Oiselle Review: The Running Brand For Women That Embraces The Journey

It’s one thing for a brand to use women’s empowerment as a marketing tactic. It’s another to actually empower women. Businesses with savvy advertising teams know that all too well, and often bank on the naiveté of their audiences as an excuse to talk the talk without walking the walk.

Boutique women’s running brand Oiselle doesn’t take shortcuts, though. Maybe doing so would have resulted in just as many sales without nearly as much effort. But Oiselle would rather earn the trust of the running community than scheme for it. The brand has committed to playing the long game, building up a steadfast audience over its 17 years in business by treating their clothing as a means to an end. Oiselle designs apparel for women who have more on their minds than their training plan. From that perspective, clothes become tools for performance—not just aesthetics.

Oiselle commits to empowering women who run.

Women who wear Oiselle learn to think about running differently as a result. They accomplish more on the big stage because they feel capable of doing more behind the scenes. And most importantly, they see running as an integral part of life instead of an escape from it. Oiselle allows women to bring their whole selves to each run.

As a busy runner who squeezes training sessions into every spare window of opportunity, I tested some of Oiselle’s fan favorites to see if they could streamline my schedule. A few key design details have had a noticeable impact on how wisely I can use my time. The sense of safety, comfort and ease that I get from wearing Oiselle apparel translates to faster paces and fewer interruptions. That’s all thanks to the purpose behind the product. Here’s how Oiselle helps women like me strengthen their relationship with running for the sake of enjoyment and performance.

Casper Vs. Nectar: Which Popular Foam Mattress Suits You Better?

The best wayfair outdoor furniture deals to shop this weekend, show up to stand out.

Talent isn’t everything. Even athletes with so-called “natural talent” can’t put their genetics to good use without applying themselves properly. Behind every personal record (PR) is a runner who chose to show up for the daily grind and trust in the process. As running coaches David and Megan Roche like to say, “overnight successes are actually years in the making.”

But the PR’s themselves get more attention than the work that went into them. It’s much easier to stand on a starting line than it is to show up for all the training leading up to that point—especially for female athletes. Safety concerns, physiological burdens and the demands of motherhood make it more difficult to clock quality mileage. Oiselle aims to reduce the barriers to entry for women who struggle to make the miles happen.

“Most runners tend to want to run to perform,” acknowledges Oiselle CEO Arielle Knutson . “But performance starts with the ability to move comfortably and sustainably.”

With that in mind, Oiselle puts the focus on facilitating movement first and foremost. The Oiselle design process starts with meeting the needs of female runners. Performance benefits come about as a side effect of fulfilling those unique needs.

The author, Lucie Hanes, on a run in the Oiselle Toolbelt Roga Shorts

To truly make movement more accessible for women, though, running apparel has to go beyond the basics. Sweat-wicking properties and lightweight fabrics might speak to runners in general, but they aren’t enough to support female runners specifically.

Knutson breaks down the concerns of female runners into four main categories: safety, storage, body and time. Women have good reason to worry about making it home from their runs. The news proves that even the most mundane neighborhood loop comes with potential consequences. Knutson also points out that “when you have breasts and hips, your body moves differently than if you don’t, and clothes feel different depending on how those elements of the female body present themselves on different people.”

And speaking of female physiology, we have different nutritional needs than our male counterparts. According to Dr. Stacy Sims , author of two books and over 70 peer-reviewed studies on the physiological needs of female athletes, “our core body temperature rises about twice as quickly when we start exercising,” which increases our risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Research on the prominence of low energy availability in female athletes suggests that women should pay extra attention to mid-run fueling, too. All that adds up to more essentials (see: quick calories) that have to go somewhere.

360-degree pockets on the Toolbelt Roga Shorts allow for easy access to mid-run fuel.

Every piece of Oiselle apparel addresses at least one of these categories, if not all four at once. The Firecracker line features reflective bird patterns for visibility in low light, while plentiful pockets provide handy storage for phones, gels, layers and anything else your run requires.

A wide variety of lengths, inseams and heights account for the different ways that female bodies convey their curves. Long sleeves with built-in watch windows accommodate sneak peaks at your metrics in cold weather, for the many women who struggle with poor circulation. Bras with adjustable, hook-able straps accommodate nursing mothers. High-waisted bottoms prop up the abdomen for moms-to-be. And subtle colors, patterns and fits make Oiselle clothing on the whole appropriate for runs, gym sessions to carpool duties to Zoom meetings when there’s no time for a wardrobe change.

Wide straps plus a phone pocket between the shoulder blades combine comfort with accessibility on ... [+] the Flyout Bra.

These are the kinds of details that make or break running apparel—and running in general—for women. The “shrink it and pink it” approach to female gear design has left us believing that we’re the problem because we can’t make do with the same things that work for men. But why should we? Women come to running with our own bodies, responsibilities and priorities. Oiselle puts running in the context of life as a woman.

Root For The Underbird

The busy lives and full plates of female runners means that it can be tough for even the most elite athletes to put all the pieces together. Oiselle took a step beyond thoughtful gear design to give women with top-tier potential the opportunity to actually apply it.

“Oiselle works with athletes who are up-and-comers, who have yet to be sponsored, because a support system can mean everything,” explains Knutson. “We launched the Underbird program leading up to the Olympic Team Trials Marathon to support five elite athletes who wanted to race for a spot on the team but might not have been able to get there logistically or perform their best on their own.”

These five runners received a stipend, gear and a platform to tell their stories leading up to the Trials. The storytelling component holds the most value for Oiselle. Knutson recognizes that “there’s validity to sponsoring the very top athletes who are winning: they’re influential and have high reach, which matters for brand exposure. But always winning isn’t always relatable. The everyday runner tends to relate more with stories that include the challenges that all athletes experience, but that those in the spotlight all the time don’t necessarily share. Life is not linear and it’s inspiring to hear about athletes who are achieving that level of excellence while being normal humans with setbacks and work and families and late-onsets to running.”

The Oiselle Underbirds told their stories en route to the Olympic Trials. None of their contracts contained clauses dependent on performance or podiums. One runner didn’t even make it to the start line due to injury. Oiselle’s response? The brand continued supporting her through the Boston Marathon for another chance at seeing her efforts through. Oiselle doesn’t hold its athletes to certain standards because Knutson and her team understand that nothing in running (or in life) is guaranteed. Supporting an ambitious athlete doesn’t ensure results. It does, however, give them the best chance at success.

“When we work with an athlete, it’s not just about the athlete but about the whole person,” emphasizes Knutson. “We’re working with them on the running level and the human level. It’s not just about winning or performance, it’s about the whole self. Ultimately, our athletes go on to perform well because they feel supported on all levels.”

Oiselle Gear Review

Just as race results don’t define athletes, clothes don’t define Oiselle. The intention behind them does. These are a few pieces of apparel that exemplify Oiselle’s intentions for female runners of all backgrounds and ambitions.

A Hands-Free, Chafe-Free Sports Bra

Oiselle flyout bra.

What’s with all the flimsy, strappy sports bras out there? Those might work for a low-impact yoga class, but they don’t do much for stabilization while running, even for the not-so-well endowed. The Flyout Bra trades spindly straps for comprehensive coverage from shoulder to shoulder. The broad back provides more support up front by redistributing some of the weight. Wide shoulder straps won’t dig into the skin either, especially under the pressure of running vests or bulky layers.

Oiselle capitalizes on the additional back coverage by including a phone pocket between the shoulder blades. The Flyout isn’t the first sports bra with a phone pocket that I’ve tried, but it is the first that I’ve been able to actually use. Others put the pocket too low on the back for my short arms and inflexible shoulders to reach, or made the pocket too narrow for a phone to easily slide in and out of without a wrestling match. The Flyout’s smooth fabric in combination with the dimensions and placement of the pocket make this bra a comfortable, functional phone storage solution.

A Full-Coverage Top To Streamline Your Runs

Oiselle flyout long sleeve.

I will never buy a long sleeve shirt without a watch window ever again. And now I can finally retire all the shirts that I cut my own poor excuse for a watch window into. What seems like a small detail bears a lot of significance on the run. Women run colder than men, especially in the extremities, and experience reduced blood flow in the hands and feet in response to cold exposure. With that in mind, there’s no compromising on hand coverage during chilly runs. That shouldn’t mean that women have to sacrifice other aspects of their run in exchange.

With the Flyout Long Sleeve, we don’t have to. A simple, subtle slit in each wrist opens up to reveal your watch screen so runners can keep an eye on their metrics without breaking stride to fiddle with layers. Those wasted seconds add up when you’re squeezing miles into your schedule like a game of Tetris. Plus, hitting paces and sticking to rest-to-work ratios matters during high intensity interval sessions. Access to data in real time makes a difference in helping runners meet their goals for the workout.

Watch window aside, the Flyout Long Sleeve wins in brisk weather with its relaxed yet secure fit and ultralight yet protective fabric. Thumb holes and reinforced hems hold the whole shirt in place. No sweat, no chill, no bulk.

Flowy Shorts That Don't Skimp On Storage

Oiselle toolbelt roga shorts.

Running in flowy shorts feels nice and airy during warm weather workouts, but at the cost of practicality. Barely-there designs don’t offer much or any storage space, even for just the essentials. I’m left to choose between opting for compression shorts, which don’t allow for nearly as much air flow on hot days, and breaking out a vest or belt, which feels like overkill on shorter runs. But the Toolbelt Roga Shorts have solved that dilemma. These shorts make smart use of real estate with 360-degree pockets all around the waistband. That way, the legs remain loose and light while the naturally tight part of the shorts holds your belongings.

The stretch-mesh waistband pockets lie open at the top for easy access, with one zipper pocket on the sacrum for valuables, though even the open-top pockets pass the jump test for keeping a tight grip on their contents. All the pockets, both open and zippered, are deep enough to hold extra-large smartphones, too. I do find that these shorts run a bit big. Luckily, an internal drawcord helps cinch in the waist to keep the Roga’s from slipping, especially when loaded down with equipment.

Find them in three inseam lengths: Mac (1.75-inchh), Regular (4-inch) and Long (6-inch).

Compression Shorts That Double As A Running Belt

Oiselle o-mazing power shorts.

I’m a big fan of storage around the waist rather than down the leg. The female body’s center of gravity lies right below the belly button. Carrying weight close to that centralized point feels more stable and eliminates the bounce factor that throws off your stride. The 360-degree belt-style pocket system on the O-Mazing Power Shorts makes them similar to the Toolbelt Roga Shorts above, but in a lightly compressive rather than loose style. Unlike the Roga’s, these pockets are all open at the top—no zippers to safeguard valuables—but feel more secure than the pockets on the Roga’s due to the tighter fabric. There are also no seams separating the pockets from one another on the sides, so there’s less of a length or width limit to what you can store inside. The same internal drawcord design helps customize the fit and supports the weight of your belongings.

I reach for the O-Mazing’s when I’m pushing the envelope on how far I can go without lugging a running pack. The lack of a separate zippered pocket leaves room for a small flask like the HydraPak SoftFlask 250 to slide into the waistband along the low back instead. I find that the compressive fit of the O-Mazing Power Shorts can handle bigger, heavier loads without slipping down or riding up as well.

The O-Mazing Power Shorts come in three different inseams: Mini (2.5-inch), Regular (5-inch) and Long (8-inch)

Music Review: Johnny Cash’s ‘Songwriter,’ a collection of unreleased songs from 1993, is a journey

NEW YORK (AP) — In 1993, Johnny Cash was between record contracts — and just about to embark on an iconic collaboration with producer Rick Rubin that would span the last 10 years of his life, starting with 1994’s “American Recordings.”

During that crucial time in his career, Cash immersed himself in crafting and recording original demos that showcased his songwriting prowess. Those songs, once set aside, will be released Friday as a complete album. Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, stripped the recordings back to just his father’s voice and acoustic guitar — and enlisted co-producer David “Fergie” Ferguson and some musicians his father previously worked with to round out the recordings.

Aptly titled “Songwriter,” the album features 11 tracks all penned by Cash. Just two tracks will be familiar to fans of the Rubin records: “Drive On” and “Like a Soldier” were previously released on “American Recordings.” While the Rubin renditions favored deeply-felt minimalism — just an acoustic guitar and Cash’s idiosyncratic vocal tone — the “Songwriter” versions possess a more layered sound with additional instrumentation. Not better, just different.

Emphasizing Cash’s role as a songwriter, this collection exists in contrast to his typical albums or recorded live performances, which often blend his own compositions with other writer’s songs. This album allows listeners to appreciate Cash as a performer, composer and lyricist, highlighting a unique intersection of his artistic journey.

Image

The previously released first single, the rockabilly infused “Well Alright,” exudes Cash’s unmistakable style to such a degree that it could have easily found a place alongside classics like “Big River.” (In an alternative timeline, the track might appear in The Grateful Dead ’s repertoire back in the day — they’ve certainly covered many Cash songs.)

In whole, “Songwriter” provides insight into a short creative phase of Cash’s career that would become interrupted by a brilliant creative collaboration with Rubin. While not his most audacious work, “Songwriter” still serves as a poignant journey into a defining moment of Cash’s musical legacy. And who doesn’t love to hear previously unheard material from the Man in Black?

'Very Kind To Share His Journey': Djokovic Commends Fritz's Help In Knee Recovery

journey infinity review

by Nurein Ahmed

Novak Djokovic credited his fellow ATP rival Taylor Fritz with guiding him through rehabilitation from the torn meniscus he sustained at this year's Roland Garros.

Djokovic was a major doubt to play at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, which commence on Monday, July 1st. He slipped on the court multiple times while playing Francisco Cerundolo at the French Open, although he could complete the match, which he won in five sets.

After that, he underwent some tests, and an MRI scan revealed a tear in his right knee. After briefly consulting with his team, he withdrew from the tournament before his quarterfinal clash against Casper Ruud to undergo surgery .

As it stands, Djokovic looks set to play in the third Grand Slam of the season and has been drawn to face 27-year-old Czech Vit Kopriva in the first round. His quick recovery is a minor miracle, considering that his surgeon in Paris was downbeat about his chances of making it to London.

Djokovic has now shared the details of the private conversation with World No. 13 Fritz, who was in a similar predicament after the 2021 French Open and recovered from the meniscus tear with an even shorter timeframe than the Serb to make it at Wimbledon that year.

"Taylor Fritz! Three years ago he had pretty much same situation. Actually, I had probably like four, five days more than him. So, he was the first person I reached out to when I found out that he had similar injury and circumstance." Djokovic, during his on-court interview in Hurlingham
"He was very kind to share his journey and really helped out with some of the experiences and advices, you know, how to approach it because it’s the first time I had this kind of a knee injury."

Djokovic has been playing with a knee brace in his practice matches and during the exhibition in Hurlingham, where he defeated Daniil Medvedev . He will be pursuing a record-tying eighth title in the next fortnight.

2025 Infiniti QX80 First Drive Review: So close to being great

Stellar design, on-point engine, abundant tech ... queasy ride.

journey infinity review

NAPA, Calif. – Confession time. I kind of forgot that the Infiniti QX80 exists. Sure, it’s gotten a refresh or two in the past few years, but it's essentially been the same big ol’ three-row SUV since 2010. I’m pretty sure I used to call it Fudgie the Whale. Or maybe it was Pudgie the Whale. Like I said, it’s been a minute.

Now I’ve gotten a taste of the 2025 QX80 and hey, what do you know, there is a lot to like. The third-generation of the body-on-frame SUV goes big on tech, style and comfort, making it a respectable triple into the right-center gap. However, its ride quality keeps the QX80 from being a home run.

Fudgie’s V8 was nixed in favor of a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 good for 450 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Sure, it doesn’t sound quite as good as the older powerplant, but it produces more power and better fuel economy to boot – 18 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive and 17 with four-wheel drive. The old one managed only 15 mpg with four-wheel drive. With low-mpg numbers like these, that’s actually a huge difference. The new turbo V6 is well-mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, putting the power down to the rear wheels as standard in Pure and Luxe trims, or all four wheels as an option with those trims or as standard with the higher Sensory and Autograph.

There are no complaints about power delivery. It has more than enough grunt for merging and the transmission downshifts readily for easy passing. There are five drive modes as well as a Personal setting, but I spend my time alternating between Standard and Sport. The latter tightens up the steering and powertrain, allowing the SUV to hustle fairly well on a twisty road without much body roll. It’s no Mercedes-AMG GLS, but starting at under $85,000 including destination, it’s not nearly as expensive either.

journey infinity review

It’s when you’re just toddling around town that the ride quality becomes a problem. All but the base Pure trim comes equipped with an “Electronic Air Suspension” and “Dynamic Digital Suspension,” the latter function monitoring the QX80’s motions to electronically apply damping forces. This isn’t necessarily anything new in the automotive world, but other manufacturers just do it better. Up and down motions are well-controlled, but I’ve been in row boats with more side-to-side stability. My head gets tossed around like I’m piloting a Jeep on a dusty back road, and all I’m doing is driving the paved streets of Napa Valley, California.

I’d be curious to drive the base Pure model without the Digital Dynamic Suspension to see if the standard coil-spring suspension makes any difference. Unfortunately, there weren’t any available at this press event. As it stands, I wouldn’t buy an SUV that makes me vaguely queasy, let alone $112,590 for the Autograph trim I drove.

It’s a shame too, because there are so many other things that Infiniti got so very right. The styling is 100% on point and I’d put it up next to the Range Rover or Cadillac Escalade any day. Infiniti says the grille was inspired by a bamboo forest – if they say so, but the QX80 has a very handsome face. The segmented daytime running lights are up high and narrow while the headlamps are lower, forming a bit of a dimple on either side of the grille. There is even some cool negative space going on here as part of the aerodynamics, funneling air around the wheel wells.

Twenty-inch wheels are the smallest you’ll get, but the 22s on my tester look right at home on the QX80. Door handles are flush with the body, popping out when you approach the rig, but it’s the rear end that really seals the deal here. The horizontal LED light bar spans the full 83 inches of width, and it’s segmented like the running lights up front. However, the bar is narrower in the middle, giving it a cool, edgy look. Strong work, Infiniti.

journey infinity review

The excellent design continues inside with open-pore wood trim and aluminum accents, semi-aniline quilted leather seats and plenty of soft-touch surfaces. The seats are supremely comfy with all trims getting heated in all three rows. Most trims get cooled first- and second-row seats, and there is even an available massage function in the first and second rows. It’s not the most refreshing massage on the face of the planet, but massage is like pizza – even bad massage is still massage.

And it’s plenty roomy, too. The third row is actually comfortable for full-sized adults, which hasn’t been a given for full-size SUVs, and they even recline a bit. The second-row seats take a bit of time to move out of the way, but once they are moved forward, it’s easy enough to get into that third row. All rows get USB-C charge ports with up to 15 watts of power for quick device charging.

Dominating the dash are two 14.3-inch displays. The gauge cluster is configurable three ways, and the center display comes with Google Built-in. That means integrated Google Maps with greater functionality than the CarPlay norm, downloadable apps from Google Play, and voice control courtesy of Google Assistant. What’s really cool is that navigation directions, music and phone calls can be set to play just through the driver’s side headrest speaker, the most novel of 24 other speakers included with the Klipsch Reference sound system (Sensory and Autograph trims). Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard as well, but you won’t get the individual audio function.

Under the infotainment screen is a 9-inch touchscreen for HVAC and drive mode controls. This one uses haptic feedback to tell you you’ve successfully selected a feature, but it takes quite the stab to get it done – a light tap or swipe won’t do it. Just below this screen is the push-button transmission selector surrounded by a piano black surface. Be prepared for lots of fingerprints in this section of the dash.

However, my favorite feature here is the Autograph’s cooling center console box. It’s big enough for a six-pack of soda and tall enough to accommodate larger bottles of water and whatnot. The “Cool Box” available in the Lexus GX is much smaller. At the onset of my ride, I immediately put two bottles of Diet Dr Pepper inside the box and they were chilled to perfection within 15 minutes.

Although I question the utility of some of the QX80’s technology, I can’t deny the practicality of the 170-degree front wide view camera feature. In an Infiniti-designed demonstration, the camera was able to see a child’s bicycle hidden behind another SUV parked just forward and to my right. It was not visible to me in the driver’s seat. The tech is even more impressive when displayed across both screens.

Other cool camera tricks are an invisible hood feature that projects an image of what is under the car to the two interior screens as well as a 360-degree camera that can detect moving objects and comes with eight pre-selected viewing angles. I’m also here for the rear camera mirror, which provides a wide-angle video feed of the view behind the car directly to the rear view mirror. It’s particularly helpful when your rearview would otherwise be filled with the heads and luggage of passengers.

The QX80 Sensory and Autograph have a built-in dashcam that can automatically record any traffic events. Drivers can also manually hit the record button in case of, say, their friend making a fool out of themselves by dancing in front of the SUV to demonstrate the feature. Not that my friends would do that. My friends are more likely to use the in-car camera to take a selfie photo or record a podcast with the video recording feature. It’s certainly a neat little gizmo and you can access the camera through the Infiniti app and get an interior cabin look in real time. However, this still seems like novelty tech.

The least serviceable tech feature has got to be the biometric cooling also found in the top two trims. In theory this infrared sensor detects when a second-row passenger is overheated and automatically adjusts the zoned climate control to max cooling. I mean, it’s handy that the driver doesn’t have to do anything but how hard is it to just set the HVAC for 65 and hit the Auto button? Not very.

As for advanced driver’s aids, all the usual suspects are here, including blind-spot monitoring that works when towing a trailer up to 33 feet in length. ProPilot Assist is here in both hands-on and hands-off guise. The more advanced ProPilot Assist 2.1 even has a two-mode lane-change feature. The driver can initiate a lane change by signaling and then let the car make the steering and throttle inputs. However, I let the car decide when to change lanes based on surrounding traffic and my set speed. As the driver, I have to accept the lane change, but the maneuver is accomplished cleanly.

The QX80 can tow up to 8,500 pounds and cargo space has expanded considerably to better haul kids and their required detritus. Behind the third row is now 22 cubic-feet of space (quite a lot among full-size SUVs), expanding to 59 cubes with the third row folded flat, then to 101 with both rows folded. The air suspension can lower the QX80 nearly 3 inches for easy loading of cargo as well as passengers.

In all, I’m very impressed with the 2025 Infiniti QX80. Its design is stellar, the powertrain is on point, and the features and technology are all a huge improvement over the previous generation. I wish the ride quality were a bit more sorted, but that might be something the company can address in next year’s model or through an over-the-air update.

I started going to IOP at the Meadows in April and I absolutely love this place. I don't understand why this place has negative reviews. I love having a routine, and coming here every morning during my medical leave. I will miss this place so much after I graduate. I wish I could stay longer! -Overall I feel very safe and supported in this environment. I am excited to come to IOP every morning. All of the staff is amazing, and create a safe positive environment. -The front desk staff is always kind, helpful, and very knowledgeable about everything. Whenever I ask a question, they are always ready to help me with anything! -Group therapy is a safe place to be vulnerable and express your worries or get things off your chest. The group's feedback is always welcomed. I would have shared more, but I was struggling with sinus issues that made it hard for me to talk. -Mental Health classes are informative and enjoyable. I learned a lot of DBT skills I can use in the real world when I return to work. This actually inspired me to go back to school. -Everyone is assigned a therapist, and individual therapy occurs on a weekly basis. My therapist is amazing, kind, empathetic, and goes above + beyond to help me overcome my anxiety and ADHD. She taught me how to set boundaries, and manage distress tolerance. My therapist is the best therapist I've ever had, and I wish I could get treatment here long-term. -The neurofeedback sessions have significantly helped me with sleep and mood. I struggled with insomnia for a couple of years. After doing a couple of sessions, I am able to fall asleep immediately within 30 minutes. My anxiety symptoms have also improved. -Art and yoga classes are enjoyable and allowed the group to relax and have fun! We use art therapy as a way to express ourselves and process our emotions which was helpful for me. -On Fridays, they offer acupuncture, DBT classes, and pizza for lunch. I wish I could come to the Friday sessions more often, but I am often busy with doctor appointments.

I am currently enrolled in the Meadows IOP. I absolutely LOVE this place. I just graduated from this program lead by therapist Tina Ho. Stephan was doing group DBT on Friday morning that allowed me to attend as well. It was a fantastic experience at this facility. Frankly speaking, when I was referred by my physician to try its 8-week program, I had no idea what's ahead of me. This lack of information definitely gave me some resistance to go, especially when I saw the low ratings on Yelp and Google map. There were some speculation in my head similar to a movie scene of a hospital with strange people and procedures. The intake process and the first weeks also appeared awkward to me, together with the long paperwork and various terminologies. All these added to my confusion. Curiosity on how they would treat me and my desire to get support were the major force that kept me staying at the beginning. However, all these made sense when I looked back, and I'm glad I got through the entire program. Here is what you would generally expect in the 8-week half-day program (aka. The IOP): Monday: 2 hour group sessions and Yoga Tuesday: 2 hour group session and art class Wednesday and Thursday: 3 hours group sessions. You'll have a few sessions of individual therapy sessions by the lead therapist of your group, and a few sessions of neural-feedback, which is you watching video or playing a game for an hour while there are electric signal collected on your head via the sensors. At the beginning, I had the hypothesis that the brightness of the screen is the result a feedback loop to do something. The technician told me it wasn't the case. All of the attendees in my group I talked couldn't figure out what is doing eother. One lead is that there seems to be a published paper showing the effectiveness of this tech, but I stopped there on my investigation. The brain center that does the neural feedback also has a room that you can use massage chair and some other machine to relax. The 8 week program covers one topic each week. The lead therapist will go through the binder and some additional print-out to support the group. On Friday morning, there are Yoga, Acupuncture, Taiqi, group DBT optional for you to attend. On Friday afternoon, there is also ACA (adult child alcoholic ) meetings open only to Alumni. I think the key ingredients for the program are: - the group-style support that you would never got from individual therapy sessions. - The intense therapy sessions that allow therapist to really dig deep to clean the wounds. The key elements for you to get the most out of it are: - Open and active engagement. I know this is hard for many of us at the beginning, as it is part of our symptoms to not doing those. I'd suggest you do it without holding back and just with the idea of challenging the program to see if it can make any change to you. - It is important for you to do your part. All the structure of the program, from my point of view, is to reshape our habits on how our brain would react to our (extreme) emotions, and we are the key to reshape those habits. The major take-away for me is that I finally got a comprehensive understanding of "mindfulness", and being able to practice it with confidence, which I think is a core skill to allow all skills to work for our mental health. There is also a 4-week full-day program called PHP, which I didn't take. And I think it is for people who need more intense care and attention. I feel passionate and want to share these with everyone who are considering additional mental support, so that the reviews do not get you the survivor's' bias, and miss this program. Definitely, matching is a most important factor in therapy. As this is the only one IOP I attended, I don't have a comparison or benchmark. I heard there are other types of programs that sit in forest, which sound like a good idea as well. Hope you find the right program.

I completed the the IOP program over the course of 2 months, for workplace related issues. Overall, I was very pleased with the care I received. My group therapist was amazing at managing the group boundaries, letting me have the space to share and be vulnerable. I felt safe, even when new people joined the group. There are plenty of other activities during the week (yoga, art, meditation, etc.), and all of the therapists provided me with many skills to help me with my recovery process. The office staff was kind and supportive as well. They quickly helped with my disability paperwork and made the State EDD process painless. These recovery programs do require hard work, but I really enjoyed my time. It's based on how much effort you're willing to put into learning about your recovery process and improve your tools for success.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. We love hearing feedback about our outpatient locations and program features! We wish you continued success in your journey and hope your words will help someone else who is considering seeking treatment.

I'm greatly saddened to have to leave a 1 star because what was once an amazing environment for healing was broken by bureaucracy and corporate greed. Once Jim Corrington, from Corporate in Arizona, flew in and I did not feel safe or cared for as a client. I ended up leaving before my Graduation Date because I felt the disorganization by management was causing the quality of the therapy in my group to go down. I do have to say the the two therapist that run the PHP program- Jacina Laney and Stephanie Samson were amazing and I couldn't have made it through the first few weeks without them. **Any Comments from Meadows in regards to my review should be disregarded. I left on my own accord and they were very aware of how disappointed I was with them and their lack of management and leadership.

The clinical care coordinator Tina triggered me and made my condition worse before, during, and months after i left the program. She made it hard for me to heal and make the most out of the support I needed and received from program group members. Even though i barely interacted with her, she had a significant impact on my experience at Meadows and retraumatized me countless times. She is not trauma informed but she insists that she is. When I built the courage to speak to her and calmly and professionally point out ways in which she triggered everyone in our group and when I brought up the fact that everyone in our group said they didn't feel emotionally safe because of her, she rudely raised her voice and said "I'm a trauma expert, if you want to leave the program be my guest", knowing how hard it is for people to find care. She is not credentialed to diagnose people or suggest that they take medication, but she will frantically throw around diagnosis without ever actually respecting or listening to patients experience and she will spread fear in patients by trying to convince them that they need medication(even though she is not trained to know this) and she will convince the patients and the parents that patients need to stay longer or go to another facility. People in my group became more depressed and anxious and even lost their job because she did not have any awareness of her power and role in their lives and their treatment. She disclosed confidential information that a patient did not want shared with the group and then sent that patient to another state for residential treatment because she exaggerated the issues they were experiencing. She should be screened for narcissistic personality disorder. She got a good therapist fired so she could be next in line to take the job she has now.

Never have I been met with such resistance from a business to provide basic information like cost and the components of what they have to offer. It took several attempts to get answers about the time of day that the virtual program was offered. Jessica, the lead admissions person claimed that they couldn't be specific about daily programming because they needed to be flexible to suit the needs of the facility. Wow. How does that work for people seeking mental health treatment to have their program shifted with little or no notice? She insisted on speaking on the phone which she claimed was to build relationships with clients which made no sense. If that's their intent they should direct inquiries to a clinician. It was worse than dealing with a car salesman in terms of her vagueness and the amount of basic info she was refusing to share. They claim to have a trauma focus but she was unwilling or unable to answer any of my questions about it. I believe their intent is to push people into their 45 day inpatient program because during my first inquiry that was the program they were selling me without a clue about any of the reasons I was seeking treatment. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that they work on commission. Strongly recommend anyone pursuing treatment here proceeds with caution. Sounds like they want gullible people who don't ask too many questions and just go along with whatever they have to offer. Equally surprising was their refusal to allow clients in their virtual program to access any of the in-person services they offer on Fridays like acupuncture and use of their "brain gym". Couldn't give me a straight answer as to why someone who lives in the area would not be able to have this as part of their treatment. And, as expected, no answer as to whether or not the virtual program was less expensive due to the omission of these services.

May 15, 2023

Linda, we hate to hear you had a frustrating experience on the phone, but we appreciate you taking the time to tell us about it. We recognize it would be easier if we could provide a simple price list that applied to every potential patient, but factors like insurance provider, level of care needed, and options you choose (including in-person or virtual) all impact the final cost. That’s why we gather information from each caller so we can create a customized cost estimate. We love questions and do everything in our power to provide each caller with all the information they need to make an informed, appropriate treatment decision. If you want to discuss this further, you can reach us directly at [email protected].

I understand how out patient programs operate given my background. This center does not acknowledge trauma can often come with chronic pain, in my case tension headaches. As the trauma heals so do tension headaches for most people. I was chastised in front of the entire group because I had not been able to come since my headaches hit when I woke up early into my treatment. It was inappropriate, disrespectful and discriminatory to people with physical health issues. It is not standard of care to public shame people for being late, having chronic pain or substance use disorder (which is a diagnosis in the DSM-V btw and "addiction" is outdated). When I asserted myself to administration, the therapist who shamed me made it known in her reply that she assumed my medication was a controlled substance - it was no such thing. This attitude that you are "less than" is unacceptable - patients are not treated as equals. Treating some "patients" as "good" and others as "flaky" drives divide when people are trying to heal. This center needs to be held accountable that some recieve quality care while other do not. People who need to receive help for trauma or substance use disorders should seek help from a qualified therapist, support groups or look elsewhere. Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Gatos is a kind and supportive environment where people are treated as people.

Photo of Gemma H.

Maybe an acceptable program if you're intrinsically motivated to recover from substance abuse or struggling with work/life balance, absolutely not the program to attend if you're looking to heal from trauma, especially if there are dissociative aspects. I toured to make sure The Meadows would be an appropriate fit. The director of outpatient services and I spoke extensively. He assured me I was a candidate for EMDR and that my stay could be extended to 4-6months to meet my treatment goals. On my second therapy session I was told The Meadows is a phase I trauma program and as such they would not provide EMDR. I was informed of my upcoming discharge via email during a trauma anniversary. The discharge date fell at the 2 1/2 month mark, as opposed to the timeframe I'd been given. I was told the discharge was due to "resource issues", which doesn't make any sense: I wasn't attending Neurofeedback, a second morning group was set to start, and someone else I was attending the program with is now in their 4th or 5th month. It feels more that I was brought on for revenue, given that I was the 4th person in group when I began, and discharged when they had more patients/revenue. Neurofeedback is being done without a qEEG to map a patients baseline brainwave functioning. I was told that there could not be negative side effects from Neurofeedback by The Meadows, and had to consult with an outside practitioner to learn that a qEEG is standard practice and Neurofeedback can cause side effects. There were technical difficulties every time telehealth was utilized, despite being a year into Covid. Overall, I wish I hadn't attended. I left more unwell than I went in due to how my case was handled. Because I was at The Meadows for over 2 months, my insurance will not cover another program for the foreseeable future, should I want to try and seek a program's help again.

Aug 23, 2021

We're sorry that your experience didn't live up to your expectations. We are continually assessing patients for progress during their treatment time with us and we adjust the treatment as our findings, and the patient's needs and background, indicate. The Meadows Outpatient Center does offer EMDR, neurofeedback, and trauma work, but not every treatment method is appropriate for every patient or safe for them to engage while they're with us. As patients complete their time at The Meadows Outpatient Center we try to work with them to find additional resources so they can continue their recovery journey.
