Frequently asked questions

How does kayak find such low car hire prices.

KAYAK compares car hire prices from all major car hire companies such as Thrifty, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, Sixt, Payless and more to find you the best deal.

How do I find the best car rental deals on KAYAK?

A simple car hire search at https://www.kayak.co.uk/cars scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather car hire deals from across the web and put them in one place. On the search results page you can then use various filters to compare your options for your preferred hire car type and easily choose the best car hire deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

What is special about comparing car hire deals on KAYAK?

Looking for the lowest price? We can make that happen. Our car hire price sorting gives you quick access to the cheapest and/or the most expensive deals—it’s your trip, so it’s up to you. Sometimes, the same car hire deal will be available on several provider sites. All of these providers are made visible for you to choose from, but we highlight one main car hire provider based on factors like customer popularity or ratings.

Which kinds of cars can I hire on KAYAK?

On KAYAK you can find deals on all types of car rentals, including small, medium, large, SUV, van, luxury, lorries, convertibles and passenger and cargo vans.

What do I need to know before booking a car hire?

Hiring a car can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time or you’re hiring in a new country. Finding the right price, understanding the add-ons and staying up to date with policy changes can be a challenge. That’s why KAYAK has produced the ultimate guide to hiring a car to help you cut though the jargon and make the right choice for your car hire. Find tips and insights for how to book your hire, what car hire insurance you’ll need, how to deal with a car hire agency and what extra fees to expect (and avoid!).

What is the minimum age to hire a car?

The minimum legal age to hire a car depends on the country you’re hiring in. In the USA and Canada, drivers must typically be at least 21. However, some states and provinces allow drivers as young as 18 years old to hire a car. In Europe and Asia, the minimum age varies between 18 to 21 years old but some agencies might require drivers to be at least 25. Keep in mind that most agencies add daily fees for drivers below 25 years old. For more information about the minimum age to hire a car, visit our age requirement guide.

Can I return a hire car to a different location?

You want to pick up a hire car in one city and drop it off in another location? We can arrange that for you. When performing a car hire search on KAYAK, simply select the option "Different drop-off". You'll then be able to enter both your desired pick-up and drop-off locations. Most car hire agencies call this option a "one-way hire" and charge a return fee.

Can new drivers rent a car?

New driver policies vary for each car hire agency. While some require drivers to hold a driving licence for a minimum of 1 year, others only ask for a valid driving licence for the duration of the hiring period. We recommend new drivers to confirm the requirements directly with the car hire agency.

Can I hire a car without a credit card?

Renting a car without a credit card is less common but not impossible. Many agencies allow debit card car hires from airport locations as long as you provide proof of return travel. Be aware that the agency might run a credit check on you and will most likely place an authorised hold on your account as a security deposit. If you plan on paying with a debit card, it’s always a good idea to check the conditions with the rental agency before booking.

Can I drive cross country in a hire car?

In the USA, it's typically not an issue to drive across state lines or to cross the border to Canada. However, you'll most likely pay an extra insurance fee if you want to travel to Mexico. Similar rules apply to Europe, as you'll need to cover a cross-border fee if you want to cross from one country to another. Failing to do so will most likely invalidate your car hire insurance. Crossing borders in Africa and Asia is generally more difficult and additional border documentation is necessary. We recommend always informing the hiring agency about your planned itinerary.

Is it cheaper to hire a car at the airport or off-site?

You will generally find the best deals if you select an off-site airport location. Airport car hire agencies offer a very convenient option for those wanting to pick up a car directly on-site. However, as demand is often higher, prices also tend to get slightly more expensive. Some off-site car hire agencies offer shuttle service from the airport.

Search cheap hire cars with KAYAK. Search for the cheapest car hire deal for all major destinations around the world . KAYAK searches different travel sites to help you find and book the rental car deal that suits you best.

A joy to use

Kayak has been a fantastic company to use for anything travel! & has continued to impress me with their fun and very easy to use features. Airline companies often set standard pricing for their flights and the caveat that the normal person is looking for it matching all these flights with their specific needs i.e. layover timeline, # of bags, airline make/model, & flight times. A ‘Good Deal’ is a very generalized term and many other apps use that as their main means of persuasion when in fact it’s clear that sites like Kayak are so good at categorizing exactly what meets your needs and alining airliners to your schedule, like advertised they have a multitude of tools like bag number and layover timeline settings with a accurate representation of what the cost will be regardless if it is two separate companies. If you choose a flight selection that has a 2 hour layover for one airliner and you select ‘book’ the airliners website which it directs you to within the app has that selection already selected. I could go on and on about how easy and secure this app is to use so please give it a try.

Use hopper instead

I’ve used hopper forever as I travel monthly. A friend recommended kayak and I have booked 2 trips with it. The first it rerouted my and added another stop without letting me know on a round trip. The second, which inspired this review was a multi city trip. It messed up my reservation and I spent an hour at the help desi fixing it during check in for the first flight. After this story, it rerouted us for our next stop to have a layover in city in the opposite direction without sharing this information to or giving an indication as to what happened to our initial booking. I then went in to move a flight time after already paying for the insurance, I looked up how to do this on their app and when I hit “change” to see other options it simply DELETED our flight reservation with no notification or prompt warning us. We were not given a refund or other alternatives to switch back in or change flights. If you were wondering they do not have customer service as they say you need to contact the airline for assistance as they are only a third party site. For our flight home it has moved our reservation to the following day when I work and with another timely layover. I genuinely never write reviews but I hope this saves someone the trouble 😊

Developer Response ,

Hi there, Feel free to share screenshots or more information about your booking experience with the provider of your reservation via www.kayak.com/support. We'll gladly take a closer look.

I love this app

I got this app for one plane flight, simple as that. I was planning on deleting it right after because I thought I had no use for it. But then I started to realize that any trips I was planning on taking would show up on this app and would be organized by time and date (because I connected my email). I’m planning on taking an Amtrak to the airport and then back again & accidentally chose the wrong date for the train back, and because Kayak organizes the trips so well, I was able to catch that but if not for this app, that would have been $20 down the bin & a missed class. I honestly love this app because there are no annoying adds that pop up when I’m trying to figure my plans out & it helps me organize everything so well. It also works offline when I’m looking at my already planned trips which will help out a lot when I’m abroad. I don’t use the search tool within the app for hotels cars or flights, but they have that option as well.

Kayak is one of the many websites out there to help you find the best travel deals.

However, unlike other popular OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) that Kayak often gets lumped in with, Kayak is not an OTA — it’s a metasearch engine for travel deals.

Kayak shows you prices from other websites and will send you to that website to complete your booking.

Plus, with tools like Flight Tracker, Guides, and Kayak Trips, this site acts as an assistant travel planner. You can research and organize all aspects of your trip in 1 spot. That all sounds great, right? But how do you actually use Kayak!?

Overall, searching for travel on Kayak is easy as long as you know a few simple tips and tricks to find the best deals.

This guide will show you everything you need to know to use Kayak to search for and book your next trip.

Recommended Flights and Popular Destinations

On the home page, Kayak shows your “Recommendations” and routes to “Popular Destinations” based on your home city all before beginning your first search.

These sections are for very specific flights and dates, so they might not be much help if you’re looking for a certain itinerary. However, if you are flexible, these sections offer some great deals!

For example, I found flights for as little as $79 round-trip from my home airport to popular destinations like Orlando and Myrtle Beach. I also found a round-trip from my home airport to Dublin, Ireland for only $648!

Many of these deals are for flights as close in as 2 weeks, so if you’re looking for a last-minute travel deal, Kayak is a great place to start your search.

Hot Tip: You can change the origin city for your Recommended flights and Popular Destinations by doing a flight search with the new city as the origin.

How to Search for a Flight on Kayak

To start your search on Kayak, input your departure city, arrival city, and dates; then hit “Search” just as you would on any other website. This will take you to the next page, which shows a list of available flights. This is the main booking page and it includes a wealth of information.

By default, the results will automatically populate sorted by “Recommended.” You can adjust this setting to sort by Cheapest, Quickest, Earliest Takeoff, Latest Takeoff, Earliest Landing, or Latest Landing. To do this just select how you want to sort using the drop-down on the upper right-hand side of the screen under the main search bar.

Fee Assistant

This is a great feature that lets you include any baggage fees in the price you’re seeing. Since baggage fees can vary between airlines, this is a great way to see an actual cost comparison without having to search separately for each airline’s baggage fee policy.

Right underneath the Fee Assistant is a large box with a featured flight in it. Keep in mind that this is a sponsored ad, meaning the featured airline paid to be there. While this doesn’t automatically mean the featured deal is bad, it’s smart to keep in mind that it’s not featured simply because it’s a good deal!

This little box at the top left of your screen gives you Kayak’s best estimation of how prices might change in the next week. The box will tell you if it’s a good time to buy, or whether you should wait. This estimation is only for the following week, so I recommend taking their advice with a grain of salt.

If you toggle “Track Prices” to ON, you can create a custom price alert for your itinerary . This requires an email address and automatically sets up an account for you with Kayak.

Kayak's Flight Predictor

Booking Preferences

Under the “Our Advice” box on the left side of your screen, you can go into lots of detail about your flight preferences. Customize your list of available flights using any of the following filter options:

  • Number of Stops
  • Booking Sites
  • Flight Quality
  • Layover Airports

Narrow flight search results on Kayak

Compare Sites vs. Kayak

On the right-hand side of your screen, you’ll see this box where you can compare what you find on Kayak to numerous online travel agencies and travel websites.

Clicking on the “Compare” button will take you directly to the chosen website and automatically search your itinerary.

Searching Flights and Completing Your Booking

The main middle section of the page is where you’ll find available flights for your chosen route. Click on “View Deal” to see more information about the flights and complete your purchase.

Depending on the route you’re choosing, the View Deal button will take you to either the airline’s website, Kayak’s booking tool, or another OTA such as Expedia or Orbitz to complete your purchase. You will be able to see where the booking is from right above the orange button.

On some flights, there is more than one booking option, but thankfully Kayak features the lowest price option first. To view other options for your chosen flight, click on the down arrow next to the orange View Deal button. This will display a drop-down box of all the prices on different websites.  Please note that this is not available on all flights.

Bottom Line: Kayak is not an online travel agency — it’s a travel search engine.

Hacker Fares

On some flights, instead of seeing the airline displayed under the price, you will see “Hacker Fare.” Don’t worry — nothing is being hacked and these prices are totally on the up and up!

All this means is that Kayak found a good deal on a flight by bundling 2 one-way tickets (usually on different airlines) instead of a round-trip on 1 airline. This can be a great way to get the best deals.

Kayak Hacker Fare

The only thing to keep in mind with these Hacker Fares is that you have a little less protection if something goes wrong.

Let’s say you’re going to Chicago for a long weekend, but bad weather cancels your outbound flight. Since it was a short trip, you just decide to cancel the whole thing. If you had a round-trip ticket, you’d have much more leverage to get a refund for the second leg of your trip.

But since you booked a Hacker Fare, your return flight is a one-way on a different airline, meaning that return flight has no real relationship to your outbound flight. It would be hard to get a refund for the second leg of your trip; as far as the airline is concerned, this is stand-alone flight. While this is a fairly rare situation, it’s good to be aware of if you purchase a Hacker Fare flight.

Search for a Flight by Destination

Another way to search for flights on Kayak is at the bottom of the home page, where you’ll see a number of popular cities. Click on “Flights” directly under the city name to bring up a page that shows lots of flight deals from your home airport to your chosen destination. These are all for specific dates, so again flexibility is the key to making this tool work for you.

Search for cheap flights on Kayak by destination.

Kayak Explore

This is a cool feature that is a little hard to find. On the top menu, click on the drop-down box from the “More” tab, and then click on Explore.

Using this tool, you can select your home airport, date range, price range, and trip duration to see where you can fly within those parameters. It’s a fun way to choose a destination when you have an idea of when you might like to travel but aren’t sure where you want to go.

If you hover over the price box on the map, you can see what city the flight arrives in. Once you’ve found your destination, click on the city name, then click on “Find Flights” on the right side to choose your flights and complete the booking.

You can also use the Kayak Explore tool to search for a themed trip, such as Amazing Beaches, Family Friendly Cities, UNESCO Sites, or Hiking Hot Spots. After choosing your home airport, dates, price range, and travel time, choose your travel theme on the right side of the page. This will narrow your search to only destinations featuring the theme you chose.

Kayak Explore

Searching With Flexible Dates

Sometimes having a day or 2 of wiggle room in your travel plans can save you big bucks! Using the 3-day flex search tool, you can see your selected travel dates plus or minus 3 days. This is a great way to see if you can save some money with a little flexibility.

To use this feature, select “Flexible Dates +/-” on the left side of the calendar drop-down box. You can also choose a Flexible Weekend or Flexible Month search. Now when you click on the Search button, you’ll see a chart of prices so you can easily see the cheapest days to fly to your chosen destination.

Hot Tip: Even a day or 2 of flexibility can lead to big savings! Be sure to search for your trip with flexible dates to see your best options.

Kayak Direct

This is a cool page under the “More” drop-down on the main menu. Click here to see all the places you can fly directly from your home airport. This tool also displays the approximate flight time, distance, and airlines that fly the specific route. It’s a pretty neat tool to check out if you’re looking for a destination you can fly to without a layover.

Booking Through Kayak

Occasionally it will appear that the flight you chose is bookable through Kayak ; this will show up as a Kayak price. However, while it looks like you’re booking through Kayak, you are really only using Kayak as a user interface — the booking is actually through a third party (usually an online travel agency like Travelocity or Priceline ).

This is important to know: if you have any problems, you will need to contact the party through which you booked, not Kayak. In this case, the ticket was booked through Priceline even though the user didn’t click through to that website.

Booking Flights On Kayak

Searching for a great hotel on KAYAK is really simple. First, choose “Hotels” from the top menu. Then input the number of rooms, number of guests, city, and dates you’re looking for — click on the magnifying glass icon to search.

On the left side of the page, you’ll see all the options to filter your search. You can narrow your results by stars, review score, price, freebies, location, neighborhood, amenities, ambiance, and property type.

Right above all of the search options is a box to click through to a map, which shows your chosen city with all the hotels marked on it. Hover over each dot to see the hotel name, rating, and price, or click on each dot to continue with booking that hotel.

Hot Tip: You can also search for popular areas for eating, sightseeing, shopping and nightlife on this map.

The middle section of your screen will have a list of all the hotels available for your chosen dates. Just like with flights, these default to being sorted by “Recommended.” If you want to sort by price, adjust the settings at the top right underneath the search box.

Note that the price you see to the right of the hotel name is not necessarily the cheapest price! However, the great thing about KAYAK is that you can see the prices for each hotel on lots of different OTAs as well as the hotel website. You’ll see these prices underneath the hotel name and rating; click the drop-down menu for a full list.

Tips for Booking Hotels Through Kayak

Prices shown for hotels don’t include taxes, which can be pretty high. For example, I searched for a hotel for a long weekend in Chicago and chose the Park Hyatt (listed for $475 per night from Expedia). When I clicked through to complete the booking, I discovered per night taxes of $82.66!

Hot Tip: Prices shown from hotel websites are not member rates. Be sure to check the member rates on your specific hotel’s website — they are usually lower!

When I clicked through to Expedia , Orbitz , Travelocity , and Hotwire , they all featured the $475 per night price and added taxes for a total of $2,230.64 for a 4-night stay.

However, when I went to book directly with Hyatt, I found a non-member total for 4 nights of $2,230.60 ($.04 cheaper), while the member price was $2,141.35 for 4 nights. So by signing up as a World of Hyatt member (which you should definitely do because it’s free!) and booking directly through Hyatt, you’d be saving $89.29.

Plus, you will be eligible to earn hotel points and take advantage of any elite status you may have when you book directly through the hotel’s website.

Hacker Stay

Another hotel available for the same weekend had an advertised price of $429 on all the major OTAs including Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, and Hotwire. This was also the price offered directly from the hotel, making the total for a 4-night stay booked through any of these sites $2,014.60.

Hot Tip: Booking a “Hacker Stay” fare can save big bucks on your next hotel stay.

However, this hotel had a “Hacker Stay” rate of $392 per night. The total price for the Hacker Stay was $1,839.45 — that’s a savings of $175.15 for the exact same hotel room!

When I clicked through to book, I found that this stay consisted of 1 night booked through Hotels.com and 3 nights booked through Expedia. If you choose this route, you’ll end up with 2 separate reservations and might have to switch rooms halfway through your stay (though the hotel can usually combine those reservations upon check-in).

You can save selected hotels to come back to later by clicking on “Watch” right under the orange View Deal button. This will automatically create a saved Trip for you with all your hotel selections.

To track prices for your search, just toggle the button at the top right corner of your screen (to the right of the search box) until you see a check mark.

To start your search for a car rental on Kayak , simply input your chosen city plus dates in the search bar at the top of your screen. At the top left you can choose whether you want to drop off the car at the same or a different location as pickup.

Clicking on the calendar icon will bring up a drop-down box to choose your dates, pick-up time, and drop-off time. You can also choose to bring up comparison sites underneath the location box to view prices at Hertz , Hotwire , Priceline , Budget, and Avis .

Just as with searching for flights or hotels on Kayak, searching for rental cars follows a similar pattern. To the left of your screen you’ll find all the options to help narrow your search. You can choose to sort your search by car capacity, car type, payment type, rental agency, price, and other car options like number of doors or type of transmission.

After you narrow your search, all your options will be featured in the middle of your screen. Above the list you can choose how to sort your results (recommended, lowest price, or distance), and you’ll see an alert if it’s a good time to book.

Kayak Car Rental Search

Each listing will tell you the type of vehicle, bag capacity, number of doors, rental company, and whether this is a Special Rate. These Special Rate deals will keep the car rental agency hidden until booking is completed. Use the drop-down arrow in the orange box or section on the right side of the screen to compare Kayaks pricing to other websites.

Finding the Best Price for Car Rentals on Kayak

In an example search, I found car rental prices all over the map. I searched a midsize car for 4 days in Chicago and came up with a price of $200. This doesn’t include tax, so you do have to click through to your chosen website to see what the actual price will be. Here is what I found:

  • Kayak – $216.40
  • Orbitz – Not available once I clicked through, but there were other car options available
  • Thrify – $216.40 (I clicked on their “hot deals” button and got the price down to $207.69)
  • Cheaptickets.com – Not available once I clicked through, but there were other car options available
  • Rentalcars.com – Didn’t show price at all

There was also a “Special Rate” available for a similar midsize car for only $139.19. If you aren’t picky about exact car type or who you rent from, these Special Rate prices offer a great deal.

Lots of people use OTAs and travel search engines to find great vacation package deals. To see Kayak’s deals , click on “Packages” in the search bar at the top of your screen. From here you’ll see a search bar just like in the Flights section.

First, fill in your destination and dates to get a list of flights. Once you select the flight you want, you’ll be able to add a hotel to make a package deal.

Bottom Line: You can save money by booking your hotel and flight together through Kayak’s “Packages” option.

Right underneath your chosen flight you will see the “Add a Hotel” section. To see what kind of deals I could get, I searched for a 5-night trip from Boston to Las Vegas. This search returned 3 featured offers with varying levels of advertised savings, and I could see more deals by clicking on the blue “View More Hotels” button.

Hot Tip: The hotel offerings change quickly! The offers I had changed even when I did the same search only minutes apart. If you see something you like, you should book right away.

The first option was a hotel stay at Treasure Island Hotel and Casino, which advertised a $367 savings. I tend to be skeptical about package deals, so I wanted to check it out myself. Booking this package including a round-trip flight plus 5 nights at Treasure Island would cost $800.86.

Booking the flight separately was $216.37, and booking the hotel directly through their website would be $951.60, for a total of $1,167.97 if booked separately. That does work out to a $367 savings when booking the package, which is pretty significant and exactly as advertised.

Find the Best Times to Travel to Popular Destinations

If you have a destination in mind and are looking to find the most inexpensive time to travel, Kayak’s Packages have you covered there too.

Scroll to the bottom of the Packages tab, and you will see a section called “Search Vacation Deals By Destination.” When you click on a city in this section, you’ll be able to see price trends throughout the year. This tool will show estimated pricing for a package each month, allowing you to pick the most economical option. (Keep in mind these are just estimates and actual prices may vary.)

Kayak Packages

Hot Tip: Kayak no longer has the ability to search for and book cruises.

Kayak Guides is a great tool to start planning some activities for your upcoming trip. Guides can be found by clicking on the “More” drop-down box in the main search bar at the top of your screen.

From here you can input your destination or search by region or popular destinations.

In each city guide, you’ll find general information about the area as well as suggestions on things to do, places to eat, most and least expensive times to visit, and even average weather throughout the year. You can see how to get there including links to take you to search for flights. You can also see information about different areas of the city including links to hotels in that area.

One of my favorite parts of this tool is the map of the city that shows you popular areas for sightseeing, dining, shopping, and nightlife. Just click on the item you want to see and watch the colors on the map change to reveal the popular areas for your chosen activity.

This map also shows hotel locations. For more information, just click on a dot — this will bring up hotel info as well as a link to click through and book.

Kayak Guides Map

Bottom Line: Kayak Guides is a great resource to help plan every aspect of your trip, including best times to visit, local weather, and best areas for sightseeing, dining, shopping, and nightlife.

You can find Kayak trips in the upper right corner of your screen. This is where you can keep all of your trip information and itineraries in 1 spot. There are several options for managing this feature:

  • Add your trip manually
  • Connect your email inbox to import booking receipt emails
  • Forward your booking emails to [email protected].

Once your flights are added, you will be able to see real-time updates for check-in, flight status, and gate change information. Plus, you will be able to access your itinerary offline.

Hot Tip: Use Kayak trips to organize and share all of your vacation details.

If you are traveling with a group, you can share all the trip details with your group by creating a link to your trip information page. Once you’re viewing your trip details, look for the blue “Share” button, which brings up a link to your trip information that you can send to friends and family. You can also allow someone else to edit the trip information from this button.

Kayak Deals can be found under the More drop-down in the main menu. This section differs from Kayak Packages in that you can’t build your own trip; the deals you find here are set packages that all include different things (vacation packages, cruises, flights, hotels, etc.).

Some of these deals were straightforward and easily bookable through an OTA, while others were a little more complicated. For example, I found a 6-day Dublin and Killarney rail vacation package, but I couldn’t just click through and book right away. Instead, clicking through took me to an OTA where I’d need to request a quote. While that’s not really a big deal, it does take more effort than just hitting the “buy now” button!

While you might think Kayak is an online travel agency (OTA) like Expedia or Orbitz, it’s really a different animal. Kayak is a search engine, and it’s a great tool to use to begin your travel planning.

The great thing about Kayak is that it compares prices between all the OTAs you’re familiar with (like Expedia and Orbitz), plus airline and hotel websites. This lets you see where the best prices are without having to go to each individual website.

Kayak also offers tools to help with planning and organizing your trips. It’s a 1-stop shop to research and plan any vacation you can imagine!

The Complete Guide to Booking Travel with Kayak

Frequently Asked Questions

How does kayak work.

Kayak is a travel search engine. It searches hundreds of travel sites including OTAs, discount suppliers, and the airline/hotel/car rental agency’s direct websites to show you all the options in 1 place.

How Do You Change or Cancel a Flight Booked on Kayak?

You will need to contact the provider that you clicked through to (airline, hotel, or an OTA) to book your reservation for customer service. If you booked on Kayak, then you can go to the Bookings area of the site (accessible through Trips) to get support and information on your specific flight/hotel stay/car rental, etc. However, most likely you will still need to contact the provider directly.

When Is the Best Time to Book Airline Tickets Through Kayak?

As with booking flights from any website, there is no real answer to this question. There are lots of factors that go into airline ticket prices, so it’s hard to pinpoint when a fare will be at it’s lowest. However, Kayak does offer a few tools to help you.

The “Our Advice” box in the upper left corner of your search screen gives you a short-term prediction of how prices might change in the following week. You can also track your search by changing the Track Prices button to “On.” This will trigger a daily Price Alert email advising you of the current price trends for your search.

Are Kayak Flights Refundable?

Generally, no. Any flight that you access through Kayak will be subject to the airline’s cancellation policy. However, any flight booked with a U.S.-based carrier at least 1 week before departure can be canceled up to 24 hours after booking without penalty. (Be careful with American Airlines, as their policy only allows you to hold a flight for up to 24 hours without payment)

Are Kayak Hacker Fares Safe?

Yes, Kayak Hacker Fares are safe as long as you understand how they work. Hacker Fares are simply a combination of one-way flights that are cheaper than a round-trip. These flights can be on separate airlines, which means the second leg of your flight might not be protected.

For instance, if bad weather cancels your outbound flight, you might decide to stay home and skip your trip altogether. But since your return flight is on a separate reservation, it will not be refunded like your canceled outbound flight. Overall, this risk is relatively minor, but it’s good to know before you purchase a Hacker Fare.

If you are booking a Hacker Stay for your hotel, this will consist of 2 separate reservations. The only downside to this is that you might have to switch rooms during your stay. However, many times you can ask the front desk to combine your reservations when you’re checking in.

Why Doesn't Kayak Show Southwest Flights?

Southwest fares are only available on Southwest.com. You will not be able to search for these flights on Kayak or any OTA like Expedia or Orbitz.

How To Transport A Kayak For All Vehicles | Ultimate Guide

If you’re looking to get into kayaking, one of the first things you need to figure out is how to transport your kayak. The good news is that there are many ways to do it; the best method depends on what kind of car you have.

This guide will show you all the different methods for transporting a kayak, so it doesn’t have to be complicated. You’ll learn what vehicles work best for each way!

In this guide, we will cover the following topics:

  • How to determine the weight capacity of every car, SUV, and truck with a comprehensive sizing chart
  • How to size your kayak for your vehicle
  • Roof rack systems to transport your kayak by any vehicle type
  • Kayak mounts and cradles for one to four kayaks
  • Tips for transporting a kayak with a car, truck, or SUV
  • Tips for using a kayak trailer with pros and cons
  • Instructional videos on how to load your kayak onto the roof of your car using an electric kayak lift rack. Another video explains how to use a trailer.

By the end of this guide, you will have all the information you need to choose the best method for transporting your kayak by any vehicle type.

Let’s get started!

What Are The Typical Ways To Transport Your Kayak?

There are several ways to transport your kayak. You can put it on top of your car with a roof rack, inside the bed of a pickup truck, or attach it to a trailer behind your vehicle. If you choose to keep it inside, ensure there is enough space in your vehicle for the kayak so that the windows and hatchback can close.

Before you buy a kayak, find out which car can transport it most comfortably. The kayak’s dimensions depend on the vehicle, so this research will save time and effort later.

Choose a method of transportation based on your budget, fitness level, and convenience.

How Big Of A Kayak Can Your Car Carry On Its Roof?

If you decide to put it on top of your car, use our kayak sizing chart below to find the best option for your sedan, SUV, or truck. Start by measuring the length of your vehicle, and then use the chart to determine how much weight it can carry on its roof. This information will help you to size a kayak properly on your car.

Kayak Size Limits Chart By Vehicle-Class

How to pick a kayak based on the size of your car.

Now you know what vehicle you will be using to haul your kayak and the ideal size limit. Let’s see what kayak types are within that size range.

Most kayaks are 8-10 feet long and 30 inches wide, making them easily transportable.

They can be made from different materials, including polyethylene, thermoformed ABS-acrylic, fiberglass, or Aramid (Kevlar) . Hull size and shape also determine the activities the kayak is suitable for.

If you have a smaller car, like a coupe, it’s best to look for a lighter kayak with thermoform construction. These kayaks are easier to lift onto the roof rack and won’t take up too much space in the car.

An inflatable kayak is an excellent option for smaller vehicles, hikers, and overnight campers.

If you own an SUV or bigger car, find a rotomolded kayak. It is usually more reliable and will provide increased hull strength and stability while on the water. The potential downside is that it might be too heavy to lift yourself.

If you’re planning on carrying your kayak inside your car, choose one that will fit comfortably into your vehicle with the hatch closed. Measure the inside of your car before choosing a kayak to know what size will work best.

How Long Are Kayaks Typically?

Not sure which kayak style or size is right for you? Here are six of the most popular styles along with their typical lengths.

Do You Need A Roof Rack For A Kayak?

If you are planning to transport your kayak on the roof of your car, you will need a roof rack for it. Here’s why.

Kayaks need roof racks to secure them to the vehicle rooftop when you carry them on top of your car. This system usually includes a roof rack with crossbars and an associated set of cradle mounts.

The racks and cradle mounts keep the kayak secure, allowing you to travel without worrying about damage or accidents. In most instances, they can also be used on a bare roof.

So, it’s also the recommended way to go!

Find out the average costs and standard conditions for renting a kayak for you or a friend by checking out our latest post. . We’ve even included some helpful instructional videos to see exactly how each carrier type works.

Is It A Good Idea To Use A DIY Kayak Rack?

No, I wouldn’t recommend it. There have been many documented cases of people’s kayaks being damaged or even coming loose from homemade racks – which can be very dangerous for you and other drivers.

It’s better to play it safe and avoid DIY racks altogether.

What Type Of Car Top Do I Have?

Do you know what kind of roof top you have on your vehicle? The roof style can vary, depending on your car type, which impacts what roof rack components you need.

Some cars come with side rails, while others have fixed points for attaching a roof rack. Others have a bare roof without these structures. Generally speaking, SUVs and Jeeps will have at least side rails.

You can inspect your vehicle’s roof top and use the images below to identify what type it is

Here are the most common roof types:

  • Flush side rails
  • Raised side rails
  • Roof track rails
  • Fixed-mount points

Roof racks provide an easy way to transport your kayak by vehicle type and roof design. There are a few things to consider when choosing one.

First, consider how many kayaks you need to transport. A single kayak roof rack may be sufficient if you only need to transport one. However, consider a double or even triple kayak roof rack or stacker style if you transport multiple kayaks.

Second, consider the size of your kayaks. Some roof racks are designed specifically for smaller kayaks, while others can accommodate larger ones.

Third, be specific when considering which car the roof rack will go on—some racks are only compatible with certain types like SUVs or sedans.

Fourth, make your life easier by selecting a roof rack system that is easy to use. Lastly, keep your budget in mind when selecting a roof rack system. They typically cost anywhere from $300 to $750

Review our follow-up article to help you select the right roof rack system for your needs.

Kayak Mounts And Cradles For One To Four Kayaks

There are several different types of kayak mounts and cradles that you can use to transport your kayaks. The kind you choose will depend on the number of kayaks you need to transport, your budget, and your level of expertise.

If you have a roof rack system installed on your vehicle, mounting your kayak is a relatively straightforward process. You’ll need a set of kayak mounts or cradles designed to work with your specific roof rack system. Most roof rack systems can accommodate one to four kayaks, so if you’re planning on taking more than one kayak with you, get a mount that can accommodate multiple kayaks.

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular options:

Fixed J Style

Saddle Cradle:  Saddle cradles are a great way to transport your kayak. This rack system consists of two cradles supporting the boat’s hull and straps securing the vehicle’s kayak. They are easy to install and can be loaded/unloaded by one person. They attach to two roof racks and have a weight capacity of 80-90 lbs.

The adjustable cam straps on these kayak cradles provide a secure way to transport your kayaks, while the padding protects them from damage. Prices start at $120 per pair.

The J-cradle is not only universal but also one of the most stable on the market. Keeping your kayak at a 45-degree angle gives you more room to mount other kayaks on the crossbar without sacrificing stability.

This kayak rack has a tilted cradle that will keep your boat in position while you strap it down, making the entire process simpler and quicker. Padding on the rack will help protect your boat from any damage during transport.

They are relatively easy to install and can be loaded/unloaded by one person. Prices start at around $130 per pair.

Stacker Kayak Mounts:  The great thing about Stacker Kayak Mounts is that they can transport up to four kayaks at once. This is perfect for large families or groups of friends who enjoy kayaking together. Additionally, the stacker has no size limit, so don’t worry about the length of your kayaks.

These are designed to hold four kayaks on your vehicle. They are harder to install than the other options but someone with a bit of instruction can do it. The prices for a single pair start at $160.

How Can You Carry Four Kayaks On A Roof Rack?

Using a stacker kayak mount, you can transport multiple kayaks on wider vehicles like vans and SUVs. Here is how it works:

The stacker has two vertical bars that attach to the crossbars on your car. Then, you tie down the kayaks to the strap eyes at the top of each stacker.

Once you secure the load straps on both ends of each kayak, use attachable hood loops for more support. This makes transporting your kayaks this way much simpler and safer, especially when multiple kayaks are involved.

4 kayaks on a stacker carrier

How To Strap Down Your Kayak To Your Car Roof

The main goal is to transport your kayak safely. This means that it needs to be securely attached to your vehicle. Here are the steps you need to take to do this:

I suggest that kayaks be 3 feet shorter than the car they’re transported on. This will allow for easy tension application.

  • You should have the front of your kayak facing the front of your car when strapping it. This will help reduce wind resistance while driving. The back end of the kayak should be facing the back of your car.
  • Feed the lead ropes through the front and back carry handles of your kayak
  • Attach hood loops on both ends of each rope
  • The kayak’s stern rope should be tied to your car’s back end first
  • Then, you can ratchet down tension to the bow rope

Whatever your means of transportation, taking these steps will make sure your kayak is as safe and secure as possible when you’re out on the open road.

Transporting Kayaks On A Car

In the section below, I will explain the process of safely transporting kayaks on top of vehicles.

how long a kayak can your vehicle carry

Most vehicles can accommodate 8-9.5 foot kayaks; however, larger ones may be too long and extend over the hood, making it difficult to secure them with tie-downs at both the bow and stern.

If you have more than one kayak, some bigger cars can handle a rack system that carries 132 pounds or two to three smaller to medium-sized kayaks. The weight limit is determined by how strong your car’s roof is.

Smaller cars can pull a kayak on a trailer designed specifically for this purpose. I will be discussing this in a later section.

Beware of extended loads for your vehicle. Below is an excerpt from Texas law about extended or oversized loads:

TxDPS Logo

“A vehicle or combination of vehicles may not carry a load that extends more than three feet beyond its front or, except as permitted by other law, more than four feet beyond its rear.”

T exas Department of Public Safety |   Extended Loads

Kayak Racks For Cars

The most popular roof type for smaller cars is the naked roof. If you’re planning on attaching a roof rack to your vehicle, you’ll need a naked roof option.

If your car does have raised side rails, flush side rails, or fix-mount points on the roof, you can explore other possibilities .

Kayak Cradle Mounts For Cars

When it comes to kayak carriers, you have a few options that will mount onto your roof rack.

The J-cradle and saddle kayak racks are the most popular, but you can also use the stacker design as long don’t exceed the weight limit.

Transporting Kayaks On A Truck

Several options are available to those looking to transport their kayaks via pickup truck: on the roof, in the bed, or on a trailer. Let’s take a more detailed look at each one.

kayak with two kayaks on roof top

On the Roof: The most common way to transport a kayak is by tying it down with cam straps to your truck’s roof. Many trucks come equipped with roof rails designed to attach a roof rack. The only downside is that you may need some help loading the kayak onto the roof.

In the Bed: The most popular way to transport a kayak is by strapping it down in the back of a truck. Although this method is straightforward, it does have one disadvantage: if your truck also carries other items (like camping gear), there might be little room left when packing a kayak.

On a Trailer: The third method of kayak transport is by pulling it with a trailer attached to your truck. Many trucks come with a tow package or hitch receiver, making it much more convenient to launch and load from the ramp at the boat dock. Although this approach has its perks, there are some drawbacks as well; it generally costs more than other methods, you have to take extra care while driving and parking, and you’re responsible for ensuring the kayak and trailer are secure.

Kayak Roof Racks For Trucks

Although pickup trucks come in both two-door and four-door models, most roof vendors only sell racks that fit a 24″ span between racks. Therefore, this guide will focus on how to add a kayak roof rack onto a four-door cab.

Most truck cabs have a roof without side rails or cross bars, so you will need to use one of the  naked roof rack options  for your truck.

If your truck has a camper shell over the truck bed, you have additional options. The extra roof length is comparable to an SUV roof reviewed below.

Kayak Mounts For Trucks

The J-cradle and saddle-type kayak rack are both reasonable choices, but I recommend using something other than the stacker option. It is not only more expensive, but it takes up a lot of space on your roof.

Hauling Kayaks In A Truck Bed

Hauling a kayak in the bed of a truck is a great way to transport your kayak. Here are no weight limitations for transporting your kayak in the back of a truck. So, you will have no problems taking a heavy kayak in the back.

Attach the T-bar extender to the receiver hitch. There is a practical length limitation of around 14 feet based on the truck bed length. Longer than that, you can risk extending too far to support its weigh.

I’ve hauled kayaks on a T-bar for years and have never had any problems with my bed extender or the kayaks themselves.

Learn all about hauling a kayak in the bed of a truck here .

Transporting Kayaks On An SUV

An SUV has the largest roof surface area, which gives it plenty of options for rooftop carriers. Most SUVs have side rails and optional crossbars supporting up to 165 pounds.

kayaks on top of an SUV

However, the estimated kayak length varies depending on the size class of each SUV. For example, a Jeep Cherokee can comfortably carry a 12.5-foot kayak, while a Chevrolet Suburban can accommodate one 14 feet long kayak.

You will need some assistive device if you plan on loading large and heavy kayaks onto an SUV’s roof.

Transporting Kayaks On A Trailer

Another option is getting a trailer if you want to avoid mounting your kayak on your car. Many manufacturers sell trailers specially designed for hauling kayaks, including kayak saddles. Or some people prefer to modify existing utility trailers. Trailers provide easy access and won’t damage your vehicle.

Choose a trailer for your kayak that can hold the weight of your kayak plus any additional items you want to bring with you.

Another consideration is how the trailer will attach to your vehicle. Most trailers come with hitch ball mounts or some connection system, so check that out before you buy! Make sure you have a compatible electrical connector on your towing setup.

Make sure to check your state’s regulations for registering your trailer.

I recently bought the Trailex SUT-220 S trailer, and it’s been a great purchase overall. I’ve had no problems with it.

Pros And Cons Of Using A Kayak Trailer

  • Quickly back in trailer into the water to launch
  • Easy to load the trailer into the water
  • No heavy lifting onto the top of your vehicle
  • Requires a trailer hitch on your vehicle
  • States require registration for all non-farm trailers operating on public highways.
  • If your manufactured trailer’s gross weight exceeds 4,000 lbs., it must be titled.
  • Newly assembled trailers must be titled regardless of weight. This fact includes DIY trailers.

For more information about trailer registration see your state regulations. For Texas, see  here .

How Can You Transport A Heavy Fishing Kayak?

Fishing kayaks are a great way to get out on the water and do some fishing, but they can be difficult to transport due to their weight and length. The optimal transportation is a pickup truck bed or a lightweight kayak trailer. Let’s look at some of the best ways to transport your kayak.

The first thing you need to consider is the weight limit of your vehicle. Most kayaks weigh between 60 and 80 pounds, but some can be as much as 150 pounds. If you have a larger vehicle, the maximum roof weight limit is usually 165 pounds, so you’ll want to choose a kayak that’s less than 150 pounds.

The next thing to consider is the mount. The ideal kayak mount is a simple saddle cradle that loads from the vehicle’s rear. If you’re using a pickup truck, you can just put the kayak in the truck’s bed. You can also use a roof rack, but loading and unloading yourself can be more challenging.

Finally, it would help if you decided how to secure the kayak. You’ll want to use two straps in an X-shape over the kayak when attaching the kayak. The first strap should go over the hull in front of the cockpit. The second should go over the hull behind the cockpit. You can then use ratchet straps or cam buckles to secure the kayak to the carrier.

I have been using a Ford F-150 with a T-bar bed extender and receiver hitch. The T-bar allows for a 14-foot kayak without a weight limit.

I have also recently purchased a 15-foot light weight kayak trailer and now use that. It’s easy to use and transport, and it makes transporting a kayak a breeze!

The Benefits Of Kayak Lift Racks

There are kayak lift assist devices you can install on your SUV Kayak lift racks, also called integrated lift systems, make it easier to put a kayak on top of your car’s roof. They come in various shapes, designs, and levels of assistance.

Some lift-assist racks are complete rack sets that include everything you need, while others may be an attachment to an existing kayak rack.

These systems are perfect for people with back issues who need a second person to help them load the kayak. You can load the kayak from the vehicle’s side or back.

These racks make it much easier to load and unload your kayak by yourself. They come in many different designs and levels of assistance, so you can find one that fits your needs. And the best part is that you don’t have to lift a finger. The system does everything for you.

One example is the Thule Hullavator Pro which raises 40 pounds of the kayak’s weight, which is significantly more than half of the overall weight of the kayak!

Frequently Asked Questions

How does kayak find such low rental car prices.

KAYAK compares rental car prices from all major car rental companies such as Thrifty, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, Payless and more to find you the best deal.

How do I find the best car rental deals on KAYAK?

A simple rental car search at https://www.kayak.com.ph/cars scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather car rental deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare your options for your preferred rental car type and easily choose the best car rental deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

What is special about comparing rental car deals on KAYAK?

Looking for the lowest price? We can make that happen. Our car rental price sort gives you quick access to the cheapest and/or the most expensive deals—it’s your trip, so it’s up to you. Sometimes, the same rental car deal will be available on several provider sites. All of these providers are made visible for you to choose from, but we highlight one main car rental provider based on things like customer popularity or ratings.

What kind of cars can I rent on KAYAK?

On KAYAK you can find deals on all types of rental cars including small, medium, large, SUV, van, luxury, pickup truck, convertible and commercial vehicles.

What is the minimum age to rent a car?

The minimum legal age to rent a car depends on the country where you’re renting. In the USA and Canada, drivers must typically be at least 21. However, some states and provinces allow drivers as young as 18 years old to rent a car. In Europe and Asia, the minimum age varies between 18 to 21 years old but some agencies might require drivers to be at least 25. Keep in mind that most agencies add daily fees for renters below 25 years old.

Can I return a rental car to a different location?

You want to pick up a car rental in one city and drop it off in another location? We can arrange that for you. When performing a car rental search on KAYAK, simply select the option "Different drop-off". You'll then be able to enter both your desired pick-up and drop-off locations. Most car rental agencies call this option a "one-way rental" and charge a return fee.

Can new drivers rent a car?

New driver policies vary for each car rental agency. While some require renters to hold a driver’s license for a minimum of 1 year, others only ask for a valid driver’s license for the duration of the rental period. We recommend new drivers to confirm the requirements directly with the rental agency.

Can I rent a car without a credit card?

Renting a car without a credit card is less common but not impossible. Many agencies allow debit card car rentals from airport locations as long as you provide proof of return travel. Be aware that the agency might run a credit check on you and will most likely place an authorized hold on your account as a security deposit. If you plan on paying with a debit card, it’s always a good idea to check the conditions with the rental agency before booking.

Can I drive cross country in a rental car?

In the USA, it's typically not an issue to drive across state lines or to cross the border to Canada. However, you'll most likely pay an extra insurance fee if you want to travel to Mexico. Similar rules apply to Europe, as you'll need to cover a cross-border fee if you want to cross from one country to another. Failing to do so will most likely invalidate your car rental insurance. Crossing borders in Africa and Asia is generally more difficult and additional border documentation is necessary. We recommend always informing the rental agency about your planned itinerary.

Is it cheaper to rent a car at the airport or off-site?

You will generally find the best deals if you select an off-site airport location. Airport car rental agencies offer a very convenient option for renters who want to pick up a car directly on-site. However, as demand is often higher, prices also tend to get slightly more expensive. Some off-site rental agencies offer shuttle service from the airport.

How to Find the Right International Travel Insurance Company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

Your needs for travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you're taking. You'll need to consider your destination and what you'll be doing there, either business, leisure, or adventure traveling. Policies covering adventure sports and activities will cost more. Longer, more expensive trips will also cost more.

Research the reputation of the company

When researching a company, you'll want to closely review the description of services. You'll want to see how claims are handled, any exceptions, and limitations.

You'll also want to look at the company's customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot, BBB, and Squaremouth, as this will provide insight on the quality of customer service and the claims process. You should also take note of whether companies respond to customer reviews.

Compare prices

You can get quotes through a company's website or travel insurance aggregators like InsureMyTrip and VisitorsCoverage. You'll need to be prepared to provide the following information about your trip:

  • Trip destination(s)
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age/birthday
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

For companies that offer travel medical insurance, you'll also want to play around with the deductible options, as they can affect your policy premium.

Understanding International Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the Best Price for International Travel Insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed International Travel Insurance Companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

International Travel Insurance FAQs

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

You should pay attention to any limitations regarding covered cancellations, pre-existing conditions, and adventure activities. For example, if you're worried you may have to cancel a trip for work reasons, ensure that you've worked at your company long enough to qualify for cancellation coverage, as that is a condition with some insurers. You should also see if your destination has any travel advisories, as that can affect your policy.

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

You should purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after making payment on your trip. This makes you eligible for add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR. It also mitigates the chance of any losses in the days leading up to your trip.

Aside from requiring a lot more gear, traveling with kids can be quite stressful, and in between packing your luggage and investing in a travel stroller , there's little mental energy for anything else. Fortunately, our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Parenting Lab have been testing car seats for decades, including the best convertible car seats , rotating car seats and the best booster seats . We test based on safety features, functionality, ease of use and value. Our picks are based on tests done in-Lab by our experts, evaluations from our consumer testers and extensive research.

Head to the end of this guide to find more information on how we test, whether or not you should use a car seat on a plane, what to look for when shopping for the best portable car seats and more. Looking for more to make traveling with kids as easy as possible? Check out our favorite outdoor-ready stroller wagons , the best lightweight strollers and top-rated double strollers .

The Doona car seat is our pick for the best overall car seat and stroller combo and it's one of our past Parenting Award winners. A dedicated fan following backs it up; see its more than 13,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. The Doona makes it easy to switch between car seat and stroller mode in seconds even with your baby strapped inside. In short, you don't need a separate infant car seat and a stroller, because this is both.

"It's the easiest stroller to maneuver through airport security and around an airport terminal," says one tester who's a mom of two young kids. It goes into a rideshare vehicle using the seat belt (no stroller to put in the trunk!). It's also FAA-approved for use in an airplane cabin and fits on most economy airplane seats, which are often about 17 inches wide.

Rachel Rothman , the Good Housekeeping Institute's former Chief Technologist and a mom of three, is a fan of this for travel. But it's important to note that, as well as being pricey, the Doona is only for rear-facing use and for toddlers up to 35 pounds. Toddlers outgrow it typically at age 2. But if you'll travel a lot in those first two years — even if it's just catching Ubers around town — you'll be grateful for the Doona.

Big kids need a bit of help ensuring that the seatbelt is hitting their body just right, so this backless booster gives them that extra height. It's also exceptionally small, lightweight and easy to travel with; you might even keep several in your car's trunk for when you're carpooling other kids.

Because it's backless, it doesn't offer as much support as a highback booster (for that, see the Peg Perego on this list). It is okayed for ages 4 and up as long as they weigh at least 40 pounds and could be great for a quick trip when you don't want to lug something large. This fits into a tote bag!

With its two hideaway cupholders, machine-washable seat cushions and padded armrests, this tucks a lot of features into a (really!) affordable seat. It's no surprise that it has more than 20,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. While it isn't airline approved — all booster seats require a shoulder belt, which you won't find on an airplane — its compact size makes it incredibly simple to slide into your overhead bin to later use in taxis, Ubers or other vehicles once you get to your destination.

For a little more money there's a TurboBooster LX version that works with LATCH; nice if you'll be keeping this in one car for a length of time.

Got enough to carry already? At 10 pounds, this is the best lightweight convertible car seat for traveling and it won't break the bank. Five harness heights and three buckle locations help customize the seat to your baby or toddler's size, though it's the kind of harness you have to rethread each time you need to change it.

The Scenera can be installed rear-facing for babies and toddlers and forward-facing for preschoolers up to 40 pounds but lacks the cushioning and other comforts, like a recline mechanism, we've come to enjoy in an everyday toddler car seat . Still, with its deep bucket seat, this will keep your tiny passenger comfy enough and car seat compliant when you're traveling and in and out of other people's vehicles. It's especially great as a rear-facing travel option for 2- and 3-year-olds who have outgrown an infant car seat.

You can remove both the cupholder and seat pad for washing. The seat pad can even go in the dryer. The brand claims that three of these seats fit across a back seat and our tests were able to validate that in certain vehicles. It can be installed with the LATCH system or a seatbelt. It's approved for airplane seats and like our best overall pick it fits on most economy seats.

Kids who are at least age 4 and who weigh 40 pounds or more will appreciate the comfort of this belt-positioning booster seat just as much as parents will appreciate its ability to fold down to a fraction of its size.

The Flex 120 has an exceptionally large weight range, functioning for kids up to — you guessed it — 120 pounds. While it's a bit pricier than some other booster options, its ability to compact down makes it perfect for folding up and storing in a bag that you can then gate-check, or even fit into the overhead bin while in-flight. Note that no belt-positioning booster is certified for use in an airplane cabin because they're meant to be used with a car's shoulder belt, not an airplane lap belt. The big kids who fit this are good to use the airplane belt anyway! This is perfect for use in a rideshare, taxi or a far-off relative's vehicle when you land.

Customize this booster to your child by adjusting the headrest, upper backrest, side wings and seat. In addition to being an easy portable car seat, this is another great choice for grandparents or other caregivers who only occasionally drive big kids around because it so easily fits into a car's trunk when not in use.

This is larger and heavier than any of our other choices. However, this is the most portable all-in-one car seat that grows with your little one from a rear-facing infant car seat to a backless booster, from 4 to 120 pounds .

Its versatility means that it may be the only car seat you ever have to buy, and if you travel infrequently, you could manage to tote this on a few trips and avoid buying something separate just for travel. It is certified to work on an airplane seat with the harness (so, up to 65 pounds), but it's about 3 inches wider than many economy airplane seats so the fit isn't great; one Reddit user said they put it in the window seat and then just accepted squeezing themselves into the middle-seat position.

While testing, we appreciated how easy this car seat was to install and use, making it pretty difficult to mess up due to user error. We also love how highly adjustable it is, with a six-position recline and a no-rethread harness with 10 possible heights. The easy-to-remove washable seat pads make it simple to clean up after your little one. If you're taking it with you into a rideshare and can't use the LATCH installation system, there's an integrated belt lock off on the back of the seat that helps make seat belt installation as simple as possible.

This is a pricey option that has a fan following with frequent travelers who travel with a preschooler. It folds down into its own carrying case, which can be worn as a backpack, so you can easily get it through the airport and store it in a hotel. It's got a five-point harness and is meant for kids up to 50 pounds. The brand says it's for kids as young as 2 but because rear-facing is safest and this only faces forward, we would not recommend using it for a child until they are at least age 3, preferably 4.

The Pico does not have side-impact protection and other safety features we want on an everyday car seat, but for travel we agree that this has portability appeal. It also gets knocked in reviews for not being comfortable for long car rides if your child likes to nap, but again, we're putting it on this list for on-the-go families who are in "something is better than nothing" mode, even for short train, bus or van rides.

Our experts appreciate how lightweight this seat is (8 pounds), and that it easily fits even on the smallest economy airplane seat (it's FAA-approved). The seat can either be installed using the LATCH system or the seatbelt in a car or airplane.

If you're a city family that doesn't even own a car, there's a big reason to love the PIPA portable infant car seat: It's built to be installed without a base and is exceptionally easy to move between vehicles, including rideshares like Uber.

It's got a built-in rigid LATCH system or alternatively you can use the back seat seatbelt. Plus, the PIPA urbn only weighs 7 pounds, making it one of the lightest infant car seats we know of and an easy one to carry from place to place. The stroller, too, is lightweight at just under 14 pounds and can be folded down using just one hand. The car seat is built to ride on top of the stroller, to get them both through an airport, and we named it our favorite lightweight travel system .

The infant car seat does not have a high weight limit, however. Your baby will outgrow it when they hit 22 pounds or are 29 inches tall, whichever comes first. For some that can mean by their first birthday. But the stroller will stay useful through the preschool years since it has a weight limit of 50 pounds. The car seat is airline-approved and will fit on most economy cabin seats.

How we test the best portable car seats

line break

The Good Housekeeping Institute's engineering and parenting pros have reviewed dozens of car seats over the past five years, including portable car seats . Our Lab experts work with parents to test these car seats on a variety of vehicles of different brands and sizes to ensure that you can find the right car seat for your family.

Each car seat we consider has passed Federal Safety Standards. We perform tests both in the Lab and at home to evaluate each product's safety, ease of installation, stability, ease of adjustments, stroller compatibility and portability. To accomplish this, we set up each car seat in a variety of vehicles and strollers. We evaluate how easy it is to secure the harness as well as how difficult it is to install the car seats. For portable car seats we pay special attention to whether they can be installed without a LATCH system and if they are approved for use in an airplane cabin.

What to look for when shopping for a portable car seat

linebreak

Whether you're going on a trip or often take your child places in a rideshare vehicle, if you need a portable car seat you should consider these things:

✔️ Height and weight limits : All car seats come with minimum and maximum height and weight specifications. To ensure proper seatbelt placement and optimal security, make sure your child fits within those ranges. Once they meet the maximum in either height or weight, it's time to switch. If you have an adjustable car seat that transitions to a booster look at the labels on the car seat, check the user manual or contact the manufacturer so you know when it's time to switch modes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can help you determine the right kind of car seat for your child based on their age, weight and height. That will help you figure out if you can use an infant car seat or if you need a convertible car seat and if you're ready to move on to a booster car seat for travel.

✔️ Weight : The lightest car seats are often the most portable. We get especially excited when we find any that are less than 15 pounds, though a few on our list are heavier than that.

✔️ Easy cleaning : Regardless of age, spills happen. Luckily, like many other car seats, most portable seats offer removable machine-washable seat covers and padding.

✔️ Design : Traditional car seats have a ton of padding, robust side-impact protection and extra features that are important for every day but might be overkill for short trips. The best design for a portable car seat is a slim, streamlined one.

✔️ Ease of installation : Since you will be re-installing the car seat each time you put it in a new car or aircraft, it's important to find a car seat that is so easy to install it won't take more than a few minutes. The easiest car seats for traveling can be installed without a car seat base.

✔️ State laws : Before you bring your car seat across state lines, check state laws to be sure you'll be compliant. Often children through age 7 must be in a child-restraint seat. But if you're heading to Florida for Disney World, the laws there only apply to children through age 5.

Should you bring a car seat on the plane?

linebreak

While it is not mandatory to strap your little one into a car seat on an airplane, many parents opt to do so since it can be both a safer and more comfortable for everyone . It's recommended to do so for children under age 2 by the FAA and AAP. Note: For your child to ride in a car seat, you'll need to buy them their own plane ticket so they're guaranteed to have the space. If your baby under age 2 is flying as a free "lap baby" you are not guaranteed space for your car seat.

Before you bring a car seat onboard, check that it has an FAA-approved sticker. It's also a good idea to bring along your car seat manual to help ensure that you're properly installing the seat on the aircraft. There are helpful videos on YouTube, too, that show how to buckle a car seat in with a lap belt. (This one from the FAA shows how to install a forward-facing car seat on a plane .) Watch some before your trip!

The average airline seat is about 17 inches wide and measures 30 inches from the back of the seat to the seat in front of you — but size can vary depending on which airline you are flying. Because of this, it's best to pick a narrow, compact car seat. Infant car seats fit better than most convertible car seats, though we find that the Cosco choice on our list generally fits well.

For those who are traveling with a car seat who don't plan to use it while on the plane, many airlines will check the car seat or booster seat for free at the check-in desk or at the gate. It might be a good idea to purchase a travel bag to fit it in, to help avoid damage.

How road trip insurance works

How to choose between road trip travel insurance companies, best plans for road trip travel insurance, other tips for road trip travel insurance, top cards with travel insurance for road trips, road trip travel insurance recapped.

There’s nothing quite like breezing down a highway with the windows down, the wind in your hair and a cooler full of sodas in the back seat. Whether you’re traveling alone or enjoying a road trip with friends or family, you’ll want to be sure that you’re covered with travel protections on your drive. This is as true whether you're embarking on a classic American road trip — like U.S. Route 66 — are or braving the roadways in a foreign country, in your own car or a rented vehicle.

Let’s take a look at road trip travel insurance, how it works and the best plans for auto travel insurance to suit your needs.

Road trips aren't immune to disruptions, and road trip insurance works similarly to travel insurance . Most plans require purchase before your trip begins and cover your prepaid expenses.

For rental cars

Not all third-party travel insurance policies automatically include coverage for a rental vehicle. Seek out plans that provide rental car insurance specifically — or book your car with a credit card that offers these specific protections .

Rental car travel insurance policies generally protect against damage to the rental vehicle only. Causes not within your control, such as collision, theft, vandalism, windstorm, fire, hail or flood damage are typically covered.

Because of the limited scope of rental car insurance, know that you may be on the hook if you’re liable for damage to other vehicles or if there’s bodily injury.

When picking up your rental car, you will likely be offered the insurance sold by the rental car company at the counter, typically called a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). You can decline this protection if you have sufficient coverage elsewhere (e.g., via a third-party policy or a credit card).

For your personal vehicle

Getting road trip insurance for your own vehicle isn't as common as travel insurance for rental cars , but it can still be a valuable consideration depending on your situation. For instance, access to roadside assistance can provide peace of mind if you are driving for long stretches in rural areas.

Finally, road tripping doesn’t end at driving a car. Other trip protections you may consider including in a travel insurance policy include medical evacuation, trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption coverage and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance . This is true whether you opt to drive your own vehicle or rent one for your trip.

With several travel insurance companies out there, it can be difficult to narrow down the one you really need. Before buying, always get quotes from multiple businesses.

This is because coverage levels and prices can vary dramatically. Insurance aggregators such as InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner) allow you to generate multiple quotes at once, plus they include filters for sorting so you can find the right policy for you.

Here are a few things to consider when looking for road trip insurance:

Whether you’re renting a car.

Where you're traveling.

Whether you already have car insurance.

What types of coverage you’re interested in.

If you’re also planning on flying, cruising or using a ferry.

How long you’ll be gone.

The cost of the plan.

To figure out the best road travel insurance, we combed a variety of insurance providers to check out their offerings.

Our quotes were built using a hypothetical 37-year-old from California taking a road trip throughout the United States. The total trip time was 15 days, and the total trip cost was $2,700. Here were the top contenders.
