The 32nd annual St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour will take place May 10–12. Participating studios will be open to the public from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. May 10–11; and from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. May 12. Entrance to all studios is free.

This year’s hosts are Linda Christianson, Guillermo and Alana Cuellar , Peter Jadoonath, Janel Jacobson, Ani Kasten, Matthew Krousey, Jeff Oestreich and Will Swanson. An interactive Google Map for the tour is available at minnesotapotters.com .

While some visitors try to do the entire tour in a day, ArtReach St. Croix executive director Heather Rutledge makes a weekend of it, taking time to visit each studio with her mom, who drives up from Iowa for Mother’s Day Weekend. “It’s really something that, in its niche, is very famous—and it’s right here in our backyard. How lucky,” Rutledge says.

The hills are alive with pottery: The 31st annual St. Croix River Valley Pottery Tour

Outside Shafer, Minn., past honey stalls and grazing cows, rolling green hills are dotted with handcrafted pottery. Folks from around the world have descended on the valley for one of the biggest ceramic events in the country: The annual St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour , which runs May 12-14.

Trevor Simon, a pottery enthusiast, has traveled from London.

“This is Rome; this is Hollywood in the ceramics world,” Simon says. He’s standing amid tables filled with wares on the grassy hilltop at the Guillermo Cuellar Pottery studio. “Ceramics is rock'n'roll. It looks like it's quiet, but what it takes to make these things — the autobiography that goes into it — is personal, and helps people get out of mass culture, slow their lives down. I mean, they’re mystics. Imagine sitting in the forest all day, just making stuff, you’re arguing with the clay, trying to get it into the shape that you want. It's a proxy on life. So, people that live in cities are coming here because everything slows down.”

A line of people

The tour features eight different studios, showcasing the works of local talent, as well as artists from across the globe — 73 potters in total. The event is so well-attended that the studios hire parking attendants to direct traffic.

An hour before the tour opened on Friday, attendees were already lining up in the studio driveways. Friends Kim Burnham and Emily Grisbeck, of Minneapolis, came early so they could get the work of a certain artist before it sold out: a mug by Montana artist Sue Tirrell.

“We got here at 9:30 a.m. so we could essentially race up here and get one,” says Burnham, who is a herself is an artist, part of the Rogue Potters collective. She proudly holds up a mug painted with a mermaid.

Guillermo Cuellar Pottery has long been one of the studios at the heart of the tour. This year, Guillermo Cuellar is hosting the event with his daughter and fellow potter Alana Cuellar. Their event features the work of 10 artists mixed together across dozens of tables.

Two people

“So, what you get is the effect of abundance,” Alana Cuellar says. “You can see the relationships between pots from different potters.”

Guillermo Cuellar says that Minnesota’s strong pottery community is because of Warren McKenzie, a famous craft potter who died in 2018, who taught generations of potters the medium.

“Pottery has an incredible, long, rich tradition in Minnesota,” Guillermo Cuellar says. For Cuellar, it’s all about community.

“All of my pots have to do with having people come together in community and food, family and friends, and having them sit around a pot, a teapot, or a casserole or hot dish and focus on healthy food, community and friendship,” Guillermo Cuellar says. “So, that's what I think this event is.”

Pottery on a table

About five miles up the St. Croix River, next to Franconia Sculpture Park, is one of the event’s newer hosts, Peter Jadoonath. Here, tables stacked full with vases, bowls, mugs and more nestle up against a plowed cornfield.

“The little overcast day has made it so the colors are just popping, the birds are chirping,” Jadoonath says. “It's a gallery, but it's in your backyard.”

He says the pottery world is tight knit because the craft keeps the artists humble.

“There's no forgiveness in the material. It really humbles you. You can make the best work and it can crack in the firing; it can crack while it’s drying and you could drop it. It’s that humbleness that the material gives you. We all know what we're dealing with here,” he says. “What's being celebrated this weekend is, it's about pots and people are coming to buy pots — but there's also me and my family, and then with the artists that come here, you become a family, the family gets bigger.”

The pottery tour runs through 5 p.m. Sunday, May 14.

The latest news and events across all forms of the arts.

Delivered every Friday.

Last year at this time, we talked with Minnesota potter Matt Krousey about the 28th Annual St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour . This Minnesota Mother’s Day weekend tradition that draws thousands of people to seven potters’ studios for three days of shopping and socializing. For the first time in its history, the tour was going virtual, the only choice available in a deadly pandemic.

No one thought this year would be a repeat. By now, the potters are pros at marketing themselves and their work online. For some, that has been a big change. As Krousey said last year, “I want to be a Luddite, but it’s not an option anymore.”

Potters work with clay and fire, glazes and paints. It’s a hands-on occupation. Melissa Weiss digs her own clay. Until very recently, Dan Finnegan worked in a studio without electricity. Many potters live in small towns, in woods or the countryside. Krousey gets some of his inspiration from the flora and fauna who share his land in Harris. One of the pleasures of taking the actual tour is driving through the scenic St. Croix Valley, with its curving roads and tiny towns.

The St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour

The tour starts at 10 a.m. Friday (May 7) and continues through Sunday (May 9). You can learn more about the potters here . Click on STUDIOS in the menu up top. A directory of all the potters’ online shops is here and will stay up after the sale.

Sometime in April, Krousey gathered his guest potters for a group Zoom, during which they talked about their work, their lives, the challenges of the past year and the tour. Three of Krousey’s guests couldn’t be there, but a new guest was, Kyle Lee from Brooklyn, New York. (OK, so not all potters live in small towns.) You can watch the Zoom here . It will give you a taste of what it’s like to meet the potters face-to-face. Barring some other unforeseen apocalyptic incident, we’ll be doing that again next year.

St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour

pottery tour mn

Every year during Mother’s Day weekend, the annual St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour attracts thousands of patrons to admire work by the country’s most accomplished potters—many of whom hail from Minnesota. The valley has historically been home to a variety of artists creating everything from ceramics and sculpture to jewelry and paintings. Over the past couple of decades, the event has garnered a reputation as being one of the best tours of its kind, and this year’s 24th incarnation was no exception.

This year’s tour stopped at seven  along the valley, all of which were located within Minnesota’s borders. The tour kicked off on a blisteringly hot Friday, though the weather failed to keep away the crowds of pottery fans. Every host has the freedom to invite the artists whose work is shown at their studio, and the wide array of creativity throughout the work was evident at first glance. Pieces ranged from functional to architectural, and many stretched the limits of what pottery can be.

In many ways an interactive event, all of the artists were present and available to answer questions about their work. A sense of camaraderie pervaded the event, both between the artists and the public and the artists themselves. Minnesota is a great encourager of artistic expression, and the tour’s perpetual success is in no small part due to this encouragement and appreciation.

As a first-time attendee of the event, I was impressed by the thought that was put into every part of the proceedings, from the presentation of the art to the tasty snacks—spreads that included goat cheese and mango salsa, stuffed grape leaves, spicy carrot dip, baklava, freshly popped kettle corn, and hibiscus iced tea. Much of it was served in, and on, handmade cups and plates, a touch that distinguished the event from other art festivals of its kind. The mutual respect between artist and patron made the event all the more enjoyable—and a pen containing sleepy Labrador puppies at my second stop didn’t hurt either!

But pottery was the order of the day, and this year’s collection did not disappoint. Personal highlights included Jenny Mendes ’ vaguely sinister anthropomorphized objects, including small masks; Michael Kline ’s delicate floral pieces; and Jim Lorio ’s lively glazed bowls. Each artist’s talent shone in individual ways, and the arrangement of pieces scattered amongst each other took nothing away from their singular integrity. Rather, it highlighted the extreme creativity of the artists and the ways in which potters are able to stretch and play within their medium.

From the picturesque settings to the beautiful works of art on display, the annual pottery tour demonstrated the truth behind its reputation as a world-class gathering of ceramic artists.
