Holland America FIRST Impressions & Glacier Bay

Exploring Glacier Bay and Holland America Cruises

• The experience of visiting Glacier Bay for the first time after 40 cruises.

In my latest YouTube video, I shared my first experience visiting Glacier Bay after many cruises to Alaska. The beauty of the place left me completely overwhelmed. I sailed with Holland America on the Eurodam, a midsize ship built in 2007 that accommodates 2100 guests. It offered a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

On this visit to Alaska I stayed in a balcony cabin on the Eurodam and loved it. The large balcony, bathtub, and ample closet space were wonderful. I also appreciated the size and comfort of the sofa bed for my son.

This video covers our seven-night Alaska cruise itinerary, which included stops at various ports like Sitka, Juneau, and Icy Strait Point, with Glacier Bay as the highlight. The Eurodam has a significant focus on music, with venues like the World Stage for shows and the Billboard Onboard area.

Dining on the ship was a delight. The main dining room, buffet, and specialty restaurants like Canaletto and Tamarind offered a variety of options. I was particularly excited about dining at Nami Sushi, and it didn’t disappoint – especially considering the reasonable price point.

Regarding the onboard demographic, while Holland America is generally known for an older crowd, summer cruises to Alaska attract more families and younger passengers. There were plenty of activities for kids and teens, making it a great option for family cruising.

The entertainment options on the ship ranged from music to dance parties, catering to various tastes. When it comes to Glacier Bay, this video has some tips such as pacing yourself, exploring different viewing spots on the ship, and attending enrichment seminars to enhance the experience. I recommended using the Bridge Cam Channel to catch glacier talks and take in the naturalist’s insights. Attending the various seminars and reading the provided materials can also to the experience.

I highly recommend Holland America for cruising in Alaska, especially for experiencing Glacier Bay. Cruising Through Glacier Bay National Park Alaska: A Photo Essay

Cruising through the rugged wilderness of Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park was one of the most photogenic experiences we’ve had all year. The day in October that we traveled through the scenic waters will go down as a highlight in all of our travels around the world. Slowly entering the calm and pristine bay, surrounded by mountains and glaciers is an awe-inducing experience.

We often write detailed, info-packed articles about our adventures and tips for the destinations we visit. But in this post we’re going to take a detour from that. We’ll (mostly) let the pictures speak for themselves while recounting the day. Of course, we’ll still spill a quick review and tips.

We took a grand total of 357 photos in all. The natural beauty here makes photography effortless. We now share some of these favorite shots as travel inspiration. The wilderness throughout this National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site is spectacular. It is raw Alaska at its finest. Cruising through the waters of Glacier Bay is an inspiring bucket-list trip that we highly recommend as a fantastic voyage for any nature lovers.

Entering Glacier Bay National Park

Our visit into Glacier Bay was entirely on a cruise ship. This is actually the most common way that people experience the out-of-the-way National Park. We weren’t certain how much of Glacier Bay we’d actually be able to see by simply leaning over the rails of a big ship. But we soon discovered there was an immense amount of raw beauty to experience without even stepping foot off the ship.

Overnight the crew of the Holland America Volendam had slowly navigated us 65 miles from Juneau through Alaska’s inland waters. It was early in the morning when our ship pulled into the mouth of Glacier Bay. We awoke to looming Alaskan mountains outside our stateroom window. That alone filled us with enough excitement to race towards the upper decks for a hot cup of coffee amidst the icy views that were slowly beginning to come into focus.

It wasn’t long before we could see Mount Fairweather. This is one of the tallest coastal mountains in the world, soaring 4,671 meters (15,325 feet) up towards the sky.

The mountain seemed appropriately named during this morning, as the weather was indeed fair. Morning fog and low clouds were fleeting, unveiling bright blue skies.

Back in 1778 Captain James Cook sailed into these waters under similar weather conditions, giving Mount Fairweather its name.

Pretty soon a boatload of US National Park rangers joined our ship. We were amazed to see a smaller boat pull right up alongside us. A rope ladder was extended for each of them to crawl onto the ship like pirates. But instead of pillaging our ship, it was backpacks full of treasures that they were actually bringing on board. We were impressed to see the rangers set up an entire makeshift visitor center in one of the Volendam’s lounges.

Being the beginning of October, this was the final cruise of the season to enter Glacier Bay. No big ships will come into these waters again until May. You could sense the excitement in the park rangers as they entered the lounge. One remarked that the sunny weather we were experiencing was a 1-in-100 chance for this time of year. He commented how the ice-capped mountain range in the distance often isn’t visible.

It didn’t take long to begin spotting wildlife. Getting deeper into the icy bay waters, a pair of orca whales briefly popped to the surface in what seemed like a friendly greeting. Dotting the craggy cliffs alongside the ship, fuzzy white balls were moving around in the distance. A pair of binoculars revealed this to be mountain goats scaling the rocky coastline.

It was a novelty to actually be able to spot wildlife on land from the ship, even if it was from afar. Sometimes passengers even see bears while cruising through Glacier Bay. We weren’t that lucky. Although we did see plenty of frolicking harbor seals and even an iconic bald eagle soaring overhead.

Cruising Towards the Bay’s Namesake Glaciers

But the wildlife isn’t the main attraction. It’s the namesake glaciers that draw people to this special place in the world.

What Glacier Bay National Park is known for is its “tidewater glaciers.” These are glaciers that extend right down to the ocean, a rare feat for glaciers since they are often found in high altitude mountaintops. Glacier Bay National Park is unique in that it has the most actively calving tidewater glaciers in the world!

As we journeyed deeper into the bay, the ice in the waters was becoming thicker. It was sparkling in the sunlight as if someone had scattered glitter into the bay waters. It was also an indication that we were nearing the glaciers producing these glimmering icebergs.

The passages around us were becoming tighter. We were amazed at how close the cruise ship would get as it carefully plowed through the iceberg-filled waters to view the Lamplugh Glacier.

We continued to cruise through a mountainous scene that felt like we were drifting right into a postcard for Alaska. It left us breathless. Wow. This was Alaska in all of its glory.

It’s amazing to think that the very waters we were traveling through had been entirely covered by one gigantic sheet of ice just a few hundred years ago.

A few centuries earlier, this bay didn’t even exist. Looking at the ice-covered landscape, it’s not difficult to imagine. Even today, Glacier Bay is a part of the largest non-polar ice field in the world!

We rounded a corner and set course towards the Grand Pacific and Margerie Glaciers. This was the end of the line and the deepest you can get into Glacier Bay.

We marveled at the fact that the big ship managed to get within 400 meters (a quarter-mile) of this magnificent river of ice. While many glaciers around the world are receding, the Margerie Glacier is remaining stable. Yet it still regularly calves icebergs into the water.

The Volendam lingered in this spectacular vantage point making an ultra-slow rotation that lasted for nearly an hour to savor the view of this impressive glacier from many angels. It gave an opportunity to see the glacier from high atop the upper levels of the ship and at eye-level on lower decks.

Although the Volendam was carrying about two-thousand people, it was still easy to find quiet nooks throughout the ship. You could hear the creaking noise of this active glacier.

A Spectacular Sendoff Before Crossing the Pacific

This pause at the Margerie Glacier also provided the chance to actually witness the glacier calving. But an hour into it, no calving ever happened. As we began to depart the glacier, it became apparent that we wouldn’t see this spectacle.

Suddenly the glacier delivered a parting farewell, sending a huge chunk of ice loudly crashing into the sea below. Ripples of waves splashed in our direction. Mother Nature was putting on a show for us and this was an impressive final act.

The amazing day wasn’t quite over though. There was still a long voyage to once again reach the mouth of the bay. As people began to go about their day in the afternoon, we savored the fleeting scenes of Alaskan wilderness. Even as the park rangers departed and the sun got low towards the horizon, stunning Alaska views remained visible throughout the entire day.

This would be our final day within the US until we make it back around to the Atlantic Coast, as we pursue a seemingly impossible travel goal of attempting a  Cheap Cruise Entirely Around the World . We couldn’t envision a more stunning sendoff for a journey around the globe without flights.

From Glacier Bay, we spent another week cruising on the Volendam clear across the Pacific Ocean. What a memorable sight to gaze upon these final glimpses of land before continuing onward all the way to Japan.

It’s all gone down as one of our absolute most favorite national park visits in during recent times in the US. We’d put it right up there with the pleasantly surprising day trip we took to little-visited Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia. And as far as scenic cruising goes, Glacier Bay certainly takes a top spot, right up alongside doing the Panama Canal full transit .

If You Go: Glacier Bay National Park

Glacier Bay is unique within the National Park system in that it is one of the few that is not connected by road. You must either fly in or arrive by boat. The majority of people visiting Glacier Bay National Park see it just as we did, by cruise ship.

These Alaskan cruises including Glacier Bay only occur during the summer months, May-September.

Budget travel tip : For a good deal on a cruise that goes to Glacier Bay, we suggest finding one that departs in May before Memorial Day or in September after Labor Day, when Alaskan cruises start at $500 plus port charges per person. In comparison, during peak summer months, these weeklong (or more) luxury cruises are typically priced well into the thousands of dollars. But during the shoulder season timing you can easily find many Alaskan cruises including Glacier Bay listed for less than $1,000 per person.

Most Alaska cruises have 7-14 day itineraries that depart from Vancouver and Seattle to form a loop, returning to the departure city. Another popular route that includes Glacier Bay is one-way between Vancouver and Anchorage. In May and September, you can also find longer repositioning cruises with particularly attractive rates on more exotic itineraries that may also include traveling to South America, going through the Panama Canal by cruise , or crossing the Pacific to/from Asia. A Brief Review of Holland America Volendam Cruise with Glacier Bay

We went through Glacier Bay National Park on the Holland America Volendam, which we chose based on timing, price, and it fitting our need to get to Asia without flights. Overall we had a pleasant time aboard the Volendam, which was our first on the Holland America cruise line. It was a good experience, although there are other cruise lines that we’ve preferred more. For us, high points on the Volendam was the fantastic cuisine and the many varied enrichment activities. Low points for us was a dull entertainment schedule and an overall lack of fun vibe. Everything else was fairly standard, good quality, and enjoyable of what you’d expect from a 4½-star midsize cruise ship. It made for a particularly awesome way to cross the Pacific Ocean in style!

As it relates to Glacier Bay, the Volendam provided an excellent way to see this spectacular National Park. The ship never felt crowded and they were prepared to help passengers make the most of this day of scenic cruising. Small touches like having wool blankets available on deck chairs and hot mulled wine being served were noticed and welcomed. A novel custom that this Dutch line keeps up is serving hot Dutch pea soup on the bow of the ship while approaching the glaciers to help passengers keep warm. In the chilly weather it was a delicious tradition that we loved!

Overall, we certainly recommend cruising Alaska on the Volendam and give them a good review. But really, we think just about any cruise on a day like this would provide for a great experience to witness the incredible beauty of Alaska!

Glad that wine and gelato made everything better. I got a chance back in the 90s to explore Northern Italy but we only went to Milan. I really need to go back and explore Venice and the islands. Sorry you didnt find George but Lake Cuomo is beautiful.

This 'Alaskan Explorer' Cruise Takes You Whale-watching, Wandering Seaside Towns, and Sailing Right Through Stunning Glacier Bay

There are a great many cruise destinations around the world that I’d like to profess my love for, but the one I will forever rave about is Alaska. And as you’re planning your travel year and scouting cruise destinations, Holland America Line’s 7-Day Alaskan Explorer is an itinerary that should absolutely be on your radar.

Why does Alaska lend itself so well to cruises? The northernmost U.S. state has always been a bucket-list destination, and there are so many coveted sights to see spread throughout the Last Frontier. Once you get a taste, you’ll want to see them all, and cruising is the simplest and most luxurious way to cover as much ground as possible. Enter: Holland America Line’s Signature-class Eurodam ship.

Beyond the ease of getting around on the Eurodam, some of Alaska’s most memorable sights are best seen on the water. Because, you know, what’s better than paying 25-cents to peer through those clunky, iron binoculars (that look like refurbished parking meters) to scout glaciers? Sailing by the glaciers from the comfort of your cruise ship.

Holland America Line’s first trip of 2020 on the 7-Day Alaskan Explorer sets sail in May. And even before feasting your eyes on Alaskan glaciers and wildlife, you’ll get to cruise along one of my favorite coastlines in the world. Californians might argue that the legendary Pacific Coast Highway drive along Big Sur is the world’s best coastline experience, and the Francophiles are bound to favor the Riviera coast running from Nice to Monaco. But in my opinion, one of the most underrated but beautiful coasts is found in northern Washington. And while cruising to Alaska with Holland America Line, you’ll get to sail the Puget Sound and see the Pacific Northwest in its prime before arriving in Alaska.

After a day in Seattle, and a day along the Puget Sound and at sea, you’ll reach the famed Stephens Passage. The passageway starts in the Frederick Sound, which boasts the best whale watching in Alaska. As the sound narrows, you head into the wildly scenic Stephens Passage before winding up in Juneau.

Juneau is the eclectic capital of Alaska, and their quirkiness rivals the likes of Portland and Austin. We should really be saying, "Keep Juneau weird," if you ask me. While in Juneau, cruisers can tour the Mendenhall Glacier, or hike Mount Roberts with their eyes peeled for deer or bald eagles. If you’re looking for a treat-yourself experience, Juneau might be the place to splurge on Holland America Line’s Five Glacier Seaplane Exploration.

Day four brings cruisers to UNESCO World Heritage Site Glacier Bay National Park and Icy Point Strait. And the action continues on days five and six with two important Alaskan ports : Sitka and Ketchikan. If Juneau is the eclectic capital city of Alaska, Sitka is its rugged cousin. A much more remote section of the state, Sitka has a smattering of “Native Alaskan villages, all set amid lush forests and frigid, glacier-flanked waters,” says Holland America Line .

A true wildlife destination, the shore excursions here are all about fishing and otter spotting, and yes, to answer your inevitable question, the otters are exactly as cute as you’re expecting them to be. Ketchikan, on the other hand, feels like it’s straight out of a Scandinavian fairy tale. It is a destination of fjords and colorfully painted houses rising up from the water on stilts, and one of the shore excursions offered here involves a crab feast. Put another way, it’s a dream destination.

While at this point you’ve already seen the Puget Sound, the Frederick Sound, Stephens Passage, multiple glaciers, Seattle, Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan, you get a bonus city on the way back down to Seattle. That bonus city is Victoria, which in my humble Canadian opinion, is one of the most beautiful cities in Canada. Sitting right on the water, the Victoria Harbour views are surreal, and yet the whole city has a decidedly British feel to it.

Seeing this much beauty packed into seven days is, quite frankly, a lot to process. And while, first and foremost, it’s a privilege to see so much of the world’s natural majesty in one trip, you also need to give yourself adequate time to digest it. The serenity of Victoria is the perfect place to do this. Consider taking your day in Victoria to visit the Butchart Gardens where you can unwind amongst the plant life, regroup with the people you’re traveling with, or take some time to yourself.

Seattle is a city of many identities, yet it was its role as a jumping off point for Alaska-bound gold prospectors that put it on the map. The trip begins with pretty views of the city at dusk.

Decompress during a relaxed day at sea as the voyage flows north through the Gulf of Alaska before dipping into the protected water of Alaska's iconic Inside Passage.

After a tranquil morning cruising through Stephens Passage and Gastineau Channel, the cruise docks for the afternoon in Juneau. Spend it visiting the nearby Mendenhall Glacier, exploring the surrounding temperate rainforest by foot, or discovering Juneau's rich mining history on an unforgettable underground gold panning tour.

Overnight, the route winds through a hundred miles of the Inside Passage to arrive at Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in the early morning light. Only two cruise ships enter the park a day. We are planning a cruise to Alaska on Holland America. Never been on this cruise line and have never been to Alaska. I want to know if going to Glacier Bay is worth the extra $200 - $300 per person? If we didn't go to Glacier Bay, would we see glaciers anyway? Thanks.:p

Glacier bay is spectacular. We've seen it a few times and it doesn't disappoint. In our part of the country we can drive 2 hours (whistler) and see a glacier, but Glacier Bay is so much more. If you are coming all the way from Texas to go to Alaska, pay the extra for sure.

What are the alternative itineraries to Glacier Bay?

Glacier Bay itself, if it's a pretty day, is gorgeous! Hubbard Glacier, on a pretty day, has Glacier Bay beat by far.

Either one is an excellent choice.

Do any itineraries still go to College Fjord? That's another area for seeing glaciers, but is not nearly as spectacular as Glacier Bay or Hubbard Glacier, imo.

Tracy Arm is a very pretty ride, but it's a ride for the scenery, and not the limited view of the glacier at the end.

I would definitely choose a cruise that goes to either Glacier Bay or Hubbard Glacier. Too often we missed Tracy Arm so I would not choose a cruise that goes there.

Yes you can go out to Mendenhal Glacier on your own in Juneau -- Blue Bus -- $8 per person each way -- but it is not as beautiful as Glacier Bay or Hubbard Glacier -- JMO.

Plus, if you want a real experience that you will never forget, while in Juneau do a helicopter landing on Mendenhal glacier.

Glacier Bay is beautiful to see from a cruise ship. But if you take a cruise that does not go to Glacier Bay, with the money you save you can take a flightseeing tour over Glacier Bay that shows you much more of Glacier Bay than what can be seen from a cruise ship.

Many passengers choose a ship that goes to Hubbard Glacier and book a flight excursion over Glacier Bay from one of the nearby ports in order to get the best of both.

Hubbard Glacier is larger and more spectacular than any of the glaciers in Glacier Bay. It puts on an amazing show, complete with full booming sound effects, if you hit it on a day when it is actively calving and you have a captain who brings you in close so you get the full show. But it can be very disappointing if you happen to go there on a ship that does not get you close to the glacier.

The most common reason given for a ship turning around without coming close to the glacier is ice in the water. However, even on the same day one cruise ship will go all the way in close to the glacier while another will stop and turn around while miles away.

Glacier Bay is an all day event -- do you get bored easy? Been there, done that?! Do you like to do activities on the ship or just sit and watch? I much preferred Hubbard Glacier for 2 hours and our favorite tour ever was Taku Glacier Lodge -- a seaplane flight seeing over the glaciers with a stop at a Lodge for a salmon dinner -- pricey, but worth it and much more exciting than Glacier Bay. Glacier Bay is absolutely worth the extra cruise fare! It is incredible. We were there in July on the Zuiderdam. The photos from GB are here, if you'd like to have a look:

Whether or not you'd see glaciers anyway depends on the itinerary you choose. If there's no scenic cruising of a fjord or another glacier listed, then you'll have to pick an excursion that will take you to the glaciers in order to see them. The easiest one to get to is Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau.

Moot point. HAL doesn't go to Hubbard Glacier anymore.

....Hubbard Glacier is larger and more spectacular than any of the glaciers in Glacier Bay. It puts on an amazing show, complete with full booming sound effects, if you hit it on a day when it is actively calving and you have a captain who brings you in close so you get the full show. But it can be very disappointing if you happen to go there on a ship that does not get you close to the glacier.      

What are the alternative itineraries to Glacier Bay?   Glacier Bay itself, if it's a pretty day, is gorgeous! Hubbard Glacier, on a pretty day, has Glacier Bay beat by far. Either one is an excellent choice.

Those that seem to prefer Hubbard enjoy seeing such a massive glacier, and it is indeed Massive. I have read what you see from the cruise ship is about 5 miles wide but the glacier turns and goes on for another couple of miles. It is truly an impressive glacier. However, for us, Glacier Bay wins hands down. We much preferred the all day scenic cruising in Glacier Bay that to us was like being in Paradise!!! You won't see a large glacier like Hubbard, but the experience is one we will never forget. We spent most of the day out on deck, taking a quick time-out for lunch. I was simply magnificent. Hubbard was massive, but did not do for us what Glacier Bay did.

On my first cruise to AK, my priority was glacier viewing. Since Hubbard can get iced and fogged out, we decided to choose Glacier Bay and have more of a guarentee of a scenic glacier saiing day. What a fine and memorable experience we had!!!! Now, if they had the itinerary that exists today that goes to both Hubbard and Glacier Bay, that would have been my choice. Unfortunately that itinerary did not exist in 2008. :( Even now it is not offered by Holland America. You have to go to Princess or NCL.

Although I swear I have adult ADD, Glacier Bay never bored me!!! I think you made some good points. What people will like and enjoy does depend a lot on what kind of person they are. My husband and I have never been bored by scenery. We can't get enough of it. Living in the mid-west we don't have the mountains/glaciers you have in Alaska and Canada. We simply can't get enough. In fact, since our first AK cruise was in June, we didn't even get to any shows on the ship. Our entertainment was what was outside the ship where darkness did not happen until past bedtime. We spent as much time as possible out on deck or in the Crow's Nest lounge with its magnificent panoramic views!! We were not going to miss what was outside the ship!

Although it has been several years since we cruised Glacier Bay it is still one of the most incredible days I can remember. I still am in awe when I look at the pictures and remember the sights and sounds. Since that cruise we have been to some fabulous places but Glacier Bay remains in my top 5. Have a great time, Cherie (We were cruising with our three very active young children, our 18 year old niece, and my 80+ year old mother, and not one of us said "I'm bored")

I wanted to make an additional point. Some people are recommending alternatives and excursions instead of Glacier Bay. Be aware that weather is often a factor for the alternatives and you may miss them altogether. We had a Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer excursion booked through the ship, roundtrip out of Juneau. We were supposed to get up close and personal with the Twin Sawyer Glaciers in Tracy Arm from a jetboat. It was cancelled due to weather. It's not uncommon for the cruise ships to skip Tracy Arm altogether if the weather is bad. The flight-seeing excursions out of Juneau and Taku Lodge were also cancelled.

Whatever you book, be aware that in Alaska, weather can always mess with your best laid plans. Be prepared to roll with it! We switched to a whale watching and Mendenhall Glacier excursion and had a great time anyway.

Hubbard Glacier is pretty much all day scenic cruising, too. The sail in, then back out, Yakutat Bay is one of the prettiest rides in the world. The Elias range is the highest coastal mountain range in the world, and to see it encased in snow and ice, with the sun shining on it, makes it sparkle like diamonds. I've seen the baby seals as if they were at play, sliding off the ice floes, then trying their darnest to climb back up---to do it again!

My choice would be Glacier Bay. More to the point is where do you want to sail from? Vancouver you get more of the inside passage. Seattle your more out to sea. Vancouver a lovely city but more expensive to fly into and you have to go thru customs at the airport. Seattle easier to fly into and no customs at the airport.

To the OP -- as you can see, some prefer Hubbard and some prefer Glacier Bay, so it looks like you should see both and decide for yourself. :)

But someone really can't judge fairly based on only a single experience. One trip you may have a better experience at one, and the next time the other one can be much better.

Then there is also Tracy Arm, where you may get iced out, or you may have a wonderful day.

The only solution is to keep going back to Alaska again and again, as so many of us have discovered. :D

On our cruises the Glacier Day cruising time was double the time of the Hubbard Day cruising. We liked our 1/2 day in Hubbard...we stayed outside both going in and out of the bay. However for us, Glacier Bay was simply a more awe-inspiring event. I understand where people in general will all react differently to the same experience. It is good for posters to read how different people think and then they can make a decision that is hopefully good for them. I still think the Princess and NCL itineraries that go to both are jackpot cruises, especially for those who may only be going to AK once in a lifetime.

Thinking about Alaskan cruise in June going from Vancouver on Celebrity Century. Only ever done one cruise before so relatively new to cruising. Some questions -

Is port or starboard better going from Vancouver or does it not matter?

Appreciate the weather is cold ( we come from Scotland so used to that) but what is it like on the ship e.g. dining at night etc. Do you need warmer clothes?

Since you plan to sail Celebrity, you might be better off posting your questions on that board. You'll be able to post follow-up questions to the same people who really have the answers for that line.

But since you're here, let me say that you have chosen a beautiful desitnation!

And yes, it is cold outside, anyway. Warm clothes are the rule, but there very well may be some warm---even hot!---days.

Go see a glacier. You won't forget it. They are beautiful.

Dh and I went to Glacier Bay. I will never forget it. It isn't just a visual memory, because the sounds are awesome.

Glacier Bay Alaskan Adventure

One of our favorite destinations is Alaska, and we’re looking forward to returning again in August of 2024 to Glacier Bay! Join us for this special seven day sailing roundtrip from Seattle. We’ll cruise on Holland America Line’s wonderful Vista Class ship, the Eurodam . You’ll be part of a warm group of fun-loving people sharing a common interest in quilting, and have an opportunity to make new friends, one quilter at a time!

Our classes are held during “at sea” days and we make every attempt to schedule classes outside of port time. There are a wide variety of classes from which to choose, taught by four renown instructors in the world of quilting: Michele Everts, Gail Garber, Chardel Blaine and Rita Lynne!

There’s something wonderful awaiting you in every port of call! You can play tourist, choosing your pleasure whether it be walking, touring, flight-seeing or shopping! All the ports we visit are right in town, and there is a lot to see within walking distance, including quilt shops in every port! Onboard ship you will have the opportunity to perfect your quilting skills with many class choices from our fabulous teachers, as well as myriad opportunities for “SEWCIALIZING” with other people who all share your love of quilting! We will be bringing new sewing machines for your use. You can even go home with a wonderful buy on a new Machine!

Our 7 favorite summer cruises for all types of travelers

The best part of summer cruising is that there are more cruising options than in any other season. Cruises to destinations like Alaska and Scandinavia are highly seasonal; go in the summer, or you can't cruise there at all. Even the Mediterranean is somewhat seasonal, with most cruise lines leaning heavily into summer and moving ships to warmer destinations during the cooler months.

While putting together our list of favorite cruises for summer travel, we looked for options that would appeal to a wide variety of travelers. The one thing all these cruises have in common is that they make planning a summer trip easy. When you book a summer cruise, one transaction gets you transportation to multiple destinations, food, accommodations and onboard entertainment.

Whether you're looking for a short escape or the adventure of a lifetime, here are seven of our favorite summer cruises to book.

Best for short summer escapes: 3- to 5-night Carnival cruises

Carnival Cruise Line is an industry leader in short getaway cruises from local departure ports. You can sail to the Bahamas from Florida ports; Bermuda from Manhattan in New York; the Caribbean from Galveston, Texas , and New Orleans; and the Mexican Riviera from Long Beach, California. Each of these destinations promises beaches, water sports and land-based activities that range from cooking classes to all-terrain-vehicle rides.

Most Carnival ships feature top-deck waterslides and miniature golf, plus Seuss at Sea character parades, storytime and themed breakfasts. The Cloud Nine Spa and adults-only Serenity Retreat give adults a quiet place to relax, whether you cruise with kids or without. Carnival is known for having multiple included food venues like Guy's Burger Joint , Guy's Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que and the Mexican BlueIguana Cantina.

Carnival is also budget-friendly. The line's short cruises are affordable while still providing all the food, fun and entertainment you crave on a big-ship cruise.

Best for grown-up fun: Virgin Voyages to the Mediterranean

Virgin Voyages deploys ships to multiple European destinations, all loaded with summer fun grown-up style. Choices range from seven- to 12-night Mediterranean adventures (think: round-trip cruises from Barcelona featuring ports of call like Cannes in France or Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza in Spain, where ships often stay overnight, allowing time for a night of clubbing European style). Longer cruises include one-way routes between Barcelona and Rome, adding Italian ports like Florence and Naples. The line also takes in the Greek islands on cruises originating in Athens (Piraeus).

Virgin's adults-only ships carry 2,770 passengers (known on board as "sailors"), all 18 or older. The line claims to offer the ideal cruise for adults who don't care for cruises. Entertainment on board includes pajama parties and immersive naughty nightclub performances. Virgin ships focus on wellness with a techno fitness studio , an outdoor gym and a boxing ring.

Dining choices are where Virgin Voyages really breaks from traditional cruise lines. All 20 eateries on board are included in the cruise fare, and you won't find even one buffet line.

Best for solo cruisers: Greek island cruises on Windstar

What better way to sail among the Greek islands than on a gorgeous ship with sails or an intimate yachtlike ship where you never feel like just another number? Windstar Cruises offers summer cruises in the Greek islands, stopping at dream destinations like Santorini, Mykonos and Patmos. Port activities in the Mediterranean lean toward cultural and culinary interests.

What moves the needle toward Windstar for solo cruisers is its standard single supplement of 175%, which dips even lower on occasion. That's quite a cruise budget bonus when most cruise lines charge 200% of the fare for cruising solo.

All Windstar ships carry just over 300 passengers or fewer. You'll feel like you're cruising the Mediterranean on a private yacht. Solo cruisers will find it easy to meet fellow passengers — mixing and mingling are a normal occurrence for almost everyone on such small ships.

The main dining room (Amphora) features solo-friendly open seating each evening. I once met an 82-year-old woman cruising alone on back-to-back Windstar cruises. She had no shortage of invitations to join tables at mealtimes, but when she opted to dine alone, the staff treated her like a queen.

As the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation, Windstar goes above and beyond when it comes to serving amazing food. Menus for both Amphora and a pop-up steak restaurant called Candles are highlighted by selections from James Beard Award-winning chefs — all included in the cruise fare.

Those same chefs are sometimes hosted on the line's special James Beard Foundation cruises. Besides hanging out with these amazing chefs (because they are there to enjoy the cruise, too), guests can go shopping with them as they prepare for menu takeovers using locally sourced ingredients. It's foodie heaven.

Best Alaska cruise: Weeklong Holland America cruises

Alaska sits at the top of many summer cruise wish lists. Sometimes it's a beat-the-heat plan. Most often, it's the desire to see the glaciers and wildlife in Alaskan waters and along its shores. You have lots of options for Alaska cruises, but we recommend the tried and true.

Holland America has been cruising in Alaska for more than 75 years and has more itineraries visiting Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) than any other cruise line. You can feel confident that any Alaska cruise you book with the line will be done well.

Holland America ships carry between 2,000 and 3,000 passengers. While the passengers on other itineraries tend to be a mostly adult (and often senior) crowd, that changes during the summer season in Alaska. Families with children of all ages are welcomed and catered to with youth programs on board, including a Junior Ranger program in Glacier Bay.

Options include round trips from Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seattle , as well as one-way trips between Vancouver and Anchorage, Alaska. Add-on pre- and post-cruise land tours are a Holland America staple for those wishing to explore inland Alaska.

Best for families with teens: Weeklong Caribbean cruises on Royal Caribbean

Finding a cruise itinerary that pleases teens and preteens can be challenging. The megaships Royal Caribbean sails in the Caribbean fit the bill nicely. Look for the line's biggest ships cruising from Miami , Port Canaveral (near Orlando) and Galveston.

Most itineraries alternate between Eastern and Western Caribbean routes , all with beachy ports of call with plenty of water sports and land-based adventure options. Many itineraries also visit the teen-pleasing private island destination Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas. It's an island playground with beaches, a pool, sand sports and a water park seemingly designed with easily bored teens in mind.

The ships themselves, however, are likely to be the real stars of the cruise for your teens. These ships carry close to 6,000 passengers and come loaded with waterslides, surf simulators, zip lines and rock-climbing walls. Teens ages 13 to 17 have a hangout space all their own, and the preteens have loads of age-appropriate activities to keep them on the go when the ship is not in port.

Royal Caribbean's biggest ships are family-pleasing masterpieces, cruising on sunny itineraries that make for incredible summer vacations.

Best for families with littles: Short Bahamas cruises on Disney Cruise Line

Putting smiles on little faces is the mission behind any Disney cruise, and if the littles are smiling, moms and dads probably are, too. Disney sails short cruises from multiple ports. Look for summer cruises to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral with stops at Disney's private island, Castaway Cay . Three to five nights is ideal for kids in the 4 to 7 age group — and their parents.

Disney Cruise Line cabins are designed with families in mind. They have split bathrooms (toilet in one, shower-bath in the other), privacy curtains for napping and plenty of storage.

Besides the fun onboard character encounters, water attractions and live musicals based on favorite movies, Disney cruise ships offer the most kid-friendly menus of any cruise line. Plus, 24-hour in-room dining is complimentary — perfect when the need for a quieter meal arises.

Imagine if the best parts of the Magic Kingdom were put on a ship for a much smaller crowd to enjoy, and you'll understand the magic of a Disney cruise summer vacation.

Best for a cooler European vacation: Scandinavia cruises on Viking

If you're looking for a European getaway where the weather isn't as hot as in the Mediterranean, Scandinavia is calling your name. You can cool down while experiencing the summer beauty of the Norwegian fjords and the cultural delights of Denmark and Sweden. If you're an older adult, Viking has your cruise.

In fact, Viking has multiple options. Cruise lengths range from seven to 28 nights, with a long list of possible ports of call, including Oslo, Norway; Copenhagen; and the Norwegian ports of Bergen, Stavanger and Honningsvag (in the far north). And don't forget Iceland. Viking offers seven-night circumnavigation cruises of the land of fire and ice, as well as longer sailings that include Reykjavik as a port of call.

Viking ships carry just 930 passengers, all in cabins with private balconies. The ships feature seven dining options, all included in the cruise fare. Beer, wine and soft drinks are complimentary during lunch and dinner, and at least one tour is also complimentary in each port of call. Viking is an adults-only cruise line, so all guests must be 18 or older — though its loyal fans tend to be retirees.

Viking ships make seeing the incredible sights of Scandinavia not only possible but comfortable. At the end of a day ashore — sometimes spent on excursions skimming across the waters of fjords in rigid inflatable boats or exploring tiny fishing villages near, or even above, the Arctic Circle — you'll return to relax in one of the best complimentary thermal suites at sea. If that's not enough, you'll also dine on extraordinary cuisine without worrying about extra costs.

Bottom line

Summer is by far the busiest cruise season. Destination choices expand exponentially, giving you more possibilities than in any other season. Even getting to the port, whether driving or flying, is a tad easier in summer than it can be in winter.

The best summer cruise matches your travel needs at this moment. Luckily, an abundance of cruise options makes it possible for almost anyone to find their match.

Put your cruise on silent mode, please: Why ships need to curb noise pollution

When Carnival Corp. ships sail into Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve , a protected area teeming with wildlife and striking landscapes, they go into quiet mode.

The vessels don't make any announcements on outside weather decks, and they also slow down from between 14 and 18 knots – between roughly 16 and 21 mph – to often less than 10 knots.

That way, passengers can see animals like seals lounging on bergy bits, while the ship minimizes disruptions to the marine environment.

“Most often, the ship can transit in a place like Tracy Arm or Endicott Arm or Glacier Bay, and typically, we don't see any of the seals move at all,” said Patrick McGuire, vice president of environmental operations and policy for the company’s Holland America Group, which is comprised of Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Seabourn and P&O Cruises Australia. “So, that's certainly our objective is to not have any noisy interference with marine mammals because that's what everyone comes to see.”

Those kinds of measures are among a number of steps cruise lines have taken to reduce noise pollution from their ships, which has become a point of increased focus in recent years for many cruise lines.

How do cruise ships create noise pollution?

Sound is a common sensory modality for animals underwater, according to Leila Hatch, Research Ecologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, specializing in underwater sound monitoring and management.

“As light degrades, sound travels really efficiently over really large distances, and particularly sounds that are ... low tones on the piano or lower frequency,” she said. A wide range of creatures, from invertebrates to whales, use sounds to communicate with one another and pick up other cues, such as when predators or prey are close by.

Large commercial ships, meanwhile, are the dominant human-generated contributors to low-frequency noise across ocean basins, which can interfere with animals’ ability to hear signals they need to detect. Oceangoing traffic can also add to coastal noise from smaller regional and local vessels in areas like traffic lanes approaching ports.

A ship’s propulsion system is the main culprit in emitting underwater noise, though other machinery can create a vibration that can transmit noise beneath the surface too.

Are cruise ships the main source of noise pollution?

Passenger cruise ships represent significantly less than 1% of all oceangoing vessels, according to Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group. However, Hatch noted that in popular cruise destinations, those ships may make up a larger portion of ships in the area.

Animals in more remote places may also be at higher risk of complications from noise pollution, but that doesn’t mean those living in urbanized environments are accustomed to it.

“Marine animals that depend on habitats where vessel noise levels are persistently high are documented to show higher stress rates, elevated predation risk and lower foraging success,” Hatch said. “These are chronic conditions that become particularly concerning if animals are already vulnerable or endangered. In areas where vessel noise levels have historically been low but traffic is increasing, such as a warming Arctic, animals have the potential for heightened disturbance as they encounter more commonly what has until now been rare noisy events.”

How are cruise ships reducing noise pollution?

Carnival Corp. and Holland America Group have developed protocols for sensitive areas, McGuire said.

Before operating in Glacier Bay, which already limits cruise ship entry to two per day, they conduct underwater sound profiling for the first vessel in each new class by sailing at different speeds, as part of a concession agreement with the National Park Service.

The process is done under the auspices of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, which sends the results to both Carnival Corp. and the park service, and ships are tested at various speeds.

When ships go at higher speeds of around 18 knots, McGuire said propeller cavitation – when vapor bubbles form and dissolve, inhibiting performance and creating noise – is the predominant audible sound source. At lower speeds, the rotation of diesel generators or motors powering functions like air conditioning shows up more clearly. That information allows the operator to evaluate the noise coming from a ship and adjust plans as needed.

Holland America Group cruise lines have measured ship noise in other ways too.

Seabourn Venture, an expedition ship optimized for sailing in polar regions, marked its first class to have its underwater noise level certified by a classification society when the vessel launched in 2022. The voluntary process provides operators with notations that a ship operates within a given sound range.

“So … because these vessels are designed to operate in sensitive areas, we've taken particular attention to have that noise profile measured as well,” McGuire said. Venture’s underwater sound levels came in under the relevant standard, he added.

MSC Cruises has also received “underwater radiated noise” notations for its MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa, MSC World Europa, and MSC Euribia ships, according to Linden Coppell, MSC Cruises’ vice president of sustainability & ESG.

Down the coast from Glacier Bay, Holland America Group ships also cooperate with the Enhancing Cetacean Habitat and Observation Program led by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, which includes several voluntary initiatives to reduce underwater noise from large commercial vessels.

In the waters around northern Washington and southern British Columbia, ships turn off their ultrasonic anti-fouling systems, McGuire said, which help prevent unwanted organisms from attaching to a ship’s exterior, Hatch noted that ultrasonic anti-fouling systems have become increasingly prevalent on cruise ships and other kinds of vessels over the last two or three years, and are “causing some concern in the scientific community” as they emit sounds at a frequency that disturbs some toothed whale species.

“The ECHO Program is aware some ships are equipped with ultrasonic anti-fouling systems and has discussed with some operators the benefits of disabling the technology when transiting through southern resident killer whale critical habitat to further reduce underwater noise,” a spokesperson for the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority said in an email.

Other initiatives aimed at reaching sustainability goals, such as plugging into shore power in port so ships can turn off their engines, have the added benefit of reducing noise, though they may be limited in scale.

Less than 2% of cruise ports worldwide have on-shore power capabilities, though that number is expected to increase to 3% by 2025, according to Cruise Lines International Association’s 2023 State of the Cruise Industry report. Among its member ships, more than half will be equipped to plug into shore power where available by the end of this year.

Coppell said MSC also works closely with shipyards to identify opportunities to further reduce inefficiencies, which she said are often associated with noise. “(With) every ship, there's going to be potentially incremental improvements,” she said.

Those advances may be increasingly important.

“With a larger human population and the globalization of goods, the projectile for how much sound from vessels is in the world's oceans is sort of ever-growing,” Hatch said.

NOAA works to highlight the circumstances that may pose risks to marine life, Hatch said.

"(Noise) has increasingly well-understood physiological consequences for animals, and if they are already having a hard time making a living in the ocean, then that is a stressor we have to address," she said. "We have to figure out ways to improve the quality of that habitat."
