George Stephanopoulos

George Stephanopoulos has been many things over the years. A political operative. A TV anchor. In his next project, he’s taking on a decidedly different role.

In “ Power Trip — Those Who Seek Power and Those Who Chase Them,” a new eight-part series set to stream on Hulu starting September 25, Stephanopoulos will serve as an analyst and adviser to a group of seven ambitious young “embed” reporters covering the 2022 midterm elections for ABC News . The show mixes on-the-ground reportage with the sort of mentor-student relationship that plays a central part in popular reality programs that range from “The Voice” to “Restaurant: Impossible.”

Popular on Variety

All the nation’s big TV-news outlets have built new massive streaming-video hubs, the better to capture attention from younger viewers more inclined to seek out the latest headlines from social media or on-demand video. What they haven’t done quite yet is develop programming tailored for that audience. While there are some exceptions, the bulk of streaming news shows launched so far rely on the usual presentation of an anchor sitting behind a desk.

“Journalists recognized they can tell their stories more directly and more genuinely without having the intermediary of a conventional newscast,” says Tim Hanlon, who advises media and advertising companies as CEO of Vertere Group. “The question is how does it all get paid for? Models are in process.”

“Power Trip” has few of the trappings of the evening news or Sunday public-affairs program. The seven embeds will fan out across the nation, potentially covering closely-watched Senate races in Pennsylvania or Georgia; examining voter trends in Texas or hot issues in California. As they set about to find stories and headlines for ABC, they will check in with Stephanopoulos, who will have to be poised to advise at a moment’s notice, depending on how stories develop.

ABC News and other networks have for decades relied on young embeds to serve as their eyes and ears across the country as various candidates campaign for higher office. ABC typically doesn’t send out embeds for midterms, says Stephanopoulos, but the issues Americans are voting on are so important and the polling margins for a Democratic or Republican victory are so thin that executives felt the effort would be warranted. “We always remembered in these campaigns hearing great stories from our embeds,” the anchor says.

Many of the biggest backers of TV news are turning to streaming to court viewers who may no longer watch broadcast or cable TV as often as news aficionados did in the past. They have good reason.  Approximately 84% of U.S. adults said they often or sometimes get news from a smartphone, computer, or tablet, according to a 2021 study by Pew Research Center, including 51% who say they do so often. The portion that gets news from digital devices continues to outpace those who get news from television, Pew found.

There have been some early efforts to shake up how news works in the streaming era. ABC News venerable “20/20,” for example, has retooled itself as a two-hour true-crime mystery for Hulu, as executives found subscribers were eager to watch that sort of storytelling. One early effort at the now-scuttled CNN+ featured anchor Kate Bolduan giving subscribers a quick rundown of “5 Things” they needed to know before their day kicked into high gear. The show typically lasted 20 minutes or less. Fox Nation has tapped various personnel at Fox News Channel to talk about hobbies and passions, like cooking or taking part in a book club.

Still, many of the broadband-news efforts, which include services such as NBC News Now and ABC News Live, rely heavily on anchor-desk formats and documentary-style programming . There’s a growing sense streaming viewers are eager to see something else.

Giving viewers a look behind the scenes could prove important, says Chris Wells, an associate professor of emerging media studies at Boston University. In an era when politicians have cast aspersions on newsgathering and the fragmentation of media has led to news outlets that cater to partisan interests, he says, some consumers crave a deeper view on how journalists work. “A lot of citizens don’t really understand what journalists are doing,” he says, and they want to see “not only the final story, but a little bit of the process behind it.”

ABC News has a decided interest in figuring it out. The Disney-backed unit recently launched a studio aimed at devising concepts for Hulu, Disney+ and other parts of its parent company’s media portfolio, which is tilting more heavily toward streaming (and is involved in the production of “Power Trip”). Stephanopoulos, who launched his own production company in October of last year , is expected to create projects suited for all parts of the Disney empire. Recent work has included an interview with former M16 spy Christopher Steele and a behind-the-scenes examination of the takedown of a terrorist threat that could have rivaled the Oklahoma City bombing.

George Stephanopoulos Productions has enlisted a group of savvy producers to help launch “Power Trip.” Ted Bourne, who has worked on the Showtime political documentary series “The Circus” and A&E’s documentary series “The First 48,” serves as an executive producer, along with Heather Riley, a longtime Stephanopoulos associate who earlier this year was named executive editorial producer of political programming and affairs at ABC News. Jonathan Greenberger, ABC News vice president and Washington bureau chief, will work as an executive contributor to the program, and his team manages the embedded reporters.

Among the group of young journalists are Libby Cathey, a reporter for ABCNews.com who covers the White House, Capitol Hill and breaking political news who has experience working for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and Snapchat. Abby Cruz is a producer/reporter for ABC News’ race and culture unit who fluent in Spanish and has worked for Washington City Paper. Paulina Tam is a segment producer for “Nightline” who once embedded with the Newark Police Department.

One week’s episode could center on what’s happening in a particular state, says Stephanopoulos, or on one reporter’s efforts to make headway with a source or story. But the team will also keep an eye on issues like how President Biden or former President Trump influence campaigns; the effects of the recent Supreme Court decision on abortion have on voters; and voting security.

The hope, says Stephanopoulos, is that “Power Trip” is worth taking more than once. If the initial series works well, the anchor says, he hopes ABC News will use it for the presidential elections in 2024.

George Stephanopolous

George Stay On Top of This

‘Power Trip’ with George Stephanopolous is an ineffective CNN+-like show hiding out on Hulu

September 25 th saw the premiere of the new George Stephanopolous docuseries Power Trip on Hulu. George Stephanopolous is a veteran ABC reporter (and former highly partisan Democratic political consultant) who we best know for his long-running work on the Sunday politics talk show This Week and the morning news program Good Morning America. The whole concept of George Stephanopolous productions might sound a bit absurd, given the fantastic failure of CNN+ earlier this year to leverage a serious streaming presence based on the popularity of political reporters.

But the quieter, steadier success of George Stephanopolous making exclusive shows for Hulu demonstrates the hubris of CNN+ in a lot of ways. A George Stephanopolous-branded news documentary is the kind of thing that a person is more likely to watch on a streaming service they already subscribe to then something they’d deliberately seek out a new one for.

Power Trip is, despite the deliberate George Stephanopolous branding, and frequent George Stephanopolous appearances, actually a subtle, concerted attempt to get away from the cult of personality style news coverage that has come to plague politics coverage in general. The term Power Trip refers to those who chase power- literally. Power Trip centers around various junior embed reporters whose job is basically to follow around major political figures in the weeks leading up to the midterms and just observe what they’re doing and why.

The editorial slant on Power Trip is, as is usual for neutral reporting, thoroughly obfuscated. The reporters refuse to express clear opinions on anything, and try to get other people to express those opinions for them, to varying success. Because the big news story at the time of filming was Florida governor Ron DeSantis sending Venezuelan migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, that’s the main thing we see. The embed reporter is the son of professionals, and has a Harry Potter book in his hotel room.

He asks DeSantis at a rally whether DeSantis’s people misled Venezuelan migrants with false promises into agreeing to get on the plane. DeSantis says no before running off, this not being a press conference. In one of the few genuinely interesting style flourishes in Power Trip, we see both the actual ABC News footage of the denial taken by the embed reporter, but also the wider Power Trip footage where the journalist himself is clearly visible.

Meanwhile, in Houston, another embed reporter covers the issue from another angle–Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar’s promise to investigate DeSantis for breaking the law in giving these migrants false promises. A native Spanish speaker raised in Philadelphia, this embed reporter also speaks to various Venezuelan migrants who Republicans approached for the scheme. None of them seem to have any real idea what was going on, they just know that operatives promised them jobs and a better way of life in exchange for agreeing to the plan. Ironically they might not be wrong, considering that the only reason we’re discussing the issue at all is because of DeSantis.

This is a common theme in Florida, Texas, and Arizona for this episode. Everyone seems to be in agreement that the entire story is political theater. Republicans sympathetic with DeSantis think this is justifiable, as he’s making an important rhetorical point about how blue states don’t want to deal with migrants either. The political enemies of DeSantis allege that the Venezuelans are human beings and don’t deserve this kind of treatment. Both arguments come off as correct, mostly because neither one really addresses the other.

Despite Power Trip being premised in part on showing the positive human face of reporters on the job at the news cycle, events as they play out are weirdly nihilistic. The degree to which the Martha’s Vineyard story has aged in only two weeks has only magnified the farce. The extremely neutral framing doesn’t help matters, making the young reporters seem hopelessly aloof despite all efforts on their part to persuade the viewer otherwise.

The sheer overbearing presence of George Stephanopolous is also a problem. In a late section quite off-brand from the rest of the episode, George Stephanopolous has a long talk with Nancy Pelosi which is framed by the knowledge that George Stephanopolous and Nancy Pelosi have known each other for a long time and have a good working relationship. This doesn’t exactly inspire a lot of confidence that George Stephanopolous will call out Nancy Pelosi for wrongdoing. And indeed, when Nancy Pelosi gives a very canned, very useless answer on the question of whether Democrats will win the midterm elections, there’s no pushback from George Stephanopolous.

Another problem with the reporter-centric premise is that it completely crowds out any discussion of why the Venezuelan migrants are even here in the first place, which would seem to be a pretty crucial component to understanding what either party intends to do beyond mere politicking to solve the problem. But Power Trip, much like the mainstream style news reporting it tries to act as apologism for, validates the tone and process of journalism over any actual material aims. That might be enough for the George Stephanopolous fans who make up enough of Hulu’s subscriber base to justify the continued release of his shows, but Power Trip isn’t likely to impress anyone else.

Watch the ABC News Studios docu-series "Power Trip" on Hulu

With the midterm elections just under two months away, ABC News Studios, George Stephanopoulos Productions (GSP) and Noble Beast have launched a new weekly political docu-series that brings viewers inside the top stories of the election campaign from an unparalleled, ground-level perspective on the candidates and their staff. " Power Trip – Those Who Seek Power and Those Who Chase Them ," the first weekly streaming docu-series produced from ABC News Studios, provides unmatched behind-the-scenes analysis powered by the ABC News political team led by George Stephanopoulos, anchor of "This Week" and co-anchor of "Good Morning America," and a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of seven embedded young reporters as they cover races across the country, recording, reporting and holding candidates of both parties accountable. "Power Trip – Those Who Seek Power and Those Who Chase Them" began streaming Sunday, Sept. 25, only on Hulu.

Stephanopoulos will serve as a key advisor and mentor to the group of young, ambitious reporters as they master the challenge of campaign reporting while often struggling personally with the grueling task at hand.

"The 2022 midterms will offer a lot of surprises and set the stage for the 2024 presidential race. This series showcases the next generation of our political reporting talent as they cover a historic election cycle," said Stephanopoulos. "I'm proud to help tell this story and guide the ABC News team as we give an intimate look at how today's cultural and partisan fractures are playing in races across the country."

With a visceral approach that has one foot on the trail following young reporters embedded with the campaigns and another foot back in the newsrooms where each key development is analyzed and dissected, "Power Trip" will capture real-world moments and slices of candidate life that viewers don't normally see and pull back the curtain on a premier news operation, revealing how that news is made. The docu-series will give viewers a first-hand experience of each week's most important campaign stories as they unfold and show why they matter. The embedded reporter program has played an important role in ABC News' election coverage for more than three decades. This year's class marks the first time the network has deployed embedded reporters for the midterm elections, giving viewers an inside, real-time look at the political landscape across the country.

'Power Trip' premieres: Getting answers from DeSantis, Texas sheriff on migrant flights -- and more

Airing on Hulu, the series follows "embeds" as they break news on the trail.

Days after announcing he was opening a criminal investigation into Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flying migrants to Massachusetts , Bexar County, Texas, Sheriff Javier Salazar sat down with ABC News' Abby Cruz to answer questions about that decision.

"I'm doing my job in my county," Salazar told Cruz. "I can't even imagine, you know, realistically, why does a governor from another state care what's happening in Bexar County?"

More than 1,000 miles away, ABC News' Miles Cohen was seeking answers from DeSantis as well, pressing him during a campaign event in Palm Beach, Florida, about Salazar's probe.

power trip hulu wikipedia

"Power Trip" follows 7 young reporters as they chase down candidates in the lead up to the midterms with George Stephanopoulos guiding them along the way.

"How would you respond to the sheriff in Texas who's saying that these migrants were lured under false pretenses to boarding those planes?" Cohen asked DeSantis.

"That's false," the governor replied while greeting supporters -- and declining to answer Cohen's follow-up questions.

All of this plays out on "Power Trip," a new docuseries that premiered Sunday on Hulu.

"Power Trip" follows ABC News' George Stephanopoulos and the network's political team along with seven "embed" campaign reporters who have fanned out across the country this election cycle , trailing after candidates, lawmakers and politicians, hearing from local voters and getting the latest updates and answers on the news shaping each day.

Cohen and Cruz are two of ABC News' seven embeds, along with Libby Cathey, Hannah Demissie, Lalee Ibssa, Will McDuffie and Paulina Tam.

Together they are reporting from every key battleground -- from Arizona to Wisconsin, Georgia to Ohio -- in the final weeks before the November midterms that will determine control of Congress and help define the two years before the next presidential election.

’Power Trip: Those Seeking Power and Those Who Chase Them’ is now streaming on Hulu.

In "Power Trip," the embeds work under Stephanopoulos' tutelage as the "This Week" anchor and "Good Morning America" co-anchor -- and former Bill Clinton adviser -- offers advice and encouragement."You're going to have to cover policy, politics, people in a very polarized environment," Stephanopoulos tells the embeds in the premiere episode. "We're going to run you ragged."

The premiere also sees Stephanopoulos talking with Cohen after Cohen followed up with DeSantis on the latest migrant headlines.

"It's a great learning experience," Stephanopoulos tells Cohen, adding, "Your question was on the news, totally fair and something that deserved a response."

Meet the embeds

In the premiere, Cathey, Cohen, Cruz and McDuffie take viewers behind the scenes of tracking the latest on immigration -- specifically DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's decision to send people by bus and by plane to Democratic-led cities and states, in protest of federal border policies.

Cohen begins in Green Bay, Wisconsin, at an event with DeSantis where conservative voters repeatedly celebrate his decision to transport migrants -- and repeatedly mention the possibility of DeSantis running for president.

"Why should it be their burden [in border states] when it should be Biden's burden?" one woman at the event tells Cohen. Says another man: "I've got friends down there that live there, they can't take care of these people anymore."

A former booker for "Good Morning America" and a Berkeley, California, native, Cohen says in "Power Trip" that he could have followed his family and become a doctor or lawyer. But he felt pulled in another direction.

"I wanted to really report, I wanted to go places, I wanted to meet people across America and figure out why they think what they think," he says.

While Cohen is with DeSantis, Cruz is in San Antonio, Texas, speaking with migrants at a local resource center and helping arrange an interview with Sheriff Salazar.

"We need answers," she says in the wake of DeSantis sending migrants to the island of Martha's Vineyard -- and suggesting more flights are coming -- as Salazar opened his investigation.

At the same time, speaking with migrants at the resource center -- like one man who says he is seeking work to help his kids and another with a tattoo about God to remind him to shrug off discrimination -- Cruz says she recognizes the human element to this story.

PHOTO: A screen grab from the first episode of Power Trip

"I remember going to Union Station [in Washington] and seeing the migrants get off the bus and I was like, Man they're here to get their American dream. They don't even know what's going on," she says.

A race and culture reporter with ABC News before becoming an embed, Cruz, who grew up in Philadelphia, well knows how immigration can intersect with elections.

"I'm mixing the stories that I know what to do, the stories that I feel like don't get covered. I'm mixing it with the politics because they intersect with each other," she says.

Sitting down with Salazar, she asks him to respond to the criticism that his investigation of DeSantis is -- as others say of transporting the migrants -- also a politically minded "stunt" and she notes that DeSantis told Cohen that Salazar was wrong about how the migrants were treated.

"I think the governor's got his opinions on it. I've got my opinions on it," Salazar says. "It occurred in my county, so I'm going to act appropriately according to the law. We have to determine what exactly happened -- what was said, what was done, how were these people treated while they were here in my county? And if we can prove criminal intent, then we may be charging somebody with a crime."

Embeds Cathey and McDuffie see in the "Power Trip" premiere how the latest immigration debate is touching many states. In Arizona, GOP gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake tells Cathey that she is "not a fan" of what Abbott and DeSantis are doing.

Despite agreeing with them that these tactics bring attention to the issue, Lake says she doesn't like that it is "making them [migrants] go further inland where we then can't track them down."

Afterward, Cathey, a Little Rock, Arkansas, native and ABC News digital reporter before becoming an embed, notes the value of getting Lake's feelings on the record.

"She said, 'I've been asked this before' -- I know she's been asked it before, but I haven't gotten the chance to ask it to her," Cathey says.

And in Delaware, McDuffie awaits the arrival of a plane that was rumored to be carrying more migrants, this time to President Joe Biden's home state.

But with all the focus on Abbott and DeSantis' moves, the plane never arrives.

"It's a part of what this job is, sometimes, that I'm learning is that you go and do a lot of stuff and you don't even end up getting anything or the story changes," says McDuffie, a New York native and former digital news associate at ABC News. "But that's why you've got to be everywhere -- just in case it turns out to be unexpected."

McCarthy and Pelosi diverge on midterms

While acting as a mentor to the embeds in "Power Trip," Stephanopoulos also makes news of his own. In Sunday's premiere, he interviews House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He asks her about voter feelings on the historically high inflation and on the migrants at the southern border -- and whether the GOP's focus on that, including by transporting them, will sway people.

"Our message is what this means to you and your home, at your kitchen table. Those are our frames," Pelosi says, contending that "inflation is a global issue" and touting Democrats' recent legislative wins.

"We're here to contrast between the Democrats and the Republicans," Pelosi tells Stephanopoulos.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy had a reaction to that, telling ABC News' Brittany Shepherd at the end of the "Power Trip" premiere -- at an event previewing the House GOP's campaign-season "Commitment to America" -- that Democrats "can't run on their record."

"The 'Commitment to America' is a plan for a new direction, one that will make our economy strong, will make our nation safe. It'd be a future built on freedom and give us check and balance inside Washington," McCarthy says.

As to Pelosi's criticism of Republicans as a threat to democracy, given how many embrace false claims about the 2020 election, McCarthy was not fazed. "It's idiotic," he said.

Pelosi told Stephanopoulos that voters will soon decide, with "six weeks and five days" to go.

"And we count every day."

"Power Trip" releases new episodes each Sunday on Hulu.
