The organization of the tour schedule looks to be a bit hectic. The Osaka show In July could be lumped in w/ the Tokyo one on the same week in May. After Manila, iKon goes to Europe for 3 shows only to go back to SEA again (Singapore). They go back to Europe in July and go back to Asia for a 3rd time afterwards. The travel costs may be higher bc of this. On another note, it's cool for iKon to play Denver. There aren't a ton of big K-Pop acts who play there.

Ahead Of Juneteenth, Mayor Adams Announces Creation Of Interactive Audio Tour Exploring City’s Abolitionist History

June 6, 2024

‘More Than a Brook: Brooklyn Abolitionist Heritage Walk’ Explores Brooklyn’s Role in National Abolitionist Movement and Underground Railroad Across City Landmarks

Announcements Build on Adams Administration’s Investment Towards Racial Equity and Justice

NEW YORK – Ahead of Juneteenth, New York City Mayor Eric Adams today announced the creation of “ More Than a Brook: Brooklyn Abolitionist Heritage Walk ,” an interactive audio tour that explores Brooklyn’s history as a critical neighborhood for the National Abolitionist Movement and the Underground Railroad. The audio tour can be accessed on a smartphone, tablet, or other device through the Landmark Preservation Commission’s (LPC) website . The interactive audio tour was commissioned by LPC and created by Kamau Studios and Black Gotham Experience . This project was supported by a grant from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation and financed in part with federal funds from the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.

“New Yorkers walk through Brooklyn every day, unaware of the history right under their feet and surrounding them,” said Mayor Adams . “This interactive audio tour allows all of us to celebrate the heroes who stood up against injustice, risked their lives, and fought for the freedom they deserved. To build a better future, we must first examine and understand our past. This Juneteenth, our city recommits to reckoning and recognizing our role in the historic fight for racial equity and justice.”

“I congratulate the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s collaboration with Kamau Ware Studios and the Black Gotham Experience for shining a light on Brooklyn’s abolitionist heritage, and the city’s role in fighting against slavery,” said  Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development, and Workforce Maria Torres-Springer . “I also thank New York State’s Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation for funding this worthy project.”

“New York City’s designated landmark sites and historic districts tell our shared story, and Brooklyn is home to an incredible collection of historic landmark buildings that connect us to our past and highlight the central role New Yorkers played in the fight against slavery,” said  LPC Chair Sarah Carroll . “This immersive audio tour lifts up their stories, honoring the memory of those who suffered and fought for justice and freedom. This Juneteenth is a reminder that the fight for equity is part of our collective heritage as New Yorkers and we must work to create a more just and fairer city for future generations to come.”

“Juneteenth provides us the opportunity to reflect on the wrongs of the past while honoring the resiliency of those that came before us and sacrificed so much,” said  New York City Chief Equity Officer and New York City Mayor's Office of Equity & Racial Justice Commissioner Sideya Sherman . “We commend the Landmarks Preservation Commission and partners Kamau Ware Studio and the Black Gotham Experience for reconciling our past with our present and showcasing our city’s pivotal role in the national abolitionist movement. Through this interactive heritage walk, New Yorkers can learn from and examine our past while fully immersed in the city we all know and love.”

“Our public spaces are where New Yorkers connect — not just with their neighbors and with the great outdoors, but also with our history,” said  New York City Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Sue Donoghue . “Thanks to this creative collaboration, New Yorkers will discover Brooklyn’s rich abolitionist heritage while experiencing our historic buildings and treasured greenspaces in a brand-new way. With Juneteenth around the corner, this audio tour is an important contribution to our ongoing efforts to uplift Black history and ensure our city is equitable and just for all New Yorkers.”

New York City played an important role in the effort to abolish slavery nationwide and assist those seeking to escape it. The neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Fulton Ferry, Downtown Brooklyn, and Fort Greene contain a walkable concentration of important historic landmark sites associated with New York City’s abolitionist history, the Underground Railroad, and the larger anti-slavery movement before the Civil War through political and religious activism.

The three-part audio experience guides participants through Brooklyn's rich abolitionist history, incorporating 19 stops and highlighting the many landmark sites along a 4.5-mile walkable path, including the residences of abolitionist Lewis Tappan and Harriet and Thomas Truesdell, and religious spaces, including Plymouth Church, Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, and the Friends Meeting House. The audio tour also introduces important local historic figures in the abolition movement, including businesswoman Elizabeth Gloucester, pioneering sisters Dr. Susan Smith McKinney-Steward and educator Sarah J. Tompkins Garnet, and Plymouth Church preacher Henry Ward Beecher, highlighting all their stories to illuminate the multiple ways people and institutions engaged with the anti-slavery movement before the Civil War and the continued fight for freedom afterward.

The “More Than a Brook: Brooklyn Abolitionist Heritage Walk” reflects LPC’s ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion in all their work as part of the agency’s Equity Framework ; its efforts to preserve places that tell the story of all New Yorkers and reflect their collective heritage, making the significant history embodied in landmarks more accessible; and expanding educational outreach efforts to reach new and diverse audiences. Additional resources can be found on LPC’s website, including LPC’s interactive story maps, “ New York City and the Path to Freedom ,” which explores New York City’s abolitionist history across all five boroughs through designated landmarks that embody it and “ Preserving Significant Places of Black History ,” which highlights and explores buildings, sites, and historic districts significant to Black history throughout New York City.

Mayor Adams announced new economic data showing that the  unemployment rate for Black New Yorkers has significantly decreased  since the start of the administration. Between January 1, 2022, and April 1, 2024, the Black unemployment rate in the five boroughs decreased from 10.7 percent to 7.9 percent — a 26 percent decrease. This marks the first time since 2019 that the Black unemployment rate in New York City has been below 8 percent.

“With Juneteenth upon us, I am proud that we are launching this Heritage Walk to tell the world about New York City’s abolitionist history,” said New York State Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar . “This interactive walking tour will bring to life the integral role Brooklyn played in the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement. People from all over the world will learn what New Yorkers did to stamp out the moral blight of slavery, and Brooklynites will take pride in their neighborhood knowing this rich history. This exemplifies our goal to uplift all communities and share everyone’s history in our Gorgeous Mosaic.”

“As we approach Juneteenth, it's essential to remember and honor New York City's pivotal role in the fight against slavery,” said  New York State Senator James Sanders Jr . “This interactive audio tour highlights the courageous efforts of those who fought for freedom in our nation and is crucial to understanding our past and inspiring our future!”

“Brooklyn has a rich abolitionist history, and the echoes of that fight for freedom and justice can be felt at historic sites around the borough, including at many in the neighborhoods I have the honor to represent,” said  New York   State Senator Andrew Gounardes .   “This audio tour is a way to uplift and celebrate this history, and to help New Yorkers learn about the many people and institutions engaged in the fight against the evils of slavery. As we approach Juneteenth, this audio tour is an opportunity to learn from the past while charting a course toward a future of true freedom, liberty and justice for all.”

“The abolitionists’ fight for freedom in New York cannot become forgotten history as we continue to tackle discrimination to this day,” said  New York State Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn . “I applaud Mayor Eric Adams for launching an innovative program highlighting and teaching Brooklyn's history as a crucial launchpad for the National Abolitionist Movement and the Underground Railroad as we keep advancing equality.”

“I want to thank Mayor Adams for shedding light on the history of the Abolitionist Movement and the Underground Railroad here in New York City,” said  Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson . “With this initiative, he is ensuring residents and visitors alike can immerse themselves in our city`s past and our contributions to the fight for racial justice and equity.”

“‘More Than a Brook’ brings Brooklyn's rich abolitionist history to broad audiences and offers a glimpse into who we are as a borough and a people,” said  Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso . “Oral history is the perfect tradition and vehicle to reckon with the past and honor the ongoing fight for a more equitable future based in racial and social justice. Thank you to Mayor Adams for expanding access to the stories that helped build our city and free our ancestors from slavery.”

“I'm thrilled to see the launch of the 'More Than a Brook: Brooklyn Abolitionist Heritage Walk' just in time for Juneteenth,” said  New York City Councilmember Kamilah Hanks . “This interactive audio tour is a powerful tool that will bring to life Brooklyn's rich history in the National Abolitionist Movement and the Underground Railroad. By making this history accessible on smartphones and tablets, we are ensuring that the stories of those who fought for freedom and justice are preserved and shared with future generations. I commend Mayor Adams, the Landmark Preservation Commission, Kamau Studios, and Black Gotham Experience for their incredible work on this project.”

“Brooklyn Bridge Park is thrilled to be a stop on the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission’s Brooklyn Abolitionist Heritage Walk and audio tour,” said Brooklyn Bridge Park President Eric Landau . “By retracing the steps of abolitionists and amplifying their stories, we not only honor their legacy, but also reaffirm Brooklyn’s commitment to justice and equality. This tour sheds light on Brooklyn Bridge Park's role in a crucial piece of this city’s history and will bring us towards a more compassionate and equitable future.”

“More Than A Brook is a walk through Brooklyn that connects historic locations to illustrate a portrait of 19th century communities resisting the institution of slavery. The concentration of characters that walked the docks onto city streets is significant to the history of New York State and the United States,” said Black Gotham Experience, founder, Kamau Ware . “It is commendable that the Landmarks Preservation Commission is opening up the layers behind these historic buildings and the liminal spaces between. It has been an honor to work in the community, inspired by the disparate Brooklyn abolitionists that created a rising tide, challenging the presence of slavery in America.”

“Congratulations on the launch of this remarkable project,” said New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation Deputy Commissioner for Historic Preservation Daniel Mackay . “More Than a Brook showcases Brooklyn’s abolitionist history through an immersive exploration of local historic landmarks. Bringing this history to life takes creativity, collaboration, and resources — the very ingredients that New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission used to make this audio tour possible. This project is a great example of how certified local government grants through the New York State Historic Preservation Office bring federal funds back into communities each year to support preservation programs and explore history in dynamic and engaging ways.”

“For nearly 200 years, New York University has been inextricably tied to New York and its history, said New York University Vice President of Government Relations and Community Engagement Kyle Kimball . “We are proud that Wunsch Hall, formerly the Bridge Street Methodist Church, the first independent Black church in Brooklyn and a stop on the Underground Railroad, is a part of the exciting, new abolitionist heritage walk that the Landmarks Preservation Commission is launching. We congratulate them on this important effort to remind New Yorkers of the vital role our city has played in our nation's history.”

Regulators Take on the Giants of A.I.

The Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department are set to proceed with investigations into the dominance of Nvidia, Microsoft and OpenAI.

By Andrew Ross Sorkin ,  Ravi Mattu ,  Bernhard Warner ,  Sarah Kessler ,  Michael J. de la Merced ,  Lauren Hirsch and Ephrat Livni

Jonathan Kanter, the Justice Department’s antitrust chief, and Lina Khan, the chair of the Federal Trade Commission, in dark suits, standing with their right hands raised.

An A.I. antitrust fight is coming

Nvidia has joined the $3 trillion valuation club as a blistering A.I. rally has turned it into the world’s second-most valuable company behind Microsoft.

Both companies are at the center of the artificial intelligence boom that has lifted the wider S&P 500 — and both have attracted regulatory scrutiny of the sector’s biggest players.

The F.T.C. and Justice Department are set to proceed with antitrust investigations against the duo, and OpenAI, writes The Times’s David McCabe. The F.T.C. is already looking into Microsoft, according to The Wall Street Journal, over how the company structured a deal with the start-up Inflection AI to avoid scrutiny.

In March, Microsoft hired almost all of the start-up’s staff and agreed to pay around $650 million to license its technology.

The deal added to Microsoft’s leading A.I. position. The company has stakes in OpenAI, the French start-up Mistral and Abu Dhabi’s G42 , and it has also partnered with those businesses to develop and deploy A.I.

(The New York Times has sued OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. systems.)

The regulators are splitting their approach. The Justice Department will look at whether Nvidia has violated antitrust laws and the F.T.C. will focus on OpenAI and Microsoft.

Jonathan Kanter , the Justice Department’s antitrust chief, told The Financial Times that he was looking into “monopoly choke points” and competition. Kanter also promised that regulators would look at “acqui-hires.” He didn’t name Microsoft’s deal with Inflection, but Brad Smith, the tech giant’s president, defended the transaction. “We didn’t want to own the company,” he told The FT. “We wanted to hire some of the people who worked at the company.”

The Biden administration has pushed to rein in Big Tech. U.S. regulatory action trails the likes of the European Union, which passed one of the world’s first comprehensive A.I. rules last year.

But the F.T.C. and Justice Department are intensifying their inquiries: The agency is already investigating OpenAI’s data collection practices and reviewing the company’s partnerships with A.I. start-ups.

Geopolitics could add complications. The Biden administration engineered Microsoft’s deal with G42 to box out China. As Washington battles with Beijing over controlling A.I., it will try to keep the Big Tech on its side even as it tightens the screws.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING

Boeing’s Starliner finally blasts off. The company’s spacecraft is expected to take two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station on Thursday after a series of costly delays. NASA hailed the launch as a milestone in the agency’s effort to rely on the private sector for human spaceflight; it’s also a rare bit of good news for Boeing amid scrutiny of its airplanes.

Elon Musk’s xAI plans to build a supercomputer facility in Memphis. The artificial intelligence start-up will construct a building that local officials described as the “largest multibillion-dollar investment” in the city’s history. It’s part of xAI’s efforts to catch up with more established rivals in amassing the computing power needed for A.I. innovations, as well as cities’ efforts to lure tech industry dollars.

EBay will stop accepting American Express cards over a fee dispute. The online retailer said it was taking the step , which will become effective Aug. 17, because of the “unacceptably high fees” the financial giant charges for card transactions. Despite the high-profile battle over interchange fees, analysts said that American Express was unlikely to reduce them.

The unexpected opposition to halting congestion pricing

The surprise decision by Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York to slam the brakes on a congestion plan for Manhattan, the first of its kind in the U.S., has set off more debate over one of the most contentious urban policies in recent memory.

But it has also split New York’s business community along unexpected lines, as industries argued for and against the move.

Hochul’s announcement was an 11th-hour U-turn, after speaking publicly in favor of the policy as recently as two weeks ago . It would have charged some drivers $15 a day (so long as they use the E-Z Pass tolling system) for entering Manhattan south of 60th Street.

The policy had potentially big economic consequences:

Proponents argued that it would reduce gridlock and pollution in Manhattan, while raising an estimated $1 billion a year for the city’s buses and subways.

Opponents said it would place an undue burden on lower-income city residents, commuters, commercial truckers and local businesses. This camp also included New Jersey Democrats — Gov. Phil Murphy sued to block its implementation — and lawmakers in suburban areas.

For context: Other cities, including London, have already put in place similar measures , with varying degrees of success.

Various business interests had opposed the plan. Hochul had cited a potential chilling effect on commuters coming into the office , with vacancy rates hovering around 20 percent at times. And in March, the chair of the Broadway Association — whose members include Midtown theaters and hotels — fretted that the plan might sharply reduce tourism .

Meanwhile, The Lever reports that Hochul had received thousands of dollars in donations from lobbyists for auto dealers , who have been worried about a potential drop in car sales.

An equally broad group criticized Hochul’s reversal. Among them was the Partnership for New York City , one of the city’s most influential corporate associations: “The toll revenues would amount to only $1 billion a year, which is far less than the $20+ billion cost of lost productivity, overtime and fuel expenses, environmental and health costs that are the result of excess traffic congestion,” said Kathryn Wylde, its president.

The Real Estate Board of New York, a trade group for commercial real estate firms, said that any delay be only temporary . And the president of the New York Building Congress, which represents the construction industry, said, “We are living in a bad episode of ‘The Twilight Zone.’”

At the same time, congestion pricing had already drawn support from Uber — despite the ride-hailing service’s customers being required to pay an extra fee under versions of the initiative.

The S.E.C. hits a roadblock

The S.E.C.’s efforts to clamp down on the booming $27 trillion private funds industry and its oversight of Wall Street are looking shakier this morning.

The agency suffered a significant blow after a federal appellate court on Wednesday struck down disclosure rules that fund giants, including groups connected to Apollo Global Management and Blackstone, have been fighting for months.

The setback puts the S.E.C. in a tough position. It is considering an appeal, setting up a potential Supreme Court showdown. But a loss there could further diminish the agency’s authority as legal challenges mount from pro-business groups accusing the S.E.C. of regulatory overreach.

A recap: Last year, the agency passed mandates that hedge funds, private equity funds and venture capital firms must provide investors more information about fees and expenses. At the time, Gary Gensler , the S.E.C. chair, said the new rules would offer greater protection to “all investors — big or small, institutional or retail, sophisticated or not.”

State pension funds were big supporters of the proposed rules . But Wall Street pushed back hard, calling the rules onerous. The S.E.C. itself estimated that the rules would introduce $5.4 billion worth of compliance costs.

The decision could hamper the S.E.C. The agency is considering other rules related to how private funds work with investors, Jason Brown, an asset management partner at the law firm Ropes & Gray, told DealBook. “I think this case may embolden the industry to challenge those rules in court if they don’t come out the right way,” he said.

What’s next? One possibility is appealing to the Supreme Court. Its conservative majority has recently appeared more open to arguments seeking to curtail the power of regulatory agencies .

That said, regulators scored a big win last month when the court rejected a challenge to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s funding .

The PGA Tour and the Saudis, one year later

Thursday is the first anniversary of the deal that shook the professional golf world: that the PGA Tour and the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, which backs the upstart LIV Golf, would seek to combine forces.

The tie-up may appear to be moving at a snail’s pace, but talks are continuing, and the two sides are set to meet in New York tomorrow, two people familiar with the plans told DealBook’s Lauren Hirsch. (The two people were granted anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly about the matter.)

Who will be involved? Members of the PGA Tour’s transaction committee, which includes Tiger Woods and Fenway Sports Group’s John Henry. Rory McIlroy , who is also on the committee, will be playing in a tournament and joining remotely, one of the people said.

The fact that it’s an in-person meeting is significant. It shows that there’s some real intention to get a deal done. But sources on both sides caution that a breakthrough is far from imminent.

The two sides recently exchanged term sheets, DealBook has reported . It’s a sign that the deal — which sees the Saudis and a new group of U.S. investors each kicking in $1.5 billion — is on more than life support even if progress seems slow.

A year on, the PGA Tour looks very different. It raised at least $1.5 billion from U.S. investors, including the hedge fund mogul Steven Cohen, and created a separate unit for its commercial operations. It also appointed a new board of directors, including Woods, the Home Depot co-founder Arthur Blank and Fenway’s Sam Kennedy, to oversee the commercial business.

That said, two directors from the original PGA Tour’s board have resigned: Mark Flaherty, a Goldman board member, and Jimmy Dunne, the Piper Sandler vice chairman who helped spearhead the deal.

Are more moves on the way? One big question for Wall Street insiders: whether Ed Herlihy, the Wachtell partner who worked closely with Dunne on the original deal, will step down. (He declined to comment.)

Another question: given that high turnover, who exactly has the final say on getting a deal done?

Their landlord hiked their rent by 25%, so they applied for the NYC housing lottery. On the 25th try, luck was on their side.

  • A millennial couple won the New York City affordable-housing lottery after applying about 25 times.
  • Brynne McManimie, 35, and Peter Romano, 34, now live in a $2,800-a-month apartment in Brooklyn.
  • "It was unusually fast. I don't think that's the case for most people, but we got very lucky," McManimie told BI.

Insider Today

In 2021, Brynne McManimie and Peter Romano lived in a one-bedroom apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn . Due to the pandemic, they had gotten a good deal on their lease and paid $2,600 in rent each month. But that didn't last long.

"After a year, our landlord raised our rent by like 25% and it made us very nervous about staying in that apartment," McManimie, an actor and teacher, told Business Insider. Their new rent was $3,300 a month.

"That's when we were like, 'OK, let's just try the housing lottery,'" McManimie added.

For Romano, a New Yorker, and McManimie, a West Coast transplant who has been living in New York for 13 years, the affordable-housing lottery was one of those things they had always heard about.

"It's one of those things that was always talked about in our circle of friends because, as artists, there's also artist housing in New York and we know many people who have lived in those," McManimie said.

The decision to apply for the affordable-housing lottery was also sparked by their desire not to give up some of the perks they were already used to in Greenpoint — such as having a washer and dryer in their unit.

"A lot of these new buildings with the housing lottery are nice and have a lot of good amenities, but they're a lot more affordable and in our price range," McManimie said. "So that prompted us to go for it."

A pipe dream for most

The affordable-housing lotteries are run by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, or HPD, and the Housing Development Corporation.

Although applying is free, each household must meet specific income requirements to qualify for a lottery apartment. These vary across developments depending on unit size and location.

But winning the housing lottery is a pipe dream for most applicants: In 2018, The New York Times reported that the odds of winning were 1 in 592 .

But luck was on the couple's side.

"This actually happened very fast for us," McManimie, 35, said. "I think we applied to this building in April 2023. We were contacted in May to submit documents but didn't hear from them until September."

By early October, they had already signed the lease and moved in.

"It was unusually fast. I don't think that's the case for most people, but we got very lucky," McManimie said, adding that they had applied to about 25 different buildings.

$2,800 a month

The couple's one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment in Clinton Hill came with a balcony. It's a corner unit, so they have neighbors on only one side.

According to the latest May data from RentHop.com, the median monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Clinton Hill is $3,750.

"It's definitely smaller than our old apartment," McManimie said. "The kitchen and the living room are all one big room, but everything is brand new. We're the first people to live in this unit."

It also had all the amenities they wanted: a dishwasher, a washer-dryer, central AC, and heating.

The couple signed a two-year lease on the apartment and now pay $2,800 monthly rent.

Related stories

"Since it's rent-stabilized , they can't raise it like a ton," Romano, an actor and professor, told BI. "Which is honestly really attractive to us, given what happened with our last landlord."

Every year, the Rent Guidelines Board decides the percentages by which landlords can legally increase rents for rent-stabilized apartments. In 2023, the board voted to raise rents on one-year leases by 3%, and on two-year leases by 2.75% for the first year and 3.2% for the second year, per The New York Times .

The day they moved in, it felt like a weight off their shoulders.

"I felt relieved, honestly," Romano, 34, added. "Our financial situation — with this rent amount — was going to feel very good. And I remember when we sat down on the couch after the day, it was like, 'Okay, I can breathe a little bit.'"

McManimie felt the same.

"I was a little nervous about downsizing even more. But after a couple of days, I didn't really notice," McManimie said. "Our building has a rooftop deck; we have a lounge upstairs to work in with a beautiful view of the city. We have a gym and a giant lobby."

Although the apartment is small — about 550 square feet — it still feels like they have a lot of space, she added.

A work in progress

Design-wise, the couple's apartment is bright and colorful with midcentury influences.

McManimie is behind the decor, while Romano is the one who's responsible for building their furniture.

"Since our space is so small, we looked for furniture with storage. Our coffee table, one of our stools, and our bed has additional storage," McManimie said. "We also store things under our couch and above our cabinets."

Other furniture pieces are from a vacation home they previously owned in Poconos with McManimie's father.

"We sold it before we even applied for this apartment since it made us a little ineligible for a while," Romano said. Those applying for rental units through the housing lottery aren't allowed to own residential property in or within 100 miles of New York City limits.

Although they were sad to see it go, it's been nice not to have to manage a property, McManimie added: "I think people don't always realize how hard it is to be a homeowner."

Even now, they aren't done decorating their apartment .

"Our bedroom is definitely still a work in progress," McManimie said, adding that she's looking for an antique mirror for the space. She also shared that she has an antique desk in storage that she's planning to use as a vanity.

A 'life-changing' opportunity

Their biggest tip for anyone who wants to apply for the housing lottery is to have all the financial paperwork on hand during the application process.

"Your tax returns, your pay stubs — they asked for all of that information in quite a quick amount of time to turn around," Romano said.

There's also no point in applying for apartments that fall outside your income range since "they're going to weed you out immediately," McManimie said.

Applying for the housing lottery requires a lot of paperwork and many people end up unsuccessful in their bids, but it's still worth a shot, she added.

"If you're unhappy with your situation or your rent is too high , you might as well try," McManimie said. "You have to decide what your priorities are."

Ultimately, the apartment situation worked ouy well for them, she added.

"We're really happy and very thankful that New York City has an affordable housing lottery. It's definitely been life-changing," she said.
