Interview with Serena Ryder: Music as Medicine

serena ryder tour opening act

Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist Serena Ryder made a tour stop in Atlanta at the famed Tabernacle last Friday evening opening for Michael Franti. Sitting in her dressing room prior to hitting the stage, Ryder chatted with us about her life as a musician, and reflected on what inspired her, challenges she faced along the way, and her fabulous new album Harmony.

Ryder has risen to fame in Canada with four prestigious Juno Awards that include: 2008 New Artist of The Year, 2009 Adult Alternative Album of The Year ( Is It O.K. ), 2010 Video of The Year (“Little Bit of Red”), and 2013 Adult Alternative Album of The Year ( Harmony).

Her latest album, Harmony, was produced by Jerrod Bettis (Gavin Degraw, Better Than Ezra) and Jon Levine (K’naan, Nelly Furtado), and mixed by Joe Zook (Katy Perry).  “Stompa” is the lead single on the album and has received double platinum certification and “What I Wouldn’t Do” is quickly rising up the charts, as well. Not only has Ryder performed her hit single “Stompa” on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, she has also received attention from major publications like The New York Times, Esquire and USA Today.

Ryder toured with Melissa Etheridge in 2011 and also performed on stage with her at the Juno Awards that same year. On getting that opportunity, Ryder told us that as fortune would have it, her manager was friends with Etheridge’s manager at the time and Etheridge was planning a Canadian tour and wanted to partner with a local Canadian artist. After hearing Ryder’s song “Broken Heart Sun,” Etheridge wanted to do a duet with her.

Ryder explained, “We had to have something to release leading up to the tour. We literally had not sung the song together in person. I had recorded it a while back and then it was sent to her and she sang the parts in it and sent it back. It was on the radio before the tour! The first time we sang it together was on stage the first night of the tour. It was great! It was awesome to me because I have been compared to her since I was a little kid because I’m a female singer-songwriter with a strong voice and play the guitar, so it was really interesting to actually be with her and to be on the tour bus and we became really, really good friends.”  When we mentioned that Etheridge has referred her to as her “adopted daughter,” Ryder laughed and said, “Yeah…she refers to me as her rock ‘n’ roll offspring!” She added, “the entire experience was phenomenal…we had a great time!”

Ryder comes from a family that she says has “an eclectic musical taste. They just loved good music…and I do, too!” Her father listened to Roger Miller, Culture Club and Wham among other bands, her Mom loved Linda Ronstadt and Rita Coolidge, and her sister was into Michael Jackson and Prince. She said that she never really related to the “stuff that my friends were listening to on the radio at the time like New Kids on The Block, or whatever was popular at the time.” She recalls family road trips where her Dad “would turn on the AM radio or he had mixed tapes that had all kinds of music on them.”

She started singing when she was 8 years old and “just loved singing so much. I would sing songs from the 1940s, ‘50s, and ‘60s. I always loved that era…I could relate to it because that was what my voice sounded like. I had always loved Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Roger Miller and people like that.”

At 13 years old, her Dad bought her a guitar at a yard sale. Ryder laughingly said, “I had been wanting a guitar for about a year and I couldn’t stop talking about it!” She recalls the guitar as a “classical guitar and it had a crazy, thick neck with nylon strings, so my fingers got a really nice workout from the very beginning. I wanted a guitar because I didn’t always want to have to depend on somebody else to play with. I could take the guitar to the park and just play. I started getting obsessed with folk culture and really started getting into Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell. I had all these records from my parents’ collection that I was listening to upstairs in my bedroom. I actually taught myself to play guitar by watching other people playing. One of my favorites was Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” – I played it over and over again in my bedroom.”

Not having any formal guitar or vocal lessons, Ryder was born with natural musical ability. Her mother was a Go-Go dancer/back-up singer/tambourine player for different bands in Canada. Her biological father was a musician who played guitar and drums for a band called The Tradewinds. Her uncle, Bob Carpenter, was a folk musician and singer-songwriter and Ryder proudly said, “He has the most amazing voice and songs. He’s written songs for Tom Rush back in the ‘70s and ‘80s.” So, yes, it’s in her genes!

On her current tour, Ryder is accompanied by her drummer and travels with 5 guitars – 2 electrics and 3 acoustics. Her electrics are her Gibson Flying V and a Silvertone. She said, “I actually own 2 Silvertones…I love them. It’s really more of a sentimental value guitar for me that I love so much because it was left to me by a friend who passed away, Willie Pete Bennett, who was this amazing singer-songwriter folk musician from Canada. His parents gave out his instruments to his really good friends when he passed.” Her acoustic of choice is the Mini Maton which is made in Australia that she’s been playing for the past 9 years. She also uses Orange Amps and just received some exciting news that day that she is now being endorsed by them. “It’s pretty exciting. I just love Orange Amps. I’m going to be playing them at the Grey Cup where I’ll be singing the National Anthem and playing my Gibson Flying V.”

After a warm conversation with Serena, we did a little Q&A during the interview.

GGM:  Your musical inspiration?

Serena: Because of the eclectic mix of music I grew up listening to, I have a wide love for many different styles and I feel like the more years go by and the more I play, the more that I’m able to play around with all of the different styles that I always liked and listened to. You’re always influenced by the people that came before you and I feel like for me, that’s a really big part of my message as an artist is to embrace the influences that you had and to really pay homage to those influences because that’s where you came from. My album Harmony embraces more of the whole of where I am musically now and where I want to go.

GGM:  Your writing process?

Serena:  It’s pretty primal. Right now what I do is start with a guitar riff and I’ll record it and then maybe put some beats on it. Then I’ll just free fall with my voice and make sounds and noises and have fun…like move up and down into different melodies. It doesn’t have anything to do with thinking about what I’m going to write about. I feel like inspiration is one of those things you can’t describe…it just happens and there’s no explanation for it and that’s the magic about it.

Everything starts with an emotion, but when I’m going through something and I want to put it into a song, it doesn’t really work for me. As soon as I start trying to identify an emotion and articulate it through a song, I’m never able to do that. I always think it’s so awesome when people can just experience something or think of a story. But that has happened to me before as I remember one of the first country songs I wrote was after having my first kiss when I was 17 years old. It was called the “Winter Waltz” and it was in the winter time when I started day dreaming about being together forever with this person and making up a story of dancing in a field, and the snow, and dying in each other’s arms…like this whole Romeo and Juliet story.

But my process is constantly changing just like my music is. The difference between my music when I was 13 up until now when I’m 30 is totally life times apart and so is my writing process. And I find that writing with other people changes your process, too.

GGM: On Harmony, did you write with anyone?

Serena: I wrote a few of the songs by myself and I co-wrote the others with the two producers. I wrote all the lyrics, the melody and the guitar riffs, and then they came up with all the music around it and the beats and things that inspired me to bring out the words. “Stompa” was the first song I actually wrote for this record so it laid the entire foundation of the record and the message behind it which is about how music is the best medicine in the world and how it changes lives.

GGM:  Is there any one particular song from the album that you feel special about?

Serena: I go through phases depending on what I’m going through in my life and what’s really important to me and resonates with me…as they all do because they’re all songs that I’ve written from my heart. But right now I’m loving performing “Fall.”  It’s my third single and we just finished a music video for it…it was really fun.

It’s a song about learning how to love yourself first before you try and love somebody else. The whole process of the idea of love and how pop culture has always said ‘finding somebody else’ or ‘your other half’ is going to complete you and all of that BS. You think someone else is your other half and when they’re gone away, you’re incomplete. It was a song in rebellion to that idea…you don’t have to ‘fall’ to fall in love.

GGM:  You talk about songs being medicine and I read about your previous struggles with depression and how you overcame that difficult period in your life. Did you write Harmony as a result of that experience?

Serena: I feel like I wrote this record as a result of sort of everything that I’ve been through in my life. I was able to give myself a fresh new start because as Joni Mitchell said ‘you don’t know what you got till it’s gone.’ When things are taken away from you which is what depression does – it strips everything away from you – yourself away from you. When I got myself back, I was just so excited that I really wanted to enjoy my life and to do what I wanted to do for the right reasons. So this record definitely came out of realizing that I control my life and I control my thoughts. I describe myself the way that I am and I create who I am by my story. So this record kind of gave me an opportunity to write a new story.

GGM:  What advice would you give musicians who are experiencing depression?

Serena: I think the most important thing is to not push yourself. Go a lot easier on yourself. I feel like a lot of people just try to push through things and work through things when they’re actually stretching themselves and it takes a while to get back into your own skin. I think it’s important to talk about it and I think it’s also really important to get some help if you’re experiencing a lot of anxiety and severe depression. Go through some sort of therapy, or get some sort of help, and realize ‘you’ are not the depression…the depression is happening ‘to’ you. A lot of people describe themselves based on how they feel like ‘I am sad,’ ‘I am moody,’ ‘I have anxiety,” and it’s like NO…it’s happening to you! So I feel it’s really important to be aware of what you’re thinking about yourself.

GGM: Do you feel like you’re a role model for young girls out there today that want to play guitar?

Serena: I know that I am because of them reaching out to me which is amazing. Performing and seeing the kids coming up to me after the show is so inspiring to me and I feel really honored about that and humbled. Kids are my favorite audience members…they are the future of our world. The honesty, the openness, and the innocence of children, and their experience with music, is just so inspiring to me.

GGM:  You said the tour was going great. Any memorable moments so far?

Serena: Yeah! I have been performing with Michael every night and at the end of the show he gets me up on stage and it’s one of my favorite times of the night because I get to really let loose. I just jump up and play the tambourine and jump around the stage. He’s got such a great energy to him and really great positive music and audience members. Everyone’s dancing and jumping around and having an awesome time, so that’s really awesome for me.

Also, I just love getting to meet people in the audience after the show. I sign CD’s after performing every night and I get to meet a lot of people. There was one night when we were in Austin and these 3 young boys around the ages of 9 and 10 came up to me. When on stage, I talk about how much music has helped me get through a lot of things and you can use music as your medicine. One of the young boys said, ‘I just want to thank you because you have inspired me to use music as my medicine and I didn’t know you could use music to make you feel better like medicine and I’m going to do that from now on.’ It’s moments like that, that really touch me.

GGM:  You recently collaborated with Demi Lovato and Imagine Dragons for the We Day Celebration. Can you tell us a little about that?

Serena: We Day Celebration is an amazing initiative to inspire kids to do something to change their community and the global community. They sign a contract and agree to do whatever they can – throw a concert or have a bake sale to raise money for whatever they want to do to change their community and the global community, and to let them know they can make a difference. In exchange, they get to attend the We Day concert. The one I played had about 20,000 kids there and it’s pretty inspiring to be in this arena with all these kids that are there because they want to make a difference. The strength and power of that is just so amazing.

GGM:  I know you’ve been extremely busy lately, but are there any new projects on the horizon?

Serena: I have a bunch of stuff that I’m going to be doing. I record a lot with other artists and I sing a lot of different things on people’s records. I have a lot of stuff on the back burner that I can’t really say anything about, but it’s pretty exciting!

GGM:  Coming in 2014?

Serena:  Yes, 2014. A lot of stuff is going to be released and it’s going to be fun.

A few fun questions:

GGM:  First concert ever attended?

Serena: Tragically Hip….they’re an amazing Canadian rock ‘n’ roll band. Big superstars…they’re like Rush.

GGM:  Top 3 songs on your playlist?

“Do I Wanna Know?” by the Arctic Monkeys

“212” by Azealia Banks

“Lean on Me” by Bill Withers – I play it every night with my band before we go on stage!

GGM:  Your dream performance would be with ______?

Serena: Bruce Springsteen.

GGM:  What’s one thing people don’t know about you?

Serena: The only make-up I’ve worn in the last 3 weeks is red lipstick.

GGM:  In one word, can you describe what music means to you?

Serena:  Everything!

After the interview, we stayed for the performance where Ryder performed a set that included “Stompa” with her Gibson Flying V and “Fall” with her Mini Maton acoustic guitar. Ryder definitely got the crowd jumping and dancing and “stomping” their feet!

Serena Ryder, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, mental health advocate (born 8 December 1982 in Millbrook, ON). Folk - rock singer-songwriter Serena Ryder is known for her raspy, soulful vocals and raw, emotional lyrics. She first gained attention with her gold-certified albums If Your Memory Serves You Well (2006) and Is It O.K. (2008). She won the Juno Award for New Artist of the Year in 2008 and achieved international stardom with her fifth album, Harmony (2012), and her smash hit “Stompa,” which went triple platinum in Canada. She has won a Canadian Screen Award , a MuchMusic Video Award, a SOCAN Award and seven Juno Awards, including Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year in 2014. She received the Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour from Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2021.

Serena Ryder

Early Years and Career

Serena Ryder was born into a musical family. Her mother, Barbara, was a go-go dancer and backup singer, and her father played in a Caribbean folk band. Her uncle, part- Ojibwe singer-songwriter Bob Carpenter, worked with producer Brian Ahern and singer Emmylou Harris and recorded the unreleased Silent Passage (1974), which has since become a folk - rock cult classic. Ryder never met her biological father, who was from Trinidad and passed away when she was 11. She credits her stepfather, Andy, for introducing her to jazz and blues music.

Ryder began performing in local coffee houses and Legion halls with her piano teacher when she was eight years old, and started selling self-made recordings at her shows when she was 15. “When I was a little kid I used to be obsessed with just performing wherever I was,” she told CTV in 2017. “I always wanted to be a musician and to play in front of as many people as possible.” By 17, Ryder had left Millbrook for nearby Peterborough and released her debut album, Falling Out (1999), through the independent label Mime Radio.

Unlikely Emergency (2005)

In 2003, musician and producer Hawksley Workman heard Ryder perform on the CBC Radio program Here and Now and signed her to his label, Isadora Records. That same year, she released Serena Ryder: Live , which had six new songs originally recorded for broadcast on CBC Radio’s Bandwidth. She then toured with Workman in Canada and Europe, and eventually opened for Steve Earle in Australia.

Ryder’s first major label record, Unlikely Emergency (2005), was produced by Workman and distributed by EMI Music Canada . Ryder’s raw and honest songs, such as a powerful cover of Etta James’s “At Last” and her own folk-rock ballad “Just Another Day,” earned national attention. In 2005, Ryder also released a live six-song EP recorded in Sydney, Australia, entitled Live in Oz . Five of the six tracks were previously unreleased songs, including “Millbrook Fair,” a duet with Workman.

If Your Memory Serves You Well (2006)

Ryder’s follow-up , If Your Memory Serves You Well (2006), features 12 covers of classic songs by such artists as Leonard Cohen , Paul Anka and Bob Dylan, as well as three original tracks. The album was certified gold in Canada in 2007, and Ryder’s original song “Weak in the Knees” was certified a gold digital download. In its review of the record, American Songwriter described Ryder as timeless, with “a range and vocal maturity of someone twice her age.”

In 2007, Ryder released another EP, Told You in a Whispered Song , which features the title track and acoustic versions of “Hiding Place,” “Brand New Love,” “Weak in the Knees” and “Blown Like the Wind At Night,” which would all appear on her fourth album, Is It O.K. (2008). In April 2008, before the release of Is It O.K. , Ryder won the Juno Award for New Artist of the Year.

Is It O.K. (2008)

Distributed through EMI Music Canada and Atlantic Records in the United States, Is It O.K. went gold in Canada in 2009, when it won the Juno Award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. Ryder’s rock hit “Little Bit of Red” won Video of The Year at the 2010 Juno Awards and the emotional “Weak in the Knees” was certified a gold digital download in 2012.

In 2009, Ryder’s cover of the Bruce Springsteen song “Racing in the Street” was posted on his official website as part of a “Hangin’ Out on E Street” cover series. Ryder’s version had more than 400,000 views on YouTube as of June 2015.

However, Ryder’s hectic tour schedule in support of Is It O.K. contributed to a severe case of depression. She explained in a 2012 interview in Chatelaine magazine that she had struggled with depression since she was 13, and the immense pressure and media spotlight finally took its toll. “When you’re touring, everything is about you,” she said. “You talk about yourself all day. You’re always on. And it’s not even really about you. It’s about an idea of you. So it can get really confusing if you don’t have a super strong sense of who you are inside.”

After suffering severe panic attacks, she abandoned the tour and returned home, where she spent weeks in bed and struggled with suicidal thoughts. She was diagnosed with clinical depression and, through a combination of anti-depressants and therapy, she started to recover and began to write the songs that would appear on Harmony (2012), her next album.

During her recovery, she also toured as the opening act for Melissa Etheridge’s 2011 Canadian tour. The two singers, who have the same manager and became close friends, often sang Ryder’s “Broken Heart Sun” as a duet while on tour, as well as at the 2011 Juno Awards . The song was later released on Ryder’s EP Serena Ryder: Live in 2011. That same year, Ryder and the Toronto alt-country band The Beauties released the four-song EP Serena Ryder & The Beauties , produced by Broken Social Scene member Kevin Drew. The EP has three original songs, a cover of Band of Horses’ “Funeral” and four accompanying music videos available through digital download on iTunes.

Harmony (2012)

Serena Ryder’s 2012 album, Harmony , had its origins in her earlier struggle with depression. After starting treatment for her illness, Ryder’s interest in music was renewed and she wrote more than 60 songs for her forthcoming album. Encouraged by her manager, Ryder went to Los Angeles for co-writing sessions with producer Jerrod Bettis, who ended up co-writing much of Harmony with her. She told the Globe and Mail , “the songs were conversations with myself, telling myself that I wasn’t the depression. I began to understand music in a way I hadn’t understood it before.”

Called “the boldest album of her career” by the Globe and Mail and “the best-produced disc of her career” by the Toronto Star , Harmony expanded Ryder’s folk - rock sound by incorporating pop , blues and soul genres, and was certified platinum in Canada. The album’s first single, the anthemic “Stompa,” became an international hit and was certified a triple platinum digital download in Canada in 2013. Rob Farina, an executive vice-president at Astral Media , described the guitar-heavy song as a “mash-up of the Black Keys and Adele,” while the New York Times called it “a new song of summer” and praised the “fireball” Ryder’s “raw-throated vocals and passion.” Ryder has said that “Stompa” is meant to encourage people “to get outside of their heads and realize that everybody’s got problems and everybody’s got issues and life is hard but music can really help you out.”

“Stompa” was featured in a Cadillac commercial and on the TV series Grey’s Anatomy . It spent eight weeks at No. 1 on Billboard ’s US Triple A airplay chart and became Ryder’s first song to crack the Top 10 on Billboard ’s Canadian Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 8. It also reached No. 1 on Billboard ’s US Adult Alternative Songs chart and cracked the Top 40 on Billboard ’s US Hot Rock Songs, Rock Airplay and Adult Top 40 charts. It became the first song by a Canadian artist to top CBC Radio 2’s Top 20 song chart and its music video won Rock/Alternative Video of the Year at the 2013 MuchMusic Video Awards. The same year, Ryder performed “Stompa” on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and at the 2013 Juno Awards , where Harmony was named Adult Alternative Album of the Year.

Released through EMI Canada and Capitol Music, Ryder’s new US label, other singles from Harmony were also successful. The pop-rock hit “What I Wouldn’t Do” went to No. 8 on Billboard ’s Canadian Hot 100 list, earned a platinum digital download certificate in 2013 and helped Ryder win Songwriter Honours at the SOCAN Awards in 2014.

In 2013, Ryder performed “O Canada” at the 101st Grey Cup in Regina . In 2014, she performed the anthem at the NBA All Star Game in New Orleans. She also co-hosted the 2014 Juno Awards with fellow musicians Johnny Reid and Classified. That night she took home trophies for Songwriter of the Year and Artist of the Year.

Although it is performed by Mickey Guyton, Ryder co-wrote “It’s No Mistake” with Jimmy Harry for the 2013 film The Right Kind of Wrong . She and Harry won a Canadian Screen Award for the song in 2014. Ryder was also chosen to sing the official song, “Together We Are One,” for the 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games in Toronto . She performed it along with “Stompa” and several other original songs at the closing ceremony.

Utopia (2017)

Ryder went into the recording of her sixth studio album, and first in five years, with so many new songs that she considered releasing a triple album. The 12-track Utopia (a special deluxe version comprises 17 songs) was released on 26 May 2017 and proved to be her most pop-oriented album to date. Ryder left the guitar-driven sound of her past work behind in favour of a more rhythmic approach. She wrote many of the album’s songs on the drums, often writing and recording a song on the same day. She also discovered new range to her vocals after quitting smoking.

The Record ’s Michael Barclay, who wrote that Ryder “may well be the greatest female voice in pop music since k.d. lang ,” observed that on Utopia , “Ryder makes sure she throws all her cards on the table: every track here is aimed at the top of the pops, jammed with hooks and production that sounds like a million bucks… Ryder is far better as a pop artist than a rock artist, which she realized on Harmony ; when her voice has to compete with loud guitars, nobody wins. Here, everything is centred on her vocals, and the songwriting gives her plenty of expansive melodies to work with.”

The album, which debuted at No. 1 on iTunes, features seven songs co-written with pop-music specialist Simon Wilcox, a successful Los Angeles-based songwriter (Nick Jonas’s “Jealous,” Three Days Grace’s “Home,” Carly Rae Jepsen ’s “Cut to the Feeling”) and daughter of guitarist David Wilcox . The hit song “Got Your Number” peaked at No. 62 on Billboard ’s Canadian Hot 100 Chart and at No. 39 on the Hot Canadian Digital Song Sales chart. It also became a gold-certified single in Canada while Utopia became Ryder’s highest-ranking album on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart, peaking at No. 10.

Ryder performed alongside Walk Off the Earth , Alessia Cara and Gordon Lightfoot at the Canada Day festivities on Parliament Hill on 1 July 2017. Later that year, she embarked on a 20-city Canadian tour in support of the album.

Christmas Kisses (2018)

Ryder’s first Christmas album, Christmas Kisses (2018), was produced by Canadian Music Hall of Fame member Bob Ezrin and released on 19 October 2018 ( see also Christmas Music ). It features jazzy covers of nine holiday classics, such as “Let it Snow,” “White Christmas” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” as well as the original title track (written by Ryder and Simon Wilcox), which Ryder performed at the 2018 Original Santa Claus Parade in Toronto . Ryder toured Atlantic Canada in support of Christmas Kisses , which Rolling Stone magazine ranked at No. 5 on its list of the Top Christmas Albums of 2018.

The Art of Falling Apart (2021)

Ryder’s seventh studio album is an almost stream-of-consciousness effort; its 10 songs were written and recorded in only ten days in Nashville. Released on 12 March 2021, The Art of Falling Apart features songs that reflect Ryder’s journey through mental health issues and toward wellness. It received the 2022 Juno Award for Adult Contemporary Album of the Year.

Honours and Charity Work

Ryder has been involved with numerous charity initiatives including the Bell Let’s Talk mental health campaign, the Canadian Kidney Foundation and Fashion CARES. She sang on K’Naan ’s “Wavin’ Flag” in support of Young Artists for Haiti, performed for MusiCounts , an organization that gives children access to music education in schools, and has supported the Unison Benevolent Fund. In 2009, her song “Sing Sing” from the album Unlikely Emergency was chosen for Music Monday, a coalition for music education, and sung in schools across the country.

In 2014, Ryder played a benefit concert in Peterborough for Five Counties Children Centre and performed in Toronto in support of Save the Children Canada. Also that year, the town of Millbrook, Ontario, added “Home of Serena Ryder” to the town’s welcome sign, as well as the logo featured on the Harmony album cover. On 11 August 2018, she performed alongside Billy Talent, City and Colour, Finger Eleven and Maestro Fresh Wes as part of the #TorontoStrong benefit concert in response to the mass shooting on Toronto’s Danforth Ave. on 22 July 2018.

Also in 2018, Ryder received the Margaret Trudeau Mental Health Advocacy Award for her efforts to bring public awareness to mental health issues. In spring 2020, Ryder teamed with the artist support network ArtHaus to create The Art of Wellness, an experiential series that aims to help artists “artfully manage stress reactions and find balance within themselves.” In 2021, Ryder received the Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour from Canada’s Walk of Fame .

Serena Ryder Returns with Kaleidoscopic Music Video for Dynamite New Single 'Electric Love'

The Canadian indie rocker's new EP, Electric Love , drops May 26

serena ryder tour opening act

Serena Ryder is back with a fully-charged new single.

PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at the music video for her new track “Electric Love,” the first track to be released off her forthcoming EP of the same name, due May 26.

“‘Electric Love’ is a song about feeling the magnetic energy between two people,” Ryder, 34, said in a statement. “It goes beyond race, religion and sexual identity. Whether you like it or not, the force is out of your control and it’s up to the individuals to decide if they should act on it or not…but I would.”

FROM COINAGE: Here Are the 7 Most Expensive Music Videos of All Time

As on previous hits like “Got Your Number” and “Stompa,” Ryder’s latest soulful, retro-tinged indie-rock ditty features her distinct, husky vocals. Since breaking out in 2006, the Toronto-based singer-songwriter has won six Juno Awards (Canada’s Grammy-equivalent), and her music has been featured on everything from Grey’s Anatomy and Suits to Veep .

Serena Ryder concert sold out at St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage

“We are thrilled to get such a popular performer, Serena Ryder, to our venue,” said Jeanne Ward, a member of board of the St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage. “I think it is because of the reputation of the St. Lawrence Stage and its terrific audiences that we have been successful in getting this line up. Artists really want to play here.”

The St. Lawrence Stage is welcoming 2008 Juno Award winning Canadian singer-songwriter Serena Ryder to the Morrisburg stage on Saturday, September 24.

Ryder has taken the Canadian and international music scene by storm since her second album, If Memory Serves you Well, came out on the EMI label in November 2006. She opened for Aerosmith during their 2007 tour, jammed with Tim Hus and his Rocky Mountain Two in 2008 and recorded the duet, “You Can Always Come Home” with former American Idol contestant Jason Castro, for his first solo album, Jason Castro, in 2009.

Along the way she won the 2008 Juno for New Artist of the Year and her album Is It O.K. won the Juno for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. In 2010, Ryder won the Juno Award for Video of the Year with “Little Bit of Red.”

Ranging musically between folk, roots, country and adult contemporary music, Serena Ryder possesses a five octave vocal range and has toured in Australia and throughout North America. Reviewers have compared her voice to a “teenaged Aretha Franklin” (Elle) and noted her “impressive fearlessness” (Boston Globe).

“We are truly looking forward to her powerhouse vocals and musical energy,” Jeanne Ward said. “Fans are coming from all over, Montreal, Kingston, Ottawa to catch Serena in this intimate St. Lawrence Stage venue.”

Opening for Serena Ryder at the September 24 concert is newcomer to Canada, Matt Longo, a native of New York city, whose new album Lowlife is due to come out soon.

“Matt Longo’s music is honest and true,” said Ward. “His mix of New York folk pop is fresh and impressive. It’s no wonder Serena Ryder has chosen him to support her tour as the opening act.”

Longo told The Leader that he grew up with classic country, but there are other influences in his music as well. “I try not to think about genres,” Longo said. “I have no pre-conceived notions when I compose. However, I don’t get offended when anyone else describes my work a particular way,” he laughed. “I’m just flattered they’re listening.”

Longo finds inspiration for his music among those people who are or have been very close to him. “I’m sort of a people watcher, and people intrigue me. I write about pain or love, whatever is affecting me, and I think this focus on people resonates with audiences.

When I was younger, I went through a period of writing dark and brooding music, but who really wants to listen to that?” he laughed. “I see humour now in my songs. I find I can step back and see things differently.”

Lowlife was lovingly made in an old studio beneath the school in Harlem where Matt Longo teaches. “Every song went through revisions as my drummer and I got the sound we ultimately wanted. I’m excited about the release.”

He is also excited about sharing the acoustic stage with Serena Ryder.

“I haven’t worked with her before in actuality, but in my mind, many times. I’m a very big fan. I’m also looking forward to the St. Lawrence stage, to a concert where the audience is specifically coming to really listen and to enjoy the music. I will be performing numbers from my new album. I hope people enjoy the experience.”

While the Serena Ryder concert on September 24 is completely sold out, upcoming concerts at the St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage promise to be dynamic, exciting and popular.

Swing into Spring with The Foursome at UCP

The Playhouse is a hub of activity these days with the construction of a new production storage area and the official opening of the recently completed new box office.

But the real action begins when Norm Foster’s hilarious hit comedy, The Foursome, takes to the stage on March 16 running until April 1. In fact the four funny guys who’ll keep audiences in stitches have already arrived.

This promises to be a fun-filled early start to The Playhouse’s 2012 season.

The Playhouse has built its reputation on laughs, and audiences will get a bellyful of those as veteran actors Jesse Collins, Richard Bauer, Sweeney MacArthur and Brian Young bring this popular comedy to life on the Playhouse stage which set designer Sean Free has transformed into a functional golf course. In fact two chunks of the stage have had to be removed to allow the actors to properly swing their golf clubs!

One of this popular playwright’s funniest plays to date, the show features four friends who meet, after years apart, for a round of golf.

In the course of this reunion, they catch up with each other’s lives and their stories, secrets, schemes and surprises have consistently left audiences howling with laughter in virtually every theatre in the country for years.

Women in the audience have just as much fun as the men as the characters reveal their insecurities and engage in an hilarious and poignant game of one-upmanship as the play unfolds.

‘The great thing about the show is the fact that you don’t have to know a thing about golf. It’s just a fun thing for them to be doing as the comedy unfolds,’ remarks Artistic Director Donnie Bowes. ‘It’s full of the kind of humour audiences have come to rely on Norm Foster to deliver: comedy that comes from real peoples’ lives and predicaments. And the cast is iron-clad.’

The characters are an interesting mix of men from all walks of life.

There’s Ted, played by Jesse Collins, who’s on his second marriage with a younger woman and just a tad insecure about the age difference. A drinker, he fills his golf bag with enough beer to ignite the foursome as the game progresses. Collins also directs the play, bringing his experience and love of both directing and golf to the play.

Brian Young plays Cameron, a worrier and a hypochondriac by nature, who’s insecure about his job as a TV ad salesman.

Richard Bauer plays Rick, an arrogant, womanizing and manipulative bachelor who sells boats for a living.

Finally there’s Donnie, a regular family man with four kids who considers himself a loser and is a terrible golfer.

All in all the cast has all the ingredients, talent and experience for a wild and crazy show!

Collins, who has had an enviable career as a stage, TV and film actor and director, was last seen at The Playhouse in The Affections of May, which he also directed, along with Norm Foster’s Bedtime Stories . He has starred in theatres in Toronto and across the country, as well as in many television shows including the seasonal classic The Santa Claus as well as five seasons as the star of CTV’s Katts n’ Dog .

Collins also received an Emmy nomination for directing the children’s television program Zooboomafoo .

Richard Bauer is familiar with Playhouse audiences as an actor and director and was seen in Not Now, Darling , which he also directed, and the holiday play, Dear Santa .

Brian Young was also seen last season in Not Now, Darling as well as in such past productions as On Golden Pond and The Odd Couple ( female version).

Sweeney MacArthur, who starred in Mervish Production’s Mama Mia , and has been seen in countless musicals and plays in the Toronto theatre scene, returns after several seasons. He was seen in such shows as Perfect Wedding and Looking .

Often described as a hole-in-one comedy and a laugh-fest that’s filled with superb one-liners, The Foursome promises to be just the tonic audiences need to chase away the winter blues.

The Playhouse on-stage golf course is groomed and the four hilarious guys are ready to go. However, audiences will be the big winners when this comic season opener hits the stage.

Cycling adventure overnighting in Iroquois

Iroquois is one of three overnight stops for the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure which started Monday at Brighton.

Over 120 cyclists will roll into the Iroquois Campground August 14, for an overnight stay.

This is the first time South Dundas has hosted the Great Waterfront Trail campers.

The Great Waterfront Trail adventure is a cycling getaway along Ontario’s Waterfront Trail, a 1,400 signed route along Ontario’s Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.

The trail highlights many cycling tourism destinations in the province and puts local communities on the map for tourists looking to explore the region.

“Cycling tourism is growing in popularity because of its great health benefits and scenic travel opportunities,” said Anna Halkidis, manager of operations for CAA South Central Region, which is supporting the ride. She is also participating.

This five day tour will take the cyclists from Brighton to Cornwall.

The final day of the trip starts in Iroquois and ends in Cornwall.

Marlaine Koehler, executive director of the Waterfront Regeneration Trust is pleased that CAA chooses to host this type of vacation along Ontario’s Waterfront Trail.

“This speaks volumes to the quality of experience that we offer in our own backyard and the growing opportunity for local communities to tap into the international cycle tourism market,” she said in an August 11, media release.

During this trip, overnight stays are at Picton, Kingston, Gananoque and Iroquois.
