Generali Arena

Generali Arena

Club: AC Sparta Praha | Opening: 1921 | Capacity: 19,784 seats

History and description

The first stadium at the site of the current Generali Arena was built in 1921. The modest stadium went by the name of Stadion Letná and mainly consisted of open terraces.

The stadium burned down in 1934, after which construction began of a new covered main stand.

Stadion Letná underwent its next change in 1969, when it got almost completely rebuilt, resulting in a capacity of 35,880 places.

The stadium got its current shape in 1994, when it got extensively renovated. In later years, a few further refurbishments have been performed.

The stadium got renamed Toyota Arena in 2003 following a sponsorship deal, and then AXA Arena in 2007. It has been called Generali Arena since 2009, but in 2020 changed to the longer Generali Česká pojišťovna Arena.

The Generali Arena is also one of the most regular playing venues of the Czech national team.

How to get to the Generali Arena

The Generali Arena is located in the Letna areas just north of Prague’s old town. The walk from the Old Town Square takes about 20 minutes. Walk north over Parizska street, cross the Vltava river, and then Letna Park. The walk from Prague Castle takes about just as long.

If you come from the southern part of the city centre or Prague’s main railway station (Hlavni), you can also use the metro . Take the green metro line C from, for example, stop Muzeum, and get off at stop Hradcanska. From there it is a 5 to 10-minute walk.

Alternatively, there are various trams that stop right in front of the stadium at stop Sparta. These are line 1, 5, 12, 25, and 26. Line 5 and 26 can be taken from the old town, and line 12 from the west bank of the river and Holesovice railway station.

Address: Milady Horákové 1066/98, 170 82 Praha 7 – Letná

Eat, drink, and sleep near the Generali Arena

The area around the GENERALI Arena is mainly residential, and while you may find the odd bar or restaurant, it is likely a better idea to eat and drink in the old town and make the walk to the stadium before the match. The adjacent Letna Park is nice on a summer’s day.

The Art Hotel Prague is located right opposite the arena and gets very good reviews. Hotel Letna is an equally close alternative, but gets poorer reviews. The Belvedere Hotel and Parkhotel Praha are also well within walking distance, while Hostel Dakura is a budget option. Hotel Hoffmeister may be of your liking if you have more money to spend.

Went here with my partner for Europa league qualifier in August £5 a ticket, beer is cheap and fans were friendly given we could not speak any Czech. Unlike the UK you can drink in the stand

I went to see Sparta against Malmoe in Champions league qualifier. Tickets can easilly be bought at the gates but be aware that queues are quite big and try to arrive early. Smoking is allowed isnside and you can enjoy a local beer. Fans are very passionate and sing for the entire game. Nice ground in very nice city.

Sparta Stadium - Stadion Sparta - AXA Arena

Volume of the play field are 105×68 and so satisfy the UEFA criteria. The stadium was reconstructed in 2005, when the audience part was renowned, new lights were installed, a heating and watering system was placed under the grass, just to ensure the surface would be perfect.

Sparta Prague (Czech: AC Sparta Praha) It is the most successful club in the Czech Republic and one of the most successful clubs in Central and Eastern Europe. Sparta was long the main source for the Czechoslovakia national football team and, after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic national football team, however lately this has ceased to be the case, as the best Czech players almost all now play in higher-paying foreign leagues. There are a number of outstanding players who have played for the Sparta over the years. Sparta play at Prague’s AXA Arena (called Letná Stadium).

Airports and Flying

Originally known as Letná Stadium or Letenský Stadion , the home venue of famous First League team AC Sparta Prague, it is technically called Generali Arena after a sponsorship agreement was reached in 2009.

With a capacity of 19,416, Sparta Prague’s home is the second largest in the Czech First League.

Sparta Prague Stadium Guide

Generali česká pojišťovna arena history.

Stadion Letná first opened in 1921 but had to be completely rebuilt less than 15 years later when the main stand burned down in 1934, which prompted the construction of a brand new concrete grandstand shortly after.

By 1969 all of the remaining wooden stands had been replaced and the ground’s largest capacity was reached. The highest attendance to date occurred when 34,000 fans saw Czechoslovakia defeat Switzerland in a qualifying match for the 1990 World Cup.

After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the stadium continues to host important International matches, with Stadion Letná regarded as the country’s national stadium.

It regularly hosts around 40% of home matches compared to the second most used stadium, FK Teplice’s Na Stínadlech which statistically has hosted almost half as much as Sparta Prague’s ground.

The most significant renovation to date came in 1994 when Letná was closed for 9 months to undergo a conversion to all-seating with the stands also repositioned after the athletics track was removed.s.

2001 saw the home side temporarily relocate to Stadion Evžena Rošického which belonged to rivals Slavia Prague as new under-soil heating was installed in addition to an improved irrigation system and grass directly from Germany.

Since 2003 the naming rights of Letná Stadium have been sold to sponsors with the ground technically known as “Genarali Arena” since 2009. Before this it was referred to as the Toyota Arena (2003 – 2007) and AXA Arena (2007-2009).

As regulars in the Champions League, fans across Europe are familiar with Sparta Prague, with the 2003/2004 defeat to  AC Milan in the quarter finals perhaps the most famous campaign.
