Reservations are not necessary and tickets can be purchased at the attraction ticket window. During a typical season the boat rides below Niagara Falls opens in late April or early May and runs until mid to late October.

All guests are issued a disposable plastic poncho to wear during the tour which will keep you reasonably dry. When the boat gets close to the Canadian Falls is where you will encounter the majority of mist. If you wish to stay dry simply move to another location on the boat where there is less mist. The tour lasts 15-20 minutes. For clothing, summer is for shorts and t-shirts. A pair of beach shoes or sneakers work fine but don’t wear anything you wouldn’t want to get damp. For spring and fall weather you need to dress appropriately for the local weather and just expect to get slightly damp. Usually you will have the ability to get great photos right up until you get close to the base of the Canadian Falls. Remember that even a slight mist on your camera lens will ruin any photo!

The entrance is in Queen Victoria Park less than a minute walk from the base of Clifton Hill. Parking is available at one of three very large parking lots near Queen Victoria Park. The closest parking lot which does require taking stairs to the park is on Clifton Hill and aptly named Clifton Hill Parking . For navigation use:  4960 Clifton Hill Parking , Niagara Falls Ontario Canada.

Skylon Tower parking lot is very close to the Clifton Hill Parking lot and you can either take stairs or the sidewalk on Murray St to get to the park. For navigation use:  Skylon Tower parking lot 5200 Robinson Street Niagara Falls Ontario Canada.

Niagara Parks parking lot use:  Niagara Falls Lot #1 6650 Niagara Pkwy, Niagara Falls Ontario Canada.

If the Niagara Parks lot is full when you enter they will direct you to one of their satellite lots which then requires using the WEGO shuttle bus service. This lot usually never fills to capacity except during the months of July and August. If you plan on visiting the brink of the Canadian Falls at Table Rock during your visit this is the most convenient parking lot to use.

This video displays the old Maid of the Mist boat passing in front of the American Falls.

Hornblower Boat Tours of Niagara Falls, Canada

Jane McLean

The most popular thing to do in Niagara Falls , aside from strolling the boardwalk is the Hornblower ferry ride that takes passengers into the mist and furor of the Falls themselves.

What Is Hornblower?

  • Hornblower Niagara Cruises replaced the Maid of the Mist as the ferry operator on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls in 2014. The Maid of the Mist still runs ferry tours on the American side of Niagara Falls.
  • Hornblower Niagara Cruises offers two boat tours that operate from morning through the evening: The first is the daytime  Voyage to the Falls and the second is the Evening Cruise in which passengers can enjoy fireworks or the illuminated waterfalls at night.
  • Hornblower's Voyage to the Falls is a 20-minute ride on a double-decker boat that takes you through the Niagara Gorge and up close to Niagara Falls - both the American Falls and the Canadian Falls - so that you can feel the spray and get a sense of the power of the water flow.
  • The boat stops and lingers at the foot of the Falls, 170 feet (52 meters) below the brink.
  • Be prepared to get wet; fortunately, disposable rain ponchos come with admission.

Where to Catch a Tour

Hornblower boat rides set sail from the Canadian side of Niagara Falls at the foot of Clifton Hill. Maid of the Mist is the boat tour that launches from the U.S. side of the Falls.

When Does Hornblower Boat Tours Operate?

Depending on weather conditions, Hornblower boat tours generally operate between April and October. Hornblower boat tours leave about every 15 - 20 mins between 7:45 am and 4:45 - 7:45 pm, depending on the time of the season.

How Do I Get Tickets?

Tickets for Hornblower are available at the foot of Clifton Hill at the entrance to the boarding dock. Admission to Hornblower is also available as part of any number of guided Viator Niagara Falls tours that may include transportation from Toronto, helicopter ride , and other attractions. Buying tickets online before your visit is advisable especially on weekends.

Is the Tour Accessible for Strollers and Wheelchairs?

Yes, all parts of the Hornblower tour are wheelchair and stroller accessible. Parents can leave strollers on shore before boarding the Hornblower if they wish.

  • Parking is available at the south end of the Falls viewing area near McLeod Road, which is a 10-minute walk to the Maid of the Mist.
  • A large lot is at the end of Robinson Street.
  • Parking at the Butterfly Conservatory is free, but a 10 min drive away. From the Butterfly Conservatory, take the People Mover, which will drive you around Niagara's attractions all day for a flat fee.

Experience the Thrill of a Lifetime

The Hornblower Niagara Cruises , the best way to experience Niagarafalls, Canada’s most spectacular wonder of the world. Hornblower Niagara Cruises is the official Canadian operator of boat tours to Niagara Falls and is located along the Niagara Parkway at the base of Clifton Hill in the Tourist District. The Maid of the Mist , which had been operating boat tours at The Falls since 1846, has re-located to the U.S. side of the Falls. Both of them follow the same route up to and back from the Falls.

Within the Niagara Great Gorge the boat travels past the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and into the very heart of the famous Horseshoe Falls for an exciting experience with the waterfalls.

Hornblower Niagara Cruises has two brand-new 700 seats catamarans (Niagara Thunder & Niagara Wonder), with facilities such as enclosed-glass viewing areas and tiered viewing decks on the top levels.

Hornblower Niagara Cruises have sunset cocktail cruises that include the voyage to the Falls with time to mingle and enjoy the bottom of the gorge.

Hornblower won a 30-year contract to be the sole tour operator on the Canadian side of the Falls after a bidding process conducted by the Niagara Parks Commission in 2012.

Hornblower also offers a couple of different types of cruises, including a falls illumination cruise and fireworks cruise

Hornblower Niagara Cruises have switched from the traditional blue coloured rain slickers to red.

Hornblower’s Niagara Falls cruises include:

  • The Voyage to the Falls: An early morning sunrise cruise, which features an up-close view of the Niagara Gorge, American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. Cruises continue throughout the day.
  • A Sunset Cocktail Cruise: Guests get to sample Niagara wines and beverages and watch the sun set on the Falls.
  • The Falls Illumination Cruise: Highlights panoramic views of city lights and multi-coloured illumination of The Falls with a licensed bar and snacks on board.
  • Falls Fireworks Cruise: On weekends and holidays, visitors can cruise with views of the illuminated Falls and fireworks display. A licensed bar and snacks are also available.

In the year 2019, Hornblower Niagara Cruises won the City of Niagara Falls Environment Award by The Park in the City for the collective efforts in operating in an environmentally responsible manner while creating Amazing Experiences for millions of visitors each year.

Hornblower Cruises has a storied history that began in 1974 with just two ships sailing in Berkeley, California. In 1980, the company changed ownership and moved its focus to San Diego, San Francisco, Newport Beach, and Marina del Rey, expanding quickly by acquiring other charter yacht businesses. The company’s headquarters, located at the iconic Steel Electric-class Santa Rosa ferry anchored at Pier 3 in San Francisco, remains there to this day.

In 1992, the company was renamed Hornblower Cruises & Events under the sole ownership of Terry MacRae, who recognized that the company wasn’t just a cruise operator for businesses but also for special events like marriage ceremonies, film shoots, soirées, and more! Hornblower Cruises & Events has continued to grow, and in 2019, it acquired Entertainment Cruises, which doubled the number of ferries and locations where they operate. Today, with a fleet of over 80 ships, Hornblower sails from 19 different ports, a far cry from its humble beginnings.

Hornblower Canada Company now operates the Niagara Falls Gorge Boat Tour from the Canadian side of the Niagara River, near the magnificent Niagara Falls. The Niagara Falls Cruises previously belonged to the Maid of the Mist, which now sails out of Niagara Falls, New York. The Niagara Falls Cruises have two impressive ships – the Niagara Wonder and Niagara Thunder – with a capacity of up to 700 passengers each.

Niagara City Cruises By Hornblower Vs Maid of the Mist

maid of the mist boat next to the american falls in niagara

Before I even started planning a trip to Niagara Falls, I knew I wanted to do the Maid of the Mist boat ride.  It’s the iconic thing to do, right? Well, once I started doing my research, I learned there is also the option of doing Hornblower Niagara Cruises (now called Niagara City Cruises anchored by Hornblower).

I wasn’t sure how to choose the best Niagara Falls boat tour or if we should try to do both?  Our time was limited, so realistically we needed to pick either the Maid of the Mist or the Hornblower.

I wanted to share my personal experience and research with you to help make the Niagara City Cruises by Hornblower vs Maid of the Mist decision easier for you.

Niagara Falls Boat Tour Price Differences

How to choose the best niagara cruise, niagara falls night cruise, what to expect on a niagara falls cruise, niagara falls boat trip video, maid of the mist tickets, hornblower niagara cruise tickets, maid of the mist or hornblower niagara cruise, expert tips for your niagara falls boat tour, hornblower vs maid of the mist: what’s the difference.

The biggest difference between Niagara City Cruises by Hornblower and the Maid of the Mist is the history.

You may remember the Hornblower cruise we did to Alcatraz Island last year.  While Hornblower has been around for over 35 years, they have only been offering cruises on the Niagara River since 2014.  The Maid of the Mist first carried passengers across the river in 1846! In 1848, when the bridge across the river opened, demand for the Maid of the Mist fell.  They rebranded the Maid of the Mist as a tourist boat and it has been taking passengers ever since.

Honestly, there isn’t much of a difference between the two Niagara Falls tours.  Both boats take basically the same route on the 20-minute long cruise and go close to all three of the waterfalls (the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls) that make up Niagara Falls.  The Hornblower Cruise is the boat tour in Niagara Falls, Canada and the Maid of the Mist docks on the American side, literally across the river from each other.

As of 2022, Hornblower does require proof of vaccination along with identification and masks to keep passengers safe.  Get details of their SafeCruise policy here .  Maid of the Mist does not have any vaccination or mask requirements.

Only Hornblower Cruises offers the Niagara Falls Fireworks Cruise.  The weekend we were in Niagara there were no fireworks so we didn’t get the chance to do the evening boat tour.  UPDATE : As of 2022, the night time boat cruises are no longer being offered.

Niagara boat cruise prices are pretty similar, but the Hornblower cruise is a little bit more.

You pay for the Hornblower Cruise Niagara Falls in Canadian Dollars and the Maid of the Mist in US Dollars.  Similarly, the Hornblower Cruise is included in the Canada attraction packages and the Maid of the Mist is in the American ones. (More on Getting Tickets Below)

The cost difference for the cruises might be more if you have kids.  Maid of the Mist is free for kids 5 and under with an accompanying adult, while Hornblower only lets kids 2 and under on for free.  It is a minor detail, but if you have twin 5-year-olds like one of my readers, Pauline, it can add up.

Both cruises provide all guests with ponchos.  Spoiler alert: you will need them!  The Maid of the Mist poncho is blue and the poncho for the Hornblower Cruise is red.  As long as you get a poncho, that should be fine.  Color should not be a deciding factor in choosing your Niagara Falls Boat Tour!

You can see the river looks pretty calm heading towards the Horseshoe Falls. - "Hornblower Niagara Cruises Vs Maid of the Mist" - Two Traveling Texans

Since the differences between the two Niagara Falls boat tours are insignificant, the deciding factor is which side of Niagara Falls you are on.  Border crossing does take time, and there are fees (only a few dollars) whether you walk across the Rainbow Bridge or drive across the border.

If you are on the American side, then do the Maid of the Mist.  If you are on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, then it makes more sense to do the Niagara City Cruise.  We were staying on the Canadian side, so we decided to take the Hornblower.  We could have also done the Maid of the Mist if we would have done the boat ride the same day we did the Cave of the Winds since that is on the American side of the falls.

Additionally, the season for Hornblower cruises is slightly longer than the Maid of the Mist.  Hornblower operates their daytime cruises from April 1st until November 30th, weather permitting.  Maid of the Mist ends their season in early November.  (If your trip is during the off-season, check out these ideas for things to do in Niagara Falls in the winter .)

If you are concerned about COVID, Hornblower does have the vaccination and mask requirements to reduce your risk.  Those who are not vaccinated would only have the option of going on the Maid of the Mist.

Luckily, regardless of what boat you choose, it will be an experience you will always remember.  We had a great time!

UPDATE : As of 2022, the night time boat cruises are no longer being offered.

Only Hornblower offers cruises to see Niagara Falls at night.  You can do the Niagara Falls Fireworks Cruise on evenings when there are fireworks scheduled.  The evening cruises run from the beginning of May until the end of October.  This is one of the most romantic things to do in Niagara Falls .

These cruises last 40 minutes and do sell out quickly, so you will want to get your tickets in advance.  The evening cruise is more expensive than the daytime ones because it is longer.  In 2019, Tickets for adults cost $42.95 CAD and $27.95 CAD for kids 12 and under.  I should also mention that these extended night cruises do include a cash bar, light snacks for purchase, and music.

The Horseshoe Falls is where the boat ride really gets intense! - - "Hornblower Niagara Cruises Vs Maid of the Mist" - Two Traveling Texans

Hornblower does also offer 20-minute long Voyage to the Falls Evening cruises as well for the same price as the daytime cruise.  During this cruise, you would also get to see the falls illuminated.

All the evening cruises are described as a “light mist experience” rather than the “full mist experience” of the daytime cruises.  I am guessing with the “light mist experience” you would still get wet.  The boats do have indoor areas if you want to make sure you stay completely dry.  I’m not sure you would get the full experience if you stay inside the whole cruise though.

You feel a little mist from the American and Bridal Veil Falls. - "Hornblower Niagara Cruises Vs Maid of the Mist" - Two Traveling Texans

My experience on my Niagara boat tour was different than I expected.  I thought that as we got close to the Falls the water would get pretty rough.  That wasn’t the case.  The water seemed to be pretty calm but the mist and wind were much more powerful than what I expected.

You need that poncho and you need to tie it tight.  I had to hold on to poncho in order to keep my hair somewhat dry.  Even with holding onto my poncho my hair did get wet though!

Since you will get wet anyway, it could be a good thing to do when it is raining in Niagara .  Looking back it would have been nice to have some waterproof covers for our shoes ( like these ).  Even with shoe covers, you still need to allow time for the rest of you to dry!

We were happy we were able to go back to the hotel and change before dinner.  If you do your Niagara boat tour on a chilly day, you will want to get out of your wet clothes as soon as possible.  Ladies, you will also want to be sure to bring waterproof mascara !

We used a GoPro Hero 5 Black for our video.  It is waterproof and great for capturing action video like this. (Note: We have since upgraded to the GoPro Hero 7 Black and love it – click here to check price and availability for the GoPro 7 ).

Buying Niagara Falls Boat Tour Tickets

Unlike many other popular tourist attractions, you do not need to buy tickets for the Maid of the Mist or the Hornblower in advance.  The boats run frequently and carry hundreds of people, so they don’t sell out.

While you can buy tickets online, you cannot book a specific tour time for daytime cruises.  We bought our tickets at the booth in front of the Hornblower Cruise when we were ready to do the boat ride.

It may seem like there is a long wait for the tours, but since boats are large and run every 15 minutes the lines will move reasonably fast.  During peak days, I would recommend going early to minimize your wait time.

It wasn’t crowded when we went, so we could have gotten right on when we got to the dock but we decided to wait and be the first people to board the next boat.  That way we could get the best seat – well, place to stand. You don’t need to worry about where you end up standing though. Visibility is limited and you’re going to get wet anyway!

For Maid of the Mist, you can purchase tickets online in advance here but they are not for a specific day or time.  For 2022, adults tickets cost $25.25 USD and children tickets (ages 6-12) are $14.75 USD.  Remember children 5 and under are free with an accompanying adult.

If you are looking for a Maid of the Mist discount and plan on seeing other attractions on the New York side of the Falls, you may want to purchase the Niagara Falls USA Discovery Pass .

After the cruise, we may be wet but we were all smiles! - - "Hornblower Niagara Cruises Vs Maid of the Mist" - Two Traveling Texans

We purchased our tickets at the terminal right before the cruise, but you can purchase online in advance to save time.  Tickets purchased online here .  It costs $32.00 CAD plus HST for adults and $22.00 CAD plus HST for kids ages 5-12 (Summer 2022 pricing).  Children 2 and under are free.

For the daytime tickets, you can choose a specific day but not a specific time.  Your tickets are an email with a barcode which you can either print out or show on your phone (you must be online).  If you wait to purchase the tickets until you arrive, you can opt out of the funicular and save $3 CAD, but you may have to wait in line.

For the evening cruises, I would recommend booking as early as possible because tickets are limited and they do sell out.  You can also save money by buying the Day & Night Cruise package.

Going on a Niagara Falls boat cruise should be on your bucket list.  Both the Maid of the Mist and the Hornblower Niagara Cruise offer similar experiences.  Don’t feel like you have to choose the Maid of the Mist because of the iconic name, the Hornblower can be a good alternative especially if you stay on the Canadian side.  Whichever boat ride you choose, I am sure you will love it.

Have you been on either the Hornblower Niagara Cruises or the Maid of the Mist or both? I would love to hear about your experience.

✔️ When planning your itinerary ahead of travel , keep in mind that certain times of the year, such as fireworks displays and peak tourist seasons, may require more advanced booking due to high demand and the possibility of higher prices.

✔️ When preparing for your cruise, it’s recommended to check the weather and dress accordingly. The mist from the falls can create a chill, so bringing along a light jacket or waterproof attire is advised.

✔️ Be sure to also bring your camera or smartphone to capture the breathtaking sights.

My Experience

The Hornblower cruise allowed me to stand at the heart of this natural wonder, surrounded by the thunderous roar and the shimmering mist that created enchanting rainbows. With each passing moment, I could sense the power of the falls, the roaring and force of the cascade that has shaped the landscape over countless years.

I secured a spot on the open deck, near the pole for an immersive experience. The boat navigated expertly through the elements. I had clear enough views to embrace the falls’ magnificence. It wasn’t just a boat ride; it was an immersion into the very soul of nature’s strength: mist, sprinkles and splashes! Short of being drenched! Reflecting on that experience, I felt as if I had been transported to a realm where the boundaries between the human-made and the natural were beautifully blurred. There’s nothing quite like experiencing the Horseshoe Falls from the Hornblower cruise firsthand. It certainly was an experience I’d never forget.

I resorted to various combination tickets for my experiences of Niagara Falls. One of the options included the Hornblower and the Journey Behind the Falls and you can find the option here .

Hornblower – Canada Side Niagara Falls Boat Tour

Hornblower – Canada Side Niagara Falls Boat Tour

Niagara Falls, Ontario, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Canada. It is a popular honeymoon and vacation destination too.

Of all the attractions it has to offer, the Hornblower Niagara Cruise is perhaps the best. This Canada side Niagara Falls Boat Tour is available from May to October-early November.

This Niagara Falls boat tour was formerly called Maid of the Mist. In 2012, Hornblower was awarded a 30-year contract to operate the Niagara Falls boat tour from Canada. From May 2014, Hornblower Niagara Cruises became the official boat tour operator on the Canadian side of the Niagara River. The Niagara Falls Boat Tour Canada side was renamed Hornblower Niagara Cruises.

Hornblower Niagara Cruises operates two types of boat tours on the Canadian side – Voyage to the Falls Boat Tour and Falls Fireworks Cruise.

Voyage to the Falls Boat Tour – A Hornblower Niagara Boat Cruise

This Niagara Falls Boat Tour is a daytime tour and its duration is 20 minutes. It is a full mist experience – you are so close to the Falls, its spray drenches you.

The boat ride starts on the Canadian side of the Niagara River and takes you through the Niagara Gorge and up close to the Falls. Travel past the Bridal Veil and American Falls, and finally reach the Horseshoe Falls.

The boat hovers near the base of the Horseshoe Falls for a few seconds so you can feel the spray from the Falls and witness the powerful currents of the river.

All passengers get rain ponchos to protect them from the Falls’ spray.

Falls Fireworks Cruise – the Evening Hornblower Niagara Cruise

Falls Fireworks Cruise – the Evening Hornblower Niagara Cruise

Duration of the boat ride is from 9:30-10:10 p.m. Passengers can view the Falls illuminated in beautiful colours and watch fireworks light up the sky above at 10:00 p.m.

There is a licensed bar onboard where you can buy craft beers, fine Niagara wines, and snacks. Enjoy the views of the glittering Niagara Falls city skyline, the illuminated Falls and the fireworks display.

Tickets for Falls Fireworks Cruise are limited. Book them in advance to avoid disappointment.

How to Get Tickets for Hornblower Niagara Cruise?

Tickets are available at the entrance to the boarding dock on Niagara Parkway.

To avoid long lines, you can book your tickets online.

Niagara Falls, Ontario

The powerful border-straddling Niagara Falls is actually composed of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls (also known as Canadian Falls). Combined, these cascades have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world—more than a million bathtubs of water plummet over the edge every second. While they’re wildly impressive from the US, here’s how to explore the Canadian side.

Few things beat a Niagara Falls boat ride—take to the water on Hornblower Niagara, the most popular Canadian vessel, for a daytime, evening, nighttime, or fireworks experience and fantastic views. Alternatively, head into the 130-year-old tunnels and observation deck behind Horseshoe Falls on a Journey Behind the Falls tour; get bird’s-eye views on a flightseeing tour; or marvel at the cascades from the Skylon Tower, a 520-foot (160-meter) observation tower with a revolving restaurant.

If you visit the falls on a boat tour, prepare to get wet from the mist—which, of course, is all part of the thrill.

To experience Niagara Falls on a Maid of the Mist tour, you’ll need to cross to the US side; some Canadian tours offer cross-border transportation.

If you've opted for a Maid of the Mist ride, be sure you have appropriate documentation to enter both Canada and the US.

Opting for a small-group or a private tour can make the experience feel more personal; however, a large-group bus tour is a more economical way to visit.

Every night after dark, the falls are illuminated by a spectacular light show—a Niagara Falls night cruise is a great way to see it.

You can reach Niagara Falls from Toronto by bus, train, or car. Once you’re there, you can get around the town of Niagara Falls by shuttle bus. Drivers can find plentiful parking in the area’s lots.

Summer is prime time for Niagara Falls visits, as it’s the best season for boat tours, which generally run from April through November. There’s also a Niagara Falls fireworks show several times weekly during the summer months. In winter there’s still plenty to see and do at the falls, including snowshoeing and ice climbing.

If you have extra time during your visit to Niagara Falls, Eastern Ontario is a burgeoning wine region well worth exploring on a wine tour during the balmier months. Food tours are also popular ways to sample the region’s fresh and distinctive offerings. Other activities outside of a Niagara Falls tour include Clifton Hill (a massive entertainment promenade), Bird Kingdom, Marineland, and the Aquarium of Niagara (in New York).

  • Niagara Falls isn't just one waterfall but a trio of wonders .
  • The city boasts a flurry of activities, from adventure to relaxation.
  • Wineries, festivals , and hidden spots enhance the experience.

Why Niagara Falls Deserves More Than A Day Trip

According to a report by the Niagara Falls Tourism Bureau, the city welcomes over 14 million visitors each year, making it one of the most visited tourist destinations in Canada .

But are all these visitors just coming for the falls?

The Triple Threat: Understanding the Falls

Fact : The Niagara Falls isn’t just one giant cascade.

It comprises three different waterfalls: the American Falls , the Bridal Veil Falls , and the Horseshoe Falls .

The last one is the big star, mostly located on the Canadian side.

It's not just a sight; it's an experience!

Unmissable Activities Around The Falls

Journey behind the falls.

Descending into the heart of Niagara, the journey behind the falls offers an intimate rendezvous with this natural wonder.

As the name suggests, this isn't your typical viewpoint; it's a subterranean odyssey that takes visitors through a network of tunnels carved out over a century ago.

The echoing roar of the falls grows louder as you approach the observation decks, offering a rare glimpse of water cascading at an overwhelming force mere feet away.

Each droplet tells a story of time, erosion, and nature's indomitable will. The ambient moisture, the coolness in the air, and the thundering sound create an atmosphere that's both surreal and exhilarating.

Here, you're not just observing Niagara Falls, you're experiencing its very essence, feeling its pulse, and becoming a part of a moment where nature's grandeur takes the front seat, and human insignificance is felt more profoundly than ever.

Hornblower Niagara Cruises

The vast expanse of cascading waters, set against the sky, offers a perspective that’s both humbling and grand.

As the boat drifts along, guided narratives shed light on intriguing facts and tales associated with the falls.

Whether you choose the day cruise with rainbows arching above or the evening one with illuminations casting a magical glow on the waters, Hornblower ensures an immersive experience, making the iconic falls more than just a sight but a memory etched in every fiber of your being.
