Things to do in Bali

Sacred Sunsets

Bali is known for its beautiful temples, but the Uluwatu Temple provides incredible sunset backdrops to the cultural display on a steep cliff 70 meters above sea level. Arrive early to put on your sarong, get all the photos in and meet the resident monkeys. Fair warning, they are notorious for stealing sunglasses, shiny jewelry and anything loose and seemingly valuable as ransom for treats. Leave these things in your room or a well secured handbag and enjoy the show as they taunt the less prepared and look super cute while doing it. If you'd prefer to avoid crowds, go earlier in the day. Packing note: shoulders should be covered as a sign of respect when visiting the temple. If you're not staying in Uluwatu, this is an easy jaunt from Jimbaran or approximately 30 minutes from Seminyak — book dinner at one of the gorgeous Uluwatu restaurants after and make a night of it.

Learn to Surf

Bali is home to breaks that reside on many expert bucket-lists, but don't let that scare you. Beginners can find lessons and camps at both Padang Padang and Canggu. Just be sure you check in with a school or at least local rental shop to help you navigate the forecast and any known obstacles or rips. Rent a beach chair at Padang for resting after — just BYO if you like to apres surf with an adult beverage.

Uluwatu is the headliner here for sure, and what used to be a spot with one nice hotel and some little shack shops sprinkled down the cliff has grown into a full on destination with amenities galore. Think : vegan restaurants, luxe hotels and beachwear boutiques. The lineup can be fierce with a numbering system, so bring your A-game paddling and etiquette. From hatha and ashtanga to aqua yoga, the Samadi Bali wellness center in Canggu has a wide offering of classes, teacher training, breathwork, sound healing and more. If you're staying close by, be sure to check out one of their market days as well to stock your villa or beach bag — mangosteens are not to be missed! While in Ubud, The Yoga Barn will be your spiritual stop with Ayruvedic rejuvenation packages, meditation, capoeira and more. Looking to let your sound bath soak in a little longer? Cocktail Class

Craft cocktail cravings can be taken to the next level at Akademi in Seminyak. This open-air bar, lab and training center will take you on a deep dive into classic concoctions as well as the local spirits, arak and jamu.

Monkey Business

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud showcases incredible Balinese stone carvings, ancient strangler figs and adorable resident monkeys that are not shy to say the least. Wear comfy shoes and bring a fully charged camera/phone and cash for monkey treats. Again ,it's advisable to leave anything loose and shiny at home or in a secure bag. The little comedians are known to take your Ray Bans or readers as ransom for their treat of choice. Hot tip - bananas are played out! Go for jackfruit or anything else they're selling if you can.

Not far from Ubud is Gianyar Regency, a region historically known for stone and wood carving. If you're dying to take home a masterfully carved balinese daybed or custom console table, this is the place for you. Be sure to bring your driver, negotiating skills and desired measurements! The prices can be amazing, but don't forget to factor in freight and tariffs.

Cooking School

Feed your curiosity about Balinese cuisine by taking a cooking class at the Casa Luna Cooking School in Ubud. This experience will provide incredible insight into Balinese culture and daily life, delving into the food and culinary myths. Classes are part hands-on and part demonstration as you prepare a lavish Balinese feast to enjoy with homemade hibiscus tea.

Places to Eat & Drink in Bali

Mana Uluwatu : Panoramic views paired with a laid-back, but sophisticated setting, offering eclectic breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their onsite pool is open to outside guests, as the perfect spot for cold coconuts, cocktails and fresh fare. Jimbaran Bay: Have fresh-as-can-be grilled lobster and seafood with your toes in the sand at this super casual spot on the beach. Breeze at The Samaya : Gorgeous mainstay, an oasis in the thick of it all in Seminyak. I recommend candlelight dinner via reservation to ensure a beachfront table. Revolver Espresso : Get your caffeine fix, try their elevated avocado smash and take a stroll around the legendary Oberoi afterward. Soak up the hip vibe and start your day off right. Ku De Ta : This longstanding seaside lounge is a place to see and be seen in Seminyak while soaking up the sunset and spotlit sets rolling in. Stay for dinner if you like and checkout their radio streaming if you want to take the vibe home with you. Waroeng Tugu: Be sure to make a reservation for this taste of old world Javanese and Balinese dining. This experience in Canggu offers a peek into daily living, steeped in flavor and tradition. Chef chooses the menu, so bring an adventurous palate. Authentic Balinese Meal: If you were ever an Anthony Bourdain fan, you've no doubt heard of the beloved Ibu Oka. This longstanding institution continues to live up to the hype as one of the very best places on the island to have babi gulung, the famed Balinese style roast pig. A stones throw from the Royal Palace, this casual spot offers floor seating or picnic style tables to enjoy the delectable meat on paper plates. Parq Space Ubud : Need to get in some ultra remote work or networking? This hip community space offers up not only a restaurant, but co-working desks, private offices, fitness center and events to boot. Essential Things to Do in Padang in Western Sumatra – High Time to Visit This Underrated Indonesian Gem

The name Sumatra often brings to mind images of exotic wildlife as well as gourmet coffee beans. As the largest island that entirely belongs to Indonesia, it’s also one of the less commonly explored – especially when you consider the myriad of attractions found there. The Western Sumatran capital of Padang for instance, does not receive many overseas visitors. The trickle who come would take the quickest boat to the Mentawai Islands rather than spend a couple of days in Padang. The fact that Padang is not a buzzing or up-and-coming destination certainly adds to its charms. For the most part, you’ll find yourself to be the only foreigner in a town that Indonesians have long been in-the-know about – and for good reason, too. Here are the things you can do when you visit Padang, Indonesia.

Marvel at the colonial architecture at the old town of Padang

Padang is one of the older colonial settlements in the island of Sumatra and in its old town, you can still find some fine examples of Dutch architecture – many which have survived the countless earthquakes that have wreaked havoc on the city. The old town of Padang is generally recognized as that area north of the Muaro river along Jalan Kelenteng II, Jalan Ps. Borong III and Jalan Batang Arau. It seems that gentrification has not caught on that much in Padang yet. In other cities, such charming old buildings could have easily been turned into cafes, art galleries or independent shops. In Padang, most of these buildings are abandoned save for the likes of Weekend Cafe (Jalan Kelenteng II, #1, open daily 11:30AM to 11PM), a “safe” brunch place that many travelers in town go to for its chic interiors and milder versions of local dishes.

Gedung Padangsche Spaarbank

One such heritage building is the Gedung Padangsche Spaarbank. As suggested by its name, the building used to be a bank during the Dutch occupation of Indonesia. This particular structure dates back from 1908 and at various times, have also been used for a different bank and also as a hotel. Its most recent use was as Hotel Batang Araw which existed in the early 2000s until 2009 when the great earthquake struck.

Gedung Geo Wehry & Co

This building is hard to miss especially if you are walking towards Sitting Nurbaya bridge. The structure used to house the local office of Geo Wehry and Co. The company used to be active in trading various commodities during the period of the Dutch East Indies. For the longest time, it is being used as a warehouse for an Indonesian company. Entrance is forbidden without permission but the real highlight is the frontage. If you look closely beneath all the stains, you can still make out the logo of the Geo Wehry & Co.

Sitti Nurbaya Bridge

The 156 meter long Sitti Nurbaya bridge is often touted as one of the most romantic spots in Padang. It is a bit of a stretch however. Sure, the view towards the river and the hillside houses provide for a bit of atmosphere but the unsightly garbage being dumped on the river quickly dissipated any mood build up, in my view.

Still, locals who are dating commonly visit this place, owing to its supposed origins in Indonesia’s own Romeo & Juliet story. You will find hawkers lining the sidewalk and locals parking their cars on the side to get out and take photos, especially during sunset.

See Hin Kiong Temple

Originally dating back to 1841, the See Hin Kiong Temple is Padang’s old town serves as the oldest temple in Padang. The structure itself has had 3 different incarnations. The original one burned down in 1861 and was rebuilt. The second version was destroyed during the great 2009 earthquake. The structure that stands now, with its elaborate carvings, was built recently and was designed by architects from China.

Gunuang Padang

You can see this place from afar, especially if you are situated in a high building. Padang’s own version of the “Hollywood” sign is displayed blatantly on a hill on a cape. Those who climb up the hill are rewarded with a view of Padang’s coastal areas. This is also said to the be place where Sitti Nurabaya’s (the lady involved in Indonesia’s own Romeo & Juliet story) tomb is situated. 

Go cafe-hopping for Sumatra coffee

What’s a trip to Sumatra without a taste of the local coffee? As Padang is located in an island that serves as one of the world’s top coffee producers, there is no shortage of cafes in Padang. These hipster cafes provide for a great place to relax especially after one explores Padang’s often grubby streets. Great options include Pavilon Coffee (Jl Hayam Wuruk 20A, open daily 2pm to 10:30pm) and KiosK (Jl Tepi Pasak, 40-42, open daily 11am to 10pm). If you go to the latter, make sure to try their delicious fried noodles as well.

Adityawarman Museum

If you are looking for traditional Minangkabau architecture without heading out of Padang’s city limits, then Adityawarman Museum is your best bet. You will find plenty of exhibits there about local culture, and even local wildlife. If you’re feeling all touristy, you can also rent local Minangkabau attire for a photoshoot. But what I found most fascinating is the showcase/miniatures of various Minangkabau architectural styles found throughout the island and even the influence it has had on Malaysia’s Negeri Sembilan state.

Grand Mosque of Western Sumatra

Featuring a contemporary take on Minangkabau architecture, The Grand Mosque of Western Sumatra opened in 2014 to great fanfare. It is the second largest mosque in Sumatra and the largest in the region. The main prayer hall inside, which can accommodate 20,000 people, is an instagrammer’s dream with its Moorish patterns.

Daytrips & Excursions to Batusangkar and Bukittinggi

• Bukittinggi – This hill is a popular holiday spot for locals due to its cooler climate. Activities here are more kids-oriented though you can also spot some heritage structures in the form of Jam Padang (colonial clock tower) and the Sianok Canyon .
• Padangpanjang – An easy day trip for Padang, Padangpanjang houses one of the finest Minangkabau buildings in my view. I had a bit of difficulty locating it but the  Minangkabau Information and Documentation Centre is highly recommended if you still haven’t had enough of the local architecture. While here, also check out the  Asasi Nagari Gunung Mosque with its ornate wall carvings.
• Batusangkar – The town of Batusangkar is the former Minangkabau royal capital and is a good 3.5 hour journey from Padang. While here, check out the massive Pagaruyung Palace and visit local villages.

Getting Around

You won’t have problems getting around town with a ride-sharing app such as Grab. This allows you to pay local prices. I found most rides within town to cost roughly US$1 to US$2. Even rides out to/from the Minangkabau International Airport to Padang’s city center roughly cost around US$6 to US$8 by Grab.  For trips farther afield, I found my ride by asking one of my Grab drivers if they wanted to do customized trips. Many are happy to do so!

Where to Stay in Padang

In choosing where to stay in Padang, my main criterion was that it had to be earthquake-proof. During the great 2009 earthquake, many buildings in the city were destroyed including some notable hotels. The Ibis Padang proudly displays its earthquake-proof technology, with the usage of rubber shock absorbers in case one hits. Incidentally, it is also the tallest building in Padang. Rooms are similar with Ibis hotels one finds elsewhere. The restaurant at the top floor has great views of the city.

How to get to Padang Padang Beach

Padang Padang Beach is located along Jalan Labuan Sait in Pecatu village. The village lies in the South Kuta District of the Badung Regency , just a 10-minute drive from the main Uluwatu area. It is only a half-hour drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport , making it a great first stop on your Bali vacation. The beach can also be reached in one to one and a half hours from the popular tourist hubs of Seminyak , Kuta , and Canggu . One of the most common ways of getting around Bali is on a scooter, which you can rent from any of the main tourist locales for as little as 50,000 IDR per day. You can also rent a car or hire a car and a driver to take you around.

Once you reach Padang Padang Beach , you can park or get dropped off in the parking area. Across the road, you will find a staircase that leads down to the beach from the top of the cliffs, taking you through a limestone cave. Make sure to mind any loose belongings on the way down, as there are mischievous monkeys around that love to snatch hats and purses!

There is an entrance gate at the top of the stairs which lead down to Padang Padang Beach where you will have to pay a small entrance fee in order to continue. The fee is only 15,000 IDR per adult and 10,000 IDR per child (three to 10 years of age). Payment must be made in cash, so make sure you have some on you. You will also need to pay a parking fee of 2,000 IDR for a scooter or 5,000 IDR for a car. All in all, a visit to Padang Padang Beach is very inexpensive.

Like any beach in Bali , Padang Padang Beach becomes busier and more crowded during the middle of the day. This is when everyone wants to cool off in the water and when the tourist buses start coming around. You can beat the crowds by arriving during the mid-morning after the sun is up and shining on the peninsula. The crowds also begin to thin out during the late afternoon and evening, which is also a fantastic time to come and watch the sunset.

As Bali is a year-round tourist destination, Padang Padang Beach has no off-season. April through October are generally the driest months of the year and so the safest for beach-going weather, though any season can be an excellent time to visit as long as the sun is out on the day you go.

Things to do at Padang Padang Beach

There is no shortage of things to do at Padang Padang Beach . Whether you are looking to relax and lounge in the sun or you’d prefer a bit of excitement, you can take your pick from a range of activities. It’s easy to spend a full day trying everything that this beach has to offer.

The clear and calm waters at Padang Padang Beach are ideal for swimming. There are no strong currents and only gentle waves near the beach. You can enjoy just floating in the warm water or you can set out for a longer swim. If you head towards the left side of the beach, there are a number of small caves you can swim into and check out on foot.

Exploring at low tide

During periods of low tide, Padang Padang Beach is a lovely place to explore on foot. The majestic limestone cliffs are more exposed, revealing beautiful rock formations that offer plenty of fantastic photo opportunities, or you can simply enjoy the views while stretching your legs. Many visitors like to bring a book and find a more secluded spot to read for a while.

Food & drink

Among the numerous vendors at the beach, there are also many warungs where you can grab a bite to eat. Warungs are small, family-owned restaurants or cafes. The warungs at Padang Padang Beach sell all manner of food and drink to keep you going throughout the day, including fresh seafood, coconut water, beer, and a variety of local dishes. Enjoy a filling and tasty meal for as little as 50,000 to 75,000 IDR.

Out past the calm waters at the beach, Padang Padang Beach has fantastic surf breaks that hold their own against Bali ‘s most famous surfing spots. In fact, the beach regularly hosts international surfing events. There is both a left-hand and a right-hand wave available to choose from. The left-hand wave is often referred to as the “Balinese Pipeline” for its resemblance to the legendary Pipeline break in Hawaii. It is recommended for experienced surfers as it breaks over a jagged reef. The right-hand wave, on the other hand, is a beach break perfect for new and intermediate surfers. During high tide, the long and unbroken wave provides a great opportunity to practice.

Surfboard rentals are easy to come by and often go for around 100,000 to 150,000 IDR or two hours. You can also easily find a local willing to give a surfing lesson. The dry season is typically the best time for surfing at Padang Padang Beach , though months closer to the wet season are also a good choice for smaller crowds.

Every Saturday night, Padang Padang Beach becomes one of the hottest spots in Bali with the Ground A Sound party. This weekly event, put on by the Padang-Padang Cafe , transforms the beach into an outdoor nightclub and is definitely worth checking out if you are staying in the area. It is a great way to meet locals and other travelers. Though there is no sign of it during the week, a stage complete with neon lights and large speakers is set up right on the beach on Saturday evening. When the party starts, a live band or DJ takes to the stage to play funky beats that get the crowd dancing. The party usually gets underway at around 9 p.m. and runs until midnight. It is free to attend, and the drinks are cheap as well. Come dance the night away under the stars.

Puncak Bukit Mongkrang, Tujuan Pendakian Favorit yang Pas untuk Pemula

KOMPAS.com - Salah satu aktivitas yang bisa dilakukan saat libur sekolah adalah melakukan pendakian.

Bagi masyarakat Soloraya atau Magetan dan sekitarnya, ada satu tempat tujuan pendakian yang kini jadi favorit.

Bukit Mongkrang adalah tempatnya. Lokasinya adalah di kawasan perbukitan sebelah selatan Gunung Lawu.

Mendaki Bukit Mongkrang bisa dilakukan dari Lapangan Tlogo Dringo, Kecamatan Tawangmangu, Kabupaten Karanganyar, Jawa Tengah.

Bukit ini sebenarnya sudah ramai didaki sejak 2019. Namun, dulu kebanyakan pendaki hanya sampai Bukit Candi, bukan puncak tertinggi Bukit Mongkrang dengan ketinggian 2.194 meter di atas permukaan laut (mdpl).

Pendakian ke Puncak Bukit Mongkrang

Belakangan ini, Puncak Bukit Mongkrang ramai dikunjungi pendaki karena foto dan videonya yang viral di media sosial.

Kompas.com sempat menjajal sendiri mendaki sampai ke Puncak Bukit Mongkrang pada Senin (27/5/2024).

Saya pun merasakan sendiri kenapa Bukit Mongkrang ini pas bagi pemula, termasuk sampa ke puncak tertinggi, yakni sebagai berikut:

1. Jarak tempuh tidak terlalu jauh

Alasan pertama adalah, menuju puncak tidak terlalu jauh dan lama. Saya hanya butuh waktu 1 jam 45 menit untuk sampai puncak.

Dengan begitu, pendaki tidak perlu membawa perbekalan yang banyak dan tenda karena bisa tektok alias mendaki tanpa berkemah. Bahkan, terdapat warung makan sampai sebelum Bukit Candi.

Saya bertemu dengan banyak pendaki yang tidak membawa bekal. Bahkan, hanya air mineral botol tanggung.

2. Jalurnya nyaman dilalui

Alasan selanjutnya, jalur pendakiannya cukup nyaman untuk dilalui. Saat ini, pengelola sudah memperbaiki jalurnya, sehingga tidak terlalu menanjak.

Jalur dibuat agak memutar, sehingga lebih landai dan aman dilalui. Sudah tidak ada lagi titik tanjakan terjal jelang puncak Bukit Candi 1 dan menuju Puncak Mongkrang.

3. Panorama indah

Dari Bukit Mongkrang, pendaki bisa menyaksikan panorama indah ke sisi utara, terutama Gunung Lawu yang menjulang tinggi.

Sementara itu di Puncak Mongkrang, pendaki bisa berfoto di tengah jalur dengan padang rumputnya, berlatar belakang Gunung Lawu.

4. Harga tiket murah

Harga tiket pendakian Bukit Mongkrang juga cukup terjangkau, sehingga pas bagi para pendaki pemula, terutama pelajar dan mahasiswa.

Pendaki hanya perlu membayar Rp 10.000 jika mendaki tektok atau tidak berkemah, dan Rp 20.000 jika berkemah.
