Live reviews

The second time I've seen this wonderful band. This time they hadn't needed to borrow a (white) bassist, and this was, for me, a quite exceptional performance with often intricate, and always powerful drumming, what I think of as loping African bass lines not unlike those of Tinariwen, astonishing guitar playing of huge dexterity despite being generally lighthearted and cheerful, and at times very fast, and I imagined SRV would have been blown away by the Mali-bluesy licks. The frontman's singing, part-time guitar playing and wonderful dancing are consistently joyous throughout. For background refer to their Wikipaedia page. Songhoy Blues, a band not to be missed.

Delighted to watch these jovial Malian characters in the Winchester Discovery Centre recently. The desert guitar and flamboyant lead singer sends your mind wandering as you desperately try to imagine how much energy these guys must generate playing infront of their songhoy and tuareg people in northern Mali.

The singer had amazing dance moves which brought a huge smile on my face for the whole time. The guitarist was insanely talented and together with the epic drummer and bass-player, they took the whole crowd with them. They were humble, grateful and I really loved seeing them. Till next time!

Songhoy Blues deliver 2020's most joyous album with the essential Optimisme

Optimisme is the spectacular third album from mali’s greatest rock band songhoy blues.

Songhoy Blues: Optimisme

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

Has any band ever captured the pure, unadulterated joy of music more perfectly than Songhoy Blues ? They formed in Bamako, Mali nearly a decade ago. Having been exiled from the north of the country by a regime that, among other things, banned music, they know better than most how vital for the soul this basic human right is.

Theirs are protest songs that, far from calling on the listener to take up arms, demand that you dance.

Optimisme , their third album, has a tougher edge than their previous releases, and opener Badala (which apparently means ‘we don’t give a fuck’ in Songhay) announces their arrival with a gloriously filthy classic rock riff.

Crammed with staccato rhythms and an irresistible desert-blues shuffle, the whole record fizzes with energy, the gentle, acoustic start of Por Toi blossoming thrillingly into a moment of intensely funky disco.

Worry, meanwhile, is a rare English-language track, and its message – ‘ Don’t worry, you’ve got to be happy/Keep fighting today, that smile will come one day ’ – is presented with such clear-eyed belief that it would make even the hardest heart leap.

In a year like 2020, we all need Optimisme – an essential album that gets better with every listen.

Emma has been writing about music for 25 years, and is a regular contributor to Classic Rock, Metal Hammer, Prog and Louder. She is also a professional pedant and grammar nerd and has worked as a copy editor on everything from film titles through to high-end property magazines. In her spare time, when not at gigs, you’ll find her at her local stables hanging out with a bunch of extremely characterful horses.

Songhoy Blues: Tiny Desk Concert

Credit: NPR

The music I feel most connected to beyond rock is from Mali. The melodies are so fluid, so elegant and most of all so trance-inducing. It often sits on one chord and notes played revolve around that chord. It can feel like a drone at times, and in the case of Songhoy Blues it rocks, lulls and the percussion grooves are not only trance-inducing but dance-inducing.

Many of the musicians we know from Mali are in exile, driven out by Islamists threatening musicians and kidnapping them; the members of Tinariwen know this firsthand. There is sadness, defiance and celebration in the music Songhoy Blues brought to the Tiny Desk from a record called Music in Exile, which is co-produced by an artist most of us rock lovers know best from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs , Nick Zinner. Rock and the desert blues, already closely connected in attitude and sound, fuse nicely with his touch — and can be felt in blissful rawness here.

The Story of Songhoy Blues

‘ ‘ Songhoy Blues has always been about resistance. We started the group during a civil war, in the face of a music ban, to create something positive out of adversity’ – Aliou Toure, lead singer

Sons of Mali. Groundbreaking Artists. Refugees. Virtuosos. Survivors. Rock Stars. Unforgettable & undeniable,  SONGHOY BLUES  represent the future of African rock n’ roll.

And now, with the release of their scintillating new album, OPTIMISME , these blues brothers from Bamako officially announce their arrival and their intention to continue singing, playing & dancing their way into the hearts & minds of music fans everywhere. This 11-song, multi-lingual album is a breakthrough effort, led by the infectious & anthemic lead single, “WORRY”, and steeped in deep traditions of classic Malian music & desert blues, fused with an urgent & super-charged sound of now. Produced by Matt Sweeney of beloved indie rockers Chavez , who’s worked with a host of celebrated artists including J ohnny Cash, Run the Jewels, El-P, Cat Power, Will Oldham & Jake Bugg, the album was recorded & mixed by Daniel Schlett ( The War on Drugs, Modest Mouse, Ghostface Killah ) in Brooklyn, NY.

The four band members dressed in white walking towards you in a desert setting

Born from civil war & a shared rejection of Sharia law nearly 10 years ago, SONGHOY BLUES embody a unique & remarkable journey from refugees to budding rock stars. Featured in the 2015 award-winning documentary “ They Will Have to Kill Us First ” about the plight of musicians in war-torn Mali, these are 4 young men with firsthand knowledge of the violence & vagaries resulting from a country torn by tumult & divided by ideology. Their response has been to fight back using the most powerful weapon they have – their music. Now how f*cking punk rock is that, you ask? How about Iggy Pop -level (who featured on their 2017 single, “ SAHARA ”).

First discovered by Damian Albarn’s Africa Express, Songhoy Blues was then introduced to Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, who produced their debut album, MUSIC IN EXILE, and signed by The Strokes Julian Casablancas to his imprint on Atlantic Records. The band ultimately found dual homes with Transgressive Records in the UK & Fat Possum in the US, and has been actively building their profile ever since. This includes winning fans across 5 continents, and performances at the world’s top music festivals like Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, Roskilde, Montreaux & more, plus two appearances on the legendary UK TV program, ‘ Later…with Jools Holland ’ .

Their last album, 2017’s widely acclaimed RESISTANCE , solidified them as an important group to watch and they’ve followed it up with consistent touring & unforgettable live performances, helping make them a force to reckon with. Already counting such luminaries as  Nile Rodgers, Gary Clark Jr., Toumani Diabate, Run the Jewels, Dave Sitek, & Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes as big fans, this band is poised to put down a unique musical footprint with their electric, eclectic & kinetic songs for years to come.

SONGHOY BLUES closed out 2019 with a flourish, including a sold-out run of UK dates (& this raucous affair at London ’ s famed St. Albert’s Hall for the Meltdown Festival ); a successful N. American tour ; filmed an episode of the new BBC TV program Noughts & Crosses in South Africa ; were featured in the photo exhibition ‘ My Rockstars ’ by Hassan Hajjaj at La Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in Paris ; and collaborated with UK visual artist Andy Morgan on a multimedia exhibition called Rebel Sounds at London’s Imperial War Museum , which ran from June through December. The band was also featured at last year’s Glastonbury Festival in the Life Before Borders short film that was broadcast to the festival audience and documents the hardship African artists endure to even set foot on festival stages around the world.

SONGHOY BLUES are proud supporters of the charities WaterAID UK , Tree Aid , and the Great Green Wall Project for Africa , for which they kicked off the United Nation’s 2019 Climate Change Week in New York City . The band have helped to raise money & awareness toward providing relief in their native Mali, and continue to fight for progress & change everywhere.

Sturgill Simpson Is Back With New Tour, New Album … and a New Name

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

Back in 2021, Sturgill Simpson promised Rolling Stone that he was done making albums under his own name after the release of The Ballad of Dood and Juanita . “I always said there would be five, and I wondered if I’d go back on that. But it really has cemented every step of the way how much I don’t want to carry all that weight,” he told RS’ Marissa R. Moss. “Not having to stand up there behind my name would allow me to be even more vulnerable, in a way.”

On Wednesday, Simpson made good on that vow with the announcement of Johnny Blue Skies, his new moniker, and a band full of members from his original group: guitarist Laur Joamets, drummer Miles Miller, and bassist Kevin Black, plus the addition of Robbie Crowell, formerly of Midland, on keys. Simpson will introduce Johnny Blue Skies to fans in the fall on the Why Not? Tour beginning with a festival show at Outside Lands in San Francisco in August.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

songhoy blues tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

songhoy blues tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Sturgill Simpson

Singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson has always done things his way, and his iconoclasm will be in full force in July when he releases an album under the nom de plume “Johnny Blue Skies” — which he’s indicating will be the name that all his future albums will come out under.

A press release notes that “after promising to release only five studio albums under his own name,” Simpson is marking “the beginning of a new era” with the name change to Johnny Blue Skies. He did not release any statements about why he’s making the switch. But in a 2021 interview with Rolling Stone, Simpson did indeed vow that the album he was putting out at the time, “The Ballad of Dood and Juanita,” would be his last as Sturgill Simpson. “I always said there would be five, and I wondered if I’d go back on that. But it really has cemented every step of the way how much I don’t want to carry all that weight,” he told the magazine at the time. “Not having to stand up there behind my name would allow me to be even more vulnerable, in a way.”

The track list for the new album encompasses the songs “Swamp of Sadness,” “If The Sun Never Rises Again,” “Scooter Blues,” “Jupiter’s Faerie,” “Who I Am,” “Right Kind of Dream,” “Mint Tea” and “One for the Road.” It was produced by the artist now known as Johnny Blue Skies along with David Ferguson, with sessions taking place at Clement House Recording Studio in Nashville and Abbey Road in London.

Fans will need to pre-register for the tour to queue up for tickets. Registration is open now through June 10 at sturgillsimpsonlive.com for a pre-sale that begins June 12 at 10 a.m. local time. After that, a “limited number” of tickets will be reserved for a general on-sale June 14.

Tickets will be restricted from resale except through Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange, which aims to circumvent secondary-market price increases by only allowing tickets to be resold for the original price.

Stops the Simpson tour will be making along the way include Forest Hills Stadium in New York Oct. 19 and Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena Oct. 25 and .

The new concerts join the two Simpson shows that were previously booked for the coming months, both festival dates — an Outside Lands gig in the Bay area in early August that will precede the official tour opening by more than a month, and two Austin City Limits Festival appearances on successive weekends in October.

All the fall headlining shows are being billed as “an evening with Sturgill Simpson”— aka no opening act — with the exception of a Sept. 20 concert at the Gorge in Washington state that will feature Lord Huron as opener.

Unpredictable as Simpson’s ways may be, it’s highly likely the tour will feature material from the artist’s landmark album “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music.” Simpson celebrated the 10th anniversary of the record in May with a commemorative reissue on vinyl featuring new and more elaborate packaging.

While he has been largely absent from the touring circuit, Simpson has taken a turn into acting, with roles in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Righteous Gemstones.”
