Cameron Robbins, a Louisiana resident, was celebrating his high school graduation when he was reportedly dared to jump overboard on a cruise.

EXCLUSIVE: A group of students tried to physically stop Cameron Robbins from jumping off a Bahamas cruise ship last week after he was reportedly dared to take the leap, Fox News Digital has learned.

Robbins, 18, was on Blackbeard's Revenge sunset cruise with several hundred high school graduates from Baton Rouge, Louisiana , and jumped overboard into what authorities called "shark-infested" waters near the uninhabited Athol Island, northeast of Nassau, around 9:30 p.m. on May 24.

A woman whose son was friends with Robbins and on the boat at the time told Fox News Digital that several students tried to grab Robbins before he took the plunge, but he broke free.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said many of the students were part of a close-knit community that was in shock, disbelief, exhausted and cold as the U.S. Coast Guard , Royal Bahamas Defence Force and United Cajun Navy searched the waters until about 3 a.m.

The small, pirate-lookalike cruise ship was anchored throughout the night, and the students were stuck at sea near the uninhabited island in what Royal Bahamas Defense Force Commodore Raymond King called "shark-infested waters."

Experts have told Fox News Digital there is a vast array of marine life, including dolphins, tiger sharks and bull sharks in those waters that feed off the scraps from the boats.

"This was a booze cruise, and they were on their way back when this happened," the one student's mother said. "My son texted me when it happened, saying, ‘Cameron jumped off. They can’t find him.' They were out there until 2, 3 in the morning.

"It was terrible weather that night. The kids were cold, wet and traumatized. The girls were in bikinis and bathing suits. The guys were giving them their shirts. It was a bad time to bring drunk 18-year-olds out into waters near this island where there's nothing."

The two-day, 325-mile search for Robbins was called off Friday night. "We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins’ family and friends," the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.

The viral cellphone video of Robbins in the water, which was seen over 10 million times, went through virtually every type of edit on social media after a speculation-fueled narrative that Robbins encountered a shark gripped people's curiosities.

The video appears to show a shadowy object in the water move toward the recent high school grad, who was swimming toward a life preserver before changing direction.

However, the cellphone footage is too dark and chaotic to definitively show what happened, and the theory is no longer officially being investigated at the request of Robbins' family, Brian Trascher, spokesperson for the United Cajun Navy, told Fox News Digital on Friday.

"None of the experts consulted can definitely say what's in the video due to the quality and length of the video," Trascher said. "The Robbins family has requested that we not entertain that theory any longer, so our official position is that we don't know what happened while Cam was in the water."

Authorities officially designated Robbins as "lost at sea," which is the same as a death certificate, and a memorial service for Robbins will be held Sunday at Broadmoor United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge.

The cruise was not sanctioned by University Laboratory School, where Robbins had just graduated. It was planned by an independent company called GradWeek , which released the following statement to the media last week:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Robbins Family during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for the Robbins family’s privacy, we feel it’s inappropriate to comment on the details surrounding the night of the incident.

"Bahamian Authorities have been conducting a thorough investigation of the incident and can provide the most accurate information once they have completed their investigation."

Kevin George, the director of the school, told local news outlet WBRZ that Robbins was a "special kid."

He has "been here throughout his entire educational career. He's an athlete, great kid, great smile, great head of hair. Just one of the kids you're so proud of when they cross the stage," George said.

As Louisiana high-school grad Cameron Robbins vanished beneath shark-infested waters after jumping from a boat in the Bahamas, someone yelled, “Bye, bye!” at the teen, according to haunting video.

The Baton Rouge 18-year-old was enjoying a sunset cruise with several hundred fellow graduates May 24 when he leaped overboard from a vessel designed to look like a pirate ship — apparently on a dare.

In chilling video of the incident that has since gone viral on social media, the baseball stand-out is seen swimming away from a life preserver bobbing near him in the dark waters as someone shouts, “This kid f–king jumped off! Oh my f–king God! Oh, shut the f–k up! Oh, bye, bye!”

The footage captures horrified onlookers on the ship frantically yelling at Robbins to “grab the buoy,” but the teen appears to swim in the opposite direction — possibly encountering a shark next to him.

In the video, a white object is seen on the left side of the screen, but the recording is too blurry and frenetic to make out exactly what it is.

A TikTok video that has been viewed more than 10 million times shows 18-year-old Cameron Robbins swimming in the waters off the Bahamas moments before vanishing without a trace.

Royal Bahamas Defense Force Commodore Raymond King has told  the Daily Mail  the the water in that area are “really shark-infested,” which has fueled the shark-attack theory.

Online viewers speculated that Robbins was bitten by one of the predators the moment the person on the boat shouted, “Bye, bye!”

The video capturing Robbins’ final moments has been viewed more than 10 millions on TikTok, and Web sleuths have edited the footage to slow it down and brighten it in a bid to shed light on what happened, but ultimately without success.

Cameron Robbins

The US Coast Guard and local Bahaman authorities spent days looking for Robbins before calling off their search last week after scouring more than 325 square miles of ocean.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins’ family and friends,” said Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Spado, Coast Guard liaison officer to the Bahamas.

Robbins, a standout baseball player, graduated from University Laboratory High School in Baton Rouge on May 21.

Three days later, Robbins and his friends joined graduates from other schools for a celebratory trip to the Bahamas, staying at the Atlantis Paradise Resort.

A few hours after checking in, Robbins and the other newly minted high-school grads boarded the Pirate’s Revenge boat for an evening pleasure cruise near the uninhabited Athol Island, located north of Nassau.

A few days after Robbins’ disappearance, his family travelled from Louisiana to the Bahamas to take part in the search and visit the area where he was last seen, before returning home Sunday.

A memorial service for Robbins will be held Sunday afternoon in Baton Rouge.

passenger jumps off cruise ship on dare

A video has surfaced showing boat passengers in the Bahamas moments after an 18-year-old Louisiana star baseball player jumped off the ship in response to a dare, resulting in a fatal outcome.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Cameron Robbins, who had just graduated from University Laboratory School (U-High), jumped off the boat as a dare on May 24. A video obtained by DailyMail showed Robbins splashing in the water near the boat before he vanished.

At the time, Robbins and students from other schools were on a graduation trip at the Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau.

At 11:30 p.m. on May 24, Royal Bahamas Defence Force personnel contacted watchstanders from Coast Guard District Seven, informing them that someone had fallen off the Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise ship.

According to a witness, crews made multiple unsuccessful attempts to locate Robbins as the boat, resembling a pirate ship, stayed in the area for several hours. On Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard called the search off , according to CBS 9.

Video shows chaos after teen jumps from cruise, search called off, bahamas nightmare vid shows chaos after teen jumps from cruise ... search called off.

A multi-day search for a Louisiana teen who jumped from a sunset cruise in the Bahamas has come to its tragic end -- and the last known sighting of him was caught on harrowing video.

Footage has surfaced showing 18-year-old Cameron Robbins -- who'd just graduated high school in Baton Rouge -- swimming in the open seas at night near Athol Island last week ... where he was on a sunset cruise with a bunch of his peers celebrating their achievement.

Word is Cameron went overboard on his own accord, and not just that -- but, apparently, it was on a dare. In the clip, you can kinda tell his buddies were getting a kick out of it.

That is until he vanished behind the boat and out of view of everyone, who began screaming at him to grab a life preserver that'd been thrown to him -- which was pretty far away, and he didn't end up reaching it. Once he disappeared, everyone began to panic.

Since he went missing, a multi-day search was undertaken by both Bahamian authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard -- but Robbins was never found, and the search has now been called off after several unsuccessful days of scouring the area for any sign of him.

It sounds like Cameron is presumed dead, as the Coast Guard issued a statement saying ... "We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins' family and friends." His family flew into the Bahamas last week, and prayer vigils have been held for him for a few days now.

His family has also spoken out ... "The Bahamas government has called off the rescue for Cameron and we are returning to Baton Rouge. We want to thank the Bahamas government, the U.S. Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy, and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us. In this time of grief, we thank our family, friends, and well-wishers for granting us the privacy we need to properly remember our son and mourn his loss."

Teenage baseball star, 18, missing after jumping off Bahamas cruise ship 'as a dare'

Cameron is missing at sea after jumping overboard

  • 22:07, 28 May 2023

A teenage baseball star is missing at sea after jumping off a cruise "as a dare", it is claimed.

Cameron Robbins, 18, from Louisiana, US, was on a graduate boating excursion in the Bahamas on May 24 when he was dared to jump overboard, according to witnesses.

The teen, who had just graduated days ago from the University Laboratory School in Baton Rogue, was filmed jumping into the water, just a few feet from the boat, before disappearing.

The US Coast Guard had been searching for Cameron since he was reported missing on Wednesday but the search was called off on Friday night.

Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Spado, Coast Guard liaison officer to the Bahamas, revealed multiple agency's had been deployed to look for Cameron.

He said: "U.S. Coast Guard District Seven deployed multiple search and rescue assets in response to an agency assistance request from our partners in the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.

"'Our Coast Guard command centre and aircrews based in Miami supported RBDF search and rescue efforts since the initial report Wednesday evening, and continued through Friday evening.

'We were informed by the RBDF this evening that they were suspending the active search efforts pending further developments, and were not requesting further Coast Guard assistance after notifying the Robbins family.

"We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins' family and friends."

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the teenager's family who are going through an "unimaginable situation."

The fundraiser said: "Cameron's mother, Shari is an indescribably amazing teacher and her kindness and devotion has helped countless children throughout her career.

"Please donate as you can and share this fundraiser to support her and her family through this unimaginable situation.

"Devastated family continued to pray and hope for Cameron's return: 'Please continue to pray for Cameron, Cassie, Cole, Shari and Will. My heart is so heavy."

Cameron's baseball coach paid tribute to the teenager and called him a "fierce competitor."

Justin Morgan said: "Cameron is a kid who is truly loved by his teammates, teachers, and fellow classmates.

"He is a fierce competitor on the baseball field. He is a hard worker both on and off of the playing field.

"Our school community is struggling right now but hoping for the very best.

"Our thoughts and prayers have been and will remain with the Robbins family during this difficult time."

University Lab School Director Kevin George said Cameron attended the school for all thirteen years of his education.

They are also providing support to students who are struggling with his disappearance.

Mr George said: "The University Lab School Community is praying for the best possible outcome of this situation.

"In times like these, we must come together and support each other. Words fall short of expressing the worry our entire school community is feeling.

"'Extra counsellors will be available on campus to speak with students and faculty who are struggling to process this news.

"Our thoughts are with the Robbins family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts as well."

(VIDEO) Louisiana Teen Reportedly Jumps Off Bahamas Cruise Ship On A Dare, Coast Guard Calls Off Search

A shocking new video shows a missing Louisiana teen who allegedly jumped off a boat on a dare while on a high school graduation trip to the Bahamas.

A Lousiana State University (LSU) spokesperson confirmed to WBRZ that 18-year-old Cameron Robbins fell from the Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise at around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. The U.S. Coast Guard  reportedly called off a search for the boy on Friday.

Missing Louisiana Teen Cameron Robbins Jumped From Boat On Dare, New Video Shows

Robbins had been celebrating with fellow University High Lab School students at the time of the incident.

Authorities with the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) and US Coast Guard launched a widespread, two-day search operation. Helicopters and surveillance aircraft ultimately failed to locate the missing teen.

The search was officially suspended on Friday.

Meanwhile, a haunting new video emerged Monday, appearing to show the chaotic scene on the boat immediately following Robbins’ jumping ship.

Video obtained by WBRZ shows Robbins swimming in the ocean without a life jacket on, dressed only in swim trunks. Fellow onlookers yelled in response.

“This kid f*****g jumped off!” one person can be heard shouting. “Oh, my f*****g god. Oh, shut the f**k  up. Oh, bye…bye… Oh … s**t!” another says.

Others yell out: “Grab the buoy.. grab the buoy.”

According to witnesses, the video shows Robbins drifting in the other direction away from the body before disappearing entirely into the vast ocean waters.

U.S. Coast Guard, Royal Bahamas Defence Force End Rescue Mission Friday After Two-Day Search

The cruise ship initially searched for several hours for the missing student without any success. That’s when the Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Defence Force launched their similarly failed search-and-rescue mission.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force is investigating claims that Robbins jumped from the ship on a dare.

Robbins fell from the boat near Athol Island, northeast of Nassau, the US Coast Guard said.

The teens’ family flew out to the Bahamas on Thursday, according to WAFB .

They said they were returning to Raton Rouge when the search was called off.

“We want to thank the Bahamas government, the US Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy, and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us,” the statement read , according to USA Today .

Additionally, the family thanked the public for extending them “privacy” during their time to remember their son and “mourn his loss.”

Family, School Staffers Remember Robbins As Star Athlete, “Fierce Competitor”

Meanwhile, friends and former teachers honored Robbins during a prayer circle at the school last week.

Justin Morgan, the teens’ high school baseball coach, told CNN Robbins was a “fierce competitor.” The teen had played third baseman and pitcher, Morgan added.

Robbins had attended the school for 13 years, according to Kevin George, the director of LSU’s College of Human Sciences and Education.

“He’s an athlete, great kid, great smile, great head of hair. Just one of the kids you’re so proud of when they cross the stage,” George told CNN.

People spot haunting image after missing teen jumps off cruise ship into shark-infested waters

Cameron robbins was just 18 years old when he disappeared.

Viewers watching a video of a missing teenager jumping off a cruise ship believe they spotted a haunting detail in part of the clip.

It was more than a year ago now that Cameron Robbins went missing after going on a trip to the Bahamas to celebrate his graduation in May 2023.

Robbins, who was just 18 years old, joined several friends on board the Blackbeard’s Revenge cruise on May 24, but Robbins never returned with the boat to shore.

The teen is believed to have jumped off the boat as a dare , and footage from the night actually captured the moment Robbins went overboard.

Robbins was last seen in dark waters before he completely vanished from view, sparking a huge search conducted by the US Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Defence Force.

Authorities spent several days searching for Robbins, but he was sadly presumed to have died following the incident.

Cameron Robbins is now presumed dead. (WBRZ)

After the footage of Robbins came to light, viewers began to take a closer look and notice little details in the video.

A number of people express belief that a shark had been lurking right under the boat when Robbins jumped.

"The video doesn't lie, he was attacked by a shark and taken under," one claimed.

Another added: "You can see the shark to the left of the video."

A third viewer was adamant they 'saw the fin' in the short clip.

Raymond King, Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) Commodore, confirmed the area where Robbins jumped 'is really shark infested'.

Viewers think the image was that of a 'shark'. (Reddit/QuietWest3764)

"The probability of survival decreases significantly particularly if a person did not have on a life vest and particularly if a person is perceived to be intoxicated," he said.

"I can tell you that area where an individual reportedly jumped over, it's an area that is really shark infested as well."

Robbins was described by family, friends and loved ones as 'funny and kind-hearted'. He played baseball and was described as a ‘fierce competitor’ by his coach.

Speaking to WAFB, Kevin George, the University Lab School Director, said of Robbins' disappearance: “Words fall short of expressing the worry our entire school community is feeling. Extra counselors will be available on campus to speak with students and faculty who are struggling to process this news.

"Our thoughts are with the Robbins family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts as well."

A man is missing and feared dead after reportedly falling off a Carnival Magic cruise ship off the Florida coast.

The US Coast Guard on Wednesday suspended its search for 35-year-old Ronnie Lee Peale Jr, who fell off the ship about 185 miles east of Jacksonville in the early hours of Monday.

“The decision to suspend the active search efforts pending further development is never one we take lightly. We offer our most sincere condolences to Mr. Peale’s family and friends,” Coast Guard rescue mission coordinator Lt Cmdr Christopher Hooper said.

According to his partner Jennilyn Michelle Blosser, Mr Peale was heartily enjoying the first cruise of his life when tragedy struck.

“He was the life of the party,” Ms Blosser told WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. “It just hurts too much to even type, let alone talk about it. He loved the cruise life, being able to drink, gamble, and socialize put him in his happy place. This was his first cruise and I’m sure he would have been willing to do one monthly.”

The Carnival Magic cruise ship departed from Norfolk on 25 May and was en route to the Bahamas when Mr Peale fell overboard. The ship has since returned to Norfolk.

Cameron Robbins: Search called off for teen who ‘jumped off cruise ship as a dare’

According to WTKR, the couple took the cruise to celebrate Ms Blosser’s birthday.

A spokesperson for the Carnival Cruise Line told the television station that footage from the ship shows the moment Mr Peale fell overboard.

“He was reported missing by his companion late Monday afternoon and an initial review of closed circuit security footage confirms that he leaned over the railing of his stateroom balcony and dropped into the water at approximately 4:10 am early Monday morning,” the statement read, in part.

The Cruise Line also said that its team “is providing support to the guest’s companion and traveling party who are on board.”

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, cruise officials reportedly searched the ship for a man believed to be Mr Peale without success.

“There was a security team storming each deck, each floor, concerned,” one passenger, Leevon Porter, told WTKR. “But eventually, they let everybody know that he wasn’t found.”

Ms Blosser has created a GoFundMe to help offset expenses for Mr Peale’s funeral. The page has received donations totaling just over $700 as of Tuesday afternoon.

“He is our social butterfly that was always on the move and loved to make friends with everyone,” Ms Blosser wrote on the GoFundMe page. “The cruise was definitely a place he enjoyed. I never could of imagine something like this could happen. Devastated to say the least.”

In light of the man overboard, the ship’s management decided to cancel a scheduled performance by Alexandre Pires, a well-known musician. This decision was made out of respect for the missing passenger and the ongoing search efforts.

A Brazilian Instagram influencer, that goes by the moniker FGNICO, was onboard and posted the man overboard announcement to his account .

This incident is the third of its kind on an MSC cruise ship within the last 45 days. A crew member jumped off MSC Seascape last month. Earlier this month a North American man jumped off MSC Armonia during a repositioning cruise to South America.

On Christmas Eve a passenger jumped off Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas. This latest incident marks the 17th man overboard for the cruise industry in 2023.

Authorities say the man who recently disappeared from a Carnival cruise ship appeared to have jumped overboard.

Security footage from the Carnival Glory “shows the man jumping off the cruise ship ,” according to a Tuesday night update from the Coast Guard.

The agency has officially identified the missing man as Tyler Barnett of Houma, Louisiana.

A Carnival spokesperson tells PEOPLE that footage appeared to show Barnett jumping from the ship’s Deck 4 around 1:40 a.m. local time on Monday.

“He can be seen climbing on a lifeboat and jumping from there,” the spokesperson said.

Barnett’s mother Elisha Reid told Business Insider that her daughter was previously informed that there was no footage of what happened.

In Carnival's statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson said that on Tuesday, they were "advised of the possibility of him wearing a different shirt, which allowed our security team to change the profile of the guest as we searched onboard video."

"We have informed the U.S. Coast Guard and are providing assistance to the guest’s family that was traveling with him," they added.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Family members previously said Barnett’s passenger card was swiped at the ship’s casino at 12:15 a.m., and his room just before 12:30 a.m., according to CBS affiliate WWL-TV . Carnival crew members began searching for Barnett around 7:30 a.m.

The Coast Guard said watchstanders with its New Orleans sector were alerted to the incident just after 12:30 p.m. on Monday.

So far, crews have searched more than 200 miles of water for the missing passenger, according to the agency. But adverse weather conditions have hampered the search.

"I just want answers, and I'm holding out for hope," Barnett's grandmother Dirlean Tate Mason told NBC News in a story published on Tuesday.

The Coast Guard has since narrowed its search area roughly 30 miles southwest of the Southwest Pass.

Meanwhile, Carnival Cruise Line said its Care Team “is supporting the missing guest's family on board” the ship, which "arrived today to Montego Bay, Jamaica as planned."

On Facebook, Mason said she and her family are in need of prayers as they await answers. “We are holding on to hope and prayer that he will be found safe,” she wrote. "Our hearts are breaking."

A cruise passenger on the Royal Caribbean “Icon of the Seas” cruise jumped overboard, prompting a search and rescue mission where the passenger ultimately was found dead.

The passenger jumped from the 1,200-foot-long ship shortly after it left Miami, Florida, for Honduras Sunday morning, according to a statement from the Coast Guard obtained by The New York Post.

Once people noticed the emergency, the ship immediately halted its operations and the 2,350-person crew conducted a search-and-rescue mission. The ship stayed put for two hours, according to Cruise Hive.

The passenger was brought back onboard in critical condition. He eventually died of his injuries.

It is unclear what caused the man to jump, although his identity is being kept secret for the privacy of the deceased individual and his family.

The “Icon of the Seas,” which is the world’s largest cruise ship, took its maiden voyage in January 2024.

passenger jumps off cruise ship on dare

Parents literally miss the boat: Teen's dream cruise turns into nightmare when he leaves entitled parents behind on Caribbean island

I n the last month or so, I’ve come across a couple of stories and videos about cruise passengers missing the ship's departure time. I’ve been meaning to write about it and now I have to, after reading this thread on Reddit.

A user who goes by @ProfessionalTax7753 on Reddit posted in the AITA community with the subject line: “AITA for abandoning my parents at an island in the Caribbean so I could get back to our cruise in time?”

As someone who is rarely late for anything and especially not for a cruise ship or flight, I had some strong opinions before even reading the post. In fact, my family and I are going on a cruise later this month and I followed my own advice and we are flying to our port city two days before embarkation, just in case there are any delays or problems along the way. Why? Cruises don’t wait for passengers.

Here’s his post: “I graduated from high school back in December. As a gift my parents got me a cruise. It was also for my 18th birthday. It was also a family vacation. We usually stay at all inclusive resorts but I have always wanted to go on a cruise.

I told my parents it was different and that if we went on excursions we had to follow the schedule no matter what.

Well it was a week-long cruise and they would not head back to the ship when I said it was time to go. They were busy shopping and bargaining with the locals. I finally said that I was heading back to the ship. My mom waved me off.

The missed the departure. By a lot. Like 45 minutes. They got ahold of me through WhatsApp. They wanted to know why I didn't get the boat to wait for them.

I wanted to scream that they were not going to inconvenience 3,998 people because two could not understand what a schedule was.

They ended up having to fly to the next port from there and it was expensive. They are pissed at me for leaving them behind.

I don't know what I was supposed to do. They literally told me that they knew what they were doing.

I wish I had never asked for this. They are making me miserable because I left without them.”

I really feel for this guy because he is obviously a responsible adult, unlike his entitled parents. And the internet agrees. Here are some of the top comments:

OwlPal9182: NTA they seriously think the ship will delay for 45 minutes, yea no. The docks and ship have a schedule to keep. They are adults and need to be responsible for getting back on time. Which is something you have figured out in less than 6 months of being an adult. At least you don’t have to go on any more vacations with them after this.

ParsimoniousSalad: NTA. Your parents are acting entitled. Tell them you saved them the expense of a third ticket to the next port.

FeRaL--KaTT: Google - cruise ship leaves passengers behind - then show them. Story after story of the same thing happening to others who didn't make it back before departure from Port. They are lucky they were able to fly to next port, many others have been stranded or worse.

Aggravating-Pain9249: Your parents are in the wrong. I don't do cruises but I have some experience with them because I travel to a place were cruise ships are common. I also thought passengers were warned that the ship leaves no matter who is on board. You would never have been able to prevent the cruise chip from leaving. They have a schedule and they keep to it. The ship waits for no one. This is ALL on your parents. They didn't respect the ship schedule. NTA

Last month, I read a great article on MSN titled: Why A Cruise Ship Can't Simply Turn Around And Let Late Guests Back On. It was written by an experienced cruiser and travel agent who highlights the many reasons cruises don’t wait for passengers. In short, the author writes, “there are two main reasons why cruise ships can't - or won't - simply turn around or wait for guests to reach the pier after the scheduled departure time. The first is that cruise ships are HUGE vessels displacing 100,000 gross tons or more and can't just turn around or hang out in the harbor waiting for guests. The second is that delays cost enormous amounts of money and cause a handful of late guests to inconvenience thousands of others who respected the ship's schedule.”

In his experience he writes, most passengers missed the ship because of “accidents and unforeseen events such as traffic delays or mechanical failures can create issues that are unavoidable, most of the time, the failure to return to the ship on time is due to guests not planning properly and situations involving alcohol-related carelessness.”

This is why it’s important to either book an excursion through the cruise line or leave plenty of time to make it back to the ship. If you book your tour through the cruise and there’s a flat tire or the bus breaks down, the ship will most likely wait for you or at least pay for your accommodations and transportation to the next port.

It’s also important to have a great travel insurance policy and always read the policy's fine print to know exactly what’s covered.

Back in 2010, my then girlfriend, now wife, and I almost missed our cruise ship in Estonia, while sailing the Baltic on a Seabourn cruise. It’s a long story but Natalie made a bonehead mistake and lost her passport. We thought it would be fine but, in short, it wasn't. The ship's Captain could not let her back on the ship without documentation. The next port was Poland and the ship would not be able to dock with an undocumented passenger. The crew and Captain were incredible through the whole ordeal and the Captain said the only thing he could do was delay departure by one hour as we scrambled to the Canadian embassy. It was truly a race against time and a miracle happened at the last minute. Here’s the whole story .

My advice is: Don’t be like ProfessionalTax7753's parents ... or these two pier runners in this video, which you can watch here .

Watch the video here .

A passenger fell off the world’s biggest cruise ship and died

On the first leg of a seven-night voyage from florida, a man fell from a deck of icon of the seas and was pronounced dead after a two-hour rescue mission.

A photo of the Icon of the Seas cruise ship.

A man died after falling from the deck on the world’s largest cruise ship , Icon of the Seas last week. The massive vessel had just started a seven-night cruise from Miami, Florida, when the man fell from one of its 20 decks , sparking a two-hour rescue mission.

The 1,200-foot long Icon of the Seas set sail from Florida on May 25 bound for its first stop at Honduras, reports the Royal Caribbean Blog . However, just a day after departing U.S. soil, the ship was forced into a dramatic rescue mission after an unnamed passenger fell from one of its decks.

The passenger reportedly plummeted into the Gulf of Mexico, sparking a two-hour rescue mission that involved crews from the ship as well as U.S. Coastguard officers. Rescue boats from the Royal Caribbean-operated cruise liner were quickly deployed to recover the man. As Royal Caribbean Blog reports:

The incident allegedly took place in the morning on Sunday, prompting an immediate rescue mission from the vessel. According to guests onboard Icon of the Seas, a small rescue boat was launched from Icon of the Seas to search for the overboard guest. Guests online stated that Icon of the Seas halted its course for approximately two hours to complete the search and rescue mission. Crew members took swift action while the ship maintained its location for the duration of the rescue mission.

However, while crews were able to recover the man after he fell from the ship and bring him back onboard alive, he reportedly succumbed to his injuries and died as a result of the fall. In a statement shared with Jalopnik, the U.S. Coastguard said:

The Coast Guard assisted in the search for a man who fell overboard the cruise ship Icon of the Seas. The cruise ship deployed one of their rescue boats, located the man and brought him back aboard. He was pronounced deceased. Beyond assisting in the search, the U.S. Coast Guard did not have much involvement in this incident.

Jalopnik has reached out to Royal Caribbean, which operates Icon of the Seas , for a statement about the death onboard its ship.

Royal Caribbean launched Icon of the Seas earlier this year, with the 7,600-passenger ship undertaking its maiden voyage in January. The ship, which is roughly 1,200 feet long and requires a crew of almost 3,000, features a water park onboard, an ice rink onboard and the largest swimming pool aboard any cruise ship.
