Lovejoy with Crywank and Spilly Cave – First Avenue – Minneapolis, MN May 26 th , 2023

When fans start lining up outside the venue in the early morning, more than 12 hours before a sold-out show begins, it’s a sign that an incredible and hugely popular group is playing, and this was indeed true for British indie-rock band Lovejoy, who brought their “Across the Pond” tour to the iconic First Avenue main room on May 26 th , 2023.  The mainly teenage and young adult audience who braved the hot pavement for hours to get a good spot at the show seemed to enjoy the excitement and energy of the wait, and were making new friends, trading bracelets, photo cards, and stickers. Even the Minneapolis Fire Department got in on the fun, stopping by to pass out stickers, water, and before departing, blasting some Lovejoy tunes to the excited fans lined up on the street.

The first band of the night performing were a Pennsylvania band Spilly Cave, originally the work of lead singer Billy Cave.  Minneapolis was their first night out with the tour, and their energy and excitement was on par with the sold-out Minneapolis crowd.  Their music was a great mix of upbeat rock with impressive guitar riffs and booming bass and drums and bubbly pop with an almost vibrant undertones matched with their vibrant outfits and personalities.  They were both a fun group to listen to and watch perform.

Crywank followed this up with a contrastingly dark and raw acoustic solo performance.  Guitarist Jay Clayton took the stage with just his acoustic guitar and a microphone, he delivered a stark and edgy, while hauntingly deep and beautiful set of songs.  His lyrics were emotionally transparent and took on an almost narrative nature, but his passionate delivery forged an instant connection with the crowd.  While at times, his delivery was almost tormented, it made for a dramatic performance which was captivating, and the beautiful musicality of his performance shone through the darkness.

From the moment Lovejoy stepped onto the stage, to the deafening screams of crowd, their energy was infectious.  They opened their set with “Warsaw” off their EP “Wake Up & It’s Over” which was released just two weeks before.  Their music is upbeat and almost playful, with playful riffs from lead guitarist Joe Goldsmith, but this is contrasted with heavy bass from Ash Kabosu and booming drums from Mark Boardman – fitting for their tagline “the only indie band with a double kick drum”. It’s a unique style that is captivating and easy to get drawn into.  Their playful personalities also juxtaposed often complex and darker lyrics, addressing the complications of life and relationships, and powerfully and yet also playfully delivered by front man Wilbur Soot.  Their 14-song set was mix of songs from their recent EP as well as some older favorites like “Taunt” and “One Day”.  With relatable lyrics delivered with vulnerability, and yet intensity, and supported with unique and intricate musicality, Lovejoy is a charismatic band that is surely one to watch rise on the indie rock scene.

Sexyy Red Announces 2024 Sexyy Red 4 President U.S. Tour

In December, the group’s first U.S. shows — two in Los Angeles and two in New York — quickly sold out, packing venues like L.A.’s Moroccan Lounge with a steady flow of 20-something, mostly female, fans marching to the beat of the band’s double kick drum percussion. Lovejoy’s visit would reveal the band’s status as unlikely heartthrobs and showcase their clever banter and mischievous wit.

Along with the tour announcement, Lovejoy has released a video for the band’s hard-charging new single “Call Me What You Like.” Soot has a penchant for casting himself as a hopeless romantic — a “Jim Halpert” from The Office type, replete with entangled numbness and inescapable inadequacy — and yet he refuses to melt into a floor puddle with a kitschy breakup song. As it turns out, “Call Me What You Like” is a surprising and satisfying middle finger to the notion of having it all as it mucks around in the middle phases of an early relationship close to collapse.

“And so I find’s myself in your mum’s bedroom,” Soot sings on the new single. “Fighting with the pink roller blinds. It’s on pay-per-view. Just place your bests on who’s lost their mind.” When asked what the line meant during a brief interview with bandmates Joe Goldsmith, Ash Kabosu and Mark Boardman, Soot laughed and offered up, “I’m not necessarily sure, in that song I just find myself thinking a lot about her mom’s bathroom and going through the drawers.”

genuinely the most insane night of my life. finally seeing lovejoy perform after being a wilbur fan since 2019, and a fan of lovejoy even before releases was the best thing ive ever experienced. lovejoy birmingham was perfect, with everyone being super sweet and whenever something happened it was immediately dealt with. the boys performed so well despite the issues with the heat, and i cannot even begin to describe how much this night meant to me. i hope to see them perform live again soon. thank you for a life-changing night.

best day of my life. i cried the second they came on stage, i’ve been a wilbur fan since late 2019 and a lovejoy fan before there name even got released. i love it so much i ended up seeing them again on the same week. we fought so hard for the tickets and i’m so glad we didn’t give up bc it rly was the best experience of my life. money comes back memories don’t.

I would love to see yall in Arkansas, or even Oklahoma. There are plenty good venues in OK and the walmart AMP is AR is awesome! Idk what else to put here i just need more words to submit :p

On a Twitch stream, she accused Wilbur of biting her without consent after she triggered a safe word. As a result, Wilbur and his band faced massive backlash, leading to them canceling their planned tour dates , including a handful of major festival gigs, claiming concern for the singer's mental health.

Wilbur previously claimed to being "deeply shocked" by the accusations. In a statement on Twitter, he wrote: "I regrettably became slobbish, disrespectful, and selfish. These actions caused a lot of pain to my ex-girlfriend and I've since sought therapy to address these behaviors, making significant lifestyle changes to rectify my past actions."

The Minecraft YouTuber made an Instagram story explaining how his band, Lovejoy , plans move forward from the allegations made against him by Twitch streamer Shubble , otherwise known as Shelby. Wilbur revealed that the band is planning to tour across Australia and release a new single, I'll Look Good When I'm Sober.

Wilbur said: "I'm back from my break I just want to make this quick video to briefly talk about what the four of us at Lovejoy have planned for the rest of this year, but first I wanted to mention that some stuff was said about me on the internet a couple months ago and if you haven't already seen I responded back in February that response is all I want to say on the matter for now."

Inside Shubble's accusations against Wilbur

The star admitted that she initially consented to the biting, but alleged that Wilbur ignored their safe word, grinding his teeth harder before releasing when she would use it. She additionally claimed to be a target of abuse and manipulation.

Shelby previously said on stream: "His biting escalated to a point where I was covered in bruises all over my arms and they hurt and he would poke at them for fun and he even felt so comfortable showing off my bruises that he had caused to our friends. He would even joke that it looked like he abused me."

Shelby added: "I had no problem with just biting.

"That isn't even the most uncommon thing, but he did mention something early that I should have taken as a red flag and he wanted to make sure I was okay with him biting me because he didn't want me to come back later and say that he abused me."

Another country singer takes the minnesota state fair's final grandstand slot for 2024.

With only one slot left to fill in its 2024 grandstand concert lineup — and only one country music show so far on the schedule — the Minnesota State Fair has not surprisingly announced another twanger, Jon Pardi , as its final confirmed headliner.

Pardi will hit the fair's big stage on Aug. 28 with Canadian newcomer MacKenzie Porter for his opener. Tickets for the Wednesday night concert go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. via eTix.com or 800-514-3849, with prices ranging from $44 to $88.

Known for such singles as "Head Over Boots," "Dirt on My Boots," "Ain't Always the Cowboy" and the new one "Cowboys and Plowboys" — clearly, the guy likes motifs in his songs — Pardi could not make his booking at the State Fair public until after his previously confirmed appearance near the Twin Cities at the muddied Winstock country music festival two weekends ago. The California native, 39, opened for Jason Aldean on the main stage there.

Pardi joins Blake Shelton as the second country headliner in the fair's 2024 lineup. Here's the final schedule for this year's grandstand series :

Gov. Walz says he may call special session over Minnesota flood damage

ST. PAUL, Minn. —  Gov. Tim Walz and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar took an aerial tour of the region earlier in the day to survey flood damage . Thereafter, Walz said he would potentially call a special session if the damage costs end up higher than the relief money currently available.

"The human impact was, certainly in Waterville, many more homes, the impact certainly feels pretty dramatic with water up to the second floor," Walz said Tuesday. "The process of starting clean up and that will simultaneously happen with damage assessments. There is a set process on how this works."

The governor talked about working with local and federal partners to help with the rebuilding efforts but also warned that it will take time. 

Klobuchar said that at $10.5 million is when federal aid, kicks in for public infrastructure, which is paid on a county-by-county basis once a disaster deceleration is made. In all, 12 counties are in disaster declarations from earlier weather events this year.

Klobuchar said that, as of yet, there are no deaths reported as a result of these latest floods.

The governor and senator were joined by Minnesota National Guard Major General Shawn Manke, Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson and Minnesota Department of Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen.

Manke updated that over 40 guard members are in Waterville, helping man seven pump stations and making sure they are operating 24/7. Additionally, an armory in the Faribault area will open with assistance from the Red Cross to help families that may need it.

Petersen said that his administration is working closely with the USDA but the best thing farmers facing issues can do is go to their county office to report any issues or damage — crop loss, water in fields or damage to livestock facilities.  

"Up in the air, it really shows the widespread difficulties our farmers face," said Peterson. "A lot of those fields are going to struggle in the coming days and weeks." 

The Department of Agriculture has updated a new website with resources for flooding issues that farmers or Minnesotans related to agriculture may have. That can be found on the Minnesota Department of Agriculture state website.  

On Monday, Walz called the flooding "unprecedented,"  but said the state is prepared. It's why there's a partial activation at the State Emergency Operation Center, where partner state agencies are working together to coordinate what they call a "One Minnesota Effort."  

Massive flooding is now impacting nearly half of Minnesota. As of Tuesday morning, a few rivers in Minnesota are near, or in a few cases even above, record levels, including the Des Moines River near Avoca and Windom, and the Minnesota River at Henderson and Jordan.

Le Sueur County, which includes Waterville, has declared a state of emergency due to flood damage.  Waterville officials said this is the worst flooding the town has ever seen . Parts of the city are underwater due to 14 to 18 inches of cumulative rainfall. Some areas are worse than others, with flood water knee-deep to hip-deep.

Following a request from the Le Sueur County Sheriff, Governor Walz declared a peacetime emergency on Saturday and authorized the Minnesota National Guard to assist with flood operations.  

Flooding on the Blue Earth River caused an abutment of the  Rapidan Dam  to partially fail on Monday morning, and it remains in  "imminent failure condition ." That dam is located just southwest of Mankato.

The Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park in Northern Minnesota closed tours to their underground mine due to flooding. 

Last week, the mine was hit with 7.6 inches of water in less than 24 hours. The ground near the mine was already soaked due to the constant rainfall that had persisted for days before.

The mine has pumps to remove water called a dewatering system, but last Tuesday night it was struck by lightning, cutting power to the park and stopping the pumps.

A custom pump was installed today to remove water and another is on its way to be installed Monday.

Potential damage to the mine has yet to be assessed. As of now, they are hoping to have underground tours open again July 23. 

“The expectation at this point is that even once there are fully operating pumps on all the levels that it will take between two and three weeks to get all of the water pumped out,” said Sara Berhow with the Minnesota Department of Natural. “After all the water is pumped out, then of course they’ll need to be some assessments to see if any repairs are needed to make sure that everything and all the areas where tour participants would go is safe.”

Three levels of the mine have experienced flooding: level 12, 22 and 27. Level 12 is cleared of water as of Monday. Level 22 has two fully operating pumps. They are in the process of installing new pumps in level 27, which is submerged up to about two feet from the ceiling of that level. The pumps on that floor are not functioning due to being too submerged underwater. 

The mine was reopened to underground tours earlier this year after closing tours due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a $9.3 million reconstruction project. 

“The staff at the park was so excited to have tours back,” Sara Berhow said. “They’re disappointed that there has been a halt in that temporarily and they're working hard to get tours back and get people back as soon as it’s safe to get people back in the mine.”

Tours of the mine above ground are still available and are free and do not require a reservation. These are hosted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
