Photo Guide Service
Guiding serious photographers is one of our specialties. We have worked with many professional photographers and know the changing light of Monument Valley like no one else. A custom guided photographic tour with our photo guides is the best way to realize the full photographic potential of this spectacular and legendary landscape.
For sunrise photos of the Totem Pole, we leave the Visitor Center an hour before sunrise. After sunrise, we then move on to one of three sand dune locations, and depending on available time we might visit two arches. Of course, 4 hours is not enough to exhaust the photographic possibilities of Monument Valley, but this is our shortest tour.
For an all-day photo experience, Our photo guides will take you out 4 hours in the morning and again for 4 hours in the evening. This leaves time in the middle of the day for lunch, napping or sightseeing. For the morning and evening, sunrise-sunset tour, $250 per person.
Custom Group Tours
We enjoy creating custom tours for groups of all sizes. We have also organized very successful workshops for photo groups. Tour operators and organizers should contact us directly with your needs.
Things to Remember
- - We operate on daylight savings time. Utah time, not Arizona time.
- - We start all of our tours from the Visitor's Center in Monument Valley.
- - We have no set time for our tours. You get to set the time for your tour.
- - Highway 163 runs north and south through Monument Valley. 1/4 mile north of Arizona, Utah state line there is an intersection. Turn East. Go 4 miles and you are at the Visitor's Center. There is a $5.00 per person Entrance Fee. This is a Navajo Tribal park, not a National Park. In the parking lot there is an information booth. At the booth ask for Carlos Phillips, Carl Phillips or Ray Begay. We work together.
To Book Your Tour
The easiest way to book your tour of Monument Valley is to call us - at 928 429-0665 or 928 429-0040. We delight in tailoring your Monument Valley tour to your particular interests and needs. In a sense, every Phillips' Photography Tours is a custom tour.
If you would like to arrange a special photo tour, or multi-day tour, or a tour for a large group, it is always a good idea to contact us well in advance. Monument Valley is still a rugged, rural location, almost a wilderness, with only sketchy phone service, and reliable email. So please call us at.
The cellular phone service has good days and bad days, so you might have to call more than once. However, our voice mail system is very dependable, so you can leave a message and we will return your call as soon as possible. You can always write us (at the address below) or use our contact form and we will get back in touch with you.
Partners that we recommend!

Cicada map 2024: See where to find Brood XIX and XIII − and where they've already been spotted
For many Americans, the cicadas are here .
Trillions of periodical cicadas are already emerging in a rare, two brood event across multiple states , with more expected to come in the following weeks. Thanks to warm temperatures and good conditions, these 13- or 17-year cicadas are emerging from their underground habitats to eat, mate and die, making a whole lot of noise in the process.
Broods XIX and XIII have not emerged together since 1803, and after this year, won't emerge together again until 2245. While they are largely in different states, they are both emerging in parts of Illinois and Iowa.
So if you've seen one cicada or hundreds of cicadas, here's where you can expect to see more this year.
Are cicadas dangerous? Busting myths on the harmfulness of the noisy pests.
Are cicadas already out in 2024?
Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX have been spotted by users in multiple states across the Southeast and Midwest including in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and Illinois, according to Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Through Cicada Safari, users can confirm their sightings of cicadas with pictures, look at a map of other cicada sightings, join a leaderboard with other users and learn more information about cicadas.
2024 cicada map: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX are projected to emerge
The two cicada broods are projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in many states in May and lasting through late June.
The two broods last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.
What is a brood?
According to the University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."
A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These different species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.
Why do cicadas make so much noise?
You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call that they make before mating.
Unluckily for us, the 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas are the loudest , partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.

Testimonials from REAL people!
“J was a great guide! He was easy to get along with and knew so much about the area and where all the good places to go during different times of day, including when the weather wasn’t 100% ideal. He taught me a lot about how to frame pictures and different concepts to think about in photography. When I got back to my hotel and went through the pictures I took I was so impressed at how they came out and the fact that I actually took them.”
– Kathy Bischoff
“Me and my teenage daughter who is very much into photography took this tour so she can learn a bit more about it while we visit some beautiful places. J was an awesome guide he customized our trip to what we wanted to see, he knows a lot about the area. We saw 2 beautiful waterfalls and the most amazing sunset on top of Blue Ridge Parkway while my daughter learned a lot about photography techniques and her new camera.”
– Adrienn Horvath
“J was absolutely incredible to work with and learn from. He is very knowledgeable about the area and some of the best spots. His eye is like no other and he helps you align your eye to see nature in its best form so you can capture it for yourself! I would most definitely recommend this tour not only for beginners but experienced photographers as well!”
– McKenna Estes

Please check out this place. Thanks to this resident that the zoo and the bird refuge exists. https://www.bellosguardo.org
What a beautiful place. So much history there! Looking forward to being able to tour the second floor and carriage house.
I recently took a tour of Bellosguardo, and I have to say, it exceeded my expectations in every way. When I first saw the $100 price tag per person, I was a bit surprised. However, the intimate tour by a knowledgeable and friendly docent amongst the immaculately maintained grounds made it more than worthwhile. It's easy to think that because the property once belonged to a wealthy individual, it would be in top condition. However, it's evident that the foundation is struggling with limited resources to be able to maintain, let alone improve, this extraordinary estate. From basic amenities like toilets to an operational elevator, there's a lot of work to be done, and I finally understood why they need small groups instead of allowing this place to be open to the public like a public dog park, as some in the city are demanding. There's also an issue with parking on or near the property. They certainly have challenges ahead to be able to make this fully operational and available for mass public tours. In the meantime, taking an intimate, small tour was so special and charming. Despite their enormous lack of funding and operational challenges, the experience was unforgettable. Photography is restricted inside, but, trust me, the visuals will stay with you. It's totally my vibe in every way: excess opulence inspired by the Belle Epoch. The art collection is striking, and Huguette Clark was a very talented artist. I am so glad to have experienced the human side of her, which can be experienced through her art, and love for music. This isn't just a visit; it's like stepping back in time. Everything is original! I can't think of any other place quite like Bellosguardo. It's a beautiful and inspiring experience that justifies every dollar spent. If you're looking for a unique, intimate, and thought-provoking tour, don't miss this one. You won't regret the hefty entrance fee.
Our group of 10 tour was an absolute special event to kick off 2024. From the first moment we were met by name at the entry gate to the final good byes, we received a first class tour and many details about this incredible mansion right here in "our backyard" of Santa Barbara. We have toured the famed Hearst Castle many times over the years throughout the past 40+ years and Bellosguardo is equally as nice, if not better, due to the original condition of all interior furnishings and the ultra-pristine 24 acre grounds. Oh, and the sound of the waves from the nearby Pacific Ocean is an added bonus along with the views! Supporting the Bellosguardo Foundation is without question not only a must, but a very rewarding experience. We found out from our two extremely knowledgable docents that there is much more to come over the next couple of years. We are ready to return to Bellosguardo with friends and family when they come to visit us!
