by Alexandra | Sep 20, 2022 | Destinations , Europe

A nice evening with friends includes a cold beer. Since we may not be able to sit on the Riviera, we still have the option to indulge in beer. This is the perfect solution for us as it’s the world-famous beer for a reason. We have put together the four best brewery and beer tours in Germany for you, one tour for each direction. Now you can explore Germany in a different way. Cheers to that!

Brewery Tour in the North

Two Pilsner beers on a table in Germany

Starting in the small village of  Bagband, which lies in the heart of East Frisia.  The Ostfriesen Bräu brewery is known for a dark country beer with an award as the ‘European Beer Star.’ Not once but twice, making it one of Germany’s top breweries and beer tours! Here you can experience a lot, from beer tastings to beer seminars and even a museum where you can learn everything about the process and production. There are delicious German home cooking options in a rustic brewery atmosphere at the restaurant. Here you can satisfy your hunger.

In the town of  Jever,  you will find yourself a brewery, funnily enough, called ‘The Jever.’ The Jever beer is one of the most famous beers from the North. You can see it in the size of the brewery! Here you can find out everything there is to know about Jever beer on a brewery tour. The pilsner is the most popular beer here. However, there are also many special flavors, such as blood orange and lemon.

Hamburg is famous for bad weather and Holsten beer. So, the Holsten Brewery is a must-visit if you do a brewery tour in the North. The first Holsten was brewed here in Hamburg as early as 1879. This is one of the beer tours in Germany with an extensive history. Every year there is the brewery festival held here during the summer. You can play games, taste delicious food, listen to music, and drink a lot of beer.

We continue to  Flensburg . This brewery, you guessed it, produces Flensburg beer. There are 16 different types of beer (if you count the non-alcoholic ones) that you can try. During the “Brewmaster Evenings,” you will learn about the brewing process in a small group of a maximum of 6 people. You will be able to help and, of course, get the chance to try a variety of beers. You can also buy quirky things related to Flens beer in the shop next door.

But what makes brewery and beer tours in Germany really special is the people you experience them with. A group of like-minded people should enjoy a delicious beer together. Nobody in your circle of friends has the desire or time. Then stop by JoinMyTrip and find travel partners  who love beer as much as you do.

Brewery Tour in the East

A sign on the top of a roof saying BEER!

If a beer tour in eastern Germany is an option for you, you must head to  Dresden . Dresden is only 20 minutes from the suburb, Radeberg, where the Radeberger beer is brewed. This brewery, however, only brews Pilsner beer. But it has such a good reputation that even a bar in New York only sells Radeberger!

You can take a tapping course in the brewery to learn how to tap a Radeberger perfectly. Afterward, there is time for tasting and yummy snacks . The great thing is that there is a bus tour from Dresden. The bus tour takes you from the city center directly to the brewery. This means you can happily enjoy one of Germany’s best beer breweries and tours whilst drinking away without worrying about transportation.

We continue to Saxony Anhalt, more precisely to  Wernigerode,  as this is the home of the Hasseröder brewery. Hasseröder beer is the best-selling beer in Saxony Anhalt. Therefore it must definitely be on the list of German breweries you should visit. The brewery has been around since 1872. You can find out everything about the pearly Pils on a brewery tour. Be sure to try black beer, which has a very unique taste. The Premium Pils from Hasseröder has received the gold medal award of the DLG (German Agricultural Society) 14 times. And the silver medal nine times! Isn’t this a reason in itself why you should pay a visit to one of the top German breweries?

Our brewery tour ends in the East, in  Leipzig.  Here you will find the Sternburg brewery. This smaller but fine brewery produces one of the five most popular beers in the east, Sternburg. The tour is small and friendly, often carried out by the manager himself. He knows how to entertain his guests. You will never have a boring moment here. The special thing about this brewery is perhaps not necessarily the type of beer brewed here. Rather that it works with the Diakonie am Thornberg. The majority of the employees are impaired for various reasons. But they can still do a normal job in the Sternburg Brewery. This brewery gives a familiar impression, and you will really feel at home. The perfect end to your German brewery and beer tour in eastern Germany.

Pint of a beer standing on a bar side the best beer tour in germany

The Southern beer tour starts in Upper Bavaria, in the small community of  Andechs. The Benedictine monastery situates in this place, where the Andechs monastery beer is brewed. Centuries-old monastery brewery traditions and the latest brewing technology meet here, and the results are truly impressive. The brewery is not just a special place; the monastery itself is spectacular, which you can explore on a guided tour. Have you always wanted to understand how real monks live? Then this is a great opportunity to see this experience, making this German brewery and beer tour unique.

We continue to  Freising,  located here on the Nährberg mountain and is the Weihenstephan brewery. This brewery is especially great if you want to be outside as there is a great beer garden surrounding it, where you can try the freshly brewed beer. This brewery is special as it is the oldest brewery in the world and, therefore, a must-see for every real beer lover. There are 15 different varieties you can try out, and the atmosphere is just another reason this is one of the best breweries and beer tours in Germany. The whole thing is as Bavarian as it gets, including the waiters and waitresses dressed in traditional costumes.

We believe this day could be your favorite, delicious beer and food in a great beer garden outside on the top of a mountain. Everything your heart desires. Be sure to try the yeast wheat beer!

The last stop in the south is the Paulaner brewery in  Munich . Monks founded the brewery in 1634, making it one of the oldest breweries in the world. With a workforce of 2,496, it is also one of the largest in Germany. Paulaner is popular worldwide, and the brewery invites you to brewery tours every day, visited by many tourists. Here you learn everything about the exact brewing process, and you can also try it from time to time.

The tour begins with a glass of home-brewed schnapps in the brewhouse so you can really get in the mood. Next up, there is a film lecture in which the beer production is well explained, followed by a tour of the individual stages the beer goes through. The South of Germany is renowned worldwide for its beer, and the Paulaner is definitely one of them.

Brewery Tour in the West

If you are a real beer lover, you should definitely head over to  Dortmund, as there is not only one brewery you can visit but also eight. Among other things, the Dortmunder Kronen Bier, Brinkhoffs, and Ritter beers are being brewed here. Since the late Middle Ages, the city was given the right to brew, and they haven’t stopped. Over 7.5 million hectoliters are produced here annually, and only one other city in the USA exceeds this. You can take part in one of the tours of all breweries, but if you can’t decide, visit the Brewery Museum. Because everything you need to know about how to brew a beer is there for you to learn. Don’t worry. There is even a beer tasting in the museum, which you can book.

And off you go to the next destination , the Bönnsch brewery in  Bonn . Here you will get a cold glass of Bönnsch and a delicious sandwich with a homemade spread. Then the tour begins, where you can try the beer and taste it in the various stages of production at each station. Each time try to taste the individual ingredients and figure out if it is hops, malt, or barley. After the tour, you can end the day by eating something delicious in the restaurant. This brewery is located in the heart of Bonn and has a great family atmosphere, making it a worthwhile visit.

Now we have come to the end of our brewery tour in the west, where we finish it in Cologne with the Früh brewery, where the Früh Kölsch is brewed. Cologne is a really cool city where you can experience a lot. The special thing about this brewery is not necessarily the tour, but the beer garden, which is located in the middle of the city center. It is located right next to the cathedral and offers a great view of all the hustle and bustle going on in the city. Unlike many other breweries, which are often only visited by tourists, this brewery is very popular with the Cologne residents, whether young or old, businessman or craftsman, family, and friends meet here to enjoy a delicious Kölsch.

Visiting Jever, Germany and Drinking Jever Beer

Zimmin Around the World

Zimmin Around the World

Jever is the capital of Friesland in Lower Saxony and is not well known outside of Germany . In fact, most Germans only know Jever because of the Jever Pilsener that is produced here and sold throughout the country. Don’t worry, if visiting Jever, there is much more to do and see here then just drink beer. Jever has a lot of great restaurant options, a castle , unique church , and cute downtown area. But, if you are visiting Jever, might as well enjoy a Jever Pilsener.

Table of Contents

Jever, Germany on a Map

Jever is a town in Friesland, Lower Saxony, Germany . Some more recognizable big cities that are within driving distance from Jever include Bremerhaven , Bremen , and Hamburg . Only about 20km from the beaches of the North Sea, Jever can be a great home base to explore more of Friesland and the North Sea area.

Things to do Around Jever

There is more to do in Jever then just drink Jever Beer. In fact, there is plenty to do and see in Jever to fill a days worth of exploring. Visitors can try local and regional food , visit the castle , and do some shopping in the old town district. Jever is a very walkable city and very easy to get around .

We spent a half day in Jever and definitely did not cover the entire city, but we have plans for visiting Jever again in the future. Whether you have a half day to explore Jever or a full day, here are some of the things we did and our recommendations.

Eat at a Local Café or Restaurant

Jever Germany

Like many small cities or towns in Germany, there are plenty of comfortable and delicious local cafes and restaurants in Jever.

Jever has a few great restaurant options, including your traditional German restaurants but there are also other cuisine types in Jever to include Bar and Grill’s, Italian, Seafood, there are even bakeries and ice cream shops

Originally, we intended to eat a nice German meal at the brewery, but the restaurant attached to the brewery didn’t open until later in the evening. Jill and I found a cute café near the brewery for lunch called Café & Bistro de Mood . We got a few Beers and split a flammkuchen. Flammkuchen is similar to a pizza, the dough is very thin covered with fromage blanc topped with onions and thinly sliced bacon.

See the Stadtkirche (Town Church)

Visiting Jever

The stadtkirche or town church in English, is a unique church found in the heart of Jever.

What makes this church so unique is that it is a mix of old and new . The original church burnt down and was rebuilt in the 1700’s. Then, in 1964 a new addition to the church was built and connected to the old apse .

If visiting Jever, make sure to go inside the church and witness the differences between old and new.

Visit the Castle Museum

Visiting Jever

Besides Jever Beer, visiting the castle and museum was a highlight of our trip to Jever.

Jever Castle isn’t your typical fairy-tale castle or medieval fortress. Despite not being as famous as other castles around Germany, it still has an interesting history and is well worth a visit.

Jever Castle started off as a fortress in the 14th century . In 1818 , Jever belonged to the Duchy of Oldenburg and became a residence for the Dukes.

Since 1921 , the castle has had its own museum . The museum has a lot of artifacts from Jever from archaeology to art.

After visiting the castle museum, there is a beautiful garden surrounding the castle where visitors can leisurely stroll and look at the moat, peacocks, and get great views of the castle.

Walk Around the Altstadt

jever brewery tour

Every great German city or town has a nice altstadt or old town . The altstadt is usually the center of town where all the shops, restaurants, and unique attractions can be found.

Jever has a small and very walkable old town area not far from either the castle or Jever Brewery.

The altstadt here is lined with cute shops and delicious looking restaurants.

Jever Beer (Jever Bier)

Visiting Jever

Jever’s claim to fame and in reality what puts this city on a map is their brewery and the beer they produce.

I’ve had a Jever Pilsener in Germany many times without knowing anything about the town or location it comes from.

According to the  Jever Brewery website, Jever beer has been around since 1848. More can be read on their website about the history, but it’s developed over 160 years to what it is today.

Jever really only has two beers that are brewed, the Jever Pilsener and Jever Fun which is a non-alcoholic beer.

jever brewery tour

So is Jever Pilsener a good beer ?

I think so, I’ve had many pilsener style beers throughout Germany and think Jever Pilsener is a solid pilsener. Would I say it’s my all time favorite? Probably not, then again, I am not a huge pilsener guy. I do think it’s a refreshing beer and has a nice crisp taste.

jever brewery tour

So Why Not Visit Jever and Drink Jever Pilsener?

Jever is not a touristy city but its brewery has had quite the impact on the beer industry in Germany. In Germany, everyone knows Jever not because of the town but because of the beer. Jever Pilsener is a high quality beer that has a crisp and refreshing taste and can be found throughout Germany. If beer is not high on your to do list, then Jever also has a beautiful castle, unique church, and old town district with plenty of shops and restaurants.

Tour of the brewery

We had a business meeting just before Christmas 2016 in Jever and the organizers arranged for a tour of the local brewery. Very interesting to see absolute high tech located in the middle of a quaint old town that is clearly dominated by the Jever brewery. It is hard to impossible to go into any restaurant in the local area and get another beer but Jever. lol So the tour was a nice add on to show wehere the beer was brewed and how it is made. State of the art brewery but also dip into history of the old days during the tour when the historic parts of the brewery are shown to the visitors. It’s worth the while to take the tour on one of those days where the weather does not cooperate. #Recommend.

Beer Walking Tour: LoDo to LoHi

Here's a walking tour that takes you from LoDo (Lower Downtown) to LoHi (Lower Highland), visiting several beer hotspots along the way.

Wynkoop Brewing Company

Colorado's first brewpub opened in 1988 and was founded by a group of young urban pioneers that included John Hickenlooper, who went on to serve as Mayor of Denver for seven years and as the Governor of Colorado for two terms (the first former brewer to be elected as a state governor since Sam Adams in 1794). Today, the  Wynkoop Brewing Company  is the center of LoDo — Denver's hip historic district where century-old warehouses have been turned into more than 90 bars, brewpubs, restaurants and cafes.

Guided Private Tours

Denver microbrew tour.

Find out why Denver has been dubbed the "Napa Valley of Beer." The  Denver Microbrew Tour  is a 1.5-mile guided walking tour in downtown Denver's historic  LoDo  (lower downtown) neighborhood. The tour includes 10 samples at four of downtown's best breweries and tap rooms, including  Wynkoop Brewing Company   and  Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery . The guides are bona fide Denver brew aficionados, so you'll come out of this tour knowing more about beer than you ever thought possible. If street art is more your scene, join their RiNo Beer and Graffiti Tour, which winds past colorful murals in the River North Art District (RiNo)  on its path to four breweries (and possibly a cidery!).

Aspire Tours' Brews n' Views Tour

Get out into the mountains and sample the best of the Colorado brewing scene with Aspire Tours . On this small-group tour, you'll learn the history of brewing in the area and enjoy stunning views while you visit three breweries in mountain towns (including historic  Golden ) on this half-day tour.

Take a private tour of Denver's best breweries with up to 14 of your closest friends with Denver Brew Tours . What makes this tour different? YOU pick the breweries! Choose from any of the more than 100 local breweries in and around Denver and Boulder, or pick from Denver Brew Tours' list of nearly 50 partner breweries, grouped by region so your can maximize your time. With Denver Brew Tours, you're in control of everything except the driving. Prefer to keep your feet on the ground? The company also offers a walking tour of Denver’s Tennyson Street Cultural District, including tasting flights at three local breweries.

Mile High Bike Tours' Bike & Brew Tour

See some of the city’s best attractions by bicycle, including diverse public art, government buildings, beautiful parks, distinct architecture and all three professional sports arenas. Then, head to RiNo to sample some of Denver’s finest craft beer at a local hotspot on this approximately nine-mile, three-hour, fun-filled excursion.

Wynkoop's architecture is typical of the neighborhood, with hardwood floors, exposed brick walls covered with artwork and big open windows. The second floor of the huge pub has 22 pool tables, multiple dart boards and other bar games. There are always more than a dozen craft beers on tap. The flagship beer (available in cans) is Rail Yard Amber Ale, a smooth amber with the malty flavor of an Oktoberfest lager. For a true Colorado experience, try Patty's Chile Beer, a German-style lager made with chiles and smoked Ancho peppers.

Direction to next stop:  Walk west on Wynkoop two blocks to the 16th Street Mall, then turn left and walk seven blocks to Curtis.

Rock Bottom Brewery

Today,  Rock Bottom Brewery  is a major chain with more than 30 breweries that produce 700 different craft beers that have won over 125 medals. But their brewery in Denver is the "mother ship," the first brewery of the chain when it opened in 1990. Rock Bottom has one of the best locations on the 16th Street Mall, Denver's mile-long pedestrian promenade. There are 41 outdoor patios along the Mall, but the one at Rock Bottom is the largest and one of the most popular. On summer weekends, bands play and hundreds of people gather to sip craft beer on the patio under twinkling lights, as horse-drawn carriages clatter by. The interior of the massive bar is built around towering glass windows displaying the brewing equipment. It can be noisy, crowded and fun, as the bar brings in an attractive crowd of young downtown office workers. For a quieter experience, head to the back bar, which has pool tables and a staff that's both knowledgeable and passionate about craft beer. Rock Bottom features the standard IPAs, Red Ale, White Ale, Dark Ale and a Winter Tartan Ale, as well as the always popular Molly's Titanic Brown Ale. The brewmaster at each pub creates specials, so check what's on the current beer list, and especially look for the hand-pulled cask-conditioned ales in the back room.

Direction to next stop:  Catch the free MallRide bus at the corner of 16th and Curtis and take it north to the final stop at the Union Station Light Rail. Walk back to 16th Street and over the Millennium Bridge (easily identifiable by the tall white mast). Continue straight through the Riverfront development and across Commons Park to a second pedestrian bridge over the South Platte River. On the other side of the bridge, walk one block to Platte Street and turn right. Denver Beer Company is on the far side of the street.

denver-beer-company-patio-hops

Take a seat outside and enjoy the sunshine at Denver Beer Co.

Denver Beer Company

Denver Beer Company  is one of the city's favorite tap rooms — a place that really captures the laid-back feeling of The Mile High City. Located in a former auto garage, on warm days the "walls" of the pub literally roll up, making the whole building open air. There's an outdoor patio with picnic tables next to a space where different food trucks park every day.

Denver Beer serves only delicious homemade pretzels and beer, but you're welcome to bring your own food or purchase food at the rotating food trucks. Dogs are welcome too, and it's a rare day when there aren't at least a few pups at the bar or on the patio. Owners Charlie and Patrick began as home brewers and are dedicated to making the finest and most inventive beers in the city. There are usually a dozen small-batch beers on tap that rotate regularly. Check the chalkboard to see what's available. If Graham Cracker Porter is on tap, make that your choice. It's been described as "a campfire in a glass with notes of vanilla, smoked cedar and mulling spices." This is a neighborhood bar where people stop in after a bike ride or a run. Even Denver Mayor Michael Hancock is a fan — he helped Patrick and Charlie make a pumpkin ale here to kick off Denver Beer Fest in 2012.

Direction to next stop:  Turn right from the brewery and in a half block, head west over a third pedestrian bridge, which crosses I-25. Continue up 16th Street as it changes into Tejon Street, then turn right onto Erie Street just past Hirshorn Park. Turn left on 17th Street and walk up one block to your next destination, on your right.

Recess Beer Garden

After crossing the bridge, you've entered LoHi, one of Denver's hippest and fastest-growing neighborhoods. Before you reach your next destination, stop on 16th Street when you see a 30-foot-high milk can. This is the legendary  Little Man Ice Cream , where they produce hand-made, small-batch ice cream, created with some of the finest local ingredients. Relax with a triple scoop (we're partial to the Salted Oreo) in their outdoor ice cream garden. For those poor souls who have trouble with milk? They sell a Lactaid pill for 50 cents!

Now, on to the next sip. Recess Beer Garden  is a great introduction to this section of town. Although no beer is brewed here, Recess offers 24 beers on tap, including plenty of local and Colorado drafts, along with out-of-state brews, ciders, seltzers, wine, cocktails and kombucha. The staff is beer savvy and will work with you to find the perfect selection, whether it's light, hoppy, malty or complex. Post up in the beer garden with some friends as you play yard games and enjoy everything Denver and Colorado have to offer.

Directions to next stop:  Exiting Recess, turn right and then take another immediate right onto 32nd Avenue. Walk two and a half blocks east until you reach a sharp turn in the road — and your next destination.

Avanti F & B

If all this walking has worked up an appetite, end your night with dinner (and another beer) at  Avanti F & B , one of Denver's most popular spots for foodies. Inspired by European markets and food-truck roundups, Avanti bills itself as a modern-day food hall, offering up seven different restaurant concepts under one roof. Grab a Neapolitan-style pizza, some TexMex BBQ or a traditional arepa. There are also two large bars — one upstairs and one downstairs — with 20 draft beers on tap, many from local breweries.

Directions to next stop:  Return to the Light Rail station the same way you came. From here, you can catch the free shuttle to anywhere on the 16th Street Mall.

Brewery Tours Outside of Denver

Farm house at breckenridge brewery.

Take a tour of the bucolic Breckenridge Brewery  facility in  Littleton . You'll walk through the whole brewing process and see from start to finish how Breck Brew gets the beer to your bottle. Everything from the 100-barrel brewhouse, to the fermentation hall, to the bottling line...and all with a complimentary beer in your hand! You'll taste and talk about the company's different beers and how they're made. Tours cost $3 and begin and end in the tasting room. We recommend grabbing a meal at the excellent Farm House Restaurant while you're there.

Avery Brewing Company

One of Boulder's most beloved brewers,  Avery Brewing Company  is rapidly making headway on the national beer scene. Last year the company moved into a new $27 million "dream brewery" in north Boulder, upping both their brewing capacity and tap room seating.

Left Hand Brewing Co.

Located on the banks of Longmont's St. Vrain River, the patio is perfect for relaxation and beer appreciation. Since its founding in 1993,  Left Hand 's brews, including its iconic Milk Stout and Sawtooth Ale, have wowed beer connoisseurs, racking up dozens of medals at events like the Great American Beer Festival, the United States Beer Tasting Championships, the Brussels Beer Challenge, the World Beer Cup, the International Stockholm Beer & Whiskey Festival and more. You can also visit their newest location: Left Hand RiNo . The Denver outpost is a  full-service restaurant and bar, with 48 taps (including, of course, Left Hand's award-winning beers), along with wine, sake and cocktails.

An all-inclusive tour of New York’s best breweries

Advisor

My wife and I were visiting from out of town and looking for something fun to do and we lucked out as we came across City Brew Tours who just happened to start running tours in NY that weekend.

We went on an awesome brew tour and visited 3 great breweries including Five Boroughs, Circa, and Interboro all located in Brooklyn. It was cool way to experience the flavor of the area. Each spot was unique but we tasted awesome beers at each location.

The tour also included some great Pizza at Circa. We were led by a beer guide who was very funny and kept us entertained throughout, but was also an expert who educated us about the brewing process which was really interesting.

Overall, the all inclusive experience was a tremendous value and well worth the cost. I can't wait to do it again when we get back in NY or one of the other cities in which they operate!

This tour was awesome! A great value for the amount of beer and it included a great selection of different breweries. I particularly loved 5 boroughs and Circa. The pizza was amazing at Circa! This was a really great way to see the different neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Our guide was super funny, like a comedian! I need tour guides to be entertaining and he certainly was. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Do it!

What a fun night we had!!! The 4 of us in the past 2 1/2 weeks traveled from ports in Spain, Portugal and Canada prior to spending time in NYC. Our husbands were very disappointed in their quest to find “good beer.” Well, we finally found it! Isaac and Tim chose 3 excellent breweries in Brooklyn for us to tour and taste the beer. The whole evening was great and the beer we tasted was excellent. We would love to take this tour again on our next visit to NYC.

This tour was amazing. Our tour guide, Isaac, was extremely knowledgeable and in the breweries we went to and in the process of brewing beer. The tour was extremely easy and convenient. We were picked up and dropped off at the same location. We went to three breweries (5 Borough, Circa, Interboro) and didn't feel rushed at any off them. Issac allowed for us to take our time to really enjoy the space, the people, and especially the beers at each of these amazing Brooklyn breweries.
