Along the way you'll hear the story of these historic Italian cities, and once you arrive you'll have plenty of free time to see the best of each city independently and at your own pace.

Next, you'll travel to picturesque Lucca, known for its amphitheater main square, Guinigi Tower, and well-preserved medieval walls. After exploring the beautiful center and strolling around the walls, make sure you try out the delicious traditional buccellato cakes sold at bakeries throughout the city before returning to Florence.

Transportation Included from Florence

Beginning at a convenient location in central Florence, you'll hop on a modern, air-conditioned coach to Pisa. Drive through the rolling hills of Tuscany, seeing the stunning landscape as your driver takes you to Pisa and later, Lucca.

Avoid the hassle of the trains, tickets or a rental car. Sit back and relax on your wonderful day trip from Florence.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

When in Italy, snapping a photo holding up the tower is simply a must-do! On your first stop of the day, you'll experience the great Leaning Tower of Pisa and will have up to 3.5 hours of free time to explore this historic city.

Built in the 12th century celebrating victory after a conquest of Palermo, medieval Pisa was a powerful city-state. Unaware of the lack of stability on the marshy hill, the great tower took over 200 years to build but was not intended to be at an angle. Now reinforced to maintain at a stable tilt, the Leaning Tower has become one of Italy's most famous sites.

Had it stayed straight up, few would visit the impressive landmark today. Experience the Tower in person, taking in the grandeur and uniqueness of this accidental world icon.

Pisa Cathedral and the Piazza dei Miracoli

Built along with the Tower over 800 years ago, Pisa is centered around the Piazza dei Miracoli. Translated to the "field of miracles" in English, the grand square of Pisa is an impressive locale on its own. During your bus journey to Pisa, your trip leader will explain its rich history and its importance to the city, so you'll have a little context as you admire the beautifully constructed Renaissance-era architecture that surrounds the square.

Across the square from the Leaning Tower, visit the great Cattedrale di Pisa—one of Italy's most impressive churches. Alongside the cathedral, the stunning Baptistery and Monumental Cemetery are also sights to behold.

Lunch in Pisa

Although lunch isn't included in the tour price, Pisa is home to many wonderful local restaurants and it's a great chance to experience some authentic Tuscan cuisine (and maybe some wine too!). If you'd like some recommendations on where to eat, your trip leader will be happy to help.

Lucca—Tuscany's Most Beautiful Town?

From Pisa, you'll take a short ride through vineyards and riverbeds to Lucca. Protected by its well-preserved medieval walls, the colorful stucco and cobbled squares are unfiltered Tuscan magnificence.

You'll have up to 2.5 hours of free time to explore this enchanting little city. Head through the alleyways and piazzas of old town Lucca and head uphill for ultimate view above the city's ceramic rooftops. Though less visited than its leaning compatriot, Lucca's Guinigi Tower dominates the Lucchese skyline and is a great comparison to the tower in Pisa.

After strolling past the antique shops, ancient streets, and beautiful piazzas that make so many people fall in love with Lucca, we know what will make your trip to the city truly memorable. Before heading back to Florence, make sure you try the Luccan specialty, Buccellato. Sold in bakeries throughout the city, this delicious ring-shaped cake is perfect for your afternoon coffee, completing this wonderful Tuscan day trip.

Great experience

Our group of 14, including 5 children between the ages of 8 and 14, loved the tour. Alex and Ricardo did a great job and we were able to see and do most everything we wanted. Pisa and Lucca are beautiful!

A great trip

Our walking tour in Lucca would have been a little better if our guide could have spoken a little better English. She tried hard but took time to think of words needed and lost groups attention. Wonderful lady and she tried hard.

How to visit pisa and lucca in one day – day trip from florence.

pisa tour from lucca

This post contains some affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I receive a small commission at NO EXTRA COST TO YOU.

Pisa and Lucca are two of the best day trips from Florence. You can easily spend a full day in each city, but if you are short on time, you can combine both into one day trip. They are small, close to each other and well connected by trains, which makes visiting both in one day possible.

Aim for an early start and head to Pisa in the morning, then from there to Lucca in the afternoon. The goal is to be at the Leaning Tower of Pisa as early as you can, to beat the biggest crowds. By the time you leave Pisa, you’ll get a glimpse at just how crowded it gets and Lucca will be a nice break from it.

There are quite a few things to do in Lucca and you won’t be able to do and see it all in half a day. I chose several things, that I think are a great overview of what this city has to offer. So if taking a day trip from Florence to Pisa and Lucca sounds like something you’d like to do, here’s the step-by-step guide.

Table of Contents

Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy

Pisa and Lucca

Pisa – this small city in the Tuscan region needs no introduction. It’s home to one of the biggest tourist attractions in Italy, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Even though the tower is the reason everyone visits Pisa, there are several other beautiful monuments within Piazza dei Miracoli.

Lucca – a charming small town in Tuscany, that is often overlooked in favor of more popular Siena and San Gimignano. Lucca is known for the beautifully preserved Renaissance Walls, that encircle the entire Old Town. In Lucca you will find picturesque alleys, towers, many churches and beautiful squares. And just a fraction of visitors compared to Pisa and Florence.

Getting to Pisa and Lucca from Florence

Both Pisa and Lucca are well connected by trains with Florence, which makes this day trip an easy one. The trains are cheap, very frequent and train stations are within a short walk to anything you want to see.

If you are doing a road trip through Tuscany and have a rental car, you can also drive to both cities. This will give you more flexibility, but you’ll need to deal with parking. Keep in mind, that cars are not allowed with the Old Town in Lucca, so you’d need to park outside of the city walls.

I think day trip from Florence to Pisa and Lucca is best done by train, and I wrote this guide with that in mind.

  • Pisa and Lucca day trip from Florence

Take a train from Florence to Pisa

Trains from Florence to Pisa depart from Santa Maria Novella station and arrive at Pisa Centrale. It’s a one-hour ride and trains run frequently. My suggestion is to leave around 7 am, which will get you to Pisa by 8 am. It’s a 20–25 minute walk from Pisa Centrale station to the Leaning Tower. You can always hop in a taxi too.

You can check the train schedule on Trenitalia , I recommend downloading the app on your phone as well. Tickets can be bought online, but it’s not necessary. When searching, be sure to put in Firenze for Florence.

Take photos outside of the Leaning Tower of Pisa

Once you arrive in Pisa, head straight towards the Leaning Tower, which is about a 25 minute walk. If you want to get photos with not too many people in them, this is the time to do it. You probably won’t be the only person there, but hopefully you’ll be there before the first tour groups arrive.

The photos below were taken between 7.30-8 am. Shortly after, first big groups started arriving and by 9 am it was already pretty crowded. By 10 am, completely packed with people.

pisa tour from lucca

Climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa

After you got your pictures and photographed the tower from every angle, it’s time to climb to the top. I’ve read more than once, that it’s not worth it, but I strongly disagree. The views are great and it’s a fun experience. Yes, it’s kind of pricey, but I still think it’s one of the must things to do in Pisa.

First of all, you need to book your tickets online , especially if you are visiting in high season. The tower opens at 9 am and you want to book the very first time slot. They let a new group of people every 15 minutes, so it’s best to go up as the first group.

Besides the great views from the top, climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a fun and unique experience. There are 294 steps on one side and 296 on the other, and you definitely feel the tilt as you go up. Kids under 8 years old are not allowed to climb the tower, so keep that in mind if you are visiting Pisa with kids.

Purses and backpacks are not allowed, and you can use of the free lockers to store whatever you have with you. They are located in the Cloak Room, which is right behind the Fallen Angel statue.

Explore the rest of Duomo Complex

While the Leaning Tower of Pisa is what most people come to see, there are several other amazing buildings within Piazza del Duomo, where the tower is located. Right next to it, there’s Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most beautiful Cathedrals in Italy.

The stunning Baptistery of San Giovanni is the largest one in Italy and that’s where Galileo Galilei was baptized.

Another impressive place worth visiting is Camposanto Monumentale. The big building with a courtyard in the middle is basically a massive cemetery, where a lot of important people are buried. You can take a walk around and admire many beautiful tombs and frescoes.

The entire Duomo complex is recognized as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Individual tickets for each monument are € 7 (except for the Cathedral, that is free), but if you want to see it all, get a combined ticket for € 27. This gives you access to all the monuments and the Tower.

pisa tour from lucca

Take a train from Pisa to Lucca

After lunch, it’s time to catch the train from Pisa to Lucca. You don’t need to walk back to Pisa Centrale, as there’s another train station, that is much closer. Rossore is located about a 5-minute walk from the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the regional train from Pisa to Lucca passes through it anyway.

It’s a short 20 minute train ride and one way ticket costs about € 4. This is a regional train, there’s no need to purchase your ticket in advance. Just come to the station a few minutes earlier and buy it at the automated machine. Do not forget to validate your ticket!

Once you arrive in Lucca, it’s a short walk from the train station to the city center. It shouldn’t take you more than 5 minutes to reach Porta San Pietro, which is one of the six entry gates to the city.

pisa tour from lucca

It’s easy to explore Lucca on your own, but if you’d like a visit all the main spots with a guide, this is a great 2- hour walking tour of Lucca.

See Lucca’s Cathedral

If you love churches, Lucca is for you. It’s known as a “City of a Hundred Churches” and there sure plenty of them. One not to be missed is Cathedral of Lucca, also known as Cattedrale di San Martino. The church dates back to the 11th century and combines two styles: Gothic and Romanesque.

The Cathedral is located in Piazza San Martino, not far from the train station, so it’s a good first stop after you arrive in Lucca.

If you’d like to see the Cathedral only, the entrance fee is € 3. You can also get a combined ticket for € 10, which gives you access to the Cathedral, the bell tower, the Church of Saints Giovanni and the museum.

the cathedral in Lucca, Italy

Stop at Piazza San Michele

Piazza San Michele is one of the squares in Lucca and a must visit on your day trip. That’s where you will find one of the most beautiful churches, San Michele in Foro. The church dominates the square and impresses with its stunning exterior. San Michele in Foro is dedicated to St Micheal the Archangel, and if you look up, you will see his statue up on the top along with a couple of smaller angels.

The inside of the church is beautiful as well, and you can visit it for free. Just remember about the dress code. To step into churches in Italy, you must cover your shoulders and knees.

You will find many cafes and restaurants around the Piazza, so it’s a good place to stop for a drink and people watch. It’s a hopping place and often, there are various events happening in the square.

pisa tour from lucca

Climb to the top of Guinigi Tower

There are several towers in Lucca you can climb, but one that sure stands out is Torre Guinigi. Built in the 14th century for a wealthy family, it’s one of the few remaining towers in town.

Torre Guinigi is 45 meters (125 feet) high and there are 233 steps to get to the top. Once you make it, you are rewarded not only with spectacular views, but also a rooftop garden. Several holm oak trees were planted on the top terrace, which makes Torre Guinigi the most unique of all towers in Lucca.

The trees are sure an interesting addition and if you’d like to see it from the distance, you can also head over to Torre delle Ore, which is just a short walk away. The views will be similar, but you can photograph Torre Guinigi with its oak trees from there. If you’d like to climb both, you can get a combo ticket for both at either tower.

Entrance fee: € 6 / opens every day at 10 am, but closing time varies depending on the season

view from the top of Guinigi Tower in Lucca, Italy

Visit Piazza dell’Anfiteatro

You’ll find many squares in Lucca, but Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is the most unique one. It got its name from the Roman Amphitheater, that once stood there. Hence the oval shape of the square.

Like other piazzas, it has many cafes and restaurants.

pisa tour from lucca

Pizza da Felice

Just a short walk from Piazza dell’ Anfiteatro is Pizza da Felice, the oldest pizzeria in Lucca. It’s a small, family run place, that has been opened since 1910. It’s a great place to grab a slice of pizza to go. There are some stools and high top table outside, but not much seating besides that.

Prosciutto pizza I had was excellent, hands down the best pizza I’ve had in Italy so far. One of their specialties is chickpea pizza. If you are not in the mood for pizza, they also have focaccia.

The place is tiny and gets busy, but the service is quick.

Pizza da Felice is open 12-2.30 pm and 4-8.30 pm ( 9 pm on Saturdays ). It’s closed on Sundays.

pisa tour from lucca

Bike the city walls

One of the biggest Lucca attractions are the perfectly preserved Renaissance walls, that go around the entire city. Built to defend Lucca, the walls are still in tact and today it’s a great place to walk and bike. There is wide, tree-lined promenade with plenty of shade to enjoy a leisurely walk or bike ride with great views along the way.

The entire loop is 4 km (2.5 miles) and if you wanted to walk it, it takes about one hour. But I recommend renting a bike instead. Biking is one of the top things to do in Lucca, and there are plenty of bike rentals around. You can rent a bike by the hour (about € 5/hour) and that is long enough to go around the walls and do some biking around the city. Most places will ask you leave your ID until you return your bike, so don’t forget to bring it.

pisa tour from lucca

Take a train from Lucca to Florence

When you are ready to leave, walk back to the train station to head back to Florence. You’ll be going from Lucca to Santa Maria Novella station in Firenze. There are direct regional trains, that take 1 hour and 20 minutes and one way ticket costs € 8.40. Trains from Lucca to Florence run until about 10 pm.

Again, there’s no need to pre-book your tickets, just allow extra time to purchase it at the station. As always, do not forget to validate your ticket! There are machines right on the platforms at the Lucca train station.

Best Pisa and Lucca tours

Visiting Pisa and Lucca on your own is very easy. But if you don’t want to deal with all the logistics, you can always take an organized tour. Both Pisa and Lucca are very popular day trips from Florence, so there are many tours you can take, that combine both cities.

Are you ready to take an unforgettable journey through an engaging Lucca and Pisa tour? Lucca and Pisa are undoubtedly among the richest cities in the world for their architecture and history : they are unmissable destinations for those who want to go deep inside Tuscany and its artistic background.

pisa tour from lucca

Lucca is also famous for its still-intact walls with huge gates and ramparts that still encircle most of the historic old town. Lucca is a perfect small town to just explore on foot . You can start walking or biking around on the old city walls, 4 kilometres of panoramic walkway overlooking this medieval city.

The city centre contains an exceptionally large number of churches. If you can only see one, head to the Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Martin and a wonderful example of the Romanesque architectural style .

This church is set not far from Il Fillungo – the most famous street in Lucca – from which you can basically access everything in town. Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is one of the coolest places in Tuscany , an oval shaped piazza that you enter through portals.

This Square is exactly as the name describes and was once a Roman Amphitheatre – the elliptical shape is still evident. The buildings surrounding the square have been created in the same elliptical shape and are all different heights and colours – the effect is quite astounding and the shades of yellow, cream and white create an inviting open space.

A curiosity: Lucca is also home to several annual events that attract fans and people from around the world. Lucca Summer Festival enlivens various locations with concerts by famous singers, while Lucca Comics & Games is the most important fair dedicated to comics in Italy.

It usually takes place at the end of October ; loads of fans of anime and cartoons arrive in town dressed in fantastic costumes.

A trip to Lucca would not be complete without a Pisa tour – these two cities are only 17km apart and have great transport links.

You can reach Pisa in less than 30 minutes using the regular train or bus service, or even by simply driving there. Pisa is a legendary city and one of the most famous in Tuscany : it has a plethora of beautiful structures and its location on the River Arno means that it has some fantastic photographic opportunities too.

During your Pisa tour, the main attraction is undoubtedly the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Piazza dei Miracoli – this complex contains the leaning tower, the magnificent cathedral, the unfinished baptistery and the monumental cemetery.

This main tourist area can be covered on foot in just a few hours . More than a great spot for a funny image of you holding it up, the Leaning Tower actually dates to 1173 and has an interesting history.

pisa tour from lucca

It took two centuries to build it, yet its signature tilt began almost right away, caused by the soft ground on which it is built, composed of sand, clay and deposits from the rivers Arno and Serchio.

Unsurprisingly, it is just one of the several leaning towers in the city – we challenge you to find them all! Furthermore, you can climb to the top of the tower for a surreal tilted view of the surrounding city .(You can go up only if you have made online reservations. Cost: 18€)

Most tourists don’t go much “beyond the tower”, but the rest of the city has a few monuments to explore should you choose to spend the whole day there.

Pisa is home to three important universities, the Scuola Normale and Sant’Anna, as well as Università di Pisa – so expect to see lots of young people and find cheap lunch options!

If you love unusual plants, during your Pisa tour, set aside time for the Orto Botanico or Botanical gardens run by the University of Pisa.

Founded in 1543, it is the oldest university botanical research centre in the world! If you are looking for a combination of fantastic architecture and high end retail shopping, the Borgo Stretto is the place to visit! This delightful street is located in the heart of the city and starts at the Piazza Garibaldi next to the Ponte di Mezzo.

On this street you can find a range of designer stores, boutique shops and quaint cafes. For those who love a little retail therapy there is no better place in Pisa to visit!

  • During your Pisa tour, walk along the Arno River and take some unique images that look like paintings!

B est time to visit Tuscany

The best times to visit Tusca ny are between September and November and between March and May . During these months, you will find comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds at the major sights.

Note that Tuscany is likely to be very busy around the Easter holidays , a popular time for Italians to travel to Tuscany.

A visit in early fall brings you an opportunity to partake in the region’s many grapes and olive harvest festivals. Summer ushers in high temperatures and heavy crowds. If you want Tuscany all for yourself, visit during the winter low season, but expect the cold and sometimes rainy.

Lucca and Pisa Full Day Tour

This tour will be a surprise for most of you! The first stop is  Lucca , a Roman town enclosed by its original massive red brick walls which were built between the 16th & 17th century.

The walls are one of the beautiful distinguishing characteristics of Lucca

This fortified enclosure makes this town totally unique because you can easily walk and cycle over it.

If you like to bike we can easily rent them and discover the city biking.

The tour proceeds with a walk or bike along via Finlungo, the main axis of the historic core, which is lined with ancient houses and towers and stops at the Roman Amphitheatre square.

Then explore the house of Puccini (one of Italy’s great opera composers), the church of San Michele and the Duomo of San Martino with its rich decoration, both typical example of Pisano Romanesque style.

With a short transfer through the mountains that separate Lucca from Pisa, the tour will give you a panoramic view of the leaning white tower.

Pisa, undeniably has one Of the most photographed monuments In Tuscany

The slant, just under 4°, gives the bellower its the name: the Leaning Tower of Pisa. But did you know there is so much more to see in Pisa?

Before we spend time exploring the Piazza dei Miracoli with the tower, baptistery, cathedral, “campo santo” and museums we will explore the inner city, the Arno River and the famous persons who once resided here, like Galileo.

⇒  Tickets to climb the Tower of Pisa  will need to be purchased in advance (you can do that at this website   www.opapisa.it )  Please advise if you want to climb the almost 300 steps to the top, so we can make appropriate time allocations during the tour. The booking for these tickets is possible 45 days in advance,  the earlier the better – they run fill-up quickly . Be sure to bring photo ID if you have a ticket to climb the tower of Pisa.

pisa tour from lucca

The enchanting walls of  Lucca , as the city grew and modernized, surrounded the old town and were maintained which was not the case for many other cities in Tuscany, including Florence. As the walls lost their military importance, the top of the walls became a pedestrian promenade, today one of Lucca’s main attractions.

Commonly referred to as the “city of one hundred churches” due to a large number of religious buildings which represent marvelous examples of architectural Italian styles.

Pisa , once served as one of the main Italian maritime republics, until the sand and sediment from the Arno river moved the shoreline towards what is now Livorno and your port of call.

From mysterious beginnings, this city is now famous worldwide for its leaning bell tower, Pisa also boasts a beautiful cathedral, one of the earliest known universities (from the 1200’s), over 20 churches and home to many special talents like that of Andrea Bocelli.

pisa tour from lucca

Tour Description

Florence has no shortage of cultural treasures. But so many travelers know about them that the Renaissance city can get very crowded. That’s why we’ve designed this day-trip : so you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city to explore two of Tuscany’s less-visited wonders.

Your private Pisa and Lucca tour transports you through the Tuscan countryside to visit Florence’s great historical rival: Pisa. You’ll visit the vertically challenged Leaning Tower of Pisa where – subject to advanced reservation and availability – you’ll climb its dizzying heights. After wandering the Piazza of Miracles , we’ll make our way to the enchanting walled town of Lucca where you’ll be treated to an authentic taste of Tuscan life.

Visit the vertically challenged Leaning Tower of Pisa

All travelers in Tuscany aspire to make a stop at the Leaning Tower of Pisa . Yet few people ever get to go inside and climb it. This is what we can organise for you with advanced reservation and subject to the availability of priority tickets (which we’ll communicate to you long before your tour).

It’s no wonder this 14th century tower attracts so much attention. With its winding stairwell of nearly 300 steps, and disorientating lean of five degrees, this architectural freak of nature has simultaneously intrigued and baffled visitors for centuries. The Leaning Tower is quite safe, for now! Just don’t rule out an impromptu reenactment of Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” while you’re up there.

Explore the aptly named Piazza of Miracles

As you might expect from one of the Mediterranean’s most powerful medieval city-states, Pisa boasts a remarkable architectural legacy. Its 12th century Duomo easily rivals those of Florence  and Siena equivalents. Towering over the piazza are four colonnaded levels of white stone and dark-grey marble, while inside the Duomo’s richly ornate interior are such resplendent artworks as an apse mosaic by Cimabue .

Another unmissable attraction on the Piazza of Miracles is the Pisa Baptistery of Saint John . Completed in 1363, this part-Romanesque, part-Gothic marble structure is a true visual feast. As the largest baptistery in Italy , its interior architecture is overwhelming. Though stripped of ornamentation, it boasts an incredible colonnaded dome and 13th century pulpit.

Journey across Tuscany and wander the Lucca City Walls

The walled medieval town of Lucca is as enchanting as it is unpresumptuous, still largely undiscovered by Tuscany’s hundreds of thousands of visitors. If you’re looking for an authentic taste of Tuscan life  in a traditional countryside city, Lucca is the perfect destination.

Lucca has no shortage of things do see. But as with all Italian cities, it’s well worth whiling away a few hours exploring its quirky medieval streets and alleyways at your leisure, popping into its shops, bars, and artisan gelaterias as and when the moment takes you. One unmissable experience is seeing Lucca from above which you can do by walking or cycling its  Renaissance walls  which still completely encircle the city.

Marvel at the Romanesque Church of San Michele in Foro

Lucca  is home to the wealth of churches you’d expect from any Italian city. But by far the most beautiful is the Church of San Michele in Foro . Standing on the site of Lucca’s Roman Forum , San Michele is a stunning example of Tuscan Romanesque architecture. Its 11th century facade is impossibly ornate: exhibiting perhaps the finest example of its kind anywhere in Italy .

Explore the Piazza of the Amphitheater

Roman history runs deep in the stunning city of Lucca. It was here, in fact, that Julius Caesar , Pompey Magnus, and Crassus formed the famous First Triumvirate in 56 BC. Like Rome, Lucca boasts many Roman sites underlying the medieval street plan. And the most intriguing of all without doubt is the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro ( Amphitheater Piazza ).

As is apparent from the shape, the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro stands above Lucca’s ancient Roman amphitheater. Like Piazza Navona in Rome , the modern square derives its shape entirely from the structure that underlies it. It was a big beast, once able to accommodate some 10,000 spectators. Envisage the gladiatorial spectacles that would have once taken place here as you explore this charming piazza. Then wander onto one of its nearby streets to indulge in a well deserved gelato or aperitivo .

Pisa tour

Tour Description

Our Lucca and Pisa Tour is a discovery of two gems in Tuscany.

There’s more to Tuscany than Chianti and Florence. This gorgeous Italian region has so much to offer.

Lucca and Pisa are among the most beautiful towns you can visit in Italy.

1. Lucca: gorgeous sights, history, and food

We have designed this tour so that you can explore Lucca and Pisa in total comfort. Your driver will pick you up at your hotel and drive you through the legendary countryside of Tuscany.

After about one hour, you will reach Lucca, where you will meet your local guide and start your private city tour.

Your Lucca and Pisa Tour will also be a food experience! While touring Lucca you’ll taste one of the most famous local products: the “focaccia Lucchese”.

You’ll also have the chance to try some artisanal Lucchese chocolate and a local pastry – all included in the price!

- Piazza Napoleone & Palazzo Ducale

After an introduction to the city’s history, you’ll head towards Piazza Napoleone.

The square was commissioned by Elisa Bonaparte, the sister of Napoleon.

This beautiful piazza is overlooked by the grand Palazzo Ducale, the seat of political power since the Middle Ages.

- The Cathedral of San Martino

Next, you’ll walk through Piazza del Giglio and reach the Cathedral of St. Martin, one of the highlights of our Lucca and Pisa Tour.

Inside the cathedral, you’ll admire the impressive decoration. Your guide will show you the most important artworks in this medieval treasure, and share the story of its construction and decoration.

Then, you’ll take a walk along via Fillungo, Lucca’s main street, which has some of the city’s oldest and most traditional stores.

- Piazza Anfiteatro

The next stop will be Piazza Anfiteatro , built on top of the ancient Roman amphitheater, whose shape was preserved in the construction of the piazza.

Locals and travelers sit outside cafes, enjoying the Tuscan sun right where, 2,000 years ago, the gladiators used to fight.

Piazza Anfiteatro is a truly unique mix of past and present.

- Walk on the Walls!

Lucca is also famous for its walls, built between 1504 and 1645, and perfectly preserved.

Your Lucca and Pisa Tour will continue with a walk on top of the walls, where you can enjoy a special view of the city from a unique vantage point.

Your Lucca walk will end in Piazza San Michele, which was built on top of the ancient Roman Forum of the city. Here, you’ll admire the impressive Church of St. Michael and the house of the legendary opera composer Giacomo Puccini.

At this point in the day, you’ll probably be ready for lunch.

Your guide will happily recommend a lovely restaurant, where you can try some of the delicious local food and wine (not included in the price).

About the tour.

Pisa & Lucca day trip from Florence

The tour will begin with your private driver collecting you from your hotel in Florence (another custom location in the area can be agreed) with a luxury sedan or minivan, and after 1.5H drive you will reach  Pisa . Once a maritime power to rival Genoa and Venice, modern Pisa is best known for an architectural project gone wrong. But the world-famous Leaning Tower is just one of many noteworthy sights in this compelling city.

You’ll have the chance to visit the centre of the town with a portfolio of well-maintained Romanesque buildings, Gothic churches and Renaissance squares. A charm you will definitely discover starting from Piazza dei Miracoli with The Leaning Tower and the magnificent Cathedral. If you wish to climb on top of the Leaning Tower, we can make for you the necessary advanced reservation (this is optional and not included). In Pisa there will be time to have lunch in a typical restaurant, enjoying Tuscany food.

The tour will then continue with 45min driving to the lovely Lucca. Hidden behind imposing Renaissance walls, its cobbled streets, handsome piazzas and shady promenades make it a perfect destination to explore by foot: Piazza Anfiteatro, a round square built on the site of an ancient Roman amphitheater; the Duomo of Saint Martin, the fascinating cathedral; the Torre Guinigi, a Medieval tower topped by the oaks of its hanging garden.

At the end of the day, the tour will conclude and your private driver will take you back to your hotel in Florence or other desired location.

Optional for this tour, we can provide an official local guide that will lead you during the day trip to Pisa & Lucca.

Pisa is at once the best known and the most mysterious of tuscan cities..

Its most celebrated monument (THE LEANING TOWER) has become, along with the COLOSSEUM, gondolas and spaghetti a symbol for the entire ITALIAN REPUBBLIC. Pisa's origins are unknown. The city lies at the junction of two rivers, Arno and Auser (now disappeared) in the Ligurian Sea forming a laguna area. The Pelasgi, the Greeks, the Etruscans and the Ligurians have variously been proposed as founders of the city. Archeological remains from the 5th century BC confirm the existence of a city at the sea, trading with Greeks and Gauls. The presence of an Etruscan necropolis was discovered during excavations in the Arena Garibaldi in 1991. From the 11th to the 13th century, PISA's powerful navy ensured the city's dominance in the western Mediterranean. Trading links with SPAIN and NORTH AFRICA led to a scientific and cultural revolution reflected in the splendid buildings at the era:

DUOMO, BAPTISTRY and THE CAMPANILE (BELL TOWER).

Pisa's decline was assured when the ARNO began to silt up. Salt marsh, partly a nature reserve now divides the city from the sea. The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italian: Torre pendente di Pisa) or simply The Tower of Pisa (La Torre di Pisa) is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa. It is situated behind the Cathedral and it is the third structure by time in Pisa's Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square). Although intended to stand vertically, the tower began leaning to the southeast soon after the onset of construction in 1173 due to a poorly laid foundation and loose substrate that has allowed the foundation to shift direction. building: the 13th century square tower at Suurhusen and the nearby 14th century bell tower in the town of Bad Frankenhausen (Sunday Telegraph no 2,406- 22nd July The height of the tower is 55.86 m (183.27 ft) from the ground on the lowest side and 56.70 m (186.02 ft) on the highest side. The width of the walls at the base is 4.09 m (13.42 ft) and at the top 2.48 m (8.14 ft). Its weight is estimated at 14,500 tonnes. The tower has 296 or 294 steps ;the seventh floor has two less steps on the north-facing staircase. The tower leans at an angle of 3.97 degrees. This means that the top of the tower is 3.9 meters from where it would stand if the tower were perfectly vertical.

In PISA our drivers can drive you in the FIELD OF MIRACLES where you can visit THE DUOMO, THE BAPTISTRY, THE LEANING TOWER, CAMPOSANTO. You can visit also PIAZZA DEI CAVALIERI with its beautiful buildings.

Lucca was founded by the Etruscans (there are traces of a pre-existing Ligurian settlement) and became a Roman colony in 180 BC. The rectangular grid of its historical center preserves the Roman street plan, and the Piazza San Michele occupies the site of the ancient forum. Traces of the amphitheatre can still be seen in the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. Frediano, an Irish monk, was bishop of Lucca in the early 5th century.[1] At one point, Lucca was plundered by Odoacer, the first Germanic King of Italy. Lucca was an important city and fortress even in the 6th century, when Narses besieged it for several months in 553. Under the Lombards, it was the seat of a duke who minted his own coins. The Holy Face of Lucca (or Volto Santo), a major relic supposedly carved by Nicodemus, arrived in 742. It became prosperous through the silk trade that began in the 11th century, and came to rival the silks of Byzantium. During the 10-11th centuries Lucca was the capital of the feudal margravate of Tuscany, more or less independent but owing nominal allegiance to the Holy Roman Emperor. After the death of Matilda of Tuscany, the city began to constitute itself an independent commune, with a charter in 1160. For almost 500 years, Lucca remained an independent republic. There were many minor provinces in the region between southern Liguria and northern Tuscany dominated by the Malaspina; Tuscany in this time was a part of feudal Europe. Dante's Divine Comedy includes many references to the great feudal families who had huge jurisdictions with administrative and judicial rights. Dante spent some of his exile in Lucca. In 1273 and again in 1277 Lucca was ruled by a Guelph capitano del popolo (captain of the people) named Luchetto Gattilusio. In 1314, internal discord allowed Uguccione della Faggiuola of Pisa to make himself lord of Lucca. The Lucchesi expelled him two years later, and handed over the city to another condottiere Castruccio Castracani, under whose rule it became a leading state in central Italy. Lucca rivalled Florence until Castracani's death in 1328. On 22 and 23 September 1325, in the battle of Altopascio, Castracani defeated Florence's Guelphs. For this he was nominated by Louis IV the Bavarian to become duke of Lucca. Castracani's tomb is in the church of San Francesco. His biography is Machiavelli's third famous book on political rule. In 1408, Lucca hosted the convocation intended to end the schism in the papacy. Occupied by the troops of Louis of Bavaria, the city was sold to a rich Genoese, Gherardino Spinola, then seized by John, king of Bohemia. Pawned to the Rossi of Parma, by them it was ceded to Martino della Scala of Verona, sold to the Florentines, surrendered to the Pisans, and then nominally liberated by the emperor Charles IV and governed by his vicar. Lucca managed, at first as a democracy, and after 1628 as an oligarchy, to maintain its independence alongside of Venice and Genoa, and painted the word Libertas on its banner until the French Revolution in 1789.
