Neil Young (born 12 November 1945) is a singer and songwriter from Toronto, Canada who has become an influential musician with an extensive back catalogue spanning over six decades and has created a legacy that will transcend time and trends.

From a young age Young developed a love for music hearing a wide variety of genres of on the radio, with rockabilly, doo wop, R&B, pop and country ruling the air waves. Later picking up his first instrument, the ukulele, Young’s musical journey had only just begun. Once enrolled in high school, he joined a few varying genre bands eventually progressing on to the guitar inspired by the likes of Elvis, Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison and Little Richard.

After leaving high school Young would play solo in coffeehouses and folk clubs where he would meet like-minded musicians. Briefly joining the band Mynah Birds in 1966, once the band had split him and bass player Bruce Palmer moved to Los Angeles, US seeking fame and fortune. It was here that together they formed the band Buffalo Springfield fusing psychedelia, rock, folk and country. In their two year duration the band released three studio albums.

Once Buffalo Springfield had disbanded, Young signed a solo deal with Reprise Records in 1968 sharing the same management as his friend Joni Mitchell. Later that year he released his debut self-titled album and although receiving mixed reviews from the critics for the heavy handed production, the album featured some musical gems such as “The Loner” and “I’ve Been Waiting for You” which still remains a staple in his live sets.

For his follow up album, Young sought the help of musicians Danny Whitten (guitar), Billy Talbot (bass) and Ralph Molina (drums) who would later become known as Crazy Horse. 1969 came the release of “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” credited as Neil Young with Crazy Horse. The album featured the hit singles “Cinnamon Girl”, “Down by the River” and “Cowgirl in the Sand”.

Young spent the majority of the early 70’s releasing music and touring with Crazy Horse. In 1972 tragedy struck when Whitten passed away from an overdose, taking time out to grieve the band resumed several months later with Young as a fleeting member. The death of Whitten and his roadie Bruce Berry the following year, had a huge impact on Young as he found himself in a very dark place aptly reflected in the 1975 album “Tonight’s the Night”.

The 80’s led to an experimental side of Young as personal battles consumed his mind as he deviated through stylistic variants apparent in the albums “Old Ways” (1985), “Landing on Water” (1986) and “Life” (1987). Back to business in 1989 Young produced the hit single “Rockin’ in the Free World” which peaked at number two, the album which preceded “Freedom” saw Young back in the mainstream on top form.

Young kicked off the 90’s as he returned to the heavy distortion sounds with the album “Ragged Glory” released in 1990 and swiftly followed by a nationwide tour with punk band Social Distortion and Sonic Youth which saw the return of many old school fans. As the subsequent years passed by Young became more actively involved in political issues surrounding war and injustice as he began using his music as an avenue for social commentary. With the US’s involvement with the Iraq war, Young produced songs such as “Let’s Impeach the President” and the 2006 album “Living With War” demonstrating his defiance and opposition to the country’s involvement.

Through his prolific career, Young has created a legacy which will last a lifetime and an impressive back catalogue spanning over six decades more than justifying his well-deserved position in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Live reviews

I love Neil Young. What else is there to it? Every facet of his multi-coloured and sprawling career fascinates and excites me. So when he stepped out on-stage at the LG Arena in Birmingham on June 11th, 2013 I was in a dual-state of giddy, fanboy delirium and devotional, stoic reverence.

It was a Neil Young and Crazy Horse show so I knew more-or-less what I was in for; loud, distorted, extended jams. This description is accurate in a way but also does the whole thing a disservice as it suggests the songs outstay their welcome, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Also be sure not to be put off by the whole “loud” and “distorted” thing - this was one of the best-sounding gigs I’ve ever been to. A mix so well-done they managed to make every element so clear despite the turned-up-to-11 and close-to-breaking distortion of the guitars (easily 90% of the racket is from Neil and Old Black). I attended the concert with my dad, with whom I don’t share that much in the way of musical interests, and we were right at the front and atmosphere was incredible. This was the Alchemy tour and the stage was set to look like the Rust Never Sleeps and Smell the Horse / Weld tours of 1978 and 1991 - which meant huge, oversized replicas of amps and a microphone and the stage crew kitted out in scientist garb. During the build-up the stage scientists began theatrically exaggerating their actions and after a dramatic hoisting of the giant microphone over the climax of The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life” everyone cheered encouragingly. It was only after watching the scientist’s celebrating we noticed, entering from stage right, was some guy with long hair and a black hat. After a rousing rendition of the national anthem with the band and stage crew in arm the band got to their instruments and off they went.

The first song was “Love to Burn” - a 10 minute epic from Ragged Glory - and from the opening bars I knew this concert was going to be special as the usual opener was “Love and Only Love” - the other 10 minute epic from Ragged Glory. The setlist wound through mostly new material at first, stopping off at Psychedelic Pill tracks (the title track and “Walk Like a Giant” - which, with the ensuing feedback barrage, lasted about half an hour), a track from 1980’s Re-ac-tor (“Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze”) and some quieter songs (the unreleased “Hole in the Sky” and “Singer Without a Song” plus Neil solo on Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Heart of Gold”) before kicking back into high-gear with “Ramada Inn” and a string of many of NY&CH’s finest sprawling epics (“Cinnamon Girl”, “F*!#in’ Up” complete with an extended and funky bridge section, “Cortez the Killer”, the Buffalo Springfield song “Mr Soul” and “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)” done in the style of “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)”).

After all that the most prominent thought on my mind was “Where’s “Powderfinger”??” - although I’m hardly one to insist on an artist playing a certain song. Sure enough they came for an encore and delivered the song with such power it exceeded all my wildest expectations. It was even more impressive (to me, at least) given the song is not usually played as an encore but here seemed to be in it’s rightful place. The band left and the stage stayed dark for a while, leaving us highly anticipating another return. The cases for the mock, oversized amps came down and when the house lights went up there was a fair amount (semi-joking?) booing and the stage crew began dismantling the place. My dad turns to me and says “That was f*!#ing mega!”. If this review was allowed to consist of just four words, it’d be those.

Saturday 11th June. The O2. Neil Young and the Promise of the Real. So while the rest of the country were experiencing the usual mixture of short lived joy and then subsequent depression of watching England in a major football tournament, the sensible money was going to the O2 to see the legend that’s Neil Young. Given the spate of musical icon deaths in recent months the decision was made to see the 70 year old Mr Young in case more tragedy descends on the music business.

Young has been energised recently by a fresh new band supporting him on this recent tour. We have seen him on a few occasions and this time there’s no big set, oversized amps or too many gimmicks. He enters dressed a peasant sowing seeds on the stage (more of that later), sits down at the piano and proceeds to produce a sublime acoustic set of twenty five minutes or so running through classic such as ‘After the Gold Rush’, ‘Heart of Gold’, ‘Needle and the Damage Done’ and from ‘Hank to Hendrix’ before he’s joined by the band.

The evening’s set was heavily drawn from two albums, ‘Harvest’ and ‘Ragged Glory’ and we were treated to some rarely played tracks such as ‘Alabama’ and 'If ‘I could have her tonight’ from his first album which he’s only played once before and that was the night before.

The theme of the night if there was one was look after the world, fuck corporate America, be good to each other and protect our valuable natural resources. After the opening acoustic set we then launch into two hours of riff tastic jamming with extended renditions of ‘Love and only Love’ and ‘Words’ clocking in at twenty minutes apiece.

What is impressive about Young is his sheer energy. The new band have revitalised him and it’s them who have to keep up with the seventy year old rocker and not the other way around. His voice is also still as strong as ever and we all join in to set closer Fuckin Up and it’s all over. Like a fine wine Neil Young is getting better and long may he keep rockin us.

Keep on hard rockin baby.

The storm had cleared by the time the women in straw hats and denim shorts came out to pepper the stage with seeds. Planting crops and watering dandelions, the farmer’s daughters represented the victims in Neil Young’s new manifesto against Monsanto. It was a unique way to start a show, but it did make me a little nervous. The new album is terrible. And I was really hoping that the show would not focus too much on Young’s latest protest. My fears were put to rest when he followed the girls onto the stage to perform a five song solo set. As he sat up there in the dark, all alone, and sang “After The Goldrush”, I was reminded that Neil Young really hasn’t strayed too far from his original message. “Look at Mother Nature on the run, in the 21st century”. The words have been updated since the 70’s, but the meaning had not. That classic song led into “Heart of Gold”, “Long May You Run” and “Old Man”, as he made his way from the acoustic guitar to the organ. “Driving to Denver from Milkwaukee we saw a lot of beautiful land…and deserted farmland”, he told the crowd, once again blaming the chemicals produced by Monsanto, before performing a natural anthem for “Mother Earth”. His opening selection of songs tied perfectly into the theme of his new album, but they also exposed just how far off track he has gone in recent years. “Mother nature on the run” just sounds so much better than “want a cup of coffee, but I don’t want a GMO.” He’s always written protest songs, but they also contained poetry. He didn’t have to name-drop big corporations to get his message across when he wrote those songs. And he didn’t need men in hazmat suits to come out and spray the audience with faux poisoning before introducing his band when he toured those albums. - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2015/07/11/neil-young-promise-of-the-real-red-rocks-07-08-15/#sthash.pEqFau9w.dpuf

A wonderful event. Contributing to a charity that gives kids that aren't quite up to the average camp experience a chance to have a great time that empowers them.

Father John Misty opened the show with his quirky brand of showmanship in, according to him, a rare instance of playing solo and while the sun is up. He warmed us up with an intimate performance of several of his well known tunes.

Norah Jones was next. She led her trio through their paces , playing some of her newer stuff and hitting the spot with the very intimate crowd with her classics as well. She ended her set with a cover of Neil Youngs "Don't be Denied".

Neil was next. He strolled on unannounced picked up an acoustic guitar and began strumming a very loose and beautiful version of "Sugar Mountain". He followed that with a Buffalo Springfield era "I am a Child", very appropriate for this event. Next was seamless transition to "Comes a Time". He continued with a dozen more songs, Set list here- https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/neil-young/2019/painted-turtle-camp-lake-hughes-ca-1b9c8110.htm - all solo and acoustic either on guitar or piano, with the exception of the last song "Harvest Moon" on which he was joined by Norah and her band.

His stage setup included what was likely a tack piano and his ornate pump organ. The crowd was wanting more of Neil and since those keyboards hadn't been heard from we all were expecting an encore that might include them. It was not to be. After several minutes of clapping and hooting Neil and Nora returned for an encore of "The Losing End".

A very special day was had by all. Thanks to everyone involved.

NEIL forever-YOUNG A sunny & warm summer evening 30th July Neil Young and Crazy Horse visited Copenhagen, Denmark. Being 65 - almost the same age as Neil - his music has meant a lot to me throughout my every day life. I was so lucky to get a place up front - actually row one. By the time Neil Young entered the scene I had been standing for over 3 hours, but by the first cord all my pain was forgotten. Neil was playing as intensely as I had hoped, and out of the blue and to my own surprise tears were running out of my eyes. For the first 3 numbers photographers were running around with their obscene camera lenses and Neil was jamming with Crazy Horse with his back to the photographers ....and his audience. And I am sad to say, that it was his back I saw the most of, only once did I have the joy of seeing him pick the guitar strings. Neil Young is a man with a message and musician with capital M, and that's why his concert matters. Biggest moment was when he was alone on stage - here he was bonding with his audience. He sang two numbers, Blowing in the wind and Heart go Gold and I must admit, that Neil Young has the best singing audience I have EVER heard. We created magic together. Neil Young really wants to make the Earth better for the next generation to come and save on the energy - I will suggest that the part of the concert: "Neil alone on the stage" become a little longer. We loved Neil's undivided attention, and a lot of electricity could be saved to make the world a little better. Thank you for an evening where I remembered why I didn't cut my hair, because I still feel I owe it to someone.

My husband & I are in our 50's and my husband has been a Neil Young fan as long as he can remember. I grew to be a NY fan after we got married. Our three children became NY fans. They had no choice but to like NY, since we listened to so much of his music. We finally got the chance for tickets to a Neil Young concert in Lincoln NE. We were so excited!! We grabbed 10 CD's to listen to while we were driving; leaving 15 more CD's at home.

Neil Young began the concert with "After the Gold Rush" ....just Neil, his piano and his harmonica. It was amazing. Everything we waited for. He played several of our favorites & we couldn't have dreamed of any better. THEN......he started in on his "Monsanto kick" and never looked back. We get it...that he is an environmentalist, We are in favor of saving our earth too. BUT, did he really have to devote 1/3 of his concert to the fact he is dead-set against corporate everything? I don't like using RoundUp on my yard either, but I don't have to dwell on that.

The start of the concert was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed the first 2/3 of it. Neil ruined it with his political views in song. It seemed like half the fans left the concert early. We stayed til the end, only to hear "Cinnamon Girl" as his encore piece.

We will not even consider purchasing a CD with the "Monsanto" songs on it.

Will still enjoy Neil Young music in the future. Just wished he would've stuck to the "good stuff" in our chance of a lifetime to hear him LIVE. He could've sung so many more favorites. He would've kept the audience til the end.

I travelled from Winnipeg to Vancouver to see Neil Young play with this band. In the past few years I have attended 2 concerts in the ' Peg, both of Neil solo.

Nothing compared to the variety of song choices, never mind the climax of these gentlemen's guitar licks that jammed into one of the best guitar sandwiches i have ever tasted.

From Neil's early writings in Harvest Moon, and Southern Man to his stance on Farmers and the destruction of who can grow what in the song Monsanto, Neil Young has always been a leader of political messages through his songs.

He's just one of those legends who isn't afraid. People listen. He educates, and we all go home with better understanding .

Neil's band including the guitar stylings of Willie Nelson's sons were astounding. The drummers were on note all the time. The harmony of the voices was full, and the pride of this home town girl was huge.

You're getting better Mr. Young. You're connecting with the audience on so many levels now.And the kids of our generation supported their parents in taking a seat too.

I give five clefs for this concert.Bravo. It was worth the ride.

I've been going to rock concerts since 1968 and this show was easily in the top 10. Forget the album even though it represents an important political protest. You have not heard that music until you hear it live. What an amazing, hard rocking band! Countless moments of the four guitars ( bass included there) standing in a circle and driving a groove so hard that it was driving the audience into full ecstatic dance fever. I just can't say enough about the band. They may just be the best that Neil has ever assembled. Spontaneity seemed like the rule rather than the exception. I would say that out of the three hours he was on stage maybe two songs were less than stellar. But the bar was so high that they had set that I couldn't fault them for taking a breather here and there. Hell, the audience needed a breather! We left in a state of absolute giddy delight and satisfaction. As an older musician myself I am inspired and awed by Neil Young. Still creating vital music and pressing forward.

Neil was Neil. Laid back and phenomenally talented. He played several different guitars, each with a name, harmonica, two pianos (which he brought with him for this tour), a harpsichord, and a ukulele. It's amazing how talented this one man is.

My only exception with this concert was that there was too much obscure music played. He has such a wealth of fantastic songs that span over 4 decades and several groups, so many of which I was hoping to hear. In previous setlists from this tour, he included 3 or 4 Buffalo Springfield tunes, but did not play them on July 11. Very disappointing. So many of his greatest songs were missing.

Other than that, I would go see him again!

Two and a half hours of Neil Young is great value by any standards, but a pity for those who had to leave before the end.If you've seen NY then you should already know that he always delivers, the best of the old time rockers for me, still uncompromising and driving his young band on, but he started off solo on piano, After The Goldrush taking us all by surprise. The show ebbed and flowed from there, full of well known songs but clearly off the cuff too. I loved it as much as the first time I saw him about 30 years ago.

Real top notch support from Laura Marling too. Hope to see her in her own right soon. Dynamite double bill.

Neil Young + Crazy Horse Announce 2024 ‘Love Earth Tour’

Neil Young +   Crazy Horse have announced a run of spring 2024 shows billed as the Love Earth Tour . The 16-show amphitheater run, produced by Live Nation , marks the first full tour for Young and his long-running, on-and-off backing band in a decade.

The Neil Young + Crazy Horse 2024 Love Earth Tour is set to kick off with two shows in San Diego, CA on April 24th and 25th before making its way to Phoenix, AZ (4/27), Austin, TX (5/1), Dallas, TX (5/2), Huntsville, AL (5/5), Atlanta, GA (5/7), Franklin, TN (5/8), Bristow, VA (5/11), Camden, NJ (5/12), Queens, NY (5/14), Mansfield, MA (5/17), Bridgeport, CT (5/18), Toronto, ON (5/20), Clarkston, MI (5/22), and Chicago, IL (5/23). Neil Young + Crazy Horse are also scheduled to perform at the second weekend of  New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans, LA (5/4).

Neil Young + Crazy Horse have been relatively active in the studio in recent years—they recorded three albums over the past five years (2019’s Colorado , 2021’s Barn , and 2022’s World Record )—but have largely shied away from performing live. In 2023, they performed a pair of intimate shows at West Hollywood, CA’s  The Roxy in honor of the venue’s 50th birthday in addition to a show at  Rivoli in Toronto.

The Crazy Horse band lineup has shifted gradually since forming in the 1960s. The most recent version of the band’s lineup featured Neil Young (guitar, vocals) alongside Ralph Molina (drums), Billy Talbot (bass), and  Nils Lofgren (guitar).  Micah Nelson , the son of  Willie Nelson who performs under the moniker  Particle Kid , also joined the band for the two 2023 shows at The Roxy. While the band lineup for the  Love Earth Tour has not been officially announced, Lofgren will be on tour with  Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band during that time, leading fans to speculate that Nelson will take his place for the run.

In addition to announcing the tour, Neil Young + Crazy Horse have announced a new live album, FU##IN’ UP , recorded in 2023. As Young explained of the coming release in a statement, “In the spirit it’s offered… made this for the Horse lovers. I can’t stop it. The horse is runnin’. What a ride we have. I don’t want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share.”

Videos by American Songwriter

However, they’ll venture north of the border for a show in Toronto in May. At this time, Young and the band haven’t announced any supporting acts. So, it’s likely they’ll be playing a massive headlining set on all 16 stops of their upcoming trek.

The Love Earth Tour kicks off on April 24 at the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre in San Diego, California. Neil Young and Crazy Horse will hit cities in Texas, Alabama, Arizona, Tennessee, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, and more before the tour ends. They’ll wrap things up at the Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island in Chicago, Illinois on May 23.

Tickets go on sale to the public later this week. Presale tickets through the Neil Young Archives are available today (February 13). The presale will remain open until Friday. Tickets go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday (February 16). Check Ticketmaster for presale tickets.

After the presale ends, you can head to StubHub for tickets . Orders through StubHub are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

Those who purchase tickets can opt-in to receive a physical copy of the new Neil Young and Crazy Horse album FU##IN’ UP. The nine-track collection features raw recordings of familiar songs. “In the spirit it’s offered … made this for the Horse lovers. I can’t stop it. The horse is runnin’. What a ride we have. I don’t want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share,” Young said of the new album.

Be sure to set a reminder to head to StubHub and get your tickets ASAP because they’re going to sell out fast.

Neil Young hits the road again with West Coast solo acoustic concert tour this summer

neil young tour dates

Neil Young is hitting the road along the west coast this summer – and apparently breaking out some little-heard classics.

The limited run of solo shows along the west coast begins July 1 with four consecutive shows in Los Angeles, a press release revealed Friday. Other stops include San Diego, then dates in Oregon and Washington, before ending in Napa, California. Singer-songwriter Chris Pierce will be a special guest during the Coastal Tour.

These will be Young's first series of live performances since before the COVID-19 pandemic. He skipped Farm Aid 2022, but in April he did perform at the Light up the Blues event in Los Angeles , a benefit for Autism Speaks held by former bandmate Stephen Stills, and at Willie Nelson's 90th birthday concert .

Young voiced hesitation to return to live shows amid the pandemic to USA TODAY in December 2021, while speaking on the release of the album "Barn" from him and Crazy Horse: "There is no post-COVID right now. We've got a whole 'welcome back' thing," Young said, who added he had no touring plans at the time. "Give me a break. This is misinformation. It is totally wrong. We are not over this. We're not anywhere near over it."

Most of the songs Young plans to play – about 80% – will be songs he has recorded but not played live, he told fans during a Zoom call Thursday with Thrasher's Wheat , an unofficial Young fan and news site.

Tickets go on sale starting Wednesday, June 14 at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster and other usual outlets. Members of the Neil Young Archives can attempt to get tickets during a presale period starting Monday, June 12.

Neil Young and his band, Crazy Horse, will launch their first tour together since 2019 with a pair of April performances in San Diego that are the only California dates on their itinerary. The North American concert trek will conclude May 23 in Chicago and includes stops in Dallas, Atlanta and Toronto. all dates and cities appear below.

The tour-opening concerts are set for April 24 and 25 at San Diego State University’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theater Theatre. This will be Young’s first San Diego performance since his often mesmerizing July 2023 solo concert at The Shell.

The upcoming “Love Earth Tour,” as it is being billed, will coincide with the release of Young’s new double-album with Crazy Horse, “F##in’ Up.” The album’s title is the name of a song that first appeared on 1990’s “Ragged Glory,” the seventh of 20 albums Young and the band have made together thus far.

When purchasing their tickets for the tour, fans “can opt in to receive a physical CD” of the new double-album “for no additional cost,” according to a press release issued Tuesday morning by Live Nation, the tour’s promoter.

Young has led Crazy Horse, off and on, since 1969. His 2019 tour with the band was the first since rhythm guitarist and periodic keyboardist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro retired from the group in 2014.

Young, 78, has not toured with Crazy Horse in five years. But he did perform two special club shows with the band last fall at The Roxy in Los Angeles, followed by a date in Toronto at Rivoli, a bar that has a capacity of just 240.

All three of those gigs last fall featured Crazy Horse co-founders Billy Talbot on bass and Ralph Molina on drums, along with multi-instrumentalist Nils Lofgren, who came on board in 1970, and Micah Nelson, who is one of Willie Nelson’s sons and performed with Young between 2015 and 2019 as a member of the band Promise of The Real.

Young and Crazy Horse’s upcoming new double-album features nine songs that were recorded at those three concerts last year. A limited edition color vinyl pressing will be released April 20 on national Record Store Day.

“In the spirit it’s offered… (we) made this for the Horse lovers,” Young said in a statement released Tuesday. “I can’t stop it. The Horse is runnin’. What a ride we have. I don’t want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share,”

It remains to be seen if Crazy Horse’s lineup will change for the pending “Love Earth Tour.” Lofgren is scheduled to resume touring as a longtime member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band on March 19 in Phoenix, as part of a tour that includes a March 25 concert at Pechanga Arena San Diego.

But the Springsteen tour will be on a break between April 22 and May 4. That means — at least in theory — Lofgren could play with Young and Crazy Horse for the first few dates of their spring tour before re-joining Springsteen for the May 5 launch of that band’s 2024 European tour.

“Love Earth Tour” tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday at ticketmaster.com. Tickets for the two tour-opening San Diego concerts are prices from $75 to $250 each, plus service fees.

A two-day pre-sale for Neil Young Archives members begins today, Tuesday, at 7 a.m. PST. A Live Nation pre-sale begins at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Tour Is a Tribute to a Titan From Their Past

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are about halfway through their North American tour , and there’s already a strong fan consensus that this is their best run in recent memory , perhaps even going back to the Nineties grunge era they helped kickstart. A big factor at play is the addition of guitarist Micah Nelson, who has deep respect for the material and an uncanny ability to emulate the distinct styles of both Danny Whitten and Frank “Poncho” Sampedro, his two main predecessors in the band.

Just two years away from his 80th birthday, Young is playing with a fierce, wild-eyed passion and mixing up the setlist practically every night. Some critics have labeled this a “greatest hits” show since nearly every song in the rotating repertoire was recorded between 1969 and 1979 (or during their early Nineties resurgence), but something more profound is happening onstage than boomer nostalgia.

Young met Briggs right around the time Buffalo Springfield dissolved in 1968. “I was hitchhiking,” Young told biographer Jimmy McDonough in his book Shakey . “He stopped to pick me up. I just wanted to check out the vehicle. Briggs was a unique individual. He was as crazy as I am. I called him Mr. Briggs most of the time. Monsieur Briggs.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

“Briggs went on the trip — whatever it was,” Young told McDonough. “Stayed with it. As long as it was happening, he was there. Hard to describe, really. The thing is, he knew how much work went into this. If it was a record or a song or somethin’, he knew the effort that went into making it right and the care it took…Very few people understood that. Particularly very few people around me. He was as tenacious as I am. Maybe even more. When he got an idea in his head that somethin’ was fucked, it was fucked. He wasn’t going to change his mind.”

“Get on his wrong side, forget it,” Briggs friend Bobby Morris said. “He’d probably kill you before he’d fight you. Just shoot you dead.”

Briggs was just 51 when he died from lung cancer on Nov. 26, 1995. Young and Crazy Horse headed right into the studio to record Broken Arrow in the aftermath, where they poured their grief into the music. And even 29 years later, Young still looks a little pained every night onstage when he delivers “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’).”

Watch neil young and crazy horse perform 'sedan delivery' for first time since 2013, neil young stuns at 2024 tour launch, unveils lost 'cortez the killer' verse.

Young’s music has been more than a little scattered since Briggs left the Earth. He’s made some great records like Silver and Gold , Prairie Wind and Psychedelic Pill , but there’s also been a lot of duds that likely wouldn’t have passed the Briggs test.

When David Crosby spoke to Rolling Stone in 2016, he hinted at this without naming any names. “Too often artists just hear, ‘Oh, sweetie, you’re fantastic!'” he said. “They’re not your friends. They’re just kissing your butt. There’s a perfect example of that, a person we both know. I’m not gonna say whose name it is, but it really fits…There’s probably been three or four bad records in a row.”

Ivan Cornejo Announces New Album 'Mirada'

Whoopi goldberg reunites 'sister act 2' choir to perform 'oh happy day' for 30th anniversary, meet the new cast of ‘love island usa' season six, bad boy for life: sean combs’ history of violence.

We were talking about David Briggs. It’s not a name you hear too often these days unless you’re speaking to a diehard Neil Young fan. Briggs almost never gave interviews, and was content to live far outside the spotlight. But all these years later, Young is honoring him on a tour where he plays “Down by the River,” “Powderfinger,” “Cortez the Killer,” “Cinnamon Girl,” and other timeless songs he created with him. The cheers all night are partially for Briggs.

A few songs into a Friday night appearance by Neil Young and Crazy Horse at the seasonal, southern Massachusetts shed, Young took a generous sip from his cup and declared, in jest, that this evening’s performance was being sponsored by the satisfying beverage. It was as close as the iconoclastic Young would get to the specter of commerce, or to any calculated spectacle, (the road crew in white lab coats, aside), on this “Love Earth” tour stop at Mansfield’s Xfinity Center. Whatever the fuel, the result was an enthralling, thunderous two-hour ride with the inimitable Crazy Horse- diverted only slightly with a latter-half solo acoustic respite- and what was otherwise the epitome of minimalist, resolute, and immortal rock-and-roll.

The ragged and glorious quartet opened with a slow and somber reading of “Cortez the Killer,” as Young, in patchwork jeans and railroad cap, swayed to the foreboding rhythm held in check by his veteran cohorts- bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina- and the youngblood, Micah Nelson, on guitar. Almost immediately, they united in the picturesque pose they’d reprise often throughout the night; collected in a tight triangle, as if gathered Shakespearean witches, mystically locking into Molina’s looming cadence, and he to theirs, conjuring up a thickly dark brew.

The capacity house of nearly 20,000 erupted in knowing cheers, raising cellphones to capture the moment, as the revealing strains of the “Cinnamon Girl” rippled out. The masses then settled in as the four tore through “Fuckin’ Up,” with Nelson, at one point, strumming his delightfully distorted electric with the top of his head- hair guitar, perhaps- in a moment defining the hypnotic abandon that is Crazy Horse. Young paused to dedicate “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’)” to his longtime producer, David Briggs, then followed that selection with two from his solo catalog- “I’m the Ocean,” and his Tonight’s the Night kiss-off to Woodstock, “Roll Another Number (For the Road).” Making its tour debut, and first appearance in a decade, Young next delved into the Zuma nugget, “Barstool Blues.”

On a stage adorned with modest and motionless props- giant, faux Fender amps and road cases camouflaging the real things- and with the jumbo video screens turned off, Young and his ensemble kept neatly to center stage, under the backlit glow of a horse in perpetual stride. Young was in fine voice throughout, offering resonating efforts on “Mansion On a Hill” and a buoyant “Powderfinger” met with another burst of applause from the full house. Yet, he was equally impressive alone, with just acoustic guitar and harmonica, for the beautifully delicate trinity of “Comes A Time,” “Heart of Gold,” and “Human Highway.”

Still, as soon as Young welcomed back the group for a set-closing, proto-grunge wallop of “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black),” in the midst of that majestic maelstrom he seemed, too, exactly where he belonged. Demonstrably Young noted his appreciation for his bandmates as they concluded the finale, then again in the encore; a two-song blitz of “Down By The River” and “Like A Hurricane,” the latter featuring Nelson on an organ lowered, and swinging, from the rafters.

It’s not a small thing, this reunion of Young and Crazy Horse, on the road in 2024, that was anticipated and hinted at pre-pandemic, and now has fatefully arrived. There’s always been something unique and worthy of reverence about this band- on the precipice, always, yet ultimately unwavering- as it remains as convincing as its rallying cry: rock-and roll will never die. Maybe it’s the gift of time. Maybe it’s the tea.

Neil Young tribute band, Dillon Carmichael, Jackyl headline at Marion Popcorn Festival

T he Main Stage at the 43rd annual Marion Popcorn Festival will feature three nights of free live entertainment, including a tribute to a legendary singer/songwriter, one of the fresh faces of country music and closing out with some Southern Rock tour warriors from Georgia Sept. 5-7 in downtown Marion.

HARVEST - The Neil Young Electric & Acoustic Tribute kicks off Main Stage headline entertainment Sept. 5.

Presented by Buckeye Community School, HARVEST performs a tribute to classic Neil Young, covering Young's career from Buffalo Springfield, CSNY and solo to the modern Harvest Moon, with a particular focus on the early-to-mid '70s solo and Crazy Horse era.

Since 1987, members Jim Tigue and Eroc Sosinski have been performing Neil Young music for fans across the Midwest, in the bands Harvest and later Tie-Dye Harvest, the Jim & Eroc Duo, and eventually forming the Pink Floyd concert act Wish You Were Here. Peter Telari (also of WYWH), Tim Hamman and Keith Chelm are veteran northeast Ohio musicians as well. For 28 years, Sosinski was the late Michael Stanley's primary bassist/vocalist, performing in concert at venues across the country and on many studio and live releases since 1993.

Main stage entertainment starts at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 with local group Analog Youth , sponsored by Route30 Harley-Davidson.

Dillon Carmichael

Dillon Carmichael will take the Main Stage Sept. 6. Carmichael is a rising country music artist from Burgin, Kentucky. He’s the nephew of John Michael Montgomery and Eddie Montgomery of Montgomery Gentry, who performed at the Marion Popcorn Festival in 2021.

In December, the Country Radio Seminar named Carmichael as one of the Fresh Faces for 2024. He landed on Artist To Watch lists from Billboard, Rolling Stone, Taste of Country, Pandora and more, reached No. 2 at country radio’s Most Added chart with his debut radio single “Dancing Away With My Heart,” electrified festival crowds from CMA Fest to Dierks Bentley’s Seven Peaks, and earned tour dates with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Brooks & Dunn, Justin Moore, Dwight Yoakam and Trace Adkin, among others. The 2024 tour artists include Jon Pardi, Cody Johnson and Luke Bryan.

Carmichael’s new Pardi-produced single, “Drinkin’ Problems,” is climbing the radio charts and was the most added song for five consecutive weeks. It serves as an introduction into his four-track project, “Where I Grew Up,” that highlights his bluegrass roots, produced by Riser House Entertainment. Rolling Stone dubbed Carmichael as “country music’s most convincing young star since Stapleton.”

In October 2021, Carmichael released “Son of A.” The tune marked the emerging artist’s third single to radio in under five years after being signed to Sony-distributed Riser House Entertainment. It also inspired the name of his 2021 full-length album, which was later expanded as a deluxe project. Also charting on this release was the single “Hot Beer.”

The New York Times compared Carmichael to Randy Travis in his previous album, “Hell On An Angel,” and said his rich baritone voice “moves with the heft and certainty of a tractor-trailer,” while NPR praised his “deep holler,” and Parade raved that “Carmichael defines pure country.”

Jackyl rocks out on final night of Popcorn Festival

Jackyl will wrap-up the Main Stage entertainment Sept. 7.

On Aug. 11, 1992, Jackyl released its debut album on Geffen Records. It was the middle of Grunge, but Jackyl’s loud rock songs, produced by Brendan O’Brien (Stone Temple Pilots, AC/DC), earned the LP double-platinum status. Videos for the singles "The Lumberjack," "I Stand Alone,” "Down On Me," "Dirty Little Mind," "When Will It Rain" and "Back Off Brother" earned rave reviews and rabid fans for the band’s no-holds-barred energy and lyrics.

On Aug. 11, 2022, 30 years to the day of Jackyl’s debut, the lineup played Sturgis, South Dakota’s Full Throttle Saloon, in a celebration of the lineup’s 30th anniversary that also marked the debut of the quartet’s album, "Jackyl 30 Coming In Hot" and first single, “Get All Up In It.”

From 2009-2015 Jackyl's Jesse James Dupree became one of the lead characters of the hit reality TV show "Full Throttle Saloon." In 2010 the band released "When Moonshine and Dynamite Collide," which featured DMC from Run-D.M.C.

“Jeff, Chris and Roman coming down on the ‘one’ together is still a force of nature,” Dupree said. “Thirty years together and I feel we’ve found an honest place about our new music, our fans and us as a band, on and offstage.”

All bands will perform at 8:30 p.m., following 6 p.m. opening bands. Friday and Saturday opening acts will be announced later.

Performances on the Festival’s Main Stage are free. A limited number of Kernel sponsorship seats are available for Main Stage performances by calling 740-387-FEST.

Other festival events and activities include the Popcorn Parade on Thursday with over 300 units, a 5k run, fine arts show, crafts and vendors, corn hole tournament, Community Showcase Stage, Poppin’ Party stage beer garden, Popcorn Matinee musical performance at the Marion Palace Theatre and more.

The ad market is not ready for the imminent streaming sports boom, ice spice’s debut album, ‘y2k,’ finally arrives next month, popular on variety.

(Friday night, the band performs one U.S. show before heading overseas, at New York’s Bowery Ballroom and can also be seen on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” performing the new single “Teenage Summer.”)

You said something recently that was intriguing, about how being in Fleetwood Mac for a couple of years gave you a different perspective on Crowded House — something to the effect of, “Hey, I’ve got my own classic band, actually.” It sounds like maybe you had some kind of epiphany about embracing the band’s legacy and what it represents in the world.

I realized that I had my own band that has kind of a mana , as they say in New Zealand [a Maori word that is understood to mean “prestige”]… some kind of gravitas or something that carries it along … a flag that you follow somehow. And I was also really hungry to be fully engaged. I wouldn’t want to be churlish at all about my time in Fleetwood Mac. It was magnificent. But I wasn’t fully engaged the whole night, which was really unusual for me. And so I was really looking forward to the feeling of being right there at the front and center of something. So all of those factors were part of the decision to get the band back together, for sure.

You did something a bit humbling in being part of that group, but the driver’s seat is where you feel, “This is where I’m meant to be”?

Or just being able to be a part of every note… You know, you’re hearing the spaces between the notes, and you’re not just waiting till your parts come up. I guess I’m used to that in my musical life, so really, I relish that. It’s being in some kind of altered state of consciousness, and if you’re right in the midst of it, you can keep that feeling going and it can become transcendent.

Almost strangely, when we look at the lineup of Crowded House on stage now, it feels like everyone in in it is either formally or informally family at this point. You have your two sons; you have Nick Seymour, an original member going back to the mid-‘80s; and Mitchell Froom, your original producer, on keyboards. It was not unfamiliar to see Mitchell sitting in on keys when you would do L.A. shows over the decades, but he is on board for tours and all.

Yeah, Mitchell is a fully functioning band member now. You know, he keeps trying to organize things like a producer all the time, and I say, “No, just jam!” And he’s enjoying that. I mean, he’s still very meticulous about getting his parts working for the songs, but I think he’s really enjoying being part of an ensemble. It’s a really lovely change of dynamic for him, and of course, his deep attachment and knowledge of the band makes him a very soulful addition. And as you know, my two boys who grew up with the band, it’s in their DNA, and they’ve become two of my favorite musicians on the planet. And with Nick obviously there from the start, I feel like everyone’s deeply connected, which is a really nice feeling. I think bands can redefine themselves, but to do so with such an intimate group of people makes it feel all more special. So it feels like it’s a very cohesive and soulful lineup.

Yeah. It feels like it’s got a lot of future built into it. We’re expanding our shades and the areas we can go to with the addition of two really good writers. Liam and Elroy are both very, very good writers, and with Mitchell’s arrangement skills, it feels like we’re expanding our universe, if that’s possible — expanding our dimensions, anyway — and that’s exciting.

In the past, it has gotten to a point a couple of times, for version one and version two, where I couldn’t see the way ahead. I couldn’t imagine it, and it wasn’t manifesting in rehearsals, so I sort of stepped away from it. The first time [in the mid-1990s], we thought it was necessary to make a grand statement and say, “No, that’s it: we’re breaking up.” The second time [in the mid-2010s], it was like, “Well, let’s just not do it for a while, and not make such a big deal out of it.” This time I see it as an ongoing thing. I think I’ll be doing the odd project off to the side, maybe something with my brother (Tim Finn), or other projects, possibly. But Crowded House feels like it will continue now for a long time, and we can continue to expand it and get better.

Was there ever a time at which you thought that that being under the banner Crowded House was like a limitation, where it felt like it glued you to a signature sound? It feels like you have found this kind of happy balance where everyone can say, “Yes, of course that feels like Crowded House,” but nobody’s gonna mistake it for an attempt to precisely recreate “Woodface” or something.

Yeah, I mean, all the records have their own distinct qualities. Even in our first incarnation, we changed over the different records. You know, the first record was kind of rollicking, and the second record [“Temple of Low Men”] was more reflective. The third, “Woodface,” is a little combination there. And, you know, “Together Alone,” was quite different again. I hope we’ll keep changing from album to album, song to song. Certain things become more sophisticated because you’ve been doing it for longer, and so your observational skills come to the fore. And you can pick subtlety as an asset, once you become better at observing how music works — and hopefully won’t lose the essence of a pop sensibility, which I always have and feels good to me.

When a song you’re expected to play comes up, whether it’s one of the ones you were doing in the Fleetwood Mac shows or the ones that obviously everybody wants to hear on tour now, does your relationship to those change over time, or cyclically? Do you ever think you’l go mad if you have to play a hit one more time, and then you come back around to embracing it, or does that stay the same over the years?

I mean, there’s a couple of ’em that probably are less interesting to play, possibly sometimes because I’m playing acoustic guitar, and that’s the bit that’s not as fun. But the ones that I play electric guitar on, you can find new notes every night and you can influence the sound more. So that’s probably more what it comes down to, rather than the song itself. Actually, having said that, I play acoustic guitar half the night, and I’m quite happy to. But I do love it when I can get the old electric out and me and Liam can go wailing together.

The single, as we understand it, went through a title change. It was originally called “Life’s Imitation” and it took a young family member to change it to “Teenage Summer”?

It took my grandson to point it out, actually. Because he was singing it one day when I was on FaceTime with him, and he said, “I really liked that song, papa… ‘Teenage Summer.’” And I went, dang … this seemed entirely obvious, that suddenly that he’d picked out the key moment of the song, and the children might have to be heard. So I made a late call to change the title. I might’ve been subtly afraid in the early stages that it was a bit too Katy Perry or something to call a song “Teenage Summer.” But, you know, why should young people have all the fun? … I think there’s other hooks in the song, so I didn’t really figure out that that was the one, but that’s the moment that he really related to. And he is only 5 years old, so I figured, does he know what a teenage summer is? But there’s something about that that resonates for people, and certainly a lot of people have said to me since that it sparks some kind of nostalgic yearning, which is cool. You know, I’ll take anything if it makes you feel it.

There are a few songs on the album, like “All That I Can Ever Own,” that seem to refer to a child or a grandchild maybe just the sense of childhood. And there seems to be a real sense of kind of generationality in some of these songs. When you sing, “Every child is a mystic having visions of a new dawn”…

Well, I am particularly interested in the way that children think, and trying to keep up within myself a childlike view. Certainly with making music, being childlike in the way you approach it, to start with, is always a good idea. And then to be able to apply the reason of an adult to the editing of those ideas, that’s where the sweet spot is, if you get it right.

So, yeah, there is a focus on children. And certainly “All I Can Ever Own” is set, in my mind, in the car on the way home from the hospital with this new human being that you are about to really draw into yourself and get to know. And then, the inevitable process of letting it go, as well — that’s a fascinating theme, to my mind.

The new record starts with “Magic Piano,” and the album title, “Gravity Stairs,” takes its name from one of the lyrics. It feels like a slightly tricky song, in a way — tricky, but catchy, which is sort of your way.

Yeah — through life. I think it’s representative of a certain mentality that we have always had, and just with this record, of having some twists and turns and freedom in the way that the instruments are expressing themselves. I think the way Nick and Liam were playing together was like a really melodic little dance. The bass is particularly melodic in that song. They’re unusual chords, and the shifts from minor to major allow some really unusual atmospheres to emerge. It had an unusual structure that took us a while to figure out… I don’t know if I’ve told you too much or not enough!

It’s in the tradition of your unusual chord changes that feel sort of inevitable and sort of surprising at the same time. That feels like a particular gift you have.

I’m with you. I like that too. … The title “Magic Piano” comes from a children’s radio show — I don’t know if you knew that — but it’s just a title. There’s a really great little kids’ story about a kid who hates practicing piano, and his piano starts to talk to him, and then he becomes able to play incredible things on his piano because the piano is sort of doing it all. And so some of the theme was sparked by that. But then, it is a genuinely a genuine love song to my piano. It’s also got other things to it, about music in general — just the effort to achieve lightness and elevation, and how magical that the whole thing is. I suppose I’m also stating my absolute devotion to melody as the lead — how it takes the lead part in my own relationship with music.

A common characteristic of many of your songs is the dance between the light and the dark. They can be bright and cheerful and then there is this undercurrent of doubt that might just become prevalent in the bridge or something, like in “Something So Strong.” So in a new song like “All That I Can Ever Own,” it’s upbeat and positive in a way, but suddenly we get “I might push her away if I’m not careful.” That feels so Neil Finn, in a way, to have that little turn where it doesn’t totally subvert the song, but there’s this sense of how things could go wrong.

To go from the sublime to the business-like… you were in headlines recently with making a deal with Primary Wave for your publishing, which is the kind of deal so many songwriters of a certain stature and catalog are making. Is there like a level of security in that it sort of allows you to really follow your arrow wherever it leads, without having to worry about being as commercial at every moment?

Security’s not quite the right word for me. Simplicity is definitely part of it, and the idea that people really do care about my songs. I wouldn’t have ventured forth if I didn’t sense a genuine desire for them to really make the songs work on a broad basis. The idea they’re out there working for them is gonna be a benefit to me, to the band, and hopefully the songs themselves. And I have no obligations to manage the business of them, which in a way is the burdensome part. You know, as much as people say, “Ah, you’ve got to own your songs” and all that sort of stuff, it actually just means you’re hiring accountants and getting daily correspondence about how songs should be used, how splits should be administered, commissions paid, all that sort of stuff. I’m giving you a fairly comprehensive description of my thinking. But there’s something really lovely and simple about having somebody else taking care of it, and I’m confident they’re taking care of it in a really good way. So I’ll just get on and sing them and, you know, they’re out there in the world anyway. They belong to everybody, in a way. But somebody’s taking care of it.

I’ve got big aspirations for what I might do with the money that they’ve given me as well. I want to do really good things with that, so it gives me an opportunity to reach a little bit further than I could do. I’ve done well and it’s not that I feel like I’m gonna run out of money — that was not my motivation. But I think I can do good things with that money, while I’m got the energy to make good things happen, you know?
