The French Quarter: New Orleans oldest neighborhood . Established in 1718, the French Quarter, is perhaps America’s oldest neighborhood. It should be at the top of everyone that’s visiting New Orleans list. The French Quarter is a place of constant change, settled by the French, ruled by the Spanish, occupied by the Americans, and the second-largest port of entry for Italian immigrants in the 19th century. In the 20th century, it became a haven for artists, musicians, and bohemians. Then one of the hottest tourist destinations in the world. Often looking down on for being so “touristy” The French Quarter might be the oldest neighborhood in the United States. It has been continually occupied since the cities founding in 1718 and it features countless surviving examples of intact 19th century architecture. After our free tour by foot in New Orleans’ French Quarter, it will become apparent why New Orleans is Americas’ Most Interesting City.

Thorough without overwhelming amounts of info, fun facts and context was on point! Katrina was very knowledgable and listened and answered questions very thoroughly. We learned a brief history of New Orleans that brought us to the current state of architecture in the district...
![nola tours new orleans tripdvisor logo](https://nolatours.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/tripadvisor-logo-150x150.png)
My husband and I did a tour with Josh on our last day in New Orleans. We had been in the French Quarter for a few days and walked past so many of the buildings that we talked about on the tour. Learning the history about not only New Orleans but also the architecture from a knowledgeable and kind tour guide was a great way to end our trip! Thanks again Josh!!
Exemplary architectural and historical walking tours. Did the Garden District Architecture tour with Katrina; was well organized, well paced, engaging, informative and fun. Katrina was an authority on New Orleans and Louisiana history, the arts and architecture of the city, and was able to convey it in a fun, educational, and engaging way...
Professional, engaging and fun. Katrina (yes, she’s aware of the irony) is an amazing guide to New Orleans. She draws you in with engaging social history, then goes deeply into the rich architectural analysis, making sense of some complex stories with intelligence and humor. I am an architectural historian, teacher and tour guide (in NYC), and I found Katrina to be among the best guides I have had the pleasure to follow.
If you have any hesitation about the tour because you aren't that "in" to architecture--leave them behind. Of course, there is a lot about architecture on the tour, but the tour is really about the culture, the history, and the epic drama of New Orleans that is reflected in its architecture. Gray had an encyclopedic knowledge of the subject, but relayed it in a personable way. It happened to be my birthday, so some would ask, "Really? A walking tour on your birthday?" Yep. One of my best birthday presents ever.
Katrina has a passion for her adopted city, giving us an informative, entertaining tour of the Garden District, including the Lafayette cemetery. She increased our appreciation of the city and its inhabitants tenfold. Her historical, architectural and current knowledge of the area was both broad and detailed. She answered all of our New Orleans questions thoughtfully and in detail. You can't stump this bundle of energy. She knows her stuff!
Our tour with Karen was great. She had lots of information to share and fostered a real dialog along the way. My husband who is a museum docent and pretty picky about tour guides thoroughly enjoyed this tour (high praise, indeed).

We did the Our Favorite Ghosts Tour and had the best time! Anderson was our guide and he did an excellent job. If we do another one in the future, we will ask for him again. The stories were entertaining and informative and we were all engaged throughout; even our 10 and 12 year olds. The content was the perfect level of scary for them - just scary and detailed enough. I had debated about a few different tours because we weren't in town very long and this was, without a doubt, the best choice.

Took the Sinister Criminal Intentions tour 4th of July weekend and it was a great experience. Johnathan was a great guide and able to share a ton of true modern and historic murder stories littering the French quarter. His personal experiences in Nee Orleans certainly add to the depth of color his is able to provide. Each person in our tour group was drawn in and waiting to hear more. I highly recommend this tour for your next trip to NoLa.

We took the family friendly ghost tour on a recent trip and our guide Dalvin was fantastic! The tour definitely had interesting ghost stories tailored to smaller ears but still captivating, especially with Dalvin's super engaging storytelling. We also learned a lot of history! My little one has been quoting facts and telling stories from the tour to his friends and grandparents after getting home. I think a 6 year old absorbing that much and retelling what he learned is the highest compliment for a kid friendly tour! Thanks again, Dalvin!

We have never been to NOLA and booked a morning tour to take us around the French Quarter after seeing all the good reviews. Our tour guide, Sean, was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and gave us a very good tour. It was just the two of us, so it was nice to have a small tour compared to the others we saw going around at the same time. My only critique, was the customer service part from our guide. Sean came walking up to us outside of Unique Nola and asked if I was Megan and said okay, we are going to start the tour. There was no - hello, how are you doing today, who do you have with you, or even I'm Sean and welcome to NO. The entire point of having a intimate tour is to get to know your customers and just overall friendliness. It was just as if it was let me get through this routine sprinkled with some awkward jokes throughout, and call it a day.

I am sorry Sean didn't greet you in the manner you wish. I am happy that you had a very good tour, though.

The most amazing tour I've had! We had Anderson as tour guide and he was such a gentleman. He was so knowledgeable about NOLA's rich history and brought us to amazing spots around town, each with its own story. Anderson really brought the stories to life with his storytelling and charm. If you're a first timer or even a local, highly recommend taking the 8pm Lewd Spirits tour. A great combo of spirits of the liquid and spooky kinds.

The spooky family ghost tour was described as good for kids 5 and up. It was not good for our 7 year old nor did it describe kid friendly ghosts. When the guide began talking about abortions and experiments performed by a doctor on kidnapped girls in one of the historic buildings, we knew it was time for our child to leave. The tour needs to be changed to reflect the description more accurately. The tour guide himself was lovely and had a great 'spooky' vibe and was very friendly and energetic - but the tour did not match up for the kids.

It sounds like you were on Our Favorite Ghost Tour, not the Spooky Family Tour. Both tours are for all ages. Spooky Family is G-rated, and Our Favorite Ghosts is PG. Sorry for the confusion.

I would give this group 100 stars if I could. We got very lucky and were the only people on our tour. Dane was incredible and gave us so much information about the houses, styles of homes, history of the people and town. We had so much fun. We couldn't believe how quickly 2 hours went by. Highly recommend for an informative and fun tour!

I took a tour with Mike and absolutely loved it. I learned so much about the culture and history of the French district. Mike is a walking encyclopedia and was so knowledgeable. It was just me and one other person so it almost felt like a private tour. 100% recommended especially with Mike. Incredible guy with a ton of stories! Side note, we ended up the tour at Cafe Du Monde and I didn't realize that it is a cash only establishment. The other woman on the tour gave me $20 to buy beignets and a coffee. While this has nothing to do with the tour, I was touched and thankful for the good people in this world and wanted to recognize that.

Dane Rhoades is the best tour guide! We came on a couples trip and the girls wanted to do a true crime tour. The guys came along for support, but by the end of our tour they were SOLD. Dane was engaging, funny, and accommodating. His story telling skills kept us interested the entire time! Would highly recommend this company.

The Perfect New Orleans 2 Day Itinerary
Looking for the perfect new orleans 2 day itinerary .
Dotti Mazga of Travel Oasis shares her New Orleans 2 day itinerary in this guest post to help you plan your visit!
New Orleans is one heck of a city – it doesn’t have a million nicknames for nothing! I’ve spent over a week in NOLA, enjoying different tours and activities and getting to know this city intimately. New Orleans is amazing and to help you can get the most out of it, I’ve crafted the perfect 2-day itinerary for you.
It will take you to some of the more traditional New Orleans sights, but also to some off-the-beaten-track areas. You’ll be guided toward lots of music and eating your bodyweight in delicious Southern food. But don’t worry, you’ll walk it off by exploring the very best that the Big Easy has to offer.

New Orleans 2 Day Itinerary: Quick View
From walking tours to boat cruises, there’s a lot going on in this New Orleans 2 day itinerary. Here’s a quick overview:
Day 1: French Quarter, Garden District, Ghost Tour
Day 2: Treme Neighborhood, Boat Cruise, Jazz on Frenchmen
Your New Orleans 2 Day Itinerary
From the French Quarter to the Bywater , I’ve seen it all and am here to help you maximize your visit. Make sure you have some comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and a bottle of water. Let’s go!
Breakfast at Ruby Slipper
Ruby Slipper is one of New Orlean’s most popular brunch spots, and for good reason – their breakfast is to die for. Try the breakfast tacos, but be warned: they are seriously huge.
Start your New Orleans trip off at the Canal Street location of Ruby Slipper, so you can be close to the rest of the morning’s activities.
Stroll the French Quarter
After a big breakfast, your first destination is the historic French Quarter which is New Orlean’s prime tourist destination.
Take your time strolling through the Quarter as you take in the beautiful architecture along the narrow, cobblestone alleys. Noteworthy are the well-preserved Creole cottages with wrought-iron balconies.
Established by French colonists in 1718, this neighborhood is the oldest in New Orleans (and indeed, one of the oldest in the entire country).
An obvious place to visit within the French Quarter is Bourbon Street, a bustling thoroughfare of historic buildings, eclectic shops and touristy bars.
Jackson Square, backed by the stunning St. Louis Cathedral, is one of the neighborhood’s biggest landmarks. Inside the square you’ll find street performers, artists selling their work and locals hanging out.
Want to get to know the NOLA food scene? Check out this French Quarter Food Tour !
Enjoy Chicory Coffee and Beignets at Cafe Du Monde
Take a break at one of the city’s biggest institutions, Cafe Du Monde. It’s on Decatur Street, just up from Jackson Square. You’ll know you’re in the right place by the massive line outside!
While it’s always busy and you may have to wait for a table, it’s well worth it. Grabbing an iced chicory coffee and digging into sugary beignets at Cafe Du Monde is a must-do activity in New Orleans.
Cafe Du Monde is also a great place to people-watch, and you’re likely to have some street performers entertaining you while you indulge.
Browse the French Market
After that well-deserved coffee and sugar break, head down the street to the French Market. This is one of the oldest public markets in the US.
Stretching across six blocks, French Market is a labyrinth of stalls and shops. You’ll find fresh produce, seafood, local crafts and souvenirs.
Since it’s New Orleans, expect some street performers and music here as well!
Have a Po’Boy for Lunch at Johnny’s Po-Boys
For lunch, have your first taste of New Orleans fare at Johnny’s Po-Boys, a long-standing New Orleans restaurant. It’s an easy, 10-minute walk down Decatur Street.
While the menu offers a range of Southern specialties, it really is the po’boy you’re here for – a sandwich made from French bread and packed with a variety of fillings ranging from fried seafood to roast beef.
My tip? Get it ‘fully dressed’ (i.e., packed to the brim with sides).
Join a Garden District Tour
After lunch, head over to the Garden District , just a short streetcar ride away.
Lined with massive oak trees, meticulously manicured gardens and stately mansions, the Garden District exudes elegance and opulence. Like the French Quarter, it’s known for its architecture, showcasing a blend of Greek Revival, Italianate and Victorian styles.
The Garden District is famous for its walking tours , so be sure to sign up for one to get the most out of the area. You’ll learn about the history and will spot some famous mansions. Nicholas Cage, Sandra Bullock and Anne Rice all own real estate here.
Book a Garden District Walking Tour
Walk Down Magazine Street
After your tour of the Garden District, it’s time to stroll down Magazine Street, one of New Orleans’ best thoroughfares.
Magazine Street is six miles long and filled with vintage stores, novelty shops, bakeries, restaurants, cafes and bars.
It’s always bustling and has a great vibe. Take some time to browse through the shops and stop for a drink along the way. This area is not super touristy and is mostly filled with locals, so it’s a bit more authentic and quirky (to say the least).
Tuck Into a Crawfish Dinner at Deanie’s Seafood
After all that exploring, it’s time for a big dinner. Nothing says New Orleans like a crawfish dinner, so make reservations for Deanie’s Seafood, one of the most iconic restaurants in town.
Dare to Take an Evening Ghost Tour
New Orleans is said to be the most haunted city in the US. This is because it’s not only old (over 300 years old), but has had a savage and tumultuous past.
Finish your first day in New Orleans with an interactive ghost hunting tour through the French Quarter, where many ghosts and spirits are said to reside. While there are plenty of ghost tours in New Orleans, this one is unique because it lets you try your hand at ghost hunting firsthand!
Whether or not you believe, this is a fabulous way to tap into the city’s culture and have a bit of fun.
Book the Interactive Ghost Hunting Tour
Check Out Bourbon Street
If you want to keep going after taht, and don’t mind crowds or debauchery, then head to Bourbon Street to finish your first night with some revelry!
Alternatively, for a calmer taste of Bourbon street visit with an off-peak guided tour .
Breakfast at Daisy Dukes
Start your day with yet another New Orleans breakfast institution: Daisy Dukes. The breakfast here (served all day) is the stuff of legends. Think pancakes, hearty omelets and shrimp and grits – yum!
Join a Historic Trem é Walking Tour
Today you’re stepping off the beaten path and into my favorite part of New Orleans: Tremé (pronounced, Trem-ay) .
Known as the oldest African-American neighborhood in the United States, Tremé is steeped in history, music and tradition. It was founded by Free People of Color and has been home to some of the city’s most famous musicians.
The Tremé walking tour is incredible and still ranks as my favorite thing I did in New Orleans. There are not as many visitors here, and you’ll get to see a different (yet integral) side to NOLA.
The tours start at Armstrong Park and stop at key locations in the neighborhood. Along the way, you’ll learn about the history of jazz in the city.
While Tremé has had a previously rough reputation, it is now completely safe, especially during the day.
Tremé is also home to the majority of the city’s famous second-line parades, so if you’re visiting on a Sunday, you’ll likely get to run into one!
Book the Tremé Walking Tour
Have Lunch at Lil Dizzy’s
After your walking tour, stroll over to Lil Dizzy’s for lunch. This is a very local, very popular spot so expect it to be busy.
It’s all Southern classics here, but particularly famous is the fried chicken.
Cruise the Mississippi on a Boat
After all that walking, it’s time to put your feet up and relax!
Finish your afternoon in style with a boat cruise on the Mississippi River. You’ll get to see some of the city’s most iconic landmarks from a different vantage point.
Boat tours leave regularly from the riverfront area adjacent to Woldenberg Park and last around two hours. It’s a perfect way to spend your afternoon after a lot of walking around.
Book a Steamboat Natchez Jazz Cruise
Dine at Commander’s Palace
Have dinner tonight at Commander’s Palace, one of the best restaurants in town. This place is extremely popular, so do make reservations well in advance.
Visit Jazz Clubs on Frenchmen Street
Finish off your New Orleans holiday in true NOLA fashion – with some jazz on Frenchmen Street! This is an authentic way to have a night out in New Orleans and is very different from Bourbon Street.
Located in one of the hippest areas of New Orleans, the Marigny, Frenchmen Street is legendary for its jazz performances. This small stretch is filled with back-to-back jazz clubs, each hosting world-class musicians multiple times a day.
The biggest names to pop into are the Spotted Cat, Blue Nile and Snug Harbour, but there are so many more to explore as well. Follow your ears to what sounds best to you.
While you’re in the area, stop by the Frenchmen Street Art Bazaar as well. It’s held nightly from 6pm to midnight.

When is the best time to visit New Orleans?
Late winter into early Spring (February to April) is the best time to visit New Orleans. The weather is pleasant and perfect for strolling around the city. The humidity is relatively low this time of year, and the city is buzzing as the days get warmer.
It’s also festival season and there is a lot happening in the Big Easy at this time including Mardi Gras, French Quarter Fest and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
However, this is also high season in New Orleans, so you will have to plan accordingly as accommodation can book out quickly!

10 Black History Tours and Experiences in New Orleans

New Orleans is one of the most vibrant cities in the world—full of rich history, diverse heritage, and mouthwatering cuisine . And the city’s Black communities and cultures have long been a driving force in shaping New Orleans, which was founded in 1718, into the city we know today. Visitors who only hit Bourbon Street for a hurricane cocktail will largely miss out on the unique and memorable Black experiences that can deepen understanding and appreciation of the very pulse of New Orleans.
From the influence of West and Central Africans who were trafficked to the city through the transatlantic slave trade, to the influence of African Americans born and raised there more recently, there are many tours and experiences uplifting New Orleans’ African and African-American history and culture. From a Black ghost tour (which is incredibly rare to find, due to lack of detailed documentation around Black people in America’s antebellum), to a full day cooking experience centered around the many enslaved cooks that helped the city operate, these tours are sure to ground you in the richness of New Orleans through the city’s most exquisite treasure—her people.

Le Musée de f.p.c.
“Free people of color” (FPC) or gens de couleur libres , was once a legal designation in Louisiana for Black people who were free that included those who were born free and those who were manumitted before the Civil War. Archives show evidence of their presence in New Orleans starting in 1722, and although free Black communities existed all over the US, New Orleans had one of the largest, most economically empowered FPC populations. Le Musée de f.p.c. is one of America’s few attractions dedicated exclusively to preserving the material culture of, and telling the story of, free people of color. The stately home the exhibits sit in is full of historic documents, art, furniture, and photographs that chronicle the rich community of free people of color in New Orleans.
“The Blackest” Ghost Tour
On this walking tour through the French Quarter, discover the haunted history of New Orleans through an Afrocentric lens. Scholars and High Priestesses of Louisiana Plantation Vodou, Malika Hadley Freydberg and Eshé Bleu, lead this tour through the French Quarter, highlighting the experiences of Black people, both enslaved and free. Their lives and deaths are shared through vivid storytelling based on years of archival research and stories passed down in the oral tradition. Each stop along the tour is a location where sightings of their ghosts have occurred throughout the years. From a tragedy at a hotel ballroom to the horrors of the LaLaurie mansion, this tour weaves the supernatural with the historical for a two hour long journey through time.
Tremé Food Tour
Join Hollis Burton, a former Mardi Gras/Second Line King of Tremé, on a walking food tour and bar crawl through the streets of Tremé, the oldest African American neighborhood in the country. On this tour, experience the richness of Tremé’s African American cuisine, from the best seafood restaurants to delectable street fare. Be sure to come hungry! This tour includes very generous samplings of each dish. As you eat, Hollis shares the history of the neighborhood, and how community members are working to preserve its culture in the present day. The tour ends with a delicious daiquiri at one of Tremé’s many jazz clubs.
The Grand Tour’s Hidden History Tour
Louisiana was home to the largest slave revolt in the US, when approximately 500 enslaved people organized across the River Parishes with the plan to descend upon New Orleans and take the city. Through walking and bus tours, writer, researcher, and historian Leon Waters shares information about Black history in New Orleans, with a particular focus on liberation, in both a historical and present-day context. With full day and half day options, this tour includes visits to local neighborhoods, universities, and historic sights, with introductions to Black artists, music, and cuisine.
Gallier House
Hermann-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses
The discourse around slavery tends to focus on the horrors of plantation slavery. In contrast, HGGHH focuses on urban enslavement in New Orleans, centering the experiences of enslaved people in homes throughout the French Quarter. Here, you can tour the home, interact with the database of enslaved individuals and learn more about their lives, and engage in various live events. HGGHH also offers full and half day live cooking demonstrations that take you through the daily life of an enslaved chef in the French Quarter, preparing open hearth meals using the same techniques that would have been used in the antebellum era.
All Bout Dat Black heritage and jazz tour
Jazz singer and historian Mikhala Iversen founded All Bout Dat Tours in 2013 to offer African American-led tours of Black life in New Orleans, being intentional about Black stories being told by Black people. Pulling from West African and African American tenets of spirituality, this tour uplifts resistance and resilience, and always includes the power of singing. Iversen also occasionally offers a live jazz and Creole dinner experience.
Bounce, Dance, Twerk, and Walk tour
The New Orleans Bounce Dance has been a part of Louisiana Hip Hop history since 1980. This walking tour starts with a crash course in Bounce history, including nuances that entered the dance after Hurricane Katrina. Self-described “Culture-Bearer and Fierce Fun Leader” Mika Terry leads this high-energy tour through the Saint Claude Arts District, including jello shots, a dance challenge, and an overall good time. Bring comfortable shoes and get ready to learn some new moves, check out local graffiti art, and hit historic sites. The tour ends in front of the world famous Kermit's Tremé Mother-in-Law Lounge, where you will put all of your moves together!
Backstreet Cultural Museum
The Backstreet Cultural Museum holds the world’s most comprehensive collection related to New Orleans’s African American community traditions, including Mardi Gras Indians, jazz funerals, social aid and pleasure clubs, Baby Dolls, and Skull and Bone gangs. Tour the exhibits here to observe the intricacy of Mardi Gras costumes up close, and tons of other splendid regalia that has been collected over a period of decades. If you’re lucky, you can also catch one of the museum’s public performances!

In 1823, a classic Creole townhouse was constructed in the French Quarter by the first licensed pharmacist in the US. Today, it houses a collection of artifacts documenting the history of pharmacy and medicine in the 19th and 20th centuries, with a special focus on New Orleans. Here, you can learn about medicinal techniques brought to New Orleans by enslaved and free West Africans, and further cultivated by African Americans born in Louisiana. There is also an exhibit highlighting the history of African American Pharmacy in New Orleans.
Louisiana Creole language lessons
In antebellum Louisiana, “Registre des Esclaves” (records of enslaved people), denoted enslaved people born in Louisiana as “Creole.” This was in distinct contrast from enslaved people born in an African country (in which case, the country was listed), and enslaved people born in other parts of the US (who would have been listed as “Negro”). Culturally, influences from West Africans, Europeans, and Native Americans combined to become Louisiana Creole culture. Language activist and entertainer Clif St. Laurent is reclaiming and preserving this culture through offering classes in Louisiana Creole, an endangered language. And you don’t need to leave your home to take part in them—they’re also offered virtually.
