Detailed itinerary, day 1 : arrive at leh.

Day 2: Spend the day resting and exploring in Leh

We go through the two days permitting our bodies to adjust to the high-height and absorb the nearby culture. There is a bounty to keep you involved. We visit a portion of the religious communities in and around Leh, for example, the Shey, Thiksey, and Hemis. There is additionally the choice of visiting the old Leh Palace and the Khardung La Pass (world's most noteworthy motorable street at 18,400 ft). Leh additionally has a helpful market and you could do some very late shopping and get some apparatus for the trip. So go on and carry several accessories that will contain the memories of your visit to the beautiful paradise on Earth.

Day 3: Rest and Acclimatise in Leh

One more day to become accustomed to the low temperatures or to find the wonderful Leh! Aside from undertakings and strange views, Leh is notable for its religious communities and castles. Venture into the historical backdrop of Leh through the Shey Palace, Thiksey Monastery and ThikseyGompa. You can discover many experienced searchers or sightseers in Leh during the top season. Attempt to interface with everybody to become accustomed to the way of life. Leh is acclaimed for its bistros and hanging out spots. Aside from social legacy, Leh must be gone for its passes and lakes like Nubra valley, Pangong lake. We don't permit wandering of trekkers to such places. This is to maintain a strategic distance from strain on the body that may leap the procedure of acclimatization. In this way, attempt to abstain from moving to higher elevations and walk around close by places. Make the most of your awesome remaining lodging. Rest and rejuvenate your body and mind for a beautiful and adventurous trip that awaits you.

Day 4: Drive from Leh to Rumtse

At last, we will leave Leh and start our excursion by taking off. Today we drove for around 2 to 3 hours and camped at Rumtse, a little town on the Manali-Leh throughway. The town is barely shy of Tanglang La Pass, the second most noteworthy motorable street on the planet. Our campground is simply off the street, near town Gya and we have the entire day to unwind and permit our bodies to adapt. We would be going for a brief day climb outside the camp to get our muscles working. This will be like a warm-up exercise for the next tour.

Day 5: Drive from Rumtse to Tsokar

Pretty much, we leave civilization today as we proceed with our drive through the Tanglang La Pass, towards the excellent Tsokhar lake. It's a 3 to 4-hour drive to the lake and as we approach the lake, we can see Tsokhar town on the opposite side of the lake. Our vehicles would come back to Leh in the wake of dropping us off and our donkeys/ponies for the outing would go along with us later in the day. We will have a lot of time to take a long stroll along the shores of Tshokar lake. Absorb yourself in the natural beauty.

Day 6: Trek from Tsokar to Nuruchan

Today is a brief day, and we stroll for around four to five hours to reach Nurchan. Our campground is set beside a wonderful stream and we can see the extremely beautiful, saddle-formed pass that we would cross the next day. Witness the photo scenic stream with all the bounds and leaps of the water flowing beside you. Feel the cool water relaxing your body and mind. The journey takes around 4 to 5 hours.

Day 7: Trek from Nuruchan to Rajungkaru

The day begins with us crossing the tight stream, and afterward, we are on the path to traverse the first of four goes during the following three days. Today we simply need to arrange one pass, Horlam Kongka La (15,879 ft). It is a continuous rising to the top, which is set apart by the run of the mill Buddhist petition banners. One can even observe Tsokhar Lake from here. From the past, it has been a 90 minutes drop to the campground.

Day 8: Trek from Rajungkaru to Gyama Burma

This is the hardest day of the trek as we would traverse two passes, the two of which are more than 16,404 ft. First up is Kyamayuri La (17,192 ft), which is obvious from Rajungkaru, and is another ideal seat. The perspectives from the highest point of the pass are stunning and thinking back we can see the whole valley spread out underneath us. A long and continuous drop is trailed by a move to the following pass, the Gyama Burma La (17,093 ft). When we arrive at the top, we have an agony staking one and a half hour plummet to the beautiful campground at Gyama Burma, which is just about noticeable as a small spot from the pass.

Day 9: Trek from Gyama Burma to Korzok Phu

Contrasted with the earlier day, it is a shorter day. We traverse the last go of the excursion, the Yalegon La (17,195 ft). Similarly, as we start the drop, the Tso-Moriri lake becomes visible and it is a splendid sight, infertile mountains, snow-clad pinnacles, and the lake, all in a solitary edge. It is a long and hard two to three hours plunge, as we drop around 2,625 ft right to our campground at Karzok Phu, the exchanging focus of the Changpas.

Day 10: Trek from Korzok Phu to Korzok; Drive to Leh

It's an hours stroll to Korzok, you abruptly end up on the banks of Tso-Morori Lake. Visit the Korzok religious community and in the wake of having taken our fill of photos of the lake we drive 6hrs to Leh. Rest the night in the hotel and rejuvenate yourself for the next day ahead.

I was bored with my regular 9 to 5 schedule and then I decided to seclude myself from the chaotic city life. So, I went to Brahmatal trek last month along with a couple of my friends. We went with Trekmunk and it was a lovely experience. The trek guide, Ramesh was very polite and helpful. The food and snacks were amazing. The activities in the campsite during our overnight stay is something that I am gonna cherish my entire life. I am waiting for my next trek with Trekmunk.

Traveling with these people is surely an insanely enthralling experience. This is my second backpacking trip with these people and the way I had imagined backpacking to be has been fulfilled by them and they have given me surely more. The best thing about travelling with these people is that you understand the true meaning of travelling and experience it very closely. You are given great freedom but at the same time taking care of. You participate in the process of backpacking. You have a trip leader with you but he acts more like a friend as the days pass by! We attended the hornbill festival and did a wonderful trek to Dzukuo valley in Nagaland with the leadership of this group. You break the boundaries of yourself when you travel like a true traveller and that is possible with these people.

I had an amazing trek with Trekmunk to Sandakphu November and December 2019. From the first moment of inquiry about the trek and all my questions were answered clearly and on time thanks to Dheeraj who managed to facilitate the trek quite well with his communication. Our guide Arpan was very experienced, calm, patient and very helpful to each trekker's needs in the group. He facilitated to find and hire a porter for me once I needed one although we were in the middle of the trail. He also arranged emergency transportation when I had to cut the trek and go back home for an urgent matter. I really enjoyed their service and I would like to repeat the same trek or try other treks with them again.

I had the most wonderful experience trekking through the ranges of Chandrashila with Trekmunk. The small moments of achievement were phenomenal. Chandrashila is the most astonishing peak that I've ever trekked through; I've never been so fascinated. I think I am going to go for another trek with Trekmunk soon enough! The kind of hospitality that is provided to us is worth appreciating. I made many new friends and have enjoyed each and every day of this trek to its fullest.

I and my friends went to Markha Valley trek with Trekmunk and we all had a great time. Walking up and down the hill, coming across some beautiful sites was mesmerizing. Staying in tents was so much fun. And our guide had all the knowledge about the trek. Trekmunk is really good with its food and accommodation facilities. I highly recommend Trekmunk. Kudos to their Team.

Explore Ladakh’s remote Rupshu district, home of nomadic tribes, hidden forts, high passes and majestic yak. This area was first opened to foreigners in 1989, and has seen very little outside influence since that time. Over the course of 23 days, our trek takes us through deserted villages, wild desert scenery much like the American Southwest, and vast grasslands where herdsmen graze their yak.

With the easing of restrictions in the eastern part of Leh, it is now possible to visit the great wilderness around the lake of TSO Moriri in Rupshu southeast of Leh and to glimpse Tibet from the shores of Lake Pangong in the far east of Ladakh. Far more relaxing and inviting are the new trekking possibilities offered near these lakes.

Rupshu Valley Trekking - 23 Days

Rupshu Valley Trekking

Rupshu Valley trekking is a high-altitude desert that lies southeast of Leh, Ladakh. Explore Ladakh's remote Rupshu district, home of nomadic tribes, hidden forts, high passes and majestic yak.

Day 1: Delhi Arrival in Delhi and transfer to Domestic airport for flight to to Leh. Day 2: Delhi-Leh Leh Sightseeing- After breakfast sightseeing of Leh city. Day 3: Leh Sightseeing tour of Spitok and Phyang Gompas. Day 4: Leh Tour of Shey and Matho Gompas and Stok Palace, the home of Ladakhi royalty. Day 5: Tour of Tikse and Hemis Gompas, two of the wealthiest and most influential institutions in Ladakh. Camp at Hemis. Day 6: Hemis-Chogdo Trek from Hemis to the village of Chogdo. Day 7: Chogdo-Kongmaru La Trek to Kongmaru La base camp. Day 8: Kongmaru La-Kang Yatze Peak Over Kongmaru La (16,730 ft.) to the plain of Nimaling, then over a small ridge to the secluded base camp at the foot of majestic Kang Yatze peak (21,000 ft.). Day 9: Kang Yatze Peak Day at leisure or perhaps climb an adjacent ridge for a closer view of Kang Yatze's summit. Day 10: Kang Yatze Peak-Langtang Chu Over Konka Wangpo (16,500 ft.) to the valley of Langtang Chu. Day 11: Langtang Chu-Sokra Climb to the top of Zalung Karpo la (16,570 ft.) for a bird's-eye view of the Kharnak region before descending to the lovely meadow of Sokra. Day 12: Sokra-Kharnak Pass through Kharnak, with its imposing fort looming over; enter a spectacular gorge leading further down into willow groves. When the valley widens again, one will reach one of the most auspicious spots in the region, the site of a massive and remarkably ornamented monument. Overnight camp. Day 13: Kharnak-Dat A short day. After one hour's walk, one will reach the semi-permanent settlement of Dat and camp near the village. The village and its small Gelugpa Gompa merit an afternoon's exploration. Day 14: Dat-Lungmoche On the vast open plain beyond Dat, keep a close lookout for herds of Kyiang, the Tibetan wild Ass, seen frequently in this valley. The stream has dried up here, but bubbling springs provide refreshment before the climb to Yarla (15,910 ft.). This is an easy pass, but the views are incredible. From the pass, there is a simple descent to Lungmoche. Day 15: Lungmoche-Zhabuk The scenery changes yet again as one passes two small ridges and descend through grotesquely wind-carved rocks to one of the most beautiful campsites in Ladakh, called Zhabuk. Day 16: Zhabuk-Zara Chu (river) Be prepared for some exciting river crossings before climbing high above the Zara Chu (river) and leave it behind for good. Day 17: Zara Chu (river)-Marang la Make an early start to tackle the highest pass on our journey, 17,390 ft, Marang la. The views from the summit stretch to the Great Himalayas. The descent is quite long, and one ends up in a lovely willow grove on the bank of the mighty Tsarap Chu, leaving the icy heights far behind. Day 18: Marang la-Darcha It's a short walk to the Manali-Leh road, where one can get jeeps that will take one to Manali. This spectacular drive takes adventurers over the main Himalayan range at the 15,255 ft Baralacha la before stopping for the night in Darcha. Day 19: Darcha-Manali Continue by jeep over Rohtang Pass (3,978 metres) to Manali. Day 20: Day free in Manali. Day 21: Manali-Pinjore Drive to to Pinjore, check into a hotel for an overnight stay. Day 22: Pinjore-Chandigarh A short jeep ride to Chandigarh, then the Express train to Delhi, on arrival check into a hotel for an overnight stay. Day 23: Departure Delhi and transfer to airport for catching a flight to onward journey.

Rupshu is a high-altitude plateau in Ladakh lying south of river Indus and is the westernmost part of the larger Changthang plateau which extends far inside Tibet and is inhabited by nomadic pastoralists called the Changpas. This region is characterized by rolling hills dotted with white sheep and small clusters of nomadic tents near the freshwater sources. The whole area springs to life for about 4 months of the year in the summer when the nomads seem too busy with their activities. This region has huge saltwater lakes like Tsokar & Tso-Moriri which act as homes to birds like Bar Headed Geese & Black Necked Crane in the Summers. We start the trek from Tshokar Lake and finish at Tso-Moriri after crossing a series of high passes, a couple of them being above 5000m. Since the entire trek lies in this high-altitude plateau acclimatization becomes very crucial and we spend the first 4 days just acclimatizing to the thin air. The pleasures of doing this trek are different as it offers a unique feeling – the freedom of roaming over a vast expanse of rolling hills and lofty valleys.

Is this trek for me?

The Rumtse-Tsomoriri trek is considered to be a challenging trek, due to the high altitude, cold weather, and rugged terrain that hikers can expect to encounter. The trek is usually classified as a moderate to difficult level trek. The trek involves climbing high passes and crossing glaciers, which can be physically demanding. The altitude of the trek ranges from 4,300 meters to 5,300 meters above sea level, so hikers should be prepared for the effects of altitude sickness, such as headaches, fatigue, and difficulty breathing. It is also important to note that the trek requires a good level of fitness, as it involves a lot of hiking and climbing over steep and uneven terrain. Trekkers will be trekking for around 6-8 hours a day, and carrying their own backpacks. To sum up, while the Rumtse-Tsomoriri trek is a rewarding and beautiful trek, it is not recommended for the first-time trekkers or those who are not in good physical shape. It is important to be well-prepared, both physically and mentally, before undertaking the trek.

Guidelines Do’s & Don'ts

Rupshu is a vast area to the south east of Ladakh, on the road from Manali to Leh. The valley lies at an altitude of 4,000 to 5,000 meters. Cultivation is difficult because of the extremely cold and dry climate, though there is ample grazing land. The small population is thus widely spread and consists mainly of nomadic shepherds, called Changpas . The Changpas also engage in trade and work the caravans between Ladakh, Lahoul and Spiti.

The trek commences from the Indus valley, goes over the Kangmaru la into the Nimaling plains, over the Zalung Karpo la towards the Rupshu Valley. Following the Kurna Chu through the beautiful Sorra gorge, the trail goes over two more passes before ending on the banks of Tso Morari or mountain lake, situated in the middle of the elevated district of Rupsu. The lake is formed by a tributary of the Spiti river. The lakes name is characteristic of its situation nestled in the midst of 20,000 foot plus peaks which completely shut the lake in. Legend has it that a woman riding a yak was carried into the lake. At first the yak swam boldly out and the woman ( chomo ) was delighted. But after a while the animal grew tired and sank deeper in the water. The chomo became frightened and screamed Ri Ri, Ri Ri until the yak sank and she drowned. Since then, the lake has been called Chomo-riri.

The area is rich in wildlife including the kyang (wild ass), red fox and the rare, highly endangered snow leopard. Black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese flock to the lakeside for breeding during the summer months. Tso Kar is another brackish lake and this whole region has supported a vital salt industry that allowed the Changpas to trade with merchants from the other regions of Ladakh.

Rupshu Trek

Destination, duration (in days), accommodation, 90000/- per person.

featured-Rupshu-Trek

The Rupshu Valley is a high-altitude desert that lies southeast of Leh. Rupshu is actually a western extension of the Tibetan Plateau. Previously closed to visitors, this region now reveals some of the most amazing scenic panoramas that are found in Ladakh. An abode of different sects of the Indo – Tibetans that reflects from cloister to cloister, a terrain that changes its colour at every turn, and a cascade of mountains that is captured from high altitude passes, Rupshu valley perks you to discover a potpourri of culture and nature. Further, the region is dissected by numerous mountain ridges that can be traversed by a number of ancient trading routes, making the Ruphsu trek one of the moderate to challenging treks in the Ladakh region. While on this trek, one venture into a wilderness where only a few nomads live, totally reliant on their yak and sheep herds for their subsistence.

Rupshu has majestic sweeping deserts that are separated by narrow ranges with lofty passes offering distant views, and a wide-ranging nomadic people called Changpas. Throughout the Rupshu trek, one can still reveal the yore days truth when traders from Lahaul once drove their caravans of sturdy mules across Rupshu and travelled into western Tibet. Nonetheless, within the Rupshu Valley, which is spread beneath the mighty peaks of the Ladakh and Zanskar mountains, are several large crystalline lakes including Tsomoriri and Pangong.

The Rupshu valley trek commences from Hemis at 3,505 meters, which is approximately 40 kilometres by road from Leh. From Hemis the Rupshu trek heads via Martselang to Shang Sumdo, which is at an elevation of 3,850 meters and thereafter ascends to Latza Kongmaru at 4,800 meters. One can expect the steep and strenuous climb from Shang Sumdo to Latza Kongmaru. The trek from Latza Kongmaru leads to Kongmaru La, which is one of the high altitude mountain passes at an altitude of 5,030 meters and continues to descend to Langtang Chu at 4,250 meters. The journey thereafter heads to Yakrupal at 4,700 meters and from there it turns to Zalung Karpo La, another high altitude mountain pass that has an altitude of 5,200 meters approximately. From Zalung Karpo La the trek descends to Sorra at 4,200 meters and further whirls to Dat at 4,200 meters. From Dat, the Rupshu trek turns to Lungmo Che at 4,010 meters via Yar La at 5,000 meters and thereafter snakes to Lun at 4,100 meters and embarks upon a completely different landscape. From Lun the trek continues to ascend to Marang La at 5,300 meters and thereafter descends to Takh. From Takh the Rupshu valley trekking finally concludes at Manali, which is at an elevation of 2,050 meters.

Rupshu Trek

Rupshu Valley Trekking

The Rupshu Valley lies amidst the Zanskar and the eastern Tibetan border to bring the highest and the unexplored peaks of Ladakh. Geographically, being the most alluring part of the Changthang plains, the Rupshu valley extends towards 1000 kms east of the Tibetan ranges. Trekking across this range will be comprised of great network of high valleys, separated by impressive ridges and snow capped peaks gliding across the altitude of 6000 meters. This could be the most challenging to moderate kind of expelling around the rugged land towards Leh, the area is being cheerfully acquired by the nomadic tribe known as Chang-pa. The area of Rupshu Valley can be blissfully coveted by the trekkers to visualize the region’s oldest monasteries including the Hemis Monastery and the Rupshu monastery along with driving across the highest road pass the Khardung La at the height of 17,384 ft.

Between the best seasons of July to September the trekkers can get astonished with the major highlights of the famous Rupshu Valley trek to include:

  • Majestic natural views
  • Stunning meadow campsites
  • Isolated ancient villages
  • The impressive nomadic culture of Chang-pa

A beautiful trek through a less-frequented area of Ladakh, this route follows the same trail as on the Markha trek for the first 3 days, before entering the high plateau of Changthang, which stretches far into Tibet. The only inhabitants of this desolate wilderness, where the climate is so extreme that you can get sunburn and frostbite at the same time, are nomadic and semi-nomadic people, who live in tiny settlements with their yak, sheep, pashmina goats and a small harvest of barley on which they survive.

Early morning transfer to Domestic Airport to connect the flight for Leh. Upon arrival at Leh Airport our representative would assist you at the Airport and transfer to Hotel. Check in to the hotel. Post breakfast rest of the day for rest for acclimatization. Later in the afternoon a walk around Leh town (3500mtr) includes a visit to Leh Market, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa & Leh Gompa - This walk shall help us in a getting acclimatized at this height. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Shang Sumdo, Ladakh

We will leave Leh by jeep to the starting point of the trek at Martselang (3600 m). Along the way, we will visit the first Palace of Ladakh at Shey, following the famous Yellow Sect monastery of Thikse, which houses one of the largest Buddha statues in Ladakh (called the future Buddha). We will then visit Hemis, the largest and most famous Drukpa monastery in Ladakh (built in the early 17th century). After the tour, we will drive to Martselang, where we will meet our crew. Martselang is the entry point into Hemis National Park, where we might get glimpses of such endangered high-altitude animals such as the snow leopard, Tibetan wolf, Tibetan sheep and Golden eagle. From there, we will walk for 2 ½ hours to the small village of Shang Sumdo (3700 m).

Day 04 : Shang Sumdo 3700 m. - Lartsa 4600 m.(6 hrs)

Today we will climb steadily through the gorge of Shang, enjoying the magnificent colors and rock formations on view. We will then pass through the small village of Chogdo (4000 m) and cross a few rivers before reaching camp for the night.

Day 05 : Lartsa 4600 m. - Thachungtse 4250 m via Kongmaru La 5200 m. (6-7 hrs)

A steep ascent leads us up to Kongmaru La (5200 m). From the pass we will get a breathtaking view of the north face of Kangyatse (6400 m), Zanskar and the Karakoram ranges. We then descend gradually to the summer pasture of Nimaling, where the villagers from Marka valley spend the summer with their sheep, goats and yaks, which graze on this lush greenery. The campsite of Thachungtse is further down the valley on the bank of the Marka River at 4000 m.

Day 06 : Thachungtse - Yakrupal (5-6 hours)

After yesterday's strenuous walk, today is easier as we walk through the remote Langthang valley, where few other trekkers go. It's only the villagers from Markha, who use this valley as a pasture ground for their animals. From Thachungtse, we will follow the valley down until it divides, cross the river and follow the valley to the left along the Langthang Chu River. The valley down to the right leads to Markha. The Langthang River has a tendency to rise during the day due to the melting of snow in the mountains, and by noon it becomes a dangerous river to cross. An early start in the morning is therefore essential, as one has to cross the river several times. Yakrupal is a nice, green campsite where both the horses and we will have a good meal.

Zalung Karpo La, Ladakh

After Yakrupal, we will continue up the valley towards the pass of Zalung Karpo La. From the top of the pass there is a spectacular view of the Zanskar range on one side, while on the other, the highest plateau in the world appears: the Chang Tang plateau stretching far into Tibet, known as the land of the nomads. The trail down is steep and several river crossings will follow to the beautiful and lush campsite of Khar, which will be our home for tonight. Kharnak means "black castle" in Ladakhi, and, situated on a hill above the campsite, one can imagine the former palace of Khar where the king of Kharnak used to live. The ruins of this former kingdom still stand, and the nomads believe it to be haunted. It is said that the nomads in Dat are descendants of the people who lived in Khar and that they for some reason moved to Dat three or four generations ago.

Day 08 : Khar - Dat (5-6 hours

A relatively easy day and a beautiful walk through wide, lush valleys (by Ladakhi standards!). At Tangtse Sumdo the valley divides - the left valley leading to Dat and the right into Zanskar, by the 'Zhunglam trek', where one will get one's feet real wet due to the 80 river crossings! On the way we pass several nomad camps before reaching the tiny village of Dat, a settlement of stone huts and the winter headquarters for the nomads in Kharnak. Here they live from October to December and March to June. The nomads of Kharnak are a colorful and joyful people moving together with their yaks and pashmina goats. In Dat there is also a Monastery, and when the villagers are away from Dat, one or two people ride back on horses every second day to light the candle here.

Day 09 : Dat - Yar La 4950m - Lungmo Che (5-6 hours)

From Dat we enter the vast land of the Changthang plateau and follow a long, wide valley before taking one of the side valleys towards Yar La. In spring the nomads move with all their animals towards Zara and it can be an unforgettable sight to see 30-40 families moving with their yaks in caravans. It is an easy ascent to this pass. From here it is a short walk down to the pastures of Lungmo Che, where we will spend the night, surrounded by snowcapped mountains, grazing yaks and pastel light.

Day 10 : Lungmo Che - Zara (5 hours)

The trail follows rolling hills towards Yagang, another settlement of stone huts belonging to the Kharnak nomads. A jeep road continues to Zara, the summer headquarters for the nomads in Kharnak. If you go for a visit up here, you will most likely be welcomed with numerous cups of butter tea and probably be invited into the nomads' black tents woven out of yak hair.

Day 11 : Zara - Leh (5 hours)

It will feel sad to leave this fascinating world, but it is time to return to Leh. From Zara the drive takes us back over the Taklangla pass, the second highest pass in the world.

Day 12: Leh Sightseeing

Today we proceed for Indus Valley monastery tour. We start with a visit to Shey, the ancient capital of Ladakh. The monastery here has a huge gold-gilded statue of Buddha Sakyamuni with a large silver lamp burning in front of the statue. Then we visit Thiksey Gompa, an impressive complex rising tier upon tier on a hill above the village. The monastery has a beautiful 30 m high gold-plated statue of Maitreya Buddha, the Buddha of the future. Drive further to visit the famous Hemis Gompa, founded in 1630's by Stag-tsang-ras-pa under the royal patronage of Sengge Namgyall. Hemis is one of the largest and richest gompas of Ladakh. The two-day festival of monastic dance in June-July has raised the reputation of Hemis particularly high. The festival is dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava, popularly known as second Buddha and responsible for spreading Buddhism in the Tibetan world. Later we visit the Stok Palace, the Royal residence of the King of Stok & the Museum that has a rich collection of Ancient Ladakhi artefacts including old Thangkas, precious stones, arms and armoury, the Queen's necklace and the crown of the King of Ladakh among others. Rupshu -kharnak trek.

DAY 01: LEH TO SHANG VIA MARTSELANG (2-3 HOURS)

Drive by jeep to the starting point of the trek at Martselang (3600 m). Along the way, we will visit Shey, the first capital town of Ladakh and then further the famous yellow sect monastery of Thiksey, which houses one of the largest Buddha statue in Ladakh (called the Maitreya-future Buddha). We will then visit Hemis, the largest and most famous Drukpa monastery in Ladakh (built in the early 17th century). After the tour, we will drive to Martselang, where we will meet our crew. Martselang is the entry point into Hemis National Park , where we might get glimpses of such endangered high-altitude animals such as the snow leopard, Tibetan wolf, Tibetan sheep and Golden eagle. From here, we will walk for 2 hours to the small village of Shang (3700 m). and camp here for the night.

DAY 02: SHANG 3700 M. - LARTSA 4600 M.(6 HRS)

Today we will climb steadily through the gorge of Shang, enjoying the magnificent colors and rock formations on view. We will then pass through the small village of Chogdo (4000 m) and cross a few rivers before reaching camp for the night.

DAY 03: LARTSA 4600 M.

DAY 04: PONGANAGU - NURUCHAN 4300 M (6 HRS)

After yesterday's strenuous walk, today is easier as we walk through the remote Langthang valley, where few other trekkers go. It's only the villagers from Markha, who use this valley as a pasture ground for their animals. From Thachungtse, you will follow the valley down until it divides, cross the river and follow the valley to the left along the Langthang Chu River . The valley down to the right leads to Markha. The Langthang River has a tendency to rise during the day due to the melting of snow in the mountains, and by noon it becomes a dangerous river to cross. An early start in the morning is therefore essential, as one has to cross the river several times. Yakrupal is a nice, green campsite where both the pony as well as we will have a good time.

DAY 05: YAKRUPAL - ZALUNG KARPO LA 5200M - KHAR (5-6 HOURS)

After Yakrupal, we will continue up the valley towards the pass of Zalung Karpo La. From the top of the pass there is a spectacular view of the Zanskar range on one side, while on the other, the highest plateau in the world appears: the Chang Tang plateau stretching far into Tibet , known as the land of the nomads.

DAY 06: KHAR - DAT (5-6 HOURS )

A relatively easy day and a beautiful walk through wide, lush valleys (by Ladakhi standards!). At Tangtse Sumdo the valley divides - the left valley leading to Dat and the right into Zanskar, by the 'Zhunglam trek', where one will get one's feet real wet due to the 80 river crossings! On the way we pass several nomad camps before reaching the tiny village of Dat , a settlement of stone huts and the winter headquarters for the nomads in Kharnak. Here they live from October to December and March to June. The nomads of Kharnak are a colorful and joyful people moving together with their yaks and pashmina goats. In Dat there is also a Monastery, and when the villagers are away from Dat, one or two people ride back on horses every second day to light the candle here.

DAY 07: DAT - YAR LA 4950M - LUNGMO CHE (5-6 HOURS)

From Dat we enter the vast land of the Changthang plateau and follow a long, wide valley before taking one of the side valleys towards Yar La. In spring the nomads move with all their animals towards Zara and it can be an unforgettable sight to see 30-40 families moving with their yaks in caravans. It is an easy ascent to this pass. From here it is a short walk down to the pastures of Lungmo Che, where we will spend the night, surrounded by snowcapped mountains, grazing yaks and pastel light.

DAY 08: LUNGMO CHE - ZARA (4-5 HOURS)

The trail follows rolling hills towards Yagang, another settlement of stone huts belonging to the Kharnak nomads. A jeep road continues to Zara, the summer headquarters for the nomads in Kharnak. If you go for a visit up here, you will most likely be welcomed with numerous cups of butter tea and probably be invited into the nomads' black tents woven out of yak hair.

DAY 09: ZARA - LEH (5 HOURS)

After a fascinating trek and attached to this trails and mountains you will feel sad to leave this mesmerizing world, but it is time to return to Leh. From Zara you will drive back to Leh over the Taklangla pass, the second highest pass in this region.

Duration: eight days  Level: difficult  Best time to go: mid-January to mid-February  Highest Altitude: 11,123 feet  Starting point: Chilling

The Chadar Trek, also known as the frozen river trek, is undertaken on the iced-over waters of the Zanskar River in Ladakh. In its frozen state, the river itself is called ‘Chadar,’ which translates to blanket in Hindi. During the winter months, the road to Zanskar Valley is closed due to heavy snowfall and avalanches. The only remaining overland route is to walk across the Chadar. The frozen river is used as a route to reach Leh. The trek starts from the village of Chilling, about 37 miles west of Leh. It is an arduous one, with travelers having to walk about nine miles per day. In peak winter, the temperature drops to -20 to -30 degrees during the day, which is ideal for a successful trek as a large portion of the water remains frozen.
