Troubleshooting, how to save webpage as pdf using safari on iphone & ipad.

How to Save Webpage as PDF Using Safari on iPhone & iPad

Are you looking to save a webpage or multiple webpages as PDF files to your iPhone or iPad? There are many reasons you might want to do this, perhaps you’re wishing to save a webpage receipt as a PDF for record keeping, to archive a page, or to access a web page offline. Fortunately, Safari makes it easy to convert webpages into PDF files.

The ability to create PDF from webpages in Safari was first introduced with the release of iOS 11. However, the steps needed to access the same has been slightly tweaked if you’re running a newer version of iOS like iOS 15, iOS 14, and iOS 13. The advantage of having PDF files of webpages is that they can be viewed even when you’re not connected to the internet and they can also be easily printed out. Plus, you can share it with your colleagues along with other files. So let’s check out creating a PDF from a webpage by using Safari on iPhone or iPad.

How to Save Webpage as PDF with Safari on iPhone & iPad

The following steps are applicable if your iPhone or iPad is running iOS 13/iPadOS 13 or later. On the other hand, if your device is running an older software version, you can follow this method instead .

How to Save Webpage as PDF Using Safari on iPhone & iPad

That’s all you needed to do. You’ve successfully saved the current webpage as a PDF file on your iOS/iPadOS device.

The “Save to Files” option will only show up in the share sheet if you’ve selected the PDF format from the Options menu. This setting will be reset once you exit the share sheet. So, if you’re looking to save multiple webpages, you’ll need to repeat the above steps for each one of them.

If you’ve saved the PDF file in an iCloud Drive directory, it’s worth pointing out that the file will be accessible from all your other Apple devices as well, provided you’re signed into them with the same Apple account.

The saved webpage can then be shared as a file from the Files app instead of a webpage, which can then be viewed even offline by the recipient. The PDF file will follow the format of “Safari – (Date of Creation) – (Time of Creation).pdf”, but you can easily rename it according to your preference within the Files app .

Keep in mind that if the webpage had ads or other page styling, the downloaded PDF files will also show those ads or page styling. However, if you don’t want that kind of stuff in your saved PDF, you can switch to reader view in Safari and then follow the same steps to save it without any ads, page clutter, or styling elements.

Did you convert any webpage to a PDF file, or save webpages as a PDF file to your iPhone or iPad? What is the purpose you use this feature for? Do you use another approach? Let us know your experiences and thoughts in the comments.

This is really helpful, thank you.

This technique does not work with all webpages. Some webpages do not allow saving or printing.

Whilst this works, 1) It only includes a single page. 2) Margins are blotting out key page content.

I am on Android for the past 4 years but if memory serves me correct you can: expert > print > ping OUT on the print preview > export there > do whatever you want.

Hey, this is really useful! Thanks! I have previously used the method of printing to PDF, then reverse pinch, tap the share box on that one & save. Which works about as well (maybe in all apps that can print), but so very not-obvious.

If you've downloaded a PDF to your iPad, you can open and read the file just by tapping its name. If the PDF is longer or you're having trouble opening it in your iPad's built-in PDF viewer, follow this simple guide for opening PDF files in the Books app.

Which app is best for viewing PDFs on iPad?

  • Use the Books app on your iPad to open and read PDFs.

iPhone Share

  • You can use the Markup tool in the Books app to highlight, mark, sign, and comment on PDF files.

Step 1 Install the Apple Books app if you don't have it.

  • Open the App Store (the blue icon with a white "A" inside).
  • Tap Search (the magnifying glass) at the bottom of the screen.
  • Type apple books into the search bar and tap the Search key.
  • Tap GET or the cloud icon next to "Apple Books" (the orange icon with a white book inside).

Step 2 Navigate to the PDF.

  • If you're using Safari, the Mail app, or the Gmail app, the PDF should open in a basic readable format. You can swipe left or right through the file to flip through the pages. If you just need a quick glance at the file, this could be enough for you. If you need to do more, keep reading!

Step 4 Tap the Share icon icon.

  • Now that the PDF is saved to your library, you can view it at any time by tapping the orange Books icon on your home screen and selecting the file.

Step 7 Swipe right or left through the pages.

  • To view a visual table of contents that lets you quickly switch between pages, tap the PDF once to bring up the toolbar, and then tap the icon of three lines prefaced by three dots near the top-left corner. [2] X Research source
  • To bookmark a page, tap the screen once, and then tap the bookmark icon at the top-right corner.

Step 8 Mark up the PDF.

  • Tap the undo icon (the curved arrow pointing left inside of a circle) at the top to reverse your changes.
  • Tap the back button (the < at the top-left corner) to return to your library. This will save any changes you made in Markup, although you can return to Markup at any point to add or remove markings.

Step 9 Tap the Share icon to share the file with others.

This feature has been available since at least iOS 9. When in Safari/share/Save pdf to iBooks. But iBooks is a prison, so from there you need to email it to yourself, then download the attached pdf to another app. Typical iOS runaround.

How to save a pdf to your iphone or ipad.

It's easy to save a PDF file to your iPhone or iPad for later viewing. Here's how.

While browsing the web, it's common to run into PDF files that you'd like to save to your iPhone or iPad for later viewing. Here's how to do it.

While viewing the PDF file in Safari, tap on the Share button. The Share button is in a different location on an iPhone or an iPad. On an iPhone, it is in the lower-left corner of the screen.

On an iPad, the Share button is located just to the right of the browser's address bar. It always looks like a rounded square with an arrow pointing upwards.

After tapping the Share button, iOS will bring up a list of ways that you can share or save the file, including sending it to others through text message or email.

Swipe down the list with your finger until you find the app you want to open it in.

Many people choose to send a PDF to the built-in Books app for later viewing. Once saved to Books, it is always be available through the Books app.

Some people prefer to save PDFs to Dropbox (i.e, a paid service available in the App Store), so that they can retrieve them on a computer later. If you have Dropbox installed, this will be an option on the list. You can save it to any file storage service you like, including Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive.

iOS also has a way of saving documents outside of a particular app called "Files".

If you'd like to save a PDF to Files, swipe down the list until you see the Files option and tap on it. Then, choose your save location.

Later, in the Files app, you can see the PDF you just downloaded. Or, if you saved the PDF to Books, you can open the Books app and read the PDF there.

It's also possible to save a website as a PDF file for later viewing, which can come in handy.

How to Save a PDF Document From Safari on Your iPad

You're reading a really cool document on your iPad (or other iOS device) you found on the Internet. It's in PDF format, and Safari downloads it, then displays it nicely. But how do you save it for all time? Here's how to save it in your iBooks library. Or other compatible apps.

1. You may not have noticed when the PDF document was downloaded, very briefly, a grey task bar appeared at the top of Safari's display, then disappeared. This is what you need.

safari and pdf on ipad

2. To recover the task bar, tap anywhere in Safari's window, firmly but briefly. If you hold your finger there too long, you'll just get the iOS editing magnifying glass. After a brief tap, you'll see this at the top:

safari and pdf on ipad

3. Tap the button "Open in iBooks". The document will be nicely CBC bound (a nice skeuomorphism) and dropped onto the bookshelf in iBooks. You'll be whisked from Safari to iBooks where you can read it with IBooks controls and keep it forever if need be.

If you already have a collection that you named "PDFs," the document will be placed there. If not, it will be placed in with all your books in a single collection.

safari and pdf on ipad

4. If, instead, you tap "Open In..." you'll be shown an array of apps that can read that document, and then it will be added to that app's document folder and (re)opened. If you want to save it in several places, just go back to Safari and select another app.

When browsing the web, we often come across PDF files. If you’re using Safari you can view such files within the browser itself. But if you want to keep them for later reference, you can also save PDF files from Safari to iPhone, iPad, or Mac. This is different from saving webpages as PDFs which is another handy feature of Safari. Let’s check it out.

How to Save PDF Files from Safari on iPhone or iPad

How to download pdf files from safari on mac.

  • Download PDF Files from a Link in Safari on Mac

Make Safari Download PDF Files Instead of Opening Them

If you want to save PDF from Safari to the Files app on your iPhone, it’s pretty simple. When browsing on Safari on iPhone, if you tap the link to a downloadable file, a dialog box will appear to confirm that you would like to download the file.

Download & Save PDF Files from Safari to iPhone

Once you tap “Download,” the file will be added to the downloads manager and start downloading. It will continue downloading until the entire file is downloaded, even if you close Safari or leave the webpage.

By default, downloaded files are saved to a ‘Downloads’ folders in iCloud Drive so that you can access them from all your devices. But you can change the default location that files are saved in if you wish.

When you click on a link to a PDF file in Safari on Mac, it will automatically open it. To save the PDF file that you’re viewing, click on the “File” menu at the top of the screen and choose “Save As.”

Click on File and Select Save As in Safari on Mac

In the dialog box that opens, name the PDF file and select the destination where you want to keep the PDF file. Then, click “Save.”

Click on Save to Download PDF Files in Safari on Mac

That’s it. Once the file is downloaded, you can view it anytime by opening it from the location where you chose to save it.

How to Download PDF Files from a Link in Safari on Mac

If you want to download a linked PDF file in Safari to the Mac, that works the same as downloading any other linked item in Safari on the Mac:

Right-click on the PDF file link and choose “Download Linked File As”. Then, name the PDF file and save the file to the preferred destination folder.

Download PDF Files from a Link in Safari

A neat download trick for Safari is to  hold down the OPTION key and then click the link to the PDF or refresh the current page if the PDF is already open in Safari.

That will also download the PDF document directly into the preset Downloads folder.

Usually, you will probably end up opening PDF files on Safari when trying to download them. If you want to avoid this and directly save a PDF from Safari on Mac, you can try the following tricks:

  • If it’s a link that is clickable to open the PDF, you can just hold the OPTION/ALT key when clicking the URL to instantly download the PDF to the default download location. This will instantly download the PDF file to your Downloads folder unless you changed the download destination in Safari

The hidden way to print to PDF on iPad and iPhone

david-gewirtz

Although it's possible to lug a tiny printer with you wherever you go, it's not particularly practical. Most of us don't print enough from our phones or tablets for mobile printing to be a consideration. But what if you need to save a printout, and you don't have a printer?

  • How to better organize text messages on your iPhone, thanks to iOS 17
  • How to transfer data from Android to an iPhone: 2 simple and fast ways
  • How to turn on 80% charging limit on the iPhone 15 to save battery health
  • How to leave a FaceTime voice or video message when your call goes unanswered

For example, let's say you've completed a financial transaction, and you have the option to print the receipt. Many sites that offer a print option don't offer any sort of Save to PDF function. If you're on a PC or Mac, that's a relatively easy option to find.

But if you're on an iPad or an iPhone, all iPadOS or iOS presents to you is the Print button. As we've established, that Print button is less than useful when you don't have a printer.

Fortunately, as long as you're using iOS or iPadOS 15 (or later), there is a way. It's oddly obscure, but it's there.

I'm working on an article about using the iPad as the ultimate coloring book, and I wanted to import a PDF. As it turns out, Crayola (the crayon company) has a bunch of printable coloring book pages. One such page is this NASCAR image. I'm all about fast cars, so I wanted to download it.

But, as you can see, a typical printer dialog box opens up when I hit the Print Now button. In this case, I have no printer selected, but if you click on Printers to select a printer, there's no way to print to a PDF.

The hidden trick

Here's the hidden trick. As I said, you must be running iOS or iPadOS 15 for this to work. Now, rather than just tapping the blue Print prompt, press and hold it. At this point, the hidden share card pops up:

Choose Save to Files. You can save to iCloud or On My iPad. I chose On My iPad and then pointed the file to the folder where I'll be using it. You can save the PDF anywhere you wish.

I have to wonder why this feature is hidden. Why isn't there a share icon? How is someone supposed to know they need to press and hold Print unless they read an article like this?

Did you know about this trick? Have you wanted to be able to do something like this without purchasing and installing an add-on app? Let us know in the comments below.

Can’t Open a PDF in Safari? Here's How to Fix That

There are a few ways to fix Safari if it refuses to open PDFs from the websites you visit. Luckily, every option is quick and easy to follow.

You’ve clicked on a link that should open a PDF in Safari. The link goes through, but you can’t see the PDF—there’s just a gray background.

You can Control-click on the PDF, and your Mac says there’s a PDF there, but you just can’t see it. Refreshing the page doesn’t fix anything, nor does restarting Safari.

I’ve been in this unusual situation before, and I can help you fix it. Read on to see how to view a PDF that Safari won’t open, and how to fix Safari so other PDFs will be visible in the future.

The Quick Fixes

If you can’t see or load a PDF in Safari, one of the easiest fixes is to stop using Safari to try to view the PDF. This means copying the PDF’s URL from Safari and pasting it into another browser, like Chrome or Microsoft Edge ( Edge works very well on Macs , for the record).

If you don’t want to open another browser though, you do have another option.

If you can Control-click on the PDF to download it or click the download button available for the PDF in the Safari window, do so. You can then open and view the PDF in Preview or your preferred PDF-viewing Preview alternative . You can drag the PDF into the Trash if you don’t end up needing it after you read it. And if you do need it in the future, you’ve already downloaded it!

These options work well, but maybe you really just want to be able to open PDFs in Safari. There are ways to do that, too, which we’ll go over in the next section.

How to Get Safari to View PDFs Again

The first place to check when you can’t view PDFs in Safari is your Safari plug-ins or extensions. It’s possible one of them is hiding the PDF from you or affecting Safari in a negative way.

To access your Safari plug-ins or extensions, open Safari > Preferences and then head to the Websites tab. Scroll down the menu on your left, and you should find the Plug-ins or Extensions headings.

Click on any plug-in in this list to see a list of current websites and whether that plug-in is working on the website where you have the PDF open. If it is, set the drop-down menu beside it to Off . Then refresh the PDF, and see if it’s visible.

With extensions, set their drop-down menus to Deny to prevent them from working. Though, if an extension is the root of the problem, it might be worth updating or removing the extension entirely to see if that improves your PDF visibility issues.

But what if you don’t have any plug-ins or extensions in your Safari preferences? Or you’ve demonstrated that they’re not the issue with seeing PDFs in Safari? The problem-causing plug-in might be hidden away in your Mac Library instead.

Specifically, the AdobePDFViewer plug-ins are likely to be the root of your problem. To find these plugins and remove them, so PDFs become visible in Safari again, head to Finder > Go > Go to Folder .

In the search window that appears, type in or copy and paste /Library/Internet Plug-ins . Locate and select all files with AdobePDFViewer in the name in the Internet Plug-Ins Finder window, and drag them into your Trash.

Your Mac may prompt you to input your password or use Touch ID to confirm you want to move these plug-ins. Do whichever you want to ensure those files go into your Trash.

Refresh the Safari window where you’re trying to view a PDF. The PDF should now be visible to you!

Different Safari PDF Visibility Fixes for Different Moments

I was very excited to find several solutions to the invisible PDF problem in Safari, and I hope my findings can help you out too.

Whether you’re happy opening PDFs in non-Safari browsers to save time or are eager to delve into your Mac’s library to improve your workflow in Safari over the long term, the tips above will help you view PDFs online when you need them.

Only first page of PDF showing for files retrieved from website

Safari and Chrome on my iPad and IPhone X (13.4.1) are only displaying the first page of PDFs embedded in a site. Accessing the site using Windows 10 or Android devices result in either a download option for the file or the entire file is opened in browser. This was checked on multiple iOS Devices.

Ios 17.5—apple issues update now warning to all iphone users.

Apple has issued iOS 17.5 along with a warning to update your iPhone as soon as possible. That’s because iOS 17.5 fixes 15 security vulnerabilities, some of which are serious.

Apple remains tight-lipped about exactly what is fixed in iOS 17.5, to ensure as many people as possible are able to upgrade their iPhones before attackers can get hold of the details.

Among the important flaws patched in iOS 17.5 are an issue in the Kernel at the heart of the iPhone operating system tracked as CVE-2024-27818, which could allow an attacker to execute code. Another issue fixed in iOS 17.5, in AppleAVD, could see an adversary able to execute arbitrary code with Kernel privileges if a user downloads an app, Apple said on its support page .

Apple has issued iOS 17.5 along with a warning to update your iPhone as soon as possible.

05/14 update below. This article was first published on 05/13.

Another significant bug squashed in iOS 17.5 is a vulnerability in Voice Control that could allow an attacker to elevate privileges. Meanwhile, CVE-2024-27834 is a flaw in WebKit, the engine that underpins the Safari browser, which could allow an attacker to bypass Pointer Authentication.

An issue in MarketplaceKit tracked as CVE-2024-27852 and reported by researchers at security outfit Mysk could see a maliciously crafted webpage able to distribute a script that tracks users on other webpages.

Ghost Of Tsushima Is Already Flooded With Negative Reviews On Steam

‘this is a big deal’—congress suddenly hurtling toward a ‘crucial’ crypto vote that could blow up the price of bitcoin, ethereum and xrp, netflix s best new overlooked action movie is a must watch.

Sean Wright, head of application security at Featurespace, calls the fixes issued in iOS 17.5 “a mixed bag.”

The worst is the kernel flaw, he says. “This could be chained with some of the other vulnerabilities to allow an attacker to gain full access to the device.”

POC for iOS 17.5 Kernel Flaw Will Soon Be Ready

One day after iOS 17.5 was issued, more is being unveiled about the security fixes. Notably, a security researcher Meysam who claims to have reported the kernel vulnerability has described in a post on X, formally Twitter, how he reported the flaw in iOS 17.4.1—the previous version of iOS 17. He plans to publish a proof of concept to demonstrate how it works “soon.”

While he is keen to point out that this is not an exploit—ie a direct method of exploiting the issue—it does make updating to iOS 17.5 especially crucial. The more attackers know about the flaw, the more likely it is they can use it in attacks.

Apple Issues iOS 16.7.8 To Fix Already-Exploited Issue

Alongside iOS 17.5, Apple has issued iOS 16.7.8, fixing two issues, one of which is already being used in real-life attacks. Tracked as CVE-2024-23296, the flaw in RTKit could enable an attacker with arbitrary kernel read and write capability to bypass kernel memory protections. “Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited,” Apple wrote on its support page .

The iOS 16.7.8 is available for iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPad 5th generation, iPad Pro 9.7-inch, and iPad Pro 12.9-inch 1st generation.

Why You Should Update Now To iOS 17.5 Or iOS 16.7.8

It’s been a while since Apple’s last security update, iOS 17.4.1 —released in March—which fixed multiple serious security flaws. The update before that, iOS 17.4, was an emergency patch for issues being used in real life attacks.

The iOS 16.7.8 update is similar as it also patches already-exploited security issues. If you have an older device, updating to iOS 16.7.8 is a no-brainer, given that the flaw is being used in attacks.

While iOS 17.5 doesn’t cover any already-exploited flaws—at least that we know about—some of the issues are serious making it important you update your iPhone as soon as you can.

At the same time, the iOS 17.5 update contains cool new features, including unwanted tracker protection, as well as bug fixes.

The iOS 17.5 update is available for the iPhone XS and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation and later, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 6th generation and later and iPad mini 5th generation and later.

Two days after iOS 17.5 was released, some users are complaining about a Photos bug that is seeing deleted photos from years ago reappearing on people’s iPhones. This bug is certainly concerning, but it’s likely it will be fixed soon by Apple. I haven’t had any issues since updating to iOS 17.5.

If you care about your security, you will need to apply iOS 17.5 or iOS 16.7.8 manually, because Apple’s automatic updates can take a while to reach iPhones. It’s during this time that your device remains open to attack.

Wright says there is no need to panic, but ensure that you update “as soon as you can.”

So what are you waiting for? Go to your iPhone’s Settings > General > Software Update and download and install iOS 17.5 or iOS 16.7.8 now.

05/14 update: As well as important security fixes, the iOS 17.5 update contains a feature that helps stop unwanted tracking across platforms. Building on Apple’s iPhone feature to detect AirTags that might have been slipped into a bag or placed in a vehicle, the unwanted tracking tool in iOS 17.5 is a result of a partnership between Apple and its rival Google.

After releasing iOS 17.5, Apple has issued a press release to confirm the anti-tracking features are live. It describes how Apple and Google worked together to create an industry specification—Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers—for Bluetooth tracking devices. “This will help mitigate the misuse of devices designed to help keep track of belongings,” the statement reads, adding that Apple is implementing this capability in iOS 17.5, and Google in its Android 6.0+ devices.

The iOS 17.5 feature means users will get an “[Item] Found Moving With You” alert if an unknown Bluetooth tracking device is detected.

It works across platforms, with Bluetooth tag manufacturers including Chipolo, eufy, Jio, Motorola and Pebblebee saying future tags will be compatible.

Among the benefits, it offers instructions and best practices for manufacturers, “should they choose to build unwanted tracking alert capabilities into their products,” according to Apple and Google.

The standard is ongoing: Apple and Google are working with the Internet Engineering Task Force via the Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers working group to develop the official standard.

Update 05/15: Article updated to include details about iOS 17.5 photos bug.
