s history. Mansion tours are offered seasonally.

When we said indoors, we also meant underground! Echo Dell – Indian Echo Caverns is a natural geologic wonder millions of years in the making. The Caverns’ “wow” factor comes from their impressive rock formations, echoing rooms, an underground lake, fascinating history, and consistent 52-degree temperature year-round! Head underground on a guided tour to uncover what attracts millions of visitors all over the East Coast.

Where else can you explore underground caverns, ride a vintage trolley, or feed a bear? These unique experiences, plus a few hidden gems, will leave you saying, “I didn’t know they offered that!”

In addition to browsing the sweet vintage rides at AACA Museum, Inc. , gearheads can upgrade their visit with a Behind-the-Scenes tour of the Museum’s 15,000-square-foot collection storage garage. Tours are offered daily Memorial Day to Labor Day plus some spring/fall weekends and feature 50-70 additional cars not currently on display.

Did you know? You can go behind the scenes at ZooAmerica ® North American Wildlife Park on an exclusive guided tour. Set your alarm for the Early Bird tour or stay late After Hours to get up close to the bears, give an otter a snack, hold a bird of prey, or stroke a reptile! Outdoor Tours

There are lots of ways to tour the Hershey Harrisburg Region – by bus, by boat– just to name a few.

Let’s start with an art walk! Add Murals & More – A Walk of Art to your phone and let us be your audio tour guide for discovering beautiful murals, historic architecture, and towering monuments in Harrisburg. You can follow one of two suggested routes or mix & match based on your preferred starting point.

Do a little fresh air sight-cycling in Harrisburg along the 20-mile Capital Area Greenbelt . It’s free to schedule a guided tour (four-rider minimum) that highlights nature, trail history, local history, and more.

Enjoy 360-degree views of Harrisburg aboard The Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat on a daily sightseeing cruise. The Pride is one of the last remaining authentic paddlewheel vessels left in the country, and it’s so uniquely constructed that they couldn’t rebuild it even if they tried. The Pride sails daily in the summer and weekends in the spring and fall.

Take a walk, or ride, on the wild side on a safari tour of Lake Tobias Wildlife Park. Their fleet of open-air buses gets you up close and personal to more than 500 freely roaming elk, bison, deer, antelope, and exotic animals. Listen in as your tour guide shares fun facts about the animals’ habitats and behaviors. Lake Tobias is open May through October.

Top Tour-Taking Tips

• Reserve your seat. While most of our region’s tour options can be booked on a whim, it’s a good idea to research and plan. During our peak season (May-August), tours often fill up fast! Consider buying your tickets ahead of time to ensure availability. Additionally, some tours are only offered seasonally and are weather dependent.
• Arrive early. In addition to booking in advance, it’s a good idea to arrive early to get a good seat on public tours. Most tours have strict start times, so you’ll want to make sure you’re on time, or you might get left behind.
• Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Most tours involve a little, or a lot, of walking, so opt for sneakers over stilettos and dress in layers to adjust to changing indoor/outdoor conditions.
• Have your camera at the ready. Our tours are cool because you get to see unique sights and spaces! Snap a few photos to show everyone at home what you learned.
