Indonesian tourism chief to revive country’s tourism industry in 2021.

KOMPAS.com – Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno aims to revive Indonesia’s tourism industry, which has taken a hit from the Covid-19 pandemic throughout 2020.

The former Jakarta Deputy Governor announced that “Covid-19’s effects on the Indonesian tourist industry forced the Tourism and Creative Economy to target four to seven million foreign tourists in 2021,” he said in a press release on Thursday, December 31 2020.

Sandiaga maintained that the ministry will still aim high by focusing on five ‘Super Priority Destinations’, namely Lake Toba, Borobudur, Mandalika, Labuan Bajo, and Likupang.

“We will bolster these and other tourist destinations by emphasizing on the 3 A’s of Attraction, Amenity and Accessibility, as well as push for digital technology, investment and promotion of the tourism sector.”

Sandiaga pointed out that the industry will diversify to the outdoors, sports, health, wellness, ecotourism as well as medical tourism.

“[The tourist industry] will apply health protocols based on CHSE or cleanliness, health, safety and environment in tourist destinations and creative economy. They will be key in regaining tourists’ trust in the tourism industry during the pandemic and onwards,” Sandiaga said.

“We can promote CHSE further by holding mega events, mega family trips, MICE [Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition] roadshows overseas. We will also endorse the use of E-HAC or Health Alert Cards to the wider public and other institutions.”

He noted that the latter can be coordinated with the Ministry of Health and telecommunications providers to monitor the coming and going of visitors with potential health issues.

Sandiaga also pledged to work closely with universities, provincial administrations as well as the public and business sectors to bolster tourism and creative economy in Indonesia.

Sandiaga’s deputy Angela Tanoesoedibjo asserted that the Ministry will opt for a cutting edge approach in pitching Indonesian tourism.

“Our strategy is based on innovation, adaptation and collaboration. We will use big data to design a more personalized means of promotion, and ensure that movers in the tourist industry and creative economy can survive,” she said.

The Covid-19 pandemic hit Indonesian tourism hard in 2020, as it resulted in a 70.57 percent drop in visitor numbers the year before.

3.56 million tourists came to Indonesia between January to September 2020, compared to the 12.1 million visitors who came during the same period in 2019.

The coronavirus also kept the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy from meeting its target of receiving 18 million visitors in 2020.

Indonesia names new tourism leaders, identifies domestic targets

indonesian ministry of tourism

Indonesia Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (MoTCE) will focus on growing the domestic travel next year with a target of 1.4 billion movements while boosting the quality and sustainability for the international market.

This statement was made by minister of tourism and creative economy Sandiaga Uno during the inauguration of new MoTCE deputies in his office on October 3.

Ni Made Ayu Marthini is deputy for tourism, taking over from Nia Niscaya, who is now the deputy for strategic policies. Marthini was formerly director of the manufacture product export development for Ministry of Trade.

The new deputy for resources and institutional affairs is Diah Martini Mohammad Paham, who has built her career at MoTCE in the communications and marketing departments. She was previously director of inter-agency relations.

Sandiaga said: “Our (domestic travel) target of 500 million movements this year has been passed. By August, domestic travel movements have reached more than 600 million. Next year, domestic travel will be the focus.

“International arrivals have started to recover in number, but we want to improve its quality and sustainability.”

Aside from accelerating campaigns like #inDOnesiaCARE and #DiIndonesiaAja, Sandiaga shared that president Joko Widodo has given instructions to travel ‘di Indonesia saja’ (just in Indonesia) to optimise the potential of Indonesia’s varied nature and culture, adding that this would resonate with #BanggaBuatanIndonesia (proud of the Indonesian products).

He said that not only should they be proud of buying Indonesian products but also travelling within Indonesia, making sure that the domestic market becomes mainstream and an on-going trend.

Sandiaga’s instruction to Diah was to expand and improve the quality of manpower in the tourism and creative economic sectors though upskilling, reskilling and new skilling pro-grammes to be ready for the 5.0 era.

“The target is to create 1.1 million new job openings in 2022 and 4.4. million by 2024,” he said, and also emphasised the importance of materialising regional and international MoUs and other collaborations.

Govt earmarks additional Rp 15 trillion for five priority-tourism destination developments

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno said that with additional budget, the government aimed to complete development in tourism-destinations Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Borobudur in Central Java, Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara and Likupang in North Sulawesi.

“With this additional fund, we expect that the development [at the five destinations] will be completed in the next two years,” Sandiaga said at a national coordination meeting in Toba, North Sumatra, on Wednesday.

The meeting was also attended by Coordinating Maritime and Investment Affairs Minister Luhut Panjaitan, Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Abdullah Azwar Anas and National Development Planning Minister Suharso Monoarfa.

The tourism development is part of the minister’s pledge to focus on reviving the pandemic-stricken tourism industry. Sandiaga has been developing the nation’s five “super-priority” tourist destinations – sometimes called the “five new Balis” – at the behest of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

The Tourism Ministry has targeted 1.2-1.4 million domestic tourist visits in 2023 by planning more tourism events.

“The tourism creative economy will create 4.4 million jobs,” he said.

Minister Luhut predicted that tourism activities will increase as the Indonesian economy is expected to grow by more than 5 percent next year.

“Tourism-performance increase is supported by domestic tourism with growing accommodations and food-beverage [businesses],” Luhut said.

Meanwhile, Minister Abdullah said that the government will push alternative efforts to push tourism, including optimizing national holidays that fall on weekends.

“[We] can suggest additional collective leaves before or after the national holidays or during hari kejepit ,” he said, referring to days that fall between a weekend and a public holiday. (dre)

Minister Sandiaga Encourages Foreign Tourists to Visit Indonesia Without Hesitation

indonesian ministry of tourism

Jakarta, December 9th 2022 - Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy/Head of Tourism and Creative Economy Agency, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, asks foreign tourists not to hesitate to visit Indonesia. As a country which has numerous choices of tourist destinations, one of which is Bali, Indonesia is always open to welcoming tourist.

“Nothing has changed from the current system in the tourism industry. Our focus is to continue to improve quality and sustainability tourism,” according to Minister Sandiaga Uno, in a statement, Friday (9/12/2022).

He emphasized that the Indonesian government adhered to the guidelines that the private space of the public, including tourists, would be guaranteed so that the comfort and security of the private space of tourists while traveling in Indonesia would always be maintained.

The ratification of the Draft Criminal Code Bill (RKUHP) by the House of Representatives (DPR) some time ago was a manifestation of the functioning of a constitutional state system which main objective is to protect the Indonesian people. This regulation will take effect 3 years after being ratified, Minister Sandiaga said.

In fact, there are no substantive changes regarding this article compared to Article 284 of the old Criminal Code (KUHP). The difference lies only in the addition of parties entitled to complaint. The threat of new penalties can apply if there are parties who complain or in other words complaint offenses.

This rule stipulates that the parties who can complain is the husband or wife for people who are bound by marriage. Whereas for people who are not bound by marriage are the parents or children. Without complaints by legal person, no parties have the right to take legal actions.

Currently, the government together with relevant stakeholders are preparing detailed regulations and SOPs for tourism activities that can ensure the safety and comfort of visiting tourists.

In addition, dissemination continues to be carried out not only to the tourism industry but also to domestic and foreign tourists to avoid misinterpretations or misunderstandings about the Criminal Code.

“The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (MOTCE) ensures all tourists who want to visit, not to hesitate to have a vacation and carry out tourism activities in Indonesia, that the constitution in force in Indonesia will still guarantee the private space of the community and all visiting tourists. Articles related to adultery and cohabitation (regarding living in the same house without marriage ties) are also offenses against complaints, so in practice they do not directly affect all visiting tourists,” Sandiaga explained.

Strengthen Dissemination

Minister Sandiaga said that his institution continues to strengthen coordination with related stakeholders to continue disseminating the law, which will become effective in the next three years, which is 2025. Especially for foreign tourist market countries, to make them visit Indonesia without any hesitation.

“The hospitality industry has been briefed and we will resolve any potential misunderstandings. The hotel is certain to always guarantee the confidentiality of the data of tourists staying overnight,” he added.

“Tourists are expected not to hesitate to keep visiting to enjoy the natural beauty, cultural diversity, and the friendliness of the people. The tourism industry really respects personal things carried out responsibly,” he continued.

The Malaysian hospitality industry took a significant step towards sustainable tourism with the launch of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) certification for hotels and resorts. This pioneering initiative is a collaborative effort between SGS, the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) and SAIMATRIX INTERGRATED.

On June 14, 2024, all parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and officially launched the ESG certification. Surya Kumar, Undersecretary of the Tourism Licensing and Enforcement Division from The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) attended the event as the guest of honor.

Officially Supported by MOTAC

Officially supported by MOTAC, ESG Certification for Malaysian Hotels & Resorts aims to provide clear guidelines and a comprehensive, holistic and measurable checklist for hotels and resorts in Malaysia. The certification will serve as the industry's benchmark, following the nation's 2030 vision for sustainable tourism. By adopting these standards, hotels and resorts can ensure they operate in an environmentally responsible, socially equitable and well-governed manner.

Pathways to ESG certification

There are a few steps to achieve and maintain ESG certification specifically designed for the Malaysian hospitality industry:

  • Engagement and commitment Hotels and resorts begin their journey towards ESG certification by participating in Basic ESG Training from SAIMATRIX INTERGRATED. This initial step introduces the requirements of certification and provides essential knowledge of ESG principles. By engaging in this training, establishments can better understand the expectations involved in pursuing the certification, allowing them to assess their level of commitment and readiness for the process.
  • Pre-assessment and gap analysis Following training, hotels and resorts undergo a pre-assessment and gap analysis conducted by SGS. This comprehensive process evaluates the establishment's current practices and performance against the established ESG framework, identifying areas needed for improvement.
  • Implementation Based on the findings of the gap analysis, SAIMATRIX INTERGRATED facilitates hotels and resorts to develop and implement action plans to address identified gaps and enhance their performance in key ESG areas. These action plans are tailored to the specific needs and priorities of each establishment, ensuring targeted and effective improvements.
  • Reporting Once the necessary improvements have been made, hotels and resorts undergo a rigorous certification audit conducted by SGS. This audit evaluates the establishment's adherence to the ESG framework and assesses its eligibility for certification.
  • ESG certification award Upon successful completion of the audit process and verification of compliance with ESG standards, hotels and resorts are awarded ESG certification. This prestigious certification serves as a testament to their dedication to sustainable practices and responsible tourism.
  • Certification renewals To maintain certification status, hotels and resorts undergo yearly renewals. This ensures that certified establishments continue to uphold ESG standards and remain committed to sustainability in the long term.

Our expertise in ESG

As the appointed certification body, SGS provides comprehensive services including GAP analysis, auditing and certification. Our rigorous standards and thorough evaluation processes ensure that hotels and resorts meet the highest levels of environmental, social and governance criteria. Our expertise in conducting detailed assessments and providing actionable feedback is critical in helping establishments achieve and maintain ESG compliance.
