The Schengen visa for short stay allows you to stay in Portugal for a maximum period of 90 days. It is usually requested for reasons of tourism, business or family visits.

Who can request a short-term Schengen visa?

Any foreigner who is not a national of a Member State of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland can request a Schengen visa for short stay.

The presentation of the Schengen visa to enter Portugal is mandatory for any national of a country listed in Annex I of the Visa Code .

Where request a short-term Schengen visa?

• Portuguese consular offices (Embassies and Consulates)
• Consular representations of European Union countries that have jurisdiction, in case there is no Portuguese consular office.

What are the documents and requirements to request a short-term Schengen visa?

You can consult all the necessary documents and requirements on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) .

The visa does not automatically guarantee entry into Portugal. At the border, or at any other checkpoint, you may have to present additional documentation proving that you meet the requirements for entering the Schengen area, such as proof that you have sufficient means to cover your stay and the return journey, for example. You can consult the full list of supplementary documentation that may be requested in Annex I of the Borders Code .

What is the price to request a short-term Schengen visa?

Usually, it costs 80€.

For nationals of countries with facilitation agreements with the European Union (EU) and children from the age of six and under 12 , it costs 40€.

It is free of charge for:

• children under the age of six (at the date of submission of the visa request)
• students and teachers when travelling on study or training trips
• researchers travelling for the purpose of scientific research
• representatives of non-profit organizations up to 25 years old participating in seminars, conferences, cultural or sports events organized by non-profit organizations
• family members of nationals of Member States of the EU, EEA or Switzerland.

What is the deadline to request a short-term Schengen visa?

You must submit your request between 6 months and 15 days before the date you intend to enter Portugal. In duly justified cases you can request the visa less than 15 days before the date you want to enter Portugal.

When requesting, the consulate may require an interview. This interview must take place within two weeks of being requested. In urgent and duly justified cases, the consulate may waive the interview or schedule it immediately.

Understand the Visa Type You Need

If your plan involves a short trip to Portugal, lasting up to 90 days, whether it’s for tourism, visiting friends and family, or business purposes, you should apply for a short-stay visa, commonly referred to as a C-type or Schengen Visa.

However, if your visit involves other purposes or you plan to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days, you’ll need a long-stay visa, also known as a D-type visa.

Short-Stay Visa (C) Types

• Airport Transit Visa : For transiting through Portuguese airports to reach a destination outside the Schengen Area.
• Tourist Visa : Designed for those wanting a vacation or sightseeing experience in Portugal.

Long-Stay Visa (D) Types

If you’re planning to stay in Portugal for more than three months, you’ll need to apply for a long-stay visa (D-type).

There are two types of long-stay visas in Portugal: temporary and residency authorization, depending on how long you plan to stay.

• Temporary stay visas are for stays of less than a year and allow both entry and residence in Portugal. They are valid for the entire duration of your stay and permit multiple entries.
• Residency visas allow two entries and are valid for up to 4 months. Within this period, visa holders must request a residency permit from the Immigration and Border Services (SEF).

These visas cover various purposes, including:

• Work visa. You need a Portugal work visa if you have an employer or work contract set up in the country.
• Startup visa. You can apply for this visa if you want to establish a start-up business in Portugal.
• Retirement visa. If you want to retire in Portugal, you can apply for a retirement visa, provided you have enough money to support yourself.
• Working Holiday visa. You can apply for this visa if you are from countries that have an agreement with Portugal and are between the ages of 18 to 35, so you can spend a holiday there and work at the same time.
• Family visa . You need to apply for this visa if you want to join a family member who lives in Portugal.

• If you are a resident of Belarus or Russia you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through BLS International .
• If you are a resident of Bosnia and Herzegovina or the United Kingdom you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa applications through VFS Global .
• If you are a resident of North Macedonia you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa applications through the French visa application center TLS Contact .
• If you are a resident of Albania you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa applications through the Italian Embassy in Tirana or the Italian Consulate General in Vlorë.
• If you are a resident of Kosovo you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa applications through the Italian Embassy in Prishtina, Kosovo.
• If you are a resident of Montenegro you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa applications through the Slovenian Embassy in Podgorica, Montenegro.

Residents in all other European countries not mentioned above have to submit their Portuguese Schengen visa applications to the Portuguese embassy or consulate in their country of residence.

Applying from a country in Africa

• If you are a resident of Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the Spanish visa application center BLS International .
• If you are a resident of Benin or Burkina Faso you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the French visa application center Capago.
• If you are a resident of Democratic Republic of the Congo you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the Belgian visa application center CEV .
• Residents of Mali should submit their application at TLS Contact in Algeria.
• Residents of Rwanda are under the jurisdiction of the Belgian visa application center.
• Residents of Botswana are under the jurisdiction of the German visa application center.
• Residents of the Republic of the Congo are under the jurisdiction of the French visa application center.
• Residents of Eswatini, Mozambique Seychelles, Somalia and South Sudan should submit their application at VFS Global in Mozambique.
• Residents of the Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Senegal should submit their application at VFS Global in Senegal.
• Residents of Lesotho and South Africa should submit their application at VFS Global in South Africa .

Countries where you can apply for a Portuguese visa at the Embassy or Consulate of another Schengen country

Residents in all other African countries not mentioned above have to submit their Portuguese Schengen visa applications to the Portuguese embassy or consulate in their country of residence.

Applying from a country in Asia

• Residents of Bhutan, India, and Nepal should submit their application at VFS Global in India.
• Residents of Brunei and Indonesia should submit their application at VFS Global in Indonesia.
• If you are a resident of Jordan, Kuwait, or Lebanon you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the Spanish visa application center BLS International .
• If you are a resident of Azerbaijan you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the French visa application center Capago.
• If you are a resident of the Philippines you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the Greek visa application center GVC.
• Residents of  Cambodia, Syria, and  Uzbekistan are under the jurisdiction of the French visa application center.
• If you are a resident of Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the German visa application center VisaMetric.

Residents in all other Asian countries not mentioned above have to submit their Portuguese Schengen visa applications to the Portuguese embassy or consulate in their country of residence.

Applying from a country in South America

• If you are a resident of Paraguay you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa applications through Spanish Embassy in Asunción.
• If you are a resident of Uruguay you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa applications through the Italian Embassy in Montevideo.
• If you are a resident of Bolivia, or Ecuador you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the Spanish visa application center BLS International .
• If you are a resident of Brazil, Chile, or Suriname you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa applications through VFS Global in your country .

Residents in all other South American countries not mentioned above have to submit their Portuguese Schengen visa applications to the Portuguese embassy or consulate in their country of residence.

Applying from a country in North America and the Caribbean

• If you are a resident of the United States and the Bahamas you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through a VFS Global center in the US .
• If you are a resident of the Dominican Republic you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the Spanish visa application center BLS International .
• If you are a resident of Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, or Panama you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the Spanish Embassies or Consulates General in your country.
• If you are a resident of El Salvador or Saint Lucia you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the French Embassies or Consulates General in your country.
• If you are a resident of Trinidad and Tobago you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the German Embassy in Port of Spain.
• If you are a resident of Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, or Venezuela you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the Portuguese Embassy in Caracas or the Portuguese Consulate General in Valencia, Venezuela.
• If you are a resident of Antigua and Barbuda or Cuba you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the Portuguese Embassy in Havana, Cuba.

Residents in all other North American and Caribbean countries not mentioned above have to submit their Portuguese Schengen visa applications to the Portuguese embassy or consulate in their country of residence.

Applying from a country in Oceania

• If you are a resident of Australia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, or Tonga you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the Portuguese Embassy in Canberra, or the Portuguese Consulate General in Sydney, Australia.
• If you are a resident of the Cook Islands or New Zealand you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the French Embassy in Wellington.
• If you are a resident of Fiji you are required you are required to submit the Portuguese Schengen visa application through the French visa application center VFS Global in Fiji .

Residents in all other Oceanian countries not mentioned above have to submit their Portuguese Schengen visa applications to the Portuguese embassy or consulate in their country of residence.

Who Should Apply for a Schengen Visa at the Portuguese Embassy/Consulate/VAC?

If Portugal is the only country in the Schengen Area you plan to visit, it’s straightforward – apply at the Portuguese embassy/consulate or the authorized Visa Application Center (VAC) in your country of residence.

However, if your journey includes Portugal and at least one more Schengen state, apply at the Portuguese embassy/consulate/VAC in your country of residence only if:

• You will spend more days in Portugal than in the other Schengen countries.
• You will spend an equal amount of time in each country, but you are starting your Schengen adventure by entering through Portugal.

You can’t apply for a short-stay Portuguese visa from a country where you are currently on a short-stay visa. You must hold a residence permit in the country where you are applying.

Complete & Download the Visa Application Form

Once you know you need a short-stay visa to go to Portugal and you’ve figured out the type of visa you need and where to submit your application, the next thing to do is fill out the visa application form.

Here are two available options to complete your Portugal Schengen visa application:

• Online. You can initiate your application online through the official website of Portugese Government . However, please note that not all countries are eligible for online applications. If your country is not eligible, you will be directed to apply in person after signing in and answering a few questions.
• In person. Alternatively, you can apply in person for your Portugal Schengen visa.

Requesting and Completing the Portugal Schengen Visa Application Form Online

Here’s the step-by-step process for how to fill out the Portugal visa application form online:

• Visit the ePortugal website .
• Register or  Log in to your account.
• Start the visa application process.
• Complete the visa questionnaire.
• Complete the visa application form.
• Confirm your Portugese Schengen visa application.

Step 1: Visit the ePortugal website

Visit the ePortugal website . (You can select your preferred language from five options (Portuguese, English, Russian, Ukrainian, or Chinese) located at the top-left corner of the page.)

Step 2: Register or Log in to your account

If you already have an account, please log in. If you don’t have an account yet, go ahead and register.

Complete the required fields with the needed information.

Under “ Registration ,” you must provide your personal information such as name, surname, date of birth, nationality, email address, etc

Once you have registered, you will receive an email with the confirmation code. Copy the confirmation code and paste it into the E-visa platform.

After 5 hours, the confirmation code becomes invalid.

Step 3: Start the visa application process

Once you log in to your account, click on “ Apply for a Visa” and continue your application process.

Step 4: Complete the visa questionnaire

Continue to complete the “Questionnaire to Apply for a Visa” and choose the answers that apply to you and your purpose of visiting Portugal.

Once the questionnaire is completed, it will show you what kind of visa you need and what requirements must be fulfilled for that visa.

Depending on your country of origin, you will be notified of whether you can proceed with the online application. If the diplomatic missions (embassy/consulate) of Portugal in your home country do not have the online service available, you must continue your application in person .

If this doesn’t apply to you, you can continue filling out the application form online by clicking “Next .” If it does, skip to the section “Requesting a Portugal Schengen Visa in Person.”

Step 5: Complete the visa application form

Continue to complete the visa application form, which is divided into 6 sections: Identification, Doc. Travel, Trip, Visa/Various, References and Attachments.

You can find the rules for filling out the application form at the top of the page under “ Filling Rules .” Read them carefully and continue to provide the required information.

In the first section, “ Identification ,” you must provide your personal information. Fields 1, 3,4,7 , and 8 are automatically filled with the information you provided when you registered. Field 10 must be filled only if the applicant is a minor (under the age of 18).

Continue to the “ Doc. Trave l” section and provide the required data for your travel document (passport). Make sure the information you put in the sections to match the one in your travel document.

Under the section “ Trip ,” you must provide information about your profession and about your trip to Portugal. Fields 23 (1) and 25 (1) are automatically filled.

Section “ Visa / Various ” includes questions about your visa, entries, fingerprints, etc.

Section “ References ” requires information about where you will be accommodated during your stay in Portugal. This includes the person(s) or organizations inviting you to Portugal or the hotel you are booking.

Field 32 requires information about financial means to show you can support yourself financially during the time you spend in Portugal.

The final part of the visa application form is “ Attachments .”

Here you will be provided with the list of documents that you need to enclose with your application for a Portugal Schengen visa. Read the list carefully and make sure you have all the required documents.

Below the document checklist, you’ll find a section to attach your documents:

• The documents must be in PDF format and not more than 2MB.
• The photograph must be attached in JPG format and not more than 30Kb.

Please note that you can still submit your request for a visa without attaching any documents or photos, but doing so will prolong the processing time for your visa application.

Step 6. Confirm your Portugese Schengen visa application.

After attaching the document, click on “ Submit ” to finalise your visa application. Once you click “submit,” your application, along with the attached documents, will be downloaded automatically to your computer as a PDF file. Please ensure to print the file and bring it with you on the day of your visa appointment.

You will also receive a confirmation email verifying your visa application and instructions on appearing in person at the nearest embassy/consulate or visa application centre in your country. How to Change or Cancel My Appointment?

To cancel or change an appointment for your Portugal visa, you need to contact the designated visa centre where you booked your appointment for your visa:

• If you booked an appointment at a visa application centre (VFS, BLS, or TLS), you can cancel your appointment via their websites which all have a designated “cancel appointment” button.
• If you booked an appointment at an embassy/consulate, you need to contact the embassy/consulate for cancellations. Usually, they have an email posted on their website specifically for cancellations.

If, after your appeal request, your visa is still denied, you can appeal at the Administrative Court in Berlin.
• Re-apply for your visa. You also have the option to re-apply for your visa, ensuring you’ve addressed all the reasons for your initial refusals. Please note that even in this case, you still need to submit a new application.

Please note that if you submit a new application while you’ve already submitted a request for an appeal, the processing of your appeal will be stopped while your new application is taken into consideration.

How Can I Appeal a Refusal?

To appeal a denial notice of your Portugal Schengen visa, you have the following options:

• Appeal at the Portugal embassy/consulate that processed your application. You can appeal the decision within 15 days of receiving notice of the refusal, revocation, or annulment. This appeal follows Article 191 of the Administrative Procedure Code (CPA).
• Appeal to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Alternatively, you can appeal to the superior administrative entity, which in this case is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This appeal must be made within 3 months of receiving notice of the refusal, revocation, or annulment. No, your visa fee is non-refundable as it accounts for the costs and time it takes to process your application. Please note that even if your application is denied, you won’t receive a refund.

Following is the minimum daily required amount for bearing expense of stay in Portugal. An applicant is required to show the amount which is enough for the days he/she intends to spend there:

As of February 20, 2024, one Euro is equal to Rs298.59. It means you need to have around Rs671,827 in your bank account if your stay is for 30 days in Portugal.
