Russell Dickerson on How Tim McGraw 'Spews Wisdom' and Stays 'Jacked AF' on Tour (Exclusive)

Russell Dickerson and Tim McGraw

Dickerson is a special guest on the country legend's 'McGraw Tour 2022.'

Russell Dickerson is ready to soak up all of Tim McGraw 's wisdom -- of both the musical and fitness variety. ET spoke with the 34-year-old singer ahead of his time on the road with the country superstar, and Dickerson admitted that he "can't stop thinking about" touring with McGraw this summer.

"He's one of those guys that just spews wisdom. He's done it all, and he's done it all 10 times," Dickerson told ET. "I am the new guy. I'm just starting out. I just had my first headlining tour. I am just getting to the point of being responsible for 20 people on the road [and figuring out how to] handle that. He's had the same guitar player for 30 years, so there's something that he's doing that creates this family-like environment. That's what I love."

While Dickerson jumped at the chance to serve as a special guest on the singer's  McGraw Tour 2022 , he may have underestimated the off-stage expectations that doing so entails.

"He's jacked AF. He is like, 'All right, every day, buddy, I want to see you there. We got cardio and stretching in the morning. Then we do the stairs, then we're eating lunch, then we got a two-hour CrossFit session,'" Dickerson said of McGraw, 54. "I'm like, 'Holy lord, what did I just commit to?' I thought I was just playing for 50 minutes."

Even with the grueling workouts, Dickerson is sure that the tour will be "the best summer of my life."

"The fans are going to be together. We're going to be in so many cool cities. It's going to be early summer. The weather's going to be beautiful. I'm freaking out," he said, before teasing what fans can expect from his time onstage.

"I want to do something fresh and different because Tim McGraw's such a classic act. And so I'm like, 'How do we show them that in 25 years I'll be right here still doing that same thing?' That's kind of what we're going for," Dickerson said. "My show has so many facets... If we're playing a big festival, we lean into the more kind of dance party, party vibe. With this, I feel like I can kind of slow down a little bit, tell some stories, and really just take my time with these fans."

McGraw Tour 2022  doesn't kick off until April, but Dickerson has plenty to keep him busy until then, namely closing out the U.S. leg of his  All Yours, All Night Tour  with a sold-out show at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on March 25.

"This is like the best welcome home," he said of the massive gig. "... We get to sell out the Ryman, end the tour there, it's a big celebratory night for sure... There are a couple little surprises up my sleeve."

Looking back on the 11-stop tour elicits happy memories for Dickerson, including getting to go through it all with his opening act, Breland .

"I feel like we got in on the early end with this kid. I was listening to his EP all during quarantine, and that whole EP is just bomb," Dickerson said of the 26-year-old singer. "... It's been so fun. He's the most down to earth, sweet, humble [guy]. The kid is an incredible, senior writer, musician, performer. It's just been an absolute pleasure getting to know him and his band and crew. It honestly has been. He's blown me away with his talent and his humility."

As for Dickerson's time onstage during his first headlining tour, one moment stands out among the rest.

"There's a moment in Pittsburgh where I just remember the crowd singing every word to my song, 'Southern Symphony,' which isn't a single. It hasn't been on the radio or XM or anything. People are here because they love this music and this album," he recalled of the January show. "After I played that song, I just sat there and started getting teary. I started tearing up because they were just there for these songs. I opened for a bunch of huge stars and have played big festivals for 30,000 people, but nothing hits me the way that that did. I'll just never forget that."

In addition to those unforgettable moments onstage, Dickerson said that bringing his wife, Kailey, and their 1-year-old son, Remington, on tour was a dream fulfilled.

"That's always been the dream. That's how I convinced my wife to marry me. She was like, 'I know who you're going to be, I know what you're going to do.' And I'm like, 'Yeah, but I want my family to be with me,'" Dickerson said. "Having him on the road has been amazing. Just him, running around sound check with his headphones on. He's got drumsticks, and he is just playing everything with the drumstick. That's the dream. We get to stay together. I don't have to miss my family. It's a sacrifice -- it's a financial sacrifice, it's a time sacrifice -- on the road, but I wouldn't change it."

Even will all of his touring, Dickerson hasn't forgotten about fans' readiness for his next album.

"The next month of my life is completely dedicated to album three," he assured them. "[I'll have] a few more songwriting sessions, and then we sit down in the studio and figure out which songs to record, and then we go in the next week and record them. It's getting real."

"I'm really excited about album three. I feel like I've stepped into a new realm of storytelling," Dickerson added. "I'm known as the love song guy, but also the crazy, for the all over the place, dance party, live show thing. We still have that for sure, but I'm a dad now, so I've got stories to tell about that. I've grown in my marriage, and I've got stories to tell about that. There's that element of depth to this album on the way, but there's also just the straight bangers. It's going to be a nice mixture."

While fans eagerly await Dickerson's new music, he encourages them to come to a show and experience his tracks live.

"That's where I love connecting. Come to a meet and greet. I want to meet you. I want to hang out. I want to get to know you, because that's who I do it for," he tells them. "I do it for you guys."

Russell Dickerson Opens Up About Touring With Tim McGraw And New Music: “The Album Is Done”

russell dickerson tim mcgraw tour

Russell Dickerson is an unstoppable force to be reckoned with, as he is slated to end 2022 with a bang.

The “ Blue Tacoma ” singer recently wrapped up his nationwide run with country sensation Tim McGraw and is now gearing up for his 10-stop headlining trek. Ahead of his high-energy set at Windy City Smokeout, the chart-topping artist sipped on a chilled tequila soda while discussing his flourishing music career with CMT.

Dickerson was expected to join McGraw on his Here on Earth Tour in 2020, until the Coronavirus pandemic brought live music to a sudden halt. The Tennessee native persevered forward and channeled his energy into other projects, thinking the gig was ancient history…till his phone rang.

“My God, when we got the call, it was unexpected. I thought it [McGraw’s tour] was just done,” Dickerson admitted. “I thought there was no chance, then BOOM, Tim McGraw. I was like, ‘one hundred percent. I’ll cancel my entire life.’”

Dickerson served as direct support for McGraw and kicked off the highly anticipated tour in late April and wrapped in early June. The singer said the experience was “surreal,” and their friendship blossomed. Dickerson explained that if an opener wants to spend time with McGraw, they should lace up their running shoes and partake in his parking lot bootcamp.

“He wakes up, does cardio, stretches, and then a few hours later does another. Then we do our hour-long group workout. That’s his third workout of the day - it’s next level,” he shared while laughing. “We had a lot of media and radio stuff we had to do. He would be like, ‘where the hell were you yesterday…busy?’ and I was like, ‘dude I’m trying to build my career here. You’re just flying off into the sunset and working out eight hours a day.”

Dickerson continued, “If you want to hang out with Tim McGraw, you got to work out with him. He doesn’t like sitting around. He’s always doing something. That’s a little knowledge for the future openers.”

The 55-year-old hitmaker swears by his fitness program, to the extent that he brings along a gym on wheels. The heavy gear is stored away in a trailer sponsored by Butcher Box. Dickerson and McGraw pull out the weighted ropes, sleds, tires, and even sledgehammers to maintain their healthy lifestyle and lean physique.

Although Dickerson jumped on board with the rigorous regimen, the singer-songwriter confessed that he can’t get into the “ Yellowstone ” sequel  “ 1883 .” The Paramount+ series stars McGraw (James Dutton) and Faith Hill (Margaret Dutton). The action-packed show follows the family as they make the treacherous journey from Texas to Montana. McGraw and Hill’s characters are the great-grandparents of Kevin Costner’s cantankerous John Dutton, who owns the largest cattle ranch in the United States.

Despite their tight-knit relationship and hours spent together, Dickerson said that McGraw still believes he watched the entire fan-favorite television show.

“Honestly, I watched the first five minutes of ‘ 1883 ,’ and it was so intense,” Dickerson said before addressing the country legend turned Hollywood star. “Hi Tim…It’s me. I didn’t watch ‘1883,’ I’m sorry,” Dickerson declared.

While tirelessly keeping up with McGraw and his shenanigans, Dickerson was honing in on his third studio album. The country mainstay believes that the forthcoming record will change the trajectory of his artistry and will be his best collection to date.

“I like to speak positivity, and I don’t speak from a cocky place, but this is the album that will change the game,” Dickerson exclusively told CMT in confidence. “Every single song, I just can’t stop listening to. I’m just so happy and proud of each one.”

The country crooner did not confirm an official release date, but said that the 15-song tracklist is complete and will arrive before the “end of the year.”

“The album is done and finalized,” he shared. “My manager thinks it should be a self-titled album. I don’t know what it will be called yet, but that’s pretty badass.”

Dickerson is looking forward to giving fans a sneak peek into the collection with the latest single, “ I Remember ” on the She Likes It Tour . The headlining trek takes the name of his successful collaboration with pop star Jake Scott. The world-renowned performer called in Nashville newcomer Drew Green to join in on the fun. The must-see show will conclude in Denver, Colorado, at the Fillmore Auditorium.

The main goal behind the winter tour is to bring individuals together with the power of music.

“We all got struggles to deal with. I feel like my spot on this earth is to bring happiness, joy, and light with my music,” Dickerson stressed. “My number one passion about this whole thing is the live shows. I want everybody to go to a different place. I want the show to be so good that it feels like a distraction.”

Tim mcgraw tickets, blossom music center | cuyahoga falls, ohio.

Best-selling Country music star Tim McGraw comes to Blossom Music Center on Thursday, May 19th, 2022. Joining McGraw on the road is multi-platinum recording artist Russell Dickerson, who will bring his high-energy show to the stage as the direct support for the McGraw Tour 2022, as well as new Country artists, Alexandra Kay and Brandon Davis. “I was sort of like, alright, I’m getting a year off without realizing it, and maybe I’ll enjoy it,” he said in a statement. “Two weeks into it, I got so antsy, and I’m ready to play a show, so I’m trying to figure out what to do.”

Tim McGraw: McGraw Tour 2022 with Russell Dickerson at Blossom Music Center

Out of a total of 16 albums, McGraw has had 11 consecutive albums to debut at Number 1 on the Billboard albums charts, and from 65 singles, 25 have hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot Country 100 chart, with 3 singles named the number 1 country song of the year (It's Your Love, Just To See You Smile, and Live Like You Were Dying) He has Won 3 Grammy Awards, 14 Academy of Country Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, 10 American Music Awards and 3 People's Choice Awards, and is ranked as one of the top five in all genres of music, his Soul2Soul II tour with Faith Hill became the highest-grossing tour in country music history. In addition to seeing McGraw on the road next year, fans can catch him on their TVs beginning this month as he plays James Dutton in the Paramount Plus television series 1883, a prequel to the hit show, Yellowstone. McGraw can be seen starring alongside wife, Faith Hill and actor, Sam Elliott.

Country singer Russell Dickerson is a native of Nashville, and it’s easy to hear in his natural delivery and earworm melodies that he’s familiar with from the city’s famed Music Row. Dickerson’s efforts in the 2000s went mostly unnoticed until he nabbed a platinum hit with “Yours,” a song about the transformative power of love, in 2017, almost two years after it was originally released. Its success was likely thanks to the wedding website, The Knot, calling it, “everything a first dance song should be.” He capitalized on the momentum, tapping into a country-pop sound that pulls back on the twang in exchange for arena-ready choruses and flourishes of R&B vocal styling.

Russell Dickerson Recalls Sweet Way Tim McGraw Invited Him on Tour [EXCLUSIVE]

russell dickerson tim mcgraw tour

Russell Dickerson is currently headlining his All Yours, All Night Tour , a dream come true for the Tennessee native. But after that tour wraps, he is happily returning to being an opening act, this time for his own musical idol, Tim McGraw , on the upcoming McGraw Tour 2022 .

“I will happily open for Tim McGraw any day of the year,” Dickerson tells Everything Nash .

Perhaps surprisingly, it was McGraw himself who personally extended the invitation to Dickerson to join him on the road.

“He literally — on my phone, it said like ‘Unknown Caller,’ or ‘No Caller ID,'” Dickerson recalls. “And I’m like, ‘What’s up?’ And he said, ‘Hey, it’s McGraw.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, there’s only one McGraw.’ He said, ‘Man, I just wanted to personally invite you on tour with me.’ And  I literally, my one dream tour, my one bucket list tour is Tim McGraw. If there’s one country artist that I’ve listened to the most hours of, it’s Tim McGraw.”

Dickerson is a diehard McGraw fan. In fact, when asked what his favorite song from the country music hitmaker is, Dickerson chose one that wasn’t even released as a single.

“It’s called ‘Seventeen,'” Dickerson shares. “I listen to that song so much that I thought it was just like a massive hit. but turns out it was not. Not many people know that song, but it’s ‘Seventeen.’ That’s literally one of my favorite Tim McGraw songs ever that, and then ‘She’s My Kind of Rain.'”

Chances are, most nights McGraw is performing, Dickerson will be happily soaking it all in from the side of the stage. But for now, the father of one is happy to be on his own tour, which is a culmination of what Dickerson has been working towards since “Yours” was released in 2015.

“This is the moment I’ve been waiting for in my career, to have my own headlining tour,” Dickerson tells  Everything Nash . “I love opening up for people. I love opening for  Thomas Rhett  and  Florida Georgia Line  and all that stuff, but it’s like, this is  my  show. I get to do whatever I want. I get to play as long as I want. And I feel like this is my moment to shine. That freedom is where I shine. I can bust into an old song or a brand-new song, or a James Taylor song or anything. It’s my night. I can do whatever I want. And I’ve been waiting for that freedom for so long.”
