About Pixies

Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential, pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement, having served as a major influence for artists like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, the Strokes, Weezer, and many more.  And today, a whole new generation of music fans has been discovering and embracing the band’s “loudquietloud” signature sound.  Quirky, catchy melodies have always been Pixies’ calling card; seven genre-defining studio albums, including the Gold-certified Surfer Rosa , and the iconic Platinum Doolittle , considered one of the all-time, quintessential alt/rock albums.  Sell-out crowds all over the globe, Pixies’ live shows are unadulterated magic, simultaneously electrifying and lo-fi.  Seventy-five minutes of the band playing anything they want, in whatever order they want, the classics and the new gems.  And no two Pixies shows are ever the same.

About Modest Mouse

Having recently completed a sold out 25th anniversary tour for their breakthrough album, 1997’s The Lonesome Crowded West and played a summer ’23 run with Pixies and Cat Power, Modest Mouse continues to prove themselves to be one of the most consistent live acts today. Modest Mouse released their highly anticipated new album, The Golden Casket, on June 25, 2021 via Epic Records. The Golden Casket heralds another new chapter in the GRAMMY® Award-nominated multi platinum band’s unpredictable evolution. Produced with Dave Sardy and Jacknife Lee in Los Angeles and in Modest Mouse’s studio in Portland, the album hovers in the liminal space between raw punk power and experimental studio science, frontman Isaac Brock explores themes ranging from the degradation of our psychic landscapes and invisible technology, to fatherhood. The twelve tracks behave like amorphous organisms, undergoing dramatic mutations and mood swings that speak to the chronic tug-of-war between hope and despair that plays out in Brock’s head.

Modest Mouse is an experimental indie rock band that was formed in Washington state, USA by Isaac Brock, Jeremiah Green and Eric Judy in 1993. The band has had a revolving cast of collaborators which include Granddady's Jim Fairchild and Smiths legend Johnny Marr.

The band takes their name from a Virginia Woolf quote. Truth be told this is quite a fitting lineage as, like Woolf herself, fewer artists give quite as convincing a portrayal of someone on the verge of a mental or nervous breakdown as Modest Mouse.

Isaac Brock’s is the man responsible for that. His voice could convincingly stand up with the likes of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Morrissey and David Bowie as one of the acquired tastes that you’ll eventually wonder how you ever did without it.

However, it’s when his guttural howl delivers his lyrics that things get truly worrying. The evocative images of everything from the endless dust bowl deserts of the American West, to the sheer expanse of space and the cold, unfeeling ocean posit how we as individual people can possibly mean anything compared to the vast canvas of existence itself. Don’t worry, there’s also some damn catchy choruses in their as well!

Catchy enough to have arguably lead the charge of indie rock into the mainstream after The Strokes and The White Stripes kicked the doors down. They have sold 1.5 million copies of April 2004’s “Good News for People Who Love Bad News”, the album which gave the world their deathless Billboard Hot 100 hit “Float On”. The follow up album 2007’s “We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank”, which featured the aforementioned Johnny Marr as a member of the band for the album’s creation and subsequent tour, was certified Gold as well.

On the surface, it would seem that they are an odd band to have Gold and Platinum albums to their name, but look closer and they always temper their experimental and haunting tendencies with solid gold hooks. If R.E.M are no more, they can be satisfied in the knowledge that there are still alternative rock bands bringing literate, profound and edgy rock and roll to arenas and concert halls the world over.

Live reviews

Much to my surprise, the band that appeared at Red Rocks last night was almost unrecognizable from the band I’ve explained above. Taking the stage in broad daylight, to a half empty amphitheater, the two original members (Brock and Green) were joined by six other musicians to deliver a powerful, loud-as-fuck rendition of “Dramamine”. Unfortunately, it would be the only selection from the 90’s, but it was enough to cause a flood of concert-goers to storm the gates and fill the remaining seats. It’s a shame so many people weren’t aware of the early start time (or Modest Mouse’s controversial position in the line-up), but Brock and his new seven-piece band were rocking a full house by the time “Be Brave” segued into “Ocean Breathes Salty”.

Shedding his denim jacket and long-sleeved button-down in favor of the t-shirt below, Isaac Brock’s intensity could be read in his clinched eyelids and quirky facial tics, as Jeremiah Green and Davey Brozowski teamed up on dual drum kits to shake the place with thunderous percussion during “What People Are Made Of”. After a good run of mostly cerebral selections, “Lampshades on Fire” was a welcome jovial moment that convinced me I needed to spend more time with an album I’d all but ignored.

Red Rocks can be a fickle bitch when it comes to weather, so nothing compares to the experience of being there, under a perfectly clear sky, on a warm summer evening. A quick glance up from our position just behind the sound stage revealed thousands of men and women dancing all the way to the horizon. Performing before the sun has a chance to set is never ideal, but if it’s unavoidable, there is no better place to do it than Red Rocks. The view from the stage is spectacular. And that spectacle could be seen in the eyes of the merry band of musicians as they swapped out conventional and unconventional instruments throughout the show.

There was so much going on that sometimes is was hard to keep track of who was playing what. Traditional rock ‘n’ roll tools were augmented with strings and keys and upright bass and sheet metal, not to mention the plethora of guitars Brock cycled through. As the night began to darken around us, a lit joint hung from Jim Fairchild’s mouth during the slightly sinister “Shit in Your Cut”; and then the Melodica came out for “Bukowski”, before a guy and girl (who I don’t think were actually in the band) introduced a pair horns during the full-on jamboree that was “This Devil’s Workplace”. Lisa Molinaro might have been the most impressive multi-instrumentalist up there though. As the night progressed, she demonstrated expertise on the viola, keyboard, and even the banjo (on “Dashboard”), while also lending her voice to backup vocals when needed.

What can't be said about a band that never fails to entertain? With a gentle yet tough sound, Modest Mouse once again brings their specific brand of music to the spotlight. And once again, it was superb to listen to.

Modest Mouse's unique brand of experimental rock is always intriguing. It's a certain style incorporating a clever blend of odd occasional instruments you won't see too often in typical rock bands. But that's the thing, Modest Mouse is far from being your average rock band. You'll hear them play violins, trumpets, hell even a banjo at times. But of course, this simply adds to the uniqueness of their sound.

Ultimately, Modest Mouse is no stranger to awesome songs to rock to, and spectacular ballads to sway to. Things can get as intense as the energizing "Satin in a Coffin", upbeat and fun as "Dashboard", or even calm and provocative as "The World at Large".

Even with their spectacular set list of amazing songs, the band truly sends it home with their frontman Isaac Brock. A genuine person, Brock finds ways to make the band's music feel as real as it can possibly be.

Though it's been 5 years since Modest Mouse has released any new material, seeing them live is more than enough to find out their past albums (with conveniently long titles) still hold strong and true to entertain. But fear not! For a band this good is always working hard to produce new things, and with Modest Mouse, one will learn waiting is common, but oh so worth it. Modest Mouse, how I love you.

Modest Mouse have been touring and performing as a band for over twenty years and their own brand of indie rock continues to delight fans as they appear as popular now as ever. Despite not receiving commercial success from their first few full lengths, when tracks picked from the early days get aired the crowd react incredibly positively.

Their 2007 LP 'We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank' reached #1 in the States so of course a large amount of this material gains best reaction from the audience. Huge singalong moments appear during 'Dashboard' and 'Fire It Up' and although these are quite polished pieces of indie on the record they are incredibly raw when performed live.

The indie rock sound becomes almost garage-like as the instrumental aspect of the live gigs feels more like a jam session than a polished performance. This is endearing though as no matter how big of a venue, the whole show feels incredibly personal and a fantastic showcase of the band's large discography.

I remember hearing about Modest Mouse back in the early 2000s, so I was surprised to see them come to my town and play a sold-out show at a local concert hall. Their live sound is a lot more raw and intense than their singles, such as Float On, which I came to love them for. Instead, they have many songs where they sound more like a garage band than a polished indie force - but that's a good thing! I was impressed by the experimentation the guitarists tried in almost every song.

Even though some of it was very noisy, the majority of the songs were all based on a powerful beat and melody so nothing was really lost. I was actually really appreciative of their live skills, especially how they changed up parts of The Good Times Are Killing Me for a live performance.

The crowd was very respectful during their less-intense songs, especially when the entire band was performing together to make a really awesome folk sound.

Modest Mouse was the supporting act for "Brand New" at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. That was surprising but worked out when we were able to leave after the 2nd Brand New "song" of shouting and headbanging. Punk? Not what I recalled from the Ramones, Clash and The Jam.

Anyway, MM was limited to about 45 min. and played with energy and enjoyment - http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/modest-mouse/2016/greek-theatre-berkeley-ca-6bff5e42.html

The voice audio was muffled and supressed in volume, awful, rendering comments from the band incomprehensible and the poignant vocal counterpoints lost. I'll look for a better context next time...

Modest Mouse is an incredible band. They are proof that amazing musicians still exist! But this was a Tuesday night show and we expected them to headline. We received a last-minute notice that was unclear and half-suggested that MM might go on first. We missed the first 45 minutes of their performance. And as well as the band played, they didn't seem to want to be there. Maybe that's because the sound was awful - something was wrong with Isaac's mic the whole time. Something was off. I can't wait to see them again but next time, I hope it will be at a different location. Oh, and we didn't even wait for Brand New to play.

I saw Modest Mouse in Santa Barbara on 5/19/18 and I was very disappointed with their performance and felt ripped off. My largest complaint is they didn't play Float On. I mean, you better have a lot of hits to skip your one-hit-wonder. I like some of their other songs but Float On is by far their best. My second complaint is the band sounds terrible live, they sounded out of sync, out of tune, and were just blasting us with ear-cringing noise. I have since seen Brandi Carlile and Norah Jones at the same venue and the acoustics were great, so Mosest Mouse just isn't talented enough to see live. Save your money

james.d.workman’s profile image

We were told by the venue "The Greek Theater" that "there will not be an opening band" and that "Modest Mouse" will start at 7:00 promptly. Well, actually Modest Mouse was the opener for a crappy band called "Brand New". Modest Mouse only played a short set and the last thing the lead singer said was "my throats dry" and they quit, never to return not even for an encore. Sound was off terribly. I spent a lot of money and drove a long ways to be disappointed in this terrible concert, and believe me, I've seen a lot of them. And the venue lied, why even send me an email with that kind of info? Get it together.

mikeherman’s profile image

Modest Mouse put on a good show. As far as stage presence goes, most of the band were just kind of standing in their spot focusing on the instruments. Only the lead singer really put on a "performance" and he was pretty over the top sometimes.

The band could have sounded a lot better if they had just turned the volume down maybe 10-20 decibels. It's not the band's fault, the venue is smaller in size and I've been to other shows there, so I know it has a history of lousy sound quality, but it was seriously loud for such a small building.

Definitely go see them!

nebulousecho’s profile image

Went to both Detroit shows and they couldn't have been more different. First show we stood one riser up main floor. The band was great. They didn't play as long as we had hoped. Only one short encore. Thursday show we were right at the stage in front of Isaac. Totally different crowd and the band fed off that amazing energy. They knocked it out outta the park! Fantastic night and two encores and just a fantastic show. So glad we went to both. Isaac's sweet sense of humour and cheeky rhetoric made me love him even more.

Pixies and Modest Mouse Announce 2024 Co-Headlining North American Tour

In the wake of 2023’s successful co-headlining run, American alt-rock superstars Pixies and Modest Mouse have announced yet another tour slated for 2024. The tour will feature singer/songwriter Cat Power as main support for the North American Spring/Summer run.

The Firefly Distillery in Charleston, South Carolina will be the tour’s official launch pad on May 31. Assuming no further tour dates are announced, Fiddler’s Green in Denver, Colorado on Sunday, June 30th is likely going to be the last stop on the tour.

Short of announcing it on their respective social media accounts, neither band has provided many details on the next nationwide tour. However, this is a tour that needs little introduction. Last year’s co-headlining tour was an incredible one. It sold out fast and many diehard fans of the bands missed out, so it’s only natural that an encore tour would happen in 2024.

General ticket sales for this tour will start on Friday, January 26 at about 10:00 am local. But if you want to get your hands on presale tickets, you have a few options. The official presale event will start on January 23 at 10:00 am EST via Ticketmaster for all tour dates noted at the end of this article.

If you aren’t able to get your tickets during the presale events, we recommend looking through StubHub once general ticket sales have gone live. You might get lucky! Plus, StubHub is backed by the FanProtect Guarantee, so you don’t have to worry about scams.

Pixies are one of the most beloved alt-rock bands in the world. The group started in the early days of grunge (or proto-grunge, depending on who you ask) in the late 1980s. The band has inspired the likes of Nirvana, Radiohead, Weezer, and many other bands that boomed in the 1990s. Pixies have released seven studio albums in their decades-long career, including the iconic Surfer Rosa from 1988 and Doolittle from 1989.

Similarly, Modest Mouse has cemented itself as a symbol of late 1990s indie rock. The band recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of their iconic album The Lonesome Crowded West with a sold-out tour.

And you can’t talk about 1990s indie rock without mentioning singer/songwriter Cat Power, whose songwriting prowess has spanned decades. Her lyricism and aesthetics have inspired the likes of Angel Olsen, Lana Del Rey, Phoebe Bridgers, and many more.

This tour sold out pretty fast last year, so we can only assume it will sell out fast in 2024. Don’t wait around to get your tickets to see Pixies and Modest Mouse live!

Pixies & Modest Mouse

The 90s rock was not only dominated by heavy metal or grunge, but it was also a blooming decade for indie rock. The grunge and Britpop movement of that decade was the result of indie rock artists who experimented with their sounds. Among the contributors to the popularity of indie rock are Pixies and Modest Mouse. Both excelled in their rock approaches. They were the masters of alternative rock during their heyday, which influenced the current alt/indie rock sound.

The "loud-quiet-loud" melodies and singing are signatures of Pixies. This way of performing their songs is a dynamic approach to rock music, deviating from the one-note and constantly high volume characterized by the genre. Their style did not end there, as they are known for incorporating male-female harmonies and for pushing forward highly expressive lyrics. With this solid style, it did not matter that they barely had support in releasing music. They dominated the charts and became one of the bands that popularized alternative rock.

In their career, which spans three decades, they came out with eight albums. Their early albums "Surfer Rosa" (1988) and "Doolittle" (1989) warmed up the scene for the alternative rock movement of the 90s. "Trompe le Monde" (1994) was their contribution to the movement. Due to a lack of mainstream support, Pixies broke up in the middle of the 90s and only came back in 2014. Nonetheless, they had made a mark, influencing the biggest acts of the genre, such as Nirvana, which used their "loud-quiet-loud" formula. When they came back twenty years later, they were celebrated by the scene. An icon was finally taking back their seat in the alternative rock pantheon. They released "Indie Cindy," which brought them success. This album led to other album releases, with "Doggerel" being their newest. Currently, the members include Black Francis, Joey Santiago, David Lovering, and Paz Lenchantin.

On the other hand, Modest Mouse benefited from the doors opened by bands like Pixies. They, themselves, shaped alternative rock. They use punk rock to create raw melodies that make a certain carefree feel. They built themselves into the 90s and emerged in the 2000s.

Their best years started with "The Moon & Antarctica" (2000). This success was followed by remarkable albums, "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" and their top charting "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" (2007).

The two alternative rock powerhouses will be co-headlining a North American tour. They will bring their angst at the Fiddlers Green Amphitheatre on June 30. Opening for them is an alt-rock legend, herself Cat Power. Buy tickets now!

In other news, Pixies frontman  Frank Black recently teamed up with The Dandy Warhols on their new single ‘Dancing With Myself’.

“I was just checking in with him, and he happened to be in Zürich. I hooked him and some of his family up with some very interesting museum tours first, then I asked him if he would play on our record,” said The Dandy Warhols’ frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor.

Pixies and Modest Mouse Reunite for 2024 Tour with Special Guest Cat Power

Pixies and Modest Mouse Reunite for 2024 Tour with Special Guest Cat Power

This year, three of the biggest names in indie rock will come together as the Pixies and Modest Mouse announce a month-long North American tour with Cat Power. Following a successful 20-show series at the end of last summer, the new tour begins on May 31 and continues through the end of June for a total of 23 new dates. This run from the titans of alternative will bring their music to some areas missed by the original tour, notably including seven shows in the South and seven new venues in the Midwest.

The 2024 run will start in Charleston, S.C., with a performance at Firefly Distillery on May 3 commencing the trio’s first Southeast series. In the region, the tour will pass through PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte, N.C on June 1, Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville, Tenn., on June 2 and Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park in Atlanta–Cat Power’s hometown–on June 4. Next, the bands trek north to Cincinnati to play The Andrew J Brady Music Center on June 5, followed by gigs at Toronto, Ontario’s Budweiser Stage and Laval, Quebec’s Place Bell on June 8 and 9. The tour returns to the states on June 11 with a show at Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion in Gilford, N.H., preceding engagements at Philadelphia’s TD Pavilion at the Mann on June 12 and the iconic Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., on June 14.

The tour hits the Big Apple on June 5 by way of Queens, N.Y.’s Forest Hills Stadium. Next, the groups progress to Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Mass. on June 16 before a Midwest run of Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights, Mich., Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island in Chicago, Surly Brewing Company in Minneapolis, Breese Stevens Field in Madison, Wis., Vibrant Music Hall in Waukee, Iowa and Starlight Theatre in Kansas City on June 18-24. The trio of acts will then jump down to Texas for appearances at Germania Insurance Amphitheater in Austin, Texas and The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas, on June 26-27, followed by Walmart AMP in Rogers, Ark. on June 28. Finally, a performance at Fiddler’s Green in Denver on June 30 will bring the tour to a close.

All of the featured acts join this tour with new momentum as veterans in the indie scene. This year, Modest Mouse will celebrate the 20th anniversary of fan-favorite album Good News for People Who Love Bad News , as well as three decades of live performance. Cat Power is currently riding renown for her 2022 full-length album covering Bob Dylan’s 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert, the third covers album in the artist’s discography. Meanwhile, the Pixies continue to reorient following the addition of bassist Paz Lenchantin, who officially replaced Kim Deal in 2016; Doggerel , the third studio album from the band’s current iteration, leans towards rough punk-inspired sounds.

Presale tickets for the 2024 tour will be available for Citi cardmembers on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. local time. General onsale begins Friday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. local time at ticketmaster .

Pixies & Modest Mouse at Forest Hills Stadium / June 14, 2024

Alternative rock has lasted longer than anyone might have predicted when the music first went mainstream in the 1990s, and so have two of its leading proponents, Pixies and Modest Mouse. Pixies formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts, and split acrimoniously in 1993, reforming with a new lineup 20 years ago. The same year that Pixies split apart, Modest Mouse formed across the country in Issaquah, Washington, later relocating to Portland, Oregon. With the release of their fourth album,  Good News for People Who Love Bad News , Modest Mouse found commercial success in 2004, the same year that Pixies was re-forming.

The music of Pixies and Modest Mouse was perhaps too quirky for mainstream audiences, but found a substantial following in the booming alt-rock circuit of the 1990s and early 2000s. Pixies’ peak years started in 1989, thanks to “Monkey Gone to Heaven” and “Here Comes Your Man,” and continued to 1996, with “Letter to Memphis” and “Head On.” Modest Mouse’s peak years were mostly from 2004’s “Float On” to 2007’s “Dashboard,” with brief resurgences in 2014 with “Lampshades on Fire” and 2021 with “We Are Between.” Pixies and Modest Mouse are alt rock royalty for their respective generations.

On their first-ever tour together, Pixies and Modest Mouse focused on their catalogs rather than on recent releases. Perhaps no longer as angry or as experimental as in their college years, the musicians of both bands did not break much ground on this tour. Rather, they played the safer route, performing what has worked for them over the decades. Avoiding their most recent albums, Modest Mouse played nothing from 2021’s  The Golden Casket , and Pixies performed nothing from 2022’s  Doggerel . Nevertheless, both bands introduced one new song, Modest Mouse with “Third Side of the Moon” and Pixies with “Vegas Suite.”

A summary of both concert performances would be similar. In recent years, both bands recorded less frequently than in their peak years, and perform more older songs than newer songs live. Their audiences have shown more receptivity to their vintage staples. At Forest Hills Stadium, both bands satisfied their audiences by playing tight, energetic, and yet nostalgic repertoires.

modest mouse tour lineup

“Can the houselights go down?” joked vocalist Isaac Brock, dressed in a dark suit and sunglasses as Modest Mouse began its set under the hot sun at 6:30 p.m. Modest Mouse began left of center with a nine-minute “The Stars Are Projectors,” with its changing tempos and Brock fiddling with distortion pedals and dials. From there, the music largely marched to a dance beat while Brock continued his eccentric, choppy singing style and distorted guitar leads. At one point, Brock sang into his guitar’s pickups rather than use his microphone. With mumbled lyrics challenging to discern throughout the performance, Modest Mouse’s one unreleased song, “Third Side of the Moon,” was perhaps the most sentimental song of the set. “I wish I had listened to every word you ever said, but you always spoke in whispers, and I’m not good at listening,” Brock sang. The set included a cover of the Cure’s “A Forest.”

Pixies’ vocalist/guitarist Black Francis (aka Frank Black), along with original lead guitarist Joey Santiago, original drummer David Lovering, and new bassist Emma Richardson, celebrated the 35th anniversary of the band’s groundbreaking album,  Doolittle , by playing eight songs from that album. Pixies arrived on stage at 8:10 p.m. with a snarling, crunchy, “U-Mass,” “Wave of Mutilation,” and a cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Head On.” At 59 years of age, Francis’ vocals were still very much intact, as he moved from softer songs like the new “Vegas Suite” to bellowing, moaning, screaming, and wailing on harsher songs – particularly “Gouge Away,” “Debaser,” and the anthemic “Where Is My Mind?” – this one was the night’s penultimate song. Francis punctuated songs with his rapid-fire stop-and-start guitar work. Richardson, most recently of Band of Skulls, took the lead vocal on a cover of Peter Ivers and David Lynch’s “In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)” from Lynch’s 1977 film  Eraserhead . The set closed with a rousing cover of Neil Young’s “Winterlong.”

Cat Power opened the concert at the unreasonable time slot of 5:30 to 6:00p.m. – most concert-goers were still in their rush-hour commute from their jobs to the stadium. Sorry we missed Cat Power’s brief performance.

Pixies and Modest Mouse triumph their alt-rock classics at Surly Field

When musicians who released their most critically acclaimed work decades prior go on tour, there are two possibilities: They will seem like their own tribute band, or they will recreate songs with the same fervor as in their younger years. Co-headlining Surly Brewing Festival Field’s sold-out show on Thursday evening, Pixies and Modest Mouse accomplished the latter. For four hours, the field full of beer, dad rock, hula hoops, and just a few sprinkles became a time capsule from the ‘90s and aughts.

Though billed as an opener and only playing eight songs, Chan Marshall’s (aka Cat Power) presence can’t be understated. With hands in the pockets of her “Cat Power Cover Tour” bomber jacket for most of the set, Marshall appeared effortless. Opening for legendary bands in front of a vast field of people is just another casual weekday evening for her. She gave off an ambiguous aura too — sipping her tea between songs, saying “muchas gracias” a few times, and clapping after her own song, “Unhate.”

Cat Power is no stranger to singing others’ songs, either. She visited St. Paul in March on her Bob Dylan tribute tour . At Surly, she made The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” all her own; the only recognizable elements were the words in the chorus. Another cover song was “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” by Kitty Wells, which Marhall dedicated to the “bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad girls and femmes,” especially sex workers. She sang, “Too many times married men think they're still single / That has caused many a good girl to go wrong,” with a fatigued tone, likely attributed to the song’s message: the way women are often scapegoats for a man’s faults. The set closed with Marshall’s salute to the crowd, instructions to “throw out your phones and take care of yourselves,” and a happy birthday sing-along for drummer Alianna Kalaba.

While most bands tour to support recent albums, Modest Mouse avoided their newest project, 2021’s The Golden Casket , altogether. (People next to me talked about how they hadn’t listened to the band’s new music). Good thing the Portland, Ore., band have a catalog full of hits and lesser known gems, plus a band lineup with the energy to keep every line alive.

Isaac Brock, the lead singer, guitarist, and only remaining member of the original band, seemed to take the performance seriously, aimlessly shuffling around stage in a suit, throwing his head back, and projecting manic facial expressions, like the way his eyes bulged with excitement during “Dashboard” when a percussionist frantically played shakers. Brock’s distorted vocal style gave way to often unintelligible lyrics, like in “King Rat.” Upon a Google search, you’ll find out a few words to the stomping track with banjo are: “Deep water, deep water / Senseless denial / I went down like a rag doll wrath of a child.” On “Fire It Up,” he abandoned the microphone to sing into his guitar strings instead.

Modest Mouse make rock music to dance to. The late ‘90s to mid-aughts tracks are for shimmying and grooving — no head banging required. “Float On,” the song you hear in grocery stores and when the bartender yells “last call,” is fitting for any situation, especially when on stage. The steady bass-drum thumps produce a beat to march in place to.

Modest Mouse did, in fact, play one new, unreleased song, “Third Side of the Moon.” Fans (on Reddit) speculate it’s a tribute to the band’s late drummer, Jeremiah Green, and/or to the late Sam Jayne from Love is Laughter. “I wish I had listened to every word you ever said. But you always spoke in whispers, and I’m not good at listening,” Brock sang, a faint note of regret in his voice. It was the most mellow, contemplative song of the set.

Like Modest Mouse, Pixies played into fans’ desires, which were the throwbacks, not the tracks from their 2022 album, Doggerel. It’s difficult to deny: Like Modest Mouse, Pixies’ music has become more bland in recent years. Led by Black Francis (aka Frank Black), Pixies instead drew mostly from Doolittle and Trompe Le Monde, and even a few from their 1987 debut, Come on Pilgrim.

The band’s energy, especially when opening the gates with “U-Mass” and “Wave of Mutilation,” made the oldies more vivid. Francis’ rapid stop-and-start guitar work kept the crowd on their toes, and his thick voice carried the weight needed to execute hits from Doolittle like “Gouge Away,” “Debaser,” and “Wave of Mutilation.” Drummer David Lovering graced his setup smoothly. On guitar, Joey Santiago even resorted to playing strings with his hat. A few months ago, Emma Richardson joined the group, taking over for bassist Paz Lenchantin. Richardson’s backing vocals, synching harmonies, and lead vocals on “In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)” gave the set an occasional, necessary lightening-up.

Pixies and Modest Mouse are excellent at what they do — which is playing the same songs they’ve been playing for the last 15 to 30 years. But there’s nothing reductive in relishing in genuinely artful music that has stood the test of time. For many, hearing the hits allows them to tap into the comfort of nostalgia.

I write this as someone who was not alive for the majority of Pixies’ album releases. I didn’t hear college radio stations play Doolittle , or read about the band as up-and-comers in music publications’ cover stories. So it’s interesting to think about whose legacy tour I’ll be venturing out into a field for in 30 years. If the show is sonically immaculate and the band members are passionately in touch with their craft like Surly’s headliners were, I’ll surely be satisfied.

Pixies and Modest Mouse impress with co-headlining show at Surly

The+co-headlining+concert+is+the+first+one+to+be+hosted+at+Surly+Brewing+Festival+Field+this+year.

Pixies and Modest Mouse’s co-headlining performances on Friday made for one of this year’s best concerts.

This was the first concert of the year at Surly Brewing Festival Field, one of the only large outdoor venues in the Twin Cities. While the crowd got rained on later into the evening, attendees did not stop having fun as they took in these memorable performances and enjoyed the outdoor venue.

Amber Owens, 42, a fan of all three acts performing, was impressed by the venue.

“I was kind of wondering how they were doing it, I saw in the pictures on the website that it looks pretty packed at whatever show that was taken at, but there’s lots of space, a decent amount of restrooms and I love that they have a lot of options for food,” Owens said.

Tristan Knoblauch, 22, said he enjoyed his first visit to the venue.

“This is actually my first time, and it’s kick-ass,” Knoblauch said. “Right next to the Surly brewery, it’s a really cool joint they got here.”

Friday night’s double bill brought out fans young and old to see these alternative-rock legends.

Modest Mouse went on before the Pixies and performed an excellent set that highlighted their most famous songs like “Float On” and “Dashboard” while also treating fans to deep cuts like “Breakthrough” and “Night on the Sun.”

As usual, Modest Mouse was impressively dynamic as a live act. Whether it was playing a slower song like “Fire it Up” or a more aggressive track like “Satin in a Coffin,” the songs they performed had a good variety of energy and vibe.

Isaac Brock, Modest Mouse’s frontman and primary songwriter, was enthralling as he expertly played his inventive, intricate guitar parts while singing and yelping with commendable energy.

It remains clear that Modest Mouse is one of the hardest working bands in the industry, as they come to the Twin Cities just about every year like clockwork and put on a great show every time.

Afterward came the Pixies 80-minute-long set, which was even better than Modest Mouse’s impressive set — a testament to how great the double-billing was.

The influential four-piece packed over 20 songs into their setlist, performing one after the other with little to no room for stage banter in between.

Except for new bassist Emma Richardson, the band had the same lineup since they gained notoriety in the late ‘80s, and it is reassuring to hear the band perform their classic songs with the same vitality and energy they did on the albums in their heyday.

Frontman Frank Black’s booming voice and frantic guitar playing gave the band’s performance an outstanding level of energy, especially for a legacy act. Richardson was great on bass and impressively filled the absence of Kim Deal by replicating her original vocal parts on a few songs.

While the audience was hyped for the whole show, certain songs generated even more excitement. Once the opening chord of “Here Comes Your Man” hit, cheers from the crowd were abundant. Throughout the band’s most famous song “Where Is My Mind?,” many concert-goers sang along and got emotional.

With the amount of songs they played and their constant level of passion and energy, Pixies remarkably blew Modest Mouse out of the water.

With two great back-to-back headlining sets from Pixies and Modest Mouse, Surly has kicked off their summer concert season with a bang.

Review: Pixies and Modest Mouse shine bright under gray-skied Surly Field kickoff concert

L ike the gray clouds that hung overhead all night, Thursday's sold-out kickoff concert in the Surly Brewing Festival Field season with the Pixies and Modest Mouse did not look too promising going in.

Both influential alternative bands from different eras — the late-'80s and early-'90s in the Pixies case, the 2000s in Modest Mouse's — each has a checkered history of being spotty live acts. There have even been times their idiosyncratic and gruff-mannered frontmen have seemed downright antagonistic and miserable being on stage.

Fortunately for the 6,000 fans who turned out Thursday despite the weather (and the occasional bad attitudes), the rain mostly held off, and the bands each rose up and put on enthusiastic performances that well represented the best of their discographies.

After a rich, neo-twangy opening set by smoky-voiced barroom balladeer Cat Power — who's back to singing more of her usual material after her exhilarating spring tour recreating Bob Dylan's 1966 concerts — Modest Mouse started out weird and winding with the nine-minute epic "The Stars Are Projectors." From there, though, things remained relatively straight-ahead for the Portland, Ore., rockers of "Float On" hitmaking fame.

Sporting a half-shaven head, Modest Mouse bandleader Isaac Brock sparked up audience participation early on as he animatedly sang a couple fan favorites, "Fire It Up" and "Baby Blue Sedan." The latter came off like a Gang of Four razor-funky tear.

Brock also seemed tickled to drop in a surprising cover of the Cure's moody oldie "A Forest" mid-set. Then he playfully plucked a banjo for "Satin in a Coffin" that prompted one audience member to yell, "More banjo!" That, too, was most unexpected.

With daylight still brightly covering the stage — Thursday was the summer equinox — the Pixies took the stage at 8:30 p.m. and went full-tilt right away. Their opening song "U-Mass" sounded extra-crunchy and snarling. That fast-burning fan favorite quickly gave way to two others, "Wave of Mutilation" and a cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On."

The Pixies' 59-year-old frontman Black Francis (aka Frank Black) not only looked eager but also appeared to be in good shape. For the most part, he proved able to still bellow, scream, wail and moan like he did on record in harrowing-sounding songs such as "Gouge Away," "Debaser" and the night's penultimate song, "Where Is My Mind?" He did alter/toy with his delivery in a few tunes with amusing results, too, like adding a vocal effect in "Planet of Sound" that sounded like a voice out of a '50s sci-fi movie.

Maybe as much as Francis, people were also paying close attention to bassist Emma Richardson on Thursday. The Band of Skulls alum only joined the Pixies a few months ago. She is the third woman to fill the position left by the band's original bass player Kim Deal (now focusing on her own group, the Breeders). Like her predecessor Paz Lenchantin, she does the pivotal role justice.

Richardson's harmony vocals in Deal-heavy tunes such as "Caribou" and "Bone Machine" were spot-on. She even took over as lead singer with resounding success in a cover of the "Eraserhead" soundtrack nugget "In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)." The other two original Pixies, guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering, remained as integral and electrifying as ever, too.

With Richardson being one big new element, the band seemingly did not want to hit the fans with too much other newness. They ignored their decent albums of recent years and stuck mostly to their 1987-1991 canon. Kind of like with the could've-been-worse weather, no one seemed to complain.
