However, the experience you have in Bali will differ depending on what time of year you visit. If you’re looking to steer clear of the hustle and bustle that the high season brings, visiting Bali in September is a great time to travel.

Bali in September: Why It’s a Good Time to Visit!

In my opinion, September in Bali is one of the best months to visit! The weather is good, the island is quieter and you’ll find more budget-friendly options for your trip. I personally think that by visiting in September you’ll get the most out of your visit to Bali .

Bali Weather in September

The month of September brings some pretty awesome weather to Bali. The average high temperatures hover somewhere between 29 – 32 degrees and the lowest temperatures are between 22 – 25 degrees.

Bali has two seasons, the wet season and the dry season, and September marks the tail end of the dry season. This means that most days are still characterised by clear skies, plenty of sunshine, and lower humidity levels.

While September is generally a dry month, it’s not uncommon to experience short-lived rain showers as the island begins to transition towards the wet season. These showers are usually brief and tend to pass quickly. I think they also bring a refreshing coolness to the warm tropical air!

Fewer Crowds

As we know, Bali has been a popular destination for travellers from across the globe meaning that the island can feel very overcrowded during the high season! This is especially true for places like Uluwatu, Ubud and Canggu .

Traffic can become a nightmare and travelling around by taxi, ride-sharing apps or car can take much longer than usual.

One of the biggest advantages of travelling to Bali in September is the smaller number of tourists. As the peak season comes to a close, the island takes on a more chilled-out vibe, which will allow you to fully enjoy its beauty without feeling too overwhelmed.

With fewer crowds, you’ll be able to explore Bali’s popular temples, beaches, and rice terraces without the stress of the busier months.

Is Bali cheaper in September?

So you’re probably wondering is Bali cheap to visit in September?

You’ll certainly find more budget-friendly options when visiting at this time of the year and there are a few great ways to keep the costs of your trip down.

Cheaper accommodation

Cheaper accommodation is another great reason it’s worth travelling to Bali in September!

As the tourist numbers decrease during the shoulder season, you’ll find a wider range of affordable options for hotels, Airbnb, and resorts.

Some accommodations will offer special deals and discounted rates in the quieter months, meaning you don’t have to break the bank to stay in a great location!

Whether you’re looking for a luxurious beachfront resort, a bamboo house in the jungle or a cosy guest house tucked away in a mountain village , September is the perfect time to get great value for money and make the most of your travel budget.

Cheaper flights

For the same reason that accommodation can be cheaper in September, you’ll most likely find that flights to Bali will be more affordable also.

To ensure you get the best flight deal, I recommend searching the prices on flight comparison sites and being flexible with your travel dates if possible!

The Best Places to Visit in Bali in September

Your Instagram feed and socials are probably full of stunning photos of the many picturesque locations in Bali.

Each part of the island brings its own special charm, and although these locations are unreal all year round, I think they are some of the best places to visit in Bali in September.

  • Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a rugged island located southeast of Bali and is one of the quieter locations you’ll find.

Known for its pristine beaches, dramatic cliffs, and crystal clear waters, Nusa Penida offers breathtaking views and a serene break from mainland Bali.

There are plenty of iconic places you can visit such as Diamond Beach , Angel’s Billabong and Kelingking Beach.

Another great thing about Nusa Penida is it’s one of Bali’s most untouched destinations. If an authentic island vibe is what you’re after, then you’ll certainly find that here. It’s a great place to visit if you want to get off the beaten path and enjoy some peace and quiet.

You can also visit Nusa Penida’s smaller neighbouring islands, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan. Although these are not as untouched as Nusa Penida, they are still great places to visit for a day or two!

Where To Stay In Nusa Penida

Mambo Hill Resort is tucked away in the hills of Nusa Penida. This property offers intricately designed rooms with amazing views over the ocean and Mount Agung.

Autentik Penida Glamping is just a stone’s throw from Crystal Bay Beach, this adults-only accommodation has you completely immersed in nature. Each glamping tent offers stunning views over the surrounding jungle.

A bird eye view over Kelingking Beach. The white rock formation that reaches out towards the turquoise ocean is covered in green moss. White waves spread across the white sand beach in the cove.

I hadn’t visited Lovina until my most recent trip to Bali and honestly, I could kick myself for not going there sooner!

Lovina is located on the northern coast of Bali and is about a three-hour trip from the airport. Don’t be put off by the drive time, I personally think the longer journey is well worth it! Known for its black sand beaches, calm waters, and resident dolphins, Lovina is a great destination to visit during the month of September.

You’ll find that Lovina offers a completely different atmosphere in comparison to the towns located in the south of Bali, and is reminiscent of the island’s earlier days before the tourist boom.

Where To Stay In Lovina

Lovinalife is in a great location, just a 600m walk to Lovina Beach and just under 1km to Ganesha Beach. They have a coffee shop onsite where they serve one of the best coffees in Bali!

Ju’Blu Hotel is a little oasis tucked away near Lovina town and has a great garden and pool area to relax in.

Grab Your Free 7-Day Bali Itinerary!

Uluwatu is nestled on the southern coast of Bali and is an absolute gem to explore especially during September. It’s jaw-dropping cliffside views overlook the Indian Ocean and make for the perfect scenic getaway.

You may have already heard but Uluwatu is also known for being home to some of the best beaches in Bali. Although it is a popular destination, I think it still holds more of an authentic charm compared to the other popular towns.

The beaches here are stunning but if you decide to go for a swim, be aware that this area is a bit more rocky! Watch your feet when entering the water and tread carefully!

Perched dramatically on the cliffs of Uluwatu, is the iconic Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) which is an awesome place to visit. I recommend going for sunset so that you can catch nightly Kecak dance performances and fire shows.

Just a small word of warning though. While you’re here, watch out for the resident monkeys, they’ll most likely try to pinch your sunglasses!

Where To Stay In Uluwatu

Gravity Eco Boutique has beautifully decorated thatched roof bungalows and is the perfect place to relax during your September Bali trip. This adult-only boho hotel has multiple pools and offers stunning views over the Indian Ocean.

The Room Padang-Padang is just across the road from Padang-Padang Beach and is a great place to base yourself for some surfing. Here you’ll find lots of restaurants and shops are just a short walk away meaning you don’t need to venture far for anything!

Tegalalang Rice Terraces

Tegalalang Rice Terraces near Ubud is a popular destination for visitors to Bali all year round, and in the peak months, a visit can be a bit more stress than it’s worth if I’m honest! BUT during September the island is much quieter meaning that usually busy attractions are much more enjoyable to visit!

I’d definitely take advantage of this and make the trip during this time.

The terraces are meticulously carved into the hillside, and each layer of this iconic site showcases the beauty of Bali’s traditional rice farming culture.

It’s easy to spend a few hours exploring here! The cascading emerald green terraces are not only stunning to see but are also an important part of Bali’s agricultural heritage.

If you’re happy to travel further afield from Ubud then Sidemen also has stunning rice terraces.

Where To Stay Near Tegalalang Rice Terraces

Angsoka Bungalow is located in Ubud and is a 20-minute drive from Tegalalang Rice Terraces. Nestled between lush tropical forests, this peaceful location is just outside of town and is above the Petanu River.

Sunrise Villa is a bit of luxury and is a great place to stay if you are travelling in a group. This 3-bedroom villa has an infinity pool overlooking the jungle, a hot tub and is just 7km from the rice terraces.

Rice terraces that have been carved in to the hill side. Each step of the terraces have shallow water and small rice plants growing. The rice terrace is surrounded by lush green palm trees. This is quieter in Bali's shoulder season.

Best Things To Do In Bali in September

I probably sound like a broken record by now, but because Bali is quieter during September it’s the perfect time to enjoy some of the many fun activities the island has on offer!

Hike Mount Batur for Sunrise

If you’re a bit of an adventure seeker and love being outdoors, then hiking Mount Batur for sunrise is a really unique way to start your day in Bali!

While it does mean you’ll have a rough wake-up call at around 2 a.m., trust me when I say that the breathtaking views make it all worthwhile. The sky in September is usually pretty clear so you should get amazing views across Lake Batur and the rest of the island when the sun begins to rise. You’ll even be able to see Mount Agung from here.

You will either need a guide or book a tour to climb the slopes of Mount Batur as it is an active volcano.

Snorkelling

This is probably no surprise but the underwater world of Bali is rich in marine life. It’s a great place to see vibrant coral reefs, turtles and all types of colourful fish. And guess what? September is one of the best times to go snorkelling!

During this time of year, the visibility is good, the water is usually calm, it’s not as busy and the average water temperature is 27 degrees (perfect for a swim!).

Unfortunately, there aren’t many places in the south that are good to snorkel due to strong currents and the coral reefs being too far out from the shore. However, below are some of the best places to snorkel (in my opinion!)

Nusa Penida is a snorkelling experience with a bit of an awesome twist! Not only will you see vibrant coral reefs and colourful fish, but you also have the possibility of swimming with manta rays!

These beautiful creatures can be found off the shores of Nusa Penida all year round, but as September has clear visibility and fewer tours going out, it is one of the better times to see them.

The black sandy beaches of Amed are renowned as some of the best snorkelling locations in Bali due to the thriving coral reefs and diverse marine life found here.

Snorkelers visiting Amed can explore vibrant underwater ecosystems with an array of sea creatures including turtles and rays! There is also a small shipwreck and an underwater post box that you can explore.

Virgin Beach

Even though Virgin Beach has grown in popularity over the last few years, it is still relatively quiet and is tucked away between lush green hills.

The calm shallow waters here are perfect for snorkelling, and you’ll discover healthy coral reefs just a few meters from the beach. This makes Virgin Beach the perfect spot for snorkelers to explore and get lost in Bali’s underwater world.

Surfers love visiting Bali in September! It’s the perfect time to catch some waves as the swell is pretty consistent at this time of year.

As September falls into the dry season, the best surf spots for this time of year are on the west coast of Bali which turns into a surfer’s paradise!

Here are some of the top spots to catch some waves;

  • Uluwatu – Nestled on the southern coast, Uluwatu is renowned for its stunning cliffside views and offers world-class waves. Best for more advanced surfers!
  • Bingin – Just a stone’s throw away from Uluwatu, Bingin is a hidden gem with a vibrant surf culture.
  • Echo Beach – Located in Canggu, Echo Beach is a popular spot for both surfers and beach lovers.
  • Berawa – Also situated in Canggu, Berawa offers a mix of beach breaks and reef breaks.
  • Dreamland – Dreamland provides surfers with dreamy, sandy beach breaks and waves that are ideal for all skill levels.

You can find surf schools dotted all along Bali’s west coast, so whether you’re a seasoned surfer or looking to learn how to ride the waves, there is something for everyone.

As with snorkelling, September is a great time to go diving in Bali. This is due to good visibility and warmer water temperatures.

You should get clear views of the bustling marine life and thriving coral reefs that hide beneath the surface. Some of the best dive spots in Bali are;

  • Nusa Lembongan

September is also the height of Mola Mola season (also known as Ocean Sunfish), these giants are one of the heaviest bony fish in the world! Despite their size, they are reported to be docile and curious of divers and would be pretty awesome to see!

A girl standing on some rocky stairs that have been carved in to the edge of a cliff. Behind her is a white sandy beach and the turquoise ocean.

Final Thoughts – Bali in September: Weather, Things To Do & See

So I think it’s pretty obvious by now that I think that visiting Bali in September is a great time to explore the island!

With its favourable weather, quieter atmosphere, and tons of activities to enjoy, September offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re into water sports, relaxing by your own private pool or simply soaking in the stunning landscapes, there’s plenty to enjoy this time of the year!

Weather in Bali

Picture5 2 Bali in September 2024: My Top Travel Tips for an Amazing Trip

Bali’s weather is usually warm and sunny, making it a great place to enjoy the outdoors. The island has two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, which lasts from April to September, is the best time to visit if you prefer less rain and more sunshine.

During these months, you can expect clear blue skies and pleasant temperatures , perfect for exploring the beaches and participating in outdoor activities like swimming, surfing, and hiking.

The wet season , from October to March, rains more often, and the weather can be a bit unpredictable.

While you might experience some heavy showers, the island remains lush and green during this time. It’s still possible to enjoy Bali in the wet season . Still, it’s good to be prepared for occasional rain and plan indoor activities like visiting museums and galleries or trying out local cuisine in cozy restaurants.

Bali’s location near the equator means it has a tropical climate with high season humidity throughout the year. Staying hydrated and wearing light, breathable clothing is essential to remain comfortable in the warm weather.

Even during the wet season, the temperatures remain relatively high, so you can still enjoy the island’s beauty and vibrant culture. With its tropical climate, Bali offers a welcoming environment for travelers seeking a relaxing and enjoyable vacation, no matter the season.

And how is the weather in Bali in September ?

Picture6 2 Bali in September 2024: My Top Travel Tips for an Amazing Trip

September marks the beginning of the rainy season in Bali, a time of the year when the island experiences more rainy days compared to the drier months. Despite the increased precipitation, September is still considered one of the best months to visit Bali, as it’s a good time to explore the island’s best places such as Nusa Dua, Nusa Penida , and the stunning rice paddies. The rainy season also means fewer people and lower hotel prices, making it an ideal time for travelers seeking to avoid the peak tourist season.

During September, you can expect clear skies and plenty of sunshine, with average daylight hours and warm temperatures. While there may be some rain, the island typically sees less rainfall compared to the previous months, and the water temperature remains inviting for activities like scuba diving in crystal clear waters, where you might spot manta rays. With fewer tourists, you can also enjoy attractions like the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park and the beautiful Echo Beach without the crowds .

Although September is technically part of the off-season, the weather conditions still make it a good time to visit, especially for those looking to experience Bali with a little bit of rain and a lot of sun. Keep in mind that the average maximum temperature hovers around a comfortable range, and the UV index remains moderate. Just be prepared for the possibility of extra cost for certain activities and be sure to check the trade winds and the dew point to make the most of your trip to this Indonesian island.

Visiting Bali in September

If the weather is still sunny and dry in September, the number of tourists drops considerably. In fact, many hotels and resorts lower their rates because it’s off season. Consequently, for value, September could be the best month of the year to visit Bali.

Events in Bali in September

Not many events are scheduled in Bali in September this year, with one major exception: the Bali Carnival. Here’s a short list of the what’s lined up:

Makepung Bullock Races – Ongoing

makpung-buffalo-races

Nine Makepung Bullock Races are held in six different competitions every other Sunday from July to November .  The Regent Cup is held in August . And the Governor Cup is held in November . Moreover. traditional arts are on display. Talk about a feast for the eyes!

Makepung Buffalo Races – Jemberana Regency, Bali.

Bali Kite Festival – Ongoing

The Bali Kite Festival is an annual event. And it takes place during the windiest months of the year. But the dates vary because they depend on weather conditions. Basically, it gets underway when the winds start to blow. And it ends when the winds die down.

Usually, the festival kicks off in July and concludes in October. But July and August are when it is at its peak. Because that is also one of Bali’s peak tourist seasons. And most of the action is at the beach.

Bali Kite Festival – Padanggalak (north of Sanur), Bali.

Galungan and Kuningan – 23 September to 5 October 2024

Galungan celebrates the creation of the universe. In addition, it commemorates the victory of good over evil. Moreover, Galungan marks the beginning of the new year according to the Pawukon Calendar . Finally, the festival lasts 10 days, culminating with Kuningan on the final day.

penjor-lining-road-in-bali

Because the Balinese traditionally used two calendars, you should not confuse Galungan with Nyepi, a.k.a. Silent Day (the Balinese New Year ).

While Galungan marks the beginning of the new year according to the Pawukon calendar, Nyepi marks the beginning of the new year according to the Saka Calendar .

The festivities always begin on a Wednesday. And they continue for 10 days. Furthermore, they take place in family compounds. And in Bali, family compounds double as temp[es.

According to tradition, gods come down to earth during this period. In addition, the souls of ancestors pay visits to their families.

If the festivities begin on a Wednesday, the preparations begin two days earlier. On Monday, cakes are prepared. And they will be used as offerings on the following Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the men slaughter pigs to make pork kebabs and blood sausage. Furthermore, men also make “ penjor “. To clarify, penjor are beautifully decorated bamboo trunks. And they are mounted on the sides of the roads and in front of houses.

The festivities end 10 days later with Kuningan. This is a celebration of purification. Traditionally, the Balinese believed that their ancestors souls left their family compounds on this day.

Because the Pawukon calendar has only 210 days, Galungan will take place again in 210 days, with Kuningan following in 10 days.

Daytime temperatures usually range between 23° and 28° Celsius , while evenings can be cooler, particularly in the northern regions.

  • Events and Festivals: September is packed with traditional festivals and seasonal events. The Kishiwada Danjiri Festival in Osaka is a must-see, known for its thrilling danjiri (large wooden floats) races. Another highlight is the Ohara Hadaka ‘Naked Man’ Festival , a boisterous celebration in Chiba where loincloth-clad men carry mikoshi shrines into the sea to pray for a good autumn harvest.
  • Popular travel destinations such as Kyoto and Tokyo can still see significant foot traffic, especially during the Silver Week holiday in mid-September. It’s advisable to book accommodation early.

After wandering through the grove, cross the Togetsukyo Bridge, where the Katsura River flows serenely beneath.

Kyoto is the birthplace of kaiseki , a traditional multi-course meal that is as much about aesthetics as it is about taste. September’s kaiseki menus reflect the changing seasons, with dishes featuring seasonal ingredients like matsutake mushrooms, sweet potatoes and chestnuts. As the evenings begin to cool in September, there’s no better comfort food than yudofu , a simple yet flavorful tofu hot pot. Made with Kyoto’s famously soft tofu, the dish is served with a variety of dipping sauces and seasonal vegetables.

Kyoto Tips & Recommendations

Kyoto is a city best explored on foot, with its narrow streets, hidden alleys and numerous temples and gardens. Wear comfortable shoes to make the most of your day, especially if you plan to visit multiple sites. For a truly immersive experience, consider staying in a traditional ryokan. These Japanese inns offer tatami mat rooms, futon beds and often include kaiseki meals. Staying in a ryokan also allows you to enjoy the seasonal changes up close, as many ryokans feature beautiful gardens that reflect the natural beauty of Kyoto.

Nikko is rich in history and full of stunning nature, making it a popular place to-visit in September.

Toshogu shrine Nikko

Nikko Toshogu Shrine

The crown jewel of Nikko, Toshogu Shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dazzles with its elaborate carvings, gold leaf decorations and intricate woodwork. Dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the shrine is surrounded by ancient cedar trees. Be sure to visit the famous Nemuri Neko ( Sleeping cat carving ) and the Five-Story Pagoda , both of which are iconic symbols of Toshogu’s artistic and spiritual significance.

Irohazaka Winding Road

The Irohazaka Winding Road is an exhilarating drive that offers some of the most breathtaking views in Nikko. Comprising 48 hairpin turns that ascend the mountains, this road connects the lower town of Nikko with the Okunikko region. In September, as you navigate the twists and turns, you’ll be treated to panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains, which begin to light up with the first touches of autumn foliage. The journey culminates at the Akechidaira Ropeway Observation Deck , where you can take in sweeping views of the Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji.

Tochigi Prefecture is known for its high-quality sake, thanks to the pure mountain water and cool climate. In Nikko, you can visit local breweries to sample a variety of sake, from light and crisp varieties to richer, more full-bodied brews. Many breweries offer tours where you can learn about the traditional sake-making process and the importance of local ingredients. After a day of exploring, there’s nothing more relaxing than soaking in one of Nikko’s many hot spring baths. The mineral-rich waters are said to have healing properties, and the outdoor baths offer stunning views of the surrounding nature. Yunishigawa Onsen , in particular, is a charming hot spring village where you can enjoy a quiet and rejuvenating experience surrounded by mountains.

Nikko Tips & Recommendations

To enjoy the tranquility of Nikko’s most famous sites, such as Toshogu Shrine and Kegon Falls, it’s best to visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive.

Travel Tips and Recommendations

Transportation.

Despite the increase in price, the Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is still a good option for tourists planning to travel long distances, offering unlimited rides on JR trains, including the Shinkansen. It’s particularly cost-effective for trips between major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. For island destinations like Okinawa, domestic flights are quickest, with budget carriers like Peach Aviation offering frequent connections. Ferries are an option for a scenic route to Okinawa and smaller islands. For city travel, IC cards (Suica, Pasmo) streamline transit on trains, buses and even at convenience stores.

Accommodation Recommendations

Book early, especially during Silver Week. Traditional ryokan offer an authentic experience with tatami rooms and hot spring baths, while minshuku (family-run inns) and temple lodgings provide a cultural stay. In cities, modern hotels and guesthouses cater to all budgets.

Packing Tips

Pack light layers for fluctuating temperatures and bring a rain jacket or umbrella for unexpected showers since typhoon season is in September. Comfortable, easy-to-remove shoes are ideal for visiting temples.

Budget Planning

Use regional rail passes for specific areas to save money on transportation. Look for discount tickets and combination passes for museums and attractions. Keep some cash on hand for rural areas and small purchases.
