OPIHR spiced gin is inspired by a love of travel and discovery, so in celebration of this we introduce The OPIHR Drinks Atlas; a curation of OPIHR cocktails, each designed to celebrate one of our ten botanicals and the location from which we source them along the Ancient Spice Route.

The ancient Spice Route

Like the explorers in days of old, we too have ventured far to seek out the exotic botanicals and spices that create OPIHR's Spiced London Dry Gin.

Malaysian Cubeb Berries

The flavoursome Cubeb came to Europe via India through trade in Arabia. It provides an aromatic pepperiness and camphor notes that sing in harmony with the juniper.

Indian Cardamom

When you open a bottle of Opihr Gin, the first note that will hit your nose is sweet and fragrant cardamom; a real stand-out botanical in our gin.

Indian Tellicherry Black Pepper

Provides peppery finish on the tongue. Tellicherry comes from grafted Malabar plants grown on Mount Tellicherry on the Malabar Coast in in the state of Kerala.

Indian Ginger

The warming heat from the ginger botanical adds elevated spice notes with hints of sweetness. OPIHR is therefore perfectly paired with ginger ale for our signature G&G serve.

Turkish Cumin

Nothing reminds us more of the Orient than the flavour of cumin. The Ancient Spice Route leads through Turkey which is a trading port connection East and West. It does not get much more OPIHR than that.

Turkish Grapefruit Peel

Sharp bursts of citrus from the grapefruit peel make our OPIHR Gin so well-balanced, complementing the herbal notes for a fresh, clean finish.

Italian Juniper

OPIHR would not be a gin without this core ingredient. Hand-picked in Italy, it provides the basis for our herbal and refreshing spiced gin.

German Angelica Root

An essential part of the holy trinity of gin. Angelica root gives OPIHR Gin finely balanced bitter and earthy notes. The Spice Route leads along many unexpected places.

Moroccan Coriander

Along with juniper and angelica, coriander builds the holy trinity of gin and contributes to OPIHR’s distinct flavour profile and explosion of flavours.

Spanish Orange Peel

Sweet and bitter orange peel ripened by the Spanish sun creates a flavour balance that works perfectly with all our other hand-selected herbs and spices.

One of three Regional Edition expressions from the Ophir Gin range, which were inspired by the merchants who would travel ancient trade routes selling various spices. This one is the European Edition, and it brings the addition of Cascarilla bark to the Ophir recipe, further building out the fragrant and herbaceous flavour profile. The European Edition blends fragrant myrrh and the distinct aromatic bitterness of cascarilla bark. Inspired by Venice's 500+ year rich spice trade history and the Italian love affair with cascarilla bark used to create highly aromatic tonics, bitters and vermouths. This is a bold, savoury-led spiced London Dry gin with balanced bitter notes and mixes perfectly with sweet vermouth and Campari to create a spiced twist on a classic Negroni cocktail. While cascarilla bark is not native to Europe, it is present in any bitter liqueurs in the south of the continent and adds an aromatic and fragrant twist to OPIHR's flavour profile. The powerful bursts of Persian black lemons are heightened further by the zesty citrus flavours of Timut peppers, making the Arabian Edition a carefully crafted and perfectly balanced London Dry gin, elevated through the marriage of citrus and spice.

London Dry Gin OPIHR European Edition

The European Edition blends fragrant myrrh and the distinct aromatic bitterness of cascarilla bark.

• Aroma : A bold savoury-led gin with balanced burnt orange and bitter notes. It has smooth soft perfume notes with mature rounded orange notes and a woody, earthy finish.
• Taste : A smooth, rounded London Dry Gin; soft camphor balanced with sweet smoky liquorice-type woody notes and a clean finish.

INGREDIENTS

• 35ml Opihr European Edition Gin
• 25ml Sweet vermouth
• 25ml Campari
• Orange peel garnish

Stir down. Serve over ice in rocks glass. Garnish with orange peel.

Cascarilla bark.

Our Spiced Negroni is a classic enhanced by the spiced blend of botanicals within our European Edition. The bitterness of the Cascarilla Bark botanical is delicately balanced within the Negroni to create the perfect aromatic sensation.

A 70cl bottle of the wonderful Opihr Spices of the Orient Gin, accompanied by a beautifully crafted globe glass etched with a map of the Ancient Spice Route to discover the journey as you sip.

OPIHR Spices of the Orient is a unique London Dry Gin made using hand-picked botanicals from the Ancient Spice Route, including spicy cubeb berries from Indonesia, cardamom and Tellicherry black pepper from India and coriander from Morocco.

What Does it Taste Like?

This characterful spiced gin exudes unique flavours of the Ancient Spice Route incorporated by hand-picked botanicals for a smooth, rich gin with bursts of exotic spices and clean citrus balance. 

Key notes of cardamom provides the first scent of the nose, with Tellicherry black pepper providing warm, earthy background notes, balanced with orange and grapefruit peel for a unique citrus balance and elevated gin experience. 

About Opihr Spices Of the Orient With Globe Glass

OPIHR Spices of the Orient Gin is crafted with a selection of exotic hand-picked botanicals, carefully chosen by OPIHR’s Master Distiller, including spicy Cubeb berries from Indonesia, Black Pepper from India and Coriander from Morocco.

The botanicals in Opihr Gin make the journey to their final destination, the oldest distillery in England, where quality gin has been traditionally distilled, using the same London Dry Gin method, since 1761. Here the botanicals are married with fine English spirit to produce an uniquely spiced gin.

Ophir is a region famed for its wealth and riches which prospered during the reign of King Solomon. The King regularly received cargoes of gold, silver and spices from Ophir and whilst its exact location remains a mystery, it is thought to have been in the Orient along the Ancient Spice Route – a network of sea routes that link the East with the West.

The routes stretch from the West coast of Japan through the Islands of Indonesia, around India and the Middle East – and from there, across the Mediterranean and into Europe. Traditionally merchants would travel thousands of miles along the route, trading exotic spices and botanicals from distant lands.
