All you need to know about Religious Travel
What should i wear when visiting a religious place.
Every religion has different requirements on what to wear when visiting a sacred site, so it's always best to ask your travel guide about the appropriate dress. However, a good general rule is to always dress modestly. Both men and women should wear long skirts or trousers covering the knees and tops covering the shoulders and chest. Some Islamic and Jewish religious sites, such as mosques, will require you to cover your hair, while Buddhist temples require you to take off your shoes.
What is the best time to visit the Holy Land?
Israel, also known as the Holy Land, is at its best in spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) when the temperatures are pleasantly warm, averaging around 26°C. Summer (June to August) heats up to an average of 32°C during the day, perfect for hitting the beach in Tel Aviv. The winter months (November to March) are cold and rainy, averaging around 15°C, and Jerusalem even sees occasional snowfall.
What is the most visited religious place in the world?
The Hindu Venkateswara Temple in India is said to be the most-visited religious place in the world, with around 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims visiting the temple every day. The renowned Sensoji Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, is another big contender, with around 30 million visitors every year.
Why is religious tourism important?
Religious tourism is one of the oldest and most special forms of travel, as pilgrims have travelled to pay homage to sacred places and icons for millennia. Religious tourism is now more important than ever as it helps to protect and conserve ancient holy sites, cultural treasures and spiritual traditions.

Christian Tours & Group Tour Packages 2024, 2025
What is a Christian Fellowship Package?
Have you been on a vacation that was not a blessing because you did not travel with other Christians? This list of Christian Packages is simply a means for you to enjoy the friendship, Bible study, and encouragement that you gain when traveling with people of like mind and faith. Many group leaders offer study tours and private group packages as well.
Reserve your tour at least 6 months in advance for an Early Booking Discount
Groups and parties of 6 or more click here for special rates, scheduled tours, christian tours: frequently asked questions.
Are there opportunities for spiritual enrichment and worship during the tours?
Yes, there will be opportunities for spiritual enrichment and worship during our Christian tours. You’ll get to visit and learn about sites that played a key role in the stories of the Bible and Christian history. These experiences also give you a chance to learn more about the world and the different cultures that have shaped it.
What type of accommodations can I expect during the tours?
Most of the tours we offer are all-inclusive, which means airfare, lodging, and most meals are included in the price of your tour. This includes everything from Ireland tours to cruises and tours of Alaska. You can find individual itineraries and tour details for each of our tour packages on our website, and you can contact us if you have any questions.
What safety measures are in place for travelers?
We can’t guarantee your safety, but we do take traveler safety seriously. Safety is a top priority with all of our Christian travel groups. We work with destination management companies who prioritize/commit to safety, and we’ve built strong relationships that allow us to provide an incredible experience whether you book one of our Europe or U.S. tours .
Are meals provided during the tours? Are dietary restrictions accommodated?
We provide meals and other accommodations during most of our tours, but you should check the details on our website before booking your tour. Hotels may also provide various options that can accommodate different types of diets, allergies, and other restrictions.
Can I customize my tour itinerary to include specific religious sites or activities?
We offer several Christian tours, so you can choose the tour that piques your interest. Some of our tours — including Italy and Greece tours and cruises —include optional activities and visits to religious sites. You can decide which sites you want to visit and spend your time relaxing on the shore or cruise ship when you’re not busy sightseeing. We do offer pre-nights or post-nights before and after our tours for those that want to take some time to rest, relax or get caught up on jet lag.
What is the group size for these tours?
Group sizes are typically between 25 and 35 people, although group sizes can vary. Some tour groups may be as large as 40–45 people, but it depends on the tour and the group leader. We try to maintain reasonably sized tour groups for our Christian vacations.
How far in advance should I book my Christian tour?
The sooner you book, the better. Our tour groups can fill up fast, but we do our best to give everyone a chance to visit other countries and learn about early Christian history throughout the world. Many of our tours offer an early reservation discount if you sign up for a tour 6+ months in advance. Keep in mind that you’ll also need to have a valid passport — and visa if required — before departing.
Do I need travel insurance for these Christian tours? Is it included in the package?
We strongly recommend purchasing a travel insurance plan — whether you’re booking one of our Christian Alaska cruises or a trip to Europe. Travel insurance charges can be added to your final bill, but they’re not included in your tour package. We can provide a total approximate cost for travel insurance when you book your tour.
Are there any extra fees or expenses not included in the tour package?
We do our best to offer tour pricing that includes as much as possible. You’ll need to pay a $300 (USD) deposit per person to book one of our Christian tours, $100 of which is non-refundable at time of deposit. However, most of our Christian travel packages include lodging, food, and all the other accommodations you’ll need during your trip. From Costa Rica tours to Alaska cruises, we offer a luxurious and enriching experience.
What is the cancellation policy for these tours?
You must notify Pilgrim Tours of your cancellation 91+ days before your departure date for a refund of your deposit minus service fees. Canceling on shorter notice will result in a smaller refund, and you won’t receive any refund if you notify us of your cancellation 7 days or fewer before your departure.
Can I extend my stay at any of the destinations beyond the tour dates?
Our Christian tours follow a specific itinerary, so you’ll need to stick with the tour group throughout the tour. During some of our tours, we’ll even travel to different countries and meet new tour guides throughout the trip. Travelers do have the option to book extra hotel nights either before the tour or after the tour.
Do you provide transportation between destinations?
We provide transportation for all of our Christian tours, from US to Germany tours . While transportation costs are included in the price of your tour, tips to guides and drivers aren’t covered.
What should I pack for the tour? Are there any specific clothing or items recommended?
You should pack appropriate clothing for the destination you’re visiting. Consider the culture you’re immersing yourself in and dress modestly according to cultural norms. You should also pack a phone charger, personal care products, medicine, and anything else you typically bring on a vacation.

Dear Maranatha Tours, Your company has put together one the best things I have ever experienced. I am very thankful for the trip of a life you made possible for me to enjoy and to be educated at the same time. I always dreamed about going to Israel and confirming my dreams, was more than I expected.
It was well organized and every day activity was outlined in the booklet or by the tour guide personnel. Malcolm and his staff were awesome. Malcolm is well educated about the place and most of all he was informative and patient. Thank God for people like him. His bus driver was humble and friendly. The hotel personnel was helpful in every way possible in the dining room and made sure I was please and comfortable.
I appreciated all that they and I want to thank each and every one in your staff for they all came together to make this possible for me. Thank you again and again.
I am yours truly,
Norma Summer
I just watched the Gethsemane video clip and relived my March 2013 experience. I remember the old gnarled olive trees. If they could only speak! My trip to Israel was a life-changing experience. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I learned so much. I’d do it again as soon as it becomes possible. As I continue to read my Bible I feel the need to revisit and heighten my appreciation for the land where my Lord lived while on earth. The Bible really comes alive after visiting Israel. Just one simple way is to recollect the large shrub covered with yellow flowers produced from the tiny mustard seed. When we crossed the Adam bridge, our host mentioned the Jericho crossing. I had never before noticed the name Adam in the book of Joshua! Now I never miss it! Sailing on the Sea of Galilee was unforgettable. Walking on the Via Dolorosa was a pensive journey and the Empty Tomb brought a feeling of exhilaration. There were so many places that brought my Bible alive – too many to mention. Even as I write memories are flooding my mind. As I said, I would go again.
This was a trip of a lifetime. More than I even had hoped. Our guide Malcolm was terrific and one of the most educated and informational people I have ever run across. The food was spectacular. The accommodations were great. Each day was filled with wonderful sites and a look back in history. Some of my favorite moments were the times we were singing in churches or the Shepherd's cave, the Sea of Galilee boat ride, communion at the garden tomb and the Holocaust museum. Having a rededication of my baptism in the Jordan River was a memorable experience. If I would have changed anything it would have been had to have more time at the museum as there was so much to see there. I also loved going to the marketplace and experiencing what life is like for people who live there. Thank you for the wonderful experience and I have been sharing it with all I am coming in contact with. Everything was well planned and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

About Maranatha Tours
The holy land's most trusted christian tour operator.
The most important decision you will make regarding a Spiritual tour is choosing the company that will arrange the tour for you, and must be sure you receive the best tour for their dollars spent. We present to you Maranatha Tours, Inc., family owned and operated for over 47 years.
Maranatha Tours was founded by Richard S. Reilly and Michael S. Reilly to promote Christian group travel. Dick Reilly’s unique background as a missionary in India, director of a mission society for 16 years, pastor, evangelist, and a Youth for Christ leader, brought unusual insight into the ways and means of successful group travel. Though Dick Reilly has passed on, his Christian philosophy used in establishing Maranatha Tours lives on. Dick’s son, Michael, as President of Fellowship Tours for 16 years, managed one of the largest tour operations for Christian group travel in the United States and has been President of Maranatha since its opening. We are family owned and have his son, Greg in sales, and daughter Jennifer handling all our operations. You will be very pleased with our staff’s professionalism and our concern for each detail.
Maranatha Tours specializes in Christian tours that visit places of the Bible or history in Israel, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Europe and more.

WHAT OUR ESTEEMED CLIENTS SAY ABOUT US
It is always a pleasure working with you and your team. You guys understand the importance of selecting the sites and details including selecting the right Christian guides in order for the Bible to come alive. You have trained your guides to know exactly how to work in tandem with pastors and allow the time to teach at sites. As far as pricing goes, we feel as though we got a 13 day trip for the price of a 10 day tour. For me the highlight was when you arrived in Jerusalem for our farewell dinner and shook my hand. That truly made me believe that you really knew what “customer service” meant and went the extra mile to make us feel special. We’re ready to book our next trip! Next year in Israel!
Thank you so much for making our trip possible in spite of all of the challenges we faced. I recall, when the war in Israel started it was three weeks before departure. All our folks thought we would lose all our money because no one would go to Israel with rockets flying. Insurance companies would not pay out anything because war is not covered. Two weeks later you emailed us and changed the dates to three months out at no added cost. Wow! That was the workings of a true Christian! You could have charged us more to go two months later. But you did not and that’s a God fearing Christian right there. Friendship Tours, your travel ministry, has my business for as along as I can travel.
Friendship Tours has been my only travel provider for three decades. From the Bible lands to Europe and the Reformation sites, they have always given me excellent service at the right price. I have always felt safe and satisfied. Their on the ground support has always made you know that every need will be covered. They are an industry leader you can trust.

The Seven Churches Tour: pilgrimage itineraries for the Jubilee
The Seven Churches Tour is an ancient devotional itinerary still undertaken by believers today. A pilgrimage to plan ahead of the 2025 Jubilee
- 1 Seven Churches Pilgrimage
- 2 The Seven Churches of Rome
- 3 Basilicas of Rome
The Seven Churches Tour is a fascinating route of devotion that stretches for about 20 kilometres, touching the seven most significant basilicas in Rome .
The sacred route begins from the majestic Basilica of St. Peter , the heart and symbol of Christianity, and continues along the Tiber River until it intersects with Viale Guglielmo Marconi, where stands St. Paul Outside the Walls , another of the major basilicas, which houses the tomb of St. Paul. From here, it continues along Via delle Sette Chiese to reach the Basilica of St. Sebastian Outside the Walls, in the Ardeatino district, along the Appian Way and then arrives on the Caelian Hill at the Basilica of St. John Lateran , the Cathedral of Rome, the principal place of worship of its diocese and the oldest and most important basilica in the West. Then you arrive at the Lateran, where stands the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme , built starting in the 4th century to house the relics of the Passion of Jesus, in particular part of the Cross, brought to Rome by St. Helena, Mother of Constantine. At the beginning of the extra-urban stretch of the Via Tiburtina, you encounter St. Lawrence Outside the Walls , next to which the municipal cemetery of Verano was built, and the pilgrimage concludes atop the Esquiline, where stands the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore , the only one to have maintained its original paleochristian structure. After the Jubilee of 2000 , the Basilica of St. Sebastian was replaced by a visit to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Divine Love.

With the opening of the Holy Door on December 24, 2024, the Jubilee of 2025 will begin, which, as tradition dictates, will take place mainly in Rome. The highlights and celebrations will take place mainly in Vatican City and in the papal basilicas of Rome . As in the past, believers will be able to obtain plenary indulgence by crossing the threshold of the four Major Basilicas: St. Peter’s Basilica , where the Holy Door will be opened, a symbol of welcome and forgiveness; the Basilica of St. John Lateran , considered the cathedral of Rome and the seat of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope; St. Paul Outside the Walls Basilica : one of the four papal basilicas of Rome, dedicated to the apostle Paul; Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore : one of the oldest and most important Marian churches in the world.

In addition to these, other churches and minor basilicas will likely be involved in the Jubilee route. This could be a splendid opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the ancient pilgrims along the Seven Churches route and appreciate the wonders of the capital.

Seven Churches Pilgrimage
The Seven Churches Tour is a pilgrimage tradition that dates back to the 4th century. On the occasion of the Jubilee , the pilgrimage took on an even more special meaning. In fact, in ancient times, to obtain plenary indulgence on the occasion of the Jubilee , it was necessary to fulfil four fundamental requirements :
- be in Rome;
- receive the sacrament of confession;
- visit the main basilicas of Rome, which on the occasion of the first Jubilee, proclaimed in 1300, were St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, to which St. John Lateran was added in the Jubilee of 1350 and that of St. Mary Major in the Jubilee of 1390;
- pray for personal spiritual health and for that of all Christians.
The churches had to be visited by Roman residents for 30 days, while for foreign pilgrims the required period was 15 days.
Plenary indulgence: meaning, origins and how to get it What is a plenary indulgence? Here’s why Pope Francis granted it to those participating in the Year…
The Seven Churches Tour was completed on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1550 in response to the unrestrained secular celebrations of Carnival. On that occasion, in addition to the four major basilicas already mentioned, the minor basilicas were added: St. Lawrence Outside the Walls, St. Sebastian Outside the Walls, and Santa Croce in Gerusalemme.
It was St. Philip Neri who gave great impetus to this tradition, in response to the unrestrained dissoluteness of the Roman Carnival, and this is one of the reasons why today the Seven Churches Tour is organized to coincide with the feast dedicated to him on May 26 (but is repeated in September). The tour takes place at night and is led by a Father of the Congregation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri.
Via delle Sette Chiese takes its name from the pilgrimage practice invented by St. Philip Neri and still connects the Basilica of St. Sebastian on the Appian Way with the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. The route wanted by the Saint and shared with the pilgrims of his time also included, in addition to stopping and praying at the seven Jubilee basilicas, a visit to the tombs of the first Christian martyrs. In fact, through the city, one reached the Roman countryside, where the Catacombs were located.
The Via delle Sette Chiese, also known as Via Paradisi, was a route that wound through the countryside outside the city walls. Along this route, one could admire the distant panorama of Rome, surrounded by the majestic Aurelian Walls, and find oneself near the Almone River, which bordered the hills of the Ostiense estates. This rural and suggestive scenery gave the road a particular, almost paradisiacal atmosphere, characterized by the tranquillity of the countryside and the panoramic view of the eternal city.
In the time of St. Philip Neri , the pilgrimage lasted two days and involved various devotional practices related to the number seven , one of the most significant for the Christian faith. Pilgrims recited seven penitential psalms, asking forgiveness for the seven deadly sins. They then gathered to meditate on the seven stages of the Passion of Jesus, the seven effusions of his blood, the seven words spoken by Christ on the cross, the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments, and the seven works of mercy.
The Seven Churches Tour is still today an act of traditional devotion practised especially during the Easter Triduum , or Time of Passion, between the evening of Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday, and in this case, the visit also includes a prayer near the Blessed Sacrament preserved on the Altar of Reposition, the designated place for the conservation of the Eucharist from the end of the Messa in Coena Domini on Holy Thursday until the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday.
The Seven Churches of Rome
Below are listed the seven Churches touched by the pilgrimage:
Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican – Located in Vatican City, it is the heart of Christianity and one of the most important churches in the world.
Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls – The Papal Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome, the largest after St. Peter’s in the Vatican. It stands on the Via Ostiense, where, according to tradition, the apostle Paul was buried after his martyrdom.
Basilica of St. John Lateran – It is the cathedral of the bishop of Rome, the Pope, and the oldest and most important of the four papal basilicas of Rome.
Basilica of St. Lawrence Outside the Walls – Located outside the city walls, it was built by Constantine near the tomb of the martyr Lawrence.
Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme – One of the seven churches built by Constantine, it is known for housing the relics of the Passion of Christ.
Basilica of St. Sebastian Outside the Walls – Located on the Appian Way, it is dedicated to the Christian martyr St. Sebastian.
Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore – One of the four papal basilicas of Rome, it is one of the oldest Marian churches in the world.
These seven basilicas offer an extraordinary opportunity to explore the rich history and artistic beauty of Rome , as well as representing places of significant spiritual importance for Catholic believers.
Pilgrimage to Rome: Among Christians’ Preferred Destinations A pilgrimage to Rome has always been one of the most significant spiritual experiences for Christians…
Basilicas of Rome
The Basilicas of Rome are traditionally divided between Major Basilicas and Minor Basilicas . The former are:
Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, or Vatican Basilica;
Basilica of St. John Lateran, Cathedral of Rome, or Lateran Archbasilica;
Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, or Ostian Basilica;
Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, or Liberian Basilica.
Each Major Basilica houses a papal altar and a Holy Door , which is opened on the occasion of the Jubilee, or Holy Year, and by crossing it is possible to obtain a plenary indulgence. The Lateran Basilica also houses the Pope’s cathedra , while the other three basilicas have a papal throne.
With its circular route of about 20 kilometres, the Seven Churches Tour touches the four major papal basilicas and three of the most important Minor Basilicas: the Basilica of St. Lawrence Outside the Walls, the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Basilica of St. Sebastian Outside the Walls (replaced since 2000 by the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Divine Love).

For Mormon Missionaries, Some ‘Big, Big Changes’
The church has loosened its strict rules for those evangelizing. And many members of Gen-Z are loving it.

Lauren attended church in London, Los Angeles and Paris and spoke with current and former missionaries to report this story.
- May 10, 2024
Andres Gonzalez, 19, stands on the balcony of his Los Angeles apartment, his hands in his suit pockets. It is his first week as a missionary, but today, instead of approaching people on the street, he is shooting a video that he will later post to social media.
After about a dozen takes, he is successful. “Hello! If you would like to learn more about Jesus Christ,” he says to the camera in Spanish, “contact me.”
Mr. Gonzalez is the image of the modern missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has changed many of its practices — from how missionaries preach to how they dress.
The faith, long known for sending tens of thousands of neatly and formally dressed young people across the globe each year to preach door to door, is encouraging new missionaries to spread the gospel on social media and, for some, with acts of community service closer to home.
As a church leader, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, put it, missionaries should feel comfortable sharing their faith in “ normal and natural ways .”
In the last few years, the church has also changed some rules for missionaries themselves — loosening restrictions on dress codes ( women can wear pants ) and how often they can call family members back home ( once a week , not just on Christmas and Mother’s Day).
To outsiders, the adjustments may seem small. But to missionaries who adhere to strict rules while on assignment, the shifts are dramatic.
“We’ve seen a lot of big, big changes,” Jensen Diederich, 23, said. He served his mission in Peru and said it was “monumental” when the church allowed him to call home weekly, instead of just twice a year.
The church believes missionary work is essential for the world’s salvation — that people must be baptized in the faith to get to the highest level of heaven after they die. Missionary work also helps increase the church’s membership, and it deepens many young members’ faith. Many missionaries begin their assignments just after they leave home. Instead of partying on a college campus, they commit themselves to the religion and develop habits that can last a lifetime.
One of those members was Senator Mitt Romney of Utah, who was a missionary in France in the 1960s. He has said the isolation of his mission allowed him to examine his faith without distraction . When asked about the changes, he said, “For young people of my generation, I think the separation from family and friends served us well.”
But he understands times have changed. “With today’s youth in near constant contact with one another, maintaining greater connection during a mission fits their life experience,” he added.
Many young church members say the new rules have made missionary service more attractive and realistic.
Kate Kennington, a 19-year-old with a mission assignment to London, said finding people online and messaging them is a more successful way of approaching potential converts. “It’s how I would want to be contacted,” she said.
“Knocking on doors and approaching people on the street are no longer seen as useful as they once were because of shifts in American culture,” said Matthew Bowman, a professor of religion and history at Claremont Graduate University who holds the chair of Mormon studies. He is also a church member.
For decades, missionaries’ clean-cut suits were signs of prosperity, Mr. Bowman said, and an effective way of appealing to converts. But they now feel “outdated.”
Many of the changes, especially the push to evangelize on social media, were fueled by the pandemic, which shut down in-person church gatherings and forced Latter-day Saints and Jehovah’s Witnesses to find alternatives to door-to-door preaching.
The missionaries use their phones to film videos of themselves promoting the church or sharing messages of faith. In one video , a missionary raps about his faith. In another , two missionaries throw a football and a Frisbee through an obstacle course in a church gym — an object lesson meant to visualize how Jesus Christ can help people overcome challenges.
So far, the changes appear to be working: In the last three years, as pandemic restrictions lifted and young members responded to an appeal from the church’s top leader for them to serve, the number of full-time proselytizing missionaries has risen by around 25 percent , according to church data. At the end of last year, the church had about 72,000 full-time missionaries serving around the world.
The church has just under 17.3 million members globally but has seen growth slow. From 1988 to 1989, during a surge in growth when the church expanded into West Africa , the church grew by about 9 percent . Last year, the church grew by about 1.5 percent .
A tradition of travel
Missionary work is a rite of passage for Latter-day Saints — and has been since the church’s founding in 1830.
The church’s missionaries have traveled the world, growing their faith from a fledgling start-up in upstate New York to a global religion that brings in billions of dollars in revenue .
Church leaders say it is men’s responsibility to become missionaries for two years starting at age 18. Missionary work is optional for women, who serve for 18 months. The church has historically encouraged women to focus on marriage and motherhood. But since 2012, when the church lowered the age women could become missionaries to 19 from 21, more women have been going .
Missionaries leave their families and friends, learn new languages and spend the first years of their adulthood spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.
While on a mission, they cannot date and must follow the religion’s ban on premarital sex, drinking, smoking, coffee and caffeinated tea. Communication with friends and family back home is restricted. They commit to stay focused on their work, and their proximity to their missionary partner creates a sense of accountability that keeps most from breaking the rules.
Until recently, the experience of young missionaries was similar to that of their parents. They first attended a missionary training center — a religious boot camp of sorts — before then traveling to their missions.
Most missionaries now start their training online at home , where the transition is less jarring. They can adapt to a mission schedule with their family’s support. Being home is also an opportunity for new missionaries to evangelize in their community.
“I’ve had friends who aren’t members of the church,” Tanner Bird, a 19-year-old missionary in Brazil who did part of his training at home in Houston. “And I just get super, super excited and talk to them about the gospel.”
Once deployed, men in some areas are allowed to wear blue shirts and go without ties , while women can wear wrinkle-resistant dress pants in “conservative colors.” Most missionaries now have smartphones and call their families weekly.
Some traditions remain: Young missionaries still do not get to pick their destinations. Many teenagers throw parties to open their assignments, reading their “call letter” aloud for the first time in front of family and friends. Others film elaborate announcement videos — including on ice skates . Some serve close to home (there are 10 missions in Utah). Others go as far as Tahiti or Tokyo.
Mr. Gonzalez, the missionary in Los Angeles, said he first imagined going on a mission when he was a child in Venezuela. His parents, who converted to the faith, often had young missionaries over for meals. After the church helped the family settle in Utah, he said serving as a missionary was part of his “American dream.”
Every morning, he wakes up at 6:30 a.m., the set time for many missionaries, with his “companion,” an assigned missionary partner. They are mandated to “never be alone,” with few exceptions, and each day follow a missionary schedule .
On Facebook, they contact people they have met, including those they have approached on the street in downtown Los Angeles. They also search groups for people who may be open to their message and post videos to generate interest in their faith. They keep track of potential converts’ progress, including lessons they teach. Every Monday, Mr. Gonzalez calls his parents.
Calls are also an opportunity for him to receive support. “It’s a little bit hard,” Mr. Gonzalez said of his mission work, describing people in downtown Los Angeles as “busy.” Still, he remains hopeful: “Some of them, they really are ready. They make time, even just like five minutes.”
The missionary experience is not for everyone. Some people feel isolated, find it difficult to adapt to a location, or struggle with the rules or the pressure to keep their commitment. Some people do leave early; the church does not comment on those who do.
Alex McAlpin, a 23-year-old who went on a mission to Denver, almost did not put in a missionary application. Before her mission, she attended Pepperdine University, where she wrestled with some aspects of church doctrine and history.
Then the church made its dress code change, allowing women to wear pants in 2018.
“That was the first day of my life that I thought maybe I would go” on a mission, Ms. McAlpin said. She saw the new dress code and the church’s other mission changes as a sign the church was evolving and listening to its younger members, many of whom hope their church will modernize in larger ways. “I wanted to be a part of the change.”

DJENNE, Mali (AP) — Thousands of Malians carrying buckets and jugs of mud joined the annual replastering of the world’s largest mud-brick building this weekend, a key ritual that maintains the integrity of the Great Mosque of Djenne in the center of the country.
The building has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage in Danger list since 2016. The mosque and surrounding town, a historical center of Islamic learning, have been threatened by conflict between Islamist rebels, government forces and other groups.
Djenne’s mosque requires a new layer of mud each year before the rainy season starts in June, or the building will fall into disrepair. The replastering event once drew tens of thousands of tourists each year. As with the rest of Mali, Djenne’s tourism industry has all but completely disappeared.
“The plastering of the mosque is a symbol of peace. The poor, the rich, everyone is here for this activity.” Amadou Ampate Cisse, a Djenne resident taking part in the event, told The Associated Press: “We will continue this tradition from generation to generation. We will pass it on to our children and they in turn will do the same.”
Traditionally, women and girls fetch water from the nearby river to mix with clay to make the mud, and men and boys climb the mosque and apply the new layer.
Moussa Moriba Diakité, head of Djenne’s cultural mission, said insecurity has threatened the annual event. “A lot of people talk about insecurity, and we hear that we can’t come to Djenne because there is insecurity,” he said.
Despite the disappearance of Djenne’s tourism industry, the maintenance of the mosque is something that must continue “at any cost,” Diakité said, to preserve the country’s cultural heritage.
Mali, along with its neighbors Burkina Faso and Niger, is battling an insurgency by armed groups, including some allied with al-Qaida and the Islamic State group. Following military coups in all three nations in recent years, the ruling juntas have expelled French forces and turned to Russia’s mercenary units for security assistance.
