Indre-et-Loire : Paul Métadier, fondateur du musée Balzac de Saché, décède à l'âge de 102 ans

Paul Métadier est décédé ce jeudi 06 mai 2021, à Tours (Indre-et-Loire), à l'âge de 102 ans. Il avait créé, en 1951, le musée Balzac de Saché.

Bernard-Paul Métadier (de son nom complet) est décédé ce jeudi 06 mai 2021, à Tours (Indre-et-Loire) à l'âge de 102 ans. Selon sa fille Véronique, citée par nos collègues de la Nouvelle République ,  "Il s'est éteint dans son sommeil, à son domicile. Jusqu'à la fin, il a gardé toute sa tête" .

Pharmacien de profession, président des laboratoires Paul-Métadier, fondé par son père, il a aussi été membre de l'Académie de pharmacie et du Conseil de l'ordre des pharmaciens.

Dans les années 50, il s'aventure en politique. Conseiller général du canton Tours-Ouest, entre 1956 et 1961, il a été élu maire de Saché, situé à une trentaine de kilomètres au sud-ouest de Tours, entre 1971 et 1983. 

Passionné par Balzac

Paul Métadier était également un grand passionné d'Honoré de Balzac. Auteur de plusieurs livres sur l'écrivain, il crée en 1951 le musée Balzac au sein du château de Saché, propriété familiale depuis 1926. En 1958, il en fait don ainsi que des collections au Conseil départemental d'Indre-et-Loire. Il est nommé conservateur du musée, poste qu'il occupera jusqu'en 2001.

The history of the Museum

The museum's foundation

Château de Saché became a museum devoted to Honoré de Balzac in 1951. It was owned by Paul Métadier (1872-1956) at the time. He bought it in 1926 to join the woodland estate of his Château de Valesne residence. The château had been left deserted and Paul Métadier wanted to renovate the site where Honoré de Balzac stayed.

He had the château listed on the Monuments Historiques additional inventory on May 11th 1932. During the French Occupation (December 1942), he had the French administration list the site so it would be protected from the German troops' sporadic stays in the château. Paul Métadier dreamt of opening a writer's residence here in the 1930s. But his son, Bernard-Paul (born in 1918), had a real passion for Balzac and suggested opening a museum devoted to the illustrious author.

In 1943, Paul Métadier told a journalist that he agreed with the idea of a museum and summed up the concept: "I want to restore this old residence to its former glory by making it into a museum. Yes, there are other Balzac museums, but Saché has the unique appeal of a romantic setting that has been untouched for a century. The house's old stones still hold the literary giant's spirit so, in terms of material, it won't take much to revive the magical atmosphere that countless locals already know Saché for."

When it was founded, the museum only had a few rooms including the reception rooms and Balzac's bedroom. The Métadier family donated the château and the museum's first collections to Indre-et-Loire Council. Bernard-Paul Métadier was made the museum curator between 1958 and 2001. Major building work began in 1964 until the 1970s to safeguard the building, provide public access and adapt the site to a museum layout.

Au cœur de la Touraine se trouve le château de Saché, l’un des lieux d’inspiration privilégiés de l’écrivain tourangeaux Honoré de Balzac. Un cadre idéal dont il appréciait le calme pour écrire et se ressourcer. Comme on le comprend ! À peine franchi le portail d’entrée que je suis déjà séduite par ce manoir familier et cher à l’écrivain. Meublé et décoré à la manière d’une demeure bourgeoise de la première moitié du XIX e siècle, le château de Saché évoque également les intérieurs du château fictif de Clochegourde dans l’œuvre  Le Lys dans la Vallée .

Transformé en musée dédié à l’illustre écrivain en 1951, le château de Saché est un lieu surprenant. Cette visite fut un véritable coup de cœur que je partage avec vous avec beaucoup de plaisir.

# LE LOGIS RENAISSANCE

Le château de Saché est le témoin d’une longue histoire. Son architecture Renaissance porte les marques de son édification médiévale et de ses remaniements successifs. Le corps de bâtiment principal qui date du XVe siècle, a été agrandi d’une aile au XVIIe siècle puis d’une seconde au XVIIIe siècle. L’ensemble du bâtiment fut aménagé au XIXe siècle selon le style de l’époque par son propriétaire, Jean de Margonne. 

# LE DOMAINE DES MARGONNE

Jean Margonne et son épouse Anne Savary (sa cousine) ont, dès le début du XIXe siècle, l’habitude de venir à Saché en villégiature plusieurs mois de l’année. Le domaine appartient alors à leur grand-mère maternelle. Avant même de l’hériter en 1812, Jean Margonne ne cesse d’acquérir de nouveaux biens dans le village de Saché pour finalement posséder presque la moitié de la surface de la commune. 

# SACHÉ, UN LIEU D’INSPIRATION POUR BALZAC

Né à Tours en 1799, Honoré de Balzac quitte la Touraine pour Paris à l’âge de 14 ans. Il lui sera toujours fidèle en y revenant tout au long de sa vie. De 1825 à 1848, il rend régulièrement visite à Jean Margonne, propriétaire du château. Balzac trouve dans sa petite chambre qui lui est réservé le silence et l’austérité, loin des turbulences de la vie parisienne et des soucis financiers. Dès les années 1830, il souffre de problèmes pulmonaires et cardiaques. Son médecin lui ordonne alors régulièrement d’aller respirer l’air natal pour se remettre d’une activité parisienne trop intense.

Une dizaine d’œuvres sont en partie rédigées ou corrigées ici : Le Père Goriot , Louis Lambert , César Birotteau , Illusions perdues et bien d’autres. La vallée de l’Indre sert également son inspiration qui y situe son roman Le Lys dans la vallée . 

# LE MUSÉE BALZAC

Le château de Saché devient un musée consacré à Balzac à partir de 1951. Il est alors la propriété de Paul Métadier. À cette époque, le château est laissé à l’abandon. Paul Métadier a l’intention de le réhabiliter. En 1932, il obtient l’inscription du château à l’inventaire supplémentaire des Monuments historiques et pendant l’Occupation, en décembre 1942, il obtient de l’administration française que le site soit classé afin d’en assurer la protection face aux séjours sporadiques des troupes allemandes dans le château.

Dès les années 1930, il songe à créer un lieu de résidence d’écrivains. Mais son fils Bernard-Paul, ayant développé une véritable passion pour Balzac, suggère la création d’un musée consacré à l’écrivain.

Les vieilles pierres de cette maison sont encore si imprégnées par l’esprit du géant des lettres qu’il y a bien peu de choses à faire au point de vue matériel pour redonner à Saché cette atmosphère émouvante que connaissent déjà de nombreux tourangeaux. Paul Métadier 

Au moment de sa création, le musée ne compte que quelques salles dont les pièces de réception et la chambre de Balzac. En 1958, la famille Métadier fait don du château et des premières collections au Conseil départemental d’Indre-et-Loire. À partir de 1964, des travaux d’envergure sont menés pour sécuriser le bâtiment, rendre les lieux accessibles au public et les adapter à la création d’espaces muséographiques. Aujourd’hui, les collections du musée représentent environ 2300 pièces : sculptures, peintures, imprimés, manuscrits, estampes, dessins, photos, mobilier, matériel d’imprimerie.

# L’EXTÉRIEUR

Début de la visite de Saché avec un tour du parc de deux hectares. Il permet de contempler les paysages alentours, du village de Saché à la vallée de l’Indre. Cette exploration nous permet de mieux appréhender le château et son architecture. Le parc de Saché et la vallée de l’Indre inspirent grandement Balzac, notamment pour son œuvre Le Lys dans la vallée .

Je demeurai quelques jours dans une chambre dont les fenêtres donnent sur ce vallon tranquille et solitaire dont je vous ai parlé. C’est un vaste pli de terrain bordé par des chênes deux fois centenaires, et où par les grandes pluies coule un torrent. Balzac

# L’INTÉRIEUR

Le château de Saché est meublé et décoré à la manière d’une demeure bourgeoise de la première moitié du XIX e siècle. Plusieurs salles sont ouvertes à la visite et nous permettent d’avoir un aperçu de la demeure telle qu’a pu la connaître Balzac. 

À ne pas manquer :

• Le Grand salon : classé Monument historique en 1968, il a conservé son étonnant papier peint en trompe-l’œil malgré le pillage et les détériorations du château pendant l’Occupation allemande en 1942. Ce «  papier aux lions  » a été posé au château en 1803. Le mobilier, essentiellement d’époque Louis-Philippe, restitue l’ambiance qui régnait dans ce salon lorsque Balzac venait séjourner à Saché. La table de tric-trac et la table de jeu évoquent des activités spécifiquement masculines, tandis que la travailleuse, le métier à broder et le lit de repos donnent au salon son caractère féminin. 
• La salle à manger : le décor mural, classé Monument historique également, a été reconstitué en 1985 d’après les dominos de papier-peint retrouvés lors de travaux de rénovation. Les motifs pompéiens composés de colonnettes et de bas-relief en trompe-l’œil sont caractéristiques des décors néoclassiques à la mode dans le premier quart du XIXe siècle.
• La chambre de Bazac : quand Balzac séjourne à Saché, les Magonne lui réservent cette petite chambre que les curieux viennent déjà voir par curiosité dès les années 1830. L’écrivain apprécie notamment le calme du lieu et le fait que Jean Magonne le laisse libre d’écrire comme bon lui semble. Balzac trouve dans sa petite chambre qui lui est réservé le silence et l’austérité tel un monastère. Pendant ses journées de labeur, Balzac a l’habitude de se lever très tôt, vers 2 ou 3 heures du matin et de travailler jusqu’à 17h.
• Les salles de présentation de la vie et de l’œuvre de Balzac.

MA VISITE DU CHÂTEAU

Quelle belle découverte que le château de Saché. À l’écart des circuits touristiques, le château offre une véritable parenthèse hors du temps et nous plonge dans l’ambiance du XIX e siècle et de l’univers Balzac. La visite, en solitaire ou guidée, est ludique et captivante. Elle est ponctuée d’anecdotes. Dans chaque salle, des explications sur l’histoire des lieux, le mobilier, les modes de vie sont à notre disposition. 

À la fin du parcours de visite, prenez le temps de découvrir la salle abritant le matériel d’imprimerie ainsi que celle consacrée aux « représentations » de Balzac. Nous pouvons notamment y contempler des œuvres de Rodin.

Les enfants ne sont pas délaissés à Saché ! Des parcours ludiques dans le château et dans le parc sont proposés pour les familles avec «  Et si tu devenais un personnage de roman  » ou encore «  La vie des animaux selon Balzac « . 

Le château possède un beau parc de deux hectares, n’hésitez pas à vous y aventurer. Il permet de contempler les paysages alentours, du village de Saché à la vallée de l’Indre. Il y a même des transats, idéal pour se reposer au soleil.

Day 1 - Thessaloniki to Kavala

(Acts 16:9-11)"Come over into Macedonia and help us..." Apostle Paul was praying, asking for the direction of the holy spirit as to which city he should travel to. He arrived in Troas and there he had a dream, sent by the spirit of God. Therefore his trip to Europe began and the first country he visited was Greece. He arrived at Neapolis (Modern city of Kavala) which was situated in Philippi . Neapolis was the city port of Philippi which was named after Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great, and became a very important Roman colony. There, Ap. Paul established the very first Christian church in Europe. One of the highlights of the first day of the tour will be our visit to the river of Lydia , otherwise known as the "Jordan river of Greece". At this place, where Ap. Paul met Lydia and where his so-called prison is situated (Acts 16:40) , we will have the possibility of placing a prayer. We will also visit the "Agora" , the city square forum which was one of the most important places in the city, during Paul's time, and is mentioned in Acts. Return to Thessaloniki for overnight

Day 2 - Thessaloniki sightseeing, Thessaloniki to Pella, Pella to Vergina

(Acts 17:1)"Now, when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica..." One of the most spiritual churches of the New Testament was in Thessalonica. The tour will start with sightseeing of the city of Thessaloniki. Driving to the old city, we will be able to admire the Byzantine city walls , the white tower , the triumph arch of Galerius and the Rotunda . We will visit the Roman forum , the church of St.Demetrius , who is the patron saint of the city, and the Archaeological museum . After that, we will go to Pella , the new capital of the Macedonian kingdom and the birthplace of Phillip II and Alexander the Great. Our next stop will be at Vergina , the first Capital of the Macedonians, where we can see the amazing artworks of the tomb of Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great. Return to Thessaloniki for overnight

Day 3 - Thessaloniki to Dion, Dion to Kalambaka

(Acts 17:14-15)"And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea..." We will visit Dion , which was the sacred city of the ancient Macedonians. It was from the port of Dion that Ap. Paul possibly sailed to Athens. Dion is an extensive archaeological park. Its museum houses some of the rarest and most unique statues, reliefs and inscriptions. We will also see some of the most well preserved ancient roads and walls, two early Christian basilicas and finally a few Christian houses and shops of the time of Ap. Paul. Afterwards our trip will take us to Kalambaka , at the base of "Meteora", which has been characterized by Unesco as a "unique phenomenon of cultural heritage". These rocky formations are littered with Byzantine monasteries (14th - 16th century A.D.) Overnight stay in Kalambaka.

Day 4 - Meteora sightseeing, Kalambaka to Delphi

Our morning will begin with a brief sightseeing of Meteora and a visit to one of the oldest monasteries this beautiful place has to offer. In the afternoon, our trip will take us to Delphi , passing by Thermopylae which was famous for its 480 B.C. battle between the ancient Spartans and the Persians. Delphi is situated on the slopes of Mt. Parnassos and was considered the center of the ancient world (the omphalos of the earth). It was a sanctuary for all and a home to the oracle of god Apollo, Pythia, famous for her prophecies. (Acts 16:16)"...a certain damsel, possessed with a spirit of divination, met with us..." Overnight stay in Delphi

Day 5 - Delphi sightseeing, Delphi to Athens

In the morning we will commence our tour of Delphi, visiting the archaeological site of the temple of Apollo , its treasuries , the ancient theatre and the stadium , as well as its wonderful museum. There, among many wonders, we'll be able to admire the superb bronze charioteer and the Gallio inscription. In the afternoon we will depart for Athens. Overnight stay in Athens.

Day 6 - Athens sightseeing

(Acts 17:16-34)"Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry..." In the morning we will begin our sightseeing tour of Athens, which includes the house of parliament , the ancient olympic stadium (a.k.a. Kallimarmaron, Panathenaic Stadium), the temple of Zeus and the Hellenic Academy . We will then go to the Acropolis hill and visit the world famous Parthenon and the Erechtheion . We will continue to the nearby Ares Rock (Areopagus - Mars Hill) where Ap. Paul gave his well known sermon (Acts 17:16-34) . On this historic place, having a very good view of the modern city of Athens, we will have the possibility of prayer for Greece. Afterwards, we will go to the Athenian Agora which was the center of the ancient city where Ap. Paul met with the Epicurean and the Stoic philosophers. Our day's tour will end with a visit to the new Acropolis museum, one of the best worldwide. Free afternoon. Overnight stay in Athens.

Day 7 - Athens to Corinth

We will leave Athens for Corinth early in the morning  (Acts 18:1-8) . Once there, we will begin our tour with the "Canal" and explain, in detail, why Corinth was such a wealthy center in the days of Ap. Paul. We will then visit the archaeological site and walk through the Roman forum where the "Bema" , otherwise known as the judgement seat of Gallio, is situated. We will talk about head covering, women in the church, and "the fountain of living waters", presenting you with details and little known facts. Afterwards we will see the "Erastus" inscription and talk about its meaning, its background story and its role in the history of Ap. Paul in Corinth (Romans 16:23) . We will then visit "acro-Corinth" , where we will talk in depth about its history and its meaning for the ancient world. Moving on, we will go to Kechries (Cenchreae), the eastern port of ancient Corinth at the church of which Phoebe was the deaconess (Romans 16:1) . After that, we will visit the Isthmia area where we're going to find out why Ap. Paul was using athletic language in his letters to the Corinthians. Return to Athens. Overnight stay in Athens.

The Laboratoires Métadier were founded in 1905 in Tours by Paul and Paul-Bernard Métadier. It was well-known for its drug KALMINE.

Laboratoires Métadier became Métabio, then Métabio-Joullié in 1978 and finally were incorporated into Synthélabo in 1980.

This model of medal was created in 1971 and a specimen was given by Laboratoires Métadier to any new pharmacist setting up his own community pharmacy.

The portraits of St Côme and St Damien were inspired by two statues of Saint-Cosme-les-Tours priory, located nearby Tours, where the laboratories were founded.

The medal was manufactured by Arthus-Bertrand.

Self-sampling and Human Papillomavirus (HPV)-Testing for Unscreened Women in Cervical Cancer Prevention (APACHE-1)

Scientific Context

High-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV) are the causative agents for cervical cancer. Cervical cancer screening strategies rely on periodic Papanicolaou (Pap) testing. It's well-known that this test has significantly contributed to the reduction of mortality and morbidity due to cervical cancer. In France, it now seems that the screening strategy could be optimized. The two main ways are to reach the 7 million underscreened women (mass screening, self-sampling for HPV DNA testing) and to improve the screening test (HPV DNA testing, computer-assisted cytology). Self-collected vaginal samples (SCVS) for HPV DNA testing could be a relevant screening option: this technique appears reliable and it could allow to reach women who are never or seldom screened. Currently, there is no French data on the SCVS for HPV DNA testing.

The goal of this study is to determine the performance and acceptability of a population-based strategy using self-collected vaginal samples for HPV DNA testing to reach women who are not participating in cervical cancer screening.

Description of the project

This project (APACHE-1) is a part of a project called APACHE. APACHE-1 will be dedicated to the SCVS technical validation and to the comparison between different transports medium. Nine hundred women will be recruited from the 20 to 65 years consultants in the Tours University Hospital (CHRU of Tours) and in the IRSA (health centre for routine medical checkup).

Each woman will collect 2 SCVS with a nylon flocked swab (Copan® microRheologics™). The first SCVS will be put in a vial which contains a liquid medium. The second SCVS will be put in a dry vial. Then during the speculum examination the physician will collect a cervical sample with a Rovers® Cervex-Brush™ and then rinse it into a vial containing PréservCyt ™. A blind HPV DNA testing and genotyping (Inno-LIPA HPV Genotyping ™ Extra) will be performed in the virology laboratory of the CHRU of Tours on all samples (SCVSs and cervical samples performed by a physician). The performance of the SCVS to detect cervical HPV infection will be assessed (gold standard test = HPV DNA testing on cervical samples collected by the physician).

In a second time (APACHE-2), the researchers will investigate to what extent offering home obtained SCVS leads to participation of unscreened women. APACHE-2 will be registered on Clinicaltrials as another project.
