Robert Trujillo Gives Update on Metallica’s 72 Seasons World Tour Coming to Australia
Posted on March 18, 2024 by Paul 'Browny' Brown
NEXT WEEK – Robert Trujillo will spend part of his 5 months off from Metallica ‘s 72 Seasons World Tour to venture back to Australia with Mike Muir , Jay Weinberg , Dave Kushner and Dean Pleasants in Infectious Grooves . The last time the band were in Australia was for the 2008 run of Soundwave Festival .
In conversation with our very own Ricky Aarons , Rob shared anecdotes about his relationship with Australian fans, which dates back to before he joined Metallica in 2003.
“I feel like the two places for the Infectious Grooves that had a real solid, loyal following was Australia and actually France… so getting back down to Australia for me is really exciting – plus I haven’t been there in over 10 years even with Metallica.”
Coincidentally, Soundwave 2013 was also the last time Trujillo was last seen crab crawling across the stage down under when the Metal Titans headlined.
Since then, the question on every Aussie fan’s lips has been – “When and will we get Metallica to Australia any time soon?”
Ricky went straight to the source and asked Rob…
“Yes, we will be there and it’s definitely going to happen. I can’t give you specific dates right now but just understand, believe and know that we’re coming down to you. It’s gonna happen. We’re excited.
Kirk and I – whenever we go to Australia, it’s so special because it becomes not just a music experience, it becomes a surf experience! We almost forget we’re on tour because we’ll be going to Bells Beach, or we’re going to Kirra, hanging out on the Gold Coast. We even went surfing in Wollongong and we went to Kalbarri on the West Coast outside of Perth.
We go on these adventures and the music is a part of that. It’s almost the soundtrack to the experience that we’re having with our friends and the ocean – and we haven’t had that in a long time – so I’m looking forward to that part of the 72 Seasons Tour cycle – having that again with Kirk.
And kicking it all off is being down there with you all in a couple weeks. It’s all happening. The party’s getting started.”
So, Metallica ARE coming. There are plans, but no dates yet. Be patient.
Their latest album 72 Seasons dropped in April 2023. Before then, Aussie fans missed out on the chance to catch tracks from their 2016 release Hardwired… To Self-Destruct following the cancellation of their 2019 tour with Slipknot .
Something tells me we won’t be waiting too much longer for a triumphant return.
Until then, catch Rob in the country with Infectious Grooves from March 30 – NEXT WEEK!

The “two night event” will be streamed live from the Arlington, Texas dates of band’s ongoing world tour.
Metallica (Credit: Tim Saccenti)
Metallica have announced a run of Australian screenings for an ambitious two-part concert film, which they plan to broadcast “live” from their performance in Arlington, Texas next month.
The band will perform over two nights at Arlington’s AT&T arena, delivering completely unique sets on Friday August 18 and Sunday 20. Both shows will be captured on film, mixed and edited in realtime, and then beamed direct to cinemas around the world as the convolutedly titled Metallica: M72 World Tour Live From Arlington, TX – A Two Night Event .
It’ll be a live broadcast for viewers in the US and some territories where the timezones align, however those of us in Australia will catch each show’s recording a few hours after they end. The first show will reach Australian cinemas on Saturday August 19, with sessions on at 5:30pm and 9:00pm AEST. Following the same formula, the second show will screen on Monday August 21. A full list of participating cinemas can be found here .
You can see a trailer for the event below:
As the title implies, these Arlington shows come as part of Metallica’s ongoing world tour in support of 72 Seasons , their 11th studio album, which arrived back in April and promptly topped the ARIA Charts . The record itself was also streamed in cinemas as part of a worldwide premiere event.

In a glowing review of the album, Kristen S. Hé wrote: “Four decades after they kicked the doors down in their early twenties with Kill ’Em All , Metallica have come full circle in a way that no one could have predicted. Lyrically, 72 Seasons is about how the struggles of one’s first 18 years can reverberate into adulthood. But musically, it’s about reconnecting with their earliest influences and finding new meaning in them once again - with no interest in simply recapturing past glories.”
Meanwhile, Metallica recently announced the production of a new documentary on their superfans, with a public casting call issued earlier this month.

METALLICA M72 World Tour kickoff: See photos, videos and setlist
And so it begins. Today (April 27th) Metallica launched their M72 World Tour in support of their new album, 72 Seasons . The two-year trek — which features two nights and two totally different sets in each city — kicked off at Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam, Netherlands, with Architects and Mammoth WVH opening the show. But the night belonged to the headliners, of course.
Metallica opened the show with a somewhat unlikely song, the epic Master of Puppets instrumental "Orion," which hadn't served as a set opener since 2011. From there, James, Kirk, Rob and Lars banged out a mix of fan favorites, deep cuts and new songs, including the live debuts of 72 Seasons' "Screaming Suicide" and "Sleepwalk My Life Away."
Check out photos, videos and the full 16-song setlist (courtesy of setlist.fm ). The tour continues this Saturday, April 29th, for the second night in Amsterdam.

Metallica Announce Worldwide Cinema Events for New Album ’72 Seasons’
By Alex Gallagher
Metallica have announced a series of in-cinema listening parties for their upcoming 11th studio album, 72 Seasons . On Thursday, 13th April, fans across the globe will be able to hear the new album in full ahead of its release the following day.
The album will be played in surround sound, with music videos for each of the song’s 12 tracks screened along with exclusive commentary from the band and “a few surprises on the night.”
Metallica discuss the 72 Seasons global premiere
While it’s not yet clear where in Australia the 72 Seasons global premiere will be taking place, you can register for updates via the website here . Tickets will go on sale next Thursday, 2nd February.
The cinematic release of 72 Seasons marks Metallica’s second collaboration with event cinema distribution company Trafalgar Releasing. The company previously worked on the worldwide cinematic release of Metallica and San Francisco Symphony’s S&M² concerts in 2019.
Metallica announced 72 Seasons back in November alongside lead single ‘Lux Æterna’. The 12-track album is the band’s first in over six years, following 2016’s Hardwired… to Self-Destruct .
“72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are,” lead singer James Hetfield said of the album’s title and concept in a statement upon its announcement.
“I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today,” he said. “Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.”
Metallica released the second single from the album, ‘Screaming Suicide’, on Thursday, 19th January.

It's not all good news for Australian fans though, as the band have already locked in their entire tour schedule for 2023 and 2024, and we're not on it.
The band were supposed to be here in 2019 for a massive stadium tour. Those dates were canned after Hetfield was admitted to rehab.
The band's last visit to Australia was as headliners of the Soundwave Festival in 2013.
72 Seasons will be out Friday 14 April.

Set List: Metallica’s M72 World Tour
To celebrate their latest album, 72 Seasons, Metallica is shaking up the format of its tour. Instead of performing one night at each venue, the pioneering metal band is doing two nights back-to-back, each with totally different set lists, different supporting acts and a strict promise to not play the same song twice in each city. They've also reimagined the structure of the stage itself. Rather than playing at one end of the stadium, they're performing on a giant, donut-shaped platform amid the fans (diehards can stand in the centre, an area aptly titled the Snake Pit). In other words: headbanging heaven. Whether you're prepping for an upcoming show or reminiscing about one you recently attended, explore the tour-inspired set list here and put yourself in the pit.

Another U.S. country star is enjoying high times in Australia. Luke Combs sees his cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” (Columbia/Sony) drive 12-7, for a career high. That’s closing in on the No. 4 peak for the original, from back in 1988. According to ARIA, Combs’ previous best was “Forever After All,” which peaked at No. 14 in 2021. Combs returns to Australia this August for a national arena tour, also produced by Frontier Touring.
The highest new release on the chart belongs to David Kushner , whose viral tune “Daylight” (Virgin/Universal) breaks at No. 6. The 22-year-old U.S. singer and songwriter previously cracked the top 40 in 2022 with “Miserable Man,” which peaked at No. 36.

Metallica is a massive project: it is a business, a brand and a strange sort of collective, and it's also a smokescreen for imposing personalities. In short, 72 Seasons reads as a kind of late-middle-age crisis, even as it suggests an opening to an adventurous future. But it still resonates with the motif of their early song "One": where ...
