How to get around Las Vegas

Taking a walk along the Strip is a Vegas thing to do. The entire 4.2 miles length of the Las Vegas Strip is pedestrian-friendly, with footbridges at all the main intersections. Both sides of the Strip are lined with hotels and casinos, shops, restaurants, and lots of attractions.

However before you embark on your sightseeing walking tour of the Vegas Strip, it helps to have a rough idea of how long it will take you to walk from one resort to another.

Las Vegas Walking Map (Interactive)

The Las Vegas Strip walking map below will help you to visualize the route we’re discussing in this article. the walking map is interactive and you can zoom in and scroll around to see more detail.

The walk starts at the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign on the south end of the Vegas Strip (very bottom of the map) and heads north.

Even though the walking map route starts at one end of the Strip, you can begin your walking journey on Las Vegas Boulevard from wherever you want. Just pick a spot and go from there.

Also, don’t think you need to complete the walk in one day as that would be difficult to do while still getting to enjoy everything. I’d recommend checking out one section on foot at a time. Alright, let’s go!

(Note: I’ve also provided approximate walking distances from one stop to the next in the article below.)

The iconic Welcome to Las Vegas signs marks the start of your free walking tour and the unofficial marker of the southern end of the famous Las Vegas Strip. The sign shines from the median at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard, and it has stood here since 1959.

As an employee of Western Neon, Betty Willis designed the 25-foot-tall sign with its classic horizontal star design border of flashing yellow stars.

The sign is such a Vegas landmark that in 2013, the State Historic Preservation for the State of Nevada announced that the sign had been added to the State Registrar of Historic Places.

The “logo” of Vegas itself, the sign presents a perfect photo opportunity for visitors and tourists to pose beneath the world-renowned welcome sign.

A Note About Walking Distances on The Las Vegas Strip

While the total walking distance of the Las Vegas Strip may only be 4.2 miles or so end to end, by the time you’ve stopped and walked through all the various properties and attractions along the way you will have walked probably close to ten times that distance!

The hotels and casinos on the Strip are gigantic properties and you will likely find yourself walking a number of miles while exploring a single property.

In addition, the distances between hotels and casinos can prove deceptive. For instance, when looking at a map, the Luxor and Caesars Palace may look quite close together, but in truth, the two properties are almost two miles apart.

It will take approximately 37 minutes to cover that distance if you’re not stopping for any reason.

Of course, stopping to check stuff out and have fun is the whole reason you’re visiting Vegas in the first place. So covering that distance may take you all day.

Las Vegas Strip Map

So my advice to you is to pace yourself. The great thing about the Strip walking tour I’ve laid out above is that you can break it down into sections. You can cover the section of the Strip that you’re up for that day and leave the rest for another time.

In addition, you can begin your walk at any point along Las Vegas Boulevard and use this guide to visit the places nearby that you’re interested in.

Las Vegas Strip Walking Tips

Whether you choose to walk the entire Las Vegas Strip or just catch a rideshare to the area you want to be in, you will likely be doing more walking than you do in your normal day-to-day life. In addition, Las Vegas can present some walking challenges that you might not have to deal with at home.

Below, I’ve laid out some Las Vegas Strip walking tips that should prove beneficial:

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes – I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen ladies hobbling up and down the Strip while wearing high-heal shoes or guys trying to walk miles in flip-flops. Save the high-heels for the clubs and the flip-flops for the pools. Be sure to pack a pair of comfortable and broken-in walking shoes for walking along Las Vegas Blvd.
  • When it’s hot, walk at night – I shouldn’t have to tell you it can get really hot in Las Vegas for a good chunk of the year. While you may be expecting the hot weather, until you’ve experienced it yourself you can’t possibly know what it’s like. Daytime temperatures from 100°F to 115°F (38°C to 46°C) are not uncommon. If you’re wanting to walk the Strip when the weather is like this, do it at night. While nighttime temperatures are still very hot, at least you’re not in the sun.
  • Drink plenty of water – Whether it’s hot outside or not always try to stay hydrated when you’re walking in Vegas. The air in Las Vegas is extremely dry compared to just about any other place on the planet. So even if it’s on the cool side you will want to be drinking water. This goes double if you’ve been drinking adult beverages during your outing! Also, here are some ways to keep your skin moisturized while in Vegas.
  • Wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen – The sun here is intense. That’s true even when the weather’s cool outside. It can be 60°F outside, and you can still get a wicked sunburn if you’re not careful. A hat, sunglasses, and a liberal application of sunscreen should be a requirement if you plan on spending much time walking along the Strip.

4 Ways to Avoid Some Walking in Las Vegas

If this much walking sounds exhausting to you, take heart. There are ways to get around Las Vegas without a car that can cut out a significant portion of the walking.

  • Hop on Hop Off Bus – The Hop on Hop Off Bus is an open-top, double-decker bus that runs up and down the Strip and to downtown. The bus will stop at or near most of the destinations on the walking tour guide without you having to walk the in-between sections. You can purchase a ticket for the day and hop off the bus wherever you want and jump back on again when you’re ready.
  • Duece Bus – Alternatively, you can ride the Deuce (city bus) up and down the Strip for a very low cost. There are many stops along the Strip and into downtown that are sure to help save your feet.
  • Uber & Lyft – There are plenty of available and affordable (usually) rideshare services in Las Vegas. Find out how much Uber and Lyft cost in Las Vegas .
  • Fly Over The Strip – Finally, if you’re not into walking at all or just want an amazing tour of the Strip from above, you can book a Las Vegas Strip sunset helicopter tour .

Final Thoughts

Taking a self-guided walking tour of the Las Vegas Strip is something every visitor to Vegas should do. Use the information in this guide and the Vegas Strip walking map in this article to plan your adventure.

Be sure to bring comfortable shoes, and enjoy the experience. After all, you only live once, and Las Vegas is the town to live it up!

Free Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour Map Fremont Street

Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour:

Location :  Downtown Las Vegas ( Fremont Street ) Cost :  Free, Self-Guided ( Optional Costs Listed Below ) Start :  Main Street Station Casino End :  The Mob Museum Distance :  1 Mile Time Required :  30 Minutes of Walking ( with stops 1-12 around 4 hours; +90 for Mob Museum; +90 minutes for Neon Museum; + 30 minutes for Mormon Fort ) Fun Scale :  9 out of 10

If you want to get a feel for Old Las Vegas and the and the real roots of the city, you need to head Downtown to Fremont Street.  Under a canopy of modern LED lights, you can still feel the charm and excitement of Vegas’ early day entertainment.  From gambling, drinking, free concerts, hidden historic artifacts, and a mob museum, our self-guided Downtown Las Vegas walking tour map will help make sure you don’t miss a thing on Fremont Street.

Historical Overview Of Downtown Vegas:

There had been Native American tribes in the Las Vegas Valley for thousands of years, but it wasn’t until John Charles Fremont arrived in 1844 that Las Vegas ( Spanish for The Meadows ) was officially on the map.  Fremont not only charted important trails crisscrossing the American West, but also helped reroute the Old Spanish Trail ( established 1829 ) from Santa Fe to Los Angles near an oasis located in today’s Downtown Las Vegas.  Fremont’s mapmaking, the booming California Gold Rush, and the snow-free Western trail through town helped Downtown Las Vegas grow.

With the railroad arriving in 1905, development along Fremont Street straight out from the train station formed Downtown Las Vegas.  The city’s oldest casino ( the Golden Gate from 1906 ) still stands on Fremont Street, but many other things have changed.  Fremont Street became home to many other firsts in Vegas over the years including the 1st phone in 1907, the 1st paved road in 1925, later the 1st traffic light, and city’s 1st neon light at the Overland Hotel in 1928.

There was a bit of a Speakeasy era in Vegas as gambling was outlawed from 1909-1931 ( drinking 1920-1933 ).  Pressure from The Great Depression and an influx of workers building the Hoover Dam ( 1931-1935, originally called Boulder Dam ) forced them to open gambling back up with the first official Nevada gaming license going to Fremont Street’s Northern Club.  With gambling legal again, Fremont Street boomed through mobster influence although the casinos were mainly dingy sawdust-floored Western-themed establishments.

Finally, Downtown started classing up when the Horseshoe became the first casino to get carpeting and new hotels like Binions pushed the limits to bring in more high rollers.  Fremont Street turned into a sea of dizzying neon marquees nicknamed the Glitter Glutch by the 1940s and started adding large casino complexes by the 1950s.  As the only place in America with statewide gambling from 1931-1979, Downtown Las Vegas became a magnet for Hollywood celebrities looking to escape California.

Today the highlights of Downtown Las Vegas still center on Fremont Street with its mixture of vintage touches and modern technological features.  Visitors looking for flares of Americana and old world Vegas will love the historic neon signage, free nightly concerts, cheap drinks, loose slots, and a compact feel of Fremont Street.  Seekers of more modern flair will enjoy not only the zip line that cuts right through Downtown, but also the Fremont Street Experience which is by far Downtown’s main highlight.

About Main Street Station : The railroad-themed Main Station Casino and Brewery serves as a living museum of Casino antiques in the hotel lobby, main gambling flooring, and even outside.  The antiques can be seen 24 hours a day and the front desk has a really handy self-guided maps showing where each one is and explaining it.  By far the coolest artifact in the Main Station is in the men’s bathroom where the urinals are mounted to an actual section of the  Berlin Wall !  The 12-foot-tall Berlin was was 91 miles long and separated Communist East Berlin from West Berlin during the Cold War from 1961 through 1989.

Other antiques include red granite outdoor street lamps which were made in 1870 and sat in Brussels, Belgium until WW1.  Inside the casino, the main chandelier from the Figaro Opera House in Paris, France .and the ones in the Garden Court Buffet were made in the 1850’s for the San Francisco Opera House.  The main gambling room looks like an old Victorian-Era railway station with exceptional stained glass and brass chandeliers from the 1800s.  The carved Mahogany woodwork in on the hotel’s reception desk was originally the inside of a drugstore in Covington, Kentucky over 100 years ago.  Of the same era, the bronze doors and windows at the entrance to the Player’s Club was once the facade of the Kuwait Royal Bank in London, England.  If you search around the second floor there is a large vintage pool table which was used in the hit 1961 movie The Hustler.

The train and railway theme throughout the hotel is very predominate as you follow the walking tour and these elements are best seen in the Pullman rooms.  The Pullman family owned one of the railway car manufacturing companies in the country in the early-1900s.  The massive wooden doors from their Illinois mansion led the way to the Pullman Grille.  The grille feature a fireplace from a castle in Scotland and a complete railway car once owned by  Little Women   author Louisa May Alcott which you can go inside.  The Main Street Station was also once home to the private railway car used by  Buffalo Bill Cody  and Annie Oakley to travel the country in Buffalo Bill’s Old West Show from 1906 to 1917.  Unfortunately, the Buffalo Bill Car was removed in 2017 for the development of a neighboring tower the rest of the antiques at the casino make it worth a stop.

2. Fremont Street Experience :

Free Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour Map Fremont Street Experience Light Show

About The Fremont Street Experience : The intersection of Fremont Street and Main Street is where Las Vegas was first founded in 1905 and is now the marks the beginning of the Fremont Street Experience.  At the foot of this crossroads is the  Plaza Hotel  ( website ), known as the poor man’s casino.  Even if you are not a penny pincher, head to the top of the domed viewing platform before entering the Experience to get a great elevated view down Fremont Street.

It was here at the Plaza Hotel ( formerly Union Plaza ) where the original  Las Vegas train station  ( Salt Lake Depot ) opened in 1905 to service the Clark Line ( later bought by Union Pacific ).  This route connected Salt Lake City to Los Angles and cut the transportation down to just one day, which was a big feat for the time.  This train traffic led to the founding of Las Vegas, the development of Fremont Street ( paved in 1925 ), and all of the entertainment in Sin City.  While an influx of people was visiting Las Vegas during the construction of the Hoover Dam ( 1931-35 ) the ban on gambling ( 1909-1931 ) and drinking ( 1920-1933 ) were lifted which led to a business boom.  By 1940s Fremont Street was a sea of Neon Lights and Fremont became nicknamed the  Glitter Gulch.

The full Fremont Street Experience is seven blocks long but you’re sure to be drawn to the 4-block-long, 90-foot-wide canopy over the street filled with 12.5 million colored LED bulbs called  Viva Vision .  The entire area really comes to life on the top of every hour from 8pm to 1am when Viva Vision turns into a full-on light and video show synced to music on a concert quality sound system.  The light shows themselves are a reason to put Downtown Vegas on your to-do list, but stay a little longer and you’ll find a lot more to love.

3. Golden Gate Casino :

Free Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour Map Fremont Street - Golden Gate Casino

About The Golden Gate Casino :  Founded in 1906, the Golden Gate is the oldest casino in Vegas and where it all got started.  As the railroad began to cut through Las Vegas from Salt Lake City to Los Angles, John F Miller started a hotel inside a canvas tent here ( across from the train station ) between 1903-05.  The following year Miller was done with a permanent structure known as the Hotel Nevada ( later the Hotel Sal Sagev ).

In 1907 the first phone in Las Vegas was installed in the busy Hotel Nevada.  Because gambling was made illegal in Nevada in 1909 along with drinking in 1920, the casino had to run underground until the bans were lifted in 1931 and 1933 respectively.  The name was changed to the Golden Gate in 1955 in honor of a group of investors from Oakland California who fronted the money for a large casino expansion in the hotel.

Today the bars are the main attraction at the Golden Gate Casino as they are where Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr drank during the Rat Pack days.  The quality of bartending is just as good today as it was then as the current staff has over 100 bartending championship trophies between them.  An insider tip is that you can get Golden Gate’s renowned, and huge, shrimp cocktails for just $3.99 if you sign up for their free Players Club Card.

About The Vintage Neon Signs :  Make sure to check out the huge  Vegas Vic Cowboy and Vegas Vickie neon signs sitting at Fremont Street’s first covered intersection which are our favorite vintage signs.  The iconic waving Cowboy Vic was added to the Pioneer Club ( 1942-1995 ) in 1951 and his cowgirl partner Vegas Vickie was added to the Glitter Glutch Strip Club ( 1980-2016 ) when it opened in 1980.  Vickie is sometimes incorrectly called Sassy Sally after a strip club that sat next door from 1981 until 1999.

When the Freemont Experience was opened in 1995,  Vic and Vickie were married in a formal ceremony covered by the local newspapers and news stations.  Vickie was removed for restoration in 2017 with plans to bring her back to Fremont Street soon.

Vegas has become known for its dizzying displays of neon lights since the first one was installed at the Oasis Café on Fremont Street in 1929.  This movement helped Downtown Las Vegas become a destination known as the Glitter Gluch and the signs have become an attraction of their own.  More vintage neon signs can be seen later on this Downtown Las Vegas walking tour at Fremont Street East as well as the popular Neon Museum.

6. Binion’s Gambling Hall :

Free Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour Map Fremont Street Binions Gambling Hall

About Binion’s Gambling Hall :  Texas cowboy Benny Binion opened this Casino in 1951 in an effort to class up the neighborhood.  Although it seems outdated now, in its heyday the casino was considered the poshest place to be and forced all the surrounding joints to upgrade.  Binions innovated in other ways than just style when they helped the  World Series of Poker  get off the ground by frequently hosting it at the casino.  This move into televised poker earned Binion’s Gambling Hall ( formerly Binion’s Horseshoe ) the nickname “The Place That Made Poker Famous”.

Binions is also home of the  Million Dollar Photo  ( website ), which is the best photo op in Las Vegas!!  In the Casino’s Player’s Club, you can have your photo taken with the Binions girls and a stack of ONE MILLION DOLLARS in cash!  The huge pile of money is made up of 34,400 $20 bills and 42,000 $1 bills.  The Million Dollar Photo has actually been an attraction at the casino going back to the 1950s and from 1964-1998 the stack was made up of 100 $10,000 bills.  Although the photo opt is free, you are only allowed to go to the Player’s Club if you are 21+ and it is open from 9am-11:30pm.

7. Fremont Casino :

Free Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour Map Fremont Street Casino Drinks

About The Fremont Casino :  This was one of casino mogul Sam Boyd’s first properties and has some of the best food and drink deals around.  When it opened in 1956 over the site of the former Masonic Temple Opera House ( 1908-1912 ), the Fremont Casino was the tallest building in Nevada.  In 1959 Wayne Newton got his start in Las Vegas at the Fremont in its Carnival Lounge.  This was also one of four casinos ( the only one Downtown ) run by Frank Rosenthal for the mob from Chicago in the 1970s.  Rosenthal’s notorious career ( 1968-1982 ) in Vegas inspired Martin Scorsese’s famous 1995 movie Casino starring Robert De Niro.

Tourists and locals both love the amazing drink specials at the Fremont Casino’s bars including  $1.99 Margaritas .  The food specials are awesome too with a $15.99 prime rib dinner served with a baked potato and buffet on Sunday, Monday, and Thursdays from 4-10pm.  On Wednesdays and Saturdays, they have the same amazing deal but with steak instead of prime rib.  If you are looking for accommodations the Fremont Casino has very nice rooms starting under $40 a night when booked online and more basic rooms as low as $29 a night.

In front of the Four Queens Casino is the main stage for the free Downtown Rocks concert series from May through September each year run by the Fremont Experience.  The hotel isn’t the nicest, but they have clean basic rooms as low as $23 on weekdays and $48 on weekends.

9. The “ D ” Casino :

Free Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour Map Fremont Street - The D Casino Best Hotel Rooms

About The D Casino :  This property was formerly called Fitzgerald’s Casino which was considered to be one of the luckiest casinos in Vegas.  Fitzgerald’s was Irish themed with shamrocks and a leprechaun.  Keeping the charm alive, The D Casino even has a large stone from Blarney Castle in Ireland on display which you can kiss for good luck.  Maybe the coolest gambling here is the oval multi-player Sigma Derby slot machine which is a vintage horse racing game that is fun even if you don’t win.

If you are considering staying on Fremont during your visit, The D is the nicest place to stay in Downtown Las Vegas by a mile.  The modern hotel rooms are posh and very hip yet still offers an excellent value even though it is a little more to stay here than the other basic hotels Downtown.  Even if you aren’t staying at The D, very we love their Long Bar ( it’s very long ) and the VUE Bar where you are able to go upstairs and get great views of Fremont Street .  In case you were wondering the name D stands for Downtown, Derek ( the owner is Derek Stevens ), and Detriot ( Derek ‘s hometown ).

11. Heart Attack Grill :

Free Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour Map Fremont Street - Heart Attack Grill Burger Nurses Best Restaurant

About The Heart Attack Grill :  The main attraction of the Neonopolis Mall is the highly entertaining Heart Attack Grill.  Known for their greasy food and costumed nurse waitresses that will spank you in front of the other guests if you don’t finish your meal, the Heart Attack Grill is truly unique.

Claiming to be fighting anorexia since 2005, you eat for free if you are over 350 pounds and the restaurant’s spokesman really did die of a heart attack.  The milkshakes are very rich at the Heart Attack Grill and all of the food is cooked in lard.  Their Quadruple Bypass Burger was ranked by the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most calories in a burger with 9983.  Since then, the Heart Attack Grill has gone even bigger with the Octuplet Burger.  This monster has 8 patties ( 4 pounds of meat ) between layers of chili and 40 pieces of bacon.  If you can eat the entire Octuplet Burger you get paraded out by the nurses in a wheelchair when you leave, but if you fail to finish you get spanked on the butt with a paddle.

Putting the Heart Attack Grill’s hospital theme over the are jello shots served in syringes and wine dripped from hanging bags like they are IVs.  They even give your entire group hospital gowns to wear while you eat.  While the Heart Attack Grill may be the least healthy restaurant you will ever visit, remember that you are in Sin City, a place where being a gluten and overindulging are fully acceptable.  We heard the calories you eat in Vegas stay in Vegas…

Also part of the Neonopolis Mall, we really love the axe, knife, and spear throwing at Ax Hole ( website ).  Fairly new to the mall is the thrilling  Fear the Walking Dead Experience ( website ) which is part maze and part interactive game.  The shopping at Neonopolis Mall isn’t anything special, but there are two really good Premium Outlet Malls ( website ) in Las Vegas with many high-end shops you won’t find in most outlet malls.  One is nearby and connected to Downtown by bus and the other is near the bus depot on the way to the airport.  There is also a really famous World’s Largest Souvenir Shop ( website ) just to the south of here at the intersection of Las Vegas Blvd and Sahara Ave,

12. Fremont East District :

Free Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour Map Fremont Street - Fremont East District Neon Signs

About The Fremont East District :  This far eastern end of Fremont Street is a great place to see what the original Downtown Las Vegas area looked like more than 50 years ago.  While the other end of street saw its businesses grow into tall towers in the 1950s then covers with the LED canopy in 1995, Fremont East is like an untouched time capsule .

Many visitors in search of the real Old Vegas like to gamble at Fremont East’s  El Cortez Casino which was built in 1941 and is one of the only properties that hasn’t had a significant renovation since 1952.  New York mobster Bugsy Siegel bought El Cortez in 1945, but the city refused him an expansion permit because of his ties to organized crime.  This denial led to Siegel ( murdered in 1947 ) investing in the development of the Flamingo Casino on the Las Vegas Strip which is outside the city limits.  The move also let the mobster know that Downtown Las Vegas wanted to be a little more respectable.

We love the cluster of vintage neon signs in Fremont East.  These historic neon signs include a retro Vegas sign, Oscar’s Martini Glass, the Hacienda Horse and Rider, the Red Slipper, a Showgirl, and a 30-foot-tall can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer.  A majority of the signs were originally built by built by Yesco ( Young Electric Sign Company, a famous Vegas sign-making company ) and you can see a ton more at the Neon Museum & Boneyard later on this Downtown Las Vegas walking tour.

13. The Mob Museum :

Free Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour Map Fremont Street - The Mob Museum

About The Mob Museum :  Amazing 3 story museum highlight the artifacts, culture, and history of notorious gangster life from the early years of Las Vegas.  One of the most famous mobsters was Bugsy Siegel, who was the primary force driving the development of Las Vegas as both gambling and booze became illegal in most of the United States.  Mobsters like Bugsy wanted to create an escape from prohibition with glitzy luxury hotels, restaurants, shows and adult indulgences they couldn’t get anywhere else.  The Mob’s influence shaped the city’s earliest development and played a role in its ultimate evolution as the Entertainment Capital of the World.  The Mob Museum does a great objective job of telling both sides of each story they tell whether it’s of rival gangs or both the mobsters and police.

One of the highlights of the museum is the actual  Valentine’s Day Massacre Wall , moved here from Chicago, where Al Capone had members of his rival North Street Irish Gang executed in 1929.  Bugs Moran was the leader of the North Street Irish Gang and had been trying to take Capone and his South Side Italian Gang out for years.  The two groups had run-ins and assassination attempts on each other all over the country but the events of February 14th, 1929 are the most famous.

Capone and his friend Jack “Machine Gun” McGurn came up with a plan to wipe out Moran’s entire gang.  The two men had a 3rd party set up a whiskey sale, but when Moran’s gang showed up they were greeted by the cops.  This wasn’t an uncommon thing to happen so when the cops asked the men to turn around a face the wall for questioning they did.  Unknown to Moran’s gang, the cops where actually imposters in a stolen squad car and unloaded their guns on the gangsters once they turned their backs.  The fake cops pretending to be arrested two of their cohorts when they left in case anyone was watching so they could make their getaway.

When the smoke cleared Bugs Moran wasn’t among the dead, because he had been running late and was scared off by the cop car as he was pulling in.  Although Moran lived, Capone had struck a fatal blow to the North Street Irish Gang.  The company who owned the warehouse through the bullet hole filled wall was bad luck and had it tore down, but a Chicagoland businessman snatched up the bricks in hopes of displaying the wall in a future restaurant he planned on building.  The restaurant never came to be and when the businessman died the bricks found a new home and were re-assembled in the Las Vegas Mob Museum.

Beyond St. Valentine’s Massacre Wall there are hours of activities to keep you entertained at the Mob Museum.  The activities are so wide-ranging that you definitely won’t get bored.  We love shooting the  replica Tommy Gun  and they also have some great exhibits highlighting which mobsters were connected to different Vegas Casinos and another interactive one where you can listen to the  actual wiretaps  the U.S. Government used to bust the Mob operations.  With its great exhibits, The Mob Museum has gained the title National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement.

In addition to the excellent museum, they also have a Crime Lab Experience where you get to hands-on in a crime laboratory. You will explore the work of crime scene investigators, fingerprint analysts, DNA profilers, ballistics experts and medical examiners who determine why a crime was committed and secure information relevant to the case.  A second special hands-on experience the Mob Museum offers is the Use of Force Training .  You will get placed in the shoes of law enforcement officers and exposes them to the types of training exercises officers undergo to be prepared for use-of-force situations.  As part of this training your get to use a CO2 pistol and gun belt while responding to real or perceived threats with “deadly” force.

Hours :  Sunday-Wednesday 9am-10pm; Thursday-Saturday 10am-Midnight.   Cost : $26.95; $33.95 with the Crime Lab Experience; $38.95 with the Use of Force Training; or $41.95 for all three.  They have discounts for locals, kids, militarty, and seniors.  Combo tickets deals available with the Neon Museum and the High Roller Ferris Wheel.   Museum Website :   HERE .

About Atomic Liquors :  Four blocks further down Fremont Street from the Heart Attack Grill is the Atomic Liquors Bar, the  oldest freestanding bar in Las Vegas .  Joe and Stella Sobchik had started Virginia’s Cafe here during WW1 in 1945, then saw their opportunity to become a tourist attraction as Vegas was booming thanks to nearby nuclear testing.  In the 1950s there were total there were 100 above-ground nuclear tests ( 828 more underground ) just 65 miles away from Las Vegas in Yucca Flats.  After getting their tavern license in 1952, Atomic Liquors Bar began having rooftop  mushroom cloud viewing parties .  Not yet knowing the dangers of nuclear fallout and radiation, these viewing parties in the 1950s were huge hits and gave Atomic Liquors fame that has lasted the test of time.

In its heyday, Atomic Liquors had a local clientele bolstered by regular visits from celebrities looking to avoid the attention they attracted on the Strip or Downtown Las Vegas.  The likes of the Rat Pack, Barbara Streisand, the Smothers Brothers, Clint Eastwood and other notable characters could be seen enjoying their favorite beverage and playing a friendly game of pool after their shows or productions.  In pop-cultural, Atomic Liquors has been featured in The Twilight Zone  as well as the movies  Casino and The Hangover .  We can’t get enough of Atomic Liquors’ atmosphere, signature cocktails, crisp craft beers, and outdoor beer garden-style patio.

15. Neon Museum & Boneyard :

Free Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour Map Fremont Street - Neon Museum & Boneyard

About The Neon Museum :  The first neon sign in Las Vegas was put up in 1928 at the Overland Hotel on Fremont Street.  The use of neon signs boomed and Sin City, especially Downtown, became a sea of neon through the 1980s.  As aging casinos were replaced in the 1990s many of them moved away from neon to a crazy of individually themed casinos like Caesar’s Palace.  As LCD and LED signage became available the old neon were disregarded at an even faster pace.

Seeing the culture of neon disappearing, the Allied Arts Council formed the  Neon Museum  in 1996 ( expanded in 2017 ) and started an effort to save an important piece of Las Vegas history.  The group worked with  Young Electric Sign Company  ( YESCO ) who had originally manufactured many of the neon signs in Las Vegas.  Some of the signs have been fully resorted and placed back into the Las Vegas landscape including a collection of them near the Neonopolis on Fremont Street which includes the Hacienda Horse and Rider sign.  Other signs have been placed right in the middle of Las Vegas Blvd including the Binion’s Horseshoe, the Bow & Arrow Motel sign, and the Silver Slipper which sits in front of the Neon Museum.

Today the Neon Museum has a visitor center inside the retro lobby of the former La Concha Motel and a 2-acre display yard known as the Boneyard.  While you can see a few of the signs peeking over the boneyard’s fence, taking the official tour is the only way to really see them up close for the full experience.  Before you even take the tour you know it’s going to be awesome from the giant high heel street lamp to the eclectic mix of signs.  The standard tour last one hour, takes you through a staged collection of 120 signs, and includes some very entertaining stories of the of the vintage sign fossils.  There is a great mix of urban decay and bright colors among the massive neon skeletons that will make your photographs really pop.  If you are looking for more private time with the photos you can submit a request for a photo or video shoot.

Guided Tours :  The Boneyard is   available to the public through a one-hour-long guided tour or as general admission.    Brilliant! , a 30-minute show, uses light projection to illuminate unrestored signs and incorporates music and archival footage to transport guests into Las Vegas’ history.  Availability varies and is based on the season.   Cost :  $19 for the Daytime tour; $28 for Night tour; $23 for Brilliant; $42 for Night tour + Brilliant.   Location :  770 Las Vegas Blvd North.   Museum Website :   HERE .

16. The Old Mormon Mission Fort :

Free Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour Map Fremont Street - old mormon mission fort

About The Old Mormon Mission :  Spanish explorers were in Nevada by 1776 and had even established their Old Spanish Trail ( Santa Fe to Las Angles ) with 100 miles of the Las Vegas.  By 1848, military man and mapmaker John C Fremont added the oasis in Las Vegas to is famous writings which later helped the Mormons and other settlers.  In 1847, the Mormons were pushed from Santa Fe to Salt Lake City but still wanted to connect to the snow-free route to the West and used Fremont’s findings to chart the path Southwest.

In 1855, thirty members of the LDS Church built a small adobe mission fort at the Las Vegas oasis to help link Salt Lake City with Los Angels.  The oasis creek was a prime location as it was the only free-flowing water in the valley which had led Spanish explorers to nickname the area Las Vegas ( The Meadow ).  This Mormon fort was the first permanent, non-Native settlement in the Las Vegas Valley although Native Americans had been in the area for thousands of years.  The 150-foot-long, two-story-tall, square fort served as a re-stocking point, a base camp to try to start a community, and saw traffic from people heading to California for the Gold Rush.

Due to conflicts with local Native American tribes, poor crop harvests, and low mining yields, Mormon Fort was abandoned in 1857.  As more settlers arrived to Las Vegas the old fort was used as a store and a ranch.  Helen Stewart ( nicknamed The First Lady of Las Vegas ) ranch for 18 years before selling land that would become Downtown Las Vegas to the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad ( Clark Line ) in 1902.  The remains of the Mormon Fort and oasis creek were turned into a state park in 1991 and is an interesting place to learn more about the city’s roots.  Next to the old Mormon Fort is the popular Natural History Museum ( website ) which is great with kids.

Local Strolls: 10K steps on the Vegas strip

Jesse Scott

Delve into Local Strolls, a series where writers reveal their favorite walks in their hometowns. Each route offers a snapshot of urban life, guiding you to lesser-known attractions and cherished local spots. Here, Jesse Scott outlines the best route for exploring Las Vegas's iconic Strip on foot.

While there is so much more to appreciate about Las Vegas beyond its glitzy, mega-casino lined Strip, let’s be real here: the Strip is Las Vegas’ main attraction and is a total must for newbies and veterans alike. It is constantly evolving – be it imploding classic casinos to build a major league baseball stadium (RIP, the Tropicana in 2024 to make way for the Athletics’ pending baseball stadium) or new restaurants/shops celebrating grand openings in the quietest nooks of resorts.

Often jammed with traffic and construction 24/7, you certainly don’t want to drive it ... unless you’re passing through town for a strictly scenic drive or want to crawl 5mph to your dinner reservation. The Strip was made for strolling and there is an extensive roadside network of super-wide sidewalks, crosswalks, pedestrian bridges and outdoor escalators for doing just that.

The beauty of a Strip stroll is you can stop for a reprieve at any moment, coming in the form of hitting a blackjack table right inside the Flamingo ’s Strip-side entrance or snagging a yard-long frozen cocktail at one of several Fat Tuesdays (and taking it with you – it’s legal). As for what to bring with you, Las Vegas is smack-dab in the middle of a desert. Don’t make the common mistake of having dehydration sneak up on you or sunburn – bring water and sunscreen if you’re walking during the day.

We've narrowed down the thousands upon thousands of dining, drinking, entertainment and logistical routes to choose from along the Strip to bring you the best itinerary for your Vegas stroll.

The exterior of a large casino

Where to start: Mandalay Bay

The core of the Strip runs from the golden-windowed Mandalay Bay on the southern end, north to Sydney Tower-resemblant the STRAT  – it’s approximately 4.3 miles one way. Things do get a bit more spread out north of the Wynn . So, if you’re looking to shave off some stroll mileage, it’s 2.9 miles one way – or about an hour – without any stops from Mandalay Bay to the Wynn. Start your trip north by visiting Mandalay's  Shark Reef Aquarium , which has more than 2000 critters to gawk at within its clear glass tunnel confines.

The walk: From Mandalay Bay, there is an indoor path connecting the resort with the neighboring pyramid-themed Luxor and medieval castle-esque Excalibur . Once you’ve reached Excalibur, cross a pedestrian bridge over Tropicana Ave and you’ve arrived at New York-New York .

Ride the Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York

This is Vegas, so why not get an in-ride roller coaster view of what’s ahead? The Big Apple Coaster weaves through an NYC-resemblant skyline with unique vistas of the iconic green mass, the MGM Grand across the street. The way it contrasts with the gray and oft-snow capped mountains in the distance is always beautiful.

The walk: Beyond New York-New York, hug the west side of the Strip, passing by T-Mobile Arena (the home of the Vegas Golden Knights), the Shops at Crystals super-luxe shopping corridor and Aria until you arrive at the Cosmopolitan .

A bar decorated with lots of hanging lights

Stop for photo ops and pizza at the Cosmopolitan

One of the quirkier photos you’ll take on the Strip is inside a giant black high-heel at the Cosmopolitan, just off the Strip entrance on the casino floor. Equally as dazzling and Instagram-worthy is its Chandelier Lounge . If hunger is beckoning, head up to level three and see if you can find the totally unlabeled Secret Pizza for a New York-style slice.

The walk: Continue north and pause between the towering fountains outside the Bellagio and, across the street, the Eiffel Tower replica attached to Paris Las Vegas . At Flamingo Rd, take the escalators and crosswalks to end up on the eastern side of the Strip until you arrive at Flamingo – it’s across the street from the sprawling Caesars Palace and adjacent Forum Shops .

Watch flamingos frolic and take in a little Vegas history

Las Vegas – especially the Strip – loves to tear things down and build anew. Amid all the contemporary glitz, the pink-windowed Flamingo is the oldest on the Strip, dating back to 1946. Beyond its chorus of slot machines, head to the free Flamingo Wildlife Habitat on-property where Chilean flamingos saunter about and giant koi fish swim in various ponds.

The walk: Outside of the Flamingo’s northern entrance is the pedestrian-only LINQ Promenade . At its eastern end is the High Roller – the largest observation wheel in the US – and, before then, O’Shea’s , which is renowned for its ultra-creamy Frozen Baileys concoction. Once you're refreshed, continue north, pass by the Mardi Gras-themed Harrah’s and arrive at the Venetian Resort .

Coast on a gondola through the Venetian

Off the Grand Canal Shoppes inside the Venetian, you can book a gondola ride that will weave you through sky-painted ceilings, under low bridges and past Roman-inspired architecture aplenty. There is an outdoor gondola experience, too, with vistas of the pirate-themed Treasure Island across the street. Indoor or outdoor, prepare to be serenaded by a singing gondolier.

The walk: Inside, stroll through the Venetian and its neighboring Palazzo until you reach a pedestrian overpass to the Wynn. For a quick detour, the biggest LED screen on Earth and entertainment venue, the Sphere , is right there to stare at.

Fountains lit up at night in front of a casino

Watch the Lake of Dreams fountain show at the Wynn

Whereas tickets to most shows on the Strip start in the upper-two or lower three-figures, there is a free one at the Wynn that often goes under the radar. Lake of Dreams is a multifaceted water attraction set on three acres, involving a 90ft waterfall, pine trees and a 5000-plus LED light spectacle. It’s best viewed from Bar Parasol , which has an outdoor patio and extensive cocktail menu.

The walk: If you’ve opted to end your walk at the Wynn, well, it’s time to either wander back south on the Strip, stroll to your hotel or snag a taxi/Uber/Lyft. If you still have some energy left in the tank, the “North Strip” is home to two of Las Vegas’ newest casino-resorts, Resorts World Las Vegas and Fontainebleau Las Vegas .

Bonus stop: dine like a baller at Fontainebleau Las Vegas

Fontainebleau Las Vegas, the tallest building in the entire state of Nevada , officially opened its doors in late 2023. It was a celebrity-filled spectacle with a Justin Timberlake private performance and appearances by the likes of Cher, Tom Brady, Sylvester Stallone and Kim Kardashian. The buzz at the Miami-inspired spot continues on the culinary front with buzzy, club-esque restaurants from Groot Hospitality , like Komodo and Papi Steak. For the ultimate Vegas splurge, roll with a Beef Case at Papi Steak – a 55-ounce Wagyu tomahawk steak that’s presented in a golden briefcase.

Description

Grab a drink and lets go! Hey everyone, I'm Jonathan and after months of exploration, I've put together the only original walking tour and experience of the must-see spots and hidden gems on the Las Vegas Strip. From good views and photo spots, floral displays, animal habitat & secret garden to floral conservatory with changing seasonal displays, the largest chocolate fountain, a million d0llar 2 million crystal chandelier bar, relaxing lounges with views of the Strip... to hidden bars, speakeasies and best food/ drink deals, such as where to find 3-course lunch specials, $3 beer, best food & drinks deals and happy hours - these are my favorite spots and must-see things that no one should miss - even spots locals don't know about. Whether you're new to Vegas, a first timer, solo traveler or on a girls trip, there's something for everyone (unless you're Vegan) so grab a drink and lets go. We'll see a lot and little bit of everything. Vegas is an overwhelming place so I've cut out the guesswork and the boring stuff and created a smooth small-group walking tour for a more efficient and less stressful trip. Saving you time and money from wandering around and wasting it on over-priced stuff. I'll also show you how to do quality in Vegas on a budget. We'll see a lot: Hidden Gems - speakeasy hiding behind a barbershop, hidden tequila & nacho bar, a secret pizza shop, Skybar & tea lounge where the celebrities/ athletes hide I'll also point out and show you where to find Some of the best food and drink deals: Prime happy hr spots like $1 shots, 2 mystery shots: $5, mystery beer, mystery cocktails for $10, $3 beers, $5 drafts, all-day 2-4-1 deals, $25 bottomless mimosas, 3-course lunch specials: $28, half-price food & drink deals, Affordable Michelin star bistro How/ where to eat & drink quality on a budget We'll also see some pretty stuff that no one should miss like: An Oasis & wildlife habitat w/ exotic birds, giant fish, pelicans, flamingos, floral gardens, sky-lit atriums, botanical garden w/ vibrant seasonal scenes made of exotic plants, flowers & trees, waterfalls, Italian architecture, Swarovski Chandelier bar, largest chocolate fountain, art gallery Photo spots, views of the strip & fountain show I also can do this as a bar crawl. Questions? Ask! Bringing kids under 21? We often stop for drinks and this is Vegas, not Disneyland. This isn't you typical "G" rated history tour like you did in Rome. I won't have a flag, no microphone in my hand, if anything is in my hand it'll probably be a beer. Small groups so I won't have 50 herding behind me. This is about seeing the must-see spots you shouldn't miss and experiencing Vegas. Not a two hour lecture on Vegas history.

  • *Recommended for the beginning of your trip, need something to do, Vegas veterans, business people who never get to venture around, bachelor and bachelorette parties, solo travelers, couples, girls trip, day drinkers, recently divorced, babysit your wife (or husband). Great for beginning so later you know the good spots to go back to. Get a lay of the land.
  • * Mostly indoors
  • * Operates rain or shine or 100 degrees.
  • * Walk from North to south-end
  • * Feel free to grab a drink to-go (we can walk and drink)
  • * I can take photos
  • * Not your typical walking tour. Not lecturing about history outdoors for 2 hrs.
  • *I don't work for Get Your Guide. This is my full-time job. My own tour business. This is how I put food on the table.
  • * Morning Tour: quiet, no crowds, shops are closed. Great for photos, early birds so you have the rest of your day
  • * Noon: light crowds, shops are opening, early happy hours
  • Evening Tour: Crowds, wilder, lights go on, bars, happy hours and its a giant block party

Las Vegas in a day, a Las Vegas birthday itinerary idea

If you’re going to do Las Vegas in a day , you need to be meticulous in your planning. This Las Vegas itinerary is a good place to start because it includes the top Vegas attractions that any visitor to Sin City should see.

First, opt for a ticket for the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus , which will let you easily move from one spot to the next. The bus tour travels along the Strip and Downtown, making 9 stops and arriving every 45 minutes. You can get on and off at your leisure at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign , the STRAT , and other landmarks.

High Roller, Las Vegas itineraries

One of those stops is the LINQ Promenade , a haven for shopping, dining, and entertainment. The centerpiece attraction is the High Roller , one of the world’s largest observation wheels.

I also recommend spending your day at some of the best hotels in Las Vegas . For example, The Venetian is home to the Grand Canal Shoppes and Madame Tussauds . It’s also worth seeing the Bellagio Fountains and the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas .

Las Vegas in a day itinerary

Begin your day in Las Vegas by visiting the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign . You can catch the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus  there and take it to the LINQ Promenade .

After exploring this entertainment area, hop back on the bus and get a tour of Downtown Las Vegas . If you’re not interested in downtown, you can walk over to The Venetian and check out Madame Tussauds and the gondola rides at the Grand Canal Shoppes .

Later, head back to the LINQ Promenade and ride the High Roller during sunset. At night, walk to the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas , where you’ll have a great view of the Bellagio Fountains . The water show is one of the best free things to do in Vegas , although if you want to see it from the Paris viewing deck, you should reserve a ticket  (It is also included at the Las Vegas All-Inclusive Pass  ).

2-day Las Vegas itinerary, the best Las Vegas weekend itinerary

If you’re wondering what to do in Vegas for the weekend , you have plenty of options. A 2-day Las Vegas itinerary allows you to make the most of your trip and even venture a bit outside the city. Weekends are also the best time to plan a birthday or friends’ trip because you can see the main attractions and enjoy the nightlife.

I recommend taking the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus  during the day to see some landmarks and popular resorts. For example, New York-New York has the Big Apple Coaster and Arcade , which is fun for all ages.

Mob Museum, 3 day las vegas itinerary

Then, you can take the bus downtown and take in the Fremont Street Experience and other attractions in downtown Las Vegas . Shortly before sunset, head to the LINQ Promenade and ride the High Roller . Then, enjoy the city views at night atop the SkyPod at the STRAT .

With another day in Vegas , you can use the first half for a Hoover Dam tour. Then, rest up before hitting a Vegas pool party or doing a bar crawl .

Las Vegas 2-day itinerary

Seeing the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign is a rite of passage, so start there. This is also where you can catch the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus , which will transport you around the Strip.

If you like thrill rides, stop at New York-New York ‘s Big Apple Coaster before continuing downtown. Then you can do the Las Vegas Downtown – Fremont St. walking tour , one of the best things to do in downtown Las Vegas .

Later on, head to the LINQ Promenade , where you can eat, shop, and ride the High Roller . You can also get awesome views from the 1,149-foot-tall SkyPod at the STRAT . The SkyPod has a late-night bar and lounge, so it’s the perfect place to wrap up a Las Vegas couples itinerary .

A Las Vegas weekend itinerary is ideal because you can experience some daytime activities in Las Vegas before diving into the nightlife.

First, take a break from the Strip with a half-day Hoover Dam tour . When you return to Vegas, take a quick break, then do go to a pool party in Las Vegas. If that’s not your thing, you can take in the scene at Fremont Street , perhaps with a ride on the SlotZilla zip line or a visit to the Mob Museum , one of the best Las Vegas museums .

In the evening, grab cocktails at a swanky lounge or do a bar crawl .

3-day Las Vegas itinerary, a Las Vegas bachelor party itinerary idea

Throwing a bachelor party in Las Vegas is quite the experience and your chance to go all out on activities. A 3-day Las Vegas itinerary gives you enough time to go wild in the city and explore the natural surroundings, too.

You can start this Las Vegas bachelor party itinerary with some go-kart racing at Las Vegas Mini Grand Prix . Then, take a midday break at the LINQ Promenade . In the evening, pre-game at Señor Frogs’ open bar , then go clubbing.

Marquee Nightclub, Las Vegas bachelor trip

For day 2 of this bachelor/bachelorette itinerary in Las Vegas , take a break from the Strip. I recommend exploring one of the most impressive natural wonders near Vegas, the Grand Canyon . Here, you can hike to some magnificent viewpoints and capture incredible photos.

On the last day, spend the morning doing one of the most popular activities for bachelor/bachelorette parties in Las Vegas, like blasting a few rounds at a shooting range, playing paintball, or even enjoying a morning in the Spa. Then, check out the hottest Vegas pool parties . If you prefer to stay dry, check out the Fremont Street Experience downtown.

To cap off your Las Vegas itinerary , do a bar crawl and enjoy the drinks and music.

Las Vegas 3-day itinerary

Begin your 3-day Las Vegas itinerary with a thrilling go-kart race at Las Vegas Mini Grand Prix . It’s especially fun with friends, and it’s a good way to escape the crowds for a bit.

Once you return to the Boulevard, visit the LINQ Promenade . Here, you can grab a bite to eat, do some shopping, ride the High Roller , and check out the other attractions.

After dark, gear up for an exhilarating evening at Señor Frogs’ open bar , then enjoy yourself in one of the best nightclubs in Las Vegas .

I suggest dedicating the second day of your Las Vegas itinerary to a day trip, like the Grand Canyon . The great thing about Sin City is that it’s close to so many beautiful natural areas. What could be better than visiting this wondrous canyon?

While you’re here, check out some of the best lookout points and hiking spots. You may even want to consider a Grand Canyon helicopter tour to make the event extra special.

If you need some Las Vegas trip ideas for your last day in the city, consider one of the most popular activities for bachelor parties such as paintball, going to a shooting range, or axe throwing. If that is not your thing, your team may enjoy spending the morning at one of the museums in Vegas . The Erotic Heritage Museum is lots of fun and quite fitting for a bachelorette party!

Upon returning to the Strip, suit up for a wild party at some of the best pools in Las Vegas . Or for something quieter, the Fremont Street walking tour is a great alternative.

To round out your night, a Vegas bar crawl is a popular Las Vegas bachelor party idea .

4-day Las Vegas itinerary, a romantic Las Vegas couples itinerary

With a 4-day Las Vegas itinerary , you can take full advantage of the best things to do in Vegas . I still recommend taking the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus  because it’ll take you along the Strip and downtown.

Also, be sure to check out the LINQ Promenade and consider visiting the nearby Springs Preserve . You can round out day 1 with the Bellagio Fountains show, maybe from the Eiffel Tower at Paris Hotel.

The Venetian Hotel, must-do in Las Vegas itinerary

After that whirlwind day, you’ll appreciate getting away from the city with a visit to the Grand Canyon . Then, on day 3, spend the morning in one of the best spas in the City. And after that, for a couple’s itinerary in Las Vegas , the Erotic Heritage Museum is a great idea. Another fun thing to do in Las Vegas as a couple is to go to the STRAT SkyPod for after-dinner drinks.

Finally, spend your last day taking a day tour to Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend, or Zion National Park . You can’t go wrong with either option, as they’re some of the best day trips from Vegas .

Las Vegas 4-day itinerary

For your first day in Sin City, I recommend getting a head-start by visiting the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign . Capture a memorable photo, then catch the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus , which will take you around the Strip.

Then, take a break from the Boulevard and visit one of the top attractions outside Las Vegas , like the  Springs Preserve .

Afterward, return to the Strip or check out downtown Las Vegas with a Fremont Street walking tour . If you want to stay on the Strip, I recommend going to Madame Tussauds at The Venetian and the gondolas at the Grand Canal Shoppes .

Then, stop at the LINQ Promenade and enjoy a sunset ride on the High Roller . At night, walk to the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas to watch the Bellagio Fountains . It’s one of the best things to do in Las Vegas at night , although if you want to see it from the Paris viewing deck, you should reserve a ticket .

For one of the most exciting Las Vegas family vacation itineraries , you must visit the Grand Canyon . This national park is absolutely gorgeous, so it’s a wonderful place to visit as a couple, with friends, or with children. Plus, on the way, you’ll pass the Hoover Dam , another place worth visiting.

Once you get to Grand Canyon Village , also known as the South Rim, you can see some of the most famous lookout points. One of the best is Hopi Point , where you can get panoramic views of the canyon, but if you want to have a completely different view of the canyon, I can’t recommend enough taking a helicopter tour at Grand Canyon.

After your day trip from the day before, rejuvenate with a massage or treatment at one of Las Vegas’ best spas . Then, use your free time exploring the Strip and doing some couples’ activities in Vegas . A few ideas are the Ethel M Chocolates Factory or the Fremont Street Experience .

In the evening, go to the Erotic Heritage Museum and visit the SkyPod at the STRAT . It’s one of the coolest rooftop bars in Las Vegas and the perfect way to end day 3 of this Las Vegas itinerary .

To end your 4-day Las Vegas itinerary , take a day tour to a nearby attraction. There are so many awesome day trips from Las Vegas , so it can be hard to choose. I recommend going to Zion National Park or visiting Antelope Canyon and neighboring Horseshoe Bend .

If you visit Zion National Park , you’re in for a treat because this place is full of beautiful hikes, overlooks, and natural structures. The hike at Angels Landing is a must-do, and you shouldn’t miss the iconic views at Court of the Patriarchs and the Virgin River .

The other day trip I recommend is Antelope Canyon , a gorgeous slot canyon with red, water-carved curves. Bring your camera, because when the light filters through the canyon walls, it’s one of the most ethereal scenes.

Plus, Antelope Canyon is very close to Horseshoe Bend , so you can visit both in one day. This imposing meander on the Colorado River is 984 feet tall, so you can imagine the views from here. It’s certainly worth adding to your Las Vegas trip itinerary !

5-day Las Vegas itinerary, the perfect first-time Vegas itinerary

Five days is ideal for a first-time Vegas itinerary . This way, you can see the best attractions on and off the Strip and have plenty of time to take in all the sights.

Start with a tour on the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus , which will take you down the Boulevard and through downtown. You’ll be able to hit the most popular spots like the LINQ Promenade , the Grand Canal Shoppes , and the Mob Museum . Later in the day, take the Las Vegas Downtown – Fremont St. walking tour and finish with a Bellagio Fountains show.

Grand Canyon, 4 day Las Vegas itinerary

The next day, spend some time perusing the best museums in Las Vegas , like Madame Tussauds and the Neon Museum . In the evening, check out the FlyLINQ Zipline and the Big Bus Night Tour . You can’t also leave the city without trying your luck in one of the  best casinos in Las Vegas.

I recommend using the last few days of your Las Vegas itinerary to take a multi-day tour. I like this one , which goes to Antelope Canyon , Grand Canyon , Zion , Bryce Canyon , and Monument Valley .

Las Vegas 5-day itinerary

As a newbie to Sin City, you must see the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign . There, you can catch the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus  and ride down the Strip. The bus will take you into the downtown district, where you can visit the Mob Museum , one of the top museums in Las Vegas .

Downtown Vegas is lots of fun and should definitely be on a first-time Vegas itinerary . You can learn more about this area by taking the Las Vegas Downtown – Fremont St. walking tour .

Afterward, hop back on the bus and go to The Venetian to see the Grand Canal Shoppes . Even if you just walk around there, you’ll be amazed by the architectural replicas of Italian landmarks. Since the LINQ Promenade is a short walk away, I recommend heading there and riding the High Roller observation wheel. It’s a great place to watch the sunset or see the Bellagio Fountains water show.

The great thing about a 5-day Las Vegas itinerary is that it gives you more time to explore and take in all the activities. Since you’ll have the time, I suggest visiting Madame Tussauds and the Neon Museum. These two Las Vegas museums offer unique exhibits you’ll only find in Sin City! Plus, they’re popular kid-friendly attractions in Vegas , so they’re perfect for adding to a Las Vegas family itinerary .

During the latter part of the day, check out the FlyLINQ Zipline at LINQ Promenade , and soar over this bustling entertainment hub. You can round out the evening with a Big Bus Night Tour to see the Strip’s most famous landmarks. For example, I recommend stopping by some of the most popular casinos in Las Vegas.

After exploring the best attractions on Las Vegas Strip , it’s time to start your multi-day trip. This 3-day tour begins with a visit to Zion and Bryce Canyon.

Zion National Park is a gorgeous area with narrow canyons, mountains, natural pools, and wildlife. During your tour, you’ll have plenty of photo opportunities to capture the majestic cliffs and iconic sights like Weeping Rock . You can also embark on one of the park’s top hikes, such as the Emerald Pools Trail , which features waterfalls and turquoise lagoons.

Afterward, you’ll go to Bryce Canyon , a national park characterized by hoodoos or natural sandstone spires. These red-orange structures create some magnificent arches and bridges, as well as Bryce Amphitheater . After exploring the beauty of this park, you’ll wrap up day 3 of this Las Vegas itinerary at a Bryce Canyon campsite.

Day 4 of this Vegas itinerary begins with an early morning drive past Lake Powell , a scenic reservoir along the Colorado River. Along the way, your tour guide will take you to Antelope Canyon , one of our favorite day trips from Las Vegas .

Antelope Canyon is a photographer’s paradise, although anyone can appreciate the water-carved slot canyon and its striated walls. You’ll want to have your camera ready to capture the filtered light beams coming through the canyon.

The next part of your journey takes you to Monument Valley , a vast desert landscape. You’ll board a 4×4 Jeep and ride through the Navajo lands while learning about the history of this spectacular place. Finally, you’ll have the memorable experience of camping under the stars.

The last stop on this 5-day Las Vegas itinerary is the beautiful Grand Canyon . You’ll start with a visit to an authentic Navajo Trading Post and have the option to do a helicopter flight over the canyon. I highly recommend adding this to your Las Vegas itinerary . The Grand Canyon is one of the best road trips from Las Vegas , and a Grand Canyon heli-tour is an unforgettable experience.

If you don’t take the flight, you can take a hike along the canyon rim and hear from a knowledgeable guide about the area’s history and geology. Get acquainted with this massive natural wonder and witness the views from its famous lookout points. At the end of the day, your tour group will head back to Vegas.

7 days in Las Vegas itinerary, the best Las Vegas family vacation itinerary

If you have the time and budget for a 7-day Las Vegas itinerary , there is plenty of fun to be had! You’ll be able to maximize your trip and see the best of the Strip, downtown Las Vegas, and the surrounding areas.

To start, check out the most popular Vegas attractions and sights by taking the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus . Be sure to check out iconic landmarks like the LINQ Promenade and Madame Tussauds . In the evening, go to the   Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas  to watch the mesmerizing Bellagio Fountains show.

Paris Eiffel Tower, 7 day itinerary Las Vegas

Begin day 2 at a Las Vegas waterpark , then visit the Las Vegas Natural History Museum . Later, get an adrenaline rush by riding the Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York and soaring along the FlyLINQ Zipline .

For days 3-5, take a multi-day tour like this one that goes to Antelope Canyon , Grand Canyon , Zion , Bryce Canyon , and Monument Valley .

When you return to the city, get some chill time at one of the best Las Vegas pools . Then, visit the nearby Red Rock Canyon and get your nature fix.

Valley of Fire, what to do in Vegas for the weekend

Finally, end your ultimate Las Vegas itinerary with a stop at the Valley of Fire , one of the most beautiful places off the Vegas Strip .

Las Vegas 7-day itinerary

For your first day in Las Vegas , get acquainted with the city by seeing some of the top attractions on the Strip . It’s always nice to start with a visit to the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign . From there, catch the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus  and check out the downtown district.

You can take the Las Vegas Downtown – Fremont St. walking tour   or walk over to The Venetian , one of the best Vegas hotels . The resort is home to Madame Tussaud’s wax museum, a fun place to go in Las Vegas with kids . The hotel also has the Grand Canal Shoppes , which mimic Venice, Italy, and its historical landmarks.

Later, stop at the LINQ Promenade to ride the High Roller , perhaps at sunset. After dusk, go to the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas and watch the famous Bellagio Fountains show. You’ll have to reserve a ticket for the viewing deck in advance.

If you plan on making this a Las Vegas family vacation itinerary , begin your second day at a Las Vegas waterpark . Mandalay Bay Beach at Mandalay Bay and Splash Zone at Circus Circus are right on the Strip. Or you can visit a nearby water park, like Lake Las Vegas or Cowabunga Bay .

Another fun family activity is going to a Las Vegas museum , like the Natural History Museum . After some chill time, you can experience some thrills on the Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York and the FlyLINQ Zipline .

Since you have 7 days for your Las Vegas travel itinerary , you have enough time to take a multi-day trip. My top recommendation is this 3-day tour , which begins with a visit to Zion and Bryce Canyon.

The beautiful mountain peaks, hiking trails, and canyon structures of Zion National Park will take your breath away. You’ll have lots of chances to capture lovely photos during your tour, as well as explore popular hikes like the Emerald Pools Trail .

After spending a few hours in Zion, you’ll go to nearby Bryce Canyon . This national park is known for its sandstone hoodoos, which create intricate shapes, arches, and natural bridges. Your tour guide will point out famous landmarks like the Bryce Amphitheater , and you’ll spend the night camping in the impressive national park.

Your Las Vegas travel itinerary continues with a drive past Lake Powell to Antelope Canyon . This is one of the most popular day trips from Vegas , and you’ll quickly see why. The curvaceous, striped walls of this slot canyon will mesmerize you, especially when the light filters through the walls.

Once you take in the unique environment of Antelope Canyon, you’ll continue the trip to Monument Valley . Better yet, you’ll see this incredible desert dreamscape while riding in a 4×4 Jeep. A Navajo guide will tell you all about Monument Valley’s history, and then you’ll spend the evening at a starlit campsite.

Day 5 of the Las Vegas itinerary will take you to a traditional Navajo Trading Post, where you can peruse the offerings. Then, you may opt for a Grand Canyon helicopter tour , something I wholeheartedly recommend.

If you don’t do the flight, you can witness the majestic magnitude of the Grand Canyon on foot. Visiting this natural wonder is one of the best road trips from Las Vegas , so take your time hiking along the canyon’s rim and admiring its viewpoints. You’ll have some free time to take it all in before heading back to Sin City.

Now that you’re back in the city, why not recharge with a visit to one of the best pools in Las Vegas ? Chilling out by the water is one of the best things to do in Vegas during the day when the beating sun is at its most intense.

Some of the most popular pools belong to Las Vegas’ top hotels , so consider booking a room there. For example, the Garden of the Gods Pool at Caesars Palace is an elegant European oasis, while Encore Beach Club at The Wynn is perfect for a Las Vegas bachelorette itinerary .

Once you feel refreshed, you may want to visit nearby Red Rock Canyon . This state park offers beautiful views and attractions, many of which you can see along the Scenic Drive . For a more exciting adventure, take an e-bike tour along the route.

Red Rock Canyon also has family-friendly hikes like the Petroglyph Wall , Lost Creek Canyon , and Calico Hills . The park is about 20 minutes from the Strip, so you can easily fit it into a 7-day Las Vegas itinerary .

For the last day of your Las Vegas itinerary , I suggest visiting the Valley of Fire . Some people find it hard to believe that this incredible park is just 45 minutes from Vegas. Here, the landscape is defined by bright red Aztec sandstone that forms natural arches, peaks, and canyons.

Besides the fiery sandstone, the Valley of Fire is home to colorful landscapes like the Rainbow Vista and Pastel Canyon . You’ll also find impressive natural structures like Arch Rock , Elephant Rock , and the Beehives .

Be sure to travel along the park’s Scenic Drive, also known as Mouse’s Tank Road . I also recommend doing a hike or two to see the Fire Wave and the ancient pictographs . I guarantee you won’t regret ending your Las Vegas trip itinerary here!

How many days do you need in Las Vegas?

It’s hard to see all of Las Vegas in a day , but if you’re short on time, 2 days is enough. Ideally, I recommend a 3-day itinerary for Las Vegas so you can see all the top attractions.

I hope this gave you some trip ideas for Las Vegas ! Leave me a comment below to tell me your favorite Las Vegas travel itinerary , or to ask me any questions you have. Enjoy your trip to Sin City!

A self-guided Las Vegas film locations walking tour (with map)

Posted on Last updated: November 22, 2023

Explore Sin City through the locations of iconic movies like Ocean’s Eleven , The Hangover and Casino on this self-guided Las Vegas film locations walking tour – with map and directions included.

A self-guided Las Vegas film locations walking tour (with map)

With its bright lights, blackjack tables, glitz and glamour, it’s no wonder that the larger-than-life city of Las Vegas in Nevada is a favourite location for filmmakers. There have been over 130 movies filmed in Las Vegas, including classics like Viva Las Vegas , Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas , Casino , Ocean’s Eleven and The Hangover.

Some of Las Vegas’ filming locations have been and gone, and others only ever existed on a Hollywood sound stage. But there are still plenty of spots around the Strip and downtown where you can see where scenes from movies old and new were filmed.

So join me and follow in the footsteps of Dean Martin, Elvis and George Clooney on this Las Vegas film locations walking tour. The whole walk is just over seven miles miles (with bus/taxi shortcuts) but beware that Las Vegas can get incredibly hot, so make sure you’ve got a bottle of water and a hat, and avoid the middle of the day in the summer.

A self-guided Las Vegas film locations walking tour

Looking down the Las Vegas Strip

Start your Las Vegas film locations walking tour at the Tropicana casino, located towards the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip – the 4.2-mile-long stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard which is home the city’s most famous hotels and casinos.

To get there you can take the Las Vegas Monorail to the MGM Grand, which is a seven-minute walk away. Or catch the Deuce bus – if you’re travelling northwards it stops at the Tropicana but southwards the closest stop is across the road by the Excalibur.

The Tropicana

The Tropicana is one of Las Vegas’ original 1950s casinos, and although it’s had a few facelifts since then it’s still kept a touch of vintage style, including the 1957 red Chevrolet Bel Air parked out front. It’s had links to the Mob both on-screen and off during its history, with original owner Phil Kastel a close associate of gangster Frank Costello.

The Tropicana features as Michael Corleone’s casino in the first Godfather film (1972). Though by the time The Godfather Part II (1974) was filmed, its name was changed to the Tropiglia to avoid any legal issues (not that that alias would be hard to guess!).

The casino was also home to the French-inspired Folies Bergère show for almost 50 years, whose scantily clad showgirls appeared in Elvis’ Viva Las Vegas (1964). And Sean Connery’s James Bond stayed in the Tropicana in Diamonds are Forever (1971).

From the Tropicana, follow the Strip northwards, crossing over the road to reach the ARIA Resort and Casino (0.8 miles).

ARIA Resort & Casino

Opened in 2006, the ARIA is one of several casinos along the Strip which are run by MGM Resorts. On screen it featured as the location for a convention in Jason Bourne (2016), the fifth of the Bourne films starring Matt Damon. Damon chases Vincent Cassel through the ARIA’s convention centre then down the Strip in a high-speed car chase.

The ARIA’s super-luxurious Sky Suites, Liquid Pool Lounge and casino also appeared in Last Vegas (2013), which starred Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline and Michael Douglas as four retirees splurging on an epic VIP-style Vegas bachelor party.

The ARIA resort and casino in Las Vegas

Next walk on past the Cosmopolitan to reach the Bellagio (0.5 miles).

The Bellagio

The lavish Bellagio was the world’s most expensive resort when it opened in 1998. And it’s one of the best-known Las Vegas film locations thanks to 2001’s Ocean’s Eleven (and its sequels), the remake of 1960s’ Frank Sinatra Brat Pack movie Ocean’s 11 .

Ocean’s Eleven producer Jerry Weintraub and Bellagio owner Steve Wynn were friends, so the production team got a 24-hour, all-areas pass to film there for five weeks. Among the locations featured in the film are the casino floor, botanical gardens, art gallery, Picasso restaurant and the lobby with its colourful Dale Chihuly glass ceiling.

But the most famous scene was shot by the lake at the front of the casino, where the gang gather at the end of the film to watch the fountains choreographed to music. You can see the show every 30 minutes in the afternoons and every 15 minutes in the evening.

The fountains also appeared in Jason Bourne and Lucky You , a 2007 film about a Vegas poker player. The filmmakers wanted to use the Bellagio’s poker room, but it had been renovated since 2003 when the film was set. So instead they created a replica on a sound stage, with the production crew buying up old fixtures that were auctioned off.

Fountains at the Bellagio casino in Las Vegas, Nevada USA

Cross over West Flamingo Road to the Bellagio’s neighbour Caesars Palace (0.2 miles).

Caesars Palace

Caesars Palace opened in the 1960s and took design inspiration from Ancient Rome, with a giant statue of Julius Caesar in the entrance and décor of fountains, mosaics and marble. On screen it most notoriously featured in The Hangover (2009) and its follow-up Part III (2013) as the hotel where the guys stay during their drama-filled stag weekend.

Caesars Palace’s entrance, lobby, check-in desk and the Garden of the Gods pool are all used in the film. But although their luxurious room is based on the hotel’s Emperors Suite, in reality it was recreated in a Hollywood studio (probably because of the tiger).

The real Emperors Suite does feature in Rain Man (1998) though, as where the brothers spend the night after a big blackjack win, and it’s still nicknamed the Rain Man Suite. Caesars Palace can also be see in Iron Man (2008) and Intolerable Cruelty (2003). And Tony Soprano stays there in series six of the TV show The Sopranos (2006).

The lobby at Caesars Palace, a Las Vegas movie location for The Hangover

Leaving Caesars Palace, carry on walking up the Strip to The Venetian (0.6 miles).

The Venetian

The Venetian includes replicas of Venice landmarks like Piazza San Marco, St Mark’s Campanile, Doge’s Palace and Rialto Bridge along with its own gondoliers. It was built on the site of the old Sands casino, which was a filming locations for 1960’s Ocean’s 11 .

The Venetian features in 2001 comedy Rat Race , starring John Cleese and Rowan Atkinson, where the casino’s eccentric owner devises a competition where teams have to race from Vegas to Silver City, New Mexico to win $2 million. A suite at the hotel is also used in Sandra Bullock film Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (2005).

The Venetian casino, Las Vegas, Nevada USA

Carry on north along the Strip until you reach Circus Circus (1.3 miles). Along the way you pass Treasure Island, which was another of the Las Vegas movie locations for Miss Congeniality 2, as well as Knocked Up (2007) with Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd.

Circus Circus

Circus Circus is home to the world’s largest permanent circus and you can see classic circus acts like clowns, jugglers, trapeze artists and tightrope walkers in their free shows. They take place every hour from 1.30pm on weekdays or 11.30am at weekends.

Although Circus Circus is mentioned in Hunter S. Thompson’s novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas , when it came to making the 2008 movie version of the book, the casino’s owners refused permission to film there. So the producers created their own version of Circus Circus’ rotating merry-go-round bar (the real one is sadly no longer there).

The real Circus Circus is seen on screen though in Diamonds are Forever (1971). Jay Sarno, who owned the casino at the time, was a big James Bond film fan so let the production team use it for filming, and bagged himself a supporting role in the film as a scientist.

las vegas walking tour map

Just opposite Circus Circus is the site of the old Riviera casino. It was knocked down in 2015, but before that it was used as a location for films including Casino (1995), Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery (1997) and the original Ocean’s 11.

The journey to your next stop is a bit longer, so you might want to either catch the Deuce bus or take a taxi to Graceland Wedding Chapel (2.2 miles). Along the way you pass The Strat (formerly called the Stratosphere), which was used as a location for 2005 Ridley Scott action movie Domino, where the casino owner is robbed of $10 million.

Graceland Wedding Chapel

Graceland Wedding Chapel has been hosting weddings since 1939, with celebrity names like Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Ray Cyrus tying the knot there. Elvis Prestley also visited in the 1960s and gave the chapel permission to use the Graceland name. It was renamed after his death and was the first place you could get married by an Elvis impersonator.

On screen, the Graceland Wedding Chapel is where Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek get married in 1997 rom-com Fools Rush In , and it also features in the film version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas . If you fancy trying it out for yourself while you’re in Vegas, their wedding and vow renewal packages start from $179 (and Elvis is optional!).

The Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas

From Graceland Wedding Chapel, continue walking up Las Vegas Boulevard and then turn right along Fremont Street – home to nightly sound and light shows at the Fremont Street Experience – and follow the street as far as Atomic Liquors (0.8 miles).

Atomic Liquors

Atomic Liquors is the oldest freestanding bar in Las Vegas. It opened in 1945 and gets its name from the days when drinkers would climb onto the roof to watch explosions at the nuclear test site 50 miles down the road (that and the atomic-strength cocktails).

Atomic Liquors is another location from the first Hangover film. It also featured in Casino , with Martin Scorcese and his crew using the garage next door as a production studio. Today the bar has been restored to its former glory, and you can almost imagine former regulars Barbra Streisand or Sammy Davis Jr are about to pull up a stool next to you.

Atomic Liquors sign in Las Vegas

Finally finish your Las Vegas film location walk by taking North 9th Street under the expressway and out to the Neon Museum (0.9 miles) – it’s not the smartest neighbourhood, so if you’re on your own or at night you might want to take a taxi.

Neon Museum

The Neon Boneyard and Museum is where signs from classic casinos like the Golden Nugget and Stardust come to spend their retirement. There are over 250 signs – and a few giant fibreglass models – which date back to the 1930s and tell the story of the city.

The original boneyard location (which was known as the Young Electric Sign Co back then) is where Danny DeVito’s character comes to a sticky end in the sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks! (1996). Since then the signs have been relocated to a new Neon Boneyard and Museum, which was used in the film Last Vegas (2013) as well as lots of music videos.

Even the museum’s visitor centre is recycled – it was the lobby of the old La Concha Motel, which had its own taste of film stardom in Casino (1995). The Neon Museum is a popular place, especially in the evenings, so booking in advance is recommended.

From the Neon Museum it’s around a 15-minute walk back to Fremont Street where you can catch the Deuce bus or a taxi down the Strip to return to the starting point.

If you’d like to do this Las Vegas movie walk yourself, click on the map below to access directions through Google maps. The full route is 7.2 miles (11.6km) but there are a couple of sections where you can take a taxi or bus to cut it down to 4–5 miles. It would take around 2.5 hours to walk straight through, but allow four hours including stops.
