Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 1756 – 1791 Sinfonía N°39, en Mi bemol mayor, K 543

Les Arts és Simfònic continues to extend its presence in the Valencian Community. This season, the OCV, led by its chief conductor, James Gaffigan, visits the auditoriums of Cullera, Altea and Torrevieja. The orchestra performs for the first time the music that Richard Strauss devised for chamber orchestra on the satirical comedy Le Bourgeois gentilhomme by Molière and Lully. Dances, intermezzi, minuets, grouped in a suite, inspired in part by Lully’s original material, but with a neoclassical sonority and Strauss’s personal style. It is followed by Mozart’s Symphony 39, which already sheds light on a romantic character and serves as a prologue to the set of the last three symphonies (numbers 39, 40 and 41) of the Salzburg composer, considered the best corpus of symphonic music of the eighteenth century.

Barrie Kosky’s mystical and visually striking production sweeps the audience into the enigmatic world of fairy tales—and in doing so tells us more about our times than you’d think. After stops in Aix-en-Provence, Lyon, and Adelaide, his celebrated production can now be experienced at the Komische Oper Berlin.

Tsar Dodon is plagued by worries: his kingdom is threatened by enemies all around, his sons don’t have any sensible advice either, and he’d rather just eat and sleep instead of looking after his country. An astrologer enters the scene with just the right solution: a golden cockerel that crows and flaps if danger looms. Dodon is thrilled, especially since the astrologer declines to name his price for this precious talisman until later on. But then, when war really breaks out, the cockerel crows, and his sons seem to have been lost in action, Dodon has to go there in person—even if his armour doesn’t really fit after a lifetime of indulgence. Instead of the anticipated battlefield, he encounters the unimaginably beautiful Queen of Shemakha. When Dodon falls rapturously in love with her, the disastrous course is set …

Rimsky-Korsakov’s last piece of music theatre paints the magic of Pushkin’s dark fairy tale with a fantastic spectrum of sonic colours. Barrie Kosky translates these into images that are as poetic as they are mysterious, laying bare the innermost core of Rimsky-Korsakov’s fairy tale. Franz Schubert 1797 – 1828 Symphony no. 4, in C minor, D. 417 “Tragica”

Anton Bruckner 1824 – 1896 Symphony no. 9, in D minor

James Gaffigan  conducts the OCV in two key symphonies from the German repertoire. Schubert’s Symphony  No. 4  , composed at the age of 19 and never premiered in his lifetime, exhibits the melodic and youthful brilliance that reigns in the composer’s  Lieder  , in the shadow of the symphonic scaffolding erected by Mozart and Haydn, but also under the influence Beethoven’s drama. Nor was Bruckner able to see the premiere of the  Ninth Symphony  . Despite being unfinished, in three movements, it is appreciated as one of the greatest orchestral scores of all time. He evokes themes from his previous compositions as a reminder, and in the famous final Adagio, deeply inspired, he seems to want to conclude the monumental work as if it were his farewell to life.

Tsar Dodon is plagued by worries: his kingdom is threatened by enemies all around, his sons don’t have any sensible advice either, and he’d rather just eat and sleep instead of looking after his country. An astrologer enters the scene with just the right solution: a golden cockerel that crows and flaps if danger looms. Dodon is thrilled, especially since the astrologer declines to name his price for this precious talisman until later on. But then, when war really breaks out, the cockerel crows, and his sons seem to have been lost in action, Dodon has to go there in person—even if his armour doesn’t really fit after a lifetime of indulgence. Instead of the anticipated battlefield, he encounters the unimaginably beautiful Queen of Shemakha. When Dodon falls rapturously in love with her, the disastrous course is set …Rimsky-Korsakov’s last piece of music theatre paints the magic of Pushkin’s dark fairy tale with a fantastic spectrum of sonic colours. Together with the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin, he conjures up an always child-friendly but never simplistic concert experience for children aged 4 and up as well as their families! “Even having seen it, one cannot quite believe it. Such is the artistry of pianist Daniil Trifonov,” marveled the  Cleveland Plain Dealer . Trifonov has been wowing Aspen audiences with his mesmerizing concert performances and recitals for several seasons. He now brings his unique interpretive stamp to the Mozart concerto that pianist Alfred Brendel called “one of the great wonders of the world.”

There is certainly much to wonder about regarding the work’s nickname. Long known as the “jeunehomme” or “young man” concerto, the dedicatee was actually Jenamy, the daughter of the Paris Opera ballet master. Although this was discovered long ago, the misspelling still sticks. It made sense that Mozart lavished extreme care into this work for the daughter of his well-connected friend at a time when he was desperately seeking a position outside of Salzburg. The inclusion of a minuet in the last movement may have even been a nod to his dancer friend.

Opening the program is Debussy’s  Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun , a shimmering depiction of a lustful satyr’s attempted seduction of sleeping nymphs.

Joel Thompson, composer-in-residence at Houston Grand Opera and known for his acclaimed opera  The Snowy Day , will be represented by a new work co-comissisoned by AMFS. His first orchestral piece, An Act of Resistance, powerfully and concisely expressed the battle between love and conflict, and was warmly received by the Aspen audience last summer.

Following the success of his first symphony, Schumann almost immediately produced a second one. As with many sequels, it didn’t fare as well. Mendelssohn told his friend that his orchestration was too pedestrian, and ten years later, Schumann reworked it, adding heavier orchestration and further unifying the movements as was his original intention. The improvements gave the symphony an intense forward momentum and cohesiveness, inviting the listener to imagine their own narrative as they listen to this passionate and intriguing work.

Bartók’s First Piano Concerto shocked its first audience in 1927 with its percussive dissonance – especially its tone clusters (chordal pile-ups), inspired by a 1925 encounter with the experimental American composer, Henry Cowell. Syncopation and repeat hammerings of a single note dominate the  Allegro moderato . Strings drop out for the subdued central  Andante  with its Stravinskian ostinato rhythms and snaking woodwind counterpoint. This tips without a break into the  Allegro molto  finale, which hurtles furiously to an abrupt end. Originally an 1874 solo piano suite, and later transcribed into colourful orchestral creations by Ravel, Mussorgsky’s  Pictures at an Exhibition  was inspired by him visiting an exhibition of the works of his late friend, the artist Viktor Hartmann. Preceded and punctuated by ‘Promenades’ depicting Mussorgsky’s own heavy physique as he walks around, its ten character pieces begin with clumsily loping ‘Gnomus,’ believed to evoke a design for a nutcracker with large teeth. Further ‘pictures’ include ‘The Old Castle’ – a medieval troubadour – and ‘The Catacombs,’ whose sombre brass theme is based on the promenades. The climax is a majestic depiction of Hartmann’s bell-turret-topped design for ‘The Great Gate of Kiev.’

Like the  Adagio for Strings  which had made him famous the previous year, the  concerto  sounds more rooted in European Romanticism than in the music of his native America, even down to its cloudless first movement emulating Mendelssohn’s violin concerto by introducing its soloist instantly, and its central movement opening on an exquisite extended oboe solo, as Brahms’s does. The finale is then an urgent  perpetuum mobile . Stravinsky was also in his late twenties when, in 1909, Sergei Diaghilev commissioned the ballet, The Firebird. Combining a nineteenth century fairytale poem and a popular Russian fable, it tells of how a prince rescues a princess from an ogre, helped by a magical firebird – and Stravinsky’s glittering score became his breakthrough work, its blend of exoticism and Russian folk style so successful that he thenok worked three concert suites from it.

Just For Laughs is excited to announce the return of comedian, actor, writer and author Jim Gaffigan to Vancouver with his new show Dark Pale Tour. The six-time Grammy nominated comedian will be at the UBC – Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on Sunday, January 15 at 7:30 PM and tickets go on-sale Friday, October 14 at 10 AM

Jim Gaffigan is a six-time Grammy nominated comedian, actor, writer, producer, two-time New York Times best-selling author, three-time Emmy winning top touring performer, and multi-platinum-selling recording artist. He is known around the world for his unique brand of humor, which largely revolves around his observations on life.

A top ten comedian according to Forbes’ 2019 comedy list, Jim released his 8th stand-up special, The Pale Tourist, on Amazon. He was also recently awarded for being the first comedian to reach one billion streams on Pandora. His 9th stand-up special, Comedy Monster, premiered on Netflix last December.

Up next, Gaffigan will be seen as the lead in the Sci-Fi dramedy, Linoleum, and will star as Mr. Smee in Disney’s Peter Pan and Wendy, opposite Jude Law and Yara Shahidi. He will also co-star Jerry Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, James Marsden, and Hugh Grant in Netflix’s Unfrosted, and co-stars in the independent film Susie Searches which premiered at TIFF this year. HBO Max recently announced Gaffigan joined the cast of Full Circle, a limited series from Steve Soderbergh and Ed Solomon which follows an investigation into a botched kidnapping connecting multiple characters and cultures in present day NY. Gaffigan was also recently heard in Disney/Pixar’s highly anticipated film, Luca, opposite Jacob Tremblay and Maya Rudolph.

Gaffigan has a busy acting schedule ahead where he will be seen as the lead in the Sci-Fi dramedy, Linoleum, and will star as Mr. Smee in Disney’s Peter Pan and Wendy, opposite Jude Law and Yara Shahidi.

Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan Announce 2023 Tour Dates

Four stand-up sets together this November

Jerry Seinfeld has a handful of more tour dates coming up in 2023, and this time, his pal Jim Gaffigan is come along with him. The two comedians have announced six arena stand-up tour dates together, Deadline reports.

Seinfeld and Gaffigan’s shows will go down November 2nd 3rd at the Chase Center in San Francisco, November 4th at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, November 9th 10th at the United Center in Chicago, November 11th at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

“Jim and I met doing Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee [Seinfeld’s Netflix show] and have been talking about doing this for years,” Seinfeld said in a statement. “We finally made the schedules work out. Can’t wait.”

Gaffigan aded: “I’m so excited to help out this unknown up and upcoming comedian who many may have never heard of. I know it will be an amazing bunch of shows.”

Jerry Seinfeld has a handful of more tour dates coming up in 2023, and this time, his pal Jim Gaffigan is come along with him. The two comedians have announced four arena stand-up tour dates together, Deadline reports.

Seinfeld and Gaffigan’s shows will go down November 3rd at the Chase Center in San Francisco, November 4th at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, November 10th at the United Center in Chicago, November 11th at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

“Jim and I met doing Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee [Seinfeld’s Netflix show] and have been talking about doing this for years,” Seinfeld said in a statement. “We finally made the schedules work out. Can’t wait.”

Gaffigan aded: “I’m so excited to help out this unknown up and upcoming comedian who many may have never heard of. I know it will be an amazing bunch of shows.”

General ticket sales begin next Friday, June 16th at 10:00 a.m. local time over at Ticketmaster . Once tickets are on sale, you can also find them at StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

Seinfeld has a number of other standup shows on the calendar, including dates in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, as well as in Canada. Get tickets here .

Comedian JIM GAFFIGAN Announced Dates For 2023 “Dark Pale Tour”

Legendary comedian Jim Gaffigan  announced today that he will embark on an all new “ Dark Pale Tour ” headed across the U.S. in 2023 .

Jim Gaffigan is a six-time  Grammy  nominated comedian, actor, writer, producer, two-time  New York Times  best-selling author, three-time  Emmy  winning top touring performer, and multi-platinum-selling recording artist. He is known around the world for his unique brand of humor, which largely revolves around his observations on life. Tickets for his 2022  The Fun Tour , are currently on sale, and his 2023  Dark Pale Tour  goes on sale Friday, October 7, 2022.

A top ten comedian according to Forbes’ 2019 comedy list, Jim released his 8 th  stand-up special,  The Pale Tourist,  on Amazon. He was also recently awarded for being the first comedian to reach one billion streams on Pandora. His 9 th  stand-up special,  Comedy Monster,  premiered on Netflix last December.

Up next, Gaffigan will be seen as the lead in the Sci-Fi dramedy,  Linoleum , and will star as Mr. Smee in Disney’s  Peter Pan and Wendy , opposite Jude Law and Yara Shahidi. He will also co-star Jerry Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, James Marsden, and Hugh Grant in Netflix’s  Unfrosted , and co-stars in the independent film  Susie Searches  which premiered at TIFF this year. HBO Max recently announced Gaffigan joined the cast of  Full Circle,  a limited series from Steve Soderbergh and Ed Solomon which follows an investigation into a botched kidnapping connecting multiple characters and cultures in present day NY.

Gaffigan was also recently heard in Disney/Pixar’s highly anticipated film,  Luca,  opposite Jacob Tremblay and Maya Rudolph.

On the silver screen, his many credits include  Three Kings ,  Super Troopers 1 & 2 , and  Chappaquiddick . 2019 was Gaffigan’s biggest year to date with an astonishing eight films releasing, three which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival   including  Troop Zero  with Viola Davis and Alison Janney,  Them That Follow  and  Light From Light  – with many festival goers and press calling Gaffigan the “King of Sundance.”

Gaffigan also had two films recently in which he debuted as the lead. Jim Gaffigan will debut his next Amazon Original comedy special, “Dark Pale,” on Prime Video on July 25.

“Jim Gaffigan: Dark Pale” is Gaffigan’s 10th comedy special, which will be available to stream in over 240 countries and territories.

“Sometimes when people find out I have five kids, they think I’m good at parenting,” Gaffigan quips in the trailer for “Dark Pale. “Which is kind of like assuming people with lots of cats are not crazy.”

The Gold Section is reserved seating. The Silver Section is general admission seating, first come, first served. The Bronze Section is general admission seating, first come, first served.
