Moon Palace Cancun Reviews: Unbiased Look at the All-Inclusive Resort

Sarah McDonald

As a traveler always looking for the perfect family getaway, I’ve journeyed far and wide, and few places have captured my heart quite like Moon Palace.

Having personally experienced its charms and skimmed through countless Moon Palace Cancun reviews, I’m convinced it’s a haven for families.

Tucked away in the heart of Cancun, this resort shines brightly against the backdrop of the Mexican Caribbean.

From kids’ clubs to gourmet dining, from pristine beaches to world-class spas, this heavenly destination ensures your family vacation is pleasant.

But like most all-inclusive resorts, this property has some flaws.

So, is it a good all-inclusive choice for your family?

Will you have a stress-free experience at this resort?

Dive in, read my in-depth review, and find out if it’s the best place to stay for your family’s Cancun vacation.

The AAA Four Diamond Award Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, Mexico, is split into three properties: Grand Palace, Nizuic and Sunrise with a combined total of 2,404 guest rooms.

Nizuic offers a laid-back atmosphere geared toward families with young children, while the bustling Sunrise appeals to adults and teens.

Nizuic and Sunrise guests can take a shuttle between both sides to enjoy everything on offer. The Grand is the most exclusive of all three: Grand guests can visit Nizuic and Sunrise but not the other way around.

The Grand has an amazing water park that opened in 2018, so book accommodation in this resort if your kids have their hearts set on the spectacular water slides.

Moon Palace Cancun Reviews: Adults Pool Night

Also, if you have older kids who want to stay in kid’s club, the Grand offers entertainment for 8-17 year-olds, while the Sunrise and Nizuic cater to the 4-12 age group only.

You can buy a day pass for the Grand if you want to check it out but don’t want to stay.

The Grand and Nizuic have family suites with interconnecting rooms for up to six (seven, if you want to include an infant 0-3 years old). All three resorts have rooms with two double beds for families who don’t mind sharing.

What We Love

  • Contemporary and luxurious rooms
  • Outstanding kids club
  • Multiple fitness centers and spas
  • 30-hole golf course, plus mini-golf
  • Multiple pools, including a giant one with waterslides, Flowrider machine, and swim-up bar
  • Over 20 restaurants and bars to choose from

What We Don’t Like

  • Pushes timeshare
  • Disappointing beaches
  • Golf cart required to reach the other buildings in the hotel
  • Not much within walking or convenient driving distance

Location and Layout

Address: Chetumal Km 340, Riviera Maya, 77500 Cancún, QR, Mexico Phone: +52 800 262 9008 Website: Moon Palace Cancun

Moon Palace Cancun, a renowned resort, combines luxury with a family-friendly environment.

Imagine your kids’ smiles as they embark on a treasure hunt at the Playroom while you enjoy a serene spa session at the Awe-Spa.

With various entertainment options, this resort caters to every family member’s needs.

Speaking of amenities, this resort is a treasure trove.

From exquisitely furnished rooms and free Wi-Fi to 24-hour room service, your comfort is guaranteed.

Moreover, with several gourmet restaurants, you can explore the world through your taste buds right from this Cancun property.

The safety measures further ensure a worry-free vacation, making Moon Palace Cancun a top choice for families.

Things To Consider Before Booking

One of the best things about booking an all-inclusive vacation is how simple it is to work out the total cost. Accommodation, food, drinks and activities are all included in the room price. At the Moon Palace hotel resorts, even the transfer from the airport is included.

However: tours, the dolphin swim, special dinners and golf will cost extra, so check the cost in advance if you plan to do these activities.

Call the resort directly to package accommodation and airfare together or to find out about any special offers going on at the moment. December and January (although not over the Christmas period) are the quiet times and you can find great discounts during these months. Packages also include some resort credit, which you can put toward any of the paid activities.

Family Interests

Before picking the resort where you want to stay, consider your family’s interests. Don’t forget, the huge water slides are only at the Grand but if your kids are too young (and you are not a fan!) the more tranquil Nizuic will be a better fit.

Check-in Time

At Moon Palace resorts, check in is available as soon as you arrive and late checkout is offered to guests staying beyond noon – in fact, you can continue to enjoy the facilities until your transportation arrives to take you to the airport.

Features and Benefits

Both the Grand and the Moon Palace resorts have plenty of fun activities for parents and kids, including:

Pools and Water Park

Kids Programs

  • Fitness Centers

Family Activities

  • Flowrider – Surf Simulator

Dolphin Swim

Nightly Entertainment

The pools, Flowrider, kids’ programs and entertainment are all included in the room price. Golf, the spa, tours and the dolphin swim are not included.

However, guests who stay for three nights or longer receive a gift of resort credit, which varies depending on the length of stay. For example, families staying 5-8 nights receive $1500 in resort credit, which can be spent on many of these activities.

A 16% service tax applies to anything bought with resort credit, which must be paid in cash or with a credit card at checkout.

Planning to spend most of your vacation in the water? The Sunrise resort features a Double Wave Simulation Flowrider – a wave pool where guests can either surf or bodyboard, depending on their skill level!

Quieter pools are also available, including a handicap-accessible pool with gazebos at Nizuic.

In total, the Moon Palace resorts (Sunrise and Nizuic) boast seven pools and six swim-up bars. In addition to the pools and the Flowrider, Sunrise also has a large water-play area for kids, next to loungers for parents.

The Grand has nine pools and a water park, including water slides, a lazy river, a wave pool and a splash zone. I particularly like the whimsical lazy river, which encircles the Playroom.

At the beach, the resorts offer guests a variety of non-motorized water sports, such as kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.

Water Park At Moon Palace Cancun

While golf is not included in the room rate, you can use your resort credit for an unlimited golf pass on the 27-hole Jack Niklaus Signature course. Individual and group lessons are available, as well as multi-lesson golf schools from certified instructors.

Moon Palace will even help you set up a tournament against other guests if you want to make things a bit more interesting.

Like the golf course, indulging in an experience in the 36 spa treatment rooms at Sunset and Nizuic resorts is not included in the room rate. Resort credit can be used on some of the treatments.

Massages, body scrubs, facials and bath therapies are all available to adults over the age of 18. Kids are not left out, however; little girls (and boys) can treat themselves to a rainbow manicure or a special hair do if they want to share in the pampering experience.

At the Grand, which is over 18s only, you can expect all the usual spa treatments plus hydrotherapy and beauty services. I like that the guys are included – there is a barbershop here too!

Finally: there is also a fish spa if you like the idea of fish nibbling at your feet.

Free WiFi is available throughout the resort.

While the beach is not the best thing about Moon Palace hotel, it is nearby and there is plenty to do. The water is warm and may be a little rough with some seaweed. There are free shuttles to other beaches if you want to explore other options.

Sunrise Playroom is the indoor kid’s club for Sunrise and Nizuic guests, featuring areas such as a fashion catwalk, a dollhouse, video games and a theater.

Parents can leave their 4-12 year-olds here for hours of supervised fun, or stay and join in. There is also a baby area for infants aged 0-3 years old.

Nizuic has another playroom, focused more on outdoor and interactive fun. Kids can play in the creativity area, at the school, market, in the video games spot or simply with toys.

Both playrooms are open from 9am until 10pm and are for kids between 4 and 12. Younger guests are welcome at either but parents will need to stay to supervise.

Divided into age groups, the Grand caters to 4-7 year olds on the Mezzanine level and 8-17 year-olds on the Ground Floor. Kids of all ages can visit both floors but must be attended by an adult if they are under the minimum age.

Fitness Center

Along with all the usual gym equipment, Moon Palace offers Pilates, yoga, spinning classes and TR.

The Flowrider at the Sunrise is a fun way to practice your surfing or bodyboarding skills in the pool, without going to the beach.

A ten-pin bowling alley with bar is on site for a fun family night out.

Families can test their gaming skills in the arcade.

Bicycles are available to rent, which is a good way to explore the properties’ lush landscapes.

The Playroom at The Grand features Mini Golf, Bumper Cars and a Lazer Maze, plus a three-floor Labyrinth.

A special mention for the dolphin swim tour, as this is on many people’s bucket list. Kids aged eight and 48 inches tall can participate. This is a great opportunity to swim with dolphins and resort credit can be used to offset the cost.

Make sure you book in advance, as this is a popular activity.

While it is perfectly possible to stay within the sprawling resorts for your entire stay, Cancun itself has a lot to offer. Take a tour to the colorful Valladolid, see the ancient Mayan walled city at Tulum or snorkel the vibrant reef: there are outings to suit every taste.

Tours are not included in the room rate, but some may be paid for with resort credit.

Entertainment is included and varies from movies by the pool to live concerts and shows. Current performances include a Fire show with fire jugglers and traditional African drumming; an homage to Michael Jackson; and a Karaoke night.

Customer Reviews

Reviews around the web are generally positive, especially about the food and the service.

Moon Palace Cancun Reviews 1

I’ve always approached family vacations with a mix of excitement and apprehension.

Will the kids have fun?

Will I find moments of relaxation?

This resort not only calmed my worries but exceeded our expectations.

On arrival, our family was warmly greeted, and the children were immediately swept into an immersive treasure hunt.

This wasn’t just a single activity – it was an ongoing adventure that continued throughout our stay, keeping the kids engaged and buzzing with anticipation every day.

Their laughter and joy were the soundtrack to our vacation.

Meanwhile, I discovered tranquil pockets of peace.

The pool, clean and inviting, became my personal haven.

I sunk into a lounge chair with a book, occasionally glancing up to see the children’s distant giggles blend with the rustling palm leaves.

Our resort experience struck the perfect balance, providing memorable experiences for the kids while allowing adults to unwind.

The ideal recipe for a family getaway.

Alternatives

The closest alternatives are all nearby in Cancun’s hotel zone.

The Grand at Moon Palace vs Moon Palace

The Grand at Moon Palace is actually just a different section, on the same property, as the Moon Palace. However, the Grand section has more choices when it comes dining an activity options. If you like the Moon Palace but want even more luxury, I recommend you upgrade to the The Grand Moon Palace .

Beach Palace vs Moon Palace Cancun

The Moon Palace’s sister resort, closer to Cancun in the hotel zone. If you like the Moon but want to be closer to the action, consider Beach Palace instead.

Barcelo Maya Palace vs Moon Palace

If beaches are your thing, Barcelo Maya Palace is just the place. Situated on the Riviera Maya, this has the white sand, palm-fringed, sapphire-water beach of your dreams.

Moon Palace vs Hard Rock Cancun

Worried there won’t be enough to entertain your teenager? Hard Rock Cancun offers Music Lab, essentially a music summer camp where kids (and adults) can jam in a band, learn to DJ, use a real recording studio or film a music video. All included in the room rate!

All the Moon Palace resorts focus on providing great service, delicious food and fun activities for families. By splitting one complex into three distinct properties, families do not have to choose between nightlife and quiet downtime – both are easily available.

This is great if you are trying to please a variety of interests within your family, or if you are planning a multi-generational trip.

I also like the sheer number of restaurants available to guests – when you are paying in advance for food, it is essential to know the dining quality and choice is top notch.

Staying at such a large complex has the advantage of diversity and choice but if you prefer smaller, boutique hotels this may not be the place for you.

The other issue is the beach, which may be disappointing compared to others in the area. The sand is fine and white but the water is not crystal clear and is a little unappealing.

You can get a free shuttle to Moon Palace’s other nearby resorts for the day and enjoy other, better beaches.

It’s also not very close to Cancun town, so you won’t be able to walk in.

Moon Palace is really good value. Regardless of the room you choose, the service and food is the same, so families get a lot for their money.

The Best Cancún & Cozumel Beaches

If you love beaches, you’ve come to the right place. Remember that beaches in Mexico are public; hotels can “claim” an area by setting out guest-only lounge chairs, but you are free to lay out your towel and umbrella wherever there’s space. Spend more time relaxing and less time searching with our roundup of the best Cancún and Cozumel beaches.

Beach in Akumal Bay. Photo © BlueOrange Studio/123rf.

Cancún’s beaches are in the Zona Hotelera and are famous for their deep, powdery white sand. Along the Zona Hotelera are numerous public access points, so people staying elsewhere don’t have to pass through hotels to get to the beach. Be aware that the surf can be quite heavy at times.

Cancun. Photo © Irina Moskalev/123rf.

  • Playa Gaviota Azul is centrally located and has parasailing and other beach activities. The high-rise hotels behind it cast cooling shadows over the beach in the afternoon.
  • Playa Delfines is at the southern end of the strip and the only beach not backed by hotels. It has the largest waves of Cancún’s beaches—you may even see a few surfers—and there’s a small Maya archaeological site just across the road.
  • Playa Marlin is near Plaza Kukulcán mall, which has numerous restaurants, shops, and even a kids club if you need a break from the sun (or each other).

Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres’s best beaches are located at the northern tip of the island. Unlike Cancún, the beaches here have virtually no surf, making them ideal for families traveling with small children.

  • Playa Norte has soft white sand and water so shallow and calm you have to wade out nearly 100 meters (328 feet) before it’s deep enough to swim. Beach gear can be rented, and there are several oceanfront restaurants.
  • Playa Sol is around the corner from Playa Norte and is also quite beautiful. Larger and nearer to the ferry pier than Playa Norte, it can get crowded with day-trippers from Cancún.

Isla Cozumel

Cozumel is better known for its diving than its beaches, but there are a few spots where you can catch some rays. The island’s west side has calm seas and several public beach clubs, while the east side has scenic windswept beaches and heavy surf.

  • Playa Palancar is the most low-key of the west-side beaches, with a well-maintained beach area and a restaurant serving tasty meals.
  • Playa San Francisco is another fine westside beach, with a string of large beach clubs. It’s good if you want a bit more action than the scene at Playa Palancar.
  • Playa Chen Río is one of several beaches on the east side, but is the only one protected from the waves so you can swim. It can get crowded on weekends, but it’s wide, so a quiet spot always can be found. A lone restaurant serves pricey meals—do like the locals do and bring your own eats.
  • Isla de la Pasión is a private island off Cozumel’s north coast, and the only practical way to get there is by package tour. But the beach is gorgeous—Corona actually filmed one of its commercials there—and the open bar and open buffet make it a worthwhile splurge.

Isla Holbox

Aerial view of Isla Holbox's miles of beach, with the mainland of the Yucatán Peninsula in the distance.

Isla Holbox’s scenic main beach, Playa Norte, extends several miles and is backed by a low coastal forest.

  • The sand and water at Playa Norte aren’t as classically idyllic as, say, Tulum, but are still lovely and striking in a Robinson Crusoe-type way. Plus, a long sandbar has emerged just offshore; covered in an inch or two of water, it’s perfect for wading and cooling off. (Here’s hoping it sticks around for a while!)

The Riviera Maya

If you’re staying at a resort in the Riviera Maya, you’re likely to have a great patch of sand just steps away. But there are plenty of great ones accessible to all travelers.

Riviera Maya. Photo © Tono Balanguer/123rf.

  • In Playa del Carmen, Playa Tukán is a long swath of blond sand with medium surf. Two beach clubs here rent chairs and umbrellas, and offer meal service and even small swimming pools. There’s also plenty of open sand, if you’d rather just lay out a towel.
  • South of Playa del Carmen, Xpu-Há is easy to miss but rewards those who find it with a broad white-sand beach and mellow surf. There are fewer services here than elsewhere—and fewer people, too—but a couple of hotels and restaurants make Xpu-Há a great beach getaway.
  • Farther south, the town of Akumal has a long curving public beach with great snorkeling. Hotel guests can use beach chairs; others should bring a towel and umbrella of their own.
  • For maximum isolation, Playa Xcacel has a small parking lot, simple restroom area, and over a mile of gorgeous white sand. (There’s a small freshwater cenote, too.) Located between Xel-Há ecopark and Chemuyil community, Xcacel is a sea turtle nesting ground, so it’s off-limits to construction. Good for turtles—and beach lovers, too!

Tulum and the Costa Maya

Two coconut palms frame a perfect Caribbean beach in Tulum, Mexico.

Many people consider Tulum’s beaches to be the best of Mexico’s Caribbean coast. It’s hard to disagree with white sand, gentle azure surf, and a backing of palm trees and bungalow-style hotels. Costa Maya beaches are slightly less jaw-dropping (though Mahahual gets close) but make up for it with stellar fishing, kayaking, snorkeling, and diving.

  • Tulum’s northern beaches are easier to reach if you’re not staying at one of the hotels, with several public access points and affordable restaurants and beach clubs.
  • Tulum’s southern beaches are truly stunning, plucked from a postcard. Hotel guests have easy access, though nonguests can park just south of Punta Piedra and walk down the shore. Bring your own supplies or plan to eat at one of the small hotel restaurants to reach the beach.
  • Mahahual has a lovely stretch of beach right in town, with warm white sand and calm turquoise water. A pedestrian-only walkway hugs the shore, and there’s great diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking.

  • Not much within walking or convenient driving distance
  • Dolphinariums are considered  controversial attractions

Bottom Line

Moon Palace Cancun is a gigantic family-friendly all-inclusive luxury resort along Cancun's Riviera Maya, about a 15-minute drive from the airport. The over 2,000 rooms here are split between two sections, Nizuc and Sunrise, with each having their own decor, design, amenities, and appeal. A stellar all-inclusive package covers food and top-shelf liquor at the nearly two dozen restaurants and bars, as well as room service. Multiple outdoor pools with swim-up bars, kiddy pools and a kids’ club, tons of daily activities and sports facilities, a full-service spa and fitness center, and 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course provide ample to keep guests of all ages busy. Unfortunately, beaches in this area of town -- often smelling of and strewn with seaweed -- are far less idyllic than those in the Hotel Zone. But if you aren't bothered about the beach, this is a stellar value. For a kid-friendly hotel in the Hotel Zone, consider the Hard Rock Hotel Cancun .

Oyster Hotel Review

What are the design and scene like at the moon palace cancun, this massive property has two sections, a plethora of features for kids and adults, and an often-disappointing beachfront setting..

moon travel cancun

Entrance to the massive Moon Palace Cancun compound is just off the highway. After passing through a small guard gate, guests will have to travel over a mile to reach their designated lobby. There are two sections at the Moon Palace Cancun resort – Nizuc and Sunrise – and the property sits adjacent to 2017-opened The Grand at Moon Palace , which has access to all facilities at this hotel. However, Moon Palace Cancun guests will have to purchase a day pass to visit The Grand, where there’s a kid-friendly water park. Note that the distances between properties can be far, so guests should be prepared for either a long walk or a chauffeured ride in a golf cart.

With its massive marbled lobby, giant pool, and hefty assortment of other features, Sunrise is the largest of the three sections. The vibe here is always buzzing and people are everywhere, giving it a bit of a party atmosphere. Next-door Nizuc is the older section and has its fair share of people filling the chic and stylish spaces, but it's not quite as bustling, and the vibe tends to encourage strolling or lounging. Its glamorous and gorgeous lobby isn’t tough to look at either. Travelers wanting a more modern and luxe stay should opt for The Grand at Moon Palace.

While there are dozens of features, from large outdoor pools with swim-up bars to buffet and a la carte restaurants to daytime and evening activities, many guests have been disappointed by the beach. Like many resorts in the Cancun area, the Moon Palace is heavily affected by seaweed, which has a foul odor and often prevents travelers from swimming in the ocean. Resorts in Cancun’s Hotel Zone tend to have better beaches.

Where Is the Moon Palace Cancun Located?

It sits along a quiet section of the riviera maya just a 15-minute drive from the cancun airport, but with disappointing beaches..

Historically, the Riviera Maya begins farther south down at Playa del Carmen, but for want of tourism, areas several kilometers on either end of the famous coastline's traditional stretch are being marketed as part of the Riviera Maya's tourist route. The Moon Palace Cancun falls into this boundary line, even though it is in Cancun and just a 15-minute drive from Cancun International Airport. Away from the main drag of the city's Hotel Zone, Moon Palace Cancun is located just off the 307 freeway about a 25-minute drive south from the popular tourist area.

While its location certainly gives it the space it needs and a private, secluded atmosphere without any direct neighbors, the hotel unfortunately sacrifices the idyllic stretch of beach and perfect Caribbean blue waters found slightly to the north. Like at many Cancun resorts of late, the beach here suffers from foul-smelling seaweed that often restricts travelers from swimming in the ocean. Because the Moon Palace's closest lobby is around two miles from the hotel's street-side entrance, the hotel is not walking distance to anything off-site. Likewise, there aren't really any restaurants or bars within easy driving distance, but you will be 30 minutes closer for day trips to Tulum , Coba, Xel-Ha Park, and Playa del Carmen .

What Are Rooms Like at the Moon Palace Cancun?

Spacious and luxurious rooms have furnished outdoor spaces, free minibars, and two-person whirlpool tubs..

moon travel cancun

Spacious rooms across the board tend to be fairly consistent in terms of style and comfort, offering contemporary decor and upscale amenities. Standout features include double whirlpool tubs, liquor dispensers with top-shelf brands, smart TVs, and furnished balconies. Free daily restocked minibars, coffeemakers, free Wi-Fi, CHI bath amenities, hairdryers and straighteners, laptop-sized safes, and sitting areas also come standard. Bathrooms have showers, bathrobes, and slippers as well.

A variety of textures and materials are represented in the spaces, such as sleek dark woods, shiny marble floors, metals decor accents, and decorative headboards of leather, wicker, or other luxe materials. Swim-Up Suites have direct pool access from their balconies. Larger suites are also available. The Presidential Suite at Moon Palace Cancun has two bedrooms, a dining and bar area, living room, large outdoor terrace, and espresso machine.

What Features Are Available at the Moon Palace Cancun?

Extensive features include outdoor pools with swim-up bars, a full-service spa, daily activities, and live evening entertainment..

moon travel cancun

When it comes to features, the Sunrise section of Moon Palace Cancun reigns supreme, with around a dozen restaurants and bars and a huge pool that has a Flowrider machine, kids' water park, and swim-up bar. There are three bars and four restaurants in the pool area alone. It's worth checking out the beautiful, Amalfi-style stained glass ceiling at Italian restaurant La Gondola. Sunrise is also where guests can try to make par on the mini-golf course, sip cocktails at the Noir nightclub or Sky Bar, rub elbows at the contemporary convention center, and play a game of tennis while the kids run loose at the stellar kids’ club.

The chic and elegant Nizuc section is home to a spa, smaller kids' playroom, and the resort’s swim-with-dolphins Dolphinarium area. There’s also a nice-sized pool here and beachside gazebo. Things feel a bit theme-y in the UK-styled Pub, but there’s also a glam Lobby Bar, and caffeine and fresh-baked goodies at the Sweets and Coffee café -- or guests can check out on the several other bars and restaurants here. Go to town guilt-free since the Moon Palace’s bigger gym is here, too.

If you are looking for sand traps instead of sand castles, there’s a golf and spa area of the resort about a 10-minute golf cart ride from Sunrise. The 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course is well-regarded. The attached spa is large, housing a few lounge spaces, a big hot tub, sauna and steam room area off the locker room, and luxurious treatment rooms.

Moon Palace Cancun weddings are popular, and both wedding and honeymoon packages are available.

What's Covered by the All-Inclusive Package at the Moon Palace Cancun?

The comprehensive all-inclusive package covers all food and beverages..

The Moon Palace Cancun all-inclusive package covers food at the buffet and a la carte restaurants, 24-hour room service, and both non-alcoholic beverages and top-shelf liquor at the bars. The kids’ club Playroom, daytime activities, live evening entertainment, and non-motorized water sports are also included in the room rate.

What's the Beach Like at the Moon Palace Cancun?

The beach here is largely disappointing, due to foul-smelling seaweed..

All resort sections are set against the sandy shores of the Riviera Maya. Unlike beaches off Cancun’s Hotel Zone, beaches here are often thick with seaweed, and can give off a slight sewer smell (from the seaweed build-up and trapped water). There is also no turquoise ocean here, and the water closest to shore looks brown. Due to this, the pools are often more packed than the loungers and cabanas along the beach.

Is the Moon Palace Cancun Family-Friendly?

The property has one of the best kids’ clubs in all of cancun, in addition to family-friendly leisure facilities..

moon travel cancun

The Moon Palace Cancun Sunrise Playroom kids’ club is for children ages 4 to 12, and it offers a number of separately decorated and designed rooms with different purposes, giving kids a buffet of imaginative options to keep them entertained. Some of our favorite spaces include the mini racetrack complete with kid-sized small plastic cars to take for a spin; the glamorous and glizty, all-pink beauty salon/fashion runway room; the arcade; the art room; and life-sized doll house room -- just to name a few. There's also a snack bar, outdoor playground, and mini-theater.

The 10 Best All-inclusive Resorts in Cancun

Plan your getaway with our list of editor-loved and T+L award-winning properties.

Katherine Alex Beaven is a Los Angeles-based travel, food and drink, and culture writer.

moon travel cancun

Cancún is one of the most visited destinations in Mexico, enticing travelers with its warm turquoise waters, soft beachfront, towering resorts, and lively entertainment. Only a 15-minute hop, skip, and short drive from Cancún International Airport, the 14-mile Hotel Zone drag has been welcoming millions of sun-worshipping tourists for decades.

This coastal hotspot may not have invented the all-inclusive resort, but it has certainly shaped expectations. With more than 1,100 hotels in the Cancún area today, competition is fierce, and the all-inclusive resort reigns as king. Whether you’re looking to soak up energy in the heart of the Hotel Zone or crave a relaxing beach escape in a more secluded spot down the coast, our picks for the best all-inclusives in Cancún — a combination of T+L award winners and editor-loved properties (see our full methodology ) — have standout service, notable amenities, a range of activities, and delicious food and drink that will keep you coming back for more—all set against a screensaver-worthy backdrop to boot.

Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun

Also available to book at Hotels.com .

Rates include a guided journey through one of Cancun’s best hydrotherapy thermal circuits.

All-suite rooms start out smaller here compared to the other resorts on the list.

Le Blanc is one of Cancun’s all-inclusive crown jewels where the impeccable personalized service and luxurious digs often leave guests feeling like royalty. Its picturesque beachfront location, full-service Mayan spa, and reliably good food and drink options make it a repeat favorite. Five a la carte restaurants, the casual health-inspired cafe, and top-shelf drinks are included. The superb butler service means you’ll barely have to lift a finger unless you’re taking advantage of any of the included activities like aquatic spinning (think Peloton in the pool). Rooms at this 260-suite property start on the small side at 429 square feet, but you’ll still have plenty of room to stretch out — especially in the double-size marble whirlpool tub. The stocked minibar, Lavazza coffee machine, in-room premium liquor dispensers, and 24-hour room service are big perks. Le Blanc’s nightly rates cover nearly everything, sometimes even airport transfers, and they handle dietary restrictions like pros. It’s the little things that landed this five-star all-inclusive on our World’s Best list in 2021 and 2022. Le Blanc guests have access to all Palace properties’ sister resorts, which include the Moon Palace complex, Playacar Palace, and Cozumel Palace (transportation not included).

Nina Ruggiero, Editorial Director

Le Blanc changed what I thought of Cancun all-inclusive resorts. The dining felt elevated, the spa felt luxurious, and my room came with a private ocean-view jacuzzi. It's adult-only, and while the swim-up cocktail bar has a bit of a party vibe, it's overall serene compared to most Cancun scenes.

Hyatt Ziva Cancun

The expanded kids’ programming is included and covers a wide range of ages.

Even with adults-only options, this is first and foremost a family-friendly resort.

Hyatt Ziva Cancun has seen a few changes since its 2016 debut on the tip of Cancun’s stunning Punta Cancun peninsula. The new adults-only spaces, extended kids’ club programming for up to age 19, and fine-tuning of its restaurant and bar options have only made it better. All 17 restaurants, bars, and lounges, from the onsite microbrewery and tequila bar to fresh ceviche and tableside teppanyaki, are covered in the nightly rate. We love the multi-generational, choose-your-own-adventure vibe here at this 2021 World's Best award winner. Days are loaded with activities to fit a variety of energy levels and age ranges, whether you’re spending it out on the beach, by the pool, or in the spa. The 547 contemporary suites at this resort vary between 483 to 4,381 square feet and don’t skimp on important details like daily restocked minibars, blackout drapes, Bluetooth speakers, and 24-hour room service. Turquoize Tower upgrades flaunt high-floor 270-degree views, extras like butler service, and access to adults-only dining, bar, and pool areas.

Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa, Mexico

Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa

The resort’s casual, beachy vibe and unique octagonal-shaped rooms are a standout.

Fully uncovered exterior walkways are great until the weather isn’t.

Don’t let Dreams Riviera Cancun’s location in the former sleepy fishing village of Puerto Morelos fool you—the six onsite bars, including a swim-up and a beach bar, keep guests’ glasses full, and the poolside entertainment team goes big. Originally opened in 2009, the most recent 2023 renovation added an all-ages arcade and kids’ waterpark, and it upgraded the Italian specialty restaurant and its private dining wine cellar. Between the six a la carte restaurants, main buffet, snack bars, and 24-hour room service, you’ll be well fed. The overall vibe tows the line between contemporary, casual, and tropical resort with woven rattan accents, marble floors and bathrooms, and several thatched-roof palapas. Some of our favorite details from the 486 rooms are their massive mirrors, standalone tubs, frond fan blades, and unique octagonal shape, but fair warning, light sleepers should pack a good pair of earplugs . There’s no up-charge for premium alcohol, but expect to pay extra for beach cabana rentals, spa services, and tips.

Taylor Fox, Updates Writer

I stayed here for a week. This resort gives you a bit of everything. I loved the gorgeous spa and high-end gym that was easy to access, and the salon is equipped with some of the most knowledgeable stylists I've encountered at an all-inclusive.

Atelier Playa Mujeres

Impeccable service and the variety of food and beverage options don’t disappoint.

This resort requires guests to wear the dreaded all-inclusive bracelet.

The adults-only Atelier Playa Mujeres may have only opened in 2018, but that didn’t stop this eco-friendly beachfront resort from getting a little work done on its 593 suites just three years later. Whether you book into one of the 742-square-foot entry-level junior suites or splurge on the over 3,000-square-foot top-level Inspira suite, you’ll find a perfect balance of sophistication and style at this 2023 World’s Best hotel. We especially like the oceanfront views, comfy beds, and elegant moss-green marble bathrooms. Inspira upgrades come with amenity perks like in-room personalization menus, exclusive Inspira-only areas, butler service, and several discounts and freebies. The nightly rate covers all 13 restaurants and 12 bars, including the reservation-only Maria Dolores by Edgar Nunez. The stunning 14,000-square-foot pool, 18-hole golf course, tri-level spa, and decked-out TechnoGym fitness are big draws, while guided onsite art walks and the pup-friendly PetIt program add even more value. When it comes to child-free all-inclusive resorts in Mexico , this is the cream of the crop.

Excellence Playa Mujeres

Excellence Resorts

Gorgeous suites that have extensive outdoor areas and swim-up options.

A dress code is enforced—at restaurants and some bars.

Excellence Playa Mujeres is a 450-suite beachfront property for adults only. This 2022 World’s Best winner impresses with generous marble-laden suites that start out at over 800 square feet and there isn’t a bad room in the house. We love that upgrades don’t cost a fortune (far from it) but pay off in droves with incredible terraces, swim-up access, and rooftop plunge pools. Nine restaurants feature global cuisines and details like hand-rolled pasta and oceanfront seating, and premium, well-crafted cocktails and drinks are served from morning to late night. This resort is the perfect place to sharpen skills at a handful of niche activities, from archery and air rifle shooting to water polo and beach soccer, all included. There are several perks if you upgrade to the Excellence Club level with some favorites being access to all seven pools and six whirlpools, a club-only beach area (no hunting for loungers), and in-room extras like fresh flowers and small snacks delivered daily.

Moon Palace Cancun

Kids under 17 stay and eat free, and everyone has access to a truly superlative number of activities and amenities.

You’ll need a map and a good sense of direction to navigate this massive property—and you’ll be sharing with up to 10,000 other guests.

For those looking to go big or go home, you can’t get much more behemoth than Moon Palace Cancun. This multi-resort complex has an expansive 123-acre beachfront location and a staggering 2,483 rooms — and not an inch is wasted. Chances are, if there’s a resort feature you’re hoping for, it’s here, from a lazy river to a bowling alley and even made-to-order baby food and a dedicated kids spa area with treatments. The spa itself is over 76,000 square feet, there are 19 pools, an incredible waterpark for all ages, and there’s a 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. You may worry that a resort this big has spread itself too thin, but Moon Palace manages to deliver over and over, whether it’s with good food, top service, or quality experiences. If you’ve got dietary restrictions, know they have special allergy and vegan protocols in place to keep you safe. We also like that this resort recognizes its impact on the environment and local community and puts at least 10 percent of its profits back into the community and toward sustainability initiatives. They also host local artisan markets and source roughly 80 percent of their food locally.

Live Aqua Beach Resort Cancun

The resort appeals to all five senses through its design, amenities, and personalization—and they’ve got a temazcal.

Food can be hit or miss, and there’s an extra cost for premium food and drink options.

Live Aqua Cancun is an adults-only resort with a sophisticated aesthetic and lively location. Originally debuting in 2004, then remodeled and reintroduced in 2007, Live Aqua’s most recent 2019 renovations brought the all-suite total up to 371 and added modern touches like surround sound and smart controls. Aqua aims to appeal to all five senses, from its seven international a la carte restaurants and colorful beachfront views to the seven pools set at different temperatures and in-room personalization menus. The prime Hotel Zone location yields expectedly smaller rooms than others on this list, though don’t worry; there’s enough space to unpack and spread out and enjoy the gorgeous polished marble floors, plush but firm beds, Molton Brown bath products, stocked minibars, automated curtains, and Nespresso machine. Daily activities, themed nights, and a wellness area with a 12-room spa and Mexican temazcal.

Hyatt Zilara Cancun

Hyatt Hotels

Also available to book via Expedia .

Every room features an outdoor hammock with a view.

The resort is adults-only with a minimum age of 18.

Hyatt Zilara sees a high guest return rate, which we credit to the resort’s friendly staff, fun but not fratty vibe (a feat for a Hotel Zone property), and consistently good food and beverages. That isn’t to say that this adults-only resort doesn’t know how to throw a party. Nightly entertainment includes big live show performances and themed parties. We love the lively vibe of these events, but we’d be lying if we said they weren’t notably loud. During the day, guests can be found lounging in cabanas at the beach or beachfront pool or sweating it out in the full-service spa’s sauna or at a fitness class. Water sports and land sports are included, as are five of the six international a la carte restaurants and premium drinks at all five of the bars and lounges. Our favorite part of each room? Curling up on the balcony hammock to soak up ocean and sunset views. You can also expect each of the 310 suites to come with a pillow menu, Nespresso machine and (slightly unimpressive) minibar, and discreet room service delivery box. Fancy a plunge pool? Upgrade for swim-up rooms with sunken loungers and split-level layouts.

Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Cancun

The resort design optimizes its beautiful beachfront location and views from the rooftop infinity pool are stunning.

Required a la carte reservations and dress codes can feel restrictive at times.

Garza Blanca Cancun is a modern all-inclusive that opened with a beachfront on Playa Mujeres in 2022. Bright and breezy spaces, views at every turn, and crisp, contemporary design dominate here with gleaming, polished marble and glass, high ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling picture windows that kick the beachfront setting and level of luxury up a notch. That said, an evening dress code is required at some restaurants and bars, and guests are required to wear all-inclusive bracelets. The international a la carte restaurants get much praise, but it would be a mistake to miss out on the food hall buffet or even the beachside food truck. Guests can expect creative craft cocktails, 452 spacious suites with private terraces and modern freestanding tubs, and a large spa with an extensive hydrotherapy circuit. Accessible rooms are available, and the resort’s unique Family Program includes connecting rooms, free stays for children, daily club activities, and special take-home kids amenities. For adults, the adults-only rooftop area is a one-stop oasis with food, drinks, and an infinity pool with unforgettable views.

Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun

This resort is notably LGBTQ-friendly as reviewed by travelers.

Some restaurants have dress code requirements.

Travelers looking for a more traditional Cancun all-inclusive experience will appreciate the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun’s sprawling but approachable layout and key waterfront location at the peninsular tip of the Hotel Zone. The 1990-built property has gone through several renovations that have modernized decor and amenities in the 602 suites, updated offerings at the 20,000-square-foot kids club, and added several restaurant concepts, including a Tuscan dinner concept complete with live Italian music in 2023. From grabbing cocktails at the lagoon pool’s swim-up bar to slurping down oysters at the raw bar, this resort scores high on its food and drink options. If your vacation vices lean more toward indulging in spa treatments, rounds of golf, or sun worshiping, well, you’re covered here, too. Picture window views of the ocean or pool, deep-soaking marble tubs, and the daily restocked minibar are standard standout features, with upgrades adding large terraces and plunge pools.

Know Before You Go

Consider amenities in addition to beaches.

The beautiful beaches of Cancun can fall prey to the seasonal curse of sargassum seaweed. These large heaps of stinky seaweed wash ashore, sometimes in droves, between April and August. This is a natural occurrence that resorts have no control over. Many beachfront resorts do their best to keep the beach clean, but it’s not always possible. All the more reason to choose a resort with plenty of onsite amenities, like pools, spa features, and activities, right?

Plan around hurricane season

The Yucatan Peninsula is located along Mexico’s hurricane belt, and reservations booked during hurricane season (June through November) may be affected by bad weather. During this time it’s possible to experience heavy rains that can last from just minutes up to days. Be sure to check your resort’s hurricane policy before booking, be prepared with travel insurance and an emergency evacuation plan (just in case), and be aware that there is a chance your beach vacation may have to be postponed.

No Spanish? No problem

Almost everyone you’ll come across will speak English. Cancun is a tourist hub and speaking conversational, if not perfect, English is required for any tourist-facing position. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t practice your Spanish before you arrive—or while you’re here! It never hurts to learn a few key words and phrases in the language of your destination.

How We Chose These Hotels

It’s not easy sifting through the hundreds of all-inclusive hotels in Cancun. Several hotels made the list because they've earned a coveted spot in our annual World's Best awards, in which hundreds of thousands of T+L readers vote on their favorite hotels across the globe (see the 2023 winners here).

In addition to those award-winning properties, the author of this article, Katherine Alex Beaven , contributed her expertise. She has personally visited dozens of properties in the area, and for this article, she also consulted colleagues who frequent Cancun and pored over hundreds of reviews. She focused on the quality of the guest experience, from check-in to check-out and every minute in between. Well-designed spaces, thoughtful touches, and functional details were taken into account, along with location, value, and amenities. For this list in particular, the quality of the resort’s food and beverage offerings, the diversity of onsite activities, what is included in the rate (and what’s not), and the level of service were all taken into account. In her 10 years of experience as a travel writer, Beaven has reviewed more than 500 hotels around the world.

And finally, as with all our hotel roundups, editors ensure all hotel recommendations we make align with our core T+L Hotel Values .

Escape Cancun crowds: 8 quieter Mexico beach towns for your next vacation

moon travel cancun

  • Cancun is one of the world’s top tourist destinations, but there are a plethora of other, less popular Mexican beach towns just waiting to enchant travelers.
  • From charming surf towns to snorkeling along sea turtles, travelers should explore the diverse beauty of the rest of Mexico’s expansive coastline.
  • With no shortage of warm weather, sun and surf throughout Mexico, these destinations offer a quieter, less crowded experience.

Cancun reigns as one of the world’s top tourist destinations, and there’s no mystery why. The Caribbean Sea-adjacent locale has a myriad of sprawling beach resorts, clear turquoise waters and a vibrant nightlife. In 2023, Cancun welcomed over 21 million tourists .

While Cancun is beautiful and lively, there are a plethora of other, less popular Mexican beach towns just waiting to enchant travelers. From charming surf towns to snorkeling along sea turtles, travelers should explore the diverse beauty of the rest of Mexico’s expansive coastline.

With no shortage of warm weather, sun and surf throughout Mexico, these destinations offer a quieter, less crowded experience than enjoying Cancun alongside 30 million other tourists.

Far Homes spotted hidden gems across Mexico’s coast, looking at the destinations’ natural beauty, recreational activity offerings, safety and accessibility to learn and experience the local culture. To assess each town’s safety ratings, Far Homes released a report looking at crime statistics from data by the Executive Secretary of the National Security System. While some of these spots are known to attract tourists, they’re nowhere near as saturated as Cancun or Cabo.

Here are eight under-the-radar beach towns in Mexico to consider adding to your travel list.

Cancun without the crowds: Meet Isla Mujeres, a quieter Mexican getaway

Located about an hour from Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita perfectly balances bustling and mellow energy. “Sayulita is a fun little town full of eclectic restaurants and shops,” said Gene Alvarez, a local real estate agent from Net Real Estate who works with Far Homes. “With several great surf breaks and a laid-back atmosphere, it attracts surfers, backpackers, and bohemians.” It’s easy to get around for travelers not well-versed in Spanish, and many people rent mopeds or golf carts to cruise around the town. While the main beach in town, Playa Sayulita, can be crowded for both surfers and beachgoers, travelers can head north to the neighboring village of Playa San Pancho for quieter, more serene beaches.

Fly into Cancun Airport and head about three hours south to Akumal for a quieter escape from Cancun and Tulum. Scoring high with Far Homes for its natural beauty, Akumal has become more known among travelers for its pristine beaches and lush jungles. Must-dos in Akumal include snorkeling with sea turtles in the clear waters of the marine protected area of Half Moon Bay and swimming in the enclosed cenote Yal-Ku Lagoon, said local real estate agent Rob Kinnon from BuyPlaya. Just 15 minutes south is the famous Tulum Archaeological Site, where Mayan ruins made of limestone sit perched upon a cliff.

Puerto Escondido

Located in the Pacific Ocean-facing state of Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido is a rising destination for its world-class surfing breaks and easy-going lifestyle. Travelers can fly directly to Puerto Escondido International Airport, less than two miles from town. “From the trendy bars of Zicatela to the laid back vibes of La Punta, the town has something for everyone,” said local real estate agent Jon Ferioli from Bayside Real Estate. “And with nods from international magazines, Puerto Escondido is quickly becoming the go-to spot for digital nomads seeking inspiration and connection.” The town scored high for its activities offerings. Even if you don’t want to brave the often powerful waves, travelers can go on crocodile boat tours through the mangroves, witness the glowing bioluminescent plankton in two of the nearby lagoons at night, or visit Casa Wabi, a contemporary art and architecture museum.

Isla Holbox

If you’re really itching to escape the crowds, head to Isla Holbox, a 26-mile-long car-free island located right off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. While the island has grown in popularity and therefore development, it still offers travelers a secluded beachside retreat. Travelers can wander the streets, which are paved in sand, barefoot or in golf carts – the main mode of transportation on the skinny island. To get there, travelers fly to Cancun International Airport then travel by car for two hours to Chiquila to board a 15-minute ferry ride to the island. While it may take more effort to visit Isla Holbox over Cancun or Cabo, it’s well worth it. The resort town ranks high for natural beauty, including bioluminescent lagoons and whale shark tours, and safety.

Those seeking out the sun and sand will find Huatulco to be paradise with its 36 beaches and nine bays, and endlessly sunny weather. Less developed than Puerto Vallarta and Cancun, the small resort town offers activities like kayaking, hiking waterfalls or scuba diving, and is bordered by the Huatulco National Park. Of course, travelers can just relax on the beach as well. To get there, travelers can fly into Bahias de Huatulco International Airport, a short hour-and-a-half flight from Mexico City. “The international airport is only 10 minutes away, and the area attracts tourists looking for a more authentic Mexican experience and small-town feeling,” said Brent May, founder and CEO of Bayside Real Estate.

Located on the Pacific coast in Oaxaca, Zipolite’s former hippie culture is still retained with its laidback, rustic charm and a focus on eco-tourism. The community evolved around a hippie beach culture and has now become known for its excellent restaurants, bars, trendy boutique hotels, and low-key party culture,” said May. Over an hour’s drive from Puerto Escondido International Airport, the town scored high for activities and safety, and there are not as many tourist traps as in the more developed parts of Mexico. The massive Zipolite beach remains Mexico’s only legal nude beach, but there’s also a western end known for surfing and a small eastern bay called Playa del Amor that's known among the LGTBTQ+ community. “

This sleepy fishing village of Mahahual has grown in popularity among travelers, thanks partly to cruise ships. However, it still has much to offer travelers, ranking high for culture and safety by Far Homes. “This charming coastal town is best explored by bicycle,” said Gaby Ortiz, sales manager at Maya Ocean, a local real estate broker. “As you pedal through its scenic streets, you can lose track of time, immersed in the natural beauty and tranquility of your surroundings.” To get to Mahahual, travelers can fly into Chetumal International Airport and drive for about two hours. Travelers eager to experience vibrant marine life will find Mahahual to be the perfect destination. Spanning nearly 72 miles, the largest barrier reef system in Mexico and the Caribbean, Banco Chinchorro, is just an hour-long boat ride away. The UNESCO biosphere reserve is home to coral, American crocodiles, rays, turtles, nurse sharks and even sunken ships. On land, travelers can visit the Museum of Costa Maya and the Chacchoben Mayan ruins to learn more about local history and culture.

Todos Santos

About an hour’s drive from Los Cabos International Airport on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, Todos Santos is known as a haven for artists and creatives as well as its colonial architecture. Nestled between the coast and the desert, the town ranked highly for natural beauty, safety and culture with Far Homes. If travelers venture away from the bustling town center – home to boutique galleries, shops and restaurants – they can go surfing at the nearby Playa Los Cerritos or hike the coast of Punta Lobos. “At one time a small fishing village, Todos Santos now boasts several chic hotels and world-class dining, but it hasn’t lost its indie soul. Make sure to stop at Jazamango for a true Todos Santos dining experience,” said Nancy Costa, a local real estate agent with Costa Cabo Realty.

Cancun: An Unforgettable Family Destination

moon travel cancun

Choosing Family Friendly Accommodations: The cornerstone of a successful family vacation in Cancun lies in selecting the right accommodation. Fortunately, Cancun boasts numerous family-friendly resorts catering to the needs of both parents and children. Resorts with kid's clubs, supervised activities, and family-friendly amenities such as pools with waterslides are highly recommended. Among the top options are the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun Resort & Spa, The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun, and the Hyatt Ziva Cancun.

Fun-filled Activities for the Whole Family: After settling into the resort, families can explore the myriad of exciting activities Cancun has to offer. From a day at Xcaret Park, an eco-archaeological park, to exhilarating experiences at Xplor Park, there's no shortage of adventure. Dolphin Discovery offers families the chance to swim with dolphins and learn about marine conservation, while Playa Delfines provides a perfect setting for sun-soaked beach days.

Cultural Excursions and Educational Experiences: Beyond its beaches, Cancun serves as a gateway to Mexico's rich cultural heritage. Families can embark on Cancun cultural excursions and educational tours, including visits to the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza or Tulum . Day trips to nearby towns like Valladolid offer opportunities to explore colorful streets, local markets, and sample traditional Mexican cuisine. Additionally, hands-on learning experiences such as cooking classes and guided tours of wildlife sanctuaries are highly recommended.

Safety Tips for Family Vacations and Precautions: While Cancun is generally safe, it's essential for families to prioritize safety during their vacation. Supervision is crucial when swimming, and adherence to sunscreen application and hydration is paramount. When venturing out, sticking to well-lit areas and familiarizing oneself with emergency numbers are vital precautions.

Making Memories to Last a Lifetime: Cherishing every moment of the family vacation is paramount. Documenting experiences through photos, journals, and scrapbooks fosters lasting memories. Family bonding activities, such as beach games and sunset strolls, create invaluable connections.

In conclusion, Cancun emerges as the perfect family vacation destination, offering sun, sand, and adventure for travelers of all ages. By adhering to these tips and recommendations, families can plan the ultimate getaway and forge memories that will be treasured for years to come.

I found a travel hack to save money on all inclusive reservations at our favorite resorts by booking through vacation club member. Does anyone have other hacks?

.facebook com/groups/allinclusivediscounts/. Name is Alecia.

-payment in full is due upon booking the reservation

-you won’t earn world of Hyatt points

-calling in the payment to the reservation office is manual. Only Moon Palace had an online payment link

-she’s not a travel agent so book your transportation separately and flights too

What are some other hacks you have with saving on all inclusives? I know about the Points Guy but are there others for flights and report?

How is that a hack? People have been selling their timeshare points for years.

Really? For all inclusives? We’ve been doing it for a few years. We’ve done red week for a long time. I didn’t know the all inclusive hack was just was old of a thing. annd to be clear, this isn’t for buying a timeshare vacation club. We do NOT attend a sales pitch. It’s just using someone’s extra for all inciusives. Plus I have read some people not thinking it’s legitimate. I’m here to say it is and it works. Plus I would bet money on it that there are travelers who didn’t know about this.so to them, this is a new hack.

Scots dad's TUI holiday hell as Mexico hotel confirms "no booking" on arrival for £8k trip

A Scots family's dream holiday to a luxury resort in Mexico has been "ruined" after the hotel confirmed they had "no booking" on arrival.

Gerard Brodrick and his wife, Natalie, from Riddrie in Glasgow , forked out £8,000 for their two-week stay at Moon Palace in Cancun. The couple, alongside their 11-year-old son, Lennon, booked the plush getaway last year after previously missing a family holiday due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But when they arrived on June 5, they were told they weren't welcome at the hotel as they were informed that holiday provider TUI had "failed to pay" the resort for the family's stay. Instead, they were transferred to another nearby hotel that cost half the price of their original booking.

Gerard, 35, told the Record: "It has ruined our whole holiday and left it in tatters. When we arrived and were told there was no booking for us, I honestly thought my pals had paid Jeremy Beadle to wind me up and that he'd appear with a video camera - that is how bad this was.

"The staff were extremely rude and appeared to smirk at us and our situation. They told us that TUI had failed to pay for our booking and that if we wanted to stay, we'd have to pay in full - again.

"I couldn't believe it, we saved up 18 months for this. If we wanted to stay for the night, they were going to charge us $600."

The family debated with hotel staff for three hours before TUI moved them to another premises. But before a taxi came to collect them, Gerard claims security staff threatened to chuck the family out onto the streets - leaving his son "terrified".

He said: "At one point, they got three security guards to stand behind me and threatened to chuck us out if I continued to speak. My son was terrified, it's not exactly the safest place to chuck a family onto the street.

"The whole ordeal was horrific, we are heartbroken. It was meant to be the trip of a lifetime."

The dad-of-one said he and his family spent months combing through luxury hotels before finally selecting Moon Palace for its reputation and luxury offerings. In the meantime, they will be expected to stay at their new hotel for the remainder of their holiday.

He said: "It might be the last holiday that our kid wants to come on with us before he turns into a teenager, so we wanted to go all out. We genuinely booked this holiday for Moon Palace - it is the place to be in Cancun, it offers a premium family holiday and that's exactly what we wanted.

"It had amazing reviews and is highly reputable, so it seemed like the perfect holiday for us. The hotel we have been moved to is fine but it isn't a patch on what we paid for and expected to get.

"The quality and prestige that Moon Palace offers just isn't here, it is really inferior in comparison. We paid for a jacuzzi in our room at Moon Palace and they obviously don't have that here. It's the detail we wanted.

"We're gutted and angry about the whole situation and it's left us pondering over what we can do to salvage this holiday."

The Record understands that Moon Palace has been refusing a small number of customers at the hotel due to a contract dispute with TUI.

A TUI spokesperson said: "We are so sorry to hear about our customer's experience in Cancun. Our goal is to ensure customers have the best possible experience, so this is not the way we wanted their holiday to start. Our destination team is working to get this resolved as quickly as possible."

The Record approached Moon Palace Hotel for comment.
