15 Best Things to Do in Lowestoft (Suffolk, England)

At the Suffolk-Norfolk border, Lowestoft is a seaside resort and port town with an interesting story to tell.

In the 20th century the port was one of the pillars of the UK’s fishing industry, while the town developed with the expansion of offshore oil and gas drilling in the North Sea in the 1970s.

On Lowestoft’s South Pier, the Mincarlo museum ship testifies to both the town’s fishing activity and its oil and gas exploitation.

On sunny summer days Lowestoft’s wide sandy beaches, promenade, Victorian terraces and seafront gardens are all the more appealing, while inland, the town is right on the Broads National Park.

Oulton Broad, within the park, is a sweeping lake edged by a town park and leisure amenities.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Lowestoft :

1. The Broads

The Broads

Lowestoft is at the southern end of the Broads, a big network of rivers and lakes protected as a National Park and Ramsar Wetland.

Like most of the Broads, Oulton Broad in Lowestoft is a flooded depression most likely caused by peat cutting in Medieval times.

The lake is fringed by a lovely municipal park, cafes and a farm park/petting zoo for children.

Watersports fans come from far and wide for sailing and powerboating in the lake.

You can watch powerboat races on Thursday evenings from April to September on the grassy banks.

The Lowestoft Ferry also runs between Oulton Broad and Lowestoft’s South Pier, departing every hour and a pleasant way to travel between the two tourist spots.

2. Lowestoft Beach

Lowestoft Beach

South of Lowestoft’s harbour there’s a long, flat sandy beach, traced by a promenade, gardens, bowling greens and some handsome Victorian houses.

Packed with sun-seeking families in July and August, the beach is split into two by the Claremont Pier.

The pier dates to 1903 and extends for more than 200 metres into the North Sea.

This structure is awaiting redevelopment but at its entrance on the promenade are a couple of restaurants in historic pavilions.

South of the pier the promenade starts to climb the cliff away from the shore, and below there’s a long line of cute beach chalets.

3. The Scores

The Scores

In Lowestoft’s harbour ward, the Scores are steep lanes descending to the sea between the High Street and Whapload Road.

In the past, Beach Village sat at the bottom of the cliff, and these passages were worn from the soft rock by people making their way up and down the slope over hundreds of years.

There are 14 in all, while 12 are visible today, and as you explore them you can wonder about some of the characters that have trodden these paths, like fishermen and smugglers.

You can download a map of the Scores, and a signposted Scores trail has been set up.

In September the Waveney Athletics Club stages the gruelling Scores Race along these stairways and slopes.

4. Lowestoft Maritime Museum

Lowestoft Maritime Museum

In a rather small space, this award-winning museum is busting with interesting objects covering different aspects of seafaring in Lowestoft.

There are medals awarded to Royal Navy and RNLI personnel, tools from Lowestoft’s shipyards, fishing paraphernalia, pieces of marine art and a host of ship models.

Especially exciting is the recreated workshop of the hovercraft inventor Christopher Cockerell, including his left-handed lathe, donated to the museum after he passed away in 1999. You can also go into depth on local figures like Robert William Hook, a Victorian-era RNLI coxswain, who saved more than 600 lives in his career, and Thomas Crisp, a Lowestoft local awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for gallantry in the First World War.

5. Africa Alive

Africa Alive

This highly-rated wildlife park close in Kessingland is dedicated to animals from the African continent.

Africa Alive has more than 1,000 animals in 60 acres of parkland, keeping many of its inhabitants like ankole cattle, lechwes (antelopes), Somali wild asses and Barbary sheep in vast paddocks.

The Plains of Africa enclosure has children’s favourites like giraffes, rhinos and zebras, while there are also special habitats for lions, cheetahs and African primates.

Two must-dos are the Lookout Lodge, which has a perfect bird’s eye view of the lion enclosure, and Lemur Encounters, where you’ll walk through an enclosure with lemurs overhead.

There’s also a timetable of feeding talks and a daily bird of prey demonstration.

6. East Anglia Transport Museum

East Anglia Transport Museum

A repository for public transport from the first decades of the 20th century, the East Anglia Transport Museum is the only transport museum in the country where you can take rides on trams, buses and trolleybuses in one place.

These vehicles trundle through period street scenes and out into woodland, while there are dozens more static transport artefacts to be found in the exhibition halls.

These have been rescued from councils around the country and even abroad.

There are trams from Blackpool, Glasgow and here in Lowestoft, and Trolleybuses from London, Derby, Belfast and Copenhagen.

Also on display are lorries, vintage cars, taxis and vans with historic livery.

The museum has a tearoom and is open on afternoons in spring and summer, with two “special event” days each month.

7. Pleasurewood Hills

Pleasurewood Hills

Lowestoft has its own theme park in 50 acres of parkland on the northern edge of town.

Kids under 13 will get the most out of Pleasurewood Hills’ rollercoasters, water rides, bumper cars, carousels and miniature railways.

There are more than 35 rides, shows and attractions in all, more than enough fun for a whole day.

For some adrenaline try “Wipeout”, which is a boomerang rollercoaster, reaching speeds of up to 50 mph, going through three inversions, and then repeating the course backwards.

Little ones can hit the Heart Kids’ Zone, with lighter rides like a mini pirate ship, an indoor play area and flying elephants.

8. Nicholas Everitt Park

Nicholas Everitt Park

On Oulton Broad, Nicholas Everitt Park is a restful open space on what used to be a private estate.

In the late Victorian period the land was owned by one Nicholas Everitt and after he died in 1908, his friend, the philanthropist Howard Hollingsworth bought the estate and donated it to the town.

Everitt’s home, Broad House, contains the Lowestoft Museum, while there’s loads to keep kids entertained in summer, like a boating lake, trampolines and crazy golf.

There’s a big open lawn for picnics next to the Broad, while the bandstand has weekly concerts on Sundays in summer.

  • 9. Mincarlo

Mincarlo

Berthed at the South Pier is an intriguing relic of Lowestoft’s shipbuilding and fishing industries.

Mincarlo is the last surviving sindwinder trawler of Lowestoft’s fishing fleet, and was laid down at the town’s Brook Marine yards in 1960. For the 60s and most of the 1970s Mincarlo caught plaice, haddock, cod, sole and skate in the North Sea, before serving as a rescue ship for the platforms in the southern North Sea gas fields.

The Mincarlo is now a museum ship, and you can come aboard for a tour to see the engine room, bridge and quarters, scaling ladders as you go.

The tour is given by knowledgeable volunteers, who have engrossing firsthand insights about life aboard trawlers.

10. Lowestoft Museum

Lowestoft Museum

Set in the Grade II-listed Broad House in Nicholas Everitt Park, the Lowestoft Museum documents Lowestoft’s heritage.

That house, with decorative merlons and Gothic Revival arches, dates back to 1685. The museum has an important collection of Lowestoft porcelain, produced in the 18th century, as well exhibits relating to local personalities like the famous composer Benjamin Britten.

You dip into Lowestoft’s past as a fishing port, and see curiosities from the ships HMS Mantis and HMS Lowestoft.

Also exciting is the archaeology collection, which along with Roman and Anglo-Saxon objects includes 700,000-year-old flint tools discovered in the Lowestoft in Pakefield, the earliest evidence of human habitation in the UK.

11. St Margaret’s Church

St Margaret's Church

Wherever you are in Lowestoft you should be able to see the illuminated spire of this Grade I-listed church.

For hundreds of years the church tower was used as a waymark for vessels navigating the Suffolk coast.

St Margaret’s is built from flint and dates mainly from the 15th century although it was restored in the Victorian period.

Keep your eyes peeled for the octagonal baptismal font, dating from the 1400s, while the unusual brass lectern goes back to the 16th century and is pre-Reformation.

Also interesting is the wooden panel listing every parish priest at the church since 1308. On the north wall of the nave there’s a moving memorial to all of the Lowestoft fishermen who lost their lives at sea between 1896 and 1923.

12. Kirkley

Kirkley

Lowestoft’s southern suburbs used to be independent villages before they were taken over by the town’s sprawl.

Kirkley is on the coast and mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086. This area is noted for the imposing terrace of Victorian townhouses along Marine Parade, commissioned by the construction entrepreneur Sir Samuel Morton Peto, who managed the firms that built monuments like Nelson’s Column and the new Houses of Parliament.

Further south you’ll come to a traditional Victorian seafront park at Kensington Gardens, overlooking the beach and with a bowling green, tennis courts and tearooms.

13. Somerleyton Hall

Somerleyton Hall

Staying on the Peto theme, the businessman bought this Jacobean country house in 1843 and completely transformed the building and its gardens.

He hired the architect John Thomas, who worked on Buckingham Palace, and gave this house an Italianate Baroque Revival design.

In the walled garden are stunning iron and glass greenhouses designed by Joseph Paxton, the man responsible for the Crystal Palace.

Also outside you can try to solve one of the country’s best yew mazes, planted in 1846. The house is still a private home, but you can take a tour to see the parlour, ballroom, library, grand staircase hall and winter garden.

The interior still follows a 17th-century plan and with oak panelling, family portraits, tapestries, stunning carved bookshelves and an opulent silver dining service.

14. Gunton Warren and Corton Woods

Gunton Warren and Corton Woods

Lowestoft is bounded to the north by more than 30 hectares of protected nature.

On the coast, Gunton Warren mixes dunes, cliffs, shingle and lowland.

In summer the scrubby woodland in this reserve offers shelter to migrating bird species like the yellow-browned warbler and icterine, which are rarely spotted in the UK. Inland are the Corton Woods where mature beeches and oaks provide a habitat for woodland birds, and where you may see a variety of wild orchids.

Right next door is the Dip Farm Pitch & Putt if you’re up for some casual golf.

15. Ness Point

Ness Point

Just along from the outer harbour, this rather unassuming protrusion into the North Sea is the most easterly point of England, the British Isles and the UK. Right next door is Orbis Energy, a renewable energy development centre.

The gigantic wind turbine standing here is the tallest in the UK. Named Gulliver, it produced energy from 2005 to 2011. Ness Point is paved with a “Euroscope”, pointing out the direction and distance of cities around Europe and the UK, as well as the sunrise during astronomical events like the solstices and equinox.

Lowestoft guide

Be the first to see the sunrise in the UK

Sitting proudly in the northernmost part of The Suffolk Coast is Lowestoft. Famous for being the most easterly town and the first place to see the sunrise in the UK, it's also the birthplace of composer Benjamin Britten.

With its alluring sandy beach and the beautiful Broads, Lowestoft is a place that connects with and celebrates the sea.

The town is a favourite with families, and there's plenty to see and do; with two piers, a wildlife park, an award-winning theme park, museums and a busy theatre which is home to the Royal Philhamonic Orchestra.

Did you know?

Lowestoft is home to Ness Point, the UK’s most easterly point and is one of the leading areas in the UK for renewable energy. Historically, Lowestoft was a thriving port at the centre of the fishing industry with 400 million herring landed every season at the height of the industry.

Fishing gave way to oil and gas exploration and as this has faded in importance, renewable wind energy has taken its place. And whilst the port is important so are other businesses such as CEFAS, which is a world leader in marine science and technology, and Birds Eye who produced the first fish finger in Lowestoft!

Lowestoft is also the birthplace of English composer, conductor and pianist Benjamin Britten, and you can still see, and even stay in the house on Kirkley Cliff Road where he was born and spent his childhood.

Every year in September, hoards of runners assemble in the historic high street for the annual Scores Race. The 4.75 mile race runs up and down the historic scores, with a total of 401 steps and passageways!

Ernie's Adventures

Sniffing out the best dog-friendly pubs, cottages, hotels and products in the uk, ruff guide to… great yarmouth, gorleston and lowestoft.

The seaside resort of Great Yarmouth is renowned for its rollercoasters and amusement arcades and there are plenty of attractions to keep dogs and their owners busy, too. The 10-mile stretch of coastline between Yarmouth and Lowestoft – Britain’s most easterly town – is packed with things to see and do, from beautiful beaches to Banksy artwork and the famous Broads National Park. There are also some fantastic dog-friendly places to eat and drink. Read on to see our recommendations….

The Venetian Waterways in Great Yarmouth

Dog-friendly Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Lowestoft: the must-sees

Start with a trip to the Venetian Waterways , which will show you Yarmouth’s more genteel side. The winding network of canals, just north of the ‘Golden Mile’, hark back to a golden era and are lovely to walk around. Once upon a time, gondaliers used to transport people around the waterways as classical music played. And today, you can still hire rowing boats and pedalos – both of which are dog-friendly. At the time of writing, it cost £10 to hire a boat for 45 minutes.

Pets are also welcome to walk along the town’s Britannia Pier . They can even join their owners in the arcades to play the penny slots and grabber machines. Another great dog-friendly attraction is the Merrivale Model Village , where fantastic photo opportunities abound. The model village spans just over an acre and depicts a town centre as well as a zoo, castles and much more. Adult tickets cost £8.99 and include a game of crazy golf. Both the pier and model village are seasonal attractions so be sure to check the latest opening times before you go.

Ernie and Stan test their sea legs on the Norfolk Broads

If you’re keen to explore the Norfolk Broads, day boats can be hired all year round. Martham Ferry and Maycraft are among the companies that welcome dogs. But we booked with Herbert Woods because it was one of the only firms we found that rented boats by the hour. This was perfect for us because we weren’t sure how sturdy the boys’ sea legs would be! We picked up our boat from Herbert Woods’ HQ in Potter Heigham and paid £22 for the hour’s hire. You can take boats out for much longer though, or even book pet-friendly cruisers to sleep on.

Fans of vintage vehicles will enjoy visiting the East Anglia Transport Museum , too. The attraction, in Carlton Colville, is the only place in Britain where you and your dog can view and ride on all three principal forms of public transport from the early 20th Century – trains, buses and trams. Dogs are welcome throughout the site, but are not allowed in the shop or Terminus Tearoom. Adult tickets to the museum – which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2022 – cost £9. All rides are included in the entry price.

Ernie and Stan enjoy a run on Lowestoft beach

Dog-friendly Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Lowestoft: the best walks

Head to the beaches – many of which are lovely and sandy. While a number of beaches in the area have dog restrictions during the summer months, plenty of others are pet-friendly all year round. Great Yarmouth’s main beach is only accessible to dogs from October to May, for example. But its southern beach – to the south of Wellington Pier and the Pleasure Beach – is dog-friendly 365 days of the year. Click here to find out about beach restrictions in Norfolk (for Great Yarmouth and Gorleston), or click here to find out where dogs can go in Suffolk (Lowestoft area).

Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve is a great place to visit with your dog – although pets must be kept on lead at all times. The marshes, which are maintained by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, are the southern gateway to the Broads National Park. The network of marsh, fens, meadow and dykes is a paradise for birds and cattle graze on the land during the summer months. More than 25 different species of dragonfly have also been spotted here, which is impressive! There are several walking trails around the 405-hectare site ranging from 30 to 90 minutes in length. To see a map of the routes, click here .

Banksy's We're All In The Same Boat at Nicholas Everitt Park in Oulton Broad

Nicholas Everitt Park , next to Oulton Broad, is also a great place for a dog walk. The park has a large green where you can see boats sailing past, a play area and a shady wooded section. If you keep your eyes peeled, you’ll be able to spot an authentic Banksy portrait, too. The famous street artist left a little calling card on a bridge when he visited the area as part of his 2021 ‘Great British Spraycation’. To see the other locations Banksy ‘tagged’ in Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Lowestoft, click here .

Visitors to Lowestoft should also follow the Red Herring Trail to learn about the Scores – a series of narrow lanes unique to the town. The paths in the cliff were created to improve access between the historic High Street and the Beach Village. There are 14 Scores in total but only 12 can be accessed, and it’s easy to spend a couple of hours wandering amongst them. Every September, runners flock to Lowestoft to take part in the 4.75-mile Scores Race . If you’re feeling energetic, you can always try to recreate it on foot! The Lowestoft Mile also has some great walk suggestions that take in local landmarks such as Ness Point – the most easterly place in the UK.

The Doggy Diner in Gorleston

Dog-friendly Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Lowestoft: the best pubs and cafes

You can’t come to this area and not visit the Doggy Diner in Gorleston. This quirky cafe, just moments from the beach, serves everything from breakfast rolls to curries and handmade art and gifts. There is also a special doggy menu and handy items such as toys, coats and balls for sale. Be aware that the diner only accepts cash though, so go prepared.

In the heart of Yarmouth’s Golden Mile, you’ll find The Marine . Dogs are allowed in the bar at this family-friendly pub, which has live music at weekends. And pets are very welcome in the bar area of The California Tavern , a short drive from Great Yarmouth. The pub is just steps from the lovely sandy beach and while food is served all week, I can thoroughly recommend the Sunday carvery – it’s the stuff of legend.

One of the enormous burgers at The Smokehouse Ormesby

Meat lovers will enjoy a trip to The Smokehouse Bar & Grill in Ormesby where huge portions are the order of the day. You can tuck in to everything from buckets of wings to burgers at this American-themed diner. Veggies and vegans are well catered for too. Well-behaved dogs are welcome throughout the restaurant and there is plenty of outdoor seating. There are also regular bike meets and live music in the summer months and lots of midweek offers on food.

The Copper Smokehouse on Oulton Broad also serves epic portions of US-style dishes. The restaurant prides itself on serving fine BBQ food and also makes a real fuss of visiting dogs. It’s just over the road from No.142 Cafe & Bar , which is a great place to grab a coffee and a cake – or even tapas in the evening. Dogs are not allowed inside but are welcome in the quirky courtyard garden.

Dean's Beans Coffee Hut at Pakefield

Anyone visiting Pakefield should pop in to Dean’s Beans Coffee Hut . You can’t miss this little blue hut, overlooking the beach, which serves a wide range of hot drinks and snacks to go. It also has a jar of treats on the counter for visiting dogs, which Ernie and Stan were very pleased to discover. Nearby pubs The Jolly Sailors , The Trowel & Hammer and The Oddfellows Arms also allow pets inside and serve excellent pub grub.

Dogs will get lots of fuss at The Stanford Arms in Lowestoft, which specialises in craft beer and real ale. Depending on what day of the week you visit, you can enjoy wood-fired pizza – or a free bowl of chilli if you take part in one of the popular music quizzes. Lowestoft’s Harbour Inn is also a treat for foodies. The waterfront pub has recently been revamped and has regular special offers. There’s also a takeaway hatch if you’re in a hurry.

Room at The Coach House Suffolk

Dog-friendly Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Lowestoft: where to stay

The Coach House Suffolk , in Carlton Colville, is incredibly dog-friendly and pets get their own monster breakfasts. The hotel has recently been refurbished and is just a five-minute drive from the sandy beaches of Pakefield. The East Anglia Transport Museum is also right next-door. Pets are also welcome at The Hog Hotel in Pakefield and in Great Yarmouth, dog owners should check out the family-run Furzedown Hotel and the Imperial Hotel .

If you prefer self-catering accommodation, check out the apartments and cottages offered by Suffolk Coastal Escapes . They are all located in Pakefield, on the outskirts of Lowestoft, where the beach is dog-friendly all year round. The majority of its properties, such as Avocet and Seagull Cottage , also have enclosed gardens. Alternatively, try Brig Cottage in Scratby , a 10-minute drive from Great Yarmouth. It can be booked via East Ruston Cottages , which specialises in pet-friendly holiday accommodation in Norfolk.

Ernie explores Great Yarmouth beach with Britannia Pier in the background

How do I get to Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Lowestoft?

The region is approximately a three-hour drive from London and can be easily accessed from all parts of the UK. From the South East, you simply need to get on either the M11, A11, A47 (previously the A12) or A14. And if you’re coming from the Midlands or the North, look for the A47 or A14.

Greater Anglia trains serve both Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft with journey times of around 2hrs 20mins from London. National Express coaches regularly call in to the towns, too. If you’re travelling by air, Norwich International Airport is the closest place to fly in to, being just a 35-minute drive from Great Yarmouth.

Where can I find out more?

For further tourist information, check out the Visit Great Yarmouth and Discover Lowestoft websites. More ideas for things to see and do in the area can also be found on The Suffolk Coast and the Visit Norfolk sites.

2 thoughts on “ Ruff Guide to… Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Lowestoft ”

This article was very helpful i live in Belton near Great Yarmouth & we have a new puppy & was looking for some places to take him with us. I did not know some of these places existed or excepted dogs so this was very helpful & informative, thank you very much for sharing 👍😉 helped us alot 😀.

Thank you so much for this great information. Britain is supposed to be a nation of dog lovers but so many places ban dogs like they are some sort of vermin. All pets are not just animals, they’re part of our families. I am with our dog virtually 24/7, so why can’t she enjoy the things that we do? I understand places like food stores etc but when they say that dogs aren’t allowed on the beaches, this angers me. We live near a beach which at most times of the year is invaded by those humans, who leave tons of beer cans, hot food wrappers and all the contents of their unwanted packed lunch items. ‘They’ don’t clean up after themselves but responsible dog owners like us ensure we do; we even have our own dog bins to throw the waste away, unlike the humans who look at the rubbish bins and drop whatever rubbish they have in the hands on the sand. Once again, thank you so much much for this helpful information.
