The world is still waiting for news on the next movie to follow 2016’s Star Trek Beyond , which introduced a new character played by Sofia Boutella. Now the actress is talking about her hopes to return.

Boutella on Star Trek 4

In Star Trek Beyond , Sofia Boutella played the new alien character Jaylah, who helped the crew of the USS Enterprise take down the bad bad guy, Krall. The film ended with Jaylah being accepted into Starfleet Academy. Paramount has been trying to get a follow-up “Star Trek 4” film going, but it isn’t known if it would include Boutella. Appearing at Steel City Comic Con in December, Boutella talked about the possibility of returning to the role (via Fandom Spotlite ):

I would love to see her evolve with all of the guys and with everybody. I would love to go back to her. I love her a lot. I enjoyed that experience so much. I would do it in a heartbeat.

The latest official news from Paramount Pictures on the Star Trek 4 project was removing it from their 2023 release calendar after director Matt Shakman exited the project, with the studio still indicating it was “excited about the creative vision of this next chapter and look forward to bringing it to audiences all around world.”

Boutella gave an update on what she knows about a follow-up to Beyond :

I don’t know if they’re making a fourth one. I hear things all the time, but I don’t know what’s happening.

The actress did speak about working with Simon Pegg, who co-wrote Beyond, and said they remain close:

I owe this experience to Simon. He wrote the character. He wrote that script, obviously. But aside from being on the screen, we developed a real strong friendship. He’s been incredible during filming, and after, and he remains a really good friend. We were very, very close during that shoot.

Since Beyond, Boutella has remained busy, appearing in a number of film and TV projects including The Mummy , Atomic Blonde , Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities , and SAS: Rogue Heroes . She just wrapped filming as the star of Zack Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi movie Rebel Moon . Over the summer, Snyder shared a makeup test with Boutella that showed she’s playing an alien again.

Forging ahead. Here’s a recent makeup test I shot on my iPhone. #RebelMoon #GeekedWeek pic.twitter.com/3DaIlzBpLv — Zack Snyder (@ZackSnyder) June 7, 2022

Zoe Saldana Is Still Holding Out Hope For ‘Star Trek 4’

I remember shortly after Beyond’s release some fans hoping that Jaylah would be the plucky young ensign in the next movie. But, she may be an admiral by the time they make this thing, if at all.

Her character seemed like the obvious Chekov replacement in a follow up movie, with Anton Yelchin dying and all. There’s no way they would kill the Chekov character in the story itself, but I would’ve been happy with a line about him serving on the Reliant.

Absolutely agreed. If they do make a 4th Kelvin film, stating that he is now on the Reliant would be a great way to honor him. There is no need to kill off the character in ST4. Well said!

Well, this is an alternate timeline, and although Paramount had strict guidelines in the past about what can and cannot be done with Trek characters (at least in the books if I remember correctly) I think you could still honor Anton and his take on Chekov if he died an honorable death or his death had meaning. That being said I think Jaylah would be a welcome addition to take his place as the new navigator alongside Sulu at the helm. In a way it would also be an homage of sorts to the Animated Series having an “alien” instead of Chekov. Either way, lets get Star Trek back in theaters…

It has been so long i bet Sulu is Captain of the Excelsior in the Kelvin Timeline. Kirk is probably an Admiral and Spock is Captain of the Enterprise. They completed their 5 year mission of the Enterprise A.

You see thats the Star Trek era I love the most and would want to see again, which is why a long delayed ST’4′ is kind of a positive imo(so long as they actually get around to doing it), it gives them the opportunity to really distance themselves from TOS era and the candy coloured uniforms and them all young starting out etc and brings them fully into the 80s movie era (after the various homage/foreshadowing to the original movies in the 3 kelvin films). older wiser, maroon uniforms (or at least a kelvin variant), mushroom spacedock, proper klingons/BoPs, reliant/excelsior, saavik, david etc.

Of course that is if they bother to resurrect the Kelvinverse . At the current time its as dead as Spock lying in his Mark VI..

Kelvin Maroon unis fascinating

She needs a job

She has one.

Trying to get one for a movie production that doesn’t exist is probably not the best way to obtain one then. 😂😂😂

Indeed, it’s all about $$$. She has no interest in here character at all, the same as the others who say the same BS. You put your name in the hat for future projects, not just ones that are immediate.

She’s starring in a Zach Snyder film, I think she’s doing ok.

I always thought the Jaylah character had potential, seems like a waste if they don’t make another Kelvin movie. Maybe introduce her on SNW?

She was the best new character.

my only Guts feeling about her (I watched this Movie in the Cinema), she could fit together with Seven of Nine. Well at last she could be the Tough New Fresh face of the Ranger’s Crew. But well, it would be nearly impossible to merge her with current Seven of Nine from Picard TV Series. She would be a fine ranger Chief Engineer if they would had an Flagship

Because She is from the Kelvin-Timeline and Picard is not. All that could connect is this famous Black Hole born out of Red Anti-Mater. Total different Universe, Time is not on her Site. TOS Reboot meets TNG Epilogue Timeline.. And not all should be fixed with an instable Time and Space Wormhole anomaly, it is wearing down on the Fans

Introduce her Character (and the Actor) into the TV Series, if you want. But left her old Jaylah behind. Perhaps the New Face is from their Species or Family Bloodline

New face: “I am not Jaylah, She was one of my Ancestors”. “i am one of her DNA- Clones, that she created and trow the Probe trough an Wormhole and here i am!”

No need of Time Jumps, but well. Good Luck explained how she ended up in Picard’s Universe

Surprise, surprise an actress would like the chance to earn another pay cheque.😉

Actors are asked these goofy questions all the time by fans and entertainment reporters, which amount to: Would you like to keep working? Well, what do you expect them to say? No, I’d rather not be in another big movie, with even more fame and wealth and all that.

Actors get paid for their work, too. Do you work for free?

When I look for a job, it doesn’t become headline news and it doesn’t get dressed up as “Id LoVe To SeE HoW ThE ChaRaCtEr GRoWs” lie

Dude, keep you day job, because the Improv is not calling you back.

We should all live so long!

I would love to see Jaylah in another movie (or even her prime universe counterpart on Strange New Worlds).

LOL, good luck with that!

I can’t believe anyone is thinking there’s a question to ask at this point.

“It’s dead Jim.”

I guess I get it. They did just announce another movie last year, but yeah like all the others, withered and died fast. In fact the one year anniversary when they announced the Kelvin cast was coming back and all systems was go in that now infamous shareholder event announcement is next month…you can’t make this stuff up lol. And she probably just hears about another movie happening in the media like the rest of us but don’t know anything beyond that.

We should have an anniversary party for the official ‘announcement’ of ST4 . complete with anniversary logo, pins, patches, official starlog anniversary magazine, documentary (hosted by William Shatner) etc

Maybe Paramount will do a repeat this year ;-)

I’m hoping that the investors meeting will feature big announcements for two new streaming shows and the Prodigy animated feature.

That might distract investors from the utter nonsense that was the premature Kelvin movie announcement. They are fortunate that the SEC hasn’t cited them for providing misleading information to shareholders and the markets.

Imagine they do it again lol, JJ coming out and saying Trek 4 is def happening with the cast filming this year for release summer 2024. plus Hemsworth is def returning as Kirks father! (despite him going to be filming Avengers soon)

I would someone literally throw tomatoes at Abrams if this guy gets anywhere near a podium and wastes everyone’s time yet again.

Would really like to see her and the whole crew back for a fourth movie in the JJ-verse. More importantly, my wife and daughters really liked her as well.

Paramount, make it so

I personally would love to see this. She was a fun character. And, seeing as (very sadly, without recasting) Chekov is no longer around, she’d be a great addition to the crew.

I would love to see Jaylah in another Star Trek movie.

Can they make a movie with a sense of wonder and exploration. A hopeful optimistic future. I don’t care if they have to do a stand alone or another reboot to give us that Roddenberry future again.

Have you seen the previous thirteen Trek movies? No, they can’t make a sense of wonder and exploration movie. Why start now?

Why the shows will always be superior to the movies IMO. Sure more CGI, bigger sets and cooler space battles, but the ‘wonder’ usually lie with the shows.

eh, TMP…..

A boring, seemingly endless drift through dark cloudy stuff only to find it was a rehash of the Nomad plot. Zero wonder for me or any of the group of young people we’d organized to see it.

I understand that the recent re-release is far superior in visual quality.

That doesn’t take away how disappointingly derivative the reveal was when we first saw the film in its initial run in the best quality cinema in the major city where I lived at the time.

Despite its many drawbacks in execution, TMP had the right idea for a Star Trek movie. It’s a mystery. What is this? We have to figure it out. Which has been the premise for many a good movie, in sci-fi and other genres. After all, what is a detective but an explorer, really?

See the recent Glass Onion for example. If someone could make a Trek movie with that sort of quick pacing, mysterious and dangerous sci-fi elements, and social commentary on top of that, then more power to them. I know Into Darkness tried to go somewhat in that direction, but again, it’s the execution.

They irony about TMP is the movie was such a bore and a disappointment, they moved Star Trek in the action realm which proved to be a huge hit. But unfortunately they now seem to think a Star Trek movie can be ONLY be successful as an action franchise. And that’s odd in itself since TVH proved (once again) you can actually do different things with the franchise that will get people to show up as long as its good and entertaining.

It would be nice to see them really try something different with the movies. Use an original cast of characters. Make a movie that is actually about exploration but don’t have to turn it into a marvel or Star Wars movie where something is blowing up every ten minutes. Create stakes where it’s not some uber-villain in the forefront, but a more internal conflict.

TMP was a really dull movie but it was definitely an ambitious one that tried to get people to think and give the story a little more weight beyond just firing at Klingons. Unfortunately they never tried that approach again.

Right, TVH is another example. It’s kind of a mystery but also at its heart it’s a heist movie. So, I don’t know why they keep going for these revenge seeking villains with big ship weapon things. That was already tiresome way back when with Nemesis.

I don’t think any of us really understand it. That seem to have become a mandate for some odd reason, at least for the last 4-5 movies. And I just became bored with the Kelvin movies because that’s what they did with every film and probably another reason why Beyond failed. It just felt like more of the same, just in a different package.

If they can make those dippy Short Trecks, they can make a Jaylah special on the Plus. Sofia Boutella is a great talent — note her fearless work in the daring film CLIMAX , one of this century’s most provocative and memorable cinematic achievements.

It would be great to see her in a Short Trek.

I don’t think the Shorts were at all dippy, and bringing back minor legacy characters for their own short moments is something many of us would like to see.

Would love to see her in the next movie — cool !

By this point the Star Trek movie announcement has basically become a drinking game. I don’t think she should keep her hopes up for Trek, but she is a very talented actress that I feel like will soon join either the MCU or Star Wars in some way.

Dont think she will join Star Wars becose she just wrapped Rebel Moon wich is a space opera movie by Zack Snyder .Two parts have been filmed back to back already and four more are coming wich will make it a New ip scifi Saga and will probably make Sofia Boutella sky rocketing the StarMeter of Hollywood. She is the lead character of Rebel Moon and did all her stunts, trained 15 months non stop for it.

No thanks. The movie was very forgettable as were basically all the JJ movies. They were made for the Transformers crowd, not Star Trek fans.

she was unforgettable. bring her back if nothing else

Just read a rumour from a usually accurate twitter source (ViewerAnon) saying JJ Abrams might be going to direct Trek 4 ..

LOL oh god. But I’m sure this is another crash and burn rumor regardless.

Could be, but might just make sense as ppl are saying he must’ve been let go by DC (apparently he was developing stuff but obviously James Gunn is now running the show) and he’s kind of been burned by the fallout of Star Wars TROS (after the major success with TFA), so it makes sense he might come back to Trek for some sci fi redemption with his crew (and Par did say they were going ahead with the next Trek film after Shakman left) but yeah its difficult to get hopes up after being burned SO many times lol

I think Abrams would be a horrible choice. We don’t need someone on a ‘redemption tour’, we need someone who actually cares and gets Star Trek and Abrams isn’t it. I thought the first film was OK, but STID prove this guy should stay far away from Star Trek IMO and he’s just become too divisive in the fanbase obviously. The guy is getting burned these days for a reason and I hope that would include Star Trek too.

Now all that said, sure it can be true because the people running Paramount seems about as clueless as him. But from every report out there, the last movie failure had nothing to do with having a director, but not agreeing on a story or getting enough investors to even fund the movie because they are probably looking for MI or Top Gun profits and not Kelvin movie profits and probably why these movies are continually stalled. It all sounds like a real mess as it’s been since 2016.

I think if Abrams were to return he’d at least be trying his best to make the best movie possible after ID and ROS were deemed to have caused upset in the Trek/Wars camps.(but both his Treks were vastly superior to Beyond imo, and brought something of a 80s feel back to the Trek movies but obviously bigger). Plus it would ensure a decent budget 150m at least. What im half hoping for (based on hearing this ‘news’) is he returns as director with Orcis abandoned ST3 script adapted to fit this 4th film (and in light of Treks resurrection on tv) and we get the ’80s movie version’ of the JJ cast (as the trilogy already given us the TOS version)

I was hoping for the same.

Another shot….

Yeah we’ll see I guess. Obviously I would rather have a movie versus none at all but you know my feelings about all of this at this point. I’m just not confident about any of it or one will happen any time soon. A few years ago I was on the other side and always yelling another film was coming and people are just being too cynical. That was four years ago now lol. But if anything happens, it’s a positive. I think I just stopped caring for the most part.

Pouring more shots….

I might be directing it, too. See, that’s how rumors work. Pouring myself a shot now, the previously mentioned drinking game sounds interesting.

A week ago, I was reading up on some old threads about the last movie announcement and I said in one of them I hate being that guy but I’m still a bit skeptical it will happen but more confident this one could at least. Someone responded to me saying ‘but you’re always that guy’.

Gee…I wonder why lol. That was said to me last March or April when it FINALLY looked like we were getting real progress for the first time in years but turned out to basically be a troll job by Paramount for the fans and actors. .I think EVERYONE should be that guy or girl now. And relying on rumors like this is just more of the same non-news.

Phil you better not screw this movie up. We waited way too long. Wait I just heard you left the project.

Well first what Red Line would they create? I mean until Now not so many TV Star Trek Shows are like the Kelvin Movies, right? Kelvin Movies is like StarFleet is on War. So show me a current TV Show that is on War with some other Species? Not even Discovery are currently on War. The Last time i am remembering of War is the DS9 War Arc. But i do not know if this is well received enough to bring it to the Cinemas or even “Netflix”.

So looking at the current popular TV Shows guide them as Compass:

Discovery: to save an Entire Galaxy (again)?

Strange New World: It is an well written pre-TOS TV Show. I do not think the Fans want to see an War Admiral Pike

Picard: This Show do not count, because it is surrounded Picard and his Crew Buddies around him, Perhaps the Children of Sung and the X-Borgs could get an Spinoff with the Ranger’s Power combined. But then it is moving away from Starfleet (ST:Renegades?). Do we really want to see some Marquie 2 Reloaded History?

Lower Decks, the Stars are the Crew on their Ship. But when they are out of old TV Shows and Movies references, that is their Main Engine so far, what will happen to them?

Prodigy is targeting for Kids and Parents that want to introduce them to their Star Trek old World values

So where do Kelvin’s Pew Pew, Peng Peng World could fit? Showing us the Cowboy Solutions of an alternate Kirk? Borgs? The evil Borgs is no more

So i really do not know what Star Trek 4 would do different or try to adept

Sry, for the Wall of text and for my spelling

Going forward, she definitely deserves to be a regular in any Kelvin movies. She’s just too good to leave behind!

I agree, she has some bits of:

  • B’Elanna Torres

it would be a shame if She never appears because Kelvin Movies are iced. Perhaps the Writing Room should be Honest and Bold with the fans and do not try to hide it. But give an good plausible solution to be on the current TV Shows. Let her be an Future DNA Clone of her, send trough this Red Mater created Wormhole with the Mission to save Romulous. But well, they where a bit off and She came to late in the (Insert TV Show Timeline here and Universe) and She try to adept with a Fresh Start

Come on, in Lower Decks they found also an bold but honset Solution to revive someone, right? Just to not try to play Dumb with the fans, and the rest would fall into it’s Places

Of the three Kelvin movies, BEYOND (faults and flaws aside) was the ONLY one that my late wife and I truly enjoyed. If they end up making another Kelvin film (unlikely, I think), she needs to be in it, one way or another. That’s the only way they’d get me into a theater and to buy a Blu-ray for my library. Otherwise, I’m just looking forward to the third and final year of PICARD. Nothing else in the Trek franchise still has my attention. My primary interest is on non-genre low budget indie films and filmmakers.

Robert Meyer Burnett has come out and said that JJ is definitely going to direct the 4th Kelvin film, but still waiting on a script.

I’m no RMB fanboy, but where there’s smoke, there’s a fire when it comes to RMB. I mean, Terry Matalas screened the entire PIC s3 to the guy to promote the show.

It does kind of make sense when you consider it was JJ who full on announced ST4 going ahead a year ago like ‘yeh its def happening and it will have my cast in it’ but then it doesn’t happen? So everyone the fans, the cast, thinks he was just making it up? he won’t want that on him will he. (shades of announcing the Hemsworth ST4 back in 2016) a way to make it right is to come back and direct

and ‘the notorious’ RMB does seem quite reliable. I remember few years ago way before it was rumoured on internet etc he hinted all kinds of multiverse stuff bringing back previous actors was in the works at Marvel/DC that would blow peoples minds and he wasn’t wrong – (SM:NWH, Dr Strange Multiverse, Keaton back as Batman in The Flash, Avengers Secret Wars etc)

Ok hear me out l. How did star fleet handle Franklin captain in the prime universe? Like he was far from the timeline incursion and disappeared before the split. Like I would love ST. SNW handle this issue

Everything You'll Want to Know About the Actress Who Plays Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek Beyond , the latest installment in the classic franchise, features its all-stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto back in action as Captain Kirk and Spock in another adventure that's the level of fun you'd expect from the series. The usual gang is back together in the third movie, including Simon Pegg, John Cho, Zoe Saldana, and the late Anton Yelchin, this time facing off with Krall, an intergalactic villain played by Idris Elba. As much as a delight as it is to see Elba on screen, it's another newcomer to the Star Trek universe who really steals the movie.

star trek movies jaylah

Sofia Boutella plays Jaylah, a badass alien stranded on Krall's planet. Not only does she have the coolest look in the movie, but she's also the film's most dynamic character, who shows extremes of emotional range and tons of charm with what seems like it was supposed to be a sub-supporting role. But beyond her performance, no doubt you'll be asking more about the actress who plays Jaylah so deftly.

star trek movies jaylah

Above is what Boutella looks like in her Star Trek Beyond prosthetics, and this is what she looks like as a normal human on a red carpet:

Who Is She?

Originally from Algeria, Boutella is a former professional dancer who danced backup on tours for Madonna and Rihanna — she even danced at the Super Bowl . She switched gears at age 29 to pursue acting and landed her first major role as Gazelle in Kingsman: The Secret Service . It's one of the most memorable roles, as Gazelle has razor blades for legs and can do this:

Where You'll See Her Next

Boutella appears to have totally switched gears to acting, and she has a lot lined up. After her huge but mildly unrecognizable part in Star Trek Beyond , Boutella will costar next with Tom Cruise in the Mummy reboot after the indie Jet Trash , out later this year.

Sofia Boutella is in the captain's seat with 'Trek'

Jaylah's (Sofia Boutella) time in the captain's chair in 'Star Trek Beyond' came about by accident.

Sofia Boutella is sitting in a prime position after her breakout performance as the alien Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond,  which topped the weekend box office .

But Boutella's instantly famous Beyond moment, in which Jaylah casually reclines in the captain's chair, was a happy accident.

In full Jaylah costume at an early morning rehearsal, the Algerian-born actress needed a sitting break on the bridge set with Chris Pine (as Captain Kirk) and Simon Pegg (Scotty). The image just worked.

“I was sitting there and it was like, 'Maybe I will just stay like this for one scene,' " says Boutella, 34. “We were all giggling and laughing. And it just escalated to us having fun with the idea."

'Star Trek Beyond' becomes tragic tribute for two

The chair occupation perfectly displays Jaylah's fierce independence, and raises the profile of Boutella, who'll be seen alongside Tom Cruise in the title role of  The Mummy  (in theaters June 9).

With filming well underway, Boutella's schedule is so packed that a phone interview spans two continents in 24 hours, starting as she's being made up for the Beyond  premiere at Comic-Con in San Diego and continuing as she steps off the plane in London, en route to The Mummy set in Namibia.

The breakneck schedule is fine for Boutella, who put aside her professional dance career (highlighted by 10 years of touring with Madonna) to pursue full-time acting six years ago. The road to this seemingly sudden success wasn't easy.

'Star Trek Beyond's' Jaylah is based on Jennifer Lawrence in 'Winter's Bone'

“I auditioned a lot during those years, with a lot of rejection,” says Boutella. “But I knew I wanted to commit to acting. Maybe I was being a bit crazy. But I was just passionate.”

Director Matthew Vaughn caught on early, casting Boutella as the lethal assassin Gazelle in 2014's  Kingsman: The Secret Service . Boutella supplemented her arsenal of dance training and discipline with three months of Taekwondo for the killer role.

“I'm a dancer, not a fighter," says Boutella. "I had to learn all of that.”

The acquired butt-kicking continued on the Beyond set. “As soon as she started doing her thing, we knew she was perfect," co-screenwriter Pegg says. "She's able to take command of the physical stuff. Sofia is the real deal."

Boutella added bo staff weapon training and other fighting techniques to play Jaylah, performed in prosthetic makeup requiring four hours of application each morning. ("Sleep is your best friend during that," she says.)

Boutella will be behind makeup once again in The Mummy . But she's mum on specifics about the role.

"This is where the conversation gets boring, (because) I can't say much,"  she says. "But you’ll be able to recognize me more here, and I can say it will scare you."

Even though she hasn't been back to her home in Los Angeles in a year, Boutella is raring to return to Jaylah, should the character appear in the fourth, just-announced Star Trek reboot   movie.

“I’d be excited to be a part of it again,” says Boutella, who says that possibility hasn't been discussed. “I'm ready to jump on the next plane, no problem.”

Simon Pegg has revealed that he based a new Star Trek Beyond character on none other than Oscar-winning actor Jennifer Lawrence .

The actor and screenwriter told a press conference that female alien Jaylah was inspired by Lawrence’s breakthrough performance as Ree in 2010 drama Winter’s Bone .

He said that himself and co-writer Doug Jung began calling the character ‘Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone’ while struggling to come up with a name. “We were trying to create this very independent character but we didn’t have a name for it, so we just called it ‘Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone’,” said Pegg. “That’s a long name. It started getting tiring always saying, ‘Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone is fighting here’. So we started calling her J-Law and then she became Jaylah.”

Vox describes Jaylah as “more or less a loner, fending for herself and trying to scrape together a living without much help from any sort of parental or authority figure”. She enters the galactic fray after “bumping into” the USS Enterprise crew, apparently.

Jaylah will be played by Sofia Boutella, who joins returning actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana for Justin Lin’s new film. Star Trek Beyond arrives in UK cinemas on 22 July, with Idris Elba another new addition to the cast.

This Is What The Actress Who Plays Jaylah In Star Trek Looks Like In Real Life

Jaylah Star Trek white hair

" Star Trek Beyond " wasn't quite the success that everyone involved in it likely hoped it would be. While the film received mostly positive reviews (it holds an 86% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes ), it failed to be a box office hit. "Beyond" only managed to gross a little over $343 million at the worldwide box office — falling short of the box office totals of the two previous "Star Trek" films . As a result, Paramount Pictures has yet to make a sequel to "Star Trek Beyond," though, a number of new "Star Trek" TV shows have premiered in the five years since its release.

However, despite the film's disappointing financial returns, there are actually a number of things that "Star Trek Beyond" does right. That includes the introduction and creation of some memorable new characters, like Idris Elba's villainous Krall and Sofia Boutella's likable alien scavenger, Jaylah . An escaped survivor of the camp run by Krall, "Beyond" shows Jaylah become a quick and helpful new ally for the Enterprise crew.

Boutella made an instant impression with her performance as the character, despite being covered in heavy makeup and facial prosthetics throughout the entirety of the film. Indeed, the actress is totally unrecognizable in the role, so much so that viewers may be surprised to learn not only what Boutella looks like in real life, but also that "Star Trek Beyond" is far from the only notable project that Boutella has starred in.

Jaylah is played by dancer-turned-actress Sofia Boutella

Sofia Boutella has been steadily carving out an impressive film and television career for herself over the past several years. Boutella got her start as a professional dancer, and many of her earliest credits are for music videos from notable musical artists like Madonna and Michael Jackson. Her first major film role came in 2012 when she appeared as Eva in " StreetDance 2 ," but she achieved breakthrough success with her performance as the deadly Gazelle in 2014's "Kingsman: The Secret Service." Two years later, she appeared as Jaylah in "Star Trek Beyond" and followed up that sci-fi blockbuster with her memorable turn as Delphine — the seductive-but-well-intentioned love interest of Charlize Theron's Lorraine — in 2017's "Atomic Blonde."

That same year, Boutella starred alongside Tom Cruise in a live-action reboot of " The Mummy ," where she played the film's titular character. Meanwhile, in 2018 she appeared as Clarisse McClellan in the Michael B. Jordan-led HBO film adaptation of Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451," and earned major acclaim for her performance as Selva in the trippy, dance-driven indie film, " Climax ."

On the smaller screen, Boutella has also appeared as Yasmine in two episodes of the Amazon anthology series, "Modern Love," and is currently set to star alongside Alfie Allen and Jack O'Connell in the upcoming historical miniseries, " SAS: Rogue Heroes ." In other words, not only has Boutella already amassed some truly impressive credits for herself, but she's also shown no signs of slowing down any time soon, either.

Streaming powerhouse Netflix will be teaming up with Zack Snyder after the unprecedented success of his movie Army of the Dead . After Zack’s lengthy run at Warner Bros and DC, he's found a new home with the streaming service promising an array of exciting new projects. His next project Rebel Moon has been touted to be an epic two-parter with the likelihood of spin-off properties. A lifelong Star Wars fan, Snyder initially intended Rebel Moon as a Star Wars movie. He had the idea to pitch Rebel Moon as a more mature take on the universe created by George Lucas. That idea was shut down after Walt Disney Co. acquired LucasFilm in 2012. Snyder then set up a deal with Deborah Snyder ’s production company Stone Quarry and Netflix for Rebel Moon to be reworked into an entirely new universe.

Rebel Moon represents a slight shift for Zack Snyder into a distinct sci-fi subgenre that is set in a peaceful colony on the border of a faraway galaxy. The one-time peaceful colony faces an existential threat from the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. Residents of the colony in a bid to repel this great evil send out a young female dispatch rider named Kora who has a checkered past to solicit the help of different warriors from neighboring planets. Below are all the details regarding the cast, trailer, release date, plot, and everything we know so far about Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire .

Editor's Note: This piece was updated on December 8, 2023.

When a peaceful settlement on the edge of a distant moon finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, a mysterious stranger living among its villagers becomes their best hope for survival.

Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire will hit Netflix just in time for Christmas on December 21 at 7 PM PT . The movie was previously scheduled to release on the streaming service a few hours later, at midnight on December 22 , but was moved up a few hours to let fans watch the movie even sooner. This has become a trend for Netflix to release a buzzy title in the days leading up to Christmas. In the past, hit films such as Don't Look Up , Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , Bird Box , and 6 Underground were released on the service during the holiday season.

The sci-fi epic had its first official public screening on December 1, 2023, during the film's panel at CCXP.

Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire will have a limited theatrical release on December 15, 2023. Snyder's previous film with Netflix, Army of the Dead , screened for one week in May 2021 across 600 theaters in the US. The limited theatrical release will also include a run of 70mm screenings which will occur across four cities (Los Angeles, New York City, Toronto, London).

The first teaser trailer for Rebel Moon was unveiled during a presentation at Gamescom 2023 on August 22, 2023. Running at over three-and-a-half minutes long, the trailer gives fans a real good look at the world of the film, as well as all the high-octane action and slow-motion that many have come to expect from Snyder.

The full trailer for Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire was released by Netflix on November 12, 2023, as part of their 'Geeked Week '23' event. Set to a remixed version of T.Rex 's "Children of the Revolution," the trailer gives us a better look at the story as the outcast Kora travels across the galaxy to recruit warriors to take down a tyrannical intergalactic force.

If you enjoyed the Geeked Week trailer, check out Zack Snyder's break down. He gets into all the nerdy technical and story aspects of the trailer that you might have missed.

A behind-the-scenes featurette for Rebel Moon was unveiled during Netflix's Tudum event on June 17, 2023, previewing the film's massive scope and several of the cast members' reactions to working with Snyder on the film.

The first pieces of footage for the film were released in a sizzle reel for Netflix's 2023 film slate.

Sofia Boutella plays the role of Kora, the young woman burdened with the task of marshaling a defense force to stand against the forces of Regent Balisarius. Boutella is best known for her role as Gazelle in the action spy comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service . She is also known for her portrayal of Jaylah in the Sci/Fi action film Star Trek Beyond . Her other film credits include Atomic Blonde , Climax , Hotel Artemis , and The Mummy .

Two-time Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins will be playing the voice of Jimmy, a JC1435 sentient mechanized robot who once protected a defeated king. Snyder described the character as a 'wild card' who is 'on a journey of self-discovery.' Snyder also compared Jimmy to Lancelot , stating that he brings an Arthurian element to the sci-fi fantasy film.

Fans familiar with Hopkin’s work would suggest his role on Rebel Moon is keeping in line with the career trajectory of the acclaimed thespian. Anthony Hopkins is one of the most renowned and respected actors in the industry and is best known for his role as the frightening Hannibal Lecter in the film The Silence of the Lambs - as well as its sequels Hannibal and Red Dragon . He also played the role of Mission Commander Swanbeck in the film Mission: Impossible II . He won his second Academy Award in 2021 for his leading role in Florian Zeller's acclaimed drama The Father .

Djimon Hounsou will be on the cast of Rebel Moon , as General Titus. Details about this character are relatively still unknown. Hounsou is an actor of incredible talent and expertise - he is best known for his roles in films like Blood Diamond and Amistad . Hounsou also has starred in several MCU titles including Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel as Korath the Pursuer. His other movie credits include Shazam , In America , and Furious 7 .

Ed Skrein plays the role of Regent Balisarius, the ferocious and cunning interplanetary warlord who plans to lay siege on a colony in a distant galaxy. Skrein is best known for his role as Daario Naharis in the third season of Game of Thrones . He is also quite popular for playing the villain Ajax (Francis) in Deadpool . Skrein’s other movie credits include Born A King , Alita: Battle Angel, and Barry Jenkins ' If Beale Street Could Talk .

Other cast members of Rebel Moon include Charlie Hunnam ( Sons of Anarchy ) as Kai, a mercenary starship pilot, Ray Fisher ( Zack Snyder's Justice League ) & Cleopatra Coleman ( The Last Man on Earth ) as Darrian & Devra Bloodaxe, Michiel Huisman ( The Flight Attendant ) Gunnar, a farmer and friend of Devra, Jena Malone ( The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ) as Harmada, a spider warrior, Staz Nair ( Game of Thrones ) as the noble servant Tarak, Doona Bae ( Kingdom ) as the cyborg swordmaster Nemesis, newcomer E. Duffy as Millius, Fra Fee ( Hawkeye ) as Regent Balisarius, Corey Stoll ( Ant-Man ) as the Veldt patriarch Sindri, Ingvar Sigurdsson ( The Northman ) as Hagen, and newcomer Charlotte Maggi as Sam. Cast in undisclosed roles are Stuart Martin ( Army of Thieves ), Cary Elwes ( The Princess Bride ), Alfonso Herrera ( Ozark ), Rhian Rees ( Halloween ), and Ray Porter ( Zack Snyder's Justice League ).

Zack Snyder’s penchant for grandiose storytelling is put on display in Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire . The story is set in motion when a relatively tranquil colony on the edge of a galaxy is threatened by the vile Regent Balisarius. In a desperate attempt for redemption, habitants of the colony dispatch a young woman with a cryptic past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to aid in the resistance.

The official synopsis reads:

After crash landing on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a stranger with a mysterious past, begins a new life among a peaceful settlement of farmers. But she soon becomes their only hope for survival when the tyrannical Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his cruel emissary, Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), discover the farmers have unwittingly sold their crops to the Bloodaxes (Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher) — leaders of a fierce group of insurgents hunted by the Motherworld. Tasked with finding fighters who would risk their lives to defend the people of Veldt, Kora and Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a tenderhearted farmer naive in the realities of war, journey to different worlds in search of the Bloodaxes, and assemble a small band of warriors who share a common need for redemption along the way: Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a pilot and gun for hire; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a legendary commander; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a master swordswoman; Tarak (Staz Nair), a captive with a regal past; and Milius (E. Duffy), a resistance fighter. Back on Veldt, Jimmy (voiced by Anthony Hopkins), an ancient mechanized protector hiding in the wings, awakens with a new purpose. But the newly formed revolutionaries must learn to trust each other and fight as one before the armies of the Motherworld come to destroy them all.

Filming for Parts One and Two of Rebel Moon commenced in April 2022 and wrapped on December 2, 2022. Production mainly took place in California.

The producers for Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire are Zack Snyder along with Deborah Snyder and Eric Newman for his company Grand Electric. The epic sci-fi fantasy will be produced by Eric Newman (who produced Snyder’s first feature debut), Deborah Snyder, and Zack Snyder. The script for Rebel Moon is co-written by Kurt Johnstad who worked on 300 with Snyder and Shay Hatten who also co-wrote with Snyder on the Army of the Dead .

Snyder will also be handling the cinematography for the film, as he did with Army of the Dead . Tom Holkenberg , who worked with Snyder on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , Zack Synder's Justice League , and Army of the Dead , will be composing the film's score. Academy Award nominee Dody Dorn , who also worked with Snyder on his last two films, will be editing the film.

As mentioned earlier, Rebel Moon is broken up into two parts, with this first filming being part one. Deborah Snyder did explain how the script went from being one film to two , saying:

Originally, the script was one movie, but it was in ‘Zack form. It was 172 pages. (Chairman of Netflix Films, Scott) Stuber was like, ‘On the service, under-two-hour movies really do better for some reason,’ even though you’ll binge-watch a series of eight episodes. “Zack said, ‘If you ask me to make this less than two hours, I’m going to lose all the character. You won’t care about these people. It’s a character story about how people can change, and redemption, and what are you willing to fight for…’ So he said, ‘What if I give you two movies?

While many of Zack Snyder's films have received R-ratings, such as 300 , Army of the Dead , and Watchmen , the initial release of Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire will be PG-13. The film officially received the rating in October 2023 for sequences of strong violence, sexual assault, bloody images, language, sexual material, and partial nudity.

Zack Snyder is no stranger to extended cuts, and Rebel Moon will continue the tradition of the now iconic "Snyder Cut." The director has revealed that R-rated versions of Rebel Moon Parts One and Two will be available to stream , saying:

The first version of Rebel Moon to hit screens will be a fantasy adventure that anyone can enjoy and watch. The later cut will be strictly for adults. I think for fans of mine and people who are ready to take a deeper, harder dive, that’ll be fun for them.

“I would do it in a heartbeat”: Sofia Boutella Begs to Return in ‘Star Trek 4’ in Role Directly Inspired By Jennifer Lawrence’s 4-Times Oscar Nominated Film

Jennifer Lawrence's character in Winter's Bone inspired the writers to create the character of Jaylah!

Sofia Boutella and Jennifer Lawrence

  • Sofia Boutella found worldwide fame and love for portraying the role of Jaylah in the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond.
  • In an interview, the actress revealed that she would return to the role in a heartbeat if given the chance.
  • The name 'Jaylah' was seemingly inspired by Jennifer Lawrence since the character was inspired by her 2010 film!

Sofia Boutella is an iconic actress who found her breakthrough role in 2014 when she portrayed the role of Gazelle in the 2014 film  Kingsman: The Secret Service.  Jumpstarting her career, Boutella went on to portray the role of Jaylah in the 2016 film  Star Trek Beyond.

Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire

Well, the actress found much fame in the role of Jaylah but the  Star Trek  franchise had so much chaos within their own films that the franchise took a pause. In an interview, Boutella revealed that she would love to return to the role of Jaylah in a heartbeat if given the chance!

Sofia Boutella Would Return In A Heartbeat

Starring alongside notable stars like Chris Pine, Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, and, Karl Urban, Sofia Boutella found much fame and worldwide love for her portrayal of Jaylah. An alien who doesn’t need anyone to survive and fends for herself, Jaylah is indeed quite an interesting character.

Sofia Boutella

Recent reports state that Paramount has been trying very hard to develop  Star Trek 4,  a sequel to the 2016 film  Star Trek Beyond.  With Boutella’s character getting accepted into the Starfleet Academy at the end of the movie, there is a chance that Jaylah could appear in the allegedly upcoming film.

“It’s very much mental”: Before Rebel Moon, Sofia Boutella Had the Most Bizarre Audition for Another $414M With Samuel L. Jackson

“It’s very much mental”: Before Rebel Moon, Sofia Boutella Had the Most Bizarre Audition for Another $414M With Samuel L. Jackson

Despite the slim chances, Sofia Boutella revealed in her chat with Fandom Spotlite that she would love to return to that role. During her talks, Boutella was quite excited to chat about the character of Jaylah and how she loved her so much. Boutella ( who recently defended Zack Snyder ) revealed that she would love to her evolve with the rest of the heroes.

I would love to see her evolve with all of the guys and with everybody. I would love to go back to her. I love her a lot. I enjoyed that experience so much. I would do it in a heartbeat.

She further talked about any potential updates about  Star Trek 4.

I don’t know if they’re making a fourth one. I hear things all the time, but I don’t know what’s happening.

Despite the secrecy that the  Star Trek  franchise has been maintaining, fans are expecting some sort of movies and TV shows that would eventually follow up to the original. Introducing characters like Jaylah could also help bring the  Star Trek  franchise into modern times.

Speaking of Jaylah, did you know that the character was inspired by Jennifer Lawrence’s iconic movie that was nominated for 4 Oscars? Even the character’s name was a play on the name J. Law who eventually became Jaylah!

Jaylah Was Inspired By Jennifer Lawrence’s One Iconic Character!

It was the summer of 2010 when a film titled Winter’s Bone  was released (ironic). Starring Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role, the film was Lawrence’s breakthrough role as she portrayed the role of Ree Dolly and received much praise.

Jennifer Lawrence in a still from Winter's Bone

Well, the writers of the 2016 film  Star Trek Beyond were so in love with the character of Ree Dolly that they decided that their franchise needed one too. As per a report by Vox , Simon Pegg and Doug Jones were having trouble naming the character that they had created.

“A lot of those young women showed up in skimpy outfits”: Jennifer Lawrence Went All Natural for a Movie That Paid Her Just $10,000 Despite Oscar Nomination

“A lot of those young women showed up in skimpy outfits”: Jennifer Lawrence Went All Natural for a Movie That Paid Her Just $10,000 Despite Oscar Nomination

Since it was inspired by Jennifer Lawrence’s character in  Winter’s Bone,  Doug Jones and Simon Pegg started calling her “Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone”. The name was later narrowed down to J. Law as Simon Pegg recalls it, “Then we started calling her J. Law, and that became Jaylah.”

And that is how the character of Jaylah came to be. With Sofia Boutella portraying the iconic role,  Star Trek Beyond  went on to earn a rating of 7/10 on IMDB and a whopping 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.  The 2016 film is available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.

Star Trek Beyond Ending & Why No Sequel 7 Years Later Explained

Every star trek series finale ranked worst to best, star trek reveals origin of a vital federation first contact device.

  • Rebel Moon fulfills the potential of Sofia Boutella's Jaylah from Star Trek Beyond, with Kora as a compelling action heroine.
  • Star Trek's movie inactivity missed the opportunity to develop Jaylah further and showcase her full potential.
  • The future of Jaylah's character in a potential Star Trek 4 remains uncertain, while Rebel Moon continues to build a franchise around Kora.

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon proves Star Trek blew it with Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), the best new character introduced by J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Beyond . Billed as a more "mature" Star Wars and inspired by Akira Kurasawa's films and Heavy Metal Magazine, Rebel Moon is Snyder's bold new space fantasy on Netflix. Starring Sofia Boutella as Kora , Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire premiered in December and became the #1 most viewed movie on Netflix, with an even longer director's cut on the way. The conclusion of the saga, Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver , premieres on Netflix in 2024.

Star Trek Beyond premiered in 2016, with Sofia Boutella donning elaborate makeup to play a heroic new alien named Jaylah. After the USS Enterprise was destroyed by Krall (Idris Elba) and his swarm, Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew were stranded and scattered on the planet Altamid. Scotty (Simon Pegg) and Kirk encountered Jaylah, who was also a prisoner on Altamid. Jaylah's knowledge of the planet, ingenuity, and courage were crucial to Kirk rescuing his crew and launching the derelict Starfleet ship, the USS Franklin . After Kirk and his crew defeated Krall and saved the USS Yorktown space station, Jaylah joined Starfleet.

The tragic death of Anton Yelchin in 2016 tacitly made Jaylah the logical replacement for Ensign Pavel Chekov in the next Star Trek movie - which has yet to happen.

Star Trek Beyond set up a sequel for Chris Pine's Captain Kirk and the Kelvin Timeline crew, but it's 7 years later and we're yet to see Star Trek 4.

Rebel Moon’s Kora Fulfills The Star Trek Promise Of Sofia Boutella’s Jaylah

Star trek fans have waited 8 years to see more of jaylah..

Sofia Boutella's Kora is the main protagonist of Rebel Moon , which fulfills the potential Jaylah showed in Star Trek Beyond . As Kora, Boutella is a fierce action heroine, lethal in battle, but also a character of great emotional depth. As Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire continues, Kora reveals her tragic backstory as a survivor who was adopted into the Imperium and turned into a soldier and the bodyguard of Princess Issa (Stella Grace Fitzgerald). Rebel Moon 's world building is intriguingly expansive, with multiple characters and planets, and an elaborate history unfolding, but Kora is a riveting lead character who holds the audience's empathy as she assembles a ragtag team of rebels to face the Imperium.

Boutella is so compelling as Kora, it's a sad reminder of how Star Trek' s movie inactivity bungled Jaylah since her debut in Star Trek Beyond . Jaylah achieved the difficult task of sliding into the already established cast of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek but immediately fitting in and becoming an indispensable member of the ensemble. Jaylah showed pluck and resourcefulness, while her alien nature led to an influx of wry humor as she tried to understand her new human friends and called Captain Kirk "James T." Jaylah also had surprising taste in Earth music, which created a funny callback to Kirk's favorite song from his youth, The Beastie Boys' "Sabotage," helping to defeat Krall's swarm. Any Star Trek Beyond fan who wanted to see more of Jaylah can enjoy Kora ' s full-blown action hero turn in Rebel Moon .

Will Jaylah Return If Star Trek 4 Happens?

The next j.j. abrams star trek movie is still in development hell..

Kora will definitely return in Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver , but the same assurance isn't there for Sofia Boutella reprising Jaylah. A fourth Star Trek movie produced by J.J. Abrams has been in development hell for years, despite big name filmmakers like Matt Shakman, S.J. Clarkson, Noah Hawley, and Quentin Tarantino trying to launch Star Trek 4 . Throughout the various and different failed attempts to develop Star Trek 4 , it's not clear if Jaylah would return as part of the USS Enterprise crew. For her part, Boutella wants to return to Star Trek as Jayah, telling Steel City Con in 2023:

I would love to see her evolve with all of the guys and with everybody. I would love to go back to her. I love her a lot. I enjoyed that experience so much. I would do it in a heartbeat. I don't know if they're making a fourth one. I hear things all the time, but I don't know what's happening.

After Star Trek Beyond, Sofia Boutella played the eponymous monster in 2017's The Mummy opposite Tom Cruise. Zack Snyder wisely recognized Boutella's tremendous charisma and cast Sofia as the lead of Rebel Moon. The success of Rebel Moon could indeed spawn a new IP and franchise for Netflix to continue utilizing Boutella's talents as Kora. And that would be more bad news for Star Trek 4, as there might be no guarantee Sofia Boutella would be available to play Jaylah again if a new Star Trek movie does finally get off the ground.

Star Trek Beyond is available to stream on Paramount+. Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire is available to stream on Netflix.

'Star Trek: Lower Decks'

Even though the end is on the horizon for Star Trek: Lower Decks , creator Mike McMahan says this experience has still felt like a miracle. When he came in with the idea for an animated Star Trek series, following the comedic adventures of lower-level officers, he was prepared to be shown the door. Instead, McMahan ended up creating an Emmy-nominated series for Paramount+ with a fifth, and final, season on the way.

'Star Trek: Lower Decks'

DEADLINE: Where did the idea come from to have an animated  Star Trek  that can kind of make fun of itself?

DEADLINE: For season four, can you talk about exploring more of Mariner [Tawny Newsome]’s character arc, beginning with that promotion in the first episode?

MCMAHAN : When we’re planning this stuff out for character arcs, you don’t want the comedy to be affected. You don’t want the show to be affected. You don’t want it to feel like it isn’t the show, right? There’s a reason why the Simpsons stay the same age, because you’ve got a great format with the show that you want to still be telling jokes and stories in. Being able to do character arcs, seeing people grow and change season to season was something that was available to me that I really didn’t have access to before. If we were going to do serialized stuff before, it had to be very lightly serialized previously and not rely on you having seen everything.

But in this, there is the fun of getting to arc people out. In writing the character of Mariner and in seeing Tawny interpret her, there was a cool thing to get to do because the theme of the show is all about finding yourself in your 20s and the funny stuff that’s happening around then while you’re still figuring stuff out. Mariner was a star fleet officer who was great at her job, but was still dealing with stuff and figuring stuff out. And then we were finding a lower deck story to tell with her where she loved to rage against the machine, but slowly there was less and less of a machine to rage against. So, once you’re promoted and people aren’t feeding into your chaotic persona, if there’s nobody else to fight, you have to address the stuff that may have been motivating you to do fight the whole time.

Trying to do that in a way that felt honest, felt like  Star Trek  and was still fun and funny, was the best kind of problem to have as a writer. That was something that was really exciting to me. And then, leading into season five, you’ll see that Mariner’s come out the other side of a pretty heavy emotional arc for her in season four, but she’s still funny and she’s still herself. I think it really speaks a lot to how  Star Trek  can let characters do that and then it doesn’t make them less likable or less interesting, but actually enhances them moving forward.

DEADLINE: Speaking of Tawny, you have some incredible improvisors doing the voice acting. Are you ever able to use improvised dialogue, or is everything scripted?

Writers Behind ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith,’ ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,’ ‘Shōgun’ and More Talk Early Development and Fresh Adaptations at Variety’s Night in the Writers’ Room

When Donald Glover first approached showrunner Francesca Sloane about adapting “Mr. & Mrs. Smtih” for Amazon Prime, she “started laughing,” and thought it was a “weird Donald Glover joke that he randomly spit out.” She was confused as to why he would pick the 2005 action-comedy of all movies, but as the conversation evolved, the project began taking shape in her mind.

As part of Variety’s A Night in The Writers’ Room, Sloane was joined by showrunner and creator of “Average Joe” Robb Cullen, writer and creator of “ The New Look ” Todd A. Kessler, writer and creator of “Shōgun” Justin Marks, writer and creator of “Tokyo Vice” J.T Rogers and writer of “ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ” Bill Wolkoff to discuss how they developed some of 2024’s best dramas. Variety  senior awards editor Clayton Davis moderated the conversation .

“Shōgun” writer Marks shared a similar challenge with Sloane of “taking something that already existed” and honoring “all that works about it.” But instead of working from a mid-2000s action comedy, he started with a 1980 historical drama. Although he wanted to remain true to the original, he saw plenty of opportunity to “ask more modern questions” through the source material.

“It has stood the test of time in a lot of ways. And then, there’s a lot of ways where it hadn’t really stood the test of time,” Marks said. “[We wanted] to bring in a writer’s room who stood outside the genres you expect for a story like this, like an epic feudal Japanese sword-swinging kind of show, and instead apply a level of thought and precision that made it a show that, in 40 years, someone can tear apart again and try to do it better.”

“I got to experience [James] stepping into his fame, which was unprecedented at the time. He unfortunately passed away at 52 of a heart attack, and I wanted to write about that,” Kessler said. “And then, two years after he passed away, I came across the story of Christian Dior again and realized that he also stepped into his fame around the same age that [James] did. [He] had a 10-year run of success and died of a heart attack at age 52 while on vacation in Italy, which is where [James] was. So, I realized maybe through Dior’s story, I could tell a story and honor my friend.”

As Wolkoff started rebooting the Star Trek franchise with “Strange New Worlds,” he knew an army of super fans was watching his every move. With a “writers’ room full of Trekkies” he felt confident they would do justice to Gene Roddenberry’s original work. But even with the wide breadth of “Star Trek” expertise at his disposal, Wolkoff wanted “to do something a little bit different.”

“We want to be able to take risks, and if you take risks, you might break something and that’s what makes the show good,” Wolkoff said. “Because we’re episodic, because we’re not ending on a cliffhanger each week, it allows us to really dip into different genres, like the original series did, like ‘Twilight Zone’ did in its own way. It’s been a joy to be doing that for the last… two seasons that have aired.”

Watch the entire conversation above.

The Requiem For Methuselah Scene Star Trek's DeForest Kelley Refused To Film

I n the "Star Trek: The Original Series" season 3 episode "Requiem for Methuselah," the Enterprise crew has become infected with a deadly disease. They travel to a remote and presumed-uninhabited world called Holberg 917-G looking for the substances they require to make a cure. They find, living there, a mysterious aristocrat named Flint (James Daly) who lives in a posh mansion surrounded by ancient works of Earth art, alongside his attractive young ward Reyna (Louise Sorel). Flint's mansion is protected by a strange, orb-shaped robot, and an investigation finds that Flint's possessions are written in the handwriting of Leonardo da Vinci , Johannes Brahms, and other notable artists. Reyna and Kirk (William Shatner) immediately take a shine to each other and play a game of pool while Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) goes looking for the desired medicine.

Flint eventually reveals that he is immortal, having learned artistic mastery in his six millennia of life. He was da Vinci, and he was Brahms. He was also Alexander the Great, Solomon, and several others. Flint, understandably, need privacy to keep his immortality a secret, but he is also lonely. He also reveals that Reyna is not his ward, but an android he built to keep him company. She is only one of many failed models. Kirk has fallen deeply in love, but the newfound feelings of love in Reyna's android brain ultimately kill her.

The writer of "Requiem for Methuselah," Jerome Bixby, was very fond of poetry and classic literature, and tried to write the purplest of prose. In the oral history book "Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages," edited by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross, Bixby revealed that the final lines of dialogue in the episode's final scenes were far too flowery for Kelley. Bixby was asked to tone it down.

The Word 'Love' Isn't Written In Your Book

The final scene of "Requiem for Methuselah" sees Kirk, back on board the Enterprise, sulking in his quarters. He was deeply in love with Reyna, and mourns that her love for him was what destroyed her brain. McCoy and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) visit Kirk to tell him that the disease has been cured. McCoy takes the opportunity to explain love to the emotionless Spock, bitter that his Vulcan co-worker has deliberately chosen to eschew the glories -- and the pains -- of love:

"Considering his opponent's longevity, truly an eternal triangle. You wouldn't understand that would you, Spock? You see, I feel sorrier for you than I do for him. Because you'll never know the things that love can drive a man to. The ecstasies, the miseries. The broken rules, the desperate chances. The glorious failures and the glorious victories. All of these things you'll never know, simply because the word 'love' isn't written into your book."

That speech was originally much longer. Bixby envisioned a scene where Kelley would give an extended monologue about the glories of love and Spock's emotional ignorance. But as he recalls, Kelley took one look at the script and turned it all down:

"Some of my dialogue near the end between Spock and McCoy where McCoy is really coming down on Spock and saying, 'You poor schmuck. You have no emotions. You can't live. You'll never know what love is like. That hope doesn't exist for you,' etc. I pulled out all the stops and wrote about 15 pages of dialogue that De Kelley absolutely refused to utter."

Kelley thought it was way too poetic, and Bixby agreed; it was inspired by T.S. Eliot. The scene was cut.

The Short, Short Version

But cutting the scene entirely robbed "Requiem for Methuselah" of a proper dénouement, or "tag," as they say in the screenwriting biz. As such, the episode's director, Murray Golden, asked that it be partially restored. Bixby recalls writing out a short version of his ending in literally minutes while sitting on a notable piece of furniture. Bixby said:

"[Director] Murray Golden wanted to do the tag. He wanted to do that ending. But he said, 'We can't do that without dialogue. It just won't play.' So I said, 'Give me three minutes,' and I went over and sat down in Captain Kirk's chair on the Enterprise set and rewrote the speech right there, because I didn't want to lose that ending either. Five minutes later they had a draft."

Kelley seems to have approved of that version, as he read it with aplomb . It's still a little hifalutin and stagey, but it works. Given the classical bent of the episode, McCoy's poetic speech about the agony and ecstasy of love is fitting.

After McCoy leaves the room, having properly lambasted Spock for his ignorance of love, Spock does something weirdly sensitive. He leans into the mourning Kirk, places a hand on his face, and initiates a Vulcan mind meld. Spock implores that Kirk "forget," erasing the painful relationship from his captain's memory. While Kirk would likely have objected to the simple erasure of personal pain -- indeed, it was something he would do in "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" -- Spock's gesture was clearly meant to aid a struggling friend. The ethics of Spock's gesture can be debated, but a viewer can understand why he did it.
