Introducing a Fully Functional Star Trek Tricorder

After an epic number of requests from Star Trek fans all over the world, The Wand Company can finally confirm that they are developing a fully-functional replica of the Tricorder prop from The Original Series .The Tricorder replica has been developed after years of extensive research, and meticulously designed using 3D scans of the last-remaining screen-used hero prop. Carefully chosen materials and manufacturing processes, accurately matching the prop and its original design intent, ensure that it will be the perfect companion to The Wand Company’s highly accurate Star Trek Phaser and Bluetooth® Communicator prop replicas, at last completing the Landing Party set.

Designed to work just like the fantasy version imagineered in the 1960s, with more than a little help from some 21st century technology, a full-colour LCD displays information stored in the Tricorder along with dynamic data gathered by its sensors and audio recording function. The Wand Company will reveal more details of the Tricorder’s functionality later this year.

With a target retail price of $250 USD, Star Trek fans can now look forward to measuring the environment, scanning radio frequencies, recording audio, impressing their friends, and enjoying the fact that they’ll own perhaps the most sophisticated prop replica ever designed and manufactured.The Tricorder will be available in summer 2021 directly from The Wand Company Shop, the official Star Trek Shop, and other selected terrestrial retailers. Star Trek The Next Generation TR-580 VII Tricorder

• Description

Screen-used hero illuminating Mark TR-580 Tricorder VII from Star Trek: The Next Generation. (Paramount-TV, 1987-94) This fully-functional hero prop represents the gold standard of TNG props. Although created for TNG, this particular unit was also pressed into service for other Star Trek incarnations when a full-tilt hero version of the Mark VII was needed. Constructed of vacuum-formed plastic, styrene, acrylic and metal detailing. When opened, the prop comes to life with an impressive display of period electronics, complete with “chasing” LED’s and a backlit view screen. This incredible piece is the quintessential TNG prop. Measures approx. 7 in. (17.7cm) when open.

• Our expert's notes A TR-560 tricorder VI from sci-fi television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Tricorders were used by Starfleet personnel throughout the series to scan for everything from mechanical malfunctions to life signs. This earlier design was used in earlier seasons, and was later updated to have a more futuristic appearance. The tricorder is made of resin with a matte-grey finish. It features a flip-out panel that reveals button decals, lights and a small faux screen. The front end features lights and a removable device with decals, secured using Velcro, and there is a removable panel on the bottom to access the electronics, which are powered by a 4LR61 6V battery. The tricorder's decals have discoloured slightly from aging. This is another toy upgrade.  This is the Playmates version of the basic TNG tricorder.  I installed a chaser board and LEDs to provide animated lighting effects. I also

replaced the toy's original screen with an after-market screen image.  To activate the unit, I installed a pressure switch hidden on the back of the tricorder.

Star Trek Tricorders

If you’re a Starfleet officer in the Medical or Science Divisions , you certainly can’t do your job without your trusty tricorder.

Check out the ones we’ve reviewed below. We’ve got everything from a basic Tricorder for TOS, TNG, or the latest movie, to a Collector’s Edition TNG Tricorder and a 1:1 Scale Prop Replica for a TNG Medical Kit that includes a scanner and a hypospray..

However, fewer and fewer listings are available on Amazon for tricorders. Amazon has cracked down on duplicate listings for items, making them harder to sell at a profit for a seller who has some. Their fees are also getting more restrictive and many sellers are moving over to eBay instead since they have more flexibility to sell there, especially used that work well or Collector’s tricorder items.

Whether you’re out to be Mr. Spock or one of his science division colleagues, or a Dr. McCoy or Dr. Crusher fan, these tricorders can finish out your uniform or Star Trek costume .

Star Trek Science Tricorders

This Diamond Select release of the Star Trek: TOS Science Tricorder follows up successful releases of both a phaser and a communicator. It is used but only because it is missing the box. This looks to be a good TOS Tricorder for your science division costume.

It features silver highlights over a black finish, and has working lights and sound effects. However, because of small parts and a choking hazard, this isn’t a toy for small children. In addition to the main body of the tricorder, it includes a removable scanner accessory to use as well.

Reviewers make it clear that this is NOT an expensive prop replica like the ones you can purchase for hundreds of dollars , so don’t expect a Master Replicas prop replica. However, it is very high quality for a “toy” or “costume” tricorder. Also, the picture doesn’t quite mirror reality. It looks like the marketing department grabbed an expensive prop replica to use in models.

If this listing sells out, be sure to check around at eBay as there are several comparable listings for the Diamond Select tricorder .

Nevertheless, most buyers are happy with what you’re getting for the money . So if you’re going for a realistic and usable prop, but not after a serious prop replica, this TOS Tricorder should be a good buy for you .

Star Trek TNG Collector’s Edition Tricorder

This Star Trek: TNG Collector’s Edition Tricorder is a great find at a reasonable price. Each unit is individually numbered as an authentic collector’s piece.

It has some realistic lights and sounds for your Star Trek experience enjoyment. It is in limited supply, with few purchases to go with the limited supply, but the reviews are solid 5 out of 5 reviews.

The tricorder is a portable sensing, computing, and data communications device for TNG Science Officers. It includes 3 authentic sounds and a light-up display screen with data operations indicators that also light up. And for us real techno nerds, a technical blueprint is included.

Reviews were solid 5s. Also, these are in extremely limited supply as they are the original actual toys from 1993 (which is why the price is so high).

The only real issue with this purchase has to do with collectors’ mindsets. Some collector’s won’t buy something unless it comes with the certificate of authenticity and NIB (new in box). Even though this one has the LE number and the box, it came from an estate sale purchase of a collector and doesn’t still have those little paperwork “bits” that the perfect collector can’t live without. But it is reasonably price if you just want the “real deal.”

Buyers also found this to be a durable toy, and one buyer has had one since 1995 and says it is still holding up just fine. So if you’d like to snag one of the last ones available, check this out now .

If you’re looking for a solid costume or uniform Science Tricorder, then consider this one before it’s gone .

Star Trek 2009 Movie Tricorder

This Star Trek 2009 Movie Tricorder is certainly not prop replica quality. It is a toy, plain and simple.

If you need a costume quality toy for the right “look” and especially for kids, this should work and the price is right. However, if you’re a serious collector or a Trek fan who likes to really “play” with the toys, this won’t do. It won’t hold up.

So, with that in mind for expectations, this tricorder is a visual replica of actual Tricorder used in the 2009 Movie. Don’t blame the toy-makers if you think it looks a little cheesy close up, because I found the movie version to be a little lacking in “real style” in the first place.

Now, on to what it is:

• It lights up and makes authentic Star Trek movie sounds
• There are two buttons used to activate said lights and sounds
• It has spring-loaded top and front door covers for some authenticity

Frankly, like the other reviewers, I think this is a great tricorder for a child, or if you need something to complete your costume and you want to save your “real” spending money for a really cool something else in replica-props land.

If you need a Star Trek Movie Tricorder this works. Just don’t expect miracles.

Star Trek Medical Tricorders and Medical Kits

This Star Trek The Next Generation medical kit is a limited edition prop replica released by Factory Entertainment. It is a 1:1 scale replica The hypospray has interchangeable vials and both have either electronic lights or sounds. Made from diecast metal, they are quite durable.

In addition to the sturdy presentation box, they have a Certificate of Authenticity and prop story booklet.

The one reviewer gave it a solid 5 star rating. As a collector’s edition prop replica of a TNG Medical kit, this can’t be beat. With only 1 more in stock, check it out now . I did see another listing for it at the same price on eBay, but I couldn’t tell if it is the same seller with 2 listings or another seller.

Entertainment Earth Exclusive Star Trek TOS Medical Tricorder

This Entertainment Earth Exclusive TOS Medical Tricorder is a great 1:1 Replica add-on to any Starfleet Medical officer’s toolkit.

It is a deluxe model that opens to reveal the detailed interior, and also includes a compartment with a removable scanner accessory with sounds and motion that you won’t find anywhere else!

The Tricorder functions include blinking lights, a spinning scanner, light-up elements, and an adjustable shoulder strap. All doors will also open and close.

Sounds make or break a working toy or prop replica, so that’s a big consideration here, at least for me. Another feature I really love is the 7 exclusive Dr. McCoy phrases that aren’t available in other medical tricorders, including these four:

• ‘Shock, radiation burns… internal injuries for certain.’
• ‘This is medically impossible!’
• ‘He’s dead, Jim.’
• And of course – ‘I’m a Doctor, not a brick layer!’

This tricorder got some pretty mixed reviews on Amazon but seems more popular on the eBay listing. But my take on what people are saying – based on my understanding of human nature (LOL) is that most of the disappointed folks seemed to feel it was not a “real” replica quality collectible like the ones worth hundreds and hundreds of bucks. Well, duh, guys. It’s definitely a step up from a TOY, but it isn’t a serious Collector’s Full Prop Replica of the type that you hide away in padlocked display cases and only bring out to show off to your friends!

If that’s what you’re after, you’ll want to save your money, because you’ll need to spend an awful lot more to get one of those. Still, it’s a big step up from your average toy, and perfectly usable and fun to haul along to Star Trek conventions or costume parties . It’s all a matter of perspective and expectation. Expect something good, but realize that the displayed picture is a tad too “perfect” for a collectible replica. And it is an excellent replica of the real thing, right down to the goofy noises like ones from TOS.

So, if you’re looking for a good TOS Medical Tricorder to USE , then try out this one . If you’re still concerned about the reviews, my advice is to read them through thoroughly, because I think you’ll pick up on the “feel” in a similar vein to what I did.

There were some test/spare pieces which I've just quickly stuck together - already spotted a few mistakes from rushing the drawing - should have tried making it in sketchup first. It turns out that lasering 1mm leaves a little 'melt' line around the edges which adds a small amount of thickness, so everything will need sanding first. Still, glad the basic idea works! No idea I'm afraid - the lasering was a returned favour. The sheet 5mm was pretty expensive but only because Amari only sell it in 8x4' sheets.

Since then, The Wand Company has also shared that the tricorder will include all of Captain Kirk’s recorded captain’s logs, and that the integrated display screen will feature animated 23rd century-style graphics in several different configurations.

Now, the replica inches closer and closer to the fanbase eagerly awaiting the chance to buy a tricorder of their own, in an update shared by the company last week:

Your patience continues to be appreciated as we complete the tricorder development. Right now we are putting the finishing touches to the software and getting all the regulatory approvals and type testing completed so that we can move into full production.    By now, of course, we have a handful of finished tricorders that we are using, playing with, and generally testing, pushing their functions to see if we can expose any software kinks that need smoothing out, or if there are any last minute improvements we think we can make to the tricorder and the way it feels.

And the TWC team aren’t the only ones playing with those first finish units — former Mythbuster and Tested host Adam Savage has now gotten his knowledgeable hands on the replica for a brand new Tested video released today, where he’s joined by TWC’s Chris Barnardo.​

  In addition to the  Tested feature, the tricorder was also showcased on YouTube channel Your Geek Fix this morning, which also illustrates many of the frankly  incredible functions of the replica:

  Preorders for The Wand Company’s  Star Trek: The Original Series tricorder replica are projected to begin later this summer and is expected to retail for between $300-$350. Fans are encouraged to sign up for The Wand Company’s tricorder mailing list ahead of this summer’s preorder window.
