Permit to Re-enter India Within 2 Months

Tourist visa restrictions.

This applies only to Citizens of Afghanistan, China, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, foreigners of Pakistan origin, and stateless persons.

For tourist visa holders as listed above, there must be a gap of at least 2 months between two separate visits to India. Tourist visa holders need a permit if they would like to re-enter India within 2 months after last leaving India.

This requirement applies even if the tourist visa is not stamped to indicate anything regarding this.

This requirement applies only to tourist visa holders. It does not apply to other visa holders and neither to OCI card holders.

Permit Not Required

However, no permit is required if you are traveling to multiple countries on the same itinerary and the trip exactly follows the itinerary. You must carry a copy of the itinerary and the proof of ticket bookings to show the Immigration Officer at the port of entry.

In such cases, you may be permitted two or three entries, on a case by case and need basis. You can get such authorization from the officer at the port of entry or you can get it in advance from the Indian Consulate/Embassy. If you are already outside your country of origin, you can get such an endorsement from the nearest Indian Consulate/Embassy. The total period of stay in India, counted from the date of first entry into the country, will not exceed the maximum allowed stay during one visit, such as 180 days or 90 days.

Permit to Re-enter Within Two Months

This permit is granted only if the need is urgent such as death/serious illness in the family, non-availability of connecting flights to return to your country of origin, or travel to another country, or any other exigent situation which can be duly justified with proper documentation to the satisfaction of the Consulate/Embassy granting the permission. It will not be issued for Business Activities/Employment or pursuing studies/research, etc.

If a permit is granted,  registration with the FRRO  is required within 14 days of entry into India, preferably at the first place of visit on re-entry. An endorsement to this effect will be made on the visa sticker.

Any permit or authorization related information may be provided by the issuing Consulate/Embassy to the Ministry of Home Affairs (Foreigners Division) and to the Consulate/Embassy from where the original visa was issued. #1 In addition to the fees listed above, U.S. short term visa holders will be charged a reference fee of $20. U.S. Green Card holders and those who have a U.S. long term visa (3 years or more) will not be charged the reference fee. However, applicants with nationalities including Iran, China, Slovak Republic, and the Czech Republic will be required to pay the reference fee of $20 regardless of Green Card or U.S. long term visa status.

Do children also require the India Tourist eVisa?

Yes, children require an India Tourist eVisa just like adults. The application process is the same for minors, and they must have a visa to enter India regardless of their age.

When applying for a visa for a minor, legal guardians need to provide additional documents:

A copy of the minor’s birth certificate.

Copies of the passports of the child's parents or legal guardians.

A consent letter signed by both parents or legal guardians, which authorizes the child's travel to India.

India Tourist eVisa validity: How long can I stay in India?

Here are the options for the India Tourist eVisa we offer, along with their validity and entry types:

30-day double-entry visa: This eVisa allows two entries into India and is valid for 30 days, so you must use it to enter India within that time. You also have 30 days max stay from the date of your first entry.

1-year multiple-entry visa: This visa is valid for one year from the date of issuance. You can enter India multiple times during the year, and it permits stays of up to 90 days per visit for most nationalities, except for the U.S., UK, and Canada, who can stay for up to 180 days per visit. The maximum stay for all nationalities is 180 days per year.

5-year multiple-entry visa: This eVisa offers the greatest flexibility. Valid for 5 years from the date of issue, it allows multiple entries, with each stay capped at 90 days. Except for those from the U.S., UK, and Canada, who can stay for up to 180 days. The maximum stay within a year for all nationalities is 180 days.

How to read your Tourist Visa validity

Validity period: How long can your visa be used for.

Max stay: The longest you can stay in India each time you visit.

Expiry date: This depends on which visa type you have.

For example:

If you've got a 30-day India Tourist eVisa, and the expiry date is March 14:

The latest date you can enter India is March 14, 2024.

This is the expiry date of your visa. From this date, you're allowed to stay in the country for up to 30 days.

If you've got a 1-year or 5-year India Tourist eVisa, and the expiry date is March 14:

The latest date you can leave India is March 14, 2024.

The expiry date, in this case is the date by which you must depart India.

You can stay in India for as long as your maximum stay but not longer than the validity period.

Can I extend my India Tourist eVisa?

Generally, the India Tourist eVisa cannot be extended. Tourists are expected to adhere to the validity period specified on their eVisa—either 30 days, 90 days per visit on the 1-year visa, or 90 days per visit on the 5-year visa.

If you need to stay longer than the terms of your original visa due to exceptional circumstances, you must apply through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) in India. For detailed procedures and exceptions, it’s advisable to consult the official Indian government immigration website .

To apply for the India Tourist eVisa online, you generally need:

Passport : A scan of the information page of your valid passport, which must have at least six months of validity from the date of arrival in India and at least two blank pages.

Today they have been returned and mine is a 12 month multiple entry visa and my wife’s is a double entry for 6 months.

Anyone any ideas why this would be ?

We are flying to Kolkata and will be going into Bhutan for a few days before returning to Kolkata so assume the double entry will cover this.

It now looks like she will have for a further visa next year to enable us to go on our next India trip.
