Seattle Restaurant Week turned to Proxi to display all of the participating restaurants in Seattle Restaurant Week 2022. The map gathered over 300,000 views and the organizers were able to deliver usage analytics back to the restaurant.

Houston Mom, Marcella, used Proxi to crowdsource formula needs and availability during the U.S. Formula Shortage. Thousands of people used the map in their time of need.

Make Your Own Virtual Push Pin Travel Map

Hi Everyone. So I recently came across a really great website for making your very virtual push pin travel map. What’s a push pin travel map you may ask? Well, back in the old days people would take a physical map of a state or the whole country and then at every stop place a pin to mark where they have been. A virtual version is just that, done on the computer, so you can post it online to your website or make it shareable for friends and family to see and take part in your travels.

I searched for a while and came across SnazzyMaps.com while searching for a mapping tool to work with our WordPress website. They have a plugin available for WordPress and you can custom create your push pin travel map on their website using a whole host of features. They even have different styles of maps that can match up well with your website themes. Once done you just copy your code and place it on your website for all to see. Oh, and it’s FREE! A lot of other websites of this type were charging monthly subscription fees and one time fees. I wasn’t going to pay $15 a month to host a map.

So if you want to see how I created our Push Pin Travel Map scroll on down.

Alright, let’s get started. First thing you will have to do is create an account with Snazzy Maps.

With that out of the way you are now all set to begin creating your Virtual Travel Push Pin Map or any type of map for that matter.

Build a Map

Clicking on BUILD A MAP on the Snazzy Maps header brings you to the first step of making your map.

Here you can choose your “Style” of Map. There are a lot of them, so don’t feel overwhelmed.

You can then customize the size of the map, the center point and the zoom level. The Center Point is where the map centers when it loads. If you want it to be on your home town, you can set it to that. Zoom level will change how far in or out on the map it will be when it loads.

Once you have that set you can move on to adding your first map marker. Oh, and don’t worry, you can always go back and make adjustments to your settings.

Name your marker in the box. You can name it anything you want. I chose for this example, to name mine the Statue of Liberty Monument.

Next is the Location field. There are two options. If you know the Lat and Long enter those. If not, click on Search for a Location and you can type in your place of interest. As you can see below I typed in “statue” and the second result was the Statue of Liberty National Monument. I selected that and then moved on to choose my marker type.

Snazzy Maps gives you three different options for your map icon. The first one is the Default Google Map Icon. The second is a Styled Marker, which has a lot of choices to choose from. And finally, the third, which I circled is the Custom Marker Icon option. I chose this for most of our icons. I feel it adds a great touch to our map.

When you click on Custom Marker you will get an upload box. Navigate to your folder for a stored icon and select your icon. It will automatically load into the preview and be put on the map as you can see below. You can modify the height and width of the icon and it’s anchor points. Once you are all done click on apply changes and Snazzy Maps will save your map Icon.

As you can see below, our new marker is now listed in the Markers field. Now you can customize your marker and how your site visitors can interact with it.

You can click on the Box Icon in green on your specific marker and this will enable you to add or edit your marker pop up box. This is great if you want to talk about this specific location or link to any reviews or blogs you may have posted about this site.

Another great feature is immediately to the left. It is a compass dial and if you click on this icon your map will load with this marker point as your map center. This is great if you want your map to load for your most recent travel destination marker for your blog visitors.

When you come to the Pop Up option for your map marker make sure you enable it. Click on the slide button at the top and onec you do that the customizable fields will populate below.

You can then customize your Pop Up. There are different themes to choose from. You can change the background color of the Pop Up and it’s font color and then below is the editing box where you can type in your information about your map marker. There are a lot of options so play around with them and find a setting that works for you.

Scrolling down farther you can then adjust the position of the Pop Up when your site visitor clicks on the map marker. You can have it open to the top, left, bottom or right of your map marker. Below that is more Advanced Settings which allow you to customize your map and how your information is shared. Once you are done customizing your map marker click on Apply Changes and your map marker is all set. You can then move on to adding an additional marker or saving your map and getting it ready to publish on your website.

To save your map simply click on the Disc Icon between your settings field and map field.

You’re almost done! It’s now time to name your Map. Once you come up for a name for your map the final step is enter in a Google Maps API Key. Most websites come with an API key that you can find in your dashboard. If not, click in the blue box to be brought to Google’s Developer page to register for an API key. You won’t be able to publish your map without it. Once you enter your API key just click save and your map is now ready to be published.

Click on the View Code Icon below the Disc Icon. At the bottom will be your Snazzy Maps html code. Just click on Copy Code to Clipboard and navigate to where you want to put it on your website and just paste it in. That’s It! you’ve now made your very own Virtual Travel Push Pin Map. Great Job!

As you can see it’s not that hard to make a really great looking virtual push pin map. And even once you are finished, you can always go back and add more map markers. Once you are done just save the map and it will auto populate the new markers on your map. No need to recopy the code and paste it in your site again. I love the fact that you can customize the map Icons to add some flare to your map that truly makes it your own. Additionally the pop up windows are great for providing details and information to your site visitors.

How to Plan a Trip With Google Maps and Saved Pins

Everyone has their own method of organizing an itinerary when it comes to travel planning.

In my earlier travel days, travel guides were my go-to. I would highlight places I would like to visit and plan my trip based on their recommendations. I would even type all the names of different places I’d like to visit and input them into an Excel spreadsheet. You’ve got to have an Excel spreadsheet if you want to be organized for your trip!

As much as I like having a colourful spreadsheet with all the information on it, it takes a lot of time to assemble a comprehensive plan.

And these days, I also rely on other sources for my inspiration. Between travel blogs, magazines, Instagram, Pinterest and word-of-mouth from other travellers and friends, it is a bit difficult to organize all the information and make something useful out of it. Chances are, a lot of the information is lost because I wasn’t able to organize the info correctly.

Enters Google Maps and saved pins . I learned this travel hack through a friend, and it has changed how I plan my trip and travel. In this post, I’ll show you how I use the saved pin feature in Google Maps to help me organize my trips .

Google Maps Pinned Trips

Typically, I use Google Maps on my smartphone as the actual map. Even when it is offline, I can still use it to navigate.

The best part about using Google Maps is that the information is almost always updated and shows you a lot of relevant information about the places you want to visit.

Moreover, it changed how I organized all my information, and I can plan even more efficiently . As a super-organized person, this is one of the best things I learned about Google Maps and saved pins.

Travel map with pins: how you can use this travel hack

This travel hack is excellent for planning small-scale trips (i.e. plan a day’s worth of activities around all the saved pins ) and large-scale trips (i.e. plan an entire trip around all the saved pins).

For small-scale planning, this is an excellent way to plan all your activities for the day .

Typically, I would pin places I want to visit and places I want to eat in a particular city. Then I look at the map to determine where all the pins are and group them according to location and proximity to other pins . The grouping of pins is how I decide what I would do for the day . Therefore, I can minimize travel time between places and maximize my actual time to see different sites . I love a travel hack that saves time!

Large-scale travel map with pins

For large-scale planning, this may happen over a period or when you are researching for your next trip.

For example, whenever I come across any travel inspiration or start planning my trip , I save a pin for each of the places I want to see on my Google Maps .

And over time, I accumulate a lot of pins all over the world. And if a particular region or country has a lot of pins, it means there are a lot of things I want to see and do in that place . So perhaps my next travel destination is where all my pins reside.

How to pin on Google Maps

You can use this travel hack on your smartphone and your computer. Chances are you will be doing most of the planning on your computer while you are at home and some planning on your smartphone while you are on the road.

Here is the detailed instruction on how to plan your trip using your smartphone:

1) Open the Google Maps app on your smartphone .

2) Search for a place either by the search feature (at the top) or manually looking through the map and looking for the location.

3) Click on the name of the place (the area where it displays the name) or “more info.” It will show you the location name, and other relevant information.

4) Look for “Save” , click it.

5) Another window will pop up and display “Save in your lists” .  Select the list you want to save your pin to :

• Starred places
• Or create a new list

Pinning tips: *If you use this feature a lot, you might have a lot of the same pins on the same list. I.e. if you pin all the local attractions and restaurants in “want to go,” they will all show up with the same colour pin. *To differentiate “local attractions” and “restaurants,” you might want to create two lists and name them “local attractions” and “restaurants”. (I started a new list called “eat” in which I save all my pins on that list for all the places I want to eat.)

6) Once your pin is saved in a list , the pin will have a checkmark and displayed as “Saved .”

7)  Also, once your pin is saved in a list, the coloured pin will show on your Google Maps .

8) You can edit your pins and lists at any time. The same goes for deleting pins and lists.

How to research and plan your trip on your computer

If you use your computer to do research, you can pin places in your lists on your computer and view them on your smartphone . Please note that you will have to sign in to your Gmail account on both your computer and smartphone for this feature to work.

The instructions for this travel hack are mostly the same on your computer and your smartphone. Follow the instructions above.

Try both Sygic and Roadtrippers. Google keeps changing Maps. First you could create personal maps in Google Maps. Now you have to do it in MyMaps. Some of the good features from Maps are not there in MyMaps. Sygic let’s you add all the sights you want to see in a city to one day and then sequences them logically. Now you can takes groups that go well together and move them to specific days. Both Sygic And Roadtrippers have information about the various sights built into the app. Both cost money, but are worth it for planning trips.

Unfortunately, I am looking for the next step in this adventure…. I need Google to provide an algorithm for once I’ve saved my pinned places around me that I want to go to, it will plan my route for me from starting point to pin to pin. My immediate example is for a city wide yard sale weekend….#Googlemaps please map out my route from sale to sale that I’ve already pinned on my smartphone to save me time & hopefully gain me an advantage! 🤞

Plot multiple locations on Google Maps

Welcome to MapCustomizer.com!

You can use this site to plot multiple addresses on a single map using Google Maps. To get started, enter an address in the form below. You can give the location a description if you like, or you can leave that field blank.

If you have a lot of addresses that you want to paste in all at once, you can use the Bulk Entry button, and paste them in, one address per line.

Once you have all the locations plotted, you can save your map and share the link. Don't worry, you can edit the map later if you need to add or remove locations.

Since the pandemic, you need to plan your trips carefully. So many things can change in no time, and people, in general, are traveling more, so advance bookings are crucial. These travel planning apps will help you plot an itinerary and ensure you don't miss out on any activities or attractions.

All the apps in this list come with maps that show all the locations you're traveling to. It's much better than using a Google Doc to write out your plan. Each app does something a little different or better than the others, so you'll likely find exactly what you're looking for in a travel planning app.

1. Scout (Web): Best Travel Planner for Cities With Detailed Map

When you're planning a trip to a new city, either alone or as a group, you will usually list many places you want to visit. With Scout, you can add these in different sections and see them on a live map, thus making it easier to figure out which places are within close distance and create an itinerary.

When you start a new trip in Scout, you'll first have to pick a city you're visiting and set your arrival and departure dates. By default, you get sections for attractions, food, and accommodations. But you can always add more custom sections. Each section gets its colored pin marker (for example, all food places will show as blue pins). You can add a place by searching for it or typing out the full address. It's powered by Google Maps, so it'll be easy to find any place.

Once you've added the points of interest, open the itinerary view to see your dates. Drag-and-drop places from the first bar to any day's itinerary. Once you add multiple places to a day, the map will automatically create a route for that day, linking all the places. You can rearrange them to find the best route to take.

You can also share your Scout trip with others, so that they can add their own points of interest and update the itinerary to create a group plan. It's also a helpful way to get tips from locals, as they'll be able to add recommendations directly to your map.

Scout also lets you publish your map or itinerary to its directory so that others can discover your helpful recommendations. And of course, you can browse the directory to find what others have recommended.

2. Puffin (Web): Find the Best Commute or Route for Your Travel Itinerary

Puffin is similar to Scout, with a few minor differences. When you create a new trip in Puffin and add a city, it automatically gives you a few recommendations for interesting and unique tourist spots , which show up as flowers on the map. Then, you start adding places of interest by searching for them in the left sidebar when set to Places, after which they'll show up as pins on the map.

Once you've added all the pins you want, switch the sidebar from Places to Itinerary. Create a new "day" and drag places from the map to that day. Puffin will automatically create a commute for you in the order of the places. Rearrange the places to get a better commute. You can also set a custom color for all the places and routes for a day.

For a detailed view of your entire itinerary, toggle the "View Full Schedule" button at the top of the sidebar. This will show a kanban board-like view of all your days. You can quickly drag and drop places between different days.

Puffin trips can also be shared between friends to build a trip collaboratively. Other users can comment on any place, so you can have a chat within Puffin on whether that place is worth going to or not.

3. Travel Trove (Web): Detailed Travel Planner for Multi-City Trips

Travel Trove is an excellent app if you go to a new country and plan to visit multiple cities. First, add the country you'll be going to, and then add the places you want to visit. For example, if you were going to Italy, search for the Colosseum and for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and add both. Then, in your sidebar, Travel Trove will automatically list them under the different cities of Rome and Pisa.

For every place you add, you can also put in a few notes about it. Travel Trove also automatically scrapes information from Google Maps like the website, timings, and address of that place.

Once you've added all the places, switch to itinerary mode (and select all the cities in your trip when prompted). Now you'll be building a day-by-day itinerary for your visit. Each day has an "accommodation" slot and more slots for AM and PM to plan your holidays. Simply drag-and-drop your places to these slots to build the plan. You can also add notes for each day.

Travel Trove lets you quickly filter places by categories you have set while adding them, like must-visit, food, accommodation, etc. You can also add Packing Notes to your itinerary to ensure you don't forget anything. Once you're done with the travel plan, you can share it with others too.

4. Travel Mapper (Web): Google Sheets Travel Itinerary With Live Map

When you're planning the itinerary for your next trip, you usually want to visualize it on Google Maps too. Travel Mapper is a custom Google Sheets template that lets you create your travel itinerary, share it with friends, and instantly add the locations to Google Maps.

Travel Mapper is simple to use. Once you download the add-on, open a new Google Sheet and go to Extensions > Travel Mapper > Start Here > Generate Template . Add the date, time, activity, location, links, costs, and any additional notes in the sheet. The sidebar shows the Google Map for your itinerary, which you can update when you make any changes.

The map is customizable. You can add color codes for different elements and filter activities to see your map differently. The Google Maps in the sidebar can also be used to discover other places of interest nearby to any location. It's one of the best Google Maps hacks for travel trips .

Travel Mapper also includes a to-do list, a packing checklist, and a favorites list to ensure you don't forget anything. You can also share your newly created sheet with friends, who can add their own locations to the map.

The apps mentioned above in this list are all made to be used on computers. However, Plip bucks the trend by being a mobile-first travel planning app so that you can plan your entire trip on your phone or tablet. Plip also has a web app if you want to use it on your laptop.

Register for an account once you create a new trip; otherwise, your travels won't be saved. You can keep the trip private or share it with a group by adding others' emails.

When you want to add a new entry, there are eight types of plans to choose from: plan (generic), flight, reservation, lodging, restaurant, event, vehicle rental, and transit. The default details to fill for any entry are the title, the location, the start and end date and time, and any notes if necessary. Certain plans have additional entries, like "Provider" in events or "Confirmation number" in lodgings.

You can quickly filter your entries by the type of plan to view them in a list. Otherwise, switch to the Map view to view all your places of interest marked on the map, and scroll through a pane at the bottom.
