Best Time to Visit Key West (Also When NOT to Go!)

Key West is a gorgeous, laid-back, and extraordinary seaside haven where the adventure never ends. With its spectacular sunset celebrations, crystal turquoise waters, and year-round sunshine, there’s actually not a bad time to visit the southernmost city in the continental US.

Furthermore, the city has a bevy of outdoor pursuits, indoor attractions, and restaurants to satisfy travelers of all stripes.

If, however, you’re searching for a specific kind of vacation, like water sports, festivals, or fishing, this travel guide will help you pick the best time to visit Key West.

After numerous visits, Key West & The Florida Keys have become one of our favorite places to visit in the USA. We’re excited you’re interested in visiting and look forward to helping you plan your trip!

Uncover the Best Time to Visit Key West, Florida

Table of Contents

First things first! Taking a vacation is an investment of your hard-earned money and the last thing you want is to risk a cancellation that ends with you losing that investment. This is one of the reasons  we never leave home without travel insurance.

This is especially important if you’re planning a trip to Key West during the fall season. Strong tropical storms or even a hurricane, can crop up really fast causing trip delays, cancellations, or if you’re already there, the need to leave sooner than you planned.

There are a lot of options out there for insurance, but we use and stand by  Allianz Travel Insurance . Full disclosure, we receive financial compensation as ambassadors for their company.

That said, we’ve been purchasing plans through them for the past 7 years and they have never let us down. Canceled flights, delayed flights, lost luggage, and a global pandemic, they’ve been there for us.

When people are standing at the counter fighting with the airlines over hotels or new flights, we don’t stress anymore because we know that we will be reimbursed for any out-of-pocket expenses caused by the delay.

We always renew their  AllTrips Premier  annual plan that covers all of our trips over a 12-month period. If you take more than 2 trips a year, it’s worth considering an annual plan.

For single trips, we recommend looking at their  OneTrip Prime  or  OneTrip Premier  plans.

Winter in Key West

The winter season runs from December to February and is, no doubt, the peak tourist season and the most popular time to visit Key West. We can’t blame vacationers for flocking to Key West in winter.

While the rest of the US is bleak and cold in winter, Key West enjoys warm and pleasant weather with an average high temperature that peaks at 74°F. Expect hotel room rates to skyrocket during these months though to coincide with peak season.

December in Key West

Sunset cruise in Key West Florida

With the holiday season coming to sunny Key West, expect cooler and breezier nights and warm days in December. Since the city is packed with tourists during this month, we recommend booking your accommodation and flights in advance before they’re all gone.

Don’t forget that most schools across the USA have 1-2 weeks off for Christmas and New Year breaks. This means many families head for warmer weather.

December temperatures in Key West

  • Average high: 76°F (24°C)
  • Average low: 67°F (19°C)

Key events and attractions

  • You’ll love the Key West City Home Holiday Parade. As you experience this jovial festivity, you’ll see a live Santa Claus, floats, and marching bands parading on Truman Avenue.
  • The Schooner Wharf Bar Lighted Boat Parade is a fantastic tradition in this city. Take a seat at an oceanfront bar or rent a boat to watch festive boats, holiday-inspired tall ships, and rowboats set sail around the harbor areas.

January in Key West

Fort Zachary Taylor Beach is one of the best beaches in Key West

Although the city never gets chilly, January is by far the coldest time of the year in Key West. It’s also the time of the year when people living in colder climates head to the Florida Keys to enjoy South Florida’s warmth.

Of course, hotels in Key West quickly fill up, and room and flight rates are higher during the city’s peak tourist season.

While December sees a lot of families, it’s the snowbirds and corporate adults seeking sunshine after the December holiday season. So you can expect a lively crowd, full beaches, and busy eateries.

  • Average high: 74°F (24°C)
  • Average low: 64°F (18°C)

February wraps up the busy peak season in Key West. Prices for hotel rooms and flights are still a little steep, but crowds tend to be thinner compared to December and January.

Spring in Key West

The spring season in Key West runs from March to May and it is truly the best time to visit Key West, especially if you’re traveling on a budget. Not only are the hotel rooms cheaper, but it’s less crowded. Plus, the weather is heavenly, making it an ideal time for water sports and other outdoor pursuits.

Worth noting, though, is that Key West is a popular destination for Spring break. You can expect it to be full of families and college students.

March in Key West

March is such a wondrous time to visit Key West. It’s the end of the city’s peak season, so prices for flights and hotels are a whole lot cheaper. Not to mention, the winter crowds have dissipated and the temperatures are still mild.

Personally, the last time we visited in March we didn’t care for it. The partying is intense with all the college kids around spring break. You can, however, offset this by staying outside of downtown Key West, like at The Perry Hotel.

March temperatures in Key West

  • Average high: 78°F (26°C)
  • Average low: 68°F (20°C)
  • For over 50 years, the Conch Shell Blowing Contest has been entertaining locals and visitors with its one-of-a-kind, friendly music competition.
  • Experience a ton of exhilarating water sports and underwater adventures in March, from snorkeling to banana boat rides.

April in Key West

April visitors will start to feel the switch to summer from spring. At the end of the month, temperatures will begin to rise in the 80s. Still, the nights are mild and cool, thanks to the breezes from the Gulf of Mexico.

April can be a real sweet spot for visiting Key West, and honestly, our favorite time to visit! The crowds are lower, the days are warm, sunny, and the evenings cool off enough to enjoy being out.

May in Key West

May, the last month of spring and the start of summer is pretty sunny and warm with temperatures jumping up the 80° range. That’s why we recommend packing a ton of sunblock and light clothing.

Prices for accommodations are still relatively low during this month. It’s also the last few weeks before schools let out for the summer. So you can enjoy some quiet times and island vibes in Key West during May still.

Summer in Key West

The summer season in Key West runs from June to August. Surprisingly, summer isn’t all sunshine and sandy fun in Key West. With frequent showers and hurricanes, summer may not be the best time to visit Key West for those who want to get a nice tan.

However, guess what? Summer attracts travelers with its ridiculously affordable room states. If you don’t mind the occasional showers, you’ll have a summer blast in Key West without breaking the bank.

June in Key West

June isn’t just the heart of Key West’s summer, but it’s also the beginning of its tropical storm season. Thunderstorms in the afternoons, sunny mornings, and tropical storms are quite common in June.

The weather is still warm meaning you need to bring an umbrella and wear light clothes.

September in Key West

September is a wondrous time to visit Key West. Sure, the hurricane season is still in full effect, but at least it has pleasant and refreshing breezes. Not to mention, the temperatures in the city begin to slightly cool down during the start of fall.

Did we mention that prices for flights and accommodations are cheaper as September is the shoulder season?

October is one of the busiest and most popular months to visit the city. The first two weeks are tranquil and ideal for a family-friendly or romantic retreat. At the end of October, the town turns into a party wonderland, thanks to the Fantasy Fest.

Normally, days are sunny in October, even though it’s the tail end of the hurricane season.

The hurricane season finally ends in November. With the winter season just right around the corner, the city island gets breezy and cooler again. If you’re traveling on a budget, however, November isn’t the best time to visit Key West.

The weather may be flawless, but prices for hotel rooms and flights start to surge during this time. Especially around the USA Thanksgiving holiday week. So keep that in mind if you plan to visit in November.

Alicia Keys Is Bringing the Fashion Heat for Her Summer Tour

By Christian Allaire

Alicia Keys Is Bringing the Fashion Heat for Her Summer Tour

Though for most of us the summer season is a time of rest, when you’re Alicia Keys, it’s the perfect moment to get to work, and kick off a brand-new tour. On Friday night, the singer began her Keys to the Summer Tour at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, the first in a string of stops over the next few weeks. “It’s the best show I’ve ever done,” Keys tells Vogue of the showcase. “Visually, musically, it’s a whole new world and level. I feel so excited—and the summer energy is amazing.” Along with performing some of her biggest hits, like “Fallin’” and “No One,” Keys is bringing the fashion heat with her stage wardrobe.

Working with stylist Anna Trevelyan, Keys wanted to tap into a new fashion mood for the tour, while still feeling authentically herself. “I have such an androgynous energy—it’s both masculine and feminine—and I really wanted to bring that energy to the forefront,” says Keys of her stage looks. “I wanted to bring a mixture. I love that it’s also very colorful and bright: It really captures my spirit and the summer.” Together, the pair landed on custom creations from labels such as Valentino, Pucci, GCDS, Monot, and Self-Portrait. “I love all of the different vibes of the designers,” says Keys. “I love that each [look] has its own personality; you can see that each designer thought specifically of me. I’m also wearing some pieces that haven’t even walked the runway yet!’

Fans got their first glimpse of Keys’s new ensembles at the Tampa show. Some of her favorites? “I love the Pucci [outfits]; I love that they’re very colorful, and how the fabric glows,” she says. (One look—with a cape, top, and pants—is made of reflective material.) Another highlight is the custom Valentino creation, also complete with a dramatic cape coat. “It feels quite elegant and chic,” says Keys. “I love the drama of the cape, and the beading. I have these stairs that I walk down, and the way that it falls down the stairs is so incredible.” Keys says that what she wears can meaningfully impact how she shows up before an audience. “I see fashion as performance,” she says. “Fashion is art—it’s a beautiful expression of who you are, and who you’re going to transform into.”

Given the star has only just kicked off her tour, she has plenty more fashion transformations to pull off over the next few weeks. She keeps up the momentum by grounding herself and looking after her wellbeing. “I stay sane during touring by making sure I’m having a great time and feeling good—making sure I’m getting rest and taking care of my health,” Keys says. “I also do things that are fun on my days off; it’s the summer, and I can go to the beach or by the pool. But I’m doing what I love, so even though it’s hectic, I’m loving what I’m doing.”

As for what fans can expect from her shows to come, Keys says, “I’m looking forward to continuing to shock people. People have never seen me do a show like this and they’re loving it—so I’m looking forward to continuing to give that energy.” She also can’t wait to hit certain cities along the way. “I’m looking forward to going to cities that I haven’t been to in a long time—New Orleans, Memphis,” she says. “There’s stops on this tour that I’m really looking forward to making magic at. It’s going to be epic.”

Below, a closer look at Keys’s new tour fashions.

Visit Key West During the Summer Months

July through the end of September do see some of hottest days of the year in Key West, but they’re still not too hot:

Average daytime highs:

  • July: 89 degrees F
  • August: 89 degrees F
  • September: 88 degrees F

Summer nights tend to be warm as well, with average nighttime lows of:

  • July: 80 degrees F
  • August: 79 degrees F
  • September: 79 degrees F

As for water temps, the highs in the summer range between 87 and 86 degrees F, not too much cooler than the air temperature!

Summer also sees the rise in the possibility of hurricanes; the peak of the hurricane season in Key West tends to run from August 15-October 15.

Florida is known for its humidity, but the drips aren’t as much of a problem in Key West, even in mid-July, due to the fact that it’s pretty much surrounded on all sides by water (the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean) and so benefits from cooling – and humidity zapping – sea breezes.

What’s more, Key West’s trees tend to bloom in summer and the aroma of the fragrant Frangipani tree is everywhere (the blossoms from the tree are used to make Hawaiian leis). The trees are beautiful with blooms in many colors – coral, hot pink, pale yellow, even white. In addition, Key West’s mango trees are heavy with the fruit – as well as the delightful citrus smell!

VisitKey West is the off-season. Which means fewer visitors – and better deals on restaurant meals, activities and hotel rooms!

  • The fun definitely doesn’t stop in Key West in the summer . For example, if you visit in late July you’ll want to be sure to take in Hemingway Days at the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. This festival celebrates the famous author and Key West homeowner/part-time resident with theatrical performances, fishing derbies, readings of his works, and even a look-alike contest.
  • If you can drive a bit back toward the coast of Florida along Hwy 1, consider taking in a snorkeling tour of the Key Largo coral reefs.
  • Take in a glassbottom tour aboard the Pride of Key West .
  • Be sure to check out the Key West PrideFest in June, which features a street fair, pool parties, a Pride parade, dance parties, comedy, films and sunset sails.

Event Information

New Orleans duo $uicideboy$ have announced the schedule for their renowned annual Grey Day Tour in 2024. Rap cousins Ruby da Cherry and $crim will embark on a 41-date arena and amphitheater tour across North America, kicking off in Nashville, TN, at Bridgestone Arena on August 7th. The highly-successful and largest Grey Day Tour to date will feature stops in Los Angeles at Crypto.com Arena, in Atlanta at State Farm Arena, in Chicago at United Center Arena, and will conclude in Lincoln, NE at Pinnacle Bank Arena on October 11th. $uicideboy$ will be performing at KeyBank Center on September 28. The opening acts for the tour include Denzel Curry, Pouya, HAARPER, Shakewell, and Ekkstacy. Below is the complete list of tour dates with supporting acts in each city.

Pre-sale tickets will be available starting tomorrow, April 4th, at 10 AM local time. General ticket sales will begin on Friday, April 5th, at 10 AM local time. Link to purchase both pre-sale and general on-sale is available HERE .

This year for Grey Day Tour 2024, $uicideboy$ have partnered with PLUS1 for something very near and dear to the group: mental health. $1 per ticket will go towards helping those that need it the most. Ruby da Cherry and $crim are very excited about this partnership, and this is only the beginning of their plans to give back to those that have given them so much.

Since its inception in 2019, the Grey Day Tour has emerged as a standout and one of the "absolute coolest" summer tours, uniting rap and hardcore genres, while also serving as a launching pad for the first national tours for many critically acclaimed artists as well as showcasing artists from their independent label G59 Records. According to Billboard , the Grey Day Tour has propelled the $uicideboy$ into the Top 20 rankings of highest-grossing hip-hop touring acts of all time.

Coinciding with the tour announcement, the group has revealed the lead track “Us Vs Them” from their eagerly awaited next full-length album, titled New World Depression , set to release on June 14. On "Us Vs Them," the $uicideboy$ delve into facing tough challenges and feeling disconnected from society. Ruby da Cherry and $crim deliver verses about coping with personal struggles and maintaining one's identity in a challenging world. The single has already been featured on official Spotify playlists, including New Music Friday US  and landing the cover Tirade and Alternative Hip-Hop. A link to stream the single is HERE .

Throughout New World Depression , the duo navigates themes of fame, self-destruction, and the relentless search for identity amidst chaos. Across the 13-track release, their raw, unfiltered lyrics serve as a gritty narrative of personal turmoil, substance abuse, and the struggle for authenticity in a world that often feels cold and indifferent. This album is an unapologetic exploration of the darker sides of human experience, resonating with anyone who has ever felt out of place or battled with their own shadows. The album will commemorate the 10th anniversary since the formation of $uicideboy$. Album pre-save is HERE .

Since forming a decade ago in 2014, the $uicideboy$ have prolifically shared their distinctive fusion of rap, punk, and trap with audiences worldwide. Starting out as pioneers of the SoundCloud Rap movement, they have gone on to deliver a tremendous amount of music and have achieved over 20 billion all-time streams, placing them in the Top 100 streaming artists of all time. In 2023, they were one of Spotify’s Top Groups of 2023 and one of SoundCloud’s Top 5 Most Streamed Artists .

1944 - Nominated To Run For Vice President

In 1944, the Democratic party leaders considered Vice President Henry Wallace too unpredictable to serve another term under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose health had visibly declined during the Second World War. The party then turned their attention to the U.S. Senator, Harry S. Truman from Missouri, who was nominated to be President Roosevelt’s running-mate for an unprecedented fourth term re-election.

Who was Harry S. Truman?

He was the 33rd President of the United States and served as Commander-in-Chief from 1945 to 1953. Truman was born in Missouri in 1884 and grew up in a family that often faced financial hardship. Despite his lack of formal education, Truman was a voracious reader, and he eventually went on to graduate from the University of Missouri in 1925. Prior to becoming President, Truman was a successful Missouri politician, serving as a county judge, US Senator, and Vice President under Roosevelt. Truman played a critical role in shaping the post-war world, including the establishment of the United Nations and the Marshall Plan for European recovery as well as supported several key initiatives, including the Fair Deal, which sought to promote civil rights, minimum wage laws, and labor protections. Harry S. Truman was an important president who helped shepherd America through a tumultuous period in its history. His legacy is notable for the significant domestic and foreign policy initiatives he implemented, as well as his dedication to service and his no-nonsense approach to politics.

What is Harry S. Truman best known for?

Harry S. Truman served as the 33rd president of the United States from 1945 to 1953. His presidency was marked by some of the most challenging times in American history, including the end of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War.

One of the most significant events of Truman’s presidency was the end of World War II. Truman made the call to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, ultimately leading to Japan’s surrender and the end of the war. While controversial, Truman argued that this decision saved American lives and was ultimately necessary to end the war quickly.

The Marshall Plan is another significant achievement of Truman’s presidency. It was designed to provide economic assistance to Western Europe, helping to rebuild after the devastation of World War II. The plan was a crucial part of America’s recovery and helped to maintain political stability across Europe. The Marshall Plan demonstrated Truman’s commitment to international leadership and set the stage for America’s continued involvement in global events.

The Truman Doctrine established that the United States would assist any country threatened by communist forces or ideology. The Truman Doctrine demonstrated Truman’s firm stance on communism, and his willingness to act when necessary to protect American interests.

Truman was also a vocal advocate for civil rights. He established a Presidential Committee on Civil Rights, which recommended significant reforms to address discrimination and racism in America. Truman also issued executive orders desegregating the military and federal agencies. Truman’s support for civil rights was a significant step forward for American society, and his efforts paved the way for the Civil Rights Movement in the following years.

After leaving office, Truman created the Truman Library and Museum to act as a repository of presidential papers and information about his presidency. The library contains over 15 million pages of documents, and it’s one of the most significant historical archives in the country. The Truman Library is a testament to Truman’s belief in the importance of preserving history and ensuring that future generations can learn from the past.

What was the Marshall Plan?

The Marshall Plan was a comprehensive plan to help rebuild the economies of Europe, which had been devastated by World War II. The plan was proposed by Secretary of State George Marshall in 1947 during President Truman’s presidency. The plan provided economic aid to 16 European countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany. The first meeting of the Marshall Plan’s European Advisory Commission held in 1947 was in Truman Little White House.

Did Harry S Truman live in Florida?

Yes! During his presidency, Harry S Truman spent 175 days in the Truman Little White House in Key West, Florida. This historic site was originally built in 1890 as the naval station’s command headquarters. It was later converted into a winter White House for President Truman and his family.

How many trips did President Truman make to the Little White House?

Truman made 12 visits to the Little White House throughout his presidency. Here is a record of his logs. Today, visitors can walk the same grounds that Truman did and gain insight into the challenges that he faced, both personally and politically.

How much time did Truman spend in Key West?

Between 1946 and 1952, Truman spent a total of 175 days residing and working at the Little White House. Step back into the era of Harry Truman and explore his personal belongings, including the living quarters where he and Bess resided, original furnishings, personal effects, and much more. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to see the rooms where Truman held meetings with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, worked on the Marshall Plan, and penned the Truman Doctrine.

What did Truman do in the Little White House?

The president had various duties during his stay, including attending to important state affairs and plowing through the numerous papers that piled up on his desk. It is said that he composed some of his most critical speeches in the living room of this house. During his time in Key West, the president spent time with family, friends, and advisors, but he also utilized the advanced communication system installed at the house to keep in touch with his top advisors in Washington.

Who lived in the Little White House?

Built in 1890, this beautiful structure was initially the command headquarters of the naval station during the Spanish-American War. It wasn’t until 1946 that it was converted into the winter residence of the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman.

Other well-known politicians and celebrities also made their way to Key West to visit the house. Among them were former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and even Harry Truman’s wife’s Uncle Eddie.

William Howard Taft, the 27th President of the United States, made use of the Little White House when he visited in 1912. He’d arrived to inspect the world-renowned Panama Canal, built during his presidency.

The Little White House was also used when President John F. Kennedy chose it as his Winter White House in 1961. Kennedy was looking for an escape to the Florida Keys. The president spent a whopping 45 days in the House before he had to attend to important matters in Washington.

What presidents have stayed at the Little White House?

President Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first to stay at the Little White House in 1932, and since then, many presidents have followed in his footsteps. President Dwight D. Eisenhower stayed at the Little White House in 1955 and 1956 during his terms in office. President John F. Kennedy visited in 1962. In the 1980s, Key West underwent a transformation and became a tourist destination, where President Jimmy Carter and President Bill Clinton sought relaxation.

Why did Truman say “the buck stops here”?

President Harry S. Truman became renowned for his declaration, “the buck stops here,” emphasizing the President’s responsibility to make final decisions on crucial national matters. Truman often mentioned the desk sign in public statements. He diligently worked daily at his desk in the living room of the Little White House, where the iconic “The Buck Stops Here” sign can be seen.

What did Thomas Edison do during WWI?

During World War I, Edison was asked to help the war effort by using his expertise to develop new technologies. He was appointed to the Naval Consulting Board and worked with the Navy to develop new weapons and technologies. One of Edison’s most notable contributions during WWI was the development of the Truman Little White House in Key West, Florida. This facility was used to develop and test new weapons and technologies for the Navy. Edison was also involved in the development of the first submarine detection system, which was used to detect enemy submarines.

Heading to the Florida Keys for a quick summer getaway? Here are 10 things to know

Summer vacation is coming up fast. And you might be thinking about a getaway to the Florida Keys.

Special events fill the calendar, giving day-trippers or longer-term visitors more to do than just a bar crawl along Duval Street. Whatever your plans, there’s always the glorious sunsets and the lazy days on the beach.

Here are some helpful things to know about the Florida Keys as you gear up for a spring or summer trip:

1. Upcoming events in the Florida Keys

Key West Pride: June 5-9, Celebrate Pride on a tropical island that is legendary for its laid-back style and its open and accepting atmosphere. For more information, go to gaykeywestfl.com/pride

Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce Dolphin Tournament: June 7-9, largest dolphin wins, so enter for $35,000 in cash and prizes. For registration or more information, go to lowerkeyschamber.com/product/27th-dolphin-tournament/

Hemingway Look-alike Contest: July 17-21 at Sloppy Joe’s in Key West, celebrates author Ernest Hemingway’s life in Key West. For more information, go to keywestlookalikes.com

2. The most notable beaches in the Keys

The Florida Keys aren’t known for the beaches. If you’re imagining an island paradise, you’re in luck. If you’re imagining an island paradise with miles of sandy beaches, you could be disappointed. There are only a few of those accessible by land.

Sombrero Beach: 200 36th St. on the ocean side in the Middle Keys city of Marathon. This is one of the Keys' best-kept secrets. It’s a picturesque sandy beach with crystal-clear shallow water. There’s also playgrounds, restroom facilities and picnic areas.

Anne’s Beach: Mile marker 73 in Lower Matecumbe Key in the Village of Islamorada. Not a traditional beach, but also a hidden treasure in the Keys. The beach has a boardwalk under a mangrove canopy. Instead of setting up a spot on the sand, beachgoers typically pitch their chairs in the shallow clear blue water and laze the day away. Restrooms are in the small parking lot, and picnic tables are on the boardwalk.

Bahia Honda State Park: 36850 Overseas Hwy. at mile marker 37 in Big Pine Key. Like Anne’s Beach, Bahia Honda is a palm tree-lined beach with clear turquoise water. But it’s a lot bigger, with three stretches of beach. Beachgoers can also rent kayaks and snorkeling gear.

Harry Harris Park: 50 E Beach Road, mile marker 92.5, in Tavernier in the Upper Keys between Key Largo and Islamorada. The oceanfront county park has a small, family friendly beach, playgrounds and picnic pavilions.

Curry Hammock State Park: 56200 Overseas Highway at mile marker 56.2 in Marathon. The park has a 1,200-foot-wide sandy beach, picnic facilities and a playground. It is a hot spot for kiteboarders and those who want to sit back on the sand and watch the high-flying action.

Clarence S. Higgs Memorial Beach: 1000 Atlantic Blvd. in Key West.

3. Are there tolls on the Overseas Highway?

No tolls: Traveling on the Overseas Highway is toll-free.

4. Are there tolls on Card Sound Road?

Toll: Card Sound Road, considered an alternate road to the Keys, has a $2 toll, taken electronically through SunPass, at the northern end of the bridge, a 65-foot high, 2,800-foot long span that crosses Card Sound. The cost for toll-by-plate is $3

Directions: Getting into the Keys using Card Sound Road, or County Road 905A, drivers take the highway southeast, over the bridge to a three-way stop sign. If you make a left, you’ll head to the ultra-exclusive gated community of Ocean Reef. Turn right on County Road 905 (without the “A”) and you’re on your way to Key Largo.

5. How long will it take to reach your Keys destination?

Traffic congestion in the Keys — especially during weekends, special events, spring break and the peak tourist season — can slow things considerably. Passing is allowed only in certain spots. Most of the Overseas Highway runs two lanes.

Here are some estimates for your trip:

Miami to Key Largo: The trip can take 2 1/2 hours.

Key Largo to Key West: The trip can take 2 1/2 hours.

Miami to Key West: It’s about a four-hour drive from Miami to Key West, and under three hours from Florida City to Key West without delays.

6. What to know about US 1 in the Florida Keys

Length: The highway runs 113 miles through the Keys over the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

Mile markers: Green mile marker signs are on the side of the road and are used for addresses and directions. The road begins and ends in Key West, where the mile marker zero signs are at Whitehead and Fleming streets.

Bridges: The longest span is the Seven Mile Bridge, which is actually 6.79 miles long. The second longest is the Long Key Bridge, at 2.3 miles.

7. How to monitor traffic to and from the Florida Keys

Two free apps can help you navigate the Overseas Highway. One is for traffic and the other is a guide to the Keys.

—The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has a namesake app that is a must-have for people who must take the road regularly. The app has a “live calls and traffic info” tab that gives the location and times of crashes or other traffic disruptions, such as when a medical helicopter is landing on the highway. You can also sign up for notifications, which will tell you when lanes are reopened. The sheriff’s office also posts about crashes in real time on its Facebook and Twitter feeds, which you can access through the app.

— A travel app from the Monroe County Tourist Development Council — The Florida Keys and Key West — features just about everything you want to know about exploring the islands. The app includes narrated driving tours — one for each direction of the highway — along with lists of hotels, restaurants, art galleries, watersports rentals and fishing guides. Information is categorized by location: Key West, the Lower Keys, Marathon, Islamorada and Key West. The app also has videos of the Keys, a map and weather forecasts.

Both apps are available through the Apple Store and Google Play.

8. What if you get seriously sick during your visit?

Monroe County has three hospitals, with one marking each major section of the island chain from Key Largo to Key West.

For major traumas, patients are airlifted by helicopter to medical centers in the Miami area.

Addresses and phone numbers for the hospitals are listed below, but if you have a medical emergency, call 911.

Lower Keys Medical Center: 5900 College Rd. Key West, 305-294-5531. Key West’s Lower Keys Medical Center has 167 beds spread over two locations. The main campus with an emergency room is on College Road on Stock Island. The hospital has 23 beds at its DePoo Medical Building, 1200 Kennedy Dr., where mental health and rehabilitation services are offered. The number at DePoo is 305-294-5535.

Fishermen’s Hospital: 3301 Overseas Hwy., Marathon, 305-434-1000. This hospital is in the Middle Keys city of Marathon and run by the nonprofit Baptist Health South Florida. The entirely new 33,330-square foot, 22-bed hospital opened last year after the original 1962-era hospital was severely damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017. Fishermen’s, which is now designed to withstand the wind speeds of a Category 5 hurricane, offers specialized services such as 24/7 emergency care with nine emergency department beds.

Mariners Hospital: 91500 Overseas Hwy., Tavernier, 305-434-3000 In the Upper Keys, Mariners Hospital is a 25-bed hospital run by Baptist Health South Florida. Mariners dates back to 1962. It’s home to the only hospital-based hyperbaric chamber in the Keys. It uses oxygen therapy to treat illnesses that include diving-related decompression sickness.

9. What about urgent care in the Keys or house or hotel visits?

Upper Keys Advanced Urgent Care of the Florida Keys: 100460 Overseas Hwy., mile marker 100.5, Key Largo, 305-294-0011 ext. 2. Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Middle Keys Advanced Urgent Care of the Florida Keys: 13365 Overseas Hwy., Suite 102, Marathon, 305-294-0011 ext. 3. Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. With three locations in the Keys, this center treats a range of health problems. The list includes colds and coughs, ear and eye infections, insect bites, minor burns, asthma, cuts, sprains, fractures and chest pain. They also offer various lab and diagnostic tests such as CT scans, ultrasounds and X-rays.

Lower Keys Advanced Urgent Care of the Florida Keys: 1980 N. Roosevelt Blvd. in Key West, 305-294-0011 ext .1. 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This urgent care center has three locations in the Keys.

Key West Urgent Care and Family Doctor: 1501 Government Rd. in Key West. Weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Saturdays and Sundays. 305-295-7550. Key West Urgent Care and Family Doctor offers medical care for minor accidents and procedures, along with treatment for colds, flu, sore throat, eye, ear and skin infections and headaches. They also offer lab draws and vaccines for tetanus and hepatitis B and flu shots, along with annual physicals and other primary care services.

Marquesa Medical: 305-504-5611, [email protected]. Amanda Tutlewski, a family nurse practitioner, says she opened Marquesa Medical to offer affordable and convenient healthcare for residents and visitors to the Keys. This practice only makes house calls. She keeps regular hours Monday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments after hours and on holidays may be available for an additional fee.

10. If you have a hangover in the Keys

Hydration therapy: If you’re sick from a hangover after overdoing it with booze on Duval Street, several places offer “hydration therapy.” This means an intravenous shot of fluids and vitamins. These aren’t emergency medical centers. They are run under the direction of a licensed physician.

In Key West, several businesses, including spas, offer various IV cocktails. Some are mobile and will come to you. Their services are also marketed for those smarting from sunburns, down with migraines or recovering from a marathon run. Prices and lengths of services vary. But expect to spend about $150, or possibly more, and at least 30 minutes for the hangover helper.

Hangover Hospital: 305-912-4911 Hangover Hospital’s IV menu includes hangover packages such as the Code Blue and the Lazarus, which promises to take you “from deathbed to remission in 45 minutes.” Call for appointments. They’ll come to you at no extra cost.

IVs in the Keys Key West: 531 Whitehead St., 305-395-8245. IV in the Keys describes itself as a modern wellness spa.

Summer Breeze Health and Hydration: 335 Duval St. Key West, 305-317-8595.

If you earn significantly more or less than your partner, how do you split payments for things like housing, food, household essentials, entertainment and holidays?

Do you both pay equally, do you split costs according to income, or do you have another method?

Get in touch with an outline of your situation in the  box above or:

Wetherspoons has revealed it is seeing soaring demand for Guinness among younger drinkers.

The Irish stout has become "fashionable" among younger generations, according to JD Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin, who has also seen a rise in ale sales.

Wetherspoons, which runs 809 pubs across the UK, said like-for-like sales increased 5.2% over the 13 weeks to 28 April compared with a year earlier, with total sales up 3.3%.

The company has now said it expects annual profits to be "towards the top of market expectations".

Toyota has warned it faces an impending drop in income after it was forced to cut down production to address a safety scandal.

The carmaker, which is the world's largest by sales, had a record net profit of 4.94trn yen (£25.5bn) in the year to March.

But earlier this year it became embroiled in a scandal after it emerged one of its subsidiaries had cheated on safety tests.

The Japanese government subsequently ordered the supplier, Daihatsu Motor Co, to halt production of its entire line-up.

Toyota has now warned net income will fall 27.8% this financial year to 3.57trn yen because of investments.

Morrisons has acquired 38 convenience stores and six fuel forecourts in the Channel Islands.

They are located on the islands of Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney.

The supermarket acquired the stores from its long-time partner SandpiperCI.

More than 500 employees from Sandpiper CI will be transferred across.

Underwhelming box office performances have signalled cinemagoers might be starting to tire of superhero films.

And now Disney has announced it will cut its output of Marvel content, moving to two television series and three films per year.

The company's chief executive, Bob Iger, said Disney would "reduce output and focus more on quality" particularly when it came to Marvel.

Some 33 Marvel films have been released since 2008, but recent releases such as The Marvels and the latest Ant-Man film have underperformed.

The Marvels was the lowest grossing film in the franchise's history, generating just £165m - less than its budget of £219m.

At the same time, Disney Plus revealed worse-than-expected subscriber numbers and a slowdown in its traditional broadcast television business.

Its shares dropped 8.5% in morning trading.

Brighton Palace Pier is introducing a £1 admission fee.

It has been implemented to cover the rising costs of maintaining, repairing and operating the 125-year-old structure, The Brighton Pier Group said.

The group said in the last five years the annual cost had risen to £11.6m.

The admission fee will come into force from 25 May and will apply weekends in June and then the whole of July and August.

It will not apply to locals or children under two.

Anne Ackord, chief executive of Brighton Palace Pier, said: "We have, to date, been able to offset and absorb these costs but we have now reached the point where, in our view, it is sensible to implement a small admission charge."

She said the fee would help the pier be "with us for generations to come".

Jaguar Land Rover is offering £150 a month towards the cost of insurance to help drivers cope with rising premiums.

The company announced the initiative will help those who own cars covered under its in-house insurance division that are registered between 1 May 2023 and 30 September 2023.

In order for it to apply, the vehicle cannot be worth more than £150,000.

If your car is eligible, Jaguar Land Rover has said it will make the contribution for up to three years.

It comes after the company launched Land Rover Insurance in October after reports suggested car thefts were pushing up the costs offered by mainstream providers.

"Customers of luxury cars and other luxury items are experiencing an increase in thefts due to organised criminal activity in the UK," a spokesperson said at the time.

"The desirability of our luxury vehicles, coupled with concerns around thefts, has recently led to challenges in obtaining insurance cover for some clients."

An airline entirely dedicated to dogs is arriving in the UK next month - but it will cost you more than £6,000 for you and your pet to enjoy it.

Bark Airlines will start by flying two routes - from London to New York and New York to LA. But it is hoping to add more to its roster soon.

During the flights, your pooch will be given free access to roam the plane and will be provided with treats, as well as a beverage of their choice during ascent and descent to help with the change in pressure.

On its website, Bark Airlines brags about being the first of its kind due to it being built "from the ground up" for dogs.

The experience is very high end, with a concierge greeting you and your dog before the flight, a free pass through security and only 10 people per flight.

The cabin also comes prepped with pheromones, music and lavender scented towels to help keep the beloved pets calm.

A "just in case" bag is provided too, filled with leashes, poo bags and snacks.

However, it comes with a hefty price tag of £6,400 for a one way ticket and under-18s are not allowed on board.

Money struggles are forcing more than half of new mothers to return to work earlier than planned, according to a survey.

Weekly statutory maternity pay and maternity allowance are now worth less than half the £400.40 minimum wage for a working week.

Maternity Action, which spoke to more than 1,000 new mothers, found 62% rely on credit cards or borrowing from friends when pregnant or on maternity leave.

Meanwhile, 59% have either returned or are planning to return to work earlier than preferred after the birth because of money worries.

At least one mother described how it would take "years" for her to recover financially from the cost of maternity leave.

Just 13% of women on maternity leave benefit from employers' occupational maternity pay schemes, down from 44% in 2008, according to government research.

Some are unable to claim statutory maternity pay due to self-employment.

Ros Bragg, director of Maternity Action, said: "The low levels of maternity pay and benefits come as a huge shock to many trying to start families.

"We've heard from women skipping meals, relying on food parcels and becoming anaemic because they can't buy healthy food."

The French capital is about to raise the cost of public transport - impacting any city-breakers or those heading to the Paris Olympics this summer.

Metro ticket prices will rise by more than 85% from 20 July, jumping from €2.15 (£1.85) for a single ticket to €4 (£3.43).

The price for a city bus ticket will double from €2.50 (£2.15) to €5 (£4.29).

It comes into force six days before the start of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and will remain in place until 8 September.

The price of transport passes will stay the same, meaning regular travellers such as residents should be unaffected.

To avoid the extra cost, you could buy a weekly travel pass.

These are priced at €30.75 (£26.39) for zones 1 to 5 while a Navigo Day Pass costs €8.65 (£7.42) to travel across two zones.

Tourists can also buy a Paris Pass which is aimed at people travelling for the Olympics and Paralympics.

The banking group has said some of its branches will close starting in September and continuing until May next year.

Job cuts will be in the fraud operations department of the bank, central operations and staff who work at the branches earmarked for closure.

After this round of closures, TSB will have 175 branches across the UK.

It announced earlier this year it would make cost-saving plans including cutting jobs and closing branches.

Trade union Unite said the decision by the UK high street lender was a "grave mistake".

"The decision to close a branch is never taken lightly, but our customers are now doing most of their banking digitally and we need to move to a better balance of digital and face-to-face services," a spokesperson for TSB said.

"We remain committed to a national branch network and through innovation and integration with video, telephone, digital, branch and other face-to-face services TSB customers have more ways to bank with us than ever before."

See the list of closures here ...

A new savings account is offering customers a rate of 5.2% AER - making it a market leader.

Raisin UK has partnered with Al Rayan Bank to offer the one-year Fixed-Term Deposit account.

Those who deposit £1,000 can expect to have £1,052.00 in their account by the end of the year.

The minimum deposit is £1,000, while the maximum is £85,000.

Customers will not be able to withdraw from the account for the year.

It is operated under Shariah principles, meaning interest cannot be earned but some of the profit the bank earns will be returned to you - meaning you can grow your savings without earning interest.

Anna Bowes, co-founder of Savings Champion , tells the Money blog...

"It's good to see that although the markets are expecting the base rate to fall in the near future, the anticipated date for this keeps being pushed back, and this seems to have stimulated a little bit of competition among some savings providers – in particular fixed-term bonds - pushing rates upwards.

"This latest increase from Al Rayan Bank, available both directly and via the Raisin UK cash platform, is exactly what we like to see, and hopefully it will create a little more competition from other providers - pushing rates further in the right direction."

Anna points out this rate can be beaten with shorter fixes but in that instance "you'll need to find another home for your money on maturity, so fixing for a bit longer could actually realise more of a return in the end".
